The distinction has been awarded by the Wellesley and District Board of Trade annually since 1974, “to provide the community with an opportunity to honour and recognize the outstanding achievements and unselfish contributions of their fellow citizens. Each year the award acknowledges a remarkable individual that motivates and inspires others through their vision, leadership, talent, humanity and spirit of community service. As the award is community based, the nominees come directly from the community, and those touched by these outstanding individuals.”

Kiwanis Club readying for its food drive Volunteers will be out in force across Woolwich next Saturday collecting for WCS Christmas hamper program WHITNEY NEILSON The Elmira Kiwanis Club is at it again, aiming to raise another 20,000 pounds of food for the Woolwich Food Bank through its annual food drive.

Fred Karpala, co-chair of the food drive, said the charity event helps provide 85 per cent of the food donations needed for the Christmas hampers put together by Woolwich Community Services.

“For our township I think that’s a major effort and major contribution,” Karpala said.

They raised so much food last year that WCS had to give some of the donations to other food banks. But Karpala said this shouldn’t deter people from donating, it just means they’re not adding additional routes or volunteers to try to beat their record.

“We had about 200 volunteers, all kinds of groups like hockey teams and scouts and cadets and the Lions Club in St. Jacobs helped us out, the Air Cadets in Breslau,” Karpala said.

A new group joining the drive is the EDSS First Robotics team. They have about 40 members who will be making up teams to canvas four different routes.

The Kiwanis Club started the food drive in 1997 because they wanted to help replenish the food bank.

The first year they used one of the Kiwanis Transit buses for a stuff-a-bus

campaign. It was a very small group of just Kiwanis members and they did it over two weekends just in Elmira.

From there it expanded to all of Woolwich.

“After a number of years they were doing all of Elmira and started spreading to the towns outside,” Karpala said. “Last year we covered all of Woolwich township, all the towns and villages, including Breslau, and Maryhill, and Conestogo, St. Jacobs, the Woolwich side of Heidelberg.”

Karpala joined the Kiwanis Club in 2006 and was a canvasser for the first two years. The next year he started helping out with the organizing, putting the teams together, and publicity.

“It’s quite a big undertaking for us,” Karpala said. “We have one person in charge of volunteers and another person in charge of all the other things that need to be done like publicity and organizing, getting people to donate.”

They’re asking that anyone wishing to leave the food on their doorstep, do so before 9 a.m. because canvassers will be heading out then. Karpala said they always get a couple calls from people saying their donations weren’t picked up because people put the donations out after volunteers had already passed their house.

Staying local always appealed to her

A desire to stick with a small-town branch kept Sandy Ladd at BMO’s Elmira branch for 39 years, but now retirement has her shifting gears somewhat “They were already ahead in technology.”

She started as a full-time teller and then went to part-time when she had her first child, then onto lending. She didn’t come back to full-time until 1988, but some of that part-time work included full-time hours. She leaves the bank as a financial service manager, which means she did lending and investing.

“In the earlier days you either did lending or you did investing,” Ladd said.

“But then that evolved and they expect you to do everything. Jack-of-all-trades in banking is, I guess, what it would be.”

She lived in Elmira when she worked at Canada Trust but moved to Goldstone in 1980. She said what’s kept her at the same branch for so many years is the smalltown connection. She had opportunities to go to the

Sandy Ladd says this makes her an “oddity” in the banking world, but she enjoyed where she was.

Why mess with a good thing?

Her first job after high school was with CIBC. She moved to TD for a year and then switched to Canada Trust. The Elmira branch of Canada Trust was bought by BMO in September of 2000.

“When I started with Canada Trust having come from a bank, their systems there were already kind of advanced in comparison to the banks,” Ladd said.

“I prefer the clients in small towns and the Mennonite clients,” Ladd said.

“We’ve had staff that have come here for a while from the city and then they’ve had to move back. You’d be amazed at how much they enjoyed their time here.”

Working at a small branch seems more rewarding for her. In Elmira, she says, you get to know your customers because they become repeat clients.

Some of hers are on their third generation. Whereas at the city branches there’s another branch not that far away so people go in wherever is convenient.

“I have always preferred lending, doing mortgages and such,” Ladd said.

“Helping a young couple get their first house I’d have to say is the most

rewarding because their excitement sort of spills over.”

During her time at BMO, there’s been several renovations. At one point when she was with Canada Trust they had realtors too. Another way of looking at it is, she jokes, is that she’s been there longer than the furniture has.

Ladd says the way of banking has certainly changed during her career.

When she started there weren’t bank machines and it was a big deal when they got their first ATM. She notes that because of online banking, walk-in traffic has decreased.

“The seniors still come in a lot but online banking has certainly grown,” Ladd said.

Notice Of Public Consultation Centre No.2 Class Environmental Assessment Study Conestogo Plains Water Supply System Background In January 2013, the Region of Waterloo (Region) completed the West Montrose Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) study that recommended, subject to a detailed review of the Conestogo Plains system, a permanent connection from West Montrose to the Conestogo Plains water supply system to ensure a sustainable and long-term water supply option to the community of West Montrose.

Class EA Study for the Conestogo Plains Water Supply System In August 2013, the Region initiated a Class EA study to confirm the feasibility of using the Conestogo Plains system to also supply West Montrose. As part of this study, several alternatives for servicing both communities were identified and evaluated based on social/ community, technical/natural environment and economic impacts and available mitigation measures.

This solution offers the opportunity to also connect the Conestogo Golf Course service area to the IUS in the future. The preliminary preferred water supply solution has been selected to minimize potential impacts and maximize the opportunity to provide sustainable and reliable water servicing to the West Montrose and Conestogo communities.

Grebinski is excited, yet humbled by the acknowledgment.

“I was blown away,” Grebinski said at his home in the village. “Kim (Heinmiller) phoned me up, and it just wasn’t clicking in.

It’s such a huge honour.

We’ve been out here for 10 years and I have kind of had my finger in the pie a little bit here and a little bit there over the years.

But there are just so many people out here who are worthy and deserving; it is such an honour to be chosen. Wow.” Grebinski is a big supporter of the Wellesley Applejacks as a past-president and current equipment manager. And he’s also involved at the minor hockey level, as a member of the Twin City Minor Hockey banquet committee, which runs the season-end celebrations for the local hockey association and presents graduating midget players with Twin City jerseys to commemorate their time spent with TCMH. He has also run the Wellesley home show for the past five years, and is a regular volunteer at the fall fair and the Apple Butter and Cheese Festival.

“He’s involved in quite a few things,” Wendy Sauder, the Wellesley and District Board of Trade treasurer and 2002 recipient of the award said. “He’s like a full-time volunteer. He

He’s just one of those guys that once he was available (retired about five years back) he just went at it. It’s wonderful.”

It’s important for the township, which is well known for its sense of community, to celebrate volunteerism, she added.

“We all have busy lives, but you have to take the time to bring things to your town that aren’t being provided by the township.

