Plans to expand the skate park at the Wellesley Community Centre to a multi-use sports pad drew criticism Monday night, as representatives of the Wellesley-North Easthope Agricultural Society and the Apple Butter & Cheese Festival voiced their concern to township councillors.

Speaking on behalf of the two groups, as well as the Wellesley Lions and the splash park committee, Peter Brennan told council that expanding the area beyond its original skate park use posed “inherent problems” for size and social reasons.

“It was quite shocking to see the size of the current excavation for the multi-use sports pad,” said Brennan. “It is my understanding that this plan in support of that current excavation is not the plan

WCS seeking $25K from Woolwich to boost building fund STEVE KANNON Add $25,000 to the list of grant requests to be considered by township council, as Woolwich Community Services is looking for support of its building fund. The catch-all social services agency serving Woolwich and Wellesley plans to build a new home in Elmira, and is seeking $1 million in donations to do so.

Appearing before council November 4, fundraising chair Sandy Shantz said WCS has now collected about $900,000. With the project expected to cost $1.35 million, every dollar collected past the milliondollar goal will reduce the amount of borrowing, allowing future donations to go directly into the agency’s main priorities: programs and services.

WCS has been operating from cramped quarters on Arthur Street in Elmira since 1984. With the sale of the former township hall, including the land where the agency’s building sits, the search for a new site ended up at the corner of Church Street and Memorial Avenue, a long-vacant property once home to Procast Foundries.

The new building will be much more spacious

than the 900 square feet (plus small basement) at 73 Athur St. S. At 7,500-sq. ft., the new facility will incorporate a larger reception area, private offices, a larger food bank area, a community room, public workspace, and WCS’ thrift shop, currently located in a rental space elsewhere in downtown Elmira.

Working with MennoHomes, the site will also accommodate a future three-storey residential building offering 24 apartment units for singles, seniors, and families. In addition, the property will feature substantial parking space.

WCS hopes to have the fundraising complete by Christmas, allowing construction to begin in the spring, with occupancy next fall.

WCS’ services, which impact an estimated 20 per cent of Woolwich Township annually, include clothing swaps, a backpack donation program, Christmas and Thanksgiving initiatives, employment services, a family violence prevention program, and a food bank.

Following Shantz’s presentation, councillors agreed to add the request to the upcoming deliberations over the 2014 budget.

In the same vein of the Chinese proverb and extending a love of trees to the next generation, the Township of Woolwich Environmental Enhancement Committee got local high schoolers to work on their green thumbs by contributing saplings to an Elmira tree nursery last spring. Now, TWEEC is going after a still-younger

group as they prepare to roll out their Elementary School Tree Planting Program in preparation for next year’s growing season.

“We’re hoping to fill that nursery with roughly 1,000 trees next spring through the combination of the EDSS students and the elementary program,” said TWEEC member John Mathers this week.

Elmira District Secondary School students contributed to the planting of about 3,886 trees in the township

in 2013 (a Trees for Woolwich initiative) using the school’s greenhouse to grow about 400 seedlings, an academic project that has been a great success, said teacher Barbara Gaudet, looking back on the project that will continue this winter as part of her science class.

“They enjoyed it. They found it frustrating that germination didn’t happen for all, but they enjoyed it,” she said of her students. “They liked the trees – it’s really neat to get students involved

and they always love the hands-on experience.”

The school’s efforts yielded rooted tree stock in pots, the idea being that rooted stock, trees with roots covered by a ball of soil from its pot, are easier to plant than bare root stock, trees with exposed roots that are planted directly into new soil.

Woolwich to cut cheques for market vendors relief fund in partnership with KWCF STEVE KANNON When the donations pouring into St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market relief fund start making their way to the vendors, Woolwich will be cutting the cheques. The township has signed on to a fiscal sponsor agreement with the Kitchener-Waterloo Community Foundation, which is collecting donations.

Councillors meeting Monday night agreed to the arrangement, a request from the KWCF. Some $750,000 is needed to cover uninsured losses suffered by vendors when the market’s main building burnt to the ground on Labour Day, Rosemary Smith, the non-profit group’s CEO, said in a presentation to council.

groups and individuals have been quick to help, eager to see the market back up and running as usual, she added.

David Brenneman, the township’s chief administrative officer, said the foundation needed to partner with the township to disperse the funds when the time comes.

Terms of reference for distributing relief money have been established, with dona-

tions being collected until the end of the year.

After that time, the group will look at distributing relief to vendors, covering what was not insured.

“It was discovered that insurance coverage for the vendors is widely varied.

Many have very good coverage and have indicated that they don’t need additional assistance. Others either did not have insur-

ance or were not fully covered,” said Brenneman in a written report to council.

“For some of the smaller vendors, particularly those selling handcrafted projects and baked goods, their inventory was so low that insurance simply wasn’t in place. The collective efforts of the local committee and the KWCF are now focused on helping the vendors get back on their feet as quick-

ly as possible, and all donations made will go directly to support these vendors.”

The formal agreement with KWCF allows the township to hand out the funds.

“In essence, the township serves simply as the organization that issues the cheques to the recipients once we have received proper written direction from the KWCF,” said Brenneman.

Changes in store for gravel pit process following review of Aggregate Resources Act ELENA MAYSTRUK Just a few months after West Montrose was spared a gravel pit, a report from Queen’s Park proposes changes to the province’s Aggregate Resources Act (ARA) that could alter an often unpopular process.

There might even be some common ground between farmers and the industry responsible for extracting aggregate, often from farmland.

The report from the review of the ARA, released October 31, would see comprehensive changes to public consultations processes, licensing practices,

modes of transportation, and encourage the promotion of recycled aggregates and further rehabilitation of aggregate extraction areas. Some proposed actions have already been taken to heart as the latest talks between the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) and the aggregate industry took place last week.

“We had a very good dialogue about what’s going on in recycling; there are lots of misconceptions that there’s no recycling being done and there’s no rehabilitation being done so we cleared up a lot of misconceptions,” said OFA president Mark Wales.

