We are proud of our GED students, and those that continue on and earn degrees and certificates here at OCCC. Creativity Boot Camp Do you ever say to yourself: “I wish I were more creative”?

Creativity is a learnable skill, and amping up your creative thinking skillset can help you better problem-solve at work and at home. Embark on a creative journey with the Creativity Boot Camp, a short two-hour class to give you the tools you need to enter a more creative mindset.

In this class, you learn what creativity is, and what foundational skills and experiences you’ll need to grow your own creativity. You’ll learn tools and exercises to train your mind to think more creatively. You’ll also learn how lead a group brainstorming session. Attendees will come away with a set or information sheets and worksheets to continue their creative journey.

Instructor Paul Schuytema has worked as an entrepreneur, economic developer, writer, teacher, software developer, computer game designer, concert promoter, musician, and creativity trainer. He taught the Creativity Boot Camp at the international Game Developers Conference for over a dozen years and was a presenter at the World Creativity Symposium at Wake Forest University.

Sleep Well! Be Well!

Each of our bodily systems rely upon our ability to get adequate sleep to function properly. By contrast, quality sleep occurs when we have a functional balance within our bodily systems. Most sleep disorders are symptoms of a disruption within one or more of these bodily systems. This class explores our most common sleep disorders and their origins. By modifying our lifestyle choices, we can achieve a balance between good sleep and overall wellness.

Gyotaku: Japanese Art of Fish Printing Gyotaku is the Japanese art of fish printing.

At its core, Gyotaku uses the actual fish to achieve a detailed image of the specimen.

During this introductory two-hour session, students will gain an appreciation of the art’s history, print a variety of fish species, and learn techniques to paint fish eyes. This workshop is technique-driven and focuses on refining each print through critiquing and reviewing each print. Participants should come with a spirit of adventure and anticipation. Materials fee covers cost of harvesting fresh fish as well as paints, papers, etc.

Beginning Knitting This is a class for the brand-new knitter and for anyone who wants to refresh their skills. You will learn to cast on, work knit and purl stitches, work increase and decrease stitches, bind off, read a knitting pattern, and dye wool yarn using Kool-Aid and a microwave oven. We will talk about sources of information about knitting patterns, techniques, tools, and materials, and how to choose yarn for a project. Finally, you will learn how to use blocking to give your projects a professional appearance. The class project will be knitting a pair of fingerless mitts (or another project of your choice). Class limit of 10.

Intermediate Knitting This is a class for knitters with basic skills (cast on, bind off, knit stitch, purl stitch) who want to build on those skills.

You will learn about alternative methods for casting on, and where each is useful; using knit and purl stitches to create an homage to waverly, by liz howell texture; how to knit cables; knitting in the round using a circular needle and using double-pointed needles (useful for making hats and socks); following knitting patterns and charts; and using increases and decreases to shape knitting. The class project will be a knitted hat or cowl, incorporating cables, textured stitches, and shaping (or other project of your choice).

Students are encouraged to buy their own yarn for this class (approximately 100 g of worsted weight wool, wool blend, or good quality acrylic in any color). Class limit of 10.

Estate Planning: Wills, Trusts & More Will your estate plan cause hurt and dissension in your family? This short course will address fundamental issues involved in creating an effective estate plan. The class teaches you the strategies needed for effective management of your assets as you age (including during periods of incapacity), and guidelines for the appropriate disposition of assets upon death. Content of the class involves a discussion of the use of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives. We will also consider questions of planning that include IRA’s and other retirement assets.

Digital Photography: The Basics Learn about the use of the mode dial, and the different menus. Learn the meaning of the camera icons and how to use them properly to take different types of photos. Learn how to transfer photographs to a computer. Learn basic photo composition and creative uses of a digital camera for taking portraits, landscapes, wildlife photography, documentation of current events and much more. Digital Photography: Beyond the Basics This class is for those who wish to learn even more about their Digital Single-Lens Reflex, (DSLR) interchangeable lens camera. In this class, features such as Program, Aperture, Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual modes will be explored. The class will also cover f/stop, exposure, shutter speed, white balance, and bracketing. This class will teach organization of photographs after a photo shoot. This class includes hands-on camera work through a field trip/ photo shoot to practice all the topics covered in class.

Students will provide their own transportation and meet at the shoot location.

Introduction to Improv Have you ever been tongue-tied on a date or during a job interview? Have you ever wanted to be better at thinking on your feet? Oil Painting Using the Wet-onWet Method: Spring Scene

Learn how to paint an oil painting using the wet-on-wet method.

This method begins with painting the entire canvas with a light coat of oil paint for an easy blending technique. Learn how easy it is to blend and detail as you go, even if you currently do not have any drawing capabilities.