It just gives us more things that we wouldn’t have without volunteers getting behind projects. And it is so important that we recognize those people who get involved.”

For his part, Grebinski is happy to help.

“I just love it out here,” he said. “It is so neat walking down the street and waving to everybody because you know everyone.

Everybody helps everybody.”

RETIREMENT: More time for volunteer work FROM | 3

past couple years because of an increase in fraud. Not with their branch so much, but city branches get a lot of it she said. All the banks have had to tighten control.

“I think you’re still going to have a bank,” Ladd said.

“There are still some people who prefer to sit down with someone. Sometime it’s hard to get through on a

1-800 number if you have a problem.”

What she’ll miss the most are staff and a lot of her clients, especially the Mennonite community.

“I’m certainly going to miss a lot of them. Some of the staff are more friends, not just fellow employees.”

As for her retirement she hopes to increase her involvement with the Wool-

wich Community Lions and help do eye screenings for kindergarten students, since she won’t be working in the daytime anymore.

“I’ve got one grandchild here in town and they’re expecting a second one in January,” Ladd said. “And then I have grandchildren in Alberta. And then there’s that to do list. And maybe a little travel.”

It’s important to note that all donated items must be non-perishable, as the items won’t be given out in the hampers until mid-December.

“We’ve had pumpkins and squashes and bananas and apples, and we always say non-perishable items,” Karpala said. “It’s great

that people are willing to donate something but those kinds of things aren’t going to last.”

Volunteers will be going door-to-door in all of Woolwich Township collecting food on November 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Harris takes aim at aviation tax Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Michael Harris and PC colleague Laurie Scott, the party’s tourism critic, last week launched a website and petition aimed at the provincial government’s aviation fuel tax increase.

The petition calls on government to “ground the flight tax increases pending meaningful consultation and a full study of their adverse economic impacts before it’s too late to reverse the damage to Ontario’s economy.”

“The premier put forward a 148

per cent tax increase on aviation fuel without any consideration of its economic consequences – the loss of up to 3,000 jobs and $100 million in GDP is just the start,” said Harris, the Tory’s transportation critic. “So we want to give those impacted – families and business people paying the tax-increased ticket prices, the air travel and tourism industry – a voice to, ‘Ground the Flight Tax’ before it’s too late.”

Harris noted in a release that the website was being launched in response to the government’s refusal to reconsider on the tax increase.

A study by Dr. Fred Lazar of the

Schulich School of Business indicates that eliminating – as opposed to increasing – the punitive tax, as BC, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Saskatchewan have already done, could provide a $138 million economic boost, add 52,000 additional tourists and close to 2,000 jobs, according to the release.

“We’re moving in the wrong direction, sending tourists and even our airlines outside our borders where other aviation tax-free jurisdictions are only too happy to welcome the economic input,” Harris indicated.

“I’m hopeful our petition and website will help to turn this ship around –

giving a voice to those impacted and working with them to ground the flight tax before it’s too late.”

A blanket smoking ban on playgrounds and public sports fields in the province goes into effect January 1, replacing a municipalityby-municipality system. Woolwich, for instance, first broached the subject in 2012.

Smoking to be illegal on sport fields, patios The changes to the Smoke-Free

Ontario Act announced last week also make it illegal to smoke on bar and restaurant patios, and to sell tobacco on university and college campuses.

The goal is to limit smoking in public places, reduce exposure to smoking and make it more difficult for young people to buy tobacco.

Studies show that nearly all smokers start using tobacco before the age of 18. The new regulations will help prevent youth smoking and protect Ontarians from exposure to second-hand smoke, says the Canadian Cancer Society.

“Creating smoke-free outdoor spaces and patios not only protects

the public and workers from secondhand smoke but also reduces social exposure to smoking behaviour. The less that youth are exposed to adult smoking, the less likely they are to view it as normal behaviour and to start smoking,” says spokesperson Rowena Pinto in a release.

Each year, tobacco claims 13,000 lives in Ontario – equivalent to 36 lives every day, the government notes. Tobacco-related disease costs Ontario’s health care system an estimated $2.2 billion in direct health care costs and an additional $5.3 billion in indirect costs such as lost productivity.

Public responding to Waterloo Regional Police firearms amnesty program Launched at the start of the month, the Waterloo Regional Police’s firearms and prohibited weapons amnesty program paid off dividends from the get-go of the month-long initiative. The community is responding, with people contacting police to arrange for removal of a variety of guns and weapons.

In the first week, police collected 38 firearms, including four prohibited handguns; 12 pellet guns, prohibited knives, bear spray; and several dozen boxes of ammunition.

Amnesties conducted in other Ontario communities have been successful in encouraging the public to contact police about firearms that were illegally owned or no longer wanted, local police say.

3:45 AM | On Church Street in Elmira, a male was observed driving a vehicle without headlights. Police conducted a stop and discovered the driver was 14 years old and had been drinking. A breathalyzer test was administered resulting in an “alert.” The teen was issued a three-day alcohol suspension, and faces numerous Highway Traffic Act charges.

8:00 AM | Sometime overnight, a water meter valued at $1,000 was stolen from an industrial construction site on Oriole Parkway East In Elmira. The investigation continues.

2:10 PM | Emergency crews responded to a fire at the Euro-Can pet food plant in New Hamburg. The fire was believed

to have started in the ovens used to cook ingredients for the dog treats made at the facility. The fire was contained to the building, with no threat to adjacent properties. Firefighters from New Hamburg were on scene when police arrived. The fire was not deemed suspicious.

9:15 PM | Police stopped a vehicle being operated by

a suspended driver on Huron Street and Wilmot Easthope Road in Wilmot Township. The two men in the vehicle were found to be in possession of cocaine and marijuana. One of the men had a warrant for his arrest. The two 20-year-old New Hamburg residents were charged with numerous drug and Highway Traffic Act offenses.

The ongoing history of the Commercial Tavern Built in 1854 and home to music and beverages through it all, the Maryhill landmark celebrates 160 years WHITNEY NEILSON If these walls could talk, they’d have enough stories to fill two lifetimes.

The Commercial Tavern in Maryhill marks its 160th anniversary this month, a momentous occasion for a small-town country bar that changed hands numerous times over the years.

Paul Weber, owner and country musician, bought the bar and hotel in 1996.

When he got it the walls were bare, nothing close to how they look now. Hundreds, if not thousands of historic photos and memorabilia line the walls and tin ceiling.

For Weber, it was important to return the tavern to its down-home roots.

“I have always been in love with the building, the structure,” Weber said. “Everything is hand humed: the rafters and the logs and the timbers. The building has stood for 160 years and I always remember playing here as a kid and the feel of this room. Even empty this room has atmosphere.”

To help mark the occasion, there’ll be even more of the music that’s been the hallmark of the Commercial since Weber took over.

Next week, they’ll have a regular Thursday night jam followed by celebratory weekend performances.

On the Friday and Saturday night he’ll be playing along with guest Harold MacIntyre. Dan Howlett will be performing on Friday night and Fiddlin’ Nellzy comes to the tavern for a Saturday evening performance.

