1 in 5 people in Marion County live with a mental health condition
The National Alliance on Mental Illness Marion County (NAMI Marion County) is dedicated to improving the quality of life for those living with mental wellness issues and their families through support, education, and advocacy. NAMI Marion County has served the local community for over 26 years, and our goals include providing education about mental wellness, reducing stigma, and advocating for programs including research and treatment. We conduct education classes for peers and caregivers, conduct on-going support group meetings at various locations, participate in the Mental Health Court Diversion Program, Hometown Heroes and we have partnered with The Ora Clubhouse. With these programs, the organization reaches hundreds of families in need of support services. 1 in 5 Americans live with a mental health condition, and that statistic holds firm for Marion County. The chances are that you are battling a mental health condition, or you know someone who is. NAMI Marion County is a local affiliate of the national organization. We are focused on advocating and supporting not only those who may experience mental health conditions, but we also support their families. NAMI is there to provide hope and help to those in need, suffering, and feeling lost in the complex world of mental health.

career in the nonprofit sector never seemed quite in the cards for a young Toni James back in 1961. Fresh out of college and looking to put her studies in public relations to use in the more conventional corporate world, James was steered by a colleague to an open position at what was then called United Appeal, a new nonprofit organization in the area looking for a secretary for its fledgling operation. “I said ‘a charity?’ Eeww, how awful!’” James said, recalling how she wretched at the thought of working as a secretary for a company whose purpose was to give away money. “But I didn’t find any other reasonable jobs, so I took the job and they were really starting from scratch.” At the time James never could have dreamed that she would be in for the long haul, eventually growing to nearly iconic status in Ocala for her ability to muster the right people into action and inspire others to dig deep and elevate a community in so
many different ways. They were humble beginnings but laid the foundation for a career that would place her in strong company of influential people. Just James as secretary and Mary Anne Twyford as executive director accounted for the entire staff of what would later become the United Way of Marion County. “They had an office across from the new hotel downtown, and it was dirty because
I got the opportunity and the privilege to know all these people. It was just wonderful; I was having a ball!”
it had been vacated by another company,” James recalls. “All we had was a phone, two desks and a couple chairs; we didn’t have any records – all we had was a phone book.” From such meager means, Twyford and James put together an impressive board of directors which started a snowball effect for United Way. Men such as Bonnie Heath and Alex Collins were part of those early days and had a profound effect on the young James. “I got to meet everybody, the movers and shakers types,” James said. “(Heath and Collins) amassed a team of volunteers and I got the opportunity and the privilege to know all these people. It was just wonderful; I was having a ball!” The first fundraising campaign raised $80,000 for 10 different charities, referred to as member agencies. Although what may seem a paltry sum today, the $80,000 actually surpassed the campaign’s original goal by $5,000. After that one campaign, Twyford left the organization, leaving the keys to James

who knew it was time to grow up real fast. She recalls early on “locking horns” with the president of a local bank who was in charge of the committee that made the decisions on distribution of funds. “He didn’t like the way I was going about it,” James said. “I was stupid enough to argue with him. I don’t know how I got to be so brave, but I did.” That newfound bravery served her well leading the effort to galvanize the community in support of so many projects over the years. One look at a directory of local charitable organizations is a look at a myriad of projects on which James’ fingerprints can be found: a founding member of the Marion County Children’s Alliance, a Success By 6 Leadership Council member, a strong advocate for the local library and Ocala Symphony Orchestra – the list goes on and on. James’ work in bringing the Early Learning Coalition to fruition in Marion County left quite an impression on Roseanne Fricks, ELCMC Chief Executive Officer. “She brought together some movers and shakers, business leaders and said, ‘here’s what we can do, here is the potential impact it can make in this county and what are we gonna do about it and let’s explore ways to make this happen,’ and she did,” Fricks said. “She got an awesome board of directors and she brought together the right people that recognized the importance of it and accepted Toni’s dream that this could become a reality. “That was back in 1999 and today our budget is $20 million, so we’ve come a long way. I know I could pick up the phone today if the Learning Coalition had a need and say, ‘Toni, this is what I need,’ and she could do the same thing with me concerning anything with early learning.” James’ first stint as head of the local United Way was short-lived. She resigned in 1966 at the behest of her new husband who she says did not want her working. In the interim she had a son, Tom, and was content to continue volunteering for United Way while raising a family. In 1980, following James’ divorce from her husband, a professional future seemed cloudy. She had been teaching for a year but knew that would not last much longer based on her short list of credentials in that field. With a son to raise and no strong professional prospects on the horizon, James’ fu-

