olice have made three arrests in relation to last weekend’s house fire on Union Street in Elmira.

Emergency crews were called to the scene around 6 p.m. Sunday evening in response to the fire.

Witnesses told police they saw three males running from the area. The suspects, a 17-year-old from Waterloo and an 18-year-old and 19 yearold from Elmira, are charged with arson.

The two older males were caught in a footchase not far from the blaze, while the 17-yearold was apprehended at a home later that evening, police say.

Authorities are withholding the names of the 18 and 19-year-olds as their names could reveal the identity of the 17-year-old, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. All three are to appear in court in November.

s part of its 100th anniversary celebrations, Wilfrid Laurier University will recognize their top 100 “alumni of achievement” in a banquet next month, including Elmira’s Ken Seiling.

Seiling, a graduate of the school’s history program back in 1969 and Chair of Waterloo Region since 1985, said that to be included in that list was an unexpected honour.

“I was quite flattered, actually. It’s been 42 years since I graduated from there, but it’s nice whenever a university can recognize some of the things that you’ve done,” he said.

According to the school’s alumni page, all

members of the community were invited to submit nominations from among the university’s nearly 80,000 alumni, and after a lengthy deliberation process, 100 individuals were chosen.

Criteria for selection included leadership and purpose by being actively involved in the personal and professional community. Earlier this summer Seiling received a letter from the school’s president informing him he had been selected.

“I was kidding around and asked one of the board members who it was that nominated me, and she said there was more than one [nomination],” laughed Seiling. “I don’t know who they are, and they won’t tell me!”

Throughout his personal and professional career, Seiling has embodied the qualities of leadership and community.

He enrolled in the honours

history program in 1965 and commuted from his parents’ Elmira home to school, which allowed him to maintain a job as organist and choirmaster in St. Jacobs to help pay for school, and to continue playing hockey in his home town as well as for the school team in his final year.

Unlike his brothers, Rod, Rick and Don, he opted not to take the professional hockey route and instead decided to focus on academia.

“Hockey was an option for me, but the academic route was more appealing. At that time I was planning on going into teaching, and I was still able to play hockey on the side,” said Seiling.

“Sometimes when you’re in a family it’s better to go in a different direction.

That way there’s no comparisons,” he added with a laugh.

He completed his thesis on historical architecture in Bridgeport, which helped set the stage for his work as a history teacher from 19711974 then as museum director at the Wellington County Museum. Seiling was elected to Woolwich council

in 1976, elected mayor in 1978 and was acclaimed to the position in 1980, 1982 and 1985.

Later that December, he was elected as regional Chair at the inaugural regional council meeting, a position he has held ever since and one that puts him in an interesting position as a board member for Laurier’s down-the-street rival, the University of Waterloo.

“I’ve had a personal and social relationship with people at Laurier over the years, but an actual governance relationship with the other university,” he said.

“Just a bit of irony.”

The list of alumni also includes a wide variety of distinguished graduates from the past century, including artist Woldemar Neufeld, former UN ambassador Paul Heinbecker and opera singer Jane Archibald, among others.

The group will be recognized at the Centennial Alumni Celebration on Oct. 1 at the Bingemans Conference Centre in Kitchener.

Tickets are available for $60 per person.

Stewart Jutzi, a driver for Erb Transport in New Hamburg, won the Canadian National Professional Truck Driving Championship for the Straight Truck Class last weekend in Calgary.

Jutzi, representing Team Ontario, competed against fellow provincial champion straight truck drivers from six other teams – British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and the Maritime provinces.

Each participant completed a comprehensive written test, a practical truck inspection and the driving course competition consisting of seven challenging obstacles. Jutzi finished the day with 470 points out of a possible 500.

Team Ontario also won the Team Award at the championship. Team Ontario was represented by Jutzi (straight truck), Clary Ward from Con-way Freight (single/single), Bryon Winfield from Home Hardware Stores (single/tandem), Preetpal Nijjar from Canada Cartage Systems (tandem/tandem) and Bryan Heyworth from SLH Transport (B trains).

Careless driving charge follows three-vehicle collision T

hree vehicles were involved in a collision on Arthur Street South near St. Jacobs about 3:50 p.m. on Sept. 11.

A pickup truck, driven by a 38-year-old woman from Hawkesville, was travelling along Arthur Street heading towards Elmira when she crossed the centerline and sideswiped another pickup truck towing a camper trailer heading south. The driver of the second pickup lost control and flipped, landing in a ditch on the side of the highway, forcing a third vehicle, driven by a 26-yearold Elmira woman, off the road.

The driver and passenger of the truck and trailer, a couple in their 80s, both suffered non-lifethreatening injuries.

The female driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries and was charged with ‘careless driving.’

rea schools showed mixed results in test scores released Wednesday by the Educational Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).

The province-wide testing was administered to both the public and Catholic school boards and was delivered to Grade 3 and 6 students to assess reading, writing and math skills, while Grade 9 students were tested on math to determine how many met the provincial standards.

Here in Waterloo Region, the Catholic school system performed as well as or better than the public board across all categories, save for Grade 9 academic math where 84 per cent of public school students met the provincial standard, compared to 81 per cent of Catholic students.

Elmira District Secondary School continued its reputation for strong scores, as the school surpassed board and provincial averages for both applied and academic math by a combined 34 per cent.

The applied scores were particularly strong, with 71 per cent of students meeting the provincial requirement for applied math – compared to 42 per cent province-wide.

“On the whole I think we did quite well, specifically in the applied math courses” said Doug McKlusky, a vice-principal at EDSS who is responsible for EQAO testing at the school, adding that the math department does

a good job of preparing the students but that they also include some added incentive to the testing.

Up to 10 per cent of their final grade is tied to their performance on the EQAO math test.

“The kids know that from the very first day so they do tend to take it seriously, and they find provincially that schools who count it as part of the final evaluation the kids do better.”

The school’s performance is a slight regression from last year when 90 per cent of students met the academic curriculum standards and 76 per cent met the applied standards, but McKlusky isn’t too concerned.

“It fluctuates, but the trend over the past few years has been going up,” he said.

For Grade 3 students across the province, 65 per cent were at or above the provincial standard for reading, 73 per cent for writing, and 69 per cent for math. In Grade 6, 74 per cent met the standard for reading, 73 per cent for writing, and 58 per cent for math.

Those scores are all an increase over last year except for math, which saw a two point drop in Grade 3 and a three point drop among Grade 6s.

