elcome to the third issue of the Summit, Olympic College’s alumni and friends’ magazine. The community’s generosity enables the College to provide outstanding access and excellent opportunities for citizens in Kitsap and Mason counties who are pursuing completion of a higher education credential – a professional technical certificate, an associate degree, a transfer degree, or a baccalaureate program. That generosity also enables the College to fulfill its role as the cornerstone of learning for the region, enriching those we serve by creating relevant, educational options and bringing a diverse array of activities to the region.

New in 2017, the OC Alumni Association has started a Speaker Series featuring OC professors and instructors – the talent in our own backyard. On February 2nd, Dr. Caroline Hartse, lead faculty in Anthropology at OC, discussed the Yama Project – the archaeologic dig of an historic Japanese immigrant village located on Bainbridge Island in the late 1800s – early 1920s. The next speaker will be on May 4th; Dr. Bob Abel, Professor of Applied Physics at OC and a collaborator with the UW’s Large Synoptic Survey Telescope group, will discuss life on Mars. More information about this lecture series can be found at www.olympic.edu/OCAlumni This fall the College will occupy the big building that is currently wrapped in pink insulation. The College Instruction Center is the largest funded project in State community college history. When completed, this 70,000 square-foot facility will provide a state-ofthe-art home for theater, digital filmmaking, art, music, health occupation programs, and active learning classrooms.

In addition, there are changes being made at our Poulsbo and Shelton sites. At OC Shelton, the Bremer Trust is funding a weld shop facility. It will allow the College to move this program onsite, into a state-of-the-art facility that will grow the welding program

and support the local workforce of South Mason County. At OC Poulsbo, the College, in partnership with Western Washington University (WWU), is constructing a modular addition. The addition will support program expansion.

In January, I announced that I will be retiring at the end of 2017. I have served as the President of Olympic College since 2002. Serving as the President of Olympic College has been a tremendous honor and the highlight of my professional career. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served in this capacity for so many years and appreciative of all those I have worked alongside both in the College and the community. It is rewarding to reflect on all of the students who have been positively impacted by this College while I have been here. The support of our alumni and friends is instrumental to making this student achievement a reality.

I look forward to working with the College and community on the many important challenges and goals that need to be met between now and Dec. 31, 2017. We will continue to move forward with a strong pace and determination as we are guided by our mission of student learning and community well-being.

I was there because I wanted to get somewhere and Olympic opened the door.

W

hen Olympic Junior College opened for registration Sept. 4, 1946, World War II veteran Bob Ness was one of the first people to sign up for classes.

Ness, whose full name is Charles Robert, had finished South Kitsap High School early and enlisted in the Coast Guard, eager to take part in the war effort and see the world. By the time he returned to his parents’ farm near Port Orchard in the summer of 1946, he’d done both, traveling to Italy, the Philippines and New Guinea as part of a troop-transport operation supporting the planned invasion of Japan.

The 19-year-old’s worldview and ambitions had broadened, but his opportunities at home had not. “I had visions of an apprenticeship in the machine shop at the shipyard, but after the war, they were laying people off and there were no opportunities. For me, Olympic College answered everything. Mother and father were very relieved.”

Now 89, Ness recently talked to the Summit about how enrolling in the then junior college set him on the path to a successful career as a water resource planner. The agricultural engineer helped design some of the federal government’s first Columbia Basin irrigation projects, which turned more than 670,000 acres of desert into productive farmland.

“Without Olympic, I don’t know what I would have done. Maybe I would have got an odd job on a dairy farm somewhere. Maybe I wouldn’t have gotten very far. I don’t know.“ When Ness came home from the war, he had earned three years of G.I. benefits, but didn’t have the resources to go away to a four-year university. Olympic Junior College offered an affordable option close to home with tuition at $35 a quarter. Ness paid for his first year of pre-engineering studies with his benefits and worked evenings as a janitor at South Kitsap High School to pay for the second.

