lans for sweeping changes to the look of Breslau took form this week as the developer rolled out details of a mixeduse project that would bring 2,300 new residents and 3,330 jobs to the area.

Thomasfield Homes envisions a combination of residential (single-family, semis, townhouses and apartment buildings), commercial space, offices, retail stores, industrial uses, schools, open space, trails and wetlands extending over more than 335 acres east of the company’s current development, the Hopewell Heights subdivision.

The site also includes a proposed GO Transit station.

A series of Official Plan amendments and zoning changes necessary to make that happen were the topic of discussion Tuesday night at a public meeting in Woolwich council chambers.

hile the final tally of last week’s provincial election may have caught some in Kitchener-Conestoga off guard as PC candidate Michael Harris unseated incumbent Leeanna Pendergast, Barry Kay was not surprised with the result.

“The Conestoga seat was one I expected to go Conservative,” said Kay, a political science professor at Wilfrid Laurier University and expert on modeling election results.

“I expected them [the Conservatives] to pick it up, and they did.”

Harris defeated Pendergast by about 3,500 votes to win the riding – 18,005 to 14,469 – along with nearly 44 per cent of the share of voters.

NDP candidate Mark Cairns finished third with just over 7,000 votes.

On Wednesday afternoon, Kay gave a public lecture on the outcome of the election at the Kitchener Public Library’s Forest Heights Branch and provided some insight into what is likely to come with the Liberal minority government.

“I suggested that the biggest surprise of the election was not so much the totals and the seats,” said Kay over the phone after his presentation, “it was the fact that the province split in terms of its trends.”

What Kay was referring to was the deepening division between the urban and rural communities of the province and the impact that division had on the outcome of the election.

While the Conserva-

tives made strong inroads in the rural and smaller urban communities of the province – areas like KitchenerWaterloo, which was awash in a wave of blue on the morning of Oct. 7 – they failed to make a dent in the major urban centers like Toronto, Ottawa and Hamilton.

That failure was one of the primary reasons for Tim Hudak failure to unseat Premier Dalton McGuinty, according to Kay. “In the GTA the Liberals did better this time than they did last time,” said Kay referring to the fact the Liberals won 19 of 23 ridings in the 416 area code – the NDP took the remaining four. The Conservatives were completely shut-out of Toronto and took only one seat in the entire GTA. “What we saw was an even stronger trend towards the Liberals than we did in 2007, whereas the trend in rural Ontario – if I can call it that – was very much in the other direction.

“To have a shot at forming a government, they are going to have to crack into urban Ontario.”

Kay said this was the result of Hudak failing to position himself as a credible alternative to McGuinty after eight years of Liberal leadership. While voters may have grown disenchanted with the Liberal leader over the years, they just couldn’t see Hudak as a better alternative.

“We were doing projections back in the summer where the Conservatives weren’t just ahead, they were

W

hile Kelly Meissner’s two-year-old daughter Kate has spent much of the past year in the media spotlight, earlier this week it was Kelly’s turn to receive some recognition.

Meissner was named one of the women of the year in the community service category of the annual K-W Oktoberfest Rogers Women of the Year gala held at the Waterloo Inn on Tuesday night.

She was recognized for her efforts to build an all-inclusive playground for her daughter, who was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome last year, through her charity Kate’s Kause.

“It’s kind of humbling,” said Meissner, one of the eight Women of the Year in the region. “There are so many great things going on out there and when I read through the program and looked at the bios, I looked

at my husband and said ‘there is no way I have a chance.’”

The selection committee selected Meissner because of her hard work to try and raise funds for a playground in Elmira for children with disabilities. In just one year, the family has collected nearly $180,000 in cash and in-kind donations to put towards the playground.

From golf tournaments to a benefit dance and Christmas chocolate drive, the Meissners have tried just about everything to spread the word not only about Kate’s Kause, but about Angelman Syndrome in general.

The disorder affects only about one in 15,000 people, and those with AS, or “Angels” as they are sometimes called, can have little or no verbal skills, poor gross and fine motor skills, and possible seizures and sleep disorders. They do, however, have a very happy

demeanor.

In total the charity needs about $250,000 to make their dream a reality, and the cause has attracted some national and international attention.

In June they were one of 40 community projects to receive a $25,000 grant through the Keg restaurant’s 40th anniversary Thanks A Million promotion, and they also received $10,000 worth of playground equipment from Minnesota-based Landscape Structures for being runners-up in their Together We Play promotion.

They also received $50,000 in playground programming from Shanes Inspiration, a California-based playground company specializing in equipment for kids of all abilities.

“They organize programming at the park itself, so they show people how to use the park and how to interact,” said Meissner.

“I think that one of the things I worry about is what if people just think it’s a park for disabled children, but it’s not, it’s a park for everyone,” she added about the playground she wants to build in Elmira.

Now, Kate’s Kause is in the running for the Aviva Community Fund, which will donate a total of $1,000,000 to various community projects throughout the country based on the number of votes they receive. Round one of votes ends Oct. 19 and the final winners are announced in January.

“I think they’re looking for something that is already up and going, and I hope that means we have a chance because this park is going to happen,” said Meissner. “It’s not just an idea.”

jackets and boots for their children, but that is often an expensive proposition, and one that many families cannot afford.

That is why the St. Jacobs Family Support Centre has organized their first winter clothing drive next week, Oct. 17 to the 21.

“Usually we just go into thrift stores or we have rural outreach workers and they sometimes have connections through their church and we get some stuff sporadically, but quite often it’s a struggle to get enough,” said Brenda Gingerich, a family support

Despite running a substantial operating deficit, mainly due to large cost overruns at the Woolwich Memorial Centre, the township finished 2010 with a small surplus thanks to the fact it did not spend all of the budgeted funds on the capital side.

In a report to council Tuesday, director of finance Richard Petherick said a $223,565 capital surplus offset a $206,718 operating deficit to provide an overall surplus of $16,847, which will be transferred into the township’s capital budget contingency reserve fund.

Last year, the township’s water operating program generated a small surplus of $1,736, while the wastewater operation had a substantial deficit of $75,879. That latter was largely due to budgeting issues with a new cross-border agreement with Kitchener for servicing the Breslau area, Petherick explained. Only just receiving bills for the 2007-2009 period, the township had not accrued enough from previous years’ revenues to cover all the cost. The deficit was made up by drawing from the wastewater reserve fund.

> Woolwich seeks deal with Wellesley The Woolwich Fire Department is all in favour of having its Wellesley counterpart provide fire coverage in Heidelberg, but is balking at the price.

The St. Jacobs station would have a response time greater than eight minutes, while St. Clements could be there in five, making it the logical choice to look after the community, which straddles the border between the two townships.

But Wellesley is looking for $140 per year for each of the 265 properties, for a total of $37,100. That would provide just fire coverage response for one hour per call. By contrast, Woolwich supplies full coverage – including a two-station response, inspections, public education and investigations – to Mapleton and Guelph-Eramosa townships for $136 per property.

Woolwich fire chief Rick Pedersen told council this week he believes $100 per property to be a much fairer price given Wellesley’s lower level of service, adding that Wellesley is reluctant to budge given that it charges the $140 rate for similar coverage in Mapleton and Wilmot townships.

the nature trails on a beautiful fall day; imagine walking to a café or restaurant and meeting up with friends and neighbours; imagine walking to the GO station to take in a hockey game or a show in Toronto; imagine the new high tech jobs created; imagine what an exciting community this will be,” Thomasfield president Tom Krizsan said, exhorting councillors to join in his vision.

The proposal detailed by planner Bill Green of the GSP Group is for a so-called complete community, one that integrates work, home, shopping and entertainment within walking distance of each other. The presentation put some meat on the bones of a plan Krizsan first began discussing with the township more than half a dozen years ago.

