New at OCCC:

A Natural Resources Transfer Degree This fall, Oregon Coast Community College launches something new: an Associate of Science in Natural Resources built around a place unlike any classroom in the state.

Students in the program will train hands-on at the 490acre Yakona Nature Preserve, using it as a living laboratory for fieldwork, ecological monitoring, and hands-on coursework. Yakona’s approach to land stewardship is grounded in a conservation-first, non-extractive philosophy: students learn to study and care for natural systems, not merely extract from them. It’s place-based education in the truest sense: the classroom is the Oregon Coast itself.

“For the first time, students here will have a clear and affordable pathway into the study of natural resources that begins close to home, is rooted in the Oregon Coast, and opens the door to continued study and meaningful careers,” said Dr. Marshall Mease Roache, OCCC President.

And this program isn’t just a starting point, it’s a launchpad. Graduates transfer directly into Oregon State University’s College of Forestry as juniors, with a choice of 12 different majors, from fisheries and wildlife to traditional forestry and beyond. That means two years at OCCC, two years at OSU, and a bachelor’s degree in natural resources.

For Lincoln County students who care about the environment and want to build a future focused on it, this is a first: a local, affordable way to begin that path.

Bean There, Roasted That

A hands-on journey through coffee history and home roasting In session one, learn the history of coffee and the impact it has had on the world. In session two, learn how to roast your own coffee — using nothing fancier than an inexpensive popcorn popper — including how to achieve a light, medium, or dark roast. In session three, learn how to brew coffee, how to “cup” (taste-test) it, where to find roasting supplies, and how to store your beans for the best flavor.

League of Women Voters Candidates Forum If it seemed like a thousand candidates were vying for a seat on the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners last Spring, you weren’t far off. But the May primary slimmed down the slate of candidates, and now just four remain, contesting the two Commission seats up for grabs in November. Jean Cowan, a former State Representative and former Lincoln County Commissioner, will lead the team of volunteers hosting the forum, which will be delivered live via Zoom. Gyotaku:

Digital Illustration for Beginners

Japanese Fish Printing Gyotaku is the Japanese art of fish printing. At its core, gyotaku uses an actual fish to achieve a detailed image of the specimen. During this introductory two-hour session, students will gain an appreciation of the art’s history, print a variety of fish species, and learn techniques to paint fish eyes. This workshop is technique-driven and focuses on refining each print through critiquing and reviewing. Participants should come with a spirit of adventure and anticipation.

Whimsical Garden Sculptures Create a garden sculpture of your own design, using the design elements and principles of repetition in color, texture, and shape as your foundation. Whether wildly whimsical or beautifully abstract, handbuilt or wheel-thrown, this class welcomes clay artists at every level, from beginning to advanced. You’ll draw inspiration from a range of garden sculpture styles, sketch thumbnail concepts, then build multiple forms exploring your own narrative or design style, using the studio’s tools and glazes to bring your piece to life. Beginning Knitting

Beginning Guitar: Newport

This class is for the brand-new knitter and anyone who wants to refresh their skills.

You’ll learn to cast on and bind off, work knit and purl stitches, increase and decrease, and read a knitting pattern. We’ll talk about online resources for tutorials, patterns, and supplies, and dye yarn using Kool-Aid. You’ll learn how to finish projects, including blocking and sewing pieces together, and make several sample swatches plus a small project (a wrist warmer, drawstring bag, stuffed animal, or similar) using the skills learned in class.

This class is designed for those with no prior guitar experience and will start from the ground up. Students will learn how to tune their instrument, form basic chords, and play simple accompaniment patterns in a relaxed group setting, with an emphasis on building confidence and enjoying the process. Participants must provide their own guitar. The instructor, Mike Tolle, is a local musician with more than 20 years of teaching experience who brings patience and enthusiasm to each session.

Wet-on-Wet Oil Painting Have you missed our exciting fall storms? Georgina returns to OCCC this term with a seasonal idea: painting the timely image shown here (right). Participants will learn how to create an oil painting using the wet-on-wet method. This method begins with painting the entire canvas with a light coat of oil paint for an easy blending technique.

