Two new candidates toss their hats in for Wellesley’s Ward 4 WILL SLOAN The Wellesley municipal election has its first non-incumbent candidates. Carl Smit and Brian A. Cunningham have announced their candidacy for the Ward 4 council seat vacated by Paul Hergott, who is running for mayor.

Smit, a St. Clements resident and retired police officer, served on the Wellesley and District Optimist Club for 20 years, was an executive member of St. Clements Minor Hockey (now Twin Centre), and has coached soccer and baseball in the township.

Running for council has been a longheld ambition, he said.

“It was probably 10 years ago. We were sitting at an Optimist meeting, and I just mentioned that I was going to run for council when I retired.

Paul Hergott was one of the guys, and I said, ‘Why don’t you run right now?

You’re not working.’ So he did, and he’s two terms in.

Kennel approved after much back-and-forth by Woolwich council STEVE KANNON Woolwich council has been as fickle as a dog picking out just the right tree, but it appears a Maryhill-area man may finally be able to go ahead with building a kennel.

Councillors have been vacillating for months over

Robert Varga’s bid to operate a 50-dog boarding kennel at 1183 Bietz Rd. Again this week, they were all over the map before finally giving clearance for the desired number of dogs and toning down on the request for noise studies.

Noise issues were the largest stumbling block in

the previous discussions, with Varga convincing councillors the site is wellremoved from neighbouring properties, with the surrounding forest and a hill acting as a buffer between the location and nearby Maryhill. Likewise, there’s a berm between his property and the neigh-

bouring Bridgeport Rod & Gun Club, itself a source of noise. As well, there’s another kennel close by and a well-used baseball diamond that generates more noise than anything else in the area, he said.

Although bylaw staff recommended the township turn down Varga’s

request, council sided with the applicant. Staff’s latest attempt to stifle the plan called for a graduated licensing scheme starting with 25 dogs. The report also recommended a noise impact analysis before licensing and another study at a later date.

fenroth, the noise studies, estimated at $5,000 to $10,000 each, seemed like an excessive requirement.

“I’m really not worried about the noise,” added Coun. Julie-Anne Herteis, noting Varga has “done his homework.”

Wellesley Idol gears up for another Woolwich adds West Montrose homes year highlighting local talent WILL SLOAN Many aspiring singers have dreamed of following in the footsteps of Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, and, to a lesser extent, Justin Guarini. Few, however, relish the prospect of proving their mettle in front of Randy, Paula, Simon, or whoever is currently occupying their chairs.

But for the local teenage song-stylist, there is an option closer to home. The Wellesley ABC Idol competition is back for another round, and hoping to find the best and brightest teenage musicians in the rural townships.

Even if you don’t become the next Taylor Hicks, 2013 winner Amy Rola says there’s plenty to gain from the competition.

“I got a lot of really good feedback – not only the feedback they gave me, but what they said to the other contestants,” said Rola. “I took that and I used it to grow as a performer.”

Rola, a 16-year-old singer-songwriter and current member of KW Glee, believes the program offers a unique opportunity. “I don’t really get feedback like that often. At school, you’ve got math teachers, science teachers, but where’s the songwriting teacher?”

Last year was Rola’s second in the competition – she was the second-place finisher in 2012 after Gavin

“I hope they get some self-confidence to know that they’re good,” said organizer Wendy Richardson.

“Even the ones who don’t go on to the next level, the judges put on a workshop giving them tips and comments to improve, and where their strengths are.”

In addition to self-confidence, lucky contestants could be in for prizes. First, second, and third-place winners receive $500, $300, and $200, and a People’s Choice winner (voted at the Wellesley Fall Fair) will take $125.

The cultural heritage landscape (CHL) surrounding the West Montrose covered bridge now encompasses several properties in the vicinity, as Woolwich council this week added them to the municipal heritage register.

Properties at 5, 12 and 42 Covered Bridge Dr.; 245 Hill St.; 1118 Letson Dr.; 1060, 1238, 1239 and 1242 River’s Edge Dr.; and the private buggy bridge at 1051 Buggy Lane were listed for their “character defining attributes.”