In the region, it’s a mixed bag of results for elementary school students, with some schools showing dramatic improvements over last years scores, and others showing sharp declines.

hile millions around the world were glued to their television sets to watch the 10th anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, Leon Kehl decided to go for a walk.

The Floradale resident organized a commemorative walk along the seven-kilometre Elmira Lions trail starting at 2 p.m. last Sunday as a solemn act of remembrance and reflection on the day. Despite the short notice, about 20 people from six different countries and four groups of faith joined in.

“I knew with the event coming up there was a lot of saturation in terms of media coverage and I felt we needed to reach out to our neighbours rather than just focusing on that coverage,” said Kehl, a father of four who moved to Floradale about eight years ago.

“If everyone who watched two hours of 9/11 coverage had taken those two hours and walked with their neighbours instead, would that have had more of an impact than sitting in front of the TV?” He was inspired by the website 9/11walks. org, which organized similar walks in 20 dif-

Candidates square off in first debate

After squabbles to open the meeting, the proceedings in St. Agatha move toward civilty James Jackson

T

he first all-candidates debate for KitchenerConestoga was a hotly contested affair, covering topics from gas prices and health care to green energy and the economy.

Nearly 200 people packed the St. Agatha Community Centre Tuesday night, but what was supposed to be an evening of debate surrounding the various party platforms quickly descended into an attack on Liberal incumbent Leeanna Pendergast, who at times had to defend herself not only from her political opponents, but from her own constituents as well.

Members of the audience, both in St. Agatha and watching online, had the opportunity to pose questions to Michael Harris of the PC party, NDP candidate Mark Cairns and Pendergast.

Green party candidate Robert Rose was not in attendance due to a family illness.

Shortly after the start of the question period, a member of the audience from Waterloo questioned

Pendergast about her inability to return his three phone calls over the past four years, stating, “You seem to have lots of time for photo ops but never return my phone calls, why not?”

The question put Pendergast on the defensive, and she responded by saying that she and her staff work hard to return every email and phone call that comes into her office and that she regretted not returning his calls, and that much of her time is spent in Toronto fighting for the residents of the riding.

“Whatever your communication difficulty was I apologize that you had any difficulty,” she responded. “We certainly make it a priority to help people.

That’s what we’re here for.”

The questions persisted as the next member of the audience, a Kitchener resident, questioned the incumbent’s accountability by reiterating Pendergast’s failure to respond to his emails and phone calls as well.

Again, Pendergast went on the defensive,

saying, “these personal attacks are what I am experiencing throughout this campaign and I’m not sure how we encourage good people to get into politics, especially women.”

NDP candidate Mark Cairns tried to refocus the questions back on the debate at hand by saying that the mudslinging was not helping them cover the issues, and that those types of personal attacks were representative of why voter turnout continued to lag.

“Can we possibly keep it civil and ask questions about policy?” he asked.

From that point on the debate maintained a civil atmosphere and managed to cover many of the issues concerning the riding, much of it focused on job creation, the environment and taxes.

On the issue of aggregate extraction, of which there are 86 active pits in the region and eight more applications before various levels of government, Pendergast reiterated an earlier statement of “putting aggregate in its place.”

She said she under-

stood the need for gravel given the rapid expansion of the region, but that gravel extraction cannot take precedence over our health and the environment.

She outlined her three-phase approach to future aggregate developments, including an extensive review of the provincial Aggregate Resources Act, the establishment of a provincial plan for the use of aggregate, and a comprehensive plan for the protection of prime farmland should she be re-elected.

“Because we all know once those farms are turned over to aggregate, they can’t be turned back,” she said.

Harris, however, challenged the Liberal candidate’s willingness to tackle the issue by saying she had not once brought up the issue in the provincial legislature in the past four years.

Jobs were another hot topic given the economic troubles that have developed since the last election. The new McGuinty $10,000 tax credit plan for recent immigrants came under fire as one arearesident compared it to

affirmative action and called it “disgusting.”

Cairns indicated that the NDP had a similar plan in their platform but that it was aimed at companies who created good jobs regardless of the employee’s skin colour or their country of origin.

Harris responded by saying that the Tim Hudak-led Conservatives would create job opportunities based on someone’s qualifications, not the amount of time they had spent in Canada.

Pendergast defended her party’s plan, saying that it was not aimed at “foreigners” but only about 1,200 people already working in Canada and that it was designed to help get those who are trained as doctors and lawyers but working as taxi drivers get out of their cabs and into their occupations of choice.

When directly ques-

tioned about the Conservative’s plan regarding Ontario’s Green Energy Act and the possible loss of thousands of jobs in that sector, the PC candidate informed the crowd that his government intended to honour all existing FIT and microFIT contracts in the province, but that they would do away with the program if voted in, calling it an “expensive energy experiment” that is driving up hydro bills for Ontarians.

“We are all for renewable energy sources, but it’s got to come down to economics and whether folks in their homes can pay for the hydro that we’re buying,” he said.

Pendergast defeated Harris in the 2007 election by a mere 1,865 votes, with Cairns finishing a distant third.

Voters can cast their ballot for this election on Oct. 6.

They are all random acts of kindness.

It’s no secret being kind to others can lift your spirits as well as theirs.

For some, kind acts are part of their everyday life, but there are some of us out there who are too busy to notice when an opportunity to

In November 2008, the KWCF started the program in hopes of building a better community and to encourage a ‘pay it forward’ philosophy. This year the movement has spread across Canada.

“Random Act of Kindness Day has been a tremendous success with folks from all different walks of life performing small, simple, kind deeds,” said Van Kalsbeek.

“It’s a reminder for us to

Michelle Krasovec, who will be spear heading the initiative in Woolwich, looks forward to spreading the word about the program.

“This gives me an opportunity to impact my community,” she said.

“It’s all about being kind to others in the community. I will be hitting the streets and approaching local businesses to create awareness about the day and will be looking for teams to help me spread the word.”

Krasovec will be approaching staff and students at Elmira District

Secondary School to help organize an event to draw attention to the day and hopes to have an appreciation night at an Elmira Sugar Kings home game.

“Some people are skeptical when someone tries to do something nice for them, waiting for a catch,” said Krasovec. “It’s a shame that we do live in a society that some people think that way but that is what the day is all about, changing that way of thinking.”

The general idea behind the day is to celebrate and perform kind acts; with a simple message of doing something nice for someone

and asking nothing in return except that they do something nice for someone else.

In the weeks leading up to Random Act of Kindness Day, volunteers will be handing out printed cards that say “You’ve been touched by a random act of kindness.” Card holders are then encouraged to hand over the card to someone else and perform simple kind acts for that person like buying them a coffee or holding open a door.