September marked the first-ever comprehensive discussions between OFA and the Ontario Sand, Stone and Gravel Association. Recent joint events include a presentation last week at OFA’s policy advisory council meeting by OSSGA CEO Moreen Miller, who spoke of the challenges faced by the aggregate business.

As need for both land and aggregate resources rises, it’s urgent for the industries to find way of coexisting, Wales said.

“We’re not going to preserve every acre, and there are people out there who say let’s just freeze it all and

do nothing. The reality is, then, we’re going to stop building roads and all of the things that a modern society needs we’re not going to have any longer. We can’t ignore the problem and if we don’t start talking, then 10 years from now we’ll just be at the same place.”

Prorogation of the Ontario Legislature in October 2012 significantly slowed the review, but KitchenerConestoga MPP and member of the review committee Michael Harris says the report addresses the concerns of his constituents, especially those previously involved in the long battle over a pit proposed for

West Montrose. In August, Capital Paving withdrew its bid for a gravel pit near the historic covered bridge.

Underway since March 2012, the review included public hearings in Toronto, Orangeville, Kitchener, Kanata and Sudbury and ended last week with 38 recommendations to the government.

Harris said suggestions for public consultation, including improved methods for informing local communities, and land rehabilitation are most important to residents threatened with gravel pits. He said he was happy to see recommendations on the

issue of recycling included in the report.

“Rehabilitation, that’s something I think is important, and as well the recycling aspect. I know the recycling aspect can be controversial at times because some raise questions of it happening in existing quarries or pits, but, I think it is an important step forward to ensure that if we want to limit the amount of virgin sites or virgin material that we are using, we have to use more recycled material,” Harris said this week.

The long-awaited recommendations now face a review by the Ministry of Natural Resources.

He also speculated that the disappearance of 30 parking spaces would further depress the already sluggish popularity of the Wellesley Community Centre as a rental venue.

“How attractive will it be as a rental site on nights the Applejacks are playing

and filling the arena lot?”

Brennan asked.

Brennan later cited the 1962 deed to the property, which entitled the Agricultural Society free use of the land at times mutually agreed upon between grantor (the society) and grantee (Wellesley). “I can assure you that no member of our fair board agrees that we will have free use of the land that we’ve donated to the town of Wellesley

if this multi-use sports pad goes forward in the present location.”

Bob Reid, representing the ABC Festival, praised the success of the splash park, and warned councillors, “You’re just destroying that beautiful corner with what you’ve got proposed.”

He added, “We do need facilities for the young. …

We need to give something for these kids to do. But I think we’ve got to take a

step back and make sure we’re doing the right thing.”

It was also noted that basketball hoops are available at Wellesley Public School, and Brennan quipped that Canadian children don’t need to look far for a site to play ball hockey.

Brennan stressed that a motion to reconsider the decision should come after consultation with staff and stakeholders. “I can tell you that members of the

groups I’m representing will dedicate time to assist staff in developing options,” he said.

Township staff hope to address concerns, and take suggestions, at an open house on November 27, 7-8:30 p.m. at the Wellesley Community Centre. The event will give staff opportunity to explain the history and rationale behind the location.

“We’d like the public and

community groups to come and ask questions and give ideas,” said facilities director Brad Voisin. “This is yours. It’s not staff’s, it’s not council’s – it’s the community’s.”

Council also directed township staff to set up a meeting with the stakeholder after the open house to come to a mutually acceptable recommendation, to be voted on at a later date.

Woolwich Township approved the club’s proposal in the spring, and the goal is to cater the Breslau community to the needs of the increased population of young families in the area.

4:00 PM | A driver suffered minor injuries after attempting to pull out from a parking space and being struck by a vehicle travelling northbound on King Street near Albert Street in St. Jacobs. The driver of the first vehicle was charged with ‘start from stopped position not in safety.’

5:15 PM | A two-car collision occurred in the roundabout at Arthur Street and Sawmill Road when a driver on the inside lane drifted out of the lane and struck the vehicle beside it. The first driver was charged with ‘fail to drive in marked lane.’ There were no injuries.

8:36 PM | Severe damage to two vehicles occurred when an empty utility trailer, towed by a Ford pickup eastbound on Line 86 in Wallenstein, detached from the hitch sleeve and the safety chain and collided with a westbound Lexus. The pickup’s driver was charged with having improper means of attachment for the trailer.

“We’re looking for any teachers willing to tie it into programming for all ages. It would be really well suited for Grades 1 to 3,” said Mathers.

While high school students will continue to plant the fussier tree varieties with small seeds, the younger kids will be charged with growing burl and red oak trees from acorns using honey-combed seed cell trays provided by TWEEC and EDSS. The township will also provide the acorns and planting materials, with students tending to the

seedlings from mid-February until mid-May when TWEEC will collect them for planting in the tree nursery in the industrial district near Union Street.

Mathers said he hopes the experience will be an education in environmentalism for both younger and older students, though it will be up to the teachers how they want to tie the project in with their curriculum.

“You could have the discussion with the older children about global warming and climate change and the importance of trees. You can tie it in with the older grades quite easily, so I’m really hoping that we can get a whole lot of participation with all ages.”

Classrooms participating in the Trees for Woolwich initiative will be finalized in the next few weeks.

Woolwich finances ahead of budget Through the first three quarters of the year, Woolwich has 34.65 per cent of the net levy from its budget remaining, with 25 per cent of the year to go, township councillors heard this week.

In a presentation Monday night, director of finance Richard Petherick provided a fiscal update through September 30. Although the budget is tracking well, he said, there are some issues, including the fact the winter control budget for 2013 has all been spent, leaving the township hoping for a very mild November and December lest the budget go into deficit.

Also running over budget are sidewalk snow-clearing efforts in Elmira, the result of a new contractor doing a more thorough job, said Petherick. In

that vein, the township will be looking at another increase in the special levy paid by Elmira residents when the 2014 budget is discussed.

Already in a deficit position is the wastewater budget, as wet weather has seen a large increase in the amount of water handled by the Region of Waterloo at the treatment plant, he said. As of the end of the quarter, the budget had reached a deficit of more than $250,000. That was offset by a $230,000 surplus on the water front, the upside of the wet weather.