Saturday afternoon they’ll have karaoke as they always do, and free hot dogs and pop for the kids. They’ll be no cover charge for Friday and Saturday night.

The walls help give the tavern its unique charm.

He found pictures all over the hotel and different tools, which he has on display. People stepped forward with donated items when they saw what he was doing.

“Sometimes a room does a lot of entertaining on its own,” Weber said. “When people are waiting for their meals, waiting for friends to show up, the room will entertain just by looking around.”

In 1854 Louis Frank built the tavern and operated it until his son-in-law Charles Halter took over. The hotel had a saddlery, a dry-goods store, a shoe store, a bank, and a doctor’s office. The adjoining pool room was added in 1894 and hydro wasn’t installed until 1934.

The Halters passed down the bar through the family for about 100 years, and in 1984 Lawrence Finnigan

bought it. Four years later it was sold to Vic Diebolt.

The last proprietor before Weber was Neil Duncan in 1976.

“My uncle owned the bar in the mid ‘60s to the early ‘70s, and at that time my dad’s weekend band, along with the family, we all played here,” Weber said.

He went on the road in 1974 to play music, calling an end to the touring after 22 years to buy the building in 1996. He said he wanted the bar because he was familiar with it and he wanted a venue out of the city, so that people actually had to make an effort to get there.

“I liked the history of the bar. I like that it’s an old room and lots of atmosphere, the rural effect out here with the people,” Weber said.

In terms of renovations, he put new floors in, done in the style of the 1880s – wooden screw and peg style. He said he wanted to keep the bar looking

Weber is found on stage at the tavern as often as he’s behind the bar. historical. They also did a major renovation to the washrooms about three years ago.

The tavern used to have its own winemaker and the town council even used to meet here. Weber’s heard many a story in his days playing at and operating the bar.

“Because it’s so close to the church, back in the old days many of the residents

would drop their wives and kids off at the church and come down here and be drinking while church was going on,” Weber said.

“One day [the priest] came in, so the story goes, with his handgun and fired a shot through the ceiling and said ‘okay you guys, up to church.’”

There used to be a dancehall upstairs and in the back there was a round

domed ceiling built out of stone where they’d keep the ice all winter long. You can still see the cement foundation where hotel guests would keep their horses for the night.

“I think probably the most interesting part about the place is that it’s always been a tavern. There was never a time it was anything else and that’s pretty amazing, especially with the changing times,” Weber said.

Another point that drew Weber in to the bar is that music has always been there. There was a time before he bought it where a couple from Toronto brought in some major bands, like Barenaked Ladies and Long John Baldry.

That lasted for about four and a half years.

He marvels at the fact the building was here before the West was won, before the days of Billy the Kid and Jesse James. And the fact it’s still here means something to him.

“You don’t have to get rich in life to get satisfaction off of it and it’s been that for me,” Weber said.

He celebrated his 18th anniversary of playing at the tavern on October 16.

He said he hopes he can keep doing what he’s been doing. While it’s difficult to get staff out to Maryhill because of a lack of public transit, they have a very loyal clientele base.

He says he thinks the original owners did it right the first time and he’ll try to keep it that way.

“I managed to use the first half of my life on the road playing music to set up the last half of my life,” Weber said. “The fact I can bring in who I want and play with who I want musically, it’s been a real blessing and even if it ended today I can’t say it hasn’t been quite a ride.”

Many of the memorabilia on the walls are old country singers and musicians who’ve stopped in over the tavern’s 160 years.

Brace yourself for another round of pipeline debates THE U.S. MID-TERM ELECTIONS having delivered both houses of Congress to the Republicans, and some Democrats feeling the heat, we’re already seeing renewed calls to move ahead with the Keystone XL pipeline.

President Barack Obama continues to be wary of the project. An immediate change of heart is unlikely given that just this week he committed to seeing his country reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26 per cent from 2005 levels by 2025. The pledge was part of an accord with China, which also agreed to changes, though only to slow the rise of its emissions over the next 15 years.

A pipeline to funnel more dirty tar sands bitumen to refineries on the Gulf Coast may not be in keeping with plans to reduce GHG emissions. The accord also puts a crimp in Stephen Harper’s climate change denial stance, as he’s indicated Canada would make changes in tandem with U.S. policy.

Obama’s eventual decision will dictate just how serious his commitment to combating climate change, the crux of his impassioned speech this week, really is.

Significantly, proponents in this country see the U.S. decision as the only real hurdle, despite significant resistance to the plan here. Given Alberta’s position and the mindset of the federal government – clear in the tar sands propaganda advertising/Tory election ads masquerading as an economic action plan, with the bill picked up by taxpayers, no less – the goal must be to cram the pipeline down Canadians’ throats, resistance be damned.

And we’re clearly unsure about these large pipeline projects. Keystone has been slammed. Northern Gateway, which would see bitumen flow to a West Coast port, has been panned by almost everyone. Now, a plan to run a pipeline east is meeting increased resistance.

Our hesitancy is understandable. Spills, commonplace already, are inevitable.

The industry claims pipelines are still the safest way of transporting oil. That’s true. It would take millions of trucks or railcars to move the oil, each providing numerous opportunities for spillage. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement, as problems occur far more frequently than we hear about.

In Alberta alone there have been thousands of pipeline ruptures since 2005, spilling the equivalent of some 28 million litres of oil. In 2010, for instance, the province’s pipelines had some kind of failure every 1.4 days, releasing about 3.4 million litres of oil.

Pipeline problems aren’t rare, industry claims notwithstanding. They’re fairly commonplace. That said, the infrastructure still delivers far more oil and gas on a daily basis than is inevitably released at intervals. Supporters essentially tell us that the spills are the price of doing business, the business of feeding our oil addiction.

As long as we’re so reliant on oil, we’ll be taking it out of the ground and moving it around in large volumes. That doesn’t mean, however, that we shouldn’t be more careful about how we do that while we go about finding alternatives.

Oil offers us many advantages, which we may or may not choose to enjoy over the many negatives. While we use the stuff, we’re all complicit in the pollution, habitat destruction and increased cancer rates and other health problems that come with that arrangement. That’s no reason, however, to cut off debate about how we might start changing the situation.

After a long winter, bad spring, crappy summer and a return to a dark and gray fall, “the autumn of our discontent” has something of a ring to it.

The Soviet Union defunct, there’ll be no new Cold War WORLD AFFAIRS “The world is on the brink of a new Cold War. Some say that it has already begun,” said Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union and the man who inadvertently administered a mercy killing to communism in Europe. He’s 83 years old, he played a leading role in ending the last Cold War, and he’s practically a secular saint. Surely he knows what he’s talking about.

No he doesn’t. Not only has this new Cold War not begun already, but it’s hard to see how you could get it going even if you tried.

The raw material for such an enterprise is simply unavailable. You can summon the ghosts of history all you want, but they are dead and they can’t hear you.