Tori Birch named Wellesley fair ambassador Colin Dewar

T

ori Birch, an 18-yearold student at the University of Guelph, has been crowned the Wellesley-North Easthope Fair ambassador.

Birch won the title Tuesday after a tight race with two other contestants, Kelsey Gardner, 19, and Ashley Guild, 17.

As part of the competition each of the contenders had individual interviews with a panel of judges the week prior to the fair.

During the fair’s opening night the contestants had to have a biographical exhibit prepared and on display in the Wellesley arena and give a speech about agriculture, the fair, or the theme of the fair: solar power.

Outgoing ambassador Justine Walker had the privilege of crowning her replacement giving her a few words of advice.

“Enjoy your time as the ambassador, the year goes by too

quickly and before you know it you’ll be standing where I am giving someone else a crown,” said Walker.

The night was bittersweet for Birch, as her grandfather, who normally attends every fall fair in Wellesley, was in hospital battling cancer.

“He means so much to me and he is the strongest guy I know,” said Birch. “One of the first things I did was call him to let him

“I knew I had done very well, but when Justine called out my

Birch is attending the University of Guelph to

study animal biology and hopes to attend the Ontario Veterinarian College after receiving her bachelor of science.

Next week she will be taking part in the Apple Butter & Cheese Festival in Wellesley and will continue to appear at other events that take place throughout the year, including a visit to the Canadian National Exhibition to represent Wellesley in the provincial competition.

Gardner, who hails from Baden, is currently attending Conestoga College studying Early Childhood Education and continues to work at Tim Hortons while volunteering at both the House of Friendship and Second Chance farm horse rescue.

New Hamburg’s Guild is entering her fifth year at Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School and hopes to become a social worker after her studies are completed.

Wellesley brushing up on its ABCs Colin Dewar

or more than 25 years the last Saturday of the month of September has seen Wellesley Apple Butter & Cheese Festival spill into the streets of the village, and this year will be no different.

Rain or shine the annual festival will take place Sept. 24, starting with the traditional pancake and sausage breakfast followed by activities for the whole family, including a horseshoe tournament, quilt auction, antique car and tractor show and the noon parade with the newlycrowned Wellesley Fall Fair ambassador in attendance.

For children the festival provides a model boat regatta, pony and stage coach rides, puppet show, a mini-tractor pull and children’s entertainer Erick Traplin will be taking to the main stage at 9:30 a.m.

The festival was

formed to promote the Village of Wellesley as well as its major businesses, the J.M. Schneider Cheese Factory and Wellesley Brand Apple Products. With the help of local service clubs, organizations and churches, several booths will be operated on the street mall with all profits going to the festival committee.

“It’s the same festival we had last year,” said Julie Robinson, one of the organizers of the event. “We have a lot of attractions to enjoy at the festival and a lot of people in town start their Christmas shopping that weekend because there are so many wonderful things to purchase at the street mall.”

The main stage will see local entertainers Kyle Geraughty, Honky Tonk Piano, clog and line dancing and the three finalists of the Wellesley Idol: Ali Carroll, 15, Greg Rola, 15 and his sister Amy, 14,

will perform at 2 p.m.

This year new to the line up will be local performers Byron Jay and Jonathan Sauder.

Other attractions at the festival will include a smorgasbord dinner of roast pork, pigtails and roast beef starting at 10:30 a.m. At the market artists will be holding demonstrations and selling their works of handmade arts and crafts.

As always homemade apple fritters and fresh apple butter and cider from the local mill will be available for those that stroll through the street mall or decide to take a tour of the cider mill.

Free tours of a goat farm, dairy and horse farm will also take place at neighbouring farms in the area.

The five kilometer run or walk which is entering its third year will start at Wellesley Public School at 10 a.m.

Admission to the festival is free, as is the parking.

Employment tops list of economic priorities

A

s every politician eventually learns, it’s about the economy, stupid.

In that light, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty is likely smiling over two new reports issued this week by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, one that shows investment in education pays large dividends and the other pressing governments to focus on reducing unemployment.

The OECD’s latest Employment Outlook says that in mid-2011 the number of unemployed people in the OECD area had declined to just over 44 million, still more than 13 million higher than immediately before the economic meltdown in 2008.

The risk of high unemployment becoming entrenched has increased with a steep rise in long-term joblessness. In the United States, the share of the unemployed who have

been out of work for more than a year has tripled to a record high of over 30 per cent. In Spain it exceeds 40 per cent. Of the major OECD economies, only in Germany has long-term unemployment fallen.

Canada has fared better than many countries, but still has issues, the report notes.

The labour market here is recovering faster than in many OECD countries. Canada’s unemployment rate has fallen to 7.5 per cent for the second quarter of 2011 from its peak of 8.5 per cent reached in the third quarter of 2009. Comparatively, the average OECD unemployment rate fell to 8.2 cent from a peak of 8.8 per cent over about the same period.

However, there is a risk that the recent faltering of the global recovery may temporarily slow the decline in unemployment in Canada back to its pre-crisis level.

In the first quarter of 2011, the unemployment rate for people aged 15 to 24 was 17.4 per cent in the OECD area, compared with seven per cent for adults aged 25 and over. Targeting youth will reduce the risk of young people falling into long-term unemployment and losing touch with the job market, the report says.

To that end, a separate report finds education is a key determinant in the success of young people.

Those with university degrees have suffered far fewer job losses during the global economic crisis than those who left school without qualifications, according to the latest edition of the OECD’s annual Education at a Glance. Good education and skills are crucial to improving a person’s economic and social prospects.

The reports reinforce the fundamental role of governments in education and job creation.

Fuzzy sea boundaries could lead to serious conflicts T

he Indian Navy revealed recently that one of its vessels, the amphibious assault ship INS Airavat, was hailed by a Chinese naval officer demanding to know why it was in Chinese territory – while it was actually off the Vietnamese coast heading for the Vietnamese port of Haiphong. And last week it was reported that a Chinese spy ship was discovered in India’s Andaman Islands earlier this year.

A quarter of a world away, in the eastern Mediterranean, the consequences of Israel’s seizure of a Turkish aid vessel heading for Gaza in May of last year continue to unfold. Israel steadfastly refuses to apologise for the deaths of nine Turks who were killed

by Israeli commandos in the attack, and on Sept. 8 Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that future aid vessels to Gaza would be escorted by the Turkish Navy.