The township is also keeping an extra eye on expenses related to the Ontario Municipal Board, where gravel pit issues have been front and centre.

Through September, Woolwich has spent just shy of $56,000 on that file.

Through it all, Ford still the pick of anti-elitists ROB FORD. A) Great fodder for late-night comedians?

B) A walking punch-line?

C) A prime example of the effects of hard living?

D) An admitted crack-smoker and heavy drinker whose popularity increased as the result of the scandal?

E) All of the above?

The answer, of course, is E. Yes, the mayor of Toronto has been subjected to a steady stream of ridicule this week, to go along with a steady stream of scrutiny since the day he was first elected. But many of his most ardent supporters – the so-called Ford Nation – have rallied around their man, leading to a five-percentage-point increase in polls taken after the crack developments.

Sure, Rob Ford may have had a few drinks, shown up drunk at public events, admitted to smoking crack cocaine after denying it for months, and hung out with some suspicious people, but it’s not like he was stealing taxpayers’ money or anything. That seems to be the bar that’s been set by those who refuse to see a problem here, the same people who blame the media and the mayor’s critics for making an issue out of Ford’s personal habits.

How do we explain the denial that mirrors what’s going on with partisans supporting Stephen Harper despite all the evidence against him? Chalk it up to an anti-elitism that’s particularly pervasive on the right. (Never mind that Ford was born into money and at times lives a life – as evidenced by police surveillance – that the “regular” people he supposedly represents do not share in.)

In some circles, being intelligent and educated is a bad thing, part of a dumbing-down trend.

Such populist, anti-elitist politics have been a mainstay in the U.S. for more than a century, emerging strongly in their current form since the early 1970s. In Canada, the implementation is much newer, emerging with Preston Manning and Reform movement.

To the south, the template was really set during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, hardly a bastion of brainy thought.

His aw-shucks, down-home appeal covered an attack on public institutions and a drive to promote individualism over the collective good. The educated, socially involved products of the 1960s were portrayed as out-of-touch idealists looking to spend taxpayers’ money while enjoying cushy government jobs.

The Canadian version follows the Republican model, stressing individual freedoms and denigrating public institutions while praising private enterprise. The idea is to have the public lose faith in government and politicians, with a goal of having us become consumers rather than citizens.

There is, for instance, Harper’s propensity to refer to Canadians as taxpayers, rather than as citizens. Policies are pitched from that perspective – we’re not citizens and voters in the classic sense, nor are we encouraged to think is such collective terms. We’re to be individual consumers.

To foster those sentiments, those advocating for social change and public institutions are depicted as self-interested, self-serving types who are out of touch with the opinions of the common people. The market and business offer what we really want and need.

The elites are not the bankers, oil tycoons and other robber barons of the past, but liberals and left-leaning activists who propose limiting market and individual freedoms … as defined by those on the right.

It’s lowbrow politics, American style, at its worst. But Ford isn’t one of those downtown-living, latte-sipping, tree-hugging elites, in contrast to the previous mayor, David Miller.

And that’s all the matters. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

There's more than science at stake in the race to Mars WORLD AFFAIRS The Curse of Mars also applies to Asian countries.

About two-thirds of the attempted missions to Mars have failed, many of them even before leaving Earth orbit, and most of the rest when they tried to land.

Japan’s only Mars mission failed in 1998, China’s first try failed when the Russian rocket carrying its Mars orbiter into space fell back to Earth in 2011 – and so India seized the opportunity to be the first Asian country to go to Mars.

Fifteen months after the decision was announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in an Independence Day speech from the Red Fort in Delhi, India’s halftonne Mangalyaan vehicle blasted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on the country’s east coast on Tuesday. It is already in Earth orbit, and within two weeks it will set course for Mars. Unless the Mars Curse gets it, of course.

There is something faintly ridiculous about

India and China “racing” to be the first Asian country to reach Mars, but it’s no more ridiculous than the Russian-American space race of the 1960s. Besides, to be fair to the Indian Space Research Organisation, the launch window for making a relatively lowenergy transition to a Mars orbit will close before the end of this month, and it won’t open again for more than two years.

Once Mangalyaan gets there, if it does, it will go into orbit around Mars and carry out various scientific experiments, notably a search for methane (an indicator of the presence of life) in the Martian atmosphere. At this point, various arrogant and/or sanctimonious people will point out that the American Mars rover Curiosity has already reported finding no methane on Mars, and that India is too poor to be indulging in such foolishness anyway.

The Indians will reply that NASA, the American space agency, also said that there was no evidence of water on the Moon – until the Indian lunar orbiter Chandrayaan-1 reported

the presence of water molecules in the lunar soil in 2008. They might also mention that if the United States waited until there were no more poor Americans before sending people to the Moon, the first U.S. mission might leave 50 years from now. Or maybe not even then.

The Indian space program operates on an amazingly small budget (about $1 billion a year), but it has put dozens of satellites in orbit that provide practical benefits for earthbound Indians: remote sensing, flood management, cyclone alerts, fishery and forest management, etc. But that’s all in near space; the question is really whether long-range space exploration is a rational proposition.

Nationalism is part of the motivation behind every country’s space program, and while it has its comical side it does at least persuade the political authorities to provide the large sums that are needed.

China is planning to land a rover on the Moon next month, and is talking about a manned landing there by 2024. That will certainly

speed up India’s manned space program.

Like the old RussoAmerican space race, the Chinese-Indian one will accelerate the development of new technologies and techniques. It will fill some of the gap left by the loss of momentum in the older space powers, and some useful science will get done. But the biggest reason for welcoming the entry of major new players in space exploration is the one that everybody is too embarrassed to mention: the future of the human race.

Well, almost everybody.

Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of SpaceX, the private company that aims to dominate the delivery-toorbit service once provided

by NASA, actually wants to create a human colony on Mars in his own lifetime – and he’s 41 now.