As presented this week, the development would cover two pieces of land, 226 acres immediately east of the Hopewell Heights subdivision and 109 acres east of Greenhouse Road, the site of much of the proposed industrial land. There would be 865 residential units; 53 acres of employment land; 15 acres set aside at the sound end of the

western property, adjacent to the CN rail line, set aside for a GO station; and substantial amounts of protected wetlands and extensive trailways.

“This is a complete, compact, walkable community, that will also be home to Waterloo Region’s one and only suburban GO Transit station,” said Krizsan. “By the term complete, I mean a mixed-use community, one in which people can live, work, shop and play in one area; by compact, I mean that the mixed land uses are nearby and the densities represent efficient use of land, and by walkable I mean kilometres of nature trails and manmade trails, a pedestrian bridge over Hopewell Creek, and well connected street patterns giving people the opportunity to walk to work, walk to the GO station, walk to parks, cafes and restaurants and to walk to school.”

Permitting this project to go ahead would require changes to the township’s Official Plan, which currently caps the Breslau settlement area at 1,250 residential units, and to zoning in the area, which is largely designated dry industrial, manager of planning John Scarfone told councillors.

Extensive work would have to be done to provide municipal services – water and sewers – to the area, including arranging a new cross-border agreement with the City of Kitchener, which provides those services.

Nothing can be properly considered until the township completes a so-called secondary plan review, which would provide a detailed land-use plan for the entire area, not just the land involved with this project, he added.

The township is currently in the process of hiring a consultant to lead that study, with work expected to be completed by the end

of 2012 or early 2013.

As with this week’s planning meeting, the public will be part of the secondary review.

Thomasfield Homes will certainly hope that process goes as smoothly as Tuesday’s meeting: some 20 people, many of them residents of the Thomasfield subdivision, spoke in favour of the plan, welcoming the mixeduse approach.

Empire Communities, the developer of housing units in the south end of Breslau, called the project premature, arguing council should wait until the secondary plan, Waterloo Region Official Plan and new township Official Plan are completed before considering the proposal.

Familiar with the pace of development, Krizsan said in a later interview that he’s prepared to wait through the review process – he’s been calling for the secondary plan study for five years – but noted there is some urgency to getting plans in place to meet GO Transit’s plan to open a station in 2015.

Heights residents cited those issues as a reason to support the Thomasfield application.

More commonly, neighbours were encouraged by the prospect of being able to do some shopping without having to get in their cars and drive into Kitchener. The idea of a grocery store, pharmacy and restaurants, for instance, resonated with many.

The only negative comments came from a Kramp Road resident concerned about the development’s potential impact on those used to living a country lifestyle, especially the prospect of industrial uses nearby. One other delegate, representing

Woolwich to maintain snow-clearing levels Steve Kannon

W

hen Woolwich looks to cut spending in next year’s budget, a decrease in snow-clearing levels won’t be on the table.

Following a lively debate and a split vote Tuesday night, councillors opted for the status quo, fearing a reduction in service levels might make winter driving more risky.

The discussion fol-

lowed a presentation by manager of engineering Richard Sigurdson outlining possible areas for cuts. His report came in response to council’s call for all departments to find savings of five per cent across the board in preparation for setting the 2012 budget.

Sigurdson recommended no changes to plowing and sanding of rural roads, but said it would be possible to do

less clearing on secondary roads in the urban settlements, where levels of service exceed the minimum standards set by the province.

He also suggested holding a public meeting prior to making any changes.

Councillors, however, had mixed feelings about both reductions and the process.

Coun. Mark Bauman, who originally raised

the snow-clearing issue when cuts were first discussed, said he believes the service could be scaled back with no impact on safety. He cited the example of his own street in St. Jacobs, where the street was cleared four times over the course of 24 hours during a snowfall of about six inches last winter.

Noting that he travels throughout the region all winter, he said

Woolwich roads are the best plowed in the area, “but I’m wondering if that’s where we want to be.”

He was backed by Coun. Allan Poffenroth, but the three others on council were unswayed, ultimately deciding to stay the course.

Mayor Todd Cowan, for instance, said cost savings should be found elsewhere rather than taking a

chance with safety on the roads.

“Saving money is good, but not when it’s at the risk to the public.”

Added Coun. Bonnie Bryant: “We could be facing lawsuits if something happens.”

A 2-2 tie in voting was broken in favour of the status quo by Coun.

Most of the families are of low-income, and it can be difficult for them to afford appropriate clothing. In a given month the SJFSC works with anywhere from 35 to 50 families, or upwards of 200 people, and Gingerich said that for these families, the adjustment to Canadian winters is a shock.

“Those who have been here for a while they pick up pretty quickly just how cold it is, [and] in the schools the kids soon learn that they have to go out-

side and if they’re not dressed properly there will be consequences,” said Gingerich.

“Pretty quickly they catch on.”

Anyone interested in donating gently used clothing can drop them off at Woolwich Community Services in Elmira at 73 Arthur St. Monday-Friday from 9-5, or at the WCS Youth Centre at the Woolwich Memorial Centre Tuesday-Friday from 6-10 p.m.

Although minor holes can often be patched by the Mennonites, they ask that the clothes be in good condition.

rogressive Conservative Michael Harris will be heading to Queen’s Park to represent Kitchener-Conestoga.

Defeating Liberal incumbent Leeanna Pendergast in last week’s election was just part of the good news Harris would relay to his supporters at Conestoga Place Oct. 6. Harris and his fiancée, Sarah, are expecting a child early next year.

Harris won the riding with more than 43 per cent of the vote with Pendergast receiving 36 per cent. The NDP’s Mark Cairns took just over 17 per cent and The Green Party’s Rob-

ert Rose finished fourth with 2 per cent.

“We took our plan to the people of Kitchener-Conestoga to invest in health care and education, clean up government waste and provide tax relief for Ontario families and the voters in the riding choose the change,” said Harris.

This was the second time Harris ran in the riding, having lost to Pendergast in 2007 by less than 2,000 votes.

“I know what it is like to put in endless hours as a candidate and a volunteer and I thank everyone who volunteered and strengthened the democratic process,” said Harris.

“No one knows more

about the hard work and sacrifices than our families and I could not have done it with out the support of mine and enduring the political chat for years and years.”

Harris said friends and campaign volunteers helped bring the change to KitchenerConestoga, adding he hopes “the win is as gratifying for them” as it is for him.

“My goal is to represent the people of the community to the best of my abilities,” said Harris. “We have an MP (Harold Albrecht) that sets the bar high in this riding and it will be my job to give him a good run for his money – in a good way. His

NDP’s Cairns sees positives in election results Colin Dewar

T

he results of last week’s election may not have been what NDP candidate Mark Cairns, 24, was hoping for, but the IT technician and United Way volunteer was celebrating the fact he managed

to win more votes this election compared to 2007, when he first ran.

Cairns would take third place in the race for Kitchener-Conestoga, gaining 17 per cent of the vote.

“People are a lot more accepting of the NDP now, and I found that I

was able to have more open conversations going door to door this time around,” he said.

“I never felt people were pre-judging me, and the results show it. We made improvements.

We might not have won, but our numbers were up significantly from

1,116 votes – or 2.7 per cent of the total – and the Green Party failed to pick up a single seat across the province.

“I’m disappointed, of course,” he said on Wednesday afternoon, nearly a full week after the final results were tallied, adding that the fact this election saw the lowest turnout since Confederation, just 49 per cent, was equally disheartening.

Regardless of voter turnout, it would be difficult for those that did show up at the polls in Kitchener-Conestoga to recognize their Green candidate’s name. Due to a family illness, Rose

travelled to his home town of Wawa on most off-days from work.

