Celebrating 90 years and a Happy New Year

H

appy New Year. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season.

Our family closed out the year celebrating my uncle, Dr. Paul Glassman’s, 90th birthday surrounded by cousins, friends and more than 60 family members at Trump International in Sunny Isles. It was a meaningful gathering that brought together generations and longtime friendships. My cousins - Dr. Todd Glassman, Monica Glassman, Erika Glassman and Aaron Glassman - were there, along with many of my uncle’s oldest friends, all coming together to mark an incredible milestone. I was grateful to share the celebration with my daughter, Madison, and my son, Brax. It was truly a special moment for our family.

As we begin the new year, we are honored to once again feature Horse Farms Forever, a longtime blessing to our community. Their work continues to protect and preserve the land that defines Marion County - from our iconic horse farms to our springs and conservation areas. As we look ahead into 2026, their mission and impact remain as important as ever.

This month’s charity spotlight focuses on NAMI Marion County, an organization dedicated to advocating for better lives for individuals living with mental illness. While the holidays are behind us, the impact they leave can linger well into the new year for those who are struggling. We encourage our community to lead with kindness and compassion, remembering that we never truly know what someone else may be facing.

A Healthier Way Forward

I Ben Marciano is the mayor of Ocala.

can’t remember when I started making New Year’s resolutions, but I can say I distinctly remember my fitness journey. I remember wanting to put on size and deciding to lift weights. I was in high school and much smaller in every way than pretty much everybody else. It really bothered me, so I began working out and decided to be more disciplined with what I ate. Counting grams of protein and measuring out weight gainers quickly became part of my everyday life. Fast-forward a few years and what once was a personal mission morphed into a career. This once deeply personal quest is now the vehicle that puts food on my family’s table.

In the last couple of years, however, health and fitness have taken on a whole new meaning. While I have no problem with the fitness portion because of decades of commitment and research, the health part didn’t come as quickly. I thought health meant eating the right things, but it’s actually so much more than that. Health is your overall well-being, which has many facets; mental health plays such a crucial role.

For me, staying away from social media is as critical to my health as not overindulging in baked goods. And giving other people grace, trying to understand someone else’s perspective, or even using humor to ease tension is as good for my soul as a hearty salad is for my gut health.

These days, my workouts don’t just include cardio and weights, but prayer, reading good books, meditating, and working through childhood trauma. This is how I stay fit and healthy.

I encourage all of us to take small steps toward a healthier, more balanced life this year.

hen you talk to Preston Bowlin, nothing about him suggests he is seeking the spotlight. He has the calm, steady presence of someone who has spent a lifetime reading rooms, watching patterns, and thinking three steps ahead. You quickly understand why people trust him.

Before you know the titles, before the decades of service, before the deployments and the emergencies he has managed, you feel the truth of him. He is a protector. A planner. A thinker. Someone who has built his life around making sure everyone else gets to go home safely at the end of the day.

And when Ocala Magazine began its search for a person who embodies strength, humility, service, and heart, the choice became clear.

This is the year of Preston Bowlin.

A Calling That Started Early Ask Preston where all this began, and he will tell you public safety was never a job he stumbled into. It was a calling he recognized even as a teenager.

“Public safety has always been a calling for me,” he said. “Even in high school, I was looking for ways to serve the community.”

He became a fire explorer in high school, already learning the rhythm of emergency response. On the day he graduated, he stepped straight into the fire service in a small town outside Las Vegas. He was not yet 18 when he took his first real steps into a life of service, and he never stepped back.

Life took him across the country, from Nevada to Miami, to volunteer stations in Keystone Heights, to Waldo and Starke, and eventually to Ocala Fire Rescue, where

“Public safety has always been a calling for me,” Bowlin said. “Even in high school, I was looking for ways to serve the community.” he rose through the ranks and retired as a training captain.

His path was never easy, but it was always steady. Always purposeful. Always about the work, not the spotlight.

His family shares that same dedication to serving others. His son is now a paramedic firefighter. His wife is an ER nurse who also works in administrative emergency management. Preston did not just build a career. He built a legacy of care, of service, of showing up.

"Every part of my life has been in public safety and public service." He said.

The Mind of a Planner What makes Preston different is not simply the years he has put in. It is the way he thinks.

He has a way of recognizing trouble early, before most people even notice it.

He sees gaps long before they put anyone at risk.

Even on an ordinary night watching television, he catches himself analyzing a disaster happening somewhere else in the country and quietly asking, could that hap-

pen here? If it did, how would we respond?

His wife, an ER nurse who also works in administrative emergency management, used to think he was a little crazy for how much his mind stayed on high alert, until she stepped into that world herself. Now, as Preston jokes, “we stay up a lot at night thinking about worst-case scenarios.”