In this class, you’ll learn the surprisingly simple secrets behind chocolate enrobing, the technique used to make irresistible chocolate-covered strawberries, pretzels, cookies, dried fruit, gummy bears, and more. No cooking experience is required— just a sweet tooth and a willingness to get a little messy while creating turkey-themed treats that are sure to impress.

Beginning Guitar: Lincoln City This relaxed, supportive class welcomes both beginning and intermediate players. Each student receives a blend of group and one-on-one instruction tailored to their experience level and musical interests — whether that’s learning chords for a favorite folk tune or tackling the solo from a rock classic. Over the course of the term, the class will also learn and rehearse a well-known rock and roll song, selected by the group. At the final session, the group records the song together, and each student receives a digital copy to keep.

Irish Steps This class offers a deeper dive into traditional Irish solo steps that predate the modern competitive style made famous by “Riverdance.” Not physically demanding in the way competitive dance can be, these steps are intricate and call for focus, coordination, and a bit of stamina. You’ll learn both sean-nós steps — improvised and respon-

sive to the music — and old-style set dances, which are choreographed. The class includes low-impact hopping and rhythmic footwork, so a good sense of balance and steady footing are important. A sense of rhythm and some previous dance experience will be helpful; flat, well-fitting shoes are recommended.

Ceili Dancing for Adults If you love music and movement but aren’t exactly a teenager anymore, this class is for you. This course introduces the rich world of Irish dance beyond the high-kicking performances of “Riverdance,” focusing on ceili dancing — think social, square-dance-adjacent group dances — with gentle exposure to set, sean-nós, and old-style step dancing. Designed for adults who enjoy music and dance but prefer a gentler pace, the class requires no partner and no prior experience. You should be steady on your feet and ready for moderate aerobic movement; comfortable, flat-soled shoes are recommended.

Traditional Irish Session and Dance Tunes

Emotional Intelligence for Real Life

This class is for musicians who are already proficient on their instrument and want to build their Irish tune repertoire. A new tune is taught each week — jigs, reels, hornpipes, and maybe some polkas — so you can learn to play in traditional Irish sessions locally or around the world. Intended for traditional session instruments only: fiddle, flute, uilleann pipes, mandolin, whistle, tenor banjo, button accordion, concertina, guitar, Irish harp, and bouzouki (no cello, bass, saxophone, or brass). Irish music has historically been taught aurally, so while sheet music will be provided for home study, the class itself uses the aural tradition, with an emphasis on session etiquette.

We all want less stress, better relationships, and a clearer sense of direction. While technical skills can help you do your job, emotional intelligence (EQ) is what helps you enjoy your life. Designed for adults who want practical, real-world tools to handle life’s daily pressures, this class is led by award-winning instructor Stewart Brannen, who will show you how a few simple shifts in how you think and react can transform your day-to-day life, both at home and at work.

AARP Smart Driver Course This nationally recognized course from AARP is designed specifically for older drivers and addresses how age-related changes can affect driving skills. Participants will review safe-driving strategies, learn about current road rules, and explore how to adapt to physical and cognitive changes behind the wheel. Successful completion qualifies drivers for a discount on auto insurance premiums. To meet Oregon DOT requirements, the class includes six hours of instructional time. Participants should bring their AARP card (if applicable), a valid driver’s license, a drink, and a sack lunch.

Intro to the Sonnet (and Other Verse) This introductory poetry class focuses on the sonnet form made famous

by William Shakespeare, with examples reaching far beyond Elizabethan English. Students will read, respond to, and reflect on famous sonnets, and will learn the basic elements of the sonnet form while learning to compose their own.