If this sort of thing goes on, it is plausible to imagine a point at which countries with real military power – Israel and Turkey, or India and China – start shooting at each other. Moreover, all these countries except Turkey have nuclear weapons, though it is hard to imagine them being used in a conflict at sea. On the other hand, it is the sea and its slippery boundaries that make such confrontations possible.

The thing about maritime frontiers that makes them so much more dangerous than land borders is that they are often ill-defined, and almost always invisible. There are lots of disputed land frontiers in the world, but everybody knows where the actual line of control is, and there are usually troops or border police around to make sure that everybody observes it.

Even the most arrogant or paranoid governments will think long and hard before embarking on such an action, and generally they end up by deciding not to do it. Whereas at sea you can easily drift into a serious military confrontation that neither side intended.

Turkey recognized Israel in 1950, and in recent decades the two countries have been major trading partners and closely linked militarily. Only two or three years ago Israeli warplanes were still conducting military exercises in Turkey, and the latter was a major customer for Israeli weapons. But relations have cooled rapidly since Binyamin Netanyahu became prime minister of Israel, and the attack on the aid flotilla last year was the last straw.

Early this month Turkey expelled the Israeli ambassador, and Prime Minister Erdogan’s announcement that the Turkish navy will escort future aid convoys raises the prospect of actual military clashes between the two.

Erdogan cannot stand by and let any more Turkish citizens be killed, nor can he stop future convoys from seeking to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Israel’s refusal to apologize for killing Turkish citizens makes it politically impossible for him to defy Turkish public opinion on this. And yet if Turkish warships escort the next convoy, it’s easy to imagine an outbreak of shooting.

All Israel’s wars hitherto have been with poorly armed and badly led Arab armies in non-industrialized countries; a war with Turkey would be a very different matter, even if it remained a purely maritime conflict. But Israeli politics will not let Netanyahu back down either – and because it’s at sea, nobody really knows where the red lines are.

Israel attacked last year’s aid flotilla well beyond the limits of the blockade zone it had declared around Gaza, and might do so again. Israel would have local air superiority, but the Turkish warships would be on hair-trigger alert for an attack. This could end very badly.

Even that is small potatoes compared to the potential for a naval conflict in the South China Sea. China insists that virtually the whole sea is its territory, with claimed boundaries that skim the coasts of all the other countries that border the sea: Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines.

China bases its claim on its historic sovereignty over the clusters of lowlying islands in the middle of the sea, the Paracels and the Spratlys. But Hanoi says that Beijing never claimed sovereignty until 1940, and that the islands had actually been controlled

by Vietnam since the 17th century.

They were certainly under Vietnamese control until 1974, when China seized them by force, killing several Vietnamese soldiers in the process.

The Philippines also claims some of the islands, and all four Southeast Asian countries reject China’s claim to own the seabed rights practically up to their beaches. To make matters worse, there are now believed to be enormous reserves of oil and gas under the sea’s shallow waters.

Rare is the politician who looks out for your interests O

ur wellbeing so connected to the health of the U.S. economy, it’s hard not to watch with trepidation the increasingly dysfunctional political situation there.

Long corrupted by corporate interests, the convoluted system of governance has proven completely incapable of doing what’s right for average Americans, opting instead to prop up the discredited financial services industry, trickle-down-economic theory and military-industrial complex.

Despite all his early rhetoric about hope and change, President Barack Obama has been unable to muster little of the former and almost none of the latter. The status quo remains: the gap between rich and poor widens, unemployment climbs, poverty levels soar, and social services such as health care grow scarcer.

In the bought-and-sold system, there is one lone voice of reason: Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. A multi-term independent with links to the Democrats, Sanders isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.

“We have a deficit problem. It has to be addressed, but it cannot be addressed on the backs of the sick, the elderly, the poor, young people, the most vulnerable in this country,” he says of the economic squabbles in Congress. “The wealthiest people and the largest corporations in this country have got to contribute. We’ve got to talk about shared sacrifice.”

He has faced few serious challenges in all that time, typically winning handily, a clear indication the electorate supports his positions.

In the recent battle over debt ceilings and the federal budget, he continued to point out that hundreds of billions of dollars in corporate welfare have gone untouched even as Tea Party-fueled cuts to social programs hurt people and the economy.

Sanders has called for closing corporate tax loopholes and eliminating tax breaks for oil and gas companies. He also introduced legislation to impose a 5.4 per cent surtax on millionaires that would yield up to $50 billion a year. Spending cuts must be paired with new revenue so the federal budget is not balanced solely on the backs of working families, he argues.

This week, he went on the offensive over a new report showing massive jumps in the U.S. poverty rate.

A U.S. Census Bureau report released this week found that more

than 46 million Americans, about one in six, lived below the poverty line in 2010. The census report also said that about 49.9 million Americans lacked health insurance, a number that has soared by 13.3 million since 2000.

The United States has both the highest overall poverty rate and the highest childhood poverty rate of any major industrialized country on earth, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. While 21.6 per cent of American children live in poverty, the rate is 3.7 per cent in Denmark, 5.3 per cent in Finland, 6.7 per cent in Iceland, 8.3 per cent in Germany, 9.3 per cent in France.

“I suppose we can take some comfort in that our numbers are not quite as bad as Turkey (23.5 per cent); Chile (24 per cent); and Mexico (25.8 per cent),” Sanders says.

At a time of medical breakthroughs in treatments for cancer and other terrible diseases, the reality is that life expectancy for lowincome women has declined over the past 20 years in 313 counties in the United States. Those in the top 20 per cent of American incomes live, on average, at least 6.5 years longer than those in the lowest income group.

“I recite these facts because I believe that as bad as the current situation is with regard to poverty, it will likely get worse in the immediate future,” he notes. “As a result of the greed, recklessness and illegal behavior of Wall Street we are now in the midst of the worst economic

More than just pumping gas To the Editor, I noticed in last week’s issue of the Observer that there was a very nice article on the retirement of Norm Stanaitis and the changing of hands for the UPI service centre.

I would like to thank Mr. Stanaitis for his longtime commitment to the community, but most of all for the understanding heart that he had for the teenagers and young people. You employeed them. I know that there

are a lot of changes in our world – and many are great – but I do not pump gas and I do not go to a grocery store where I have to pack my own groceries. I know I am capable, but I am very thankful that there are still employers that will give a young person a job no matter how educated they are or how un-educated they are. If I start pumping my own gas or start packing my own groceries these young people would be unemployed.

We have grandchildren of our own – some that may never go to college, university or maybe never finish school. We don’t know. But, I want them to have the chance of getting a

job, being employable and possibly having the opportunity of having an employer like Mr. Stanaitis.