Gorbachev was speaking in Berlin, now once again the capital of a united Germany, on the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Even he would agree that it turned out to be, on balance, a good thing, but

he is a great deal more ambivalent about the collapse of European communism and the dismantling of the Soviet Union.

His original goal, and his hope right down to the end in 1991, was to save communism by reforming it, not to bury it. He also believed, or at least hoped, that if he could make communist rule “democratic” and userfriendly, he could save the Soviet Union as well. But the Soviet Union was just the old Russian empire in new clothes.

Gorbachev was and is a romantic, and he undoubtedly agrees with his rather less cuddly successor as president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, that the collapse of the Soviet Union was “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century.”

So of course he ends up defending Putin’s actions and blaming the United States and NATO for this alleged drift into a new Cold War. It’s all nonsense. Nothing could have saved the old Soviet Union. It was the last of the European empires to fall, mainly because it was land-based rather than sea-based, but only half its population was Russian.

When it finally dissolved, 15 different nations emerged from the wreckage, and its collapse was no greater a loss to civilization than the fall of the British or French empires.

And the main reason you can’t have a new Cold War is precisely because the “evil empire” (as Ronald Reagan famously called the Soviet Union) no longer exists. There is only Russia, a largely de-industrialized country that is run by a kleptocratic elite and makes its living by exporting oil and gas.

Russia has only 140 million people (less than half the United States, less than a third of the European Union), and its armies are no longer based around Berlin and all through eastern Europe. They are 750 km (500 mi.) further east, guarding Russia’s own frontiers. They occasionally grab a bit of territory that isn’t covered by a NATO guarantee (Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Transnistria, Crimea, Luhansk, Donestk), but they dare not go any further.

So you could get a really unpleasant NATO-Russian confrontation out of this for

a while (although it hasn’t happened yet), but not a real Cold War in the old globe-spanning style. Russia just couldn’t hold up its end of it. As for World War Three, don’t worry. Putin cares a lot about saving face, but not that much.

Which leaves the question: who is to blame for this regrettable hostility between Russia and the Western powers? The West, in Gorbachev’s view. In fact, he had a whole list of complaints about Western threats, crimes and betrayals.

NATO broke its promise and let all the Eastern European countries that had been Soviet satellites during the Cold War join NATO. It let Kosovo declare its independence from Russia’s traditional friend, Serbia. It launched wars of “regime change” in the Middle East (Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya) that Moscow disapproved of. It even planned a missile defence system that allegedly threatened Russia’s nuclear deterrent (if you could believe that it would work).

With parallels between oil and tobacco industries, similar action may apply EDITOR'S NOTES Can public pressure of the kind used to fight apartheid and the tobacco lobby be used to curb the oil industry? Is that a tactic those concerned about climate change ought to take?

Can we, in fact, shame ourselves into reducing our use of fossil fuels to avert an environmental crisis?

Laura Hamilton certainly hopes so.

Hamilton is one of the founders of Divest Waterloo, a group encouraging us to rid ourselves of investments in the fossil fuel industry with the goal of reducing its capacity to extract yet more oil, gas and coal. On an individual basis, that starts with looking into where the money in our pensions and RRSPs is being invested. Or where our banks, churches and foundations are putting the money we give them.

It’s an uphill battle, but one Hamilton says has the potential to do more good than the individual conser-

vation measures we take, though we should still cut our energy use, recycle and the like.

“I love the idea of divestment because it allows me the opportunity to take individual action to bring my investments in line with my values. But it’s bigger than that – as a collective action Divestment demonstrates the moral leadership necessary to support system change,” she explains.

Divest Waterloo started out as a justice committee project at Parkminster United Church in Waterloo.

Concerned about climate change and fossil fuel use, the committee members were working on creating a vegetarian cookbook, reflecting that meat production creates more greenhouse gas emissions than all forms of transportation.

“But as we learned more about climate change, we recognized that individual actions alone won’t get us to where we need to be in the time we have left to get there – not when the fossilfuel companies continue to use their financial power to warp our democracy in

“The behaviour of the two industries is similar – the denial of issues, the attempts to confuse people about the science,” she says of the fossil-fuel and tobacco industries.

The divestment movement got something of a boost last week when UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon urged big investors such as pension funds and insurance companies to reduce their investments in fossil fuels and invest in renewable energy instead.

Using the funds taken from investments in fossil fuels to invest in new technologies is key, says Hamilton. Taking money out of fossil fuels is a great idea; putting that money into green options would speed up a large-scale shift away from our dependence on coal, gas and oil.

She also likes the idea of investing in green bonds, likening them to the victory bonds people bought, pooling their money for the war effort.

It may very well take that kind of dedicated collective effort to avoid the worst impacts of the climate

change models. To do so, we’ll have to keep the temperature increase to under two degrees Celsius. At our current rate of fossil fuel use, the planet could be four to six degrees warmer by the end of the century, however.

Author and environmentalist Bill McKibben points out that the maximum amount of carbon dioxide we can release into the atmosphere to keep with the two-degree limit is some 565 gigatons. At the current rate of increase, we’ll reach that state in about 15 years.

Still more disconcerting is the 2,795 gigatons of carbon dioxide – five times the safe amount – that the fossil fuel industry has in its collective reserves. Most of that will have to stay in the ground – stranded assets – if we’re going to avoid the worst.

It spells out the issues, including the industry’s undue influence, in simple terms. The course seems clear, but perhaps the largest barrier to any major

change, however, is human nature: we’re quite content with our lives today, and see no need to change that for some potential longterm benefit, one that’s unlikely to materialize in our lifetimes.

Quite simply, we expect things to continue as they have – we don’t see the urgency, suggests Hamilton “We can’t conceive of it,” she says of the possible outcome of inaction.

Most of us don’t want to think about the problem, let alone the solutions.

When we do, we’re sometimes convinced that technology will save us – “so far, we’re not seeing it” – or that something will happen in the future to help us deal with any problems.

And we want to believe that climate change isn’t really a problem, a sentiment preyed on by the fossil fuel industry that funds denial efforts.

“People want to believe the doubt,” she sighs.

order to perpetuate the status quo,” says Hamilton.

Pointing to the work of groups such as 350. org (named for the safe level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, 350 parts per million), she points out that the crisis is already upon us. Now is not the time solely for small, incremental steps. Instead, those concerned about the environment have to take on the strongest opposition to real change at the financial level.

The divestment movement won’t take off overnight. Just as the antiapartheid movement took years before its truths became self-evident, there’s much work to be done.

Hamilton also cites the battle with the tobacco industry, which spent years fighting against the evidence of medical research, smoking bans and government regulations. Eventually, smoking moved from commonplace to being tightly restricted, largely the result of turning public opinion. Supporters of divestment and similar actions hope to see the same in the climate change

Bullying rates in Canada are higher than two-thirds of OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries and 78% of Canadians believe that not enough is being done to stop bullying in their community. In 2013, Kids Help Phone saw a 10% increase in calls related to bullying and harassment during last year’s Bullying Awareness Week (Nov. 16-23 this year).