Planning is a form of protection. Most of us never realize how much thinking, analyzing, and anticipating happens behind the scenes to keep our community safe. Preston does that work before the storm, before the fire, before the outbreak, before the crisis ever touches our community.

He is the person who asks the hard questions before the rest of us ever have to.

Leading With Humility Despite decades of service, from paramedic classrooms to firehouses to state deployments, Preston speaks more about teams than about himself.

He talks about firefighters sleeping in contaminated gear in the old days and how the culture had to change to save lives. He talks about younger responders who depend

on older ones to reinforce safety, integrity, and education. He talks about the sheriffs, the cities, the county commissions, the hospitals, the state partners, all of the hands that must work together when something goes wrong.

He carries no ego. He never once tells a story in which he is the hero. If anything, he seems surprised that others see his accomplishments.

just to say thank you. The students he trained who are now saving others. The firefighters and deputies he helped protect from unseen hazards like carcinogens or fentanyl exposure. The families who made it home because his team planned months or years ahead.

He talks about Hurricane Irma, the largest sheltering event in Florida history, which he coordinated only three months after taking the job in emergency management.

“It's not about me. It's about working as a team. It's about building good partnerships and doing the right thing at the right time.”

“I’ve never been into the limelight,” he said. “It’s not about me. It’s about working as a team. It’s about building good partnerships and doing the right thing at the right time.”

He has guided Marion County through hurricanes, ground depressions, storms, threats, and even COVID-19, always insisting the credit belongs to the people beside him. The partners who shape the response.

The community that steps in to help. The staff who work until the job is done.

That is what leadership looks like at its best.

Moments That Define a Life of Service Ask Preston which accomplishment means the most, and he does not name a title or an award. He does not talk about the statewide committees he has served on, the EMS protocols he helped shape, or the Narcan program he built from scratch that now saves lives across Marion County.

He talks about reputation. Responsibility. Quiet outcomes.

He talks about the people who stopped breathing and later returned to the station

He talks about COVID-19, and how Marion County stayed three steps ahead because he and his team were watching what failed in other places, seeing where the problems were, and addressing them before they ever reached the community.

Nothing is small to him.

Everything is connected.

Everyone matters.

The Award He Never Saw Coming When Preston learned about the Hometown Heroes Awards Gala, he fully intended to attend, not for himself, but to support a colleague he believed was being honored that night. That was never in question.

But the day of the ceremony turned into one of those days where everything needed his attention at once. He was working late, juggling media calls about a ground depression in southwest Marion County, answering public records requests, and trying to wrap up reports that were all waiting on his desk.

By the time he looked up, he was al-

ready running behind. His uniform had just come back from the dry cleaners, but when he opened the bag, the brass pins were not put back on, a detail that mattered to him. In the moment, it felt like a sign that maybe he should stay at the office and finish the work still waiting for him.

He called his wife to tell her he might not make it.

She did not accept that.

She told him to get dressed anyway.

If the uniform was not right, she said she would bring him a suit. In the way only a spouse can, she pushed him past the long day and everything still on his plate, reminding him that he needed to be there.

So he went.

And when he walked into the room and began hearing his own career read aloud, decades of service, deployments, training, teaching, and protecting, something slowly settled in.

He was not there to support someone else.

He was there because his community and his peers were honoring him.

That evening, Preston Bowlin received the Founders Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hometown Heroes Awards Gala.

“I was shocked,” he said. “It’s never been about me. But I’m blessed. I’ve been given opportunities, and I’ve had the support of my family. I’ve always just wanted to make a difference.”

That humility is why the award matters.

That humility is also why he deserves it.

A Legacy Still in Motion Even now, Preston is thinking ahead, protecting the next generation, planning for tomorrow’s storms, teaching the next responders, and still showing up for his grandchildren’s games, balancing the weight of service with the pull of family.

He knows sacrifice intimately. Missed holidays. Missed milestones. Long nights.

Quiet strain. But he also knows purpose, the kind that shapes a whole community.

Ocala is safer because this man thinks the way he does.

How horses think Dr. Temple Grandin's incredibly inspiring keynote

hat an incredibly inspiring keynote presentation

by Dr. Temple Grandin at Horse Farms Forever’s sixth annual Conservation Summit held on Thursday, November 13th at Ocala Breeders’ Sales Arena. With a sold-out crowd of nearly 600 guests, you could feel the excitement and the energy in the room!

Dr. Grandin is one of the worlds most renowned scientists and it was a true honor to hear her speak about her insights into animal behavior and her own personal experience and research on autism. Her remarks about How Horses Think, were deeply insightful, backed by concrete examples, and peppered with witty, humorous comments!