It is wonderful to know that the new owners are going to carry on with the great example that you have set.

So I just want to thank you, Mr. Stanaitis, for what you have brought to our community and also in believing in our young people – many of whom I have probably met – by giving them jobs.

Wishing you and your wife a very happy and healthy retirement.

Why can’t more politicians be this direct? Why aren’t more of them standing up for what benefits average citizens?

Of course, many Americans – including all those Tea Party supporters – don’t recognize the reason for their decline. Partisan reasoning has Americans believing Republicans are all about smaller government and fiscal responsibility, when just the opposite is true. Substitute Canadians and Conservatives here and you can see we’re in the same boat, albeit without some of the worst fundamentalist dogma coming out of the States.

If voters are so polarized that they can’t see the obvious – they’ve truly drunk deeply of the kool-aid – then Americans can never have a rationale debate about how to move forward.

Of course, that assumes real change is actually a possibility. Keeping the public occupied with mindless partisanship, petty bickering and, above all, pop-culture distractions works out just fine for those who are happy with the status quo: the real power elites who have no interest in changing a good thing.

As Sanders points, it’s the average person who’s footing the bill for bailing out the rich corporations.

And many of those taxpayers are oblivious to the facts, which is true on this side of the border as well.

Worst of all, the South China Sea is a maritime highway connecting Europe, the Middle East and South Asia with East Asia, and none of the other major powers is willing let it fall under exclusive Chinese control. That’s why an Indian warship was visiting Vietnam last July, and why the United States is selling more warships and helicopters to the Philippines.

It’s a slow-burning fuse, but this is the most worrisome strategic confrontation in the world today.

ood connoisseurs will be heading to Riverside Meadows Park along the banks of the Conestogo River in St. Jacobs this Sunday afternoon to sample a variety of appetizers prepared by some of Waterloo Region’s finest chefs.

The eighth annual Taste Local! Taste Fresh! event will also showcase food grown in the area by pairing 20 chefs with 20 farmers, offering the public an opportunity to sample fresh local food and farm products.

“The event showcases a large gamut of fresh products from produce to eggs and various meats,” said the event’s coordinator, Anna Contini of Foodlink Waterloo Region. “It’s all about featuring what we have in our own backyard and educating the public about it as well as making connections between farmers, chefs and consumers.”

Along with giving local farmers and chefs a platform to show off their products and skills, there are quite a few economic benefits for

those involved. For the local food producer it’s a way of making more connections with restaurants while chefs become more visible in a community, said Contini.

“It allows members of the public to see what is available locally and the fact that they can purchase the food through farm gate and various other outlets in the area helps smaller local farms,” said Contini. “It’s a marketing opportunity for both the restaurant and the farmers.”

All participating farmers are featured in Foodlink’s Buy Local! Buy Fresh! map where buying local food directly from the farmer supports the region’s economy and farming community by allowing farmers to sell directly and reap the rewards without having to pay a number of middlemen.

For the chefs and restaurants participating in the event, being able to feature local foods on their menus have become a marketable feature and a selling point to customers who want to know where their food has come from.

“Participants are able to

chat with the chefs and farmers during the event and can create a connection which may lead to that person seeking out more food from local farmers or restaurants,” said Contini.

Farmers are having difficulties in today’s economy but by putting a spotlight on local foods and educating the public about what is available in the Waterloo Region, it sets in the “consumers minds and opens their eyes to all the possible local foods,” she added.

Loel and Phyllis Penner from OK Egg Farms, located north of Elmira, are one of the 20 participating farms in

the showcase this year. The farm has been paired with Erin Helwig, the executive chef at the Stone Crock and St. Jacobs Grill.

Having participated in the annual event before, the Penners are aware of the benefits the showcase may bring.

“The event exposes local farms to the public and helps farms gain new clients as restaurants in the area find and try out your product,” said Loel.

The egg farm has managed to gain clients from the showcase while also promoting its name to the general public.

Journalists have a special role in fighting global hunger magine opening the pages of your Woolwich Observer in a country where the media was not free. You wouldn’t know if what you were reading was the truth or propaganda, because the government controlled information and didn’t let unfavourable news be reported.

Likewise, imagine if what you were reading was the propaganda that comes from well-oiled and wellfunded self-interest groups bent on setting public policy by masquerading as legitimate news and information sources.

Those are real scenarios in today’s world, and they’re making a difference in what we’re hearing, reading and seeing about the matters such as famine that’s beset the horn of Africa, as well as the global food agenda.

Governments in oppressive regimes who respond poorly to famine and hunger in their own countries don’t like criticism in the media, internally or externally. Of course, by repressing criticism, they also repress support, because the real story doesn’t get out to those who could help. Either that, or the messages that ultimately do get out are treated with skepticism because the source can’t be trusted.

A free press is key. The term citizen journalism has morphed into social media, but its emphasis is still the same – empower everyday

“Some of the least consulted groups are farmers in the creation of programs about how to feed the world,” he says. Isn’t that ironic?

For sure.

Wilkinson and University of Guelph president Alastair Summerlee appealed on separate occasions to the 260 delegates from more than 30 countries to use their power to inform readers, listeners and viewers about those in need, and to advance the understanding of what it will take to feed the hungry world.

This includes technology, which often gets criticized by those who actually have it, and try to deny it to those whom it would help.

Fighting and polarization is not the answer. Instead, more communication is needed so everyone

Manipulation draws the ire of people who’ve seen groups with self-interests working to control the public agenda for their own good.

Jack Wilkinson, former International Federation of Agricultural Producers’ president, urged those gathered in Guelph this week for the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists congress to blow the whistle when they see this happen. Manipulating press freedom is a despicable way to use a democratic right, draped in a façade of compassion for people in dire straits.

“NGOs who don’t know what they’re talking about are dictating agricultural policy,” he said. “Don’t let them get away with it.”

Wilkinson says farmers everywhere should be involved in policymaking, but are often forgotten.

Those who have the skills to tell the real story about agriculture need a stronger voice and more determination to advance conversations in the media about technology and policy that can help feed people.

As we head towards the population goalpost of nine billion people worldwide – and we know that one in six already goes to bed hungry – there’s no room for self interest. We all have to pull together on this. There’s no other way.

“For us the event is fun and promotional. It’s great to be paired with the local farms in the communities that are trying to get their products out there,” she said.

“It’s nice for the small farms to get their names out there and be noticed, they are working their little hearts out to get their product out there and it’s nice for us to be able to showcase it.”