The push for a community college began in Bremerton around 1935, but had been put on hold during World War II. It was restarted in 1945, in part because of the flood of returning veterans needing job training and the promise of funding from the G.I. Bill’s education benefits.

“This venture into extended pre-professional and vocational training by this community was a most timely move,” Dean Donald S. Patterson wrote in the first Olympic Junior College yearbook.

Originally part of the Bremerton School District, the college facilities included a former elementary school building, repurposed wartime dormitories and science labs shared with the high school. There were 19 faculty members. Staff included a veterans’ advisor and four veterans’ training officers.

Ness, whose photo in the 1947 annual shows a fresh-faced young man with slicked-back wavy light brown hair and a friendly halfsmile, said his junior college teachers were outstanding. Some were retired from other jobs, he recalled, and they brought real-world knowledge to their work, as well as a passion for helping their students.

A particular favorite was Dr. Alfred Seckel, a mathematics professor who had fled Nazi Germany with his two sons. “I got to know him and he helped me several times.”

Ness liked the practical focus of all of his classes. “If you learned mathematics, you learned how to apply it a little bit,” he said.

“It was skill-teaching instead of diploma-type teaching. All the teachers did that, Dr. Seckel, particularly.”

Ness said it was a smooth transition to WSU and then to his first job in Ephrata, where he designed farm irrigation systems. Eventually, he oversaw water resource planning for 10 western states from the Department of Agriculture’s regional office in Portland, before retiring in 1982 and moving home to his parent’s farm with his wife, Sally. The couple is active in the Sons of Norway Oslo Lodge (2035 Bremerton), which has supported Olympic College with two endowed scholarships in the past two years.

“Olympic College gave quite an opportunity to Bremerton,” he said. “There’s a benefit I see in having a college that is responsive to local needs and support. They do it together, local industry and the college.”

Ness also noted that the college continues to prioritize educating veterans – the second highest number among state community colleges, according to a 2014 report. To support that mission, Olympic College recently won a $300,000 grant to create a Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success that’s designed to monitor student success and provide support if students are struggling.

Ness hopes other veterans get the same boost from the community college that he did: “OC opened my eyes up to what the possibilities were and I am forever grateful for that.”

After earning an associate’s degree as part of Olympic’s first graduating class in 1948, Ness transferred to Washington State University, where he used the remainder of his benefits to obtain an engineering degree.

According to “Time After Time,” a history of Olympic College published in 1996, Ness was in good company. Some 225 of the college’s 575 full-time students in the fall of 1946 were using the GI Bill to help pay tuition and living expenses.

hanks to a scholarship from Kitsap Bank, first-year Olympic College student Kyle Gordon is one step closer to his goal of earning a Bachelor’s of Applied Science and Information Systems debt-free.

The 19-year-old has a long history of volunteering with the Rotary Club of Silverdale, Haselwood Family YMCA and Children of the Nations, and is committed to staying in the area after graduation and continuing to give back to the community.

That makes Gordon exactly the kind of student Kitsap Bank wants to champion and a perfect example of why the bank has partnered with Olympic College for more than two decades, awarding scholarships and sponsoring the annual Olympic College Community Luncheon fundraiser for its entire 21-year run.

“We see how important education is in our community and, increasingly, how well-respected Olympic College is locally and nationally,” said Anthony George, Kitsap Bank president and chief operating officer. “We see the need for opportunities that community colleges provide in allowing people flexible ways to further their education.”

Also, in honor of the bank’s 100th anniversary in 2008, former Kitsap Bank Chairman of the Board, Helen Langer Smith, established two endowed scholarships that are awarded to students attending Olympic College and Western Washington University in Poulsbo.

There are also internship and employment opportunities for Olympic students at Kitsap Bank, said George. “We’re trying to find talent where we can, particularly if they have a connection to Kitsap.”

Supporting education is deeply rooted in Kitsap Bank’s corporate culture. For more than 40 years, the financial institution has provided an extraordinary employee perk – scholarships to college or technical school for the children of all of its employees.