This year’s Summit highlighted the deep-rooted bond between horses and humans. Dr. Grandin shares this deep bond with horses. While she was growing up, horses provided solace and meaning for her as a teenager as she attended a boarding school with an equine program.

Horses to the Rescue

During high school, Dr. Grandin was bullied, but she found a refuge at the school’s horse barn, which was part of the school’s educational program.

“The only place I was not bullied was with the horses,” she said. “That was the one place. They basically saved my teenage years.

I had friends through riding horses and going to shows and I also learned how to work.

I had nine stalls to clean and I had to run a horse barn.”

Working with horses and with the strong influence from her mother and her high school science teacher gave her the

confidence to pursue her research on animal behavior and livestock welfare. In 1989, she earned her Ph.D. in Animal Science from the University of Illinois. Dr. Grandin is now a Distinguished Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University.

Animals Think in Pictures

Through Dr. Grandin’s own experiences with autism, and her career as a scientist, led her to the realization that she thinks in pictures, and that animals also think in pictures.

“My memory is like the pictures on your phone,” she said.

This unique perspective gave her an advantage to understanding animal behavior.

While her research is primarily about cattle, her research and observations also apply to horses and other animals. “If you want to understand a horse or any animal, you have to get away from words,” said Dr. Grandin.

“It’s a sensory-based world; it’s not a wordbased world. What is it seeing? Some of the first work I ever did with cattle, I got into the cattle handling facility, and I saw they were scared of shadows and reflections. These are things we don’t normally think about.”

When Dr. Grandin was in her late 30s, she discovered that there are different

types of thought, such as word or mathematical thinkers.

“It was a shock to me that a lot of people are not visual thinkers, they may be mathematical thinkers, word thinkers or maybe mixtures,” said Dr. Grandin. “When you realize that people think differently, you get a lot of insight. You get a lot of insight into horses and other animals when I realized other people didn’t think in pictures.”

Behavior of Horses

Dr. Grandin’s presentation provided many fascinating and enlightening insights about horses and animal behavior. Horses don’t have language, they store memories of good or bad things as a picture, a smell, a touch, or something they hear.

• To desensitize horses to new objects, it’s best to allow the horses to voluntarily approach the object. “It’s scary if you shove it in their face; that’s something that you don’t want to do,” she said. “If you want to get horses used to flags at shows, let’s decorate the pasture fence with flags, and let your animals walk up to it.”

• Dr. Grandin also shared an example of a horse that was scared of black hats.

Horses associate what they see when something bad happens to them. “There’s a horse I talk about who is scared to death of black hats. White hats are fine; black hats are bad,” she said. “It’s sensory-based, not word-based.”

• Dr. Grandin also described horses she watched at a dressage show that were competing in a cool, indoor arena but

were dripping with sweat. She noted that the horse that won was calm and relaxed.

• It takes 20 to 30 minutes for horses to calm down. “If something happens suddenly, it’s scary to animals. It’s also scary to people with autism,” said Dr. Grandin.

Groundbreaking Research

Her groundbreaking innovations in the humane handling of livestock are used by many companies around the world. She has also been instrumental in implementing animal welfare auditing programs that are used

by McDonalds, Wendy’s, Whole Foods, and other corporations. Temple has appeared on numerous TV shows such as 20/20 and Prime Time.

She is the author of twelve books on autism and animal behavior, including the national bestsellers Calling All Minds, Thinking in Pictures, and Animals in Translation. Temple was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in September 2017. In 2010, she was named to Time magazine’s list of the 100 people who most affect the world.

W

hen Heather Dawn Batchelor walked into Marion Cultural Alliance for the first time in 2022 to drop off her jury-selected piece, she did not realize the moment would change the trajectory of her path after moving to Ocala. Yet as nervous as the idea seemed, the openness and encouragement left a lasting impression, ultimately sparking a call to serve. Heather’s first role placed her on the advisory committee for the annual Applaud the Arts, the signature celebration of art and artists in Ocala’s community, opening her eyes and, at times, overwhelming her with this community’s embrace of all things art.

Originally from Zionsville, Indiana, Midwestern values grounded her sense of work ethic and appreciation for quiet, sprawling spaces where the mind could roam free. She was blessed to attend the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, a place her father had dreamed of attending. This led to the opportunity to study abroad in China, where her focus centered on traditional Chinese ink landscape painting. She credits this experience with honing her ability to capture atmosphere, essence, and spirit rather than literal interpretation.

Traveling through Europe only heightened that inspiration, not necessarily or always by way of museums or galleries, but by interacting with the souls of each society.