Helwig said restaurants do benefit from the event but those located in tourist areas, like her restaurant, have a rather difficult time pinpointing the exact number that return for more after the day’s affair.

“It’s exciting to see what is out there and the event helps one find some great farms with in your local realm. We all know the big farms

and companies out there that supply restaurants with product but it is nice to actually have the local farmer come to you.”

Helwig finds using local farms products in her res restaurants pleases her customers.

“It’s great for us to say on Saturday mornings that we are using 100 per cent pure maple syrup and it was just made down the road,” she said. “The custom customers definitely appre appreciate us using local farms as there are not a lot of restaurants that have bragging rights like that.”

Taste Local! Taste Fresh! is a fundraiser for Foodlink Waterloo Region, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising the profile of our local harvest.

Last year the event sold out drawing approximately 500 guests and organizers expect this year’s event to be sold out as well.

Couple’s love for the environment made its way into St. Jacobs nuptials THE BRIDE WORE WHITE ... AND GREEN Rachel Jamieson and Andrew Bennett wanted their St. Jacobs wedding to be a reflection of their love for each other, the environment and their community.

To that end, extra steps were taken to ensure the Calgary couple’s special day would have as little impact on the Earth as possible, but would touch the lives of their families in an enormous way.

hen Rachel Jamieson and Andrew Bennett met about six years ago while working at Boundless Adventures camp north of Bancroft, it was their love for the outdoors that brought them together.

The pair enjoyed hiking, skiing, paddling and just going on road trips together, and they shared a common passion for the environment.

They’re both born-andraised Ontarians – she is from St. Jacobs and he is

from Hagersville – but their love for the outdoors drew them to Calgary about two years ago. She works as a paramedic and he works with school children who have been diagnosed with mental illness.

When the couple got engaged last July, they wanted their wedding to reflect their enthusiasm for the environment and their love for their community, so they set out to organize a wedding that would not only showcase their dedication to each other, but as a way to celebrate their friends and their fami-

lies.

Their chosen site was the millrace along the Conestogo River in Rachel’s hometown, and for her that site by the riverbank has had a very special meaning for as long as she can remember.

“I used to hang out there as a little girl. Any time I went for a walk or left the house I usually ended up down there exploring for treasure along the shores of the river, or going for picnics and trying to catch bugs,” said the 29-yearold. “We wanted to have an outdoor wedding and that felt like a really nice spot to

do it.”

They also wanted to have as little impact on the environment as they could, but admit it turned out to be trickier than they expected.

Instead of renting dishes or buying disposable ones, they decided to ask their guests to donate any unused dishes that they might have. That way the couple could save both money and the environment by avoiding needless trash.

What developed was an eclectic group of place set-

tings where each table was different than the next, but it suited the couple’s personalities perfectly. They then donated the dishes to a consignment shop so they could enjoy a new life with a new family.

“Our dishes had all different lives previous to our wedding, and now they’re continuing on in other people’s homes, which is kind of cool,” said Rachel.

Harvest time means plenty of produce for canning and preserving A

fter a recent hands-on cooking class on the art of canning and preserving, this recipe was a clear winner. Using the best of what’s available at the market right now (for instance, the blue ‘prune’ plums are difficult to find any other time of the year), and with flavours that you will love all winter long. Use this chutney with your roast turkey in place of cranberry sauce, or, even better, it goes with any type of porkschnitzel, roasted pork loin, tenderloin or chops.

If you need a quick and extremely impressive appetizer, top a log of fresh goat’s cheese with the chutney and serve with bread or crackers.

This recipe was adapted from the

for about 30 minutes; Add sugar and spices and cook a further 30 minutes over low heat, until thickened; Heat your jars in your canning pot for about 20 seconds; Remove and ladle chutney into jars, leaving 1/2-inch of headspace.

They also took solace in knowing that they would be spending the rest of their lives together, and that it was going to be a party to remember regardless of the pains along the way. The wedding went off without a hitch and all their guests had a truly memorable time.

he Elmira Sugar Kings couldn’t have asked for a better start to their season as they’ve opened with three straight wins to take the early lead in the league standings.

They beat up on Owen Sound, Listowel and Waterloo in the last week, outscoring their opponents 14-7 to start the year 3-0 for the first time since the 2007-2008 season.

The season began with a dominant 5-2 win Sept.

2 over the Greys in Owen Sound where, despite some opening night jitters from many of their rookies, coach Dean DeSilva was pleased with the team’s performance.

“We were definitely, in my opinion, the team that carried most of the play,” he said. “Not taking away from Owen Sound, they took it to us in the second period and we got an early lead and sat back on it, which was a good eye-opener for us.”

That early lead came courtesy of Will Cook, who tallied the first Kings’ goal just 2:44 into the opening period, unassisted. The Kings would score twice more before heading to the locker room, thanks to Riley Sonnenburg’s first on the powerplay from Brett Priestap and Andrew Smith at 14:39, and Brady Campbell’s first just over three minutes later, from Lukas Baleshta and Clayton Greer.

In the second, Owen Sound cut the lead to two just 90 seconds in with a goal from Mitch Wright while Baleshta was in the box for tripping.

three-goal lead with his second of the game at the 4:54 mark of the third, Wright scored shorthanded for the Greys at 8:16 and Baleshta rounded out the scoring on the powerplay at 11:23 from Cook and Justin Cooke.

The team hit the ice again

in Sunday's home-opener for an afternoon tilt against the Listowel Cyclones in a rematch of last season’s Cherrey Cup final. The game was delayed by more than 30 minutes after a pane of glass broke in the Cyclone end during warmups, and the game was further delayed by another 20 minutes for the pre-game

The long delay could have resulted in a sluggish start for both teams, but again Cook provided the fireworks early by scoring on a deflection, this one just 2:16 in from Cass Frey and Bren-

Listowel would respond at the 8:34 mark, however, on a one-on-one rush that looked harmless until David Dalby just flipped the puck at the net and squeezed it between Horrigan’s pad and the post to knot the game up at one.

The game would remain tied going into the first intermission, with Elmira holding a 16-13 edge in shots after 20 minutes.

In the second, the Kings soon put the game out of reach with three unanswered goals. Sonnenburg struck first just 2:29 in by sweeping around the Listowel net and firing the puck over the shoulder of the Cyclones keeper. Assists went to Andrew Smith and Priestap.

Sonnenburg would strike again just over five minutes later at 7:55 from Clayton Greer. Coming down the right wing the left-shooting centre cut in on the net and fired a quick shot through the legs of netminder Derek Mitchell for his second of the game and third in two nights.