General Drawing Skills New or returning to drawing and art making? This course will help facilitate fundamental drawing skills that can be used to have fun, make fine art drawings as well as prep work for painting projects. We will go over tone, perspective, basic design & composition and drawing from life.

Recommended tools: a basic drawing kit, ruler and a pad of drawing paper is a good idea. A #2 pencil and printer paper will work too.

The CERT program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, which allows them to focus on more complex tasks.

Through CERT, the capabilities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters is built and enhanced.

About The CERT Training Class: If available, emergency services personnel are the best trained and equipped to handle emergencies. Following a catastrophic disaster, however, you and your community may be isolated for an extended period for a myriad of reasons, including the size of the area affected, inoperable communications systems, or unpassable roads.

CERT Basic Training prepares you to help yourself and help others in the event of a catastrophic disaster. Because emergency services personnel will not be able to help everyone immediately, you can make a difference by using your CERT training to save lives and protect property. This training covers basic skills that are important to know in a disaster when emergency services are not available. With training and practice, and by working as a team, you will be able to protect yourself and maximize your capability to help the greatest number of people after a disaster.

Mah Jongg for Beginners An exciting tile game that came to the U.S.A. in the 1920s, Mah Jongg is played by 4 players all striving independently to create a successful hand from 152 tiles.

The class will be taught to National Mah Jongg League standards. After a couple of classes, we will be learning as we play!

Perusing Poetry, with Paul We’ll work on and explore poetry. April is National Poetry Month. This year, on the 25th anniversary, in this time of uncertainty and great concern, Paul Haeder will work with natural born Coastal poets in a workshop style to assist students in finding the poet inside. This will be about writing for discovery – about our own offerings, our wisdom, uplifting ideas, and language that prompts reflection that can help us slow down and center mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Haeder is projects editor for Cirque Journal, which comes out twice a year, and features writers and visual artists of the Northwest, from Canada. We’ll see what words students conjure up to be both reflective and playful in this time of major shifts. Maybe the goal is to get something published in a literary magazine . . . somewhere else. The reality: Haeder has worked with a plethora of students around the country and in other countries. Haeder finds that poetry “lifts the veil from the hidden beauty of the world, and makes familiar objects be as if they were not familiar.” (Percy Bysshe Shelley, from A Defense of Poetry and Other Essays.). He’s taught in prisons, in gang-prevention programs, colleges and continuing education sessions.

Discovering Your Family’s Story: Family History Research for Beginners Who are you? What makes you, you? We all carry bits and pieces of DNA from our ancestors, but we also hold our ancestors’ culture, beliefs, and values. What do you know about your ancestors? Quite often, we don’t know much, if anything, about our family further back than a generation or two. Unless your ancestry is 100 percent Native American, your forebears left your family’s ancestral home. Why did they come? What hardships did they face? Have you ever wondered how their lives and their fates have affected your aspirations in life and the way you view the world? This six-week course will help you begin your journey to discovering your family’s story and provide you with tools to further your family research. In the process of learning about your ancestors, you will learn more about yourself and what makes you, you!

In this class, you will learn how to build a family tree and organize your information, become familiar with various genealogical websites that can assist you in your research, and learn how to access public records. These include census reports, Native American census and research documents, immigration and naturalization records, military records, and birth, marriage, and death records. In addition, you will learn the importance of networking with other family researchers through genealogical websites and how DNA testing can be a helpful research tool. Luckily for us, there are many Internet resources available for research. We will be dedicating part of the class time for hands-on learning in a computer lab to assist you in getting started in your research.

Beginning Ceramics General introduction to fundamental ceramic skills and clay experience to foster artistic growth.

Students will learn techniques for hand building without the use of the potter’s wheel. Topics include methods of pinch, coil, and slab construction, applying glaze and introduction to loading and firing an electric kiln. Two classes per week for four weeks, 8 sessions total. Students may have additional studio time within our regular business hours or on Tuesday nights from 5pm-9pm, for the duration of the course. Class is held at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. Students purchase their own clay and tools at a cost of $35, on the first day of class.

Watercolor Students will learn and practice skills in watercolor painting. We’ll practice using different tools and techniques to create layering effects for depth in subjects inspired by nature, and we’ll focus on skills for painting outdoors or in a travel journal. Over the 6 weeks, we’ll add techniques to build up to one or two final paintings, per student’s choice.

Expressive Acrylic Painting Get into color with this expressive acrylic painting class! Real Estate Broker’s License

Have you tried studying independently (and alone) for your Real Estate Broker’s License test? All too often, independent study grinds on for months and months longer than you planned. This class is designed to keep you and your classmates on track, week in and week out, as you work as a group and independently towards preparing to successfully take your Real Estate Broker License test. Start in September and take your test before the end of Fall! There are cheaper independent study programs available.