How they lived, lights reflecting out of home windows, smells wafting from bakery fronts, craftsmen applying their trades. She credits these moments with exposing her to culture in ways she would not have otherwise received, and she continues to capture the light, movement, and color of everyday life.

Her memories still traverse their way into her paintings today.

Everyone has a first love, and Heather’s sang to her through music. Violin and piano came first, and theatre followed naturally, eventually leading her to dance. Studying ballet at Butler University Conservatory, then continuing at a local studio, locked that passion in place. The sense of movement never left her, even as her creativity shifted and took on new forms.

After moving back to Indiana, she took an entrepreneurial path, founding Paul & Lydia, an internationally sold handbag company featuring equestrian patterns. Before she was able to outsource production, Heather spent countless nights in an upstairs bedroom hand-sewing each piece. While she always believed herself to be an artist in some way, shape, and form, painting returned to the center of her life after stepping away from the business in 2018.

Having lived in large landscapes, she continued to find herself craving a balance of space and light that brought a feeling of home.

Ocala offered that balance. The natural landscape, light, pace, and strong equestrian and creative communities drew her in and became the place where her creativity could breathe and deepen. Returning to painting felt like coming home, both to herself and as the most honest way to express ideas with emotion and meaning without literal interpretation.

Painting is how Heather processes her world. It’s where everything she has taken in over time, places, movement, light, memory, finds a place to land. Over time, it became clear this wasn’t just personal expression, but something that resonated with others, making her career feel less like a decision and more like an alignment with who she was created to be. Over the past year, she has fully embraced the title of artist, especially after feeling the Lord confirm that calling in her spirit.

Her work is abstract and rooted in a sense of place, not through literal landscapes, but through how places feel and stay with us. She works with restrained, neutral foundations layered over time, then introduces bold marks or moments of color, what she calls “points of clarity.” These marks represent joy, spirit, and meaning emerging from stillness and structure.

She draws inspiration from place, light, memory, and atmosphere.

Influences include Ralph Lauren’s sense of world-building, Architectural Digest interiors, and filmmakers like Wes Anderson, creators who build worlds you want to enter. Nature, faith, and everyday moments also play a role. Collected, restrained, and intentional, her home is built upon neutrals so she can see color clearly when she paints.

Over time, it layers texture, art, and meaningful objects, remaining calm and ordered so creativity and joy can show up where it matters.

Heather’s work has been shown and collected both locally and internationally. In Ocala, her paintings are featured throughout the Reilly Arts Center, including two large-scale works installed in the Founders Club. She will also be featured at Angie Lewis State Farm from January through April 2026 and has an upcoming solo exhibition at the Silver Springs State Park Visitors Center beginning in September 2026. She is represented by Axiom Fine Art in Winter Park, Florida, which promotes her work throughout the United States and Canada. She also shares her work through her website, www.hdbfineart.com, and online platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.

She teaches at the Appleton Museum of Art and through her church, Central Christian. Heather maintains a strong relationship with Seth Benzel at 8th Ave Gallery and supports events such as Battle of the Brushes. In 2025, she officially added serving on the Board of Directors of Marion Cultural Alliance to her resume and is a founding member of Creative Ladies, a small group of five women who intentionally support one another and consistently show up for each other’s creative work. Heather credits these friendships and their support as invaluable.

Actively involved with several arts and cultural organizations, she believes supporting the local arts community is deeply important.

Ocala has a strong creative spirit, and she values being part of its growth, visibility, and support system.

ecently, Marion Cultural Alliance hosted the 18th Applaud the Arts. They celebrated a legacy of serving as Ocala/Marion County’s champion of arts. Since 2001, MCA’s cultural grants initiative has distributed over $615,000 to local organizations.

The recent Applaud the Arts had the theme of Olympus Odyssey. Guests were greeted at the Appleton Museum of Arts by living statues and an aerialist soaring from a 21-foot frame by Artify Ocala.

Guests passed through the Gates of

Olympus for a complimentary aperitif sponsored by Stacey Atsides and Stella’s Modern Pantry, as well as an interactive installation designed by Drake Arnold and other dazzling backdrops.

Attendees finished their journey in the Agora with Greek bites by La Casella, baklava and wine by Stella’s Modern Pantry, as well as beer.

There was a silent auction where ten incredible trips, including two to Greece, unique experiences, and original art donated by local artists, were eagerly sought after.

There was an art immersion experience and ambiance with creative elements by Kiah, Artify Ocala, Party Time, and more.