One of the bank’s early presidents, Hannah Langer, started her career as a teacher. Kitsap Bank was founded in 1908 in Port Orchard and in 1922 Frank E. Langer purchased a controlling interest, beginning a nine-decade commitment to Kitsap County by the Langer family. After his death in 1952, his wife, Hannah, turned down purchase offers from Seattle bankers and became the first female bank president west of the Mississippi. A graduate of WSU, Hannah Langer was a well-respected businesswoman who highly valued education.

That’s why, in addition to the annual $1,500 Kitsap Bank scholarship, which was established in 2004, the bank in 2016 created the Kitsap Bank Merit Scholars Fund with a $25,000 donation that will fund two

School of Business that is open to students in Kitsap and other counties where Kitsap Bank operates.

“There is a common thread among all of these scholarship programs. They are all focused on business-related studies, with the idea that, hopefully, Kitsap Bank will be able to promote and keep talent in our community,” said Shannon Childs, the bank’s senior vice president/marketing director and a past president of the Olympic College Foundation Board.

“A student can begin his or her business studies at Olympic College and move on to complete his or her four-year degree at either Western Washington University in Poulsbo or UW Foster School of Business through the scholarships provided by Kitsap Bank and the Langer family. We would like to see someone take it all the way!”

Kitsap Bank’s commitment to Olympic College has flourished because the school maximizes educational opportunities for local students through technical certificate programs, as well as two-year and four-year degrees, and by partnering with institutions throughout the state, said Childs.

“The community college is open to virtually anyone who wishes to pursue education,” she said, “and scholarships through the Olympic College Foundation are really essential to providing access.”

Both George and Childs have met many memorable Olympic College students over the years.

“I'm very grateful to receive these scholarships. It takes a little bit of the burden off of my parents.”

“I am impressed and in awe of some of the backgrounds of the people I’ve met and some of the things they’ve had to do to get their education,” said George. “It means a lot to them to be helped and they’re genuinely humbled by strangers helping them get their degrees.”

Childs remembers a particular young man whose story moved her when she presented a general scholarship to him in her role as Olympic College Foundation board member.

“He was a family man, pursuing education for the benefit of his career. And in the course of the conversation, he talked about the fact that as a young man, he was athletic, he had great promise, but he took some unfortunate

turns and made some poor choices and really had kind of a rough life. He was pursuing education to become a counselor for individuals battling drug addiction and he talked to me with tears in his eyes about being the first person in his family to go to college. It was really an emotional evening and it made such an impression on me.”

For Gordon, receiving the Kitsap Bank scholarship for the 2016-17 school year is not only recognition of his community service, it’s also a nod to his past and a possible avenue for his future. Banking is in his blood – his grandfather and great-grandfather owned a bank in Silverdale – and because cybersecurity is critical for banks, his interest

in information systems might lead to a career in the family business. Childs has already talked to him about the possibility of a Kitsap Bank internship this summer.

In the meantime, Gordon said receiving the Kitsap Bank award and others totaling $8,000 means he doesn’t have to work full-time while going to school. “I have a twin brother who’s also going to college this year and I’m very grateful to receive these scholarships. It takes a little bit of the burden off of my parents.”

hen Ike and Val Culbertson’s estate donated $30,000 to the Bremerton Sons of Norway Oslo Lodge, the members couldn’t think of a better way to honor the beloved couple than to set up a scholarship fund at Olympic College.

This summer, the first Ike and Val Culbertson Nursing Scholarship will be awarded from an endowment set up with $25,000 of that bequest. The $1,000 renewable scholarship can be used for either the two-year Registered Nurse program or the four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

“We’re pretty proud to be able to do that, to have the money and to give it back to the community,” said Nancy Wood, immediate past president of the Oslo Lodge (2-035 Bremerton). “The shortage of nurses is so high. If we can help catch up that shortage of nurses by offering a scholarship to one student at a time, that would make us happy.”

Val Culbertson was a nurse at Harrison Hospital for 22 years and her husband, Ike, worked there as power plant foreman after retiring from careers in the Navy and as a boiler operator at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Married for a half-century, the

couple was active in the Bremerton Elks and American Legion Post #68 in addition to the Sons of Norway.