He also had no money to spend on signs or brochures – a clear difference from the campaigns run by Pendergast and Harris.

“Money buys votes,” he said. “I couldn’t tell you the dollar amount, but I know how much signs cost and how much pamphlets cost and I know what it costs to mail all that stuff.

“I couldn’t imagine how much it cost the Conservatives per vote.

I know it cost me zero dollars to get 1,100 votes and I know theirs was a lot higher than that.”

Over the next few weeks Cairns and his team will be looking at an after election assessment to find out what worked and didn’t work over the six-week campaign.

“We are going to look

at everything piece by piece and figure out what really worked for us and amplify those things next time.”

Cairns said he believes the NDP is on the right track – he’s very optimistic about where the party is heading in

the future.

“I am very proud of my team. They worked really hard, we had a great campaign and I am looking forward to doing it again. Look out, Mr. Harris,” he advised the newly-elected Conservative MPP.

hile his political opponents were watching the final votes roll in on election night, trying to decide whether to accept victory or concede defeat, Green Party Candidate Robert Rose was where he is most Thursday nights – working.

Rose, a Red Seal chef at Langdon Hall in Cambridge, was cooking up a storm while the blue wave swept across Kitchener-Conestoga.

Rose finished a distant fourth in votes behind PC Michael Harris, Liberal Leeanna Pendergast and New Democrat Mark Cairns with just

Finally, she thanked her supporters, her campaign team, her husband Richard and their three sons, as well as her parents, Kathy and Frank Pendergast.

“At the end of the day when you get home, they’re the one’s waiting for you and they’re the one’s with you on the journey in life to-

gether,” she said of the importance of family.

Pendergast won the riding back in 2007 by pulling in 16,315 votes to Harris’ 14,450. This time, however, Harris led from the outset and cruised to victory, 18,005 votes to 14,469.

Despite the Liberal defeat in the riding, however, Premier Dalton McGuinty has won a third straight election and will continue to lead the province for

the next four years. Pendergast is confident that the party will continue to do what is best for the people of Ontario.

“My colleagues in the Liberal government will continue to do the great work that they’ve done, with advances in education and healthcare and for our seniors.

“The Liberal government is going to continue to form the government so it’s very exciting.”

Experts see no cause for concern over treatment of horses James Jackson

W

hile driving along the back roads and the main streets of Woolwich and Wellesley townships, one could be forgiven if they thought they had been transported back to the 19th century.

Horse-drawn buggies and wagons are not merely here to attract tourists or provide picturesque photo ops for politicians, they are a reality and a way of life for the Old Order Mennonites who rely on them to get around every day.

As our ancestors did before us, these Mennonites continue to use horses to pull plows out in the fields, haul loads of fresh food to market, and to bring them and their families to church on Sunday.

Recently however, the public has begun to voice their concerns about the welfare of these horses, which they allege are forced to pull heavy loads in the extreme heat of summer and the

bitter cold of winter, or are tied up for extended periods of time with limited or no access to food and water.

But despite these worries, most professionals who deal with horse care on a daily basis do not necessarily share the same concerns.

“Horses are meant to be working,” said Dr. Jamie Hobson of Eldale Veterinary Clinic in Elmira.

“They have been domesticated and bred for working, whether it’s racing, whether it’s pulling plows, or whether they’re buggy horses or they’re endurance racing horses.

“To be honest, I’ve had more situations involving non-Mennonite horse owners.”

Many horse experts will agree with this notion that a horse is in fact a working animal, in particular Standardbreds and other heavy horses that are typically seen working the fields or pulling carts and buggies through town. They say that as long as the animal is

adequately fed, watered and rested, the amount of work involved in pulling a cart or a wagon is not a burden.

Hobson said he has even been told that Mennonites will carry jugs of water with them in the back of the cart specifically so they can cool the horse down and give it a drink on hot days.

What’s more, there is a condition known as “Monday morning sickness,” also referred to as “tying up,” that afflicts some horses. If they aren’t worked enough they can develop into a potentially serious disorder in the muscles of their hind legs.

It occurs if horse owners feed their animals a full ration of grain seven days a week, but only work the horses for six days and let them rest on Sunday. Come Monday morning that extra energy built up in their legs can actually make them quite sore.

“When they hook up the horses and get them

back in the field, they have all that energy stored up in there,” said Dr. Jeff Sommer of the Wellesley Veterinary Clinic, likening it to when humans go a few days without exercise then overdo it all at once.

When horses are running down the road and look like they’re sweating a lot, this is actually a good thing...

animals. As long as they are adequately fed and housed out of the wet, a horse with its full winter coat of hair can withstand temperatures that dip into the range of minus-20 or minus-30 degree Celsius.

Likewise, as long as the animals are given access to water and breaks from work, they can easily tolerate temperatures in the 30-degree range, and that’s because horses have actually evolved to be very good at working in the heat. Unlike many other mammals, they are capable of sweating through their skin, just as humans do, only their sweat is about ten-times more concentrated than

ours.

When horses are working and sweating, this is actually a good thing because not only does that mean the horse is hydrated, but the wind passing over their body helps to cool the horse as the sweat is evaporated, pulling excess heat away from their body.

By far the most important mechanism for heat dissipation on a working horse is through the evaporation of their sweat.

Only about 25 per cent of the energy used in the horses working muscles is converted to muscle movement, with the other 75 per cent converted into waste heat.

It is when a horse actually stops running that problems can arise because that’s when that breeze moving over their bodies to cool them off stops.

Trouble can also occur if horses are forced to exert themselves on days of high heat and high humidity, because the sweat cannot evaporate as readily from their bodies.

Likewise, when a horse starts to produce a soap-like foam on its body, referred to as “lathering up”, that is neither good nor bad, as it also indicates the horse is adequately

In terms of what horses can tolerate temperature-wise, they are very adaptive

hydrated and the foam – produced by a protein appropriately enough called latherin – helps regulate body temperatures.

It could also be a byproduct of the soap in the halter lathering up as it rubs against the warm body.

“Yeah I see them sweating it up a bit as they’re pulling a buggy, but do I ever see them in trouble on the side of the road? On occasion, but that’s not necessarily a heat stress thing,” said Sommer.

“Am I overly concerned? No. I think in a lot of cases you have people and that’s not the picture they have of a horse anymore, and they are quick to make a phone call or write a letter.”

The township and local veterinarians do

not typically deal with calls regarding animal cruelty, and these calls are few and far between they say. Any calls they do receive are directed to Gary Boes, cruelty inspector for the KitchenerWaterloo Humane Society.

He says he received 677 complaints for animal cruelty in 2010, and about 98 per cent of them were for cats and dogs alone. Farmrelated calls likely make up about onehalf of one per cent of the total, he said.

In other words, they’re not a big concern for the agency.

“I’ve been here with the Humane Society since 1993 and in all that time, have I ever dealt with a horse that’s just gone over on its side because of heat

and it’s attached to a buggy? No. Because of the cold? No.” Boes also acknowledged that the treatment of horses is always on a case-bycase basis as it is with virtually any animal owner, and agreed that it was conceivable for certain owners to treat their horses with neglect or even outright abuse. If he or any other animal care specialists suspect that mistreatment has occurred, they are required by law to report it.

He also says that Mennonite farmers are very open to education and information on how to treat their horses with better care, and he has worked extensively at the St. Jacobs Market in particular, including making the

push to build barns to keep the horses out of the wind and sun.

“I make suggestions and they are open to education and to suggestions,” he said.

“Has it made a difference? Certainly in my experience it has.”

At the end of the day, experts agree that horses are meant to be worked and that they want to work. Just like a dog will chew up shoes and get all wound up if it hasn’t been taken for a run or a walk in a few days, horses also develop little idiosyncrasies such as cribbing or kicking at their stall doors if they are cooped up inside for too long.