This week’s decision puts more meat on the bones of the CHL designation approved in 2011, providing an extra layer of protection for the area’s historic character, in some instances requiring a heritage study prior to development within the lands of the CHL. The area covers some 1,670 acres bounded by Northfield Drive to the west, Line 86 to the north, Katherine Street to the east and an irregular line to the south to a point beyond a line extending from Maryhill Road. Along with the bridge and older homes in the immediate vicinity, the CHL designation encompasses the surrounding environment and views that makes up the historical context of the structure.

and planning Dan Kennaley was quick to point out at Tuesday night’s meeting of council that inclusion on the heritage list is not the same as heritage designation, which provides for stricter controls. In this case, inclusion on the list basically provides the township with some leeway – an extra 60 days – should the property owner request a demolition permit.

Essentially, it gives the municipality time to look at whether a building should be protected if there’s a move to tear it down, he explained.

Coun. Mark Bauman said he sees this process as moving down a path that puts restrictions on property owners, a theme he’s raised repeatedly over the years when heritage issues have been raised.

“This is the start of the slippery slope."

Coun. Julie-Anne Herteis raised similar concerns about restrictions on homeowners doing renovations to their properties.

Kennaley, however, said the heritage list is nothing like the sometimes onerous restrictions of heritage designations, which can impose a whole host of limitations.

“They are two completely different things,” he maintained.

Heidelberg park building condemned Having fallen into disrepair, the field house in Heidelberg Community Park has now been condemned.

A recent inspection found already propped-up walls in worse condition, a leaking roof and widespread mold, director of recreation and facilities Karen Makela told Woolwich councillors this week.

The village’s recreation association has already started raising funds for a

new building, estimated at $210,000.

A new facility would be an equipment room and field house, with the possibility of a meeting room for small events. Woolwich typically looks for the community to put up a third of the cost. To that end, the association has approached Wellesley council – the borderline between the townships splits the village – to support its efforts.

Putting their skills to the test After two days battling it out at the Ontario Technological Skills Competi-

tion in Waterloo, some local residents came away with medals.

Stephen Greydanus of Elmira won gold in Individual Carpentry. He is currently a student at Conestoga College and will heading to the national competition in June.

Brady Erb of Elmira won gold in Heating Systems Technician. He is a student at Elmira District Secondary School. He was also awarded a monetary prize.

Jayden Weber, Lukas Konig, Noah Reitzel, and Zach Horst of EDSS won bronze in Home and Team Building – teams of four.

Tom Martin of Elmira won gold in Sheet Metal. He is currently a student

at Mohawk College and will be heading to the national competition in June.

Paving projects on tap for Woolwich

Wellesley Township will hold a public meeting on June 2 to discuss a proposed bicycle sales and repair business at 8092 Line 86.

The business owner has applied for official plan and zoning bylaw amendments to allow the business to operate from a detached garage in a property designated “settlement residential.”

The meeting will take place 6:45 p.m. at council chambers, 4805 William

Coco Paving Inc. will carry out paving work worth $581,000 in Woolwich this year, having been awarded a tendered contract by councillors meeting May 6.

Roads scheduled to see work done this construction season include Cedar Waxwing Drive, Nuthatch Place, Park Avenue East, Snyder Avenue North and Wyatt Street West in Elmira; St. Boniface Drive in Maryhill; Chalmers Street,

Holmwood Drive, Meadowbrook Place and Short Street, in Winterbourne.

Recently reconstructed roads – Ernst Street in Elmira, St. Charles Street, Isley Drive and Notre Dame Avenue in Maryhill – will get a second layer of asphalt over the base course.

As the winning bid came in under budget, the township opted to expand the list to include Phoebe Crescent in Elmira at a cost of $38,000.

Body of New Hamburg 5-year-old boy found in Nith River The body of a five-yearold New Hamburg boy who went missing in December was found in the Nith River Tuesday Over the noon hour, a private search group of two people, including an off-duty Waterloo Regional Police officer, observed the body of a child in the river near the community of Haysville. The coroner’s office joined the process, confirming the body was that of Robbie Reiner who was reported missing by his family on December 26 and

was believed to have fallen through the ice on the river.