“We could not think of anything else to do with the Culbertson money that would honor them as much as a couple as a nursing scholarship,” said Wood. “And, Olympic College has one of the best nursing schools around, so why would we go anywhere else?”

This is the second $25,000 endowed scholarship that the Sons of Norway, Oslo Lodge, has established at Olympic College in two years. Money for the first came from the sale of the organization’s iconic waterfront building adjacent to the Bremerton campus.

Although it’s a general scholarship, inaugural recipient Erik Martin coincidentally is an RN, who is working at Harrison and pursuing his Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing degree. And, although it’s not a requirement, he’s also of Norwegian descent.

“He’s a delightful young man and the fact that he’s Norwegian didn’t hurt,” said Wood, who met Martin and his wife at the Donors & Scholars celebration last June. “That worked out pretty well.”

She said it was important to lodge members to let the community know Sons of Norway was still active in Bremerton. “We didn’t want the community to think we just dissolved.

Olympic College is here within our community and in this day and age, education is at the top of the list. You’ve got to have an education in something to get anywhere. And the Sons of Norway is very strong on education.”

And, although the organization’s building was not permanent, their scholarship fund will be. “We are investing in the school, in the community and in individual young people as they advance their careers,” she said. “The endowment goes on and on. It should outlive us all.”

BIELLA FOUNDATION MAKES HISTORIC DONATION R

ecently, the Biella Foundation of Kirkland, Washington, announced a second gift of $340,000 to all community and technical colleges in Washington State. Olympic College, one of 34 institutions, received a generous gift of $10,000. This scholarship has no restrictions, and may be granted to any student in any program.

The Biella Foundation supports organizations that help families in distress with a special emphasis on education. Joni Wolfe, a spokesperson for the Foundation, said “Community colleges provide a quality education and a springboard to a four-year school. Community colleges are special because they allow people to go to school with a quality education at an affordable price. We’re hoping a gift like this can inspire other foundations.”

Mart Bert, a successful Seattle real-estate developer, established the Biella Foundation in 1982. Mr. Bert immigrated to the US from Italy at the age of three with his parents; the Foundation is named after the Italian town where his parents were married.

Funds from this gift have been awarded to the Practical Nursing Program at Olympic College.

innie Davis '09 worked the graveyard shift to earn money to pursue her dream of a nursing degree. Bryan Huddleston '13 was inspired to battle through tough engineering classes because he knew someone believed in him. And Ashley Jones '15 is juggling work and school to improve her family’s prospects since her husband was injured in Iraq.

What do they have in common? Olympic College Foundation scholarships changed their lives, helping Davis and Huddleston to earn degrees and supporting Jones as she works toward a bachelor’s in Organizational Leadership and Technical Management this spring.

On Oct. 10, 2016 attendees at the circusthemed 21st Annual Olympic College Community Luncheon came together to support students like Davis, Huddleston, Jones and many others who aspire to improve their lives through higher education.

One of the most important features of the annual fundraiser is the chance to hear

directly from students about what the community’s generosity means to them.

“It’s a great feeling when someone you’ve never met before selects your name from a long list of candidates and basically changes your life,” said Huddleston. “The idea that someone believes in you. That’s what makes the difference.”

Jones agreed: “We begin to aim higher, unleash our ambitions and see the bigger picture.”

Olympic College President David Mitchell reported on that bigger picture, detailing expanded opportunities for local students to earn four-year degrees close to home.

“Not long ago, there wasn’t one publicly funded baccalaureate program in Kitsap.

Now, we are closing in on a dozen. This is real access and opportunity for our citizens.”

Davis reminded attendees that it takes their support to make that promise of access real for all students. “With your help, look at what we can become,” she said, in a student-made film shown at the luncheon.