“Unfortunately we get into the situation where more and more people think a horse should be the more slightly overweight and shined up one in a paddock all by itself,” said Sommer, “and not necessarily the horse that is out with a harness on and pulling a plow.

“In today’s day and age and culture, that’s more the exception rather than the rule.

Yes there probably are some cases where horses could use a little more to eat and a little more rest, but I wouldn’t say it’s widespread by any means.”

With minority, McGuinty has to get back to basics

T

he shift in Liberal fortunes, including the loss of KitchenerConestoga, was much smaller than anyone would have anticipated a few months ago. Dalton McGuinty has to be pleased with the results of last week’s election, despite falling just one seat short of a majority.

Clearly, despite Ontarians’ concerns with McGuinty after eight years at the helm, enough of us were more worried about the alternatives that Tim Hudak’s summertime lead in the polls dried up under the exposure of the campaign.

What we have now is some wrangling to determine just how the Legislature is going to work when it resumes sitting. Something that was previously simple, the choice of a new Speaker, becomes a game of strategy. If it’s a Liberal, the government effectively drops down to 52 seats. If either an NDP or PC candi-

date steps forward, the Liberals in effect have a majority, as the combined opposition vote would also be 53 at most.

The NDP, having picked up seven seats for a total of 17, now holds some sway, as the party is more likely to find common ground with the Liberals than are the Tories when it comes time to vote on matters of confidence.

Still, McGuinty will have to tread more lightly in his third term. He’s best advised to keep things simple, which is a fairly good bet given the province’s mounting debt load – Ontarians have no stomach for deficits and increased taxes. With that in mind, the government will have to focus on job creation and growth in the real economy, while curbing its own spending, shrinking the civil service and rolling back public sector wages.

services; if we’re going to do what’s necessary – and we have no choice – the government will have to cut a host of other programs, many of which provide little use to the bulk of Ontarians, in order to cover the costs while freezing taxes.

The key will be to choose wisely what gets cut while reversing a decades-long assault on the middleclass. Raising the fortunes of those Ontarians will have a tremendous impact on the faltering economy.

The Liberals have some good idea in that vein, though have been guilty of buying into the trickle-down arguments of the corporate lobby.

Most of the economic levers lie with the federal government, where the government is not friendly to average Canadians, but McGuinty can set the tone in the most populous province by focusing on what matters most.

Civil war and violence seem inevitable in Syria

B

ack in 1989, when the Communist regimes of Europe were tottering towards their end, almost every day somebody would say “There’s going to be a civil war.” And our job, as foreign journalists who allegedly had their finger on the pulse of events, was to say: “No, there won’t be.”

So most of us did say that, as if we actually knew. But the locals were pathetically grateful, and we turned out to be right.

It was just the same in South Africa in 1993-94. Another nonviolent revolution was taking on another dictatorship with a long record of brutality, and once again most people who had lived their lives under its rule were convinced there would be a civil war. So we foreign journalists (or at least some of us) reassured them that there wouldn’t be, and again we turned out to be right.

Now it’s Syria’s turn, and yet again most of the people who live there fear that their nonviolent revolution will end in civil war. It’s not my job to reassure them this time, because like most foreign journalists I can’t even get into the country, but in any case I would have no reassurance to offer.

This time, it may well end in civil war. Like Iraq.

The Assad dynasty in Syria is neither better nor worse than Saddam Hussein’s regime was in Iraq.

They had identical origins, as local branches of the same pan-Arab political movement, the Baath Party.

They both depended on minorities for their core support: the Syrian Baathists on the 10 per cent Alawite (Shia) minority in that country, and the Iraqi Baathists on the 20 per cent of that country’s people who were Sunni Arabs.

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER They were both ruthless in crushing threats to their monopoly of power. Hafez al-Assad’s troops killed up to 40,000 people in Hama when Sunni Islamists rebelled in Syria in 1982, Saddam Hussein’s army killed at least as many Shias in southern Iraq when they rebelled after the 1991 Gulf War, and both regimes were systematically beastly to their local Kurds.

When the American invaders destroyed Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq in 2003, however, what ensued was not peace, prosperity and democracy. It was a brutal civil war that ended with Baghdad almost entirely cleansed of its Sunni Muslim population and the whole country cleansed of its Christian minority. Only the Kurds, insulated by their own battlehardened army and their mountains, avoided the carnage.

So if the Baathist regime in Syria is driven from power, why should we believe that what follows will be any better than it was in Iraq? The country’s ethnic and sectarian divisions are just as deep and complex as Iraq’s, and although nonviolent protest continues to be the main weapon of the pro-democracy movement, there is now also violent resistance to the regime’s attacks on the population.

This is not to swallow the Baath regime’s claim that the army is protecting innocent Syrians from

terrorist “armed gangs.” The overwhelming majority of the estimated 2,900 civilians killed in the past six months were unarmed protesters killed by soldiers and secret policemen. But some Syrians – especially ex-soldiers who deserted from their units to avoid having to murder civilians – are starting to fight back with weapons.

Time is running out in Syria. The revolutionaries struggle to keep their movement inclusive and nonviolent, but people are retreating into their narrow ethnic and religious identities and resistance is turning violent.

The most vulnerable minorities, like the Christians, are starting to think about flight.

If it goes wrong in Syria, it could be almost as bad as the civil war that raged next-door in Lebanon for 15 years: massacres, refugees, devastation. What can be done to avert that outcome? Perhaps nothing short of foreign intervention on behalf of the revolutionaries can stop it now, for otherwise the regime will fight on until the country is destroyed.

Help has to come from outside, and it’s hard to imagine that happening. NATO certainly won’t take this one on: Syria has four times Libya’s population and quite serious armed forces. Non-military intervention in the form of trade embargoes and the like is unlikely to work in time, even if the rest of the world could agree on it.

There is already foreign intervention in Syria, of course, but on the wrong side. The Shia regimes in Iran and Iraq are already giving material support to the Baathist regime

Mixed-use development would bring a central public space

O

ne of the speakers addressing council at this week’s public planning meeting had it bang on: the mixed-use development proposed for Breslau is not something untested, it’s the norm in Europe. In fact, the dense mix of homes, shops, offices and other workplaces – precisely the goal of new provincial legislation – have evolved there over centuries.

Cities that began long before the automobile and which later adopted train travel that still dominates today are models for those who would see us become far less car-centric here.

That so-called complete community model is precisely what Thomasfield Homes’ Tom Krizsan is proposing for land immediately east of Breslau. There’s certainly a long way to go – the township wants to carry out a comprehensive land-use review of the area prior to making any decisions – but if there’s going to be development in Breslau, this is the way to go.

He certainly paints a compelling picture of a far more relaxed, human-scale lifestyle, even if we’re never likely to match the ambience of European communities.

And there is no point in hoping for timely concessions from President Bashar al-Assad, son of the late, great dictator: he is effectively the prisoner of the Alawite elite.

The Syrian revolutionaries are on their own. They will probably bring down the Baathists in the end, but by then the regime’s increasingly violent efforts to suppress the revolt may well have triggered the civil war that everybody fears. Another six months like the last six months, and it will be all but inevitable.

Time to move past the slots issue To the Editor, Re: Bingo finds a slot in Woolwich (Letters, Observer Oct. 8/11), it comes as no surprise to me that this letter has been voiced. For years I have not understood why you insist on publishing the quarterly gains earned in the Township of Centre Wellington by the slots and horse racing and whatever other "fundraising" they do there.