Police and emergency services partners conducted an extensive search of the river area in the days immediately following the boy’s disappearance. The search was suspended as severe winter weather conditions set in.

As conditions improved this spring, several searches were also conducted, police report.

A post mortem was to be conducted in Hamilton to determine the cause of death.

Elmira egg processor cleared for expansion Council's decision allows Global Egg Corp. to build addition, acquire more land off of Oriole Parkway STEVE KANNON

An Elmira egg processor got the green light this week for expansion plans that will add another 25 jobs to the operation.

Woolwich council’s approval of Global Egg’s zone change application clears the way for the company to build an addition linking two neighbouring properties at 109 and 115 Bonnie Cr. That would join the two structures, effectively turning the existing 22,600 and 5,200-square-foot buildings into one 38,000-sq.-ft. facility.

At a public meeting

held last October to discuss the plans, the most frequent concern raised involved odour problems at the plant. The operation, which processes eggs into egg-white, yolks, specialty mixes and other products, has been the source of odour complaints in the past.

The company said the odour is due to eggs broken at another site sitting for a day or two before being delivered and processed in Elmira. With the operation under one roof – the Global Egg hopes to move the eggbreaking operation from its plant in Etobicoke – the

eggs would be broken, processed and dried in short order, greatly reducing the chance of odours.

Dan Kennaley, the township’s director of engineering and planning, said concerns about odour and dust have been addressed by the applicant in discussions since the public meeting.

Planning staff contacted their counterparts in Abbotsford, BC, which as a plant similar to Global Egg’s operation. That community reports no complaints about odour related to the business.

More recently, the company has dealt with parking

issues – the addition on the small site would eliminate most of the current space – by arranging to purchase from Terramar Investments a 2.5-acre piece of vacant land on Oriole Parkway, opposite the rear of the plant.

Scott Brookshaw, vicepresident of operations for L.H. Gray and Sons, said purchasing the land would allow the company to move the egg dryer farther away from its Bonnie Crescent neighbours.

In the same vein, construction would be contained to Oriole Parkway to minimize impact on the other businesses.

Truck traffic on Bonnie Crescent would be reduced, as shipping and receiving would be moved to the back of the new building, with access from Oriole Parkway.

Currently, there’s an average of three trucks delivering materials to the plant each day, with one truck outbound with product.

With the expansion, those numbers would increase to seven and three, respectively.

Acquiring the land allows the company to drop its original parking plan to lease space to create 64 spots on a piece of vacant

land at nearby 90 Union St. That idea raised concerns about crossing busier Union Street and the lack of sidewalks in the vicinity, with employees having to make their way to and from the offsite location.

Coun. Mark Bauman, who said he had many concerns about the project, said they’d been addressed by the staff report and talking with Global’s planner.

“You’ve basically solved all of the issues.”

Brookshaw said the company hopes to have the work completed by December, allowing for the creation of at least 25 new jobs.

While Coun. Mark Bauman favoured more noise studies in order to mitigate future complaints and starting with 25 dogs, his colleagues sided with the applicant’s request.

Varga argued the entire business model is based on 50 dogs, with the sizeable investment needed to build the facility contingent on those revenues.

Many of the costs, including tens of thousands of

dollars in government fees and permits, would be fixed regardless of the size, with building for the 50 dogs maximizing the economies of scale.

He and his wife aren’t fans of barking dogs, and they’ll be living right there, so it’s in their interest to keep it quiet, he added.

His plans call for the kennel building itself to be constructed with twice the required insulation levels, bringing them up to resi-

dential standards, so noise from inside the facility would not carry very far.

As it stands, the neighbours aren’t up in arms over the proposal, said Varga.

Woolwich clerk Christine Broughton said the township has received one written letter of concern and three phone calls related to the kennel application. None of those people turned up at council meetings give voice to their concerns.

That explanation somewhat mollified the lone homeowner to raise concerns about the process.