He is a serious player, whose large fortune (derived from his creation and subsequent sale of PayPal) is now devoted to manufacturing electric cars and building space transportation systems. Both projects DYER | 8

No chance need for food banks such as WCS will go away anytime soon EDITOR'S NOTES In a week when Woolwich Community Services was making a pitch for financial support from township council comes a reminder of the importance of one of the agency’s most visible contributions to the community: large numbers of Canadians rely on food banks.

WCS is looking for $25,000 from Woolwich, part of its $1-million fundraising goal to build a new home. The group hopes to be in a more spacious building next fall, one that includes more room for its much-needed food pantry.

While the grant is something councillors will have to ponder during budget deliberations, there’s no denying WCS provides a range of services of value to the township. Nor, unfortunately, can we deny the need for programs such as the food bank.

That much is abundantly clear in Hunger Count 2013, a national study re-

leased this week by Food Banks Canada.

The study finds that in a typical month, food banks in Canada provide food to more 833,000 separate individuals, nearly four in 10 of whom are children. Each month, 80,000 Canadians are forced to ask for help from a food bank for the first time. Nearly 40,000 of those helped each month are seniors with incomes too meagre to afford enough food.

The so-called working poor also make up a significant number of food bank users: one in six households assisted by food banks have employment income, yet still can’t make ends meet.

In Waterloo Region last year, food banks and their programs provided assistance to some 36,000 people.

The economic downturn in 2008 put more pressure on the food bank, which includes the efforts of Woolwich Community Services.

Even before then, demand was growing despite a stronger economy. While the 2013 Hunger Count saw a decline in usage – 4.5

kitchens, shelters, school breakfast initiatives, and other programs.

“Far too many people are looking into an empty fridge and wondering how they’re going to feed themselves and their kids,” says Katharine Schmidt, executive director of Food Banks Canada, of the results of the national study involving more than 4,000 food programs.

The people asking for help from food banks are diverse and often surprising, the study finds. For example, 12 per cent of households helped are currently employed, and another five per cent were recently employed. Half are families with children, and nearly half of these are two-parent families.

More than a third of those helped are children – kids who are going to school hungry.

“The inability to obtain enough food, when it is abundant all around us, is physically and psychologically scarring,” says Schmidt. “It is simply unacceptable in a nation as prosperous as Canada. We are calling on the federal

and provincial governments to make real investments in policies that will reduce the need for food banks.”

To that end, the organization recommends a number of policy changes aimed at the underlying causes of poverty and, consequently, demand on food banks. Those measures include increasing access to affordable housing, so that Canadians are not forced to choose between paying rent or buying food; boosting investment in education and training for Canadians at risk of failing in the job market, so that people can become selfsufficient through employment; and restructuring social assistance programs, so people can build selfsufficiency instead of being trapped in poverty.

Those recommendations are in keeping with proposals from other anti-poverty advocates.

While governments have given lip-service to reducing poverty, particularly as it applies to children, little has been done to actually follow through, as can be mea-

sured in reports such as Hunger Count 2013.

Housing, in particular, has been a sore spot, with costs eating up an increasing share of incomes. Under those circumstances, it’s no surprise to the food bank that so many people are accessing food assistance.

Almost 40 per cent of those served by Ontario’s food banks are children – equal to more than 140,000 children every month.

More and more households are unable to make it through the month without accessing food bank services, the organization reports. Those needing assistance tend to be younger: the median age is much lower than the provincial average (28.7 years vs. 38.2 years).

While demand is highest in the cities, the rural townships are not exempt: Woolwich Community Services, which looks after Woolwich and part of Wellesley, faces an ongoing need to re-stock its shelves to meet demand. New building or otherwise, that need isn’t going away anytime soon.

per cent – over last year, the five-year trend shows demand up 23 per cent.

Nearly half of food banks reported an increase in use in 2013; those food banks saw a 21-per-cent rise in the number of people coming to them for help this year.

Last year, food bank use reached its highest level on record.

In 2008, it appeared that progress was being made, as the number of people helped by food banks each month reached its lowest point in 10 years, the organization reports. However, the recession hit Canada later that year, and food bank use suddenly skyrocketed by 18 per cent, rising to 794,738 from 675,735 people per month in 2009.

It continued to rise until it hit a high of 872,379 last year. During this time, food banks and other charitable food programs have been stretched to their limits.

Increasing numbers of the working poor made at least occasional use of emergency food supplies.

are prospering, and he sees them as providing the financial and technological basis for pursuing his real goal: spreading human beings beyond this single planetary habitat while the launch window for that is still open.

Musk was quite frank about that in an interview with Rory Carroll in The Guardian newspaper last July. "The lessons of history suggest that civilizations move in cycles,” he said.

“You can track that back quite far – the Babylonians, the Sumerians. We’re in a very upward cycle right now, and hopefully that remains the case. But it might not.

“There could be some series of events that cause that technology level to decline. Given that this is the first time in 4.5 billion years where it’s been possible for humanity to extend life beyond Earth, it seems like we’d be wise to act while the window was open and not count on the fact that it will be open a long time.”

I’ll let you in on a little secret. That is a big part of the motivation (though a rarely admitted part) for half the people who work in any of the national space programs, including India’s. They value the science, and they may even revel in the glory from time to time, but that’s what it’s really about.

Victory in Paris an upside in Jacks’ weekend After losses to New Hamburg and Tavistock, Wellesley needed a bounce-back game to get to .500 WILL SLOAN The weekend started out rough for the Wellesley Applejacks, but they were able to salvage it with a win that earned praise from the coach.

The Jacks started at New Hamburg on November 1 with a discouraging 8-3 loss against the Firebirds, and struggled against the Tavistock Braves on home ice the next day, falling 4-2.

But the team picked up momentum on Sunday, beating the Paris Mounties 8-5 on opposition ice.

The numbers are in line with the generally mediocre results the team has seen so far this season, with six wins and six losses to rank sixth in the division.

On November 1, New Hamburg buried Wellesley with three goals in the first period, and while Alex Stoody scored for Wellesley at 1:44 in the second, New Hamburg struck back with five more. The Jacks scored the last two goals of the game (Stoody at 15:10, Devon Wagner at 17:31), but it was much too little, much too late.