“While undermining Canada’s economic recovery, the rush to balance the budget has also impacted federally delivered services.

The biggest cuts were made in areas where Canadians most heavily rely on the federal government. It is not a stretch to say that veterans and the unemployed, for example, will be deprived of services for the sake of hurrying a return to federal surpluses.”

The first winter storm of the season blew through the region Nov. 13, closing schools, roads and businesses – many of which were left without power for much of the morning. With a combination of 110 km/h winds and swirling snow, area police were kept busy trying to keep up with all the collisions and vehicles blown off the road.

Between 6 and 11:30 a.m., Waterloo Regional Police responded to more than 60 collisions, mostly in Woolwich and Wellesley.

been invaded a lot in its history, but the license to be paranoid expires after 50 years. Of course the Eastern European countries all clamoured to join NATO; they’re still terrified of Russia. The Western great powers do lots of stupid stuff and some seriously bad stuff, and Russia has also done a fair amount of both in the past decade and a half under Putin.

The job of diplomats, and of leaders in particular, is to avoid the really stupid and dangerous stuff, and keep the rest to a minimum. Barack Obama has been quite good at that, as has German Chancellor

Angela Merkel. Putin used to be good at it, but is not so good now, perhaps because he has been in power too long. His military interventions in Ukraine have been alarmingly rash.

But nobody is going to go to war with Russia over Ukraine. The Ukrainians were told years ago that they couldn’t shelter under NATO’s security blanket, and they have chosen to defy Moscow anyway. They may pay a high price for that, and the Western alliance’s relations with Russia may go into the deep freeze for the remainder of Putin’s reign. But it will be just a little local difficulty, not a huge event that defines an entire era.

change run into the hundreds of billions. Coupled to the lifestyle changes and potential economic upheaval, the costs seem too onerous.

As individual action goes, divesting yourself of any fossil fuel holdings is probably much easier than making a lifestyle change.

Direct holdings are easy.

When it comes to pensions and the like, however, most of us have no idea what investments are held, so divesting – or suggesting divestment – might require more work.

Still, raising the issue

puts it on the table, creating political room for the topic, in the words of the anti-apartheid movement, Hamilton notes. In the marked absence of political leadership on the matter, the public can provide the moral leadership that may put pressure on the politicians and corporations.

“By moving our collective wealth to support the transition to a low carbon future, not only do we positively support the change that is necessary to avoid the catastrophic consequences of inaction, but we also make it crystal clear to our political leaders that we expect them to do the same.”

Re: Last week’s editorial (Observer, Nov. 8/14), “work for free” isn’t just a youth problem.

No matter what age you are, asking for job search assistance today and you are told (1) volunteer, (2) work part-time or (3) start a business. Ask for job assistance after the age of 40 and job coaches talk to you about “age discrimination.”

The problem isn’t job seekers. The problem is government and business.

Government believes corporate tax-cuts encourage job creation. Not! It encourages profits in offshore banks and tax havens.

When was the last time a company offered to train a new hire? I’ve lost track. I have spent too many hours working as a temp, expected to be an expert in my field for a fixed-term contract paying little more than minimum wage. That’s with a college education and 27 years of experience.

If corporations don’t pay tax and unemployed work-

ers can’t pay tax, government is on its way to bankruptcy.

What also adds to the problem is the myriad of “temp agencies” today. I am sure there are one or two who do a good job of outsourced human relations, but most are sales driven leeches that put a square peg in a round hole for the purpose of profit: they make their profits as a percentage of what they charge a company to put a low-paid worker into a job. We all lose with a revolving door as companies reject unskilled, inexperienced employees, while those of us who may have had appreciable skills are losing them.

Want to solve the unemployment problem? First, institute real taxation of companies; outlaw temp agencies; legislate the requirement to hire unskilled workers and train them for what you need; and introduce a payroll tax scheme that is inverse to rates of pay: that is, pay minimum wage and you pay the most tax; pay employees better and pay less tax until you pay a living wage and then you pay the least tax.

Pair of wins make it six in a row for Elmira Sugar Kings

It’s a tough grind for the successful hunter

Playing a 200-foot game gives the team the edge it needs even in the close games SCOTT BARBER Winners of six straight and eight of their last nine games, the Elmira Sugar Kings are excelling at both ends of the ice.

Last weekend, the Kings topped Cambridge 3-2 and Guelph 4-3, improving to 14-3-1 for the season, just five points behind – and with four games in hand – the Midwestern Conference-leading Kitchener Dutchmen.

“We have played some really good games and we have had some really good battles to win games,” coach Jeff Flanagan said.

“The guys have stuck to their jobs and have worked their way through some issues that we’ve had.”

Despite the great start to the season, there is still room for improvement, Flanagan said.

“The way we look at it is, it’s great to win, but those games are in the past. We need to keep practicing the things we are doing well and continue to try to get better every day.”

It’s a very competitive conference this season, and the Kings need to perform at a high level every game to stay at the top of the standings.

Take the November 8 match up in Cambridge, for example. While the Winter Hawks sit near the

bottom of the conference – in seventh place at 8-92 – they have been a tough out for the Kings in each of their three meetings; they have played three games with two wins for the Kings, one for the Hawks and all of them decided by a one-goal margin.

“It was tough right down to the end; it was a good hockey game,” Flanagan said. “I thought Cambridge played a really good game; it was the best we’ve seen them play this year.”

Mac Clutsam got the Kings on the board late in the first with a power play marker from Mitch Wright and Rob Kohli.

In the second, Alex Mutton (Adam Brubacher, Kohli) and Wright (Mitch Klie, Cash Seraphim) each found the back of the net, while the Hawks picked up a goal of their own.

In the final frame, Elmira surrendered one to former King Stephen Jablonski, but hung on for the victory.

Basically, the more venison burger you show a person, the less excited they get.

On the first bowl I showed her, she actually seemed excited

vacuuming the main level of our house. Yet, there in front of her, for the twelfth time was a true miracle.

Make no mistake. To a hunter, this is what an electric meat grinder is.

Take mine, for instance.

Now, with the mere touch of a button, I can stuff meat down the hopper and get burger out the other side.

It’s totally effortless.

And like all great technological innovations it saves you tons of time.

This, of course, is important.

You see, before getting this electric meat grinder I, like most hunters, wasted tons of time trying to find someone gullible enough to take on the job of cranking the handle of my manual meat grinder.

This became progressively more difficult. That’s because anyone you previously convinced to crank 20 pounds of meat through a manual grinder will, immediately after the experi-

ence, do three things. First, they will ice their cranking arm for a week. Then, they will get call display for their phone. Lastly, they will not answer any calls from you during the hunting season.

This means that you have to look for volunteers where you might not have before. For instance, if you have another buddy with a hand grinder you could place both facing away from each other within reach of a padded board on

roller skates, then take it to your local gym and tell people it’s a new type of rowing machine. Tell them a full workout cranks out 20 pounds of burger.

Again, however, that only works once.

