AIA Crowns First-Ever Girls Flag Football State Champions

In a historic moment for the Grand Canyon State, Arizona has witnessed the crowning of its first-ever girls flag football state champions earlier this month! The inaugural AIA (Arizona Interscholastic Association) girls flag football playoffs featured thrilling games and unforgettable moments.

In the 6A championship showdown, it was #9 Mountain View that etched their name in the history books. Playing on their home turf, the Toros secured a state championship by defeating #11 Mountain Ridge with a nail-biting final score of 10-7. The victory marked the birth of the 6A flag football state title.

The Toros' freshman quarterback, Tierah Metcalf, showcased her talent by throwing a crucial touchdown pass to sophomore Sadie Christensen during the first half. The Toros' senior standout, Tessa Christensen, sealed

the deal with a third-quarter field goal and made a pivotal interception in the game.

Meanwhile, in the 5A championship, Campo Verde emerged victorious by holding off Canyon View with a score of 14-13. The Coyotes' sophomore quarterback, Isabella Pap, connected twice with junior wide receiver Madison Coger for crucial scores. Madison Coger not only contributed on offense but also made a significant impact on defense with two interceptions and a game-saving blocked extra point attempt in the final minutes.

These championship games showcased not only the outstanding athletic talent but also the grit, determination, and sportsmanship of Arizona's young female athletes. As the first-ever girls flag football state champions, they have paved the way for future generations and made history that will be remembered for years to come.

Student Surpasses Chess Milestones

Chandler senior Sandeep Sethuraman has been playing competitive chess since he was 8 years old. Now, he’s the captain of the chess team at BASIS Chandler and is an International Master—the second-highest title awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

Sandeep became an International Master last year. Since then, he’s continued to compete in state, national, and world championships, all while coaching his fellow players at BASIS Chandler.

“The chess community at BASIS Chandler is

very tight knit, and I’ve learned so much by being a player and a coach here,” Sandeep says. “I’ve learned to never underestimate my opponents, and to always give my teammates the best possible scenarios for success.”

In August 2023, a cover story written by Sandeep was published in “Chess Life” magazine, the official magazine of the United States Chess Federation. In his article, Sandeep writes about what it means to win and lose at highly competitive national events. “Being recognized in ‘Chess Life is amazing,’” says Sandeep. “That magazine reaches over a quarter million people every month. So, to have my article published and have people read and learn from my analysis, that’s a great feeling.”

“How does ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ pest control work?”

The answer is simple, nature has been doing “organic pest control” for literally millions of years through predatory animals and insects, repellent plant life and through natural minerals and oils that bugs and other pests do not like. We use many of these methods in our service, as it is not necessary to use potentially harmful materials to take care of a problem easily solved by natural materials. Some of our products are literally food grade and could be consumed without consequence. Other products are so much safer than traditional pesticides that they are literally exempt from being registered by the EPA.

Desert Shadows Elementary Ushers in the Future of Education with the Lü Interactive System

Inan exciting leap into the future of interactive learning, PVSchool’s Desert Shadows Elementary School in Phoenix proudly becomes the only school in the greater Phoenix area to unveil the Lü Interactive System. This exclusive feature, generously gifted by the school's PTA, sets Desert Shadows apart, joining an elite trio of Arizona schools equipped with this advanced educational marvel.

The Lü System, an immersive multisensory tool, uses cuttingedge movement detection cameras to project vibrant, child-friendly visuals onto walls. This interactive approach revolutionizes the learning experience, requiring students to respond to these projections—either by playfully throwing balls or offering a highfive. As the system processes movements in real-time, students receive immediate feedback, encouraging swift physical movement, sharp cognitive responses, and collaborative teamwork.

Beyond the sheer fun, the Lü System offers a diverse range of lessons that span the school's curriculum. Students could be dancing along with a virtual dance troupe, mastering coordination, and directions. In another scenario, they might find themselves engaged in a dynamic game of 'The Wall', using Lü dodgeballs to virtually demolish a brick wall.