Six players were absent from Friday’s game, including key forwards Troy Williams and Reid Denstedt, but head coach Rob Way refused to make excuses.

“One of our goals is to always beat the other team in special teams,” he said. “If we score more power-play goals than the other team, and we play that team even five-on-five, we should win every hockey game. On Friday, the team in New Hamburg had more hustle and drive than us five-on-five.”

Wellesley managed the first goal on Saturday against Tavistock (Brett MacDonald at 16:09), but the Braves countered with a goal in the second, and three in the third. Only Stoody would score again for Wellesley, at 12:06 in the third period.

It was looking like another defeat on Sunday, as Paris had the Jacks buried 4-2 midway through the second period (MacDonald and Blake Hetherington were the scorers for Wellesley). But beginning with Parker Wood’s goal at 12:36, the Jacks showed signs of life.

The tables turned decisively in the third period, as the Jacks scored five more goals, including two on an empty net (Paris was able to score only one more, in the last minute of play), taking a convincing 8-5 victory. MacDonald, Mckenzie Carter, Hetherington, MacJACKS | 12

Snap, crackle and pop aren’t just for breakfast cereals OPEN COUNTRY Just prior to the rifle season for deer, I was sitting in a natural ground blind with longbow in hand waiting for the merciful appearance of a deer. I say merciful, because I had been there for a few hours and my 51-year–old joints had gotten a bit stiff.

Five minutes later, in one of those cruel twists of fate, a good-sized, spike buck showed up and began casually feeding at seven yards – and broadside to boot.

I should have just jumped up and called it a day there and then.

You see every experienced hunter knows that this type of situation only happens in order to demonstrate God has a great sense of humour.

Here’s the thing. I’m 5-foot-3. That in itself is no big deal but it does figure into this situation because my longbow is 5-foot-2.

Kings split back-to-back games on home ice After taking it to Brantford Saturday night, team struggles with chances against the Siskins WILL SLOAN The hometown advantage brought only mixed results for the Elmira Sugar Kings last weekend, as the Junior B team notched a 4-2 victory against the Brantford 99ers on Saturday before falling 2-1 on Sunday to the Waterloo Siskins.

Sunday’s game marked

the second time this season that the Kings have faced the Siskins, and the second time they’ve lost to that team. But despite the visible on-ice tension, head coach Jeff Flanagan brushes off suggestions that the neighbouring squad is getting under the Kings’ skin.

“I think it’s more us than anything another team is doing,” said Flanagan.

“I think that lately we’ve struggled to score goals.

It’s an overly used phrase, but I think that our guys are squeezing their sticks a little too tight.

“We didn’t have as many chances as we did the last few games, so I think just getting back to shooting pucks more and not worrying about how we’re going to score, just getting pucks

there to the net.”

The Kings enjoyed good results against the 99ers on November 2, with Mitch Wright (assists: Brad Kobryn, David Savery) scoring the first goal at 15:16. Steven Jakiela (Cash Seraphim, Austin Fischer) followed at 9:40 in the second.

The third period went back and forth, with Brantford scoring at 1:46 and

13:29. But Elmira’s Brennon Pearce (Wright, Fischer) countered at 3:44, and Adam Campagnolo scored on Brantford’s empty net at 19:25, bringing the final tally to 4-2.

By contrast, the Kings were able to score only one goal against the Waterloo Siskins on November 3, with Zac Coulter (Savery, Kobryn) doing the honours

at 6:32 in the third period.

They were already well behind the Siskins, who scored at 13:41 and 19:49 in the second (the first goal coming on a penalty shot).

On the fast track to motocross victory Alma teen got a late start on his dirt-bike education, but he’s been quickly making up for lost time ELENA MAYSTRUK Two years ago, Davin Grose stepped onto the track for his first race.

“I was extremely scared and nervous. I almost felt sick. You prepare as long as you can, but when you actually race, it changes everything.”

The 19-year-old motocross racer from Alma came in first in MX2 Junior and second in the MX3 Junior races at the Fall Highpoint series at RJ Motorsports in Barrie last month. His wins earned him high points status in the fall series of motocross from the Canadian Motosport Racing Corporation.

The series features four races.

“First one, I kind of had high expectations: I knew I was going to do well,” he said.

It’s been a quick and

fun learning curve for the young rider.

“I wanted one ever since I could remember. My parents wouldn’t let me get a dirt bike, but when I turned 12 they finally gave in. They said I’d be 14, but I convinced them. I started riding around the farm and I got better and better, got bigger bikes and eventually I said, ‘I want to race.’

Getting a bike definitely changed it all,” Grose said.

He started competing two years ago locally and last year he competed in 14 semi-professional races.

“I love the challenge.

I want to win and I love going fast. There are big jumps and things like that – I love to do that.”

So is it the speed or the adrenaline that keeps him coming back?

“Well, both: you’re going fast, for sure, and the adrenaline is there. It’s a lot

Most riders these days get their bikes when they are still tots, Grose explained. Part of his accom-

plishment is being a late bloomer in the sport.

“Riders nowadays start when they are four or five years old, and I started

when I was 12. I got a late start, but I’m hoping to work my way up eventually. Maybe go pro someday.”

The sport is anything

but a mere diversion for the youth currently attending Conestoga College in a motorcycle mechanics program, a choice he hopes will keep him close to the industry as his skills grow.

He saw an abundance of training time this summer taking advantage of a job opportunity at the Motopark Training Facility in Chatsworth, Ontario.

Grose’s biggest accomplishment to date was participating in the Walton TransCan nationals, the biggest amateur race in Ontario, held in August.

Looking forward, he hopes to spend some time in the United States where race tracks in the southern states are open all yearround.

“I want to live at the track again and train all summer. And I want to race again, try to win the nationals.”

When asked to assess his team’s performance, Flanagan gave a mixed review.

“I think we worked hard.

I think that we’re playing a little more reactive than proactive. We’re not being lazy, we’re battling, but it seems like we’re waiting to see what happens, and then

we’ll figure it out.”