The aim is to provide opportunities for comparative thinking about the cultural and anthropological development of the Irish, from the earliest tribal settlements, through the colonization experience, the experience of political, cultural and economic revolution, and the emergence of a modern Irish Republic 100 years after independence.

n spring of 2016, Olympic College had the opportunity to participate in a detailed study of the economic impact on the local community, the region and the state. The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) commissioned Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI) to complete the analysis for all system colleges, and Olympic College took advantage of the option to look more closely at data specific to Olympic College.

The report, The Economic Value of Olympic College, considered a number of factors including student expenditure while attending the college, the college as a consumer and an employer, the economic impact of alumni who remain in the area after graduation, and college construction projects.

According to the report, OC added $412.4 million to Kitsap and Mason county economies during the study year of 2014-15.

This represents approximately 3.3% of the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gross Regional Product, which is nearly as large as the entire construction industry in the region.

For students, the average annual return on investment is 13.3% â&#x20AC;&#x201C; double the stock market 10-year average return on investment.

This return on investment comes by way of calculated increased earnings, which college graduates realize over the course of their careers.

The significance of OC alumni on the local economy was discussed in detail. Over 80% of OC students stay in the region, and their contribution as consumers, employees and employers over their lifetimes is significant.

EMSI used a calculation combining income of alumni and of businesses that employ alumni, and took into account the increased earnings and productivity gained from their OC education. The accumulated impact of former students currently employed in the OC Service Area workforce amounted to $357 million in added income to the local economy.

The report highlights return on investment for students, taxpayers and society. For every $1 spent by students at OC, they stand to gain $3.10 in increased earnings. Taxpayers gain $3 in added state revenue and social savings, while society gains $8.90 for every dollar invested in the college, through added taxes and public sector savings.

y 2025, an estimated 60 million Baby Boomers are expected to exit the workforce, creating a shortage of managers across all industries. A new four-year degree program at Olympic College aims to help fill that talent gap.

“The goal of the program is to facilitate the transformation of technical professionals into technical leaders,” said Dr. Philip Mathew, who helped launch the Bachelor of Applied Science in Organizational Leadership and Technical Management in the fall of 2015.

“What this does is take their content expertise, such as culinary arts, welding or information systems, and build on that with two more years of leadership and technical management training.”

The program provides a pathway to a bachelor’s degree for professional technical students or anyone with an associate’s degree and prepares them for supervisory roles in private, public and nonprofit organizations.

Leslie Pfau is in the first cohort of 25 students on track to graduate with the new degree in the spring of 2017. She entered with an associate’s degree in business management and said the organizational leadership training is already boosting her career as marketing coordinator for a Silverdale mortgage company.

“It’s giving me a polish I didn’t have before,” she said. “It gives you a sense of confidence. It gives you a knowledge base so you feel confident in your ability to make a good management decision.”

Pfau said she started as a receptionist at Directors Mortgage and was able to use what she was learning in the degree program to advance into the marketing position. “I stepped up and was able to write a marketing plan and actually make a difference in my work environment.”

The Organizational Leadership and Technical Management degree is Olympic College’s third bachelor’s program. In order to win state approval, the college had to provide substantive proof of local need and support.

Mathew said the numbers were compelling: A survey of local employers showed that 78 percent preferred bachelors-prepared students for leadership roles.

Classes include small group communication, industrial/organizational psychology, business ethics and policy, negotiation and conflict, leading strategic change, leading in a digital economy, workplace safety and quality management. Combining on-line and on-campus classes, the program is designed so that students can complete it while working full time.

“The great thing about this degree is that it’s cross-disciplinary,” said Mathew. “It’s brought in disciplines from across Olympic College because we live in that type of world.”

The approach is hands-on and students focus on applying knowledge through case studies and simulations. “When people come into class, they’re not just sitting and hearing someone talk. They come in and work with other students to apply these things to various case studies and problems we provide. Whatever you learn in class, you can apply the next day at work.”

Pfau, the organizational management student, said one of the memorable moments from fall quarter 2016 was meeting with the owners of Silver City Brewery and learning how they run their business and interact with employees.

“They’re doing everything that we’re learning in our classes. It was amazing to see. It was really validating, too, because we’re studying something that’s in practice and succeeding in practice.”