Right now you are probably thinking that, if hand grinders are so bad, why do companies even make them?

The answer, of course, is to sell electric grinders.

There is nothing better for electric grinder sales

than one experience with a hand grinder. After that, all the person can think of is which model of electric grinder to buy. Interestingly, the worse the experience had, the greater the horsepower.

My previous experience was only with a bit of bear meat that had a little bit of sinew in it. That, however, prompted me to buy a 3/4-horsepower model.

I have a buddy who once ground down the entire hind quarter of an old bull

moose with a dull hand grinder though. He now has an electric meat grinder that doubles as a wood chipper.

Street lights dim when he turns it on. But it gets the job done in a fantastic way.

“Overall I am happy with the way our guys played,” Robb said. “We were short bodies and we had some guys playing out of position, but the group played hard and came through with a win.”

After stumbling out of the gate 3-9, a coaching change –Paul Wilkinson resigned and Tim Robb took over – and a three-game stretch against the winless Travellers have propelled the team to 7-9.

While they remain in second-last place, the streak leaves the club just a couple wins short of the tight group sitting in the numbers four through seven slots. And there is plenty of hockey left to be played.

Last weekend, the Jacks swept a home-and-home series against Delhi with a 7-0 blow-out on the road November 7 and a 2-1 overtime victory the following night at the Wellesley arena.

“I though we got off to a really good start,” Robb said of the win at Delhi. “We scored on our second shift of the game and it just kept on going from there. The guys had a lot of energy.”

Tyler Seguin opened the scoring 1:22 into the game from Blake Hetherington and Reid Denstedt. Three minutes later, Hetherington added one of his own from Jake Wilkinson.

Late in the period, Hetherington notched another, assisted by Denstedt and Seguin.

In the second period the goals kept piling up, as Mackenzie Sealy (Jacob Younger, Brady Gerber) and Cal Jefferies (Wilkinson) each found the back of the net.

And in the third, with a new Delhi netminder between the pipes, the Jacks sealed the deal with goals

This weekend the competition gets stiffer. The Jacks are homebodies, welcoming the Paris Mounties Friday night and the New Hamburg Firebirds Saturday. Game time both nights is 7:30 p.m.

To keep rolling, the Jacks need to “stay disciplined and bury their chances when they get them,” Robb said.

While the firepower certainly jumps off the score sheet, Robb made sure to acknowledge Jack’s starting goalie Tim Bester’s performance.

“Timmy (Bester) played really fantastic for us. He made some key saves (27 total) and we were very happy with the result down there.”

The shutout – his first of the season – improved Bester’s save percentage to .914 on the year.

On home ice the following evening, the Travellers put up a better effort.

“You can’t take them lightly at all,” Robb. “They have some good scorers and their goalie stood on his head.”

The game remained scoreless through the first two periods, despite a 28-

12 shot advantage for the Jacks.

Finally in the third, Delhi broke the draw with a goal at 3:28.

Senior Lancers football squad wraps up strong season While falling in upset loss in quater-finals, the EDSS team put together a good showing as sport continues to gain ground SCOTT BARBER While the Elmira District Secondary School’s senior football team’s season was cut short November 4 with a 17-7 upset loss to Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School in the WCCSSA quarter-finals, head coach Steve Karn is proud of the squad’s effort this year.

“It was one of the best seasons we have had in the A division, the elite division,” Karn said. “We lost the first game of the season, but they won the next five games in a row. That is probably the best we have ever done in the A division, to win five games. And we beat the team that’s going to play in the championship game.”

After falling 23-13 to perennial powerhouse Resurrection Catholic Secondary School to open the season, the group bounced back with an impressive winning streak.

The roll included a 42-7 thumping of Waterloo Collegiate Institute, a 35-10 rout over Bluevale Collegiate Institute, a 44-16 thrashing of St. David Catholic Secondary School, a 35-0 blowout of Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute, and a 29-28 squeaker over St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School.

But injuries caught up with them by the end of the regular season, muzzling their once ferocious offense.

In the final game against SJAM, the team scored its lowest

point total of the season (7) on a touchdown by Alex Weber.

“We lost some key players to injury,” Karn said, noting ailments to star tailback Alex White and starting quarterback Jordan Frey among others. “It’s sad in some ways that it ended the way it did, but there are lots of positives in terms of individual efforts.”

White for example, had a fourgame stretch where he scored 14 touchdowns, Karn said.

With strong, often punishing performances all season long, White and his backfield partner Weber have garnered attention from recruiters at the University of Waterloo, Karn added.

Passionate about football and high school athletics, Karn jump started the EDSS football program 10 years back.

“We were the only school in the county that didn’t have it,” he said. “It was time.”

A decade later, the love of football continues to grow in Elmira.

“We’ve always had good numbers and great support from the community,” Karn said. “The kids have really bought into it now, and it has become a 12 month thing. The guys come in and they’ve been working out during the off season and they are bigger and stronger and ready to go. And that means we are doing better.”

But it’s not all about the wins and losses, Karn said.

Favourite moment: In grade 10, we were down by 10 points against Grand River and I wasn’t starting on offense. In the last four minutes of the game, coach put me in for tail back and I got two touchdowns in a row in two plays and a kick-off.

Future plans: Hopefully get to play some football in university. I want to study mechanical engineering.

The following night the Kings hosted the Guelph Hurricanes at the Dan Snyder Memorial Arena.

Though the Kings had crushed the Hurricanes 5-0 just a week prior, this match proved much more difficult for the home side.

“I thought we played a little better on Sunday,” Flanagan said. “Our defensive side of the game wasn’t excellent (against Cambridge), so we talked about that before the game and I thought the guys responded well.”

The Kings gave up a power play goal to start the scoring in the first, but Kohli quickly tied it up with a power play goal from Wright and Clutsam. Klayton Hoelscher (Mutton, Brubacher) and Mutton (Seraphim, Kohli ) added a couple more to give the Kings a 3-1 lead heading into the second.

Guelph got one back in

the second, but surrendered another power play goal (Kohli from Wright and Clutsam) early in the third.

The visitors notched another at 12:36 in the final frame, but that was as close as they would get.

Woolwich Midget A team sweeps through Silver Stick in Owen Sound WHITNEY NEILSON The Woolwich Wildcats Minor Midget A team went undefeated this past weekend at the Owen Sound Regional Silver Stick Tournament and brought home gold.

The win is quite a change from how they started the season. Coach Mitch Metzger said they were 2-7 before the weekend.

“We started off really slow,” Metzger said. “Our first tournament of the year, we didn’t win a game.

It’s been a little rough.

Then we came into this tournament and it all came together.”

He said they bonded as a team by getting away for three days.

“Our team camaraderie and morale was really high and just kind of all worked together,” Metzger said, While some of the players have played together before they have a few new players including two out of town players and a couple players that have never played at the A level before.

“We’re definitely getting better game by game and practice by practice. Everything is just kind of getting better little bit by little bit.”

Their next tournament will be in Kingston at the

beginning of December.