He continued, “I think over the past couple of weeks I’ve had that feeling, and it’s just a matter of keeping our guys’ confidence up. We’ll go back to work this week in practice, and focus on a couple of things to remedy that.”

The Kings will have another chance against the Siskins tonight (Saturday) on Waterloo ice before returning to the WMC to face Cambridge tomorrow. The puck drops at 7 p.m.

have to stand up.

Luckily, I had taken that into account when I placed my meager bait pile out. I put it behind a little boulder so that when the deer fed, its line of sight to my blind would be blocked, thereby allowing me a window of opportunity to move.

What I hadn’t figured on was the noises a middleaged skeletal structure rou-

tinely makes. You see when the deer’s head went down, I rose. More, importantly, my knees cracked as I rose.

The best way to describe that crack is to envision one of those movies where sailors are in a submarine trying to hide from enemy naval vessels. You know the sound the hull makes when they invariably descend to bottom beyond the depth that the submarine was rated to go? Well, my knees

creaked slightly louder than that.

This caused the buck to promptly raise his head and look straight at me.

And, I supposed, he probably figured since the noise was too loud for a creaking tree and that the area was not normally frequented by submarines, he stuck his tongue out at me and sprinted off, tail high, to show me what he thought of me on the way out.

Later, that evening, it occurred to me that rather than just giving up, I could use my new body noises to my advantage while hunting. For instance, I will never again carry out antlers to rattle in order to simulate a buck fight. Instead, I’ll just jump up in the air two or three times. That ought to produce enough bone-onbone action to bring in any buck spoiling for a fight.

I’ve also officially retired

my grunt call. Instead, when I want to make that sound, I’ll simply attempt to touch my toes. And, no doubt, if I succeed, I’ll make an involuntary fawn in distress call too.

The point is, I’m not going to let my changing body affect the way I hunt.

Instead, I’m going to take advantage of all those hard-earned noises that come with age and try to find ways to use them to

my benefit.

I was saying this to Jenn the other night just after we had a satisfying dinner of steak, potatoes and baked beans.

After dinner Jenn commented, “Beans was an odd addition to this meal.

Normally we have a green vegetable.”

“True,” I said. “But I’m going goose hunting in two weeks, and I’m hoping to perfect my new call ...”

Donald and Stoody paced the team to its win.

“We came out in the third period and absolutely dominated Paris,” said Way. “It was one of the best games, period, of the year. The kids all just hustled and gelled well, and it was very, very exciting.”

It wasn’t a matter of everything clicking at once, he added. “It was one of those games where a line went out and had a really good shift, the next line had a really good shift, and

they just kept building off each other. We got it tied 4-4, and we just kept going.”

With three of the top defencemen – Coleton Madge, Chris Beauchesne, and Jake Ariss – recovering from injuries, along with forwards Cody Tapsell and Pete Croal (on loan from the Sugar Kings), the Jacks have had to make do with a makeshift lineup. Way anticipates that Ariss and Tapsell will be back this weekend, with others following.

“I told the guys, ‘It’s tough, but I really believe that what we’ve gone through in the last couple of weeks is going to make us a tougher team come January and February,’” said Way. “It’s better to be injured now than January/February, when you’re trying to make a run for the playoffs.”

In Tavistock Friday night, the Jacks return to the Wellesley arena Saturday to take on the Delhi Travellers. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

A new place to call Home Project in St. Jacobs will provide more space for hardware store, along with residential tenants ELENA MAYSTRUK Currently a site in the early stages of construction, the project underway at the corner of King and Albert streets in St. Jacobs is destined to be a 66,542 square-foot multipurpose building that will feature a new Home Hardware store on the ground floor and residential apartments above.

Though the building will be new and efficient, developers hope to mirror the village’s old-world charm.

“It’s been a property that’s been owned by my family for a long time now.

The property was Good’s Garage from approximately 1921 until about 10 years ago. At that point, I built a new shop on Henry Street around 2003. I’ve always wanted to retain that property and do something kind of cool with it,” said Mike Good, president of King & Albert Development Ltd., the company behind the project.

His company has been working with Cambridge’s Schiedel Construction Incorporated on the designs for about two years and the finalized three-dimensional renderings for St. Jacobs Home Lofts were released this week.

The hope is to appeal to retirees and help further develop the St. Jacobs downtown area, he added this week.

The current King Street store has become cramped over the years, and the new building project will provide much-needed space for the growing retail operation that currently spans about 8,500 square feet. The new premises would provide a total of 25,225 sq. ft., 16,663 on the main level and 8,562 in the basement.

Like any debate, there are two sides to the story of if, and why, bees are struggling in Ontario right now.

Some say it’s because farmers are using insecticides called neonicotinoids at certain times of the year on corn.

But others say bee numbers are actually on the upswing, and when die-offs happen, something else is at play.

Whatever the case, it’s made bees a hot button, and rightly so – they’re significant pollinators of crops and other plants, and if their numbers are waning, we need to know and figure out a way to try fixing the problem.

That’s what the province is trying to do. Wisely, it’s brought together a wide span of experts – beekeepers, non-beekeeping farmers and scientists, among them – to try to reach consensus based on sound information, before deciding on a course of action.

In introducing the project to prospective tenants, Good is working on the residential portion of the project with St. Jacobs’ Henry and Grace Hildebrand, owners of St. Jacobs Place, which offers luxury independent or assisted living for seniors.

“People who are maybe selling their family home or farm and want a bit less responsibility and maintenance; this is set up as strictly month-to-month

rentals,” said Good.

Renderings of the planned structure show a square, three-storey sandy building with gray roof tiles, facing King and Albert streets. Located at 1420 King St. N., there will be four wide balconies at the back of the building, a sitting area with benches below on the ground level, and a parking lot at the rear of the property.

“We turned around a lot of ideas. I wanted to do something that would work in St. Jacobs, something that would contribute to the town and fit in nicely.

I always wanted to build a building that would fit into an old village rather than do something modern,” Good said.

ments – one-bedrooms, one-bedrooms with a den and two-bedroom units, ranging from 700-1,000 square feet – with granite countertops, crown molding, hard surfaces for the floors and some carpeting.