Cook would score his second of the season at 10:39 from Priestap and Frey to put the Kings up 4-1.

Listowel closed the gap to 4-2 on the powerplay at 12:35 but went into the intermission down by two.

WMC pool to remain closed another week as maintenance continues James Jackson

wimmers looking to use the pool facilities at the Woolwich Memorial Centre in Elmira have been left high and dry since Sept. 5 due to ongoing maintenance, which is scheduled to last another week.

The work includes routine maintenance on the ma-

chinery and equipment in the pools filter room, as well as cleaning the tile and the deck, said the township’s recreation program manager.

“It’s going to be an annual thing, we might be able to work it down to a two-week annual shutdown, but in terms of the inspection of the tank and the mechanical equipment, we need to do that

on a regular basis because it is running 24-hours a day for the most part,” explained supervisor Dave Ruetz.

Employees from Acapulco Pools in Kitchener came in to inspect the filters, but for the most part the work is being completed by township employees, he added.

And while the three-week shutdown of the 300-square-

metre lap pool and the 75-square-metre leisure pool may seem a bit extreme to some people given the pools relatively young age, Ruetz said it is necessary because maintenance throughout the rest of the year is limited due to restricted access to equipment while the pool is in use.

“It’s typical with any large pool operation. We’ve done

this in the past at the older Elmira pool as well,” he noted. “In order to shut it off we have to shut down the pool.”

The first few weeks of September were specifically chosen by the township given the reduced demand for the pool between the summer rush and the start of fall swim-

An outdoorsman’s best friend isn’t always as illustrated Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve Galea shots to the sky that aren’t much different than what you see on the news whenever they show you armed people in the middle east celebrating something.

The difference is, sometimes a bird falls. God help me if it doesn’t, however.

That’s when Callie barks more – this time a little angrier. I’m pretty sure she’s saying, “Oh for the love of God, hand me the gun and I’ll show you how it’s done!”

We then have a heated debate which ends abruptly when I point out that she neither has her migratory bird permit and small game licence or federal firearms licence.

Then there’s silence for a few minutes.

If she’s really upset after a particularly spectacular miss, she’ll try to retrieve a decoy or two. Sometimes, they’re even mine.

Somewhere over the course of a morning hunt, however, a duck will invariably fall from the sky. That’s when the real fun starts.

Callie does not feel the need to congratulate me or even wait for my command to fetch it. Instead, she leaps into the water, savouring the experience, sort of like an inmate on death row appreciates a last meal.

And then, when I bend to pick it up, she shakes all the water off of her coat and places it down the back of my neck.

Then there’s more barking. This time, however, it’s from me.

omeone once wrote that a dog is man’s best friend. This is only because that person never owned a headstrong, half-trained retriever, like I do.

My dog, who I like very much, is not my best friend. At most, she’s a passing acquaintance – at least that’s how it seems when we’re in a duck blind. Callie simply uses the blind as a base of operations that she visits every now and then, in much the same way a flight attendant uses her apartment.

Of course, I’m exaggerating a bit.

She is actually very good at flushing grouse and retrieving ducks, but she doesn’t do it in the manner written about in most dog training manuals – she’s never read those as far as I know.

Take, for instance, the simple retrieve. The idea is for the dog to sit quiet and still and watch as the hunter lines up and shoots the bird. Then, if the manuals are to be believed, it should look at him in admiration for the nice shot he made and when, and only when, the hunter gives the signal, it should rush off to make the retrieve. And that should be a straight, there and back proposition that ends when the dog delicately sits at your feet and drops the bird in your hand once you ask for it.

Well, my dog Callie has her own version of that.

First, as the ducks are coming in, she barks quite a bit. I believe she’s saying something like, “Hey, dumbass, put down your coffee, some ducks are coming!”

his past week, 25 of the Toronto Maple Leafs top rookies converged in Oshawa for a three-game tournament against rookies from the Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Among them was Tyler Brenner, a 23-year-old Linwood native who said the rookie camp and tournament was an important step

to take in his development as a professional hockey player.

“It’s been a very high pace and a great experience, especially getting a few games in right before main camp, which is nice,” he said on Monday afternoon, the team’s lone day off during the four-day event.

Although Brenner has been in Toronto and skating with members of the Leafs NHL squad for the

Brenner was a healthy scratch in that game, as well as the team’s first matchup against Chicago, a 4-2 win Saturday, but he performed well and collected a goal and an assist in the team’s 5-1 win over Pittsburgh on Sunday while skating on the

third line with Kenny Ryan and Kyle Neuber.

The 6’2”, 200-pound forward said that he hopes his production in that game, as well as his physical style, helped turn some of the coaches’ heads and will give him some confidence heading into the main Leafs camp this weekend.

Brenner is confident that his decision to attend RIT was the right one for his development, and should serve him well in his continuing quest to make it to the NHL when camp opens Friday.

“It’s a fast-paced game in the States so when I came to the AHL it was a little tougher and guys were a little bigger, but I just continued to play the way I had been at school, and things have worked out.”

Concert to aid programs in Haiti The Wiebes to perform at FIDA fundraising dinner at Floradale Mennonite Church Steve Kannon

ong before last year’s devastating earthquake, Haiti was a country with serious problems. It’s little wonder, then, that relatively little progress has been made in the aftermath of that catastrophe.

Many of us have moved on, figuring the millions of dollars in aid that flowed in following the quake has solved the crisis.

Aid agencies like Foundation for International Development Assistance, however, know this is a long-term project. A concert and dinner later this month is the latest in a long line of fundraisers aimed helping Haitians help themselves.

Featuring music by The Wiebes, the dinner takes place Sept. 27 at Floradale Mennonite Church.

FIDA has been working in Haiti for the better part of three decades, helping to establish agricultural cooperatives as a way to fuel long-term sustainability. It’s the kind of work that requires years of effort to bear fruit, with no quick solutions, said FIDA’s Alexis Barkman “On a project, our staff might spend three years working five days a week in the community, working with farmers and their families.”

Since 1984, the organization

has helped get up and running 29 cooperatives, representing 8,000 members in 14 communities.

Problems aren’t solved overnight, as it can take more than a generation to make changes in the culture, said Barkman, the granddaughter of FIDA founders Jack and Anne Wall.

It’s that commitment that makes the concert even more compelling for The Wiebes, said Shane Wiebe “What I appreciate about the

Wall family and they’ve done with FIDA is that it’s longterm,” he said from the couple’s Stratford home, noting a long-term commitment is the key to sustainability. “It’s an honour to be associated with something so significant.”