Wheeler, the advisory committee member, noted that he started his post-secondary education at Olympic College, but had to transfer to an on-line program through Chapman University to earn a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership. He’s excited that students now have a local option for all four years.

“This is a seamless transition into the leadership portion of the degree,” he said. “It’s more cohesive. Once you’re on campus, you’re in the routine, you’re rolling, you have daycare set up and you know your counselors. To me, that’s worth a lot.”

And there’s no doubt that those employers will face a shortage of managers in the coming years. The US Census Bureau projects that as 60 million Baby Boomers leave the workforce by 2025, only 40 million people will enter. “With the exodus of senior leadership, employers are asking how they can manage the talent pipeline,” said Mathew.

Greg Wheeler, a Puget Sound Naval Shipyard employee and Bremerton city councilman, is a member of an industry panel advising Olympic College on the degree program. He said the shipyard and other employers want to hire well-rounded individuals who know how to work as part of a team and have skills in decision-making and communications.

With that in mind, the curriculum for the degree program takes a holistic approach that incorporates technical skills within an industry, human skills, such as the ability to work with others, and conceptual skills, such as the ability to step back and gain perspective on an organization.

car-accident victim is in the Neuro-ICU with a closed head injury. As three nurses perform a head-to-toe assessment on the unidentified man, start an IV and chart his vital signs, they notice a worrisome change.

His pulse and respiratory rate have dropped significantly while his blood pressure is shooting up.

“I need to get the physician right now,” primary nurse Crystal Howard says with calm authority as she dials the phone. When asked for her assessment, she replies without hesitation: “I think there’s some intracranial pressure.”

The caregivers – Howard, Nikki Gilman and Elizabeth Mason – are second-year Olympic College nursing students. And the patient is a medical mannequin in the Nursing Simulation Lab, where students put their classroom learning to the test in realistic, but risk-free scenarios.

Howard’s diagnosis is correct and before the simulation is done, the students will order an emergency CT scan, determine that a diuretic is needed and agree to prep the patient for a craniotomy to relieve pressure.

Whether the students do everything correctly or make critical errors in the simulation lab, the benefits are the same – a real-time learning experience that complements their clinical training in area medical facilities.

It makes it more real. We can do things we can't do in clinicals or can't guarantee in clinicals. It gives us a chance to go through a scenario.

“They caught on really quickly,” said Andrea Embree-Russell '15, the lab resource nurse who ran the simulation and controlled the mannequin’s lifelike symptoms with a laptop computer. If they hadn’t,

The lab also allows nursing students to experience a broad range of emergency situations that might not occur during their clinical training.

No one can guarantee a student will have the opportunity to care for a patient with a heart attack, for example, or treat a pregnant woman with life-threatening eclampsia.

But the simulation lab can provide those learning experiences for multiple students repeatedly throughout their training. Students participate in required simulations, but can also schedule simulation lab time for extra practice.

Second-year student Kyra Nathan said her most memorable simulation was one where things went wrong. Her assignment was to start an IV and she went into the exercise feeling confident. She had practiced and felt ready, but in the heat of the moment, she couldn’t find the vein.

“I had to put my nurse face on and stay calm and ask for help,” she recalled. “I experienced what it was like if you don’t get it the first time and it solidified the need to practice more and the teamwork aspect of nursing.”

A landmark study by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing showed that such simulations are so effective that they can be substituted for up to 50 percent of traditional clinical experiences.

Olympic College was an early adopter of the technology, said Babbo, starting about a decade ago with a mannequin donated by the Tim Ryan family. The program currently has a pediatric mannequin, a birthing mannequin and “Meti-man,” the figure used for the intracranial pressure simulation and the program’s most sophisticated “patient.”

“I can change everything, the blood pressure, the heart rate and heart rhythm,” said Embree-Russell. She can add a heart murmur or an ominous crackle in the lungs and can alter the appearance of the mannequin’s eyes to indicate a severe head injury.