The building is currently sanctioned to hold 26 units.

Following the amendment of Woolwich Township’s new Official Plan, builders will be allowed to add two more for a total of 28 units in the residential part of the project.

The structure’s convenient square shape allows for space that will be used for recreation purposes, including two public suites with balconies overlooking King and Albert streets as well as dining, craft, theatre and billiard rooms and an exercise gym.

ROBERTS: More research needed to determine how to keep our bee population healthy FROM | 13

is not being honest. Farmers with fields the size of those needed to feed the nation or feed the world likewise need large-scale pest-control approaches.

Some of those approaches may impact bees.

Bees aren’t needed only in Ontario, or North America. Europe has likewise tried to find ways to preserve and grow its bee population, which, like that of Ontario, has fluctuated.

One UK expert is Dr. Helen Thompson. For the past two months she’s worked as the scientific expert to global crop and pesticide giant Syngenta, based in its UK office. Before that, she had a 20-plus year career as the leader of the environmental risk team at the UK Department of Food and Environmental Research agency, entrusted with (among other things) help-

ing find a balance between pesticide use and wildlife.

She worked on the honeybee file, asking the same kinds of questions being asked in Ontario today.

So her appearance as a guest speaker at Guelph’s annual pest management conference Thursday couldn’t have been more timely.

Based on her experiences in Europe – where some countries have instituted a moratorium on neonicotinoids – she’s urging Ontario to keep taking a broad view of the problem.

First, she says, develop a deeper understanding of the problem, which is in keeping with the province’s current, measured approach. While some beekeepers report catastrophic losses, others say bee colonies in Ontario have increased by 50 per cent over the past decade that

farmers have been using neonicotinoids here. Let’s find out for sure what’s going on.

And second, be sure of the culprit. Farmers do indeed use neonicotinoids at those times of the year that coincide with bee activity, which may expose bees to harmful pesticide dust. But what about the rest of the time?

Well, it turns out some nasty, tiny parasites called varroa mites, for which neither bees nor science have any effective defence at this time, have been ravaging hives worldwide for the past 20 years or so. They spread something called deformed wing virus, that basically renders bees unable to fly.

And it also turns out that during any given year, up to 20 per cent of the hive will simply have a natural dieoff. In the UK, Thompson found it was worse during

long, damp winters, when bees are subject to diseases that naturally occur in such environments.

Is climate change a problem associated with bee mortality? It seems to

get blamed for everything else, along with pesticides, industrialization, corporate farming and all the other old saws that are conveniently trotted out when problems arise.

happen next fall. The company is also finalizing plans for the current Home Hardware store, though it’s not releasing its intentions just yet, said company spokesperson Lindsey Dietrich.

Builders are aiming for spring 2015 for the completion of the residential units.

“I’m definitely hoping everybody will appreciate the building and enjoy the design. Hopefully, people will be happy that that empty hole in St. Jacobs is filled with something valuable,” Good said.

But like we’ve traditionally done, let’s call on research, get it done in a timely manner and truly understand the problem before we start telling farmers what to do.

Keeping it in the family key There’s a message in the comedy of Having Hope at Home, the latest production from the Elmira Theatre Company WILL SLOAN As anybody who has ever been part of a family can attest, dealing with your loved ones can be a far-from-loving activity. The secret to Having Hope at Home, the new dinner theatre production from the Elmira Theatre Company, is to find the funny side of family strife.

“You have to really, really look for the comedy, because if you play it straight it becomes very sad and very dull,” said director Rita Huschka. “You have to find the comedy and point it out, and that happens through the character building.”

As the old saying goes, “we laugh, that we may not cry,” and that’s surely advice for the protagonists of Having Hope at Home to take to heart. Written by the Canadian playwright David S. Craig, Having Hope at Home chronicles a family in a small, cold farmhouse as it prepares for the arrival of a baby.

Much in the way of intergenerational sparring ensues (“modern medicine meets midwifery head on in a torrent of family feuding,” promises the playwright), but through it all, the family learns to reconnect.

“It’s Canadian, which is really important to us – we

like to do a lot of Canadian plays,” says Huschka of the play. “And we thought it was ideal for our theatre company: the size of cast, the age of the cast members, the way it would play for our audience.”

She added, “It’s good for this time of year for our dinner theatre, because a lot of people have their Christmas parties – it really is a message of hope.”

This message of hope is central to the play’s impact, says Huschka. For all their feudin’, fussin’ and fightin’, the six-person cast (essayed by Tom Bolton, Becky Branton, Alex Clark, Rob Gray, Cathy Judd, and Trish Starodub) learn to love again.

“The message is conveyed in the characters in the play: There’s hope for our children, there’s hope for our grandchildren, there’s hope for all of our relationships.

“It’s very poignant and very true,” she continued.

“It authentic. There’s humour in pretty much everything that happens in everyday life – we just don’t always see it. It’s my job to try to point it out.”

Of course, you can’t have comedy without welltrained comic actors, and Huschka, an actor herself, has plenty of praise for the roster of veterans and relative newcomers.

“You tend to be more actor-driven as a director if you’ve acted yourself, because you know that, as brilliant as our tech people are, if we had nothing but a bare stage, as long as the acting is good, it will work.”

She continued, “I think timing is instinctive. It can be learned, but it takes a lot of practice. … They’re all in tune now, and when you add an audience, that will change the entire dynamic of the show, because there will be laughter, tears, and everything in between.”

The trials, tribulations, and ultimately deep bonds of family are recurring motifs in the Elmira Theatre Company’s productions (consider its recent production of Norm Foster’s The Melville Boys, or even the shenanigans of The Murder Room). Could this be a conscious decision?

“I don’t know that it’s conscious, but we do consider ourselves a family at our theatre company,” replied Huschka. “Our audience has been with us a long time, and the older you get, the more important you realize family is.”