And while Coach Richard Shannon currently employs the system for his physical education classes, its potential extends far beyond the gym. Imagine a spelling lesson

where children physically reach out to letters, forming words. Envision math enthusiasts throwing balls to pinpoint the correct answer to arithmetic problems or young historians sailing Viking ships across a virtual sea. The Lü system's versatility accentuates Desert Shadows' commitment to STEAM, pushing boundaries in technological education.

But what do the real critics—the students—think?

"It's really fun, and you get a good workout at the same time," voice sixth graders Lucy and Jaxx. Lennon and Julia, fourthgrade enthusiasts, appreciate the interactive nature of the tool. "Everyone is cheering you on," Julia adds, emphasizing the system's unique ability to foster teamwork.

"From a P.E. perspective, getting kids that generally aren't a fan of P.E. more engaged is a win. The kids are always fully engaged, and they love it, and it's challenging," says the coach. "P.E. is everyone's favorite subject now."

Desert Shadows Elementary is located at 5902 E. Sweetwater Rd. To learn more, visit desertshadowses.pvschools.net.

SPOTLIGHT ON NATIONAL MINERS DAY

National Miners Day is a special day we celebrate to honor the brave miners who work deep underground to dig for valuable minerals like coal, gold, and diamonds. It's a day to say thank you to these amazing people who help provide us with the materials we use every day.

National Miners Day was created in 2009 to remember a tragic event in 1907 when 362 miners lost their lives in a coal mine explosion in Monongah, West Virginia. This sad event led to the creation of safer mining laws to protect miners. Now, on December 6 each year, the day is marked to remember the past, appreciate the present, and look forward to a safer future for all miners. So, let's give a big shoutout to all the miners out there who work hard to make our world a better place!

A Zest for Business: Meet 6-Year-Old

‘Kidpreneur’

Marlee Rae Cover story

ocial media and kids don’t always mix well, but TikTok is a secret ingredient inspiring one young Valley kidpreneur. Marlee Rae Cuff is well on her way to becoming a successful business owner – at the tender age of 6.

As an active social media user and influencer, Marlee’s mom, LaNea Barnes Cuff, is keenly aware of the downside of social media, but she’s also well versed in the light-hearted, inspiring content that can make the platforms so much fun.

Scrolling TikTok together, the duo came across videos of girls making lemonade. The creative editing and energy caught Marlee’s attention. She was captivated by the lively shots of mashing, mixing, and shaking.

“It was kind of exciting to see something that wasn’t a traditional TikTok dance. That’s what made her intrigued,” LaNea explains.

Together, they took a deeper dive into the young creators’ stories and learned these enterprising girls weren’t just making lemonade to sell out of their driveways; some were selling their products at markets and at parties.

One day, out of the blue, Marlee asked, “Can we make lemonade?”

LaNea recalls being intimidated, but she channeled that apprehension into action and started taking notes. As they kept watching, she began listing equipment they might need and listened for recipe ideas to

They went to a few discount stores near their home in Maricopa and cobbled together an assortment of equipment and supplies. It wasn’t exactly the professional mashers and other tools the influencers were using, but it was good enough to get their start.

“We found whatever we could, and we made some lemonade. And it was really good,” LaNea says.

They invited dad, Marcus, to sample the first batch, and like LaNea, he was surprised by just how good Marlee’s recipe tasted. Next, she made a batch to share with extended relatives at a weekly family dinner. Consensus: “That’s really, really good!”

A week later, Marlee approached LaNea in her home office and said, “I want to make lemonade for everybody.”

That was three months ago. Now, the mother-daughter team is up to their eyeballs in all of the minutiae that comes with launching a business, securing permits, and preparing to tackle Marlee’s first big business goal: selling her lemonade at local farmers’ markets.

“I shared it with family and friends, and then I made it a business to share with everyone,” Marlee explains.

So far, Marlee’s Lemonade has been sold at local parks and local community events, and Marlee got her first taste of the farmer’s market experience by participating in the Children’s Entrepreneur Market at the Fountain Hills Farmers Market.

While they work through permitting requirements to gain access to bigger markets and venues, Marlee takes her role in product development seriously. Her menu currently spans 17 different flavors, from popular fruity additions like strawberry to more exotic enhancements like lavender or matcha.