This was a topic that tore to the very heart of our Woolwich community, pitting neighbours and friends against each other and clearly has

left some people still very bitter and not able to heal and move on. I have written this letter many times only to be advised by my caring parents that I should remain silent. It grates on me tremendously, though, that this paper continues to publish these results, keeping this issue alive and at the forefront. I cannot fathom what possible positive gain there is to be had by throwing this back at the community all the time, year after year.

anchors the Euro-style plans. Trains are a fundamental part of most cities on that side of the pond. And a connection to Toronto will do far more to take cars off the road than the region’s ersatz attempt in the form of light rail transit, though the hope is that it, too, will encourage similar development along the route between two malls.

While there are no plans for local transit connecting Breslau, the GO train would provide connections to Toronto and the GTA, a draw for businesses looking to set up shop in Waterloo Region.

“We’re looking for something where people can get off the GO train and walk to their high-tech jobs. Or they can live in the neighbourhood and walk to their hightech job,” says Krizsan. “GO Transit is possibly the catalyst that’s driving this development. They (GO Transit) want to be in the center of things. They don’t want to be in the middle of some empty field.”

The region has already earmarked the Breslau area, including lands around the airport, and north Cambridge for employment lands, space being at a premium elsewhere. What happens in Breslau has significance far beyond the village itself and even Woolwich Township. But there is also one big local factor to consider: Breslau has no downtown to speak of. There’s little in the way of retail or services available. And while the new community centre has become a focal point, public spaces don’t abound.

With this development, there’s a chance to create a central shopping and entertainment area coupled to something akin to a town square, a necessity as the village grows in leaps and bounds thanks to the

thousand new homes in existing new subdivision, with more to come.

“Chances are this new community will serve as the town centre in the long run,” he says, noting residents are keen to see retail development.

“There’s no place for grocery shopping or anything.”

If this project goes ahead, we can expect to see complementary development ensue. That would include plans by Smart Centres for retail stores on some 50 acres of land north of Victoria Street, just east of Ebycrest Road. The developers of power centres such as the Walmartanchored development in St. Jacobs see great promise in the underserviced Breslau area. That land, too, will be part of the land-use study the township plans for the entire area, an attempt to come up with a comprehensive development strategy rather than dealing with applications in a piecemeal manner.

“There are a lot of things to consider for the Breslau area and the wider eastside lands,” Krizsan acknowledges. A veteran of many projects, he knows the wheels move slowly.

Still, he’s happy to see people are eager to adopt the kind of development he’s proposing. While the region currently sees much of that land as purely industrial in nature, the mixed-use proposal makes far more financial sense and is in keeping with increasingly stringent provincial regulations governing densities and live-work options.

“The public has bought into this complete community. Walk to school; walk to work; walk to shopping – everything nearby. It’s very, very attractive. All of these things make for a better lifestyle.”

fter more than 40 years in business, Dr. Gregory Mason became a household name in Elmira. The dentist earned a reputation as a good doctor and caring man in the community.

On Aug. 22, his office changed hands from Mason to Dr. Anh Le and Dr. Linda Vo, a husband and wife team who have spent the past few years working in Kitchener-Waterloo and who were looking for their own practice.

They say that Mason’s tradition of exceptional care and community-oriented dentistry will not change under their watch.

“I believe he was one of the first ever to open an office here in town and he has been providing excellent service to the community for over 40 years,” said Le. “Everyone knows who Dr. Mason is; he’s famous within the community.”

The couple first contacted Mason about acquiring the office through a private sale last March, and Mason – who was considering retirement at the time – agreed to meet with the couple to discuss the possibility of selling it.

Vo said they were humbled when he decided to transfer ownership to them.

“The first time he met us, he said this was like his baby because he built it from scratch and he wanted to find the right people to continue it on,” she said, adding that the market for established dentist practices is definitely a sellers market and that sellers can afford to be choosy on who they sell to, and the couple is honoured he chose to sell to them.

For now the couple will continue to commute from their home in Mississaugua, but they are already planning on buying a home in Waterloo Region so they can be closer to the community they serve.

They said they love the atmosphere of the small-town setting and the slower pace of the rural neighborhood.

“We’ve always been bigcity people, but we’ve never wanted to work in the big city,” said Vo. “We find the people that live in the smaller communities have a personality that we like. We like

the pace of life here.”

They have retained all of the staff, 10 employees in total, and praised Mason’s training. They wanted to keep the jobs in the community, and strive to make all staff and patients feel like part of a family.

They have a vision for the future of the practice in mind already, one that includes updated technology and equipment, and they also want to keep more of their procedures like root canals in-house, rather than referring patients to outside specialists.

Mason will even be staying on for a couple of days of work per month to treat

patients who require braces.

Vo has been a practicing dentist since 2001 when she graduated from the University of Toronto, but the profession is a relatively new one to Le. He worked for many years in the hi-tech industry before deciding to go to dental school. He graduated from the University of Montreal in 2008 and honed his skills in New York City for a couple of years after that before returning to Canada.

The couple is also excited to work together – despite some concerns from their friends and colleagues.

“They’ve been saying working with your wife can be a little bit tougher,”

laughed Le, “but so far we’ve had a very good relationship because we compliment each other.

“She loves to see children and kids and they love her, but I tend to do a little bit more complicated procedures such as root canals and extractions.”

As for daily oral care, Le said the simplest thing anyone can do to avoid seeing the dentist for more than their regular checkup is to brush twice a day and floss at least once.

Typically everyone should see a dentist once every six to nine months, with a thorough examination done every three years to examine the neck, jaw and other soft tissue, searching for cancer or other problems.

“It’s not just about teeth nowadays but general oral health because your mouth affects everything,” said Vo. The couple welcomes established customers and new ones alike to come and check out their office, located at 77 Arthur St. S. Every new client will also receive a one-on-one consultation with their dentist so they have a better understanding of the type of care they require, and to have a better idea of what their teeth and oral history is like.

“We believe that everyone has different needs. We cannot do mass dentistry,” said Le. “Different people have different needs, so we have a questionnaire and interview each other. The patient will interview the dentist and the dentist will interview the patient to see if we have a match in the treatment.”

Foodstock draws focus

T

he Woodstock-like Foodstock antidevelopment festival near Shelburne Sunday magnifies how rural Ontario has become a battleground for diverse ideologies, extreme selfinterests and total misunderstandings, many of which directly involve – or ignore – agriculture in ways it’s never known before.

Foodstock promotions draw unabashedly from 1969’s iconic Woodstock Music and Art Fair, from its name to its logo, which borrows heavily from the stylized peace dove perched on the equally stylized guitar neck.

But heading into the weekend, it’s clear that bird has flown.

On one hand, Foodstock, like Woodstock, is about people power. In Shelburne, organizers are trying to get as many as 20,000 citizens to rail against landowners determined to dig a 2,300-acre limestone quarry on prime farmland, currently planted mostly in potatoes.

For their part, the developers say they have progress on their side.

They say rock from the quarry is needed for road development. They note their initiative is consistent with the province’s mandate to make sure economic growth isn’t stifled by a shortage of raw commodities such as stone for transportation infrastructure.

Oh yes, and the developers say they’ll return the land to agriculture once they’re done with it, which might be a century from now.

Food For Thought Owen Roberts We know what’s driving them. But how about the Foodstock organizers? Back in the day, Woodstock used music and nature to promote peace and activism. Foodstock too has its share of well-intentioned musicians, including Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo.

But it seems to me it’s using agriculture to a platform for NIMBYism.

True, buses are scheduled to run from Hamilton, Toronto and Guelph, none of which are exactly in Shelburne’s backyard. But the key focus of Foodstock is the 100-plus chefs that famed chef and area restaurateur Michael Stadtlander has assembled to prepare dishes for this pay-whatyou-can event. It’s a clever promotion – the food, they say, will comprise produce from Melancthon Township, site of the proposed quarry. Each chef will prepare one item, celebrating the local bounty and, according to the organizers, “encouraging Ontarians to stand up and have their voice heard by the government.”