“It makes it more real. We can do things we can’t do in clinicals or can’t guarantee in clinicals,” she said. “It gives us a chance to go through a scenario.”

“It’s really quite wonderful technology. It really does facilitate learning,” added Babbo.

In September 2017, the nursing program’s simulation lab space will double when the new College Instruction Center opens on the Bremerton Campus. That will allow flexibility to run multiple simulations at the same time for the nursing program’s 70 students.

The new facility will also include a room where students can practice administering medications and assessing patients’ reactions.

As part of the expansion, Babbo said the program hopes to add an updated childbirth simulator known as Lucina, a wireless mannequin that allows realistic simulations of everything from a normal delivery

to complications that include maternal hemorrhage and the baby being in breech position.

There are currently two nursing faculty members who are certified to run simulations. With support from the Olympic College Foundation, that number is on track to double as part of the simulation lab expansion.

Embree-Russell, the lab resource nurse, is also a graduate of the Olympic College nursing program and can attest to the practical benefits of the simulations she now oversees. In her final quarter, she took part in a scenario in which the patient went into cardiac arrest.

She performed CPR and went through the emergency protocol stepby-step.

A year later, when she was a practicing nurse, she had a similar experience with a flesh-and-blood patient. “I got the call. The patient arrested and I remembered that simulation. It wasn’t what I learned in all the classes that came back to me. It was that muscle memory I had that came back and I felt like it was such a powerful tool.”

Alumni Association earns 3rd place for Mardi Gras float The Olympic College Alumni Association earned 3rd place and $1,000 at the annual Clearwater Casino Resort Fat Tuesday Parade of Service on February 28, 2017 Twenty Kitsap County non-profits participated in the event, creating elaborate floats depicting the mission and service of their organization. Judging was based on originality, execution, and relationship to organizational services provided.

The OC float, built on a red wagon, contained a massive pile of textbooks, a huge mortarboard graduation cap, and a diploma scroll. The fictional book titles highlighted programs available at Olympic College, such as "Geology by Roxanne Minerals", "Culinary Arts: How to be Clever with a Cleaver", and "Nursing: We Can’t Fix Stupid But We Can Sedate It." We enjoyed participating in this fun event, and thank Clearwater Casino for its continuing support of non-profit organizations in Kitsap County.

Poulsbo Volunteer of the Year Olympic College Foundation Board President Jim Sund named Volunteer of the Year Jim Sund received the Pearce Dressel Award for Volunteer of the Year from the Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce. The award honors a person who has devoted an exceptional amount of unpaid time and effort for the benefit of the community, and was presented at the Poulsbo Chamber Awards Gala on January 21, 2017.

Jim, a long-time business owner in Poulsbo, volunteers with the Poulsbo Rotary, West Sound Technical Skills Center, the Jewel Box Theatre, North Kitsap Fishline, North Kitsap High School, and many other organizations. Jim is also the president of the Olympic College Foundation Board.

When asked how he finds the time to work with so many worthy causes, Jim replied, “You make the time.” We are thankful that Jim “makes the time” for Olympic College, and greatly appreciate his integrity and quiet leadership.

OC Alumni honored by Silverdale Chamber of Commerce Olympic College Alumni honored by the Silverdale Chamber of Commerce at its annual Accolades & Installation Banquet on January 20, 2017 KristiAnn Stecker received the Paul J. Linder Service Award for Chamber Member of the Year. The award recognizes a chamber member who has a significant record of service and diligence to the Chamber, and has given their time, talent, and resources. KristiAnn is an AVP / Branch Manager of First Federal Community Bank in Silverdale, and serves on the Olympic College Foundation Alumni Committee.

Kevin Wiley is Silverdale Citizen of the Year, an award given to an individual whose contributions of time, energy, and talent help develop a sense of community in Silverdale. Kevin is a District Branch Manager at Waddell & Reed, one of the nation’s most enduring financial planning firms. Kevin serves as the Chair of the Kitsap Business Forum and is the Governance Committee Chair of the Olympic College Foundation.