This course, though, proves the reliable axiom that one gets what one pays for. The first class will start Thursday, January 13 and will meet each Thursday night from 5:30-8:30 for 10 weeks. March 17 will be the last Thursday class, and there will be one Saturday class on March 19 from 9-5. The Saturday class is a review day.

Real Estate Property Management Course This course introduces the Oregon real estate property manager to licensing laws and rules including statutes within ORS696 pertaining to property management and OAR863. The course is designed to get you prepared to take the State of Oregon Property Manager License Exam.

This is the fastest way to qualify to take the exam, which covers the role of property managers, tenant relations, fair housing, lease agreements and more. You must attend all evening class sessions and have online capacity to complete the self-study portion of this course. Students who pass this course are prepared to take the proctored Oregon Property Manager License exam, which is a required step to becoming a licensed property manager through the State of Oregon. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to describe real estate laws and rules that protect the Oregon consumer in need of property management services provided by a licensed property manager. Pickleball Basics Lincoln City Parks and Recreation is partnering with the Lincoln City Pickleball Club to offer an exciting six-week class. Pickleball basics will dive into the rules, fundamentals, and strategy of the fastest growing sport in America. The six-week course will help learn the basic of the game as well as build camaraderie with fellow players. Open to players at all levels.

Join the Lincoln City Parks and Recreation Team for fun, rewarding Spring and Summer work at the Lincoln City Community Center Pool. Your first step is to become a lifeguard, through this class. (Others are welcome to register for the class, too.)

Course Times: Apr. 1 – 4-8pm (Intro and prerequisites) Apr. 2 – 9am-5pm (w/lunch break) Apr. 8 – 4-8pm Apr. 9 – 9am-5pm (w/lunch break) Prerequisites/requirements for passing: • Must be 15 years of age by the last day of class • Online course work completed before start of class (approx. 7 hours) • Swim 300 yards, continuously swimming breaststroke and/or front crawl • Tread water for two minutes using only legs • Complete a timed event within 1 min. 40 sec.

• Start in the water and swim 20 yards • Surface dive to a depth of 7-10 ft and retrieve a 10lb. brick. Return to surface and swim back to starting point with both hands on the object. Keeping the face at or near the surface. Exit the water without using ladder or steps.

This class, appropriately held this year on Earth Day, even showcases an easy, foolproof recipe. (If you’re lucky, you can prepare and sample the dish right there on the beach.)

Participants will also discuss environmental stewardship and safety with regards to harvesting.

COMBATING OCEAN ACIDIFICATION AND HYPOXIA

Audubon Society of Lincoln City invites you to explore how climate change is affecting our ocean environment. These changes not only threaten the ecological balance of marine life, but also put our food supply and many livelihoods at risk. Lincoln City Audubon, in partnership with Oregon Coast Community College, is presenting a series of webinars on how our oceans are changing and ways to build resiliency. The inaugural webinar on April 26 examines climate changes to ocean water quality, known as ocean acidification and hypoxia (OAH).

Oregon was one of the first places in the world where scientists

observed ocean acidification, evidenced by weakened shells in the shellfish growing industry. Low oxygen levels, or hypoxia, compound the problem.

Dr. Charlotte Whitefield works at Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) as the Department’s first dedicated OAH staff member.

iNaturalist & the Wrack Line: Crowd-Sourcing Environmental Data This workshop will introduce you to iNaturalist, a free smartphone and online platform that aids users in identifying all manner of plants, animals, and fungi. We will cover how it is currently being used in the Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve in a citizen-science, crowd-sourced, research project. Using the computing power of AI , learn how you can aid science in studying what is washing ashore at the high tide line of the beach, and how it relates to changes to our ocean and climate. The Wrack Line Project is an initiative of the Coastal Climate Change + Community Art Science and Tradition Project (4CASTproject.org), a partnership between OSU Marine Studies Initiative, USFS, ODFW, The Nature Conservancy, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and the Cascade Head Biosphere Collaborative. Kite Making... and Flying!

In this two-session class, participants will utilize a proven nosew method to create their own unique, durable Tyvek kite. The first session includes design, concept, and painting. In the second session, you will construct your kite. Taught by Lincoln City kite company owners, Ronda Brewer and Lindsey Johnson, the class promises to be fun, interesting, creative, and stimulating.

The class is to be held just before the Lincoln City Summer Kite Festival, and participants will be invited to bring their creations to join in the festivities and to fly their creations as one of Ronda’s Rookies! Participants will be invited to join Ronda on the beach during the Kite Festival as one of “Ronda’s Rookies” Flying their creations. Birding Basics Do you find yourself listening to an odd chirp while walking or gardening?

Are you fascinated by the random rustlings in the bushes? Do you notice and enjoy the birds in your world, but wish you knew more about these clever and busy neighbors? This is just the class for you! Participants will learn how birds behave so it will be easier to find, watch, and identify the type you are seeing.