The government, though, already knows people don’t want quarries in their backyards.

Talent scout gives young performers some straight talk about an arts career

hat are the key ingredients to success in the arts and entertainment industry?

Desire? Passion? Dedication?

That was the question posed to a group of about 20 young dancers ranging in age from 10 to 15 years old along with their parents during a free lecture at Encore

Dance Studio on Wednesday night by renowned talent scout and Broadway producer Peter Sklar.

Sklar has discovered and coached thousands of young performers, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Mischa Barton and Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon. “Someday you may decide to move to New York or LA and decide that this is real,

not just a fantasy,� he told the students. “And you can.�

Yet the question that he posed to the dancers over and over again throughout his nearly 90-minute talk was how they can separate themselves from the rest of the dancers, actors and musicians trying to make it in Hollywood, New York City or around the world.

The right preparation just the thing for fall veggies Garlicky Kale

e get so excited about the bounty of vegetables we see at the first hint of spring. But what about

Kirstie Herbstreit & Jody O'Malley all those fantastic, hardy fall vegetables? Now is the time of year to experiment with some of those ‘root’ staples that are in abundance at the market.

We often find that some vegetables are given a bad reputation (such as brussels sprouts!) simply because they have been over-cooked, undercooked or simply not cooked well in the past. Many of the fall/winter vegetables have a touch of bitter-

“You’ll probably fail. Everybody fails.”

So how do young hopefuls stand out from the crowd and make casting directors take notice? As he told the crowd, talent and training in the industry is like air, “absolutely essential, but everyone’s got it.”

Sklar offered four insightful tips on how to truly succeed, and they are all centered on self-image and health.

“If you want to get into that three per cent and perform for a living, the good news is you can. You can do certain things to succeed.”

He was upfront with them, however, and admitted that those things would be incredibly difficult.

The first step to making it in show business, Sklar argues, is to become fully aware of who you are and to develop an acceptance for that person.

Too often actors fall into the trap of what he called the “sparkle, bubble and shine syndrome” in which those coming in for an interview put on a fake act and try to be who they think the casting director wants them to be.

The truth is, any casting director can tell who you really are the moment you step into the room, Sklar said, and will instantly see through the façade. Only by truly accepting who you are can you approach a casting director with the hope of being named for a callback.

“They hire people who are genuine, real, open, and where what you see is what you get. They’re that three per cent.”

The second factor was to maintain good personal health. He said that anyone who comes into an audition or interview that is sick will revert back to the sparkle, bubble and shine syndrome to try and cover up their illness. Moreover, directors are less likely to hire you out of concern that

you’ll infect the rest of the crew.

By eating a proper diet with plenty of green vegetables, and limiting their intake of sugar and caffeine to virtually zero, Sklar said they would have health and energy to make it in the entertainment industry.

Third, he suggested anyone looking to make it big should refrain from being in a serious relationship until the age of 25 or until they’ve tasted some success. The reason for this is because someone in a committed, serious relationship will have a safety net and be less prone to taking risks necessary to make it big, he argued.

Finally, Sklar told the students to ignore anyone who tells them they should find a more practical career to fall back on just in case they don’t make it in the entertainment industry. He compared it to when two people are preparing to jump from one rooftop to another; you can either be the person running and building up momentum, or you can be the one looking over the edge and trying to find a way down that will lessen the pain of the fall.

“They’re trying to protect you from failure,” he said. “Do not let someone talk you out of your dreams.”

The overarching theme of the talk was this: if you don’t feel good mentally and physically, you won’t open up and show the directors who you really are, and when that happens it won’t matter how good you are, how pretty you are or who you know – they’ve already lost interest.

Despite the sometimes-stark tone, those in attendance responded well to the talk, which had been in the works since July when the director of the dance club first contacted Sklar to see if he would come to Elmira.

“I thought it would be a great opportunity for the kids to get insight into the arts industry, and what’s involved,” said Chrystal Mazzotta.

“At the beginning he is realistic, and he doesn’t sugar-coat and I appreciate that. I think it’s important

ness, some of which will actually go away after the first frost. But there is always a great cooking method that will help to balance out any trace of bitterness.

The following recipes will get you thinking outside of the box in terms of side dishes. Remember, less is more when it comes to cooking green veggies – a bit of an al dente bite is nice with most veggies. And a touch of lemon with green veggies brightens their flavour and balances out any bitterness.

Wash kale; leave a little water clinging to the leaves; In a large sauté pan, heat garlic up with olive oil; Cook garlic just until it begins to sizzle, but don’t let it get brown; Add half of the kale, and stir constantly until it begins to brighten in colour and crisp a little; it will wilt slightly, then add remaining kale; Add water and cook and stir until water is evaporated; Turn off heat and stir in butter;

In a large sauté pan begin to fry bacon over medium heat; Slice brussels sprouts in half and then slice thinly; Once bacon is medium-crisp, add sprouts (remove some of the fat if there is too much); Fry over medium heat until tender-crisp; Add lemon juice, cook one minute; Finish by seasoning with salt and pepper.

In a large frying pan melt butter over medium-high heat; allow to brown lightly then sauté squash and carrot, just until tender crisp; season with salt and pepper.

Three wins. A record of 130. Your Elmira Sugar Kings certainly have the math figured out.

For fans of Junior B hockey, from last Saturday through Tuesday night, it was all Kings, all the time.

It all got started Oct. 8, as the Kings travelled down to St. Catharines to compete in the GOJHL Showcase where they were paired with the Western Conference-leading St. Mary’s Lincolns (6-2).

The first period saw both teams with some excellent chances to score but neither could capitalize.

“It was another learning experience, we found out that we are not an early morning team, we did not play well.

I will give full credit to St. Mary’s – they played a very good game,” said head coach Dean DeSilva.

The Kings broke out early in the second period with a goal from forward Scott Nagy at 1:39, but the Lincolns retaliated with two goals less than

a minute apart, capitalizing on two penalty calls against Elmira.

Forward Andrew Smith made it a 2-2 game with nine minutes remaining in the second period, but again the Kings would suffer due

to penalties. This time Patrick McKelvie was sent off the ice with a roughing call, at which point Lincolns’ defenceman Kurtis Lavis beat netminder Nick Horrigan with 37 seconds remaining in the period.

The opening minute of the third period saw Elmira captain Colton Wolfe-Sabo come out of the Kings’ zone to find Smith, who travelled down the ice and made a quick pass to Riley Sonnenburg, whose subsequent shot beat goaltender Greg Dodds, knotting the score at 3-3.

“It took us a while to adapt to their power play and once we did we were able to do a better job, but they had already scored three that way,” said DeSilva. “What it showed was the veteran presence that we have on the team, going into the third period down a goal and Sonnenburg, Wolfe-Sabo and Smith go out and score in the first minute of the third period.

We controlled the third period very well.”

The game went into overtime, with neither team potting a goal during the fouron-four action.

During the shootout the Kings managed to score twice while Horrigan shut down St. Mary’s, exciting the crowd with his confrontational style of goalkeeping. Leav-

ing the crease and skating towards the St. Mary’s players during the penalties put a certain amount of intimidation into the play, favouring Horrigan both times.

“It is just something I developed a long time ago, I had a coach that told me to come out and challenge and I tried it – I left the crease and it really has just been working for me,” said Horrigan. “I do it every penalty shot: it seems to really work out for me. It must get into the player’s head.”

Play like that undoubtedly contributed to Horrigan being named GOJHL goaltender of the month for September.

“It is a big deal, but right now I am concentrating on the games at hand. It is probably something that will set in once I am done playing and I look back at it and I know it will be a pretty cool honour,” said Horrigan.