To complement the organic lemons and flavored syrups (all sourced from natural ingredients), the Cuffs are also working on making their own purees to elevate the fruity flavor profiles. Inspiration for all these flavors comes in part from her original source – TikTok – but she’s also dedicated to creating her own unique blends.

Most evenings, after her schoolwork is done, you’ll find her in the kitchen concocting what LaNea calls “mystery cups” of lemonade.

Fortunately, Marlee’s flexible school schedule allows her to dedicate plenty of time to her lemonade passion. She’s a first grader at ASU Prep Digital, an accredited online school that her pediatrician recommended back when Marlee was just a toddler. His nephew, an avid youth tennis player, was enrolled, and LaNea saw parallels in how the school could fit for their busy virtual-inclined family.

Marlee started the program as a kindergartener and continues to flourish. She attends scheduled sessions with her classmates in the morning but has the freedom to complete her assignments through the week.

That gives her the flexibility to take an active role in product development and business planning (look for tasting flights when Marlee’s Lemonade makes its official market debut!). She also joins LaNea on trips to city offices and other errands necessary for operating a small business.

In their ‘spare time,’ LaNea and Marlee also joined forces to write, illustrate, and publish a book based on Marlee’s experiences. “Marlee’s Lemonade Venture” is a refreshing tale of Marlee, an ambitious young girl with a zest for entrepreneurship; it’s sold on amazon. com and barnesandnoble.com.

Looking long term, Marlee has big plans for her brand. “In one year, I want to be in very big markets and then in five years, I want to be in stores like Target, Walmart, and Fry’s,” she says.

That may sound ambitious for a 6-year-old, but LaNea takes her role of supporting Marlee’s dreams seriously. “If she says, ‘I wanna go to the moon,’ I’m calling NASA,” LaNea says with a laugh.

To learn more about Marlee’s Lemonade, visit marleehere.com or search @marleeslemonade on social media. Families interested in exploring flexible education options for ambitious young learners can learn more at asuprepdigital. com.

Career Day

NATURE PROTECTOR

Aaron Mrotek helps preserve Arizona’s natural wonders.

Profession: Preserve Manager

Age: 34

What do you do for a living? I manage the PatagoniaSonoita Creek Preserve for The Nature Conservancy in Arizona. The preserve is known for its high diversity in bird and plant species. As part of my job, I help oversee environmental research,

maintain access for visitors, and carry out restoration projects that protect and enhance the native ecosystem that makes this location so special.

What type of training do you need to do your job?

Most people in my position go to college and received a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, botany, wildlife management, or some other natural science field of study. Some will even continue their education and receive a master’s degree. But most of all, you have a lot of experience carrying out environmental research, or have spent a lot of time working on environmental restoration projects. To be an effective environmental land manager, it is important to have a broad range of experience in many different aspects of environmentalism, because the things that you do can be very different from one day to the next.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

There are so many wonderful aspects to working as a preserve manager. I love working outside, and I’m almost always outside for some part of my day. It is a privilege to be able to work in such a beautiful place and see many types of animals, including deer, turkeys, bobcats, javelina, coatimundis, mountain lions, and more. In addition to my love of working outside, I work with a lot of amazing, interesting people. I get to meet researchers and conservation practitioners from all parts of the world, who want to help protect nature. We all have a common goal, and it is fun to work in a team of such dedicated and passionate people who want to help make the world a better place. What did you want to be when you were growing up? I wanted to be a firefighter, a doctor, the president of the United States, but most of all I wanted to be a pilot. When

I was younger, I didn’t even realize that you could make a living protecting nature. It wasn’t until I was much older that I learned about opportunities to pursue a life in the outdoors. Once I started down this path, I fell in love with it and never looked back.

What advice would you give to a kid who wants to have a similar career?

Get involved! Volunteer for an environmental project. Get out on the trails. Go camping. Learn the name of a cool bird. Go fishing. Climb to the top of the highest point in your area. Be curious and explore. See how many different types of flowers you can find. There’s a place in nature for everyone –go find what excites you.

One fun fact NOT about your job?

Humans are born with two fears: the fear of falling, and the fear of loud sounds. Every other fear is learned later after birth.