Overall, Olympus Odyssey brought together myth, art, and magic.

rtini 2025, hosted by the Magnolia Art Exchange, offered patrons a chance to test both their palates and their eyes as they attempted to match five signature martinis with paintings created by artists in residence at the MAX. Resident artists included Gavin Pate, Roseprimevere Anakoana, Kayla Moffatt and Sarah Lajealle, along with special guest Heather Dawn Batchelor. Their works teemed with color and purpose, depicting everything from Arabian princesses to toothy flower bearers. Chromatic splashes danced across abstract pieces, creating a lively display of varied genres in artistic expression.

Cocktails were presented by Tom McDonald of Midtown Station; Sam Betty of Mutiny Ocala; Buck Martin and his wife, Amber, of The Tipsy Skipper; Victor Liberty of Mellow Mushroom Ocala; and Katy Massingill of Black Sheep on Broadway.

Their creations took the art of mixology to the next level, featuring espresso-infused bourbons, hibiscus-infused gins, housemade syrups and inventive takes on a French 75. Guests were pleasantly surprised when they matched pairings incorrectly, noting it as a testament to how thoughtfully the cocktails were crafted.

Food pairings designed to complement both the drinks and the artwork were provided by Tucker Bengoa, manager of The Flying Boat Taproom, and his staff. Desserts were provided by Erica Finkel of Pastry Planet Patisserie, and a nonalcoholic beverage was served by Jen St. John of Muddy Lotus Tea. Throughout the evening, guests were invited to explore the Magnolia Art Exchange’s historic galleries, meet local artists, and enjoy music provided by Olivia Ortiz.

The event also included a surprise visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, sponsored by Curiosity Clever Photography.

he Historic Ocala Preservation Society (HOPS) hosted its Holiday Home Tour on December 6, inviting the community to explore a selection of homes in Ocala’s Southeast Historic District. Ocala Christmas Parade

T

he Ocala Christmas Parade marked a milestone this year as it celebrated its 70th anniversary.

Since its founding in 1955, the parade has become one of Marion County’s most cherished traditions, bringing thousands together each holiday season to share in community spirit and festive joy.

The first Ocala Christmas Parade was organized by the Downtown Business Council, with Stanley Malever serving as the event’s original chairperson. His leadership, along with the council’s efforts, established the groundwork for what would soon become a beloved annual celebration.

As the parade grew in popularity, responsibility eventually shifted to the Ocala/ Marion County Chamber of Commerce under the direction of Phyllis Hamm, who continued to foster the parade’s growth and community involvement.

In 1999, a significant transition occurred when the Friends of the Christmas Parade stepped in to develop and lead the event into a new era of expansion and community engagement. Under the guidance of Sue Mosley, the parade continued to evolve and flourish, becoming the large-scale, joyful celebration locals know and love today.

A key part of the parade’s early success can be traced to Bernard and Theresa Castro, who moved to Marion County in the early 1960s. Founders of the renowned Castro Convertibles furniture company in New York, the couple was drawn to Florida and fell in love with the rolling hills of Marion County. Their contributions to the region extended far beyond business endeavors. Theresa Castro became one of the most influential civic leaders in Marion County’s history. She was instrumental in founding the Ocala Royal Dames for Cancer Research, an organization that remains

active and impactful today, and she organized the first Royal Dames Debutante Ball. Bernard Castro played a key role in spearheading the Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club, and the couple’s farms later became the future site of Golden Ocala, which hosted the prestigious 2009 USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, the first major golf championship of its kind in Marion County.

The Castros’ commitment to the Ocala Christmas Parade is also woven into its history. In the mid-1960s, they commissioned the Silver Springs creative design team to construct the parade’s first official Santa Claus float. That iconic float continues to be used today, serving as a living reminder of their innovative spirit and dedication to preserving holiday magic for generations of families.

In honor of this legacy, the Friends of the Christmas Parade selected Bernadette Castro, daughter of Bernard and Theresa Castro, as the grand marshal of the 2025 Ocala Christmas Parade. Bernadette has

long been a dedicated supporter of Marion County, contributing to local organizations and community initiatives that reflect her family’s passion for service. She described the honor as representing her parents in what she called a “Norman Rockwell painting” of Ocala’s community.

This year’s parade featured entries from as far away as Jacksonville and marked one of the largest turnouts of local businesses, nonprofits and school marching bands, along with military groups, local car clubs and dance troupes. As Ocala celebrates 70 years of parade traditions, it also honors the individuals who laid the foundation for events that bring the community together. This year’s parade stands as a tribute not only to its remarkable longevity but also to the Castro family’s lasting influence. Through their creativity, generosity and unwavering involvement, the Castros helped ensure the Ocala Christmas Parade continues to shine brightly, lighting up the hearts of Marion County residents for generations to come.

he Kiwanis Club of Ocala started Camp Kiwanis Summer Camp 78 years ago, and 2025 marked the 67th annual Pancake Breakfast, held Saturday, Dec. 13, at Eighth Street Elementary School. For every $250 raised, a child receives a scholarship to attend camp at no cost to their family. This annual event continues to help fund summer camp experiences for children throughout the community.