The win earned them the right to participate in the North American Silver Stick Finals Tournament January 15-18 in Newmarket.

“It’ll be around the same competition as we had in the last tournament,” Metzger said.

There were seven teams in the tournament. They were undefeated in the round robin and were given a bye into the semi-finals because of their first place position. They defeated Owen Sound 4-0 in their first game of the tournament. It was followed by a 2-0 win over Whitby later that night. The next day

they overcame Barrie 3-2.

They beat Orangeville 3-0 in the semi-finals. To end the weekend they took out Barrie 3-1 in the finals to earn the top spot.

Their next games are against Hespeler on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Hespeler and on Sunday at 4:30 at the Woolwich Memorial Centre against Halton Hills. They previously beat Halton Hills 4-3 on November 10.

“We’re definitely hoping to win two more tournaments and be in the finals of the OMHA. With the group the way we are I think it’s huge for the confidence of our players,” Metzger said.

Gretta and Gary Kilpatrick’s decision to move their blind and drapery business to Elmira had a lot to do with Mother Nature. After a particularly nasty winter storm in February, it took Gretta an hour and a half to get home from work one day.

“I thought ‘oh my gosh I can’t do this every day,’” Gretta said. “We started looking and we found a great little place.”

The couple owns Blind Ambition, which they opened in 1985 in Milton.

They moved their business to Kitchener for 28 years, and now they’ve relocated to Elmira for the foreseeable future.

“We’d been in Kitchener a long time,” Gretta said.

“Travelling back and forth on the expressway started to become cumbersome.”

They also missed living in a small town and Elmira fit the bill. They moved in on May 1 and were overwhelmed with how welcoming everyone has been. She said they’ve established a really nice relationship with residents and are learning a lot about the different cultures.

“I feel that this is a great town for someone new because they have a smalltown attitude,” Gretta said.

“It’s welcoming, it’s very warm. I’ve got great clients already that I’ve just made friends with. What’s great is people here are willing to share information. My words are I’m not leaving.”

Gretta and Gary Kilpatrick have set up shop in Elmira after running Blind Ambition out of Kitchener for 28 years. but she said those plans have changed. They’re happy with having the one business in Elmira and don’t want to be running all over the region operating numerous locations.

Before starting the business Gretta worked a variety of jobs including at a bank, a dental office and the LCBO. She said the idea for the business came from Gary who was installing blinds for a friend in Milton.

“He was the one who encouraged me and when I first started I didn’t really have any knowledge on window coverings,” Gretta said. “Now we’ve grown not

into just doing blinds and drapery. We’ve evolved into many other things that I can offer. It’s really a nice broad range now.”

She said it’s turning into a very fun business.

They also offer paints, custom bedding, furniture shopping, solar control window film, and wallpaper. They’ve also done a couple of kitchen renovations including flooring and lighting.

“I don’t know that blinds and drapery were always my desire to have but I wanted to do something that I enjoy,” Gretta said.

joy working in their homes, I enjoy helping them with design ideas.”

She says she has a great team who helps her with different projects. When she needs someone to do flooring, she has someone to do the work. If she needs someone to do lighting, she’s got a person for that too.

“We built a nest of these different great trades, and I can rely on them,” Gretta said.

She did worry in the beginning that they might struggle to establish themselves in the community, but she needn’t have as they’ve worked with com-

“It has taught me some great life lessons,” Gretta said. “It’s given me an opportunity to have control of where I wanted to go in my life. Clocking in with somebody from 9 to 5 is really not what I wanted to do. It’s given me a huge opportunity to meet some fabulous people.”

entists at institutions such as the University of Guelph and elsewhere, as well as government and industry, farmers set their sights on growing the supply.

It was clear such a course of action would bring profits down, at some point.

But people who produce food sign up to feed people, not to watch them agonize over potential shortages.

The sector targeted more from less: squeezing more yield out of the same amount of land. The effort included growing varieties that were already well on their way to the market – thanks to visionary plant breeders who’ve long had their ears to the ground – as well as new varieties with

traits that addressed emerging diseases related to climate change and odd but persistent weather patterns.

The work may never be over. It takes years to develop new plant varieties. But some that were already in the pipeline are helping producers at least hold the line.

The upside of our global economy, at least from a hunger perspective, is that it’s unlikely everywhere, as in all around the world, is suffering from a poor harvest.

And that’s the way it is this year. Poor growing conditions in Ontario and on the prairies have led to lower than anticipated yields.

But globally, many are enjoying a huge crop.

Late last week, TD Economics took a crack at put-

ting this all in perspective.

It noted how the global bumper crop for grains had led to what it calls a “massive” harvest.

That’s good for shoring up food stocks. But as farmers know, it’s hammered crop prices. Most are now sitting at four-year lows, anywhere from 30-60 per cent below their 2012 peaks, says TD. And it’s a well-established fact that the opposite is true for livestock producers, where demand has outstripped supply.

The tables have turned, and instead of record lows, we’re seeing record highs.

Coupled with cheap grains prices, this is finally a chance for livestock producers to exhale.

How’s the public going

to take all this? In stride, I suspect, especially if agriculture takes this as an opportunity to do some public education about why profitable farms are actually a good thing.

Public tolerance or acceptance of rising prices is more likely when people don’t envision farmers lighting cigars with $100 bills. Of course, the truth is many producers grow crops too, so the gains made in livestock prices may be offset by the hit taken on crops.

But like the TD report suggests, one thing farmers are used to is change. Perhaps adaption to climate change is still a work in progress, but adaption to almost everything else is firmly in place.

“I don’t think I’m going to retire for a long, long time,” Gretta said. “I like this and I like doing what I do.”

The arts event, entitled Heighten the Contrast, runs November 21 and 22 and features music, dance, drama, and a juried art show. The focus of the show is to merge the different art disciplines.

Students from Woolwich and Wellesley who attend the Kitchener school for its integrated arts program have been eagerly prepar-

ing to show off their talents.

Kaelin Isserlin, a dance major from Elmira, says they have to submit three pieces to the gala each year, but he’s glad to participate.

“I really do it just to get myself out there, just to be able to show my art,” Isserlin said. “It’s a great experience, great for your resume.”

“It’s great because we’re part of a community that loves the arts,” Isserlin said. “I think being able to work with people who like what you’re doing and also the teachers help you get to know yourself.

I’ve learned so much about myself and my artistic abilities just being here.”

He added the gala is a good chance for curious students to see the kinds

of art they can pursue and improve upon through an arts program. The eleventh grader said he would have liked to have gone when he was in Grade 9.

Elliott said it’s great to be able to do what you love in an environment that supports you, and while she loves musical theatre she’s not sure what she wants to do after high school. She agrees with Isserlin that the gala could help expose potential students to what they could be studying.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for people to see what we’re actually doing with the extra stuff we have at this school,” Elliott said.

“Especially for kids to be aware that that’s an option because I didn’t know for the longest time there was a school that would help me do that, and there is.”