The Kings were never in any danger during the game, scoring five of their eight goals in the first period.

Smith got the ball rolling, slipping the puck past Greys’ goalie Nicholas Caldwell, who would be pulled in the first after letting in four goals, replaced by Domingo Torrenueva.

“It is a natural thing to think that this is going to be an easy game since (the Greys) are at the bottom of the standings right now. We just reminded the guys before the game that when we get into that attitude we let teams back into the game,” said DeSilva.

The Elmira coaches were determined not to let their players become complacent with such a lead and spoke to them after each period to remind them of how they got there.

“We reminded them of the Kitchener game where we played well in the first 40

minutes and we stuck to our system and then we went on our own agenda in the third and let them back in the game. So we gave the kids some challenges tonight and some rewards for it, and for the most part they stuck to it.

It is tough in a game like that where we have such a lead, but we did not let them into the game which is what we wanted to focus on tonight,” said DeSilva.

Smith scored twice in the first period, with teammates Sonnenburg, Will Cook and Lukas Baleshta adding to the Kings’ total.

Greys forward Mitch Wright would score his team’s lone goal of the period.

The Greys came out on the attack after the intermission and potted their second of the night less than a minute into the period.

Brady Campbell and Cass Frey added to the Kings’ tally in the second, with the third period seeing one goal scored

The Kings look to make it 14-0 today (Saturday) when they welcome the 3-9 Waterloo Siskins to the WMC. With the team flying high, continuing to keep his young charges grounded is the pressing concern for DeSilva.

“No one is going to go 51-0 and right now what is tough for the kids to understand is that a coach is usually grumpy during a winning streak and they are in a better mood in a losing streak, for as bad as that sounds, I am just trying to keep them working as a team and keep their egos in check,” he explained. “It is easier to come down on kids when they are winning then it is when you are losing because you want to build up their confidence at that point.”

Jacks split a pair in weekend play

he Wellesley Applejacks lost for the first time in the young season, but a split in weekend play saw the team hold on to top spot in the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

The Jacks defeated the Delhi Travellers Oct. 7, but dropped one while visiting the Dukes in St. George the following day.

On the road against the Travellers, the Jacks claimed a 4-3 victory.

Neither team scored in

the first period, but that would change during the second as Jacks forward Corey Way potted one in the opening seconds of the period. Teammate Reid Denstedt was the hero of the day, notching a hat trick, including the game-winner, to put

Wellesley up 4-0.

The Travellers would come back with goals from Marty MacDonald and Derek Friesen to end the period down 4-2.

Delhi made a game of it in the third when Reid Morrison cashed one, but were

unable to capitalize again, giving the Jacks the win.

Preparation is key when getting in shape for duck season I

t wasn’t easy, I’ll tell you that. But I finally managed to get into the shape I needed to be in for duck hunting.

But it took some doing.

A mere two weeks ago, I was jogging three kilometres a day just to keep conditioned and reduce a bit of stress. More than that, I was eating right too. But then, duck hunting camp loomed on the horizon and I knew that – if I wanted to survive the week – I’d have to do considerably better than that. I knew I’d have to stop jogging and then resist the temptation to even mention physical fitness activities and healthy food choices.

Do either and I might find myself duct taped to the dock.

Duck hunting, you see, is not exactly the most physical hunting sport. You take boats everywhere and then sit in a blind for hours on end and drink bad coffee while waiting for ducks to come in. The

Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve Galea most physical part is putting out and bringing in the decoys but that’s not bad if you do it right either – most times you drive a boat right up to them. You’d think retrieving ducks might be a bit physical but most of us have a good dog for that.

No, the physical expectations have never really been all that high.

The guys at hunt camp have always been suspect of me anyhow. I don’t smoke or drink and I have never been excessively overweight. If they knew I jogged, they might drum me out of camp altogether.

Of course, getting in duck hunt-

ing condition is not the kind of thing you just do overnight – you need to set up a program and have the discipline to follow it.

I started conditioning myself by not jogging a full week before the hunt. And while I knew this wasn’t going to get me into the kind of shape that would force me to stop and catch my breath while canoeing, I understood that by quitting all that good physical activity I’d get closer to the mark.

Still, I had to fake quite a bit, too.

For instance, once while putting out the decoys with my uncle, I pretended to wheeze a bit. Then another time, while playing euchre in the evening after the hunt, I joined everyone else in coughing spasms. I also pretended to throw out my back reaching for a second serving of mashed potatoes.

I felt like such a phony.

No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t get into the kind of physi-

cal condition that’s expected of a true duck hunter. All that jogging had done too much damage.

Then, on the second day, at the breakfast table a strange thing happened. Instead of the usual mounds of home fries, toast, greasy eggs and bacon, someone – actually Big Ron – brought out a box of a healthy, bran-filled cereal.

It was perhaps the bravest thing I have ever seen.

“I’m getting older,” he said. “I need to watch what I eat.”

The next thing you know, more than a few of us had bowls of it and limited ourselves to one cup of coffee and a bit of juice.

After breakfast, my uncle said, “I’m going for a walk. Anyone want to join me?”

He looked straight at me.

“Sure,” I said.

“Good thing,” he replied, “I’ve never seen anyone wheeze while putting out decoys …”

Parker McIntyre of the Dukes notched another goal for his team with five minutes remaining in the period to take a 3-1 lead.

As the third period began the Jacks went full out against the Dukes, with

Unfortunately the Jacks were unable to profit during the rest of the period, with the final score favouring the Dukes 3-2.

“It was a struggle from start to finish. We didn’t play particularly well, but we didn’t play bad either.

We needed some more intensity and we had lots of chances, hitting too many goal posts,” said Fitzpatrick. “It was one of those games that if we had had a

break here or there the outcome would have been different.”

The Jacks took some bad penalties in the third period, breaking the flow of the game.

“You can’t take bad penalties at anytime but when you are really struggling as a team and you start to get something going then a penalty occurs it just zaps all the energy right away.

We have to show up and play 60 minutes of hockey and not let the other team get to us,” said Fitzpatrick.

Wellesley is tied for first

place in their division with the Hagersville Hawks and face off against the Dukes again today (Saturday).The game is their second annual breast cancer research benefit. All proceeds from program sales and donut and cider sales will be donated to breast cancer research.

There will also be a display with information about the disease and a donation box to show support in the fight against breast cancer.

The Jacks are hoping anyone attending the game will be dressed in pink to show their support for the cause.

And that’s really what Foodstock is all about. It’s an uptown version of rural Ontario’s 10-year-old “Back Off Government” campaign. In this case, though, no one really knows if they want the government to step in and stop development, or back off and stop creating legislation that promotes industrial development in rural areas.

Scratch the surface of Foodstock and you’ll be hardpressed to find involvement from the agriculture sector.

That’s too bad, because I’m sure farmers in the area care about what’s happening to the land, and agriculture should have been incorporated as a partner in Foodstock.

It would have been a natural for the Farmers Feed Cities campaign. I know it was brought to the attention of at

least one of the event’s promoters. Nothing happened.

Organizers say funds raised for this event “will be used in the fight against the proposed destruction of thousands of acres of Ontario farmland.” I think the funds will be used to fight to keep a quarry about of someone’s backyard. Foodstock would have a lot more credibility if it was clear the farmland defense was based on the threat to agriculture, rather than transplanted Torontonians’ distaste for gravel trucks clogging local highways.

They don’t want quarries and they don’t want wind turbines, just like they don’t want sluggish farm machinery on “their” roads and smelly livestock barns next door. So who controls rural Ontario? The lines are now divided even more.

Kitchener theatre has an eclectic lineup in store as it gets the 2011-2012 season underway

ittle spot. Big sounds.

As the Registry Theatre moves into its second decade, you can expect to see the kind of eclectic mix of performances that has become the hallmark of the Kitchener performance venue.