Campers this coming year will enjoy views of Mill Dam Lake, surrounded by the shade of oak trees nestled in the heart of the Ocala National Forest. The spring-fed lake sits on 168 acres in Mill Dam and offers a true Florida staple: water activities. Camp Kiwanis serves children ages 7 to 13 and provides opportunities to canoe, swim, participate in field games and archery, and explore their creative side through arts and crafts. Camp runs in three five-day sessions each summer and is open to all Marion County children.

The Kiwanis Club partners with Marion County Public Schools for this and many other initiatives benefiting local youth.

Members also advocate for literacy through the “Reach Out and Read” program, providing pediatricians with books to share with families at an early age. Each child who attended this year’s Pancake Breakfast received a book, presented by the guest of honor, Santa Claus himself.

The dedication of those who support the annual Pancake Breakfast is a true testament to keeping opportunities alive for local youth. Pancake lovers from across the area have sponsored the Kiwanis Club and the children it serves for decades, many longer than they have lived in Ocala and, in some cases, longer than some of us have been alive.

The Kiwanis Club of Ocala invites community members to become involved by attending weekly Friday meetings at the Ocala Elks Lodge, located at 702 NE 25th

he Christmas Connection, held Friday, Dec. 12, brought friends and community members together for a morning of giving, connection and holiday cheer. The gathering focused on thoughtful, practical donations, including clothing, pajamas, household items and personal care products - everyday essentials that make a meaningful impact. Guests enjoyed time together, shared conversation and embraced the festive spirit, with plenty of holiday touches and ugly sweaters adding to the fun.

The Historic Perry Plantation and the Misty Morning Hounds Experience

his story is dedicated to my dad and hero, David Alan Barton.

I grew up in England and mostly on horseback, and that started before I could even walk. As a young child, perhaps as young as 7 or 8 years old, I was out on fox hunts on my pony and later my horse. I am a lifelong animal lover and had no desire to catch up with a fox and, in fact, on the rare occasion that the hounds caught a fox, I left rapidly, returning to the horse trailer usually parked back at the pub where the hunt met.

The opportunity to gallop across the beautiful English countryside was rare, as this was the only time that farmers moved cattle and other livestock and opened up their farms for us to ride for miles. My pony galloped behind the adult riders on much larger horses, who were themselves following the huntsmen and a large pack of hounds. I

clung on for dear life, loving every minute of the thrill of the open fields and the love of being on my pony. My parents often followed along in the Land Rover.

My dad particularly loved to watch the hunts. He had a favourite shooting stick, as it is known in England. This is a seat that folds out with a sharp piece that could be inserted into the ground, and he could perch on it and watch the hunt from a nearby field.

These are often seen being used by spectators at horse events, hunts and horse shows in England. My dad was very amused, as he would usually get to witness the fox outfox the hounds and all of us, and we galloped onward, hopping over bushes and logs, with some of the larger horses going over gates and large obstacles.

Fast forward to my move to the USA and the last 25 years or so that I have lived in Ocala, the Horse Capital. I have enjoyed

riding western on a beloved Tennessee Walker who lived to a fine old age with me, and more recently a Mustang that I adopted on his third and last opportunity to find a home. It was only recently that I have regularly been back in an English saddle, when I met the owners of the Perry Plantation, home to Misty Morning Hounds, a group of wonderful folks who are keeping a tradition alive and, for me, the timing could not have been any better.

Madison Starke Perry was born in Lancaster County, South Carolina, and moved to Alachua County in the mid-1800s, where he became a prosperous planter. His plantation was located about six miles east of Gainesville. Perry was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1849 and to the Florida Senate in 1850, and was then elected the fourth Governor of Florida, serving from 1857 through 1861. The Perry Plantation also served as the location for Fort Craine, the first civilian fort during the Seminole Wars. During Governor Perry’s time, the plantation was used to grow citrus and cotton, tung oil trees, and to raise cattle and some other crops. After the Civil War, the plantation’s economic activities changed, as they did across the entire South.

Today, the land is still a working farm for hay and horses, owned by the Macaulay family, and it hosts the Misty Morning Hounds, a drag-fox hunting club, and a monthly Hunter Pace.