Developing a passionate eye Never leaving home without her camera and shooting constantly pays dividends for Alma’s Sharon Grose WILL SLOAN “I don’t ever leave home without my camera,” says Alma-based photographer Sharon Grose. “My kids tease me because any time we’re going anywhere, they always plan half an hour or 15 minutes extra, because you never know when mom’s going to run into something she wants to take a photo of.”

“Oh, tho-o-o-u-u-usands,” she interjects. “My husband keeps buying additional computer space for me.”

And over a lifetime?

“I can’t even count,” she laughs. “I shoot several hundred every time I go out.”

Sharon Grose started dabbling in photography when she was in high school, as a foreign exchange student in Germany, and developed her chops taking photos as a 4-H junior farmer. Today, she freelances for a range of agricultural industry magazines, and at the 2013 Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation Awards in Agassiz, BC, she went home with silver and bronze medals for her photography.

She didn’t go with any expectations, she says, but there was one picture she took this year that she knew struck a chord: “A woman driving her tractor home from the Stratford fall fair,” she says.

“I had been at the fair

as well, and she drove past me in her tractor, and I thought, ‘Wow.’ It was one of those days, the leaves were colourful and she was smiling as she was driving – a carefree look. I just drove past her, stopped, took her picture, and then I had to follow her to find out who she was.”

She added, “Once it was published, I started to get people calling saying, ‘Wow, you really captured that woman, and that moment in time.’ …When the general public starts responding to you, then you realize you’re on to something.” This picture brought Grose the silver medal.

With the advent of digital turning everyone into a self-proclaimed photographer, it’s easy to lose sight of the artistry and craft a professional can bring.

What are Grose’s tips and tricks for quality photography?

“For me, it’s having a rapport with people,” says Grose. “The first thing people will say is, ‘Oh, I don’t like having my picture taken.’ It’s important to build a rapport with the person you’re taking a picture of.

With farmers, if you ask them about their favourite tractor, favourite livestock, ask them about their top producer, then they start to relax, and they forget that you’re there.”

A satisfying twist on that old favourite, chili RECIPE NOTES One of our kids’ favourite meals is chili. This onepot wonder is not limited to ground beef and cheese: low-fat options include local chicken, turkey or quinoa – a satisfying and modern twist on an old favourite. I remember a chili cook-off as a kid and my father making his “chili con carne” – this crock pot of goodness was a winner.

Although I remember the recipe, I will admit to twisting it over the years. Our latest is the “Mardi Gras Chicken Chili,” bringing chicken breast, rice, black, beans and classic Cajun trinity together in tomatoes and chicken stock. The end result is a clean and fresh chili with loads of flavour.

This chili recipe can be done in the crock pot, giving you time at the end of the day to do with as you please. Perhaps some cornbread muffins would be a nice addition to the table.

“I like to be like a fly on the wall – people know I’m there, but I’m not there,” she says. “I like to be aware of the background, and take close pictures. So many people snap pictures, and there’s so much in the picture, but it’s too much. Get a nice zoom lens.”

And while some purists bemoan the loss of film, Grose has seen the digital revolution only enhance her craft.

“I had a darkroom when we first got married at our farmhouse basement,” she remembers. “Then, you only took what you thought you absolutely had to take. Now, with digital, you can shoot, shoot, shoot and delete. Digital is so much easier.”

Turkey Chili 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1/2 a large onion, diced 1 clove of garlic, chopped 1 tbsp chili powder 2 tsp cumin 2 bay leaves 1/2 of each red and green pepper, diced 1/2 green zucchini 1 lb ground turkey or chicken 1 can of diced tomatoes 1/2 can of tomato juice 1 small can of tomato paste 1 can of butter beans 1 can of black beans 1/2 cup of cooked rice

In a large pot, sauté ground turkey until cooked through, add herbs, spices and peppers. Sweat for 5 minutes;

Stir in the tomato paste and cook out until it is bright orange (3-4 minutes), add tomatoes and tomato juice. Reduce heat and simmer; Once the chili has cooked about one hour, rinse off beans in cold water and add to the chili. Add rice, heat through and serve.

In the crock pot, add the browned turkey, vegetables, herbs and spices, tomato paste, tomatoes and juice in the morning before work, turn on low and allow to cook while you are at work.

Cornbread 1 cup yellow cornmeal 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 tsp salt 1 tbsp baking powder

2 eggs 1 cup milk 1/4 cup butter, melted 1 tbsp chopped parsley

In a bowl, combine all dry ingredients; In separate bowl, beat eggs until frothy, beat in milk and butter, add parsley; Add to the dry ingredients and mix; Pour batter into buttered 8” square pan bake at 350F for about 30 minutes. A toothpick will come out clean when the bread is baked through; Allow to cool slightly and cut into squares to serve.

bus next to a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Got milk?â&#x20AC;? poster and you smell cookies. Is it your imagination?

A. Not necessarily. In

2006, dairy industry advertisers in the San Francisco area added the scent of cookies to bus shelters with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Got milkâ&#x20AC;? posters in an attempt to cash in on the milk-cookie association in U.S. culture, according to Canadian anthropologist David Howes, as reported in â&#x20AC;&#x153;New Scientistâ&#x20AC;? magazine.

Though such multisensory marketing is not new, it is growing in sophistication:Â

The â&#x20AC;&#x153;Taste the rainbowâ&#x20AC;? slogan of Skittles sweets and the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hear the big pictureâ&#x20AC;? tag line for Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s national radio broadcaster overtly meld two senses, but less obvious are hotel chains using signature scents, coffee shops coordinating music with brewing smells and flavors, holiday buying enhanced by synergistic music and fragrances. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With so much competition for consumersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; attention, no sense is left unturned,â&#x20AC;? Howes says, with trademark protection even being extended to colours, shapes, sounds and scents. Yet when Harley-Davidson tried to trademark the â&#x20AC;&#x153;hogâ&#x20AC;? sound of their revving engines, it was deemed not distinctive enough. And, â&#x20AC;&#x153;responding to a perceived

consumer desire for purity, Pepsi marketed a clear cola with the slogan, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never seen a taste like this.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Â The idea failed ... because people associate cola flavour with a dark, rich colour, so they associated lack of colour with less flavour.â&#x20AC;?