FALL FUN: Two Easy Kid-Centric Science Experiments Brain Play

Fall is the perfect season for hands-on learning, with nature displaying a spectacular array of colors and phenomena. Here are two fun and simple science experiments suitable for kids, harnessing the beauty of fall!

APPLE ERUPTIONS: THE FIZZY FUN!

Objective:

Learn about the reaction between acids and bases in a fun, fallthemed experiment.

Materials:

• A medium-sized apple

• Baking soda

• Vinegar

• A teaspoon

• A tray or dish (to contain the mess!)

Procedure:

1. Preparation: Place the apple on the tray or dish.

2. Carve a Hole: Carefully carve out a small hole at the top

of the apple. This should be wide enough to fit a teaspoon easily.

3. Baking Soda: Using the teaspoon, fill the hole in the apple with baking soda.

4. Vinegar Time: Slowly pour vinegar into the hole where you placed the baking soda.

5. Watch the Eruption: Observe the fizzy reaction that overflows from the apple!

Science Behind It: The baking soda (a base) reacts with the vinegar (an acid) to produce carbon dioxide gas, which creates the fizzy eruption. This is similar to the classic volcano science experiment, but with a fall-themed twist using an apple!

PUMPKIN OOBLECK: A NON-NEWTONIAN FALL DELIGHT!

Objective: Learn about non-Newtonian fluids by making oobleck with a fall twist.

Materials:

• 1 cup of cornstarch

• ½ cup of pumpkin puree (storebought or homemade)

• A mixing bowl

• A spoon

• Optional: Fall-themed food coloring (orange, brown, or gold) and cinnamon for added scent

Procedure:

1. Preparation: Ensure you have a clean workspace, as oobleck can get a bit messy!

2. Mixing Time: In the mixing bowl, combine the cornstarch and pumpkin puree.

3. Stir: Mix the two ingredients together until well combined. You're looking for a mixture that's hard when you tap on it but turns liquid when you let it rest.

4. Optional Add-ins: For a more festive feel, add a few drops of fall-themed food coloring and stir

well. If you want your oobleck to have a delightful scent, sprinkle in a bit of cinnamon and mix.

5. Play and Explore: Let kids touch and play with the pumpkin oobleck. They'll notice it behaves like a solid when you press it but flows like a liquid when you relax your hand.

Science Behind It: Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid, which means it doesn't follow the typical rules of liquids and solids. Its state changes based on the pressure applied, making it a fantastic substance for kids to explore and learn about unique properties of matter.

These experiments not only offer kids the chance to engage with science but also deepen their appreciation for the natural changes that come with the fall season. So, gather your materials and let the fall science fun begin!

AVERY’S PICK

"STAR DAUGHTER"

GENRE: Young Adult Fantasy

AGES: 11+

RATING: AAAAA

SYNOPSIS : If the night sky holds many secrets, it holds Sheetal Mistry's secret the closest. A secret that explains why her hair is the silver of starlight, or why some nights the stars call Sheetal by name - stars like her mother, who returned to her place in the constellation Pushya years ago. Since that day, Sheetal has been forced to hide. But as her 17th birthday draws near, the pull from the sky is growing stronger. So strong that Sheetal loses control, and a flare of starfire burns her human father—an injury only a full star's blood can heal. Sheetal has no choice but to answer the starsong and ascend to the sky. But her celestial family has summoned her for a reason: to act as their human champion in a competition to decide the next ruling house of heavens. Desperate to save her father, Sheetal agrees. But nothing could have prepared Sheetal to face the stars' dark history—or the forces that are working to shut the gate between the realms for good.

MY FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THIS BOOK IS: "What did she want? Adventures. Cupcakes and kulfi. To be star-bright and mortal-dark and make her own choices, too. To not be bound by other people’s expectations."

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS BOOK IS: The unique magic system! I’ve never read anything that incorporates both mythology and astrological inspiration so beautifully and in a way that invites exploration. I was always interested in learning more about Sheetal’s world.

MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IN THIS BOOK IS: Sheetal! Over the course of the story, she undergoes a large transformation in her personal disposition as well as how she views the world. I believe Sheetal’s story will resonate with many.