Since my first visit to Misty Morning Hounds, I have been enamoured. On my first ride, I went out on a large Belgian Paint cross named Brewster. If you saw the Horse Capital Parade this year, Brewster led the Misty Morning Hunt group with their hounds through the streets of downtown Ocala. I have also attended and ridden Brewster in a Hunter Pace and won my first blue ribbon in a really long time.

A Hunter Pace can be flat or over jumps, and you ride in a group to achieve the optimum time that it would take if you were out on a hunt with the hounds. Even if you choose to go flat and not jump, you can still try any of the jumps on the course. All riders and breeds of horses are welcome to register and come out to participate in these activities.

For the drag hunt, there are multiple fields of riders at all levels, so if you have a young horse or are a bit “green” yourself, there is a place for you to enjoy, too. You can also become a member and save money if you would like to be a regular. If you like to ride out on trails, you should try a Hunter Pace and ride this incredibly beautiful and historic property with new friends who are so welcoming. If you go on one of these Hunter Paces or on one of the drag hunts, you will for sure want to join for the season.

As for me, after I took my first ride out there, I was hooked. It took me back to the fondest of memories with my dad and how much he loved the hunt. The only part I did

not like in England as a child was the part that the fox is involved in. Misty Morning Hounds has that covered, as this is a drag hunt and no fox is harmed. A large bag of delicious scraps is what the hounds receive as their reward at the end of the hunt.

Every year as an adult, I went to great efforts to find a totally original gift, either handmade or a one-of-a-kind fox-related item, for my dad for Christmas and birthdays. This past Thanksgiving without my dad was my first without him, as he passed away on February 13, 2025, and as I write this, we are coming up on my first Christmas without him. I still find myself looking at, and wanting to purchase, fox-related items for him.

The Macaulay family of Perry Plantation invited my loved ones and me to spend Thanksgiving in 2025 with them. The house was filled with ornamental foxes, hounds, statues, pictures on the wall, and more vintage fox items that my dad would have loved, and it was as though I could hear him enquiring about every one of them that day.

This first holiday season without my dad was not easy at all, but I can truly say that I have felt his presence and his joy that I found a place that takes me back to some great memories. Nothing takes away grief, and it is especially hard over the holidays for those of us who have lost someone we love.

I am so thankful to have found such a place to ride and enjoy new friends and feel the

J

anuary has a way of making health feel loud. Suddenly there are plans, programs, rules, and promises, all asking to be started at once. While the idea of a fresh start sounds good in theory, real life rarely changes on a deadline. A quieter approach has been gaining attention — instead of one sweeping resolution, the focus shifts to a few small habits, grown slowly over the course of a year. No overhaul. No urgency. Just space to let something take root before moving on to the next.

The idea is simple. Rather than trying to change everything in January, four habits are chosen for the year, with attention given to just one each quarter. As the seasons shift, so does the focus. The habits are not meant to be perfect or permanent. They are simply things that, if they quietly stuck, might make life feel a little better.

What those habits look like is entirely personal. They might be physical, like walking after dinner, stretching, or going to bed earlier. They might be practical, like drinking more water, cooking at home more often, or spending more time outside. They can also be mental or emotional. Reading a book. Learning something new.

Gaining a skill that has been put off. Improving in small ways is still a form of health, even when it does not look like exercise or a meal plan.

This approach removes the pressure to do everything at once. It leaves room for real life. Missed days do not cancel progress. Change often happens slowly, and quietly, when it is given time.

January does not need to be about fixing ourselves.

It can simply be a place to begin paying attention. One habit. One season. One small thing at a time.

Art and Music to Kick Off the New Year OTrak Chalk Walk

026 is finally here, and with the new year comes a full calendar of events to enjoy. January and February offer plenty of opportunities for residents to immerse themselves in local art and music.

First Friday Art Walk

In January and February, Ocala Cultural Arts will host First Friday Art Walk. The free event takes place in historic downtown Ocala on Friday, Jan. 9, and Friday, Feb. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. The walk features more than 30 artist displays, community performances and extended shopping hours.

On Saturday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., head to Tuscawilla Art Park for the third annual OTrak Chalk Walk. Attendees can walk along the OTrak to watch live chalk art drawing by professional and student artists. Winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m. The event is free, but for $5 attendees can create their own chalk drawing.

Chalk and a designated sidewalk square are provided. Enjoy food trucks and live performances by Shelby Lauren Music, Sooza, and community groups including Madison Street Academy, Community Stages and Fort King Middle School.

Goals, Kindness, and Remembering

T

his month is all about January! We will be talking about New Years, my goals for this year, Compliment Day, and International Holocaust Remembrance Day. First, let’s talk about New Years! New Years is on January 1st, and New Year’s Eve is on December 31st. On New Year’s Eve my mom and I always drink sparkling apple cider and stay up until midnight to watch the ball drop in New York on TV. We have been doing this since I was little, and I always look forward to it.