ture prospects were limited. On the day the court decided on her divorce decree, James received a call from Sam Mansfield asking if she wanted to return to her previous job at United Way. “It was just miraculous that they called me up to ask me if I wanted my job back,” James said. “I’ll never forget that phone call because I was up the creek without a paddle at that point.” Firmly ensconced in her previous position at United Way of Marion County, James would carry on there until retiring in 2006. Her tenure elevated the UWMC from $300,000 in fundraising in 1980 to $2.5 million in 2005 and an endowment over $1.5 million.
“She brought together some movers and shakers, business leaders and said, ‘here’s what we can do, here is the potential impact it can make in this county and what are we gonna do about it and let’s explore ways to make this happen,’ and she did.”
A single mother shepherding the local United Way and taking it to successes unimaginable just a few decades earlier, James helped elevate a community whilst providing inspiration to those who would come after. Kristina Donohue, Regional Director of the American Heart Association, says she can relate to James in that she herself is a single mother working her way in the world of non-profits. According to Donohue, James’ guidance was instrumental in her career. “The fact she would make time to connect and be genuine, it gives you that extra confidence, especially if you’re a young woman,” Donohue said. “For me, I was trying to make some leaps in my own career where I was feeling a little insecure and not quite bold
enough. Having her support and guidance and candor really helped with my confidence. “I’ve never considered myself to be a leader in textbook terms and I’ve learned in my career leadership can look different for each person. With Toni’s encouragement, it’s helped me take these steps toward leadership.” James remembers the early days when United Way was taking off to new heights. She was part of a great revival for charities as payroll deductions played a huge part in raising money. With big workplaces including the school system involved in employee payroll contributions to United Way, James would oversee an organization growing by leaps and bounds and enriching a community that needed help in many different ways. Among her fondest memories in fundraising was the “Stallion Sweepstakes,” in which horse breeders would donate stallion “seasons,” or breeding rights, to United Way in order to generate revenues. “Bonnie (Heath) came up with that idea,” James said. “Some of the stallions were so highly regarded that the stallion season went for $20,000 just for one breeding opportunity. It was amazing; at one high point it raised $150,000 one year. It was a very imaginative thing to do – I’m not sure why it wasn’t replicated in other communities.” As tax laws changed, the halcyon days of the Stallion Sweepstakes would fade, but other successes would await and 1990 would be the year of the first $1 million campaign. James remembers the campaign, “The Little Engine That Could” and Ocala Regional Hospital CEO Terry Upton’s involvement. “He would go around promoting United Way dressed as a train engineer,” James said. “He was such a good sport in all of that. It’s not very often you get these CEOs that are willing to step out of their coats and ties and do things like that, but Terry was fabulous at that.” Along the way there was the construction of a new office building in 1988 which she gives credit to local banker Gordon Skipper for spearheading the campaign to raise funds. “That was a tremendous mark of pride. He went out and raised all this money; there was no mortgage, it was all free and clear. “In the year 2000, we put an addition on and Danny Gaekwad was in charge of that fundraising campaign that doubled the size of the building. Danny’s quite the operator.”

As James speaks, she is quick to talk about other people who were instrumental in all her projects, never pointing to herself while giving credit elsewhere. But for those who have worked with her, witnessed her ethic and dedication, they know her time at United Way was invaluable to all the causes she touched. Fricks recalls James’ role in securing funding from HUD for the local Homeless Coalition. “Look at the difference it’s made now,” Fricks said. “If you think of all the lives Toni has impacted because of her ability to think outside the box, to be forward-thinking; my God, the lives and generations that have been impacted because of her willingness to this are just tremendous. “She didn’t accept the fact that there wasn’t funding or if the people were sitting around the table shaking their head instead of nodding their head – it didn’t stop her from her continuous effort to educate and advocate for something that was so desperately needed by our community.” Donohue is part of the next generation having taken the proverbial baton from James. For younger advocates such as Donohue, James is not only seen as a mentor, but an inspiration and an example of the right way to conduct fundraising coalitions. “Her experience with the United Way helped guide me in terms of my niche,” Donohue said. “You’re kind of like a club when you’re in the nonprofit world – we have a lot of similar challenges and that sort of bonds us as a group. Toni has always been able to extend herself any time I needed some direction.” Now retired, James looks back fondly at all that was accomplished during her time at United Way and elsewhere, but she still deflects to others around her. “I do feel I made an investment in the community in myself,” James said. “But I was paid to do what I did; some people don’t realize that. The people I’ve talked about were all volunteers and never got paid for what they did.” But James was herself a volunteer in many aspects, donating her time to causes outside the United Way the same as those of whom she speaks so glowingly. Her integral roles with the Ocala Symphony Orchestra, the Public Policy Institute of Marion County, the Ocala Women’s Network, the Ocala Rotary Club and the Heart of Florida

“If you think of all the lives Toni has impacted because of her ability to think outside the box, to be forward-thinking; my God, the lives and generations that have been impacted because of her willingness to this are just tremendous. Health Center just begin to scratch the surface of James’ resume when it comes to community service. In 2018 she was recognized by the Ocala Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award. She accepts these pats on the back with modesty, humility and grace shored up during a lifetime of dedication to her be-
loved community. “I came down to Florida not knowing what to expect and found a terrific home in Ocala,” James said. “I’d be sitting in my living room writing up reports, doing stuff like that after 9 o’clock at night just because I loved my job so much. “I can truly say it was not a job; I just truly loved what I did.”