Emergency Preparedness on the Oregon Coast

This course provides important knowledge to families and households about preparing for disasters, natural and otherwise. We’ve learned firsthand about the danger of wildfires, we live near the Cascadia Subduction Zone, and we face unknown questions about power availability, including the chance of prolonged outages. Topics include an overview of potential disaster situations in the Pacific Northwest; the impact of these disasters on people and families; and preparedness: food, shelter, communication, medications, cash access, and family plans for separation during a disaster, including tsunami response. The class introduces a range of resource materials for emergency preparation, including those offered through FEMA. This program is critical for Oregon coastal communities in Lincoln County, where remote geography and potential tsunami risk mean professional first responders may be significantly delayed. Attendees will work through an 8-unit toolkit focused on emergency planning (household communication and evacuation plans), food and water (storing at least one gallon of water per person per day, plus non-perishable food), and shelter, sanitation, and first aid (managing hygiene and treating injuries), building the self-sufficiency needed to weather the first two weeks after a disaster.

Mah Jongg An exciting and challenging tile game that came to the U.S. in the 1920s, Mah Jongg is played by four players, all striving independently to build a successful hand from 152 tiles.

Protecting Your Personal Information: A Privacy Workshop for Seniors Protecting your personal information has never been more important. This engaging two-hour workshop helps seniors, caregivers, and family members recognize common scams, reduce the risk of identity theft, and build confidence using today’s technology safely. Participants will learn practical strategies for creating strong passwords, securing smartphones and computers, protecting privacy on social media, shopping and banking online safely, and recognizing common fraud schemes — including phishing, text scams, and AI-generated scams — plus what to do if personal information is compromised. Serving on a Nonprofit Board This workshop offers an orientation to joining and becoming an effective member of a nonprofit board of directors. So many local and regional nonprofits need diverse board members, and recruiting new members can be a challenge — potential board members may have little knowledge of what it means to serve. Lincoln County is home to many people, including retirees with energy and time to give, who could be valuable board directors.

The course explores the legal purpose and standing of nonprofits in state and federal law, types of nonprofits, fiduciary responsibilities of boards, how boards operate and evaluate themselves, and how to find your way onto a nonprofit board.

The Roadmap It always feels too early — until it’s suddenly too late. No matter your age or stage of life, every one of us will eventually leave important responsibilities behind. This two-session course guides you through practical, proactive steps to organize essential life, financial, and aging-care information now, so your loved ones are supported later. Conversation on K-12 Funding Are you struck by the quirks of Oregon’s funding model for K-12 education?

Join Mike Honda, a Lincoln County resident who served eight terms in the United States Congress, for this indepth conversation series examining how education funding in the U.S. can be more equitably aligned with each child’s academic and social-emotional needs. Participants will enjoy light refreshments at the first session, and will explore the foundations of public education and consider how federal and state partnerships can address funding inequities, and why well-intentioned reforms often face challenges. Join naturalist Jill Pridgeon for a small-group walk (15 students or fewer) along an accessible trail near Agate Beach, and get your eyes and mind reawakened to your natural neighbors.

This hands-on course introduces marine phytoplankton and bacteria and their essential role in marine ecosystems and coastal food webs. Cape Perpetua Bioblitz Discover the incredible biodiversity of Oregon’s central coast and contribute to real science while you’re at it. This series invites volunteers of all experience levels to document local species using the free iNaturalist app. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to use iNaturalist, then head into the field for a guided BioBlitz excursion at Cape Perpetua — hiking coastal rainforest and exploring tidepools at low tide. Fatal Four The Construction Fatal Four outreach program emphasizes the prevention of injuries and deaths related to the hazards from falls, electrocution, and struck-by and caught-in incidents. This seminar will review the types of hazards related to each of the “focus four” dangers along with applicable OSHA standards and directives and recognized industry practices.

Excavation Safety You will learn about the role of the competent person, planning considerations, specific hazards resulting from excavation work, requirements for protective systems, and Oregon OSHA’s soil-classification methods.

The SBDC Trades Licensing & Compliance Program can guide you through the process of obtaining your Landscape Contractors Board (LCB) license quickly and efficiently. The class is taught by a certified CCB education provider, fulfills the LCB Pre-exam educational requirement, and is stipulated by Oregon regulations.

The two-day course is broken down into four modules and four exams. Enrollment includes no-cost, one-onone assistance from an SBDC Advisor to apply for your license. Lunch will be provided for both days.