Bird identification, adaptions, and habitat will be introduced. Birds of the Oregon Coast will be our focus during this 2-week class. Participants will have access to bird guides and binoculars and will learn how to use them. The final trip of the class will be a field trip to identify birds in the area.

Introduction to Sea Kayaking Learn the basics of sea kayaking with coaching from a highly trained instructors. This class will cover basic information about kayaks, equipment and topics related to kayak safety. Then we’ll move to the water, where instruction will include basic rescue skills, a variety of paddle strokes, boat maneuvering, and considerations when planning a kayak trip. How do we improve childcare? ECE does it.

The Early Childhood Education Career Pathway is a certificate program designed to accommodate part-time and full-time students. A full-time student can complete the certificate in as little as three terms. Graduates are certified to work with children age birth to six years old. Through the program, they are encouraged to discover what age group appeals to them, and where their passion lies.

Qualified childcare and early education employees are among the biggest needs in Lincoln County. Many local businesses want to hire OCCC graduates because of the robust certificate program. Students who want to continue and earn their bachelor’s degree in education can also transfer to Western Oregon or Oregon State University and earn their four-year degree after completing the ECE program.

Students in the ECE program also get to explore different job sites near where they live for their practicum hours – whether they live in north, central, or south Lincoln County. Some students have even been hired right out of the certificate program at the businesses where they do their practicum. Graduates are currently employed throughout the county at the Lincoln County School District, Head Start programs, Neighbors for Kids, day care centers, private preschools, and others. Resources are also available if students desire to start their own in-home childcare and preschool programs.

how to incorporate children who come from many cultures and how to use cultural strengths in the classroom with culturally and age-appropriate activities. Fall term also includes an introduction to the ECE field and learning about family/ teacher relationships, which can help children succeed.

• Winter term includes learning best practices for children from birth to three years old. Students learn to develop lesson plans, understand development best practices, and learn how to foster children’s growth in five areas – cognitive, language development, gross motor skills, science and mathematics.

Winter term also includes 90 hours of practicum where students learn hands-on skills in a childcare setting.

• Spring Term classes include learning curriculum for children ages three to six years old, as well as Health & Nutrition and Practicum. As future teachers, students will also learn how to use learning outcomes from the State of Oregon and how to create lesson plans that will meet state goals. Students also learn how to create a nutritious menu, and continue in their practicum.

Some students can qualify for the STEP program and reduce their financial burden. Financial aid and scholarships are part of the mix as OCCC strives to help ECE certificate students complete without student debt. CO.STARTERS Core provides an action-driven, collaborative process with a small and supportive group of like-minded people. Over ten sessions, you’ll identify your assumptions about why and how your businesses will work and then talk to customers in order to validate your ideas. This approach enables you to rapidly uncover flaws in your concept and find viable models more quickly.

You’ll leave the program with a deeper understanding of how to create a sustainable business, articulate your model, and repeat the process with your next great idea.

In this course, you will learn to articulate your products and/or service, determine your unique selling proposition, validate your assumptions and connect your business idea to your local community.

Interested participants should register their interest at tinyurl.com/lccostarters. Once you register, you will be contacted by the Facilitator who will help you decide if the Core program is right for you. There is a non-refundable $50 application fee and a $300 program fee. Start an In-Home Childcare Business The OCCC Small Business Development Center, with support from Northwest Oregon Works, launched its first Childcare Startups four-part workshop in October 2021. The workshop, which returns this Spring, is designed to help launch new childcare businesses here in Lincoln County - and to help ensure their long-term success.

“In-home childcare can be a great fit – for example, for a parent who’d like to stay home with a child, and would like to contribute to meeting household expenses while offering the child the chance to socialize. If this workshop can help launch even one home-based childcare business, that could mean as many as 10 workers could return to their jobs, secure in the knowledge that their children are safe and secure.”

The program features an in-depth session on regulations, finance, and licensing, led by guest presenters from Linn-Benton Community College. Participants will also register for an infant and child CPR/First Aid session. Another session will feature general information about business formation, operations, marketing, and finances, led by Lambrecht. The remaining session focuses on insurance and legal considerations.

The four segments: (1) Childcare Operators’ Fundamentals, with Jose Hernandez (2) Operating Your Business in Lincoln County, with Misty Lambrecht (3) Legal, Operational & Insurance Considerations (4) CPR & First Aid (Independent Study) Thanks to support from Northwest Oregon Works, the cost to attend the four-workshop series is just $25, and partners/ spouses are welcome to attend for no additional charge. $25 payments are re-funded upon completion of the four segments, including first-aid certification. • Do I have the patience and self control necessary to continue to give good quality childcare even in very stressful situations?