The Wiebes are Shane and his wife Angela, who’s known the Wall family for years. She grew up in Stratford, while he’s a B.C. boy. The couple and their two young children moved back to her hometown

earlier this year after being based on the coast.

Writers and performers of contemporary gospel music, The Wiebes are right at home with church performances; they keep an extensive tour schedule of such venues.

The two have been singing together since the day they met. Their first adventure, long before they began dating, was a choir tour of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in 2000 with the Columbia Singers. The group was led

by Tony Funk, who would end up bringing the couple together again two years later.

According to the couple’s bio, Angela needed a pianist to accompany her on violin. She called Funk for the number of someone who could help her last minute, and was given Shane’s. The couple began performing regularly together, started dating in June of 2002, and were married in December 2003. The following May, Shane began his journey to a top five spot on CTV’s hit television show Canadian Idol, working with musicians like Lionel Richie, Gordon Lightfoot, and Debra Byrd.

In June of 2009, The Wiebes released their debut album, “Into Your Light,” which won

Inspirational Album of the Year at the 2010 Covenant Awards. In December 2009 The Wiebes released their Christmas record, “Christmas With You.” The album was nominated for two Covenant Awards, ended up on the Canadian “AC Top 50” charts among artists like Michael Buble and Mariah Carey.

Wiebe said he’s looking forward to the performance, eager to help the cause.

“We’re well-suited to this type of event. We always appreciate it when we can observe and be inspired by what the organizations do … to make a difference, helping others.”

Given that the couple writes songs based on their faith – “our faith is primary when it comes to our inspiration” – the work of FIDA is in keeping with their worldview.

“It’s part of our perspective that stems from our faith.”

Ariss Glen Developments Limited and Thomasfield Homes Limited Official Plan Amendment Application 4/2011, Zone Change Application 11/2011, and Draft Plan of Subdivision Application 30T-11701 Take Notice that in accordance with the Planning Act, R.S.O., 1990, as amended, the Township of Woolwich has received complete applications for the above noted Official Plan amendment and Zone Change applications for proposed Official Plan and Zoning By-law Amendments as detailed below. The Township of Woolwich will hold a Public Meeting, under Sections 17, 34 and 51 of the Planning Act, to consider the following Official Plan Amendment, Zone Change and Draft Plan of Subdivision applications. No decisions will be made at this meeting; its purpose is to provide additional information to the public and agencies and to receive comments and information from them.

Property Description The above-noted applications comprise two properties identified as follows (see Map 1):  Western property (Ariss Glen Developments) – is located on the south side of Victoria Street North, west of Greenhouse Road and north of the CN Rail line and is described as German Company Tract Part Lots 107 and 108, Plan 58R15090 Part 1. The property contains approximately 91.5 hectares and is designated Urban Area and Restricted Area in the Township’s Official Plan and is zoned General Industrial – Dry (M-1) and Open Space (O-2).  Eastern property (Thomasfield Homes Limited) – is located on the south side of Victoria Street North, east of Greenhouse Road and north of Kramp Road and is described as German Company Tract Part Lots 105 and 106.

The property contains approximately 44 hectares and is designated Urban Area and Restricted Area in the Township’s Official Plan and is zoned General Industrial – Dry (M-1).

Official Plan (Application 4/2011) The applicants are proposing an amendment to the Woolwich Official Plan: • to delete a policy which caps the total residential growth in the Breslau Settlement Area to 1, 250 units; • to amend the applicable policies and mapping to provide for a mixed use development; and • to increase the maximum gross residential density from 12 units per gross residential hectare to a minimum of 55 persons and jobs per gross residential hectare, and to increase the maximum net residential density on any site from 45 units per net residential hectare to 120 units per net residential hectare.

Zoning (Application 11/2011) The applicants are proposing an amendment to the Zoning By-law to rezone the lands from General Industrial – Dry (M-1) to the following various zoning categories:  Residential – Mixed High Density with Design Guidelines (R-5A) for the development of a single detached, semi-detached and duplex dwellings – approximately 16 hectares;  Residential / Commercial (R-6) for the development of mixed used buildings that will accommodate ground floor commercial and second floor residential uses–approximately 2 hectares;  Residential – Multiple with Design Guidelines (R-7A) for the development of townhouse units and apartments – approximately 12 hectares;  Settlement Commercial (C-3) for the development of commercial uses – approximately

In addition, site specific modifications to the following zoning categories are proposed to provide for the following:  Industrial Business Park (M-6) zone - increased height maximum to 20 metres; and  Service Commercial (C-7) zone – the addition of a hardware store as a permitted use.

Subdivision (Application 30T-11701) The proposed amendments noted above will facilitate the development of the proposed draft plan comprising of two parcels of land approximately 135.5 hectares (335 acres) in area. The draft plan proposes a mixed use development consisting of approximately 885 residential units (single detached dwellings, townhouses, apartments), 21.5 hectares of office / employment lands, 11.9 hectares of commercial lands and 2.4 hectares of institutional lands. The plan also includes lands that contain core environmental features, active and passive open space areas, storm water management facilities and a future Go Service transit station.

The proposed development will generate an estimated residential population of 2297 people and an estimated employment population of 3343 employees.

Yet we have one stupendous advantage over Tinbergen’s birds: a giant brain that can exercise understanding and self-control to override those instincts and “extricate ourselves from civilization’s gaudy traps.”

Passed away peacefully at the KW Health Centre of Grand River Hospital on Friday, September 9, 2011 in her 99th year. Marjorie Wescott (nee Christie) is the beloved wife of the late William Wescott (1977). Dear mother of Nancy Cooper and her husband Frank of Elmira, Bill Wescott and his wife Nancy Rivest of Haileybury, Midge Davenport and her husband George Divo of Scone. Loved grandmother of Scott Cooper of Elmira, Jennifer Kochut (Doug) of Waterloo, Carolyn Ensley (Henry) of Waterloo, Christine Andrews (Ron) of Burlington, Natalie Fossel (Shane) of Hanmer, Kelly Davenport of Kitchener and Mark Davenport of Port Credit, and great-grandmother of 14. She is also lovingly remembered by her sister Ruth Garrett of London and one sisterin-law Edith Wescott of Port Credit. She was predeceased by a daughter and sonin-law Dorothy and Charles Plourde, her sister and brother-in-law Jean and Tom McCormack and her parents Peter and Georgina Christie. Friends and relatives were received at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira on Sunday, September 11, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service was held on Monday, September 12, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Church, Elmira.