Now let’s talk about my goals for this upcoming year! One of my biggest goals is to get on my dance studio’s competition team. I have wanted this since I was ten, and I have really been working toward it.

I also want to become a stronger all-around dancer. I want to be the kind of dancer who can do everything. Another goal of mine is to excel at math. I always struggle with math, but I want to work harder and improve. These are some of my goals, and whatever your goals are, I hope you achieve them too!

Next up is Compliment Day. Compliment Day is January 24th.

It is a day to spread kindness and recognize the good in others. You can compliment someone’s personality, their outfit, or something you admire about them. You can even compliment a stranger! All you have to do to celebrate is be kind and share a little positivity.

Lastly, let’s talk about International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It is on January 27th and is a day to honor and remember the people who were harmed during the Holocaust. This day is about learning, understanding, and showing respect.

If you want to observe it, you can take a moment to learn something new about history or think about the importance of treating others with kindness, fairness, and respect.

is the season to be jolly! How lovely would it be if we could all enjoy the holiday season, attend parties and parades, gather with family around a fabulous meal, and spend time with friends celebrating?

News flash: That is not how it works for many people, particularly those struggling with seasonal affective disorder (SAD). It is a type of depression, with symptoms including sadness, low energy, sleep issues, weight gain, and loss of interest.

One of the best things we can do is reach out to friends and loved ones. Check in on them. Invite them to spend time with you at an event like a parade, a walk to view community lights, a visit to the library, or a stroll in the park. Whether they come or not, it is nice to be invited. Even after the holidays, be generous with your smile when you are in town shopping, working, or simply out and about. A smile costs nothing, and it can make a huge difference to someone suffering from SAD. This time of year, the National Alliance

on Mental Illness (NAMI) spends much time on outreach programs as we advocate awareness. We partner with Hiers-Baxley Community Partners on the Hometown Heroes event, where we recognize first responders from Marion and surrounding counties. It is an amazing event that seems to grow each year.

If you live in Ocala, you are likely familiar with our Halloween and Christmas decorating contests in the Woodfields area.

The contest is a lighthearted event where residents and visitors can drive the route to observe the decorations. There is a “fan favorite” voting opportunity, and we sincerely appreciate all the decorating efforts. This advocacy initiative hopes to spur conversations about wellness and recovery. Thank you to Leena Williams, NAMI’s shining star for advocacy.

Local NAMI continues to provide educational classes for peers and caregivers, and we encourage attendance at support

group meetings as well. Recently, we started NAMI OnCampus clubs at three local high schools, with a goal to expand to additional Marion County high schools and the local college. We are also anticipating the upcoming Navigator program for students, with more information to come. In the near future, NAMI Homefront will be a valuable addition, designed to help our local veterans.

There are many exciting programs ahead.

In the spring, NAMI will host its second annual NAMI Walk at Baseline Trailhead Park on March 28, 2026. Save the date.

Ocala Businesses Enter the Record WRITTEN BY HOPS/CITY OF OCALA

In 1891, Ocala marked two important moments in Florida’s African American business history. That year, the Metropolitan Realty and Investment Company was organized in Ocala, becoming the first African American corporation to be granted a charter by the State of Florida. Organized by Mr. Gadsden and several partners, the company began as a building and loan corporation and later expanded into real estate investment. At the time, it was a milestone for the local community.

The company’s first president was Dr. Thomas Playfair Lloyd, Ocala’s first Black physician. His leadership extended beyond medicine and into civic and economic life, and he remained in that role until his death in 1896. The formation of Metropolitan Realty was not just about opening a business. It

reflected a broader push for opportunity and recognition within Florida’s African American community.

That same year, another Black-owned business opened its doors. The Ocala Commercial and Bazar Company began operations in 1891 and is noted in historical records as the first company to be incorporated in Florida that year. Metropolitan Realty holds the distinction of being the first African American corporation to receive a state charter, while the Ocala Commercial and Bazar Company marked another step forward in Black-led enterprise.

Organized and led by Black busi-

nessmen, the company launched with a paid-up capital of $10,000 and operated out of a brick building constructed by Alfred Davis. Davis was a respected community leader who served multiple terms as an Ocala city councilman between 1874 and 1883. Day-to-day operations were managed

by Frank P. Goodson, also listed in some records as Gadson, who served as the city’s tax collector and treasurer.

Together, these two companies tell a larger story about entrepreneurship, leadership, and determination.

Founded in the same year, they reflect the early 1890s, a period when Black residents of Ocala were building businesses, investing in one another, and taking an active role in shaping the city’s future.