The One Night Only series, for instance, is indicative of the mix put together by director of programming Lawrence McNaught. The series opens next Friday with the premiere of Joe Sealy’s Africville Stories.

Based on the JUNO Award-winning recording Africville Suite, the musical tribute to the lost community of Africville features traditional style jazz compositions, songs and spoken word, led by Joe Sealy, the legendary Canadian jazz pianist-composer and his quartet.

Originally, author and playwright George Elliott Clarke was to do some readings, but due to a scheduling conflict the show now features Jackie Robinson,

Canada’s First Lady of gospel, blues and jazz, with new songs written especially for this performance.

“We’re very lucky to have Jackie Robinson, she’s such a wonderful singer and she’ll certainly add her own flavour to this performance,” said McNaught, noting she’ll be backed by “great Canadian jazz virtuosos” Perry White on sax, Paul Novotny on bass and drummer Daniel Barnes.

“This quartet is definitely something to focus on, and certainly a must for jazz aficionados.”

Other performances in the series include jazz pianist Gene DiNovi’s I Can Hear the Music: The Great American Songbook on Nov. 20; the Kevin Ramessar Group performing Harvest: The Music of Neil Young on Feb. 24-25, 2012; Jane Bunnett & Hilario Duran Ensemble, with the Penderecki String Quartet on Mar. 17; and the John Tank Quartet playing Apr. 20, 2012 to mark the release of a live CD recorded at a sold-out 2009 performance at the Registry.

“This is definitely an eclectic mix, which is exactly what we have in mind,” said McNaught of the series.

Also on tap next weekend is the launch of the Classics at The Registry series, opening Oct. 23 with Nota Bene Baroque. Marking 10 years, Nota Bene’s artistic director and harpsichordist Borys Medicky will lead a performance of the group’s hits from past seasons.

That will be followed up Nov. 13 by Kevin Ramessar & Friends performing Guitarra Barroca: A tour of Baroque music for the guitar, featuring local guitar great Kevin Ramessar, Larry Larson on trumpet and Graham Hargrove handling the percussion.

Perennial fan favourite Larry Larson returns later as part of the Jazz Series, which this season focuses on tributes. His own show, Larry’s Jazz Guys, will perform Hot & Cool: The Trumpets of Jazz on Mar. 9.

Woolwich mayor pushes for ban on shark fin soup Citing cruelty, overhunting of animals, Todd Cowan pushes for bylaw at regional council James Jackson

T

he Region of Waterloo may be hundreds of kilometres away from the closest ocean, but that hasn’t stopped Woolwich Mayor Todd Cowan from trying to protect one of its threatened species.

Last week, Cowan requested that Waterloo Region council establish a bylaw that would ban the possession, sale and consumption of shark fin soup and related food products in the Region of Waterloo.

Cowan said he was inspired to take this action during a school visit to Breslau last June, where a talk usually centered around civics and how the government operates quickly moved to a lesson on lobbying.

“Ms. Dunnette’s Grade 6

class had actually prepared a little lobby day for me where they were lobbying me on banning shark fin soup,” said Cowan.

The class showed Cowan the 2006 film “Sharkwater,” a documentary aimed at debunking myths surrounding sharks as ruthless killers in order to promote their conservation.

Shark fin soup is a popular dish in Chinese cuisine and typically reserved for special occasions such as weddings or banquets. It’s an expensive treat, with one bowl costing upwards of $70. Activists are concerned that most sharks have their fins removed and are simply dumped back into the water, resulting in the inhumane slaughter of millions of sharks per year.

The City of Toronto is considering a similar ban

of the delicacy, and the bylaw would set a $5,000 fine for a first offence, $25,000 for a second offence and $100,000 for a third or subsequent offence.

In his motion to council, Cowan cited that anywhere from 75 to 80 million sharks are slaughtered each year to satisfy the market for shark fin soup and other shark fin products such as medicine, and that within 10 to 15 years sharks could be extinct if their harvest is not reduced.

“Shark finning is a cruel practice that is contrary to the good morals of the residents of the Region of Waterloo,” the report said.

The motion was seconded by Coun. Jane Mitchell and referred back to staff for more information. Dr. Liana Nolan, the medical health officer for the re-

gion, is working on a final report likely to be tabled in November.

Cowan said they are working on having the soup banned on the basis of public health.

“Shark’s don’t have livers, so everything they eat they retain. They can’t get rid of mercury and other heavy metals and she [Dr. Nolan] said it builds up in their fins,” said Cowan. “She said it was a bit of a long shot but said she would look into it.”

Shark finning has been illegal in Canada since 1994, and while a bylaw outlawing the sale of consumption of shark fin soup would be the ideal result of this motion, Cowan said the township has no jurisdiction over the protection of sharks, and that it would fall upon the federal government to act.

Meetings are generally held from 1:30 to 4:00 on the third Thursday afternoon of each month at Kitchener City Hall located at 200 King Street West in Kitchener in an accessible meeting room. An American Sign Language interpreter Team attends each meeting.

While it is difficult to know just how many restaurants in the region do sell shark fin soup, Andrew Coppolino, publisher of Waterloo Region Eats and the host of “The Food Show” on AM 570, says the number is likely very low.

“I know of one place for sure that has it on their menu still in Waterloo, but I don’t know if they still have it in the back of the house,” he said. “My hunch is that it probably gets served offmenu at special times during the year.”

Cockroaches date back 350 million years, with 4,000 known species, 95% living entirely apart from humans. The other 5% seem to be universally loathed, living in filth and breeding diseases such as E. coli, salmonella, leprosy, typhoid, dysentery, plague and hookworms. When cockroaches feed, they often regurgitate and leave behind bits of their last meal; they also deposit tiny brown droppings as they go. Even worse, many people are allergic to roaches, possibly bringing on anaphylactic shock. Yet what is perhaps the most dreaded human-to-cockroach encounter?

The legendary ear infestation, says Amy Stewart in Wicked Bugs. Although it sounds like an urban legend, in fact cases of German cockroaches crawling into people’s ears and getting stuck there have been well documented.

When are cars actually “greener” than people?

When the cars are hybrid and the people are four men jogging to their destination rather than riding, says University of Milan physiologist Alberto Minetti, as reported

by Anna Kuchment in Scientific American magazine.

Minetti measured the carbon dioxide emissions of the four men when walking, running and biking compared with when riding in gasoline, diesel and hybrid cars; he found that the four joggers released 100 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre compared with about 90 grams in a hybrid car. But the carbon dioxide

output of four women jogging was less than if they rode because of their lower body mass.

“The lesson: Next time you and three male friends are late for the movies, don’t run. Hail a hybrid taxi.”

When does “saying become believing”?

This happens all too often in life. When University of Oregon psychologist Ray Hyman was in his teens, he supplemented his income by doing magic and mental shows, including palmistry, says David G. Myers in Social Psychology.

When Hyman began, he did not believe in palmistry at all but he knew that to “sell” it, he had to act as if he did. After a few years, he found himself becoming a firm believer. Then one day a professional mentalist suggested that he experiment by deliberately giving readings opposite to what the palm lines indicated.

“I tried this out with a few clients and to my surprise and horror, my

readings were just as successful as ever,” says Hyman. “Since then, I have been interested in the powerful forces that convince us, palm readers and clients alike, that something is so when it really isn’t.”

People often adapt what they say to what they think their listeners want to hear, Myers explains. They are quicker to tell people good news than bad and adjust their message accordingly. When induced to give support to something they doubt, people will often feel bad about their deceit.

“Nevertheless, they begin to believe what they are saying -- provided they weren’t bribed or coerced into doing so. When there is no compelling external explanation for one’s words, saying becomes believing.”