Rorai-McNeil would like to pursue music after high school like her brother did.

The Grade 9 student says she’s become a much more confident person in just

two months from singing in front of her vocal class, and she can already see improvement.

“It’s really cool to show people what we can do,” Rorai-McNeil said.

The gala will be held at ECI on November 21 and 22 at 7 p.m. There will also be a Saturday matinee at 1 p.m..

Tickets are $12 each. Tickets for the gala will be on sale November 17-19 from 2:305:30 p.m. at the school and then one hour before each show.

A badge of honour and courage Elmira man receives prestigious award from France for his service in the Second World War SCOTT BARBER From Juno Beach, through France, Belgium and Holland, Elmira’s Raymond Pond fought for Canada as a gunner in the 19th Canadian Army Field Regiment during the Second World War. Now, some 70 years later, Pond has been awarded the rank of Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, the most prestigious distinction bestowed by the government of France.

“Please allow me to express once more my most sincere congratulations on behalf of France and all my countrymen, regarding your nomination to the rank of Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, the highest of our national orders,” read a letter from Philippe Zeller, the ambassador of France to Canada to Pond. “As the Canadian authorities have already given their approval for your nomination, you can therefore proudly wear this insignia, which attests to your courage and your devotion to the ideals of liberty and peace.”

Humble but proud, Pond

is grateful for the acknowledgement.

“It’s wonderful that they finally thought of us after all that time,” he said as he sat with his wife Ruby at their kitchen table the day after Remembrance Day. Pond, now 94 years old, grew up in Millbank before moving to Elmira to pursue work as a mechanic in Kitchener.

But the war got in the way.

In October of 1941, at 21 years of age, he enlisted. After basic training and some time stationed at bases in Prince Rupert and Petawawa, he was shipped across the pond.

That’s where he met Ruby.

“When I met her, my buddy and I wanted to get out for the weekend but our trucks were all more or less corralled,” he recalled. “So my buddy says, ‘Ray, you got any money?’ And I said ‘yeah,’ and so he said, ‘I’ll get my truck out, just leave it to me.’”

Fortunately, they managed to get hold of a truck and onto the road for the 30-mile trip from their base in Bournemouth to Lee-onSolent, England.

This cold, rainy weather makes me think of comfort food. Last week I made a recipe that Mom used to make at home; it is called Sweet N’ Sour Stew on Rice.

It is especially good on a cold November evening.

This recipe calls for beef.

It is a shame that people think beef is bad for you, because it’s not. You don’t need to eat it every day. It is filled with B vitamins (good for brain function) and iron.

Back in the day – I won’t tell you how long ago that is – we ate beef several times a week. Mom would order a side of beef from whatever relative or neighbour was butchering an animal when our freezer needed replenishing. We would go pick up the meat at the butcher’s, neatly wrapped in butchers’ paper and sometimes even tied up with string.

There was lots of ground beef, roasts of all shapes and sizes, stewing beef and the tongue. Mom boiled the tongue for a few hours, took the skin off and cooled it. Then she sliced it, and it was amazingly tender. But I have not yet boiled a beef tongue for my own consumption.

Q. What does the University of California, Berkeley, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wellness Letterâ&#x20AC;? mean when it cautions, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Stay well! Better respect a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;hericaneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; as much as a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;himicaneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;?â&#x20AC;? Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let such stormy, if nominal, sexism blow you away.

A. According to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,â&#x20AC;? people tend to perceive female-named storms as less of a threat and thus become more susceptible to their deadly consequences, the newsletter reports. When researchers looked at 92 strong

home was a weekly occurrence. Mom put it into the oven early in the morning covered with sliced onion in the black granite roast pan. Mid-morning she would put whole, raw potatoes into the pan beside the roast. The broth covered the potatoes so when they were cooked they were golden and delicious.

Sometimes she put raw carrot pieces in there, too.

They were the best. And the gravy ... there are no words to describe the gravy you can make with broth like that. To this day, after all the roast beef I have cooked, Mom’s is the best.

1/4 cup flour 1 tsp salt Few dashes of pepper 2 lbs stewing beef 1/4 cup oil 1 cup water 1/2 cup ketchup 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup vinegar 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 onion, chopped 5 carrots, sliced Hot cooked rice

Combine meat, salt, pepper and flour.

Heat oil in frying pan; add the meat and cook over med-high heat until meat is browned.

Add water, ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and onion.

Cover and cook over low heat for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add sliced carrots; cook 45 minutes more or until carrots are tender.

Serve over rice or mashed potatoes.

Serves 4-6 people.

“When we got to the dancehall we met (Ruby) and her sister (Peg),” he said. “So we got hooked up.”

Ruby, an English girl, was working in the British Land Army in the area, working the fields.

They shared the last two dances of the night, Pond remembers, and decided to keep in touch.

It wasn’t easy though, as Pond was shipped off soon thereafter with his regiment across the English Channel as part of the largest military operation in history, D-Day. “We were loaded and shipped over in a huge ship with an open front end and a ramp, but otherwise the ship was enclosed,” Pond said. “Our guns sat in open craft and they started firing from the water right over our troops as we were landing. They were firing over our heads trying to knock out the enemy troops.”

He continued, “Of course, Hitler kind of got surprised by us and he didn’t have as much artillery there as he might have had. So we were fortunate that way, but it was bad enough.”

An ammunition hauler, Pond was responsible for transporting shells and rounds from the ammunition dumps to the artillery positions.

It was a dangerous job.

“My truck was hit,” he said, remembering a close call he had in Germany.

“I had made it all the way through with just a few scrapes here and there, but two months before the end of the war (March, 1945) my truck finally got hit.”

Luckily, Pond was behind the vehicle digging a foxhole when the shell landed.

“It missed us, my buddy and I, and actually, (the truck) saved our lives because it was right in line with where we were at the time,” Pond said.

“All of a sudden three shells came over and it was likely a mortar shell, which

aren’t very big, but they are big enough to burn up anything. One landed quite a ways out and the next landed nearby so we got up and ran like the devil.”

Everything he had was in that truck, he recalled, and virtually everything was lost to the flames.

But one very special item remained.

“When the fire was over we went around to see what was left of the truck,” he said. “Inside the tailgate of the truck, the old army trucks had tailgates that came down on chains, and I could reach up. We wouldn’t dare go up on that vehicle when it had ammunition on it, because you don’t know what you could touch that might set it off. So I reached up and there was a hat badge.

The hat was burned to the dickens, of course, but the badge was laying there and I couldn’t believe it.”

The badge had been passed down to Pond from his father, who served in the artillery during the First World War. Just a few months later, Pond was back in England (Germany surrendered May 7, 1945) marrying Ruby.

He shipped off back to Canada, and she followed a year later with the couple’s baby daughter Julyan in tow.

They’ve been in Elmira ever since, where Raymond worked as a mechanic at Uniroyal and the couple raised two kids.

And their family continues to grow, with grandchildren and great-grandchildren across the region, all whom had an extra reason to be proud this week.