Rivers Edge Drive resident Brian Hendrick said he worried that inclusion on the list would lead to further restrictions, limiting what owners could do and

negatively impacting property values.

“We really aren’t excited about the next level,” he said of the potential for designation under the Heritage Act. Kennaley said that would not be the case.

“There won’t be a slippery slope in this instance.”

Woolwich looks to extend sanitary sewers in Breslau core Planners hope reduced costs to property owners entice them to help with goal of spurring commercial development STEVE KANNON Rebuffed in previous efforts to extend water and sanitary sewers to the older parts of Breslau, Woolwich officials want another kick at the can.

This time, however, they’re dangling a discount rate and the prospect of an actual downtown core as incentives.

Some 25 property owners on parts of Woolwich and Dolman streets will be approached for feedback on a plan to install sanitary sewer lines in conjunction with a new watermain and road reconstruction.

Unlike a 2010 attempt, for instance, that saw homeowners each facing the prospect of a $92,000 price tag for water and sewers, this time around the bill for a smaller subset of residents would be $11,200.

The extension of water services is being paid for by developers, as a loop must be completed as part of the work in a neighbouring new subdivision. As well, the township is proposing to cover 42 per cent of the total cost of the sanitary sewers, with the benefitting property owners paying for the rest.

The township would use money from its development charges fund to cover its share, citing the development potential that would follow the extension of full municipal services to properties now using wells and septic systems.

Director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley told councillors meeting Tuesday night in Breslau that the 42 per cent figure reflects how many of the 25 properties could see redevelopment if serviced.

At a total cost of $483,000 for the sanitary sewers, the cost to benefitting residents would drop to $280,140 once the township portion was subtracted. Divided by 25, the cost per property comes to $11,200. Each of the property owners would have to pay for the laterals to connect to the sanitary sewer, said Kennaley.

The properties in question are on Woolwich Street South, between Hopewell Creek bridge and Dolman Street; and on Dolman Street, between Woolwich and Joseph streets.

Under a planning study now underway in the village – the Breslau secondary plan – the township envisions the creation of a downtown core, a central hub in the community that has never had one. Despite a huge growth in the number of homes, there’s been no commercial development.

“The properties along this street will have a new village main street designation intended to support and strengthen the main street role of Woolwich Street as a focal point for the community, as well as a draw for tourists and visitors,” reads the report submitted to council this week.

“This designation will also provide local commercial opportunities for retail, cultural, professional offices and entertainment, and will accommodate a certain level of residential intensification, while at the same time encouraging the re-use and conversion of existing buildings to protect the residential look and feel of the street.”

The lone councillor to sit through a succession of sometimes angry battles over servicing Breslau, Mark Bauman said he was

hesitant to get involved again in that debate. Given the opportunity available with the other construction and the lowered cost, residents might be more receptive.

“I think it’s a great idea.

I think it should go to the public,” he said, adding “$11,200 is a bargain” at less than half the cost of a new septic system.

Coun. Allan Poffenroth, the only one to vote against moving ahead to discuss the installation of sanitary sewers, said the use of de-

velopment charges to offset costs could set a dangerous precedent. Others facing big bills for the extension of services might well ask for similar relief.

Acknowledging that this would be “kind of a precedent,” Kennaley noted there are few other spots that would have the kind of redevelopment potential seen in the core of Breslau.

Breslau to weigh Woolwich's latest servicing gambit UNDETERRED BY PAST FAILURES or a glutton for punishment, Woolwich is taking another kick at the can in trying to get the older parts of Breslau on municipal services.

Past efforts have been rebuffed, partly over onerous costs that would be borne by residents, and partly over a desire to pay large sums of money only to pay exorbitant monthly charges for water and sewer fees. And let’s not overlook some good old-fashioned distrust of township officials.

Still, with some major reconstruction work soon to get started, Woolwich hopes a small group of property owners will agree to have sanitary sewers installed at the same time.

Since planners see the potential for redevelopment on almost half of the 25 lots involved, they’ve recommended dipping into the township’s development charges fund to cover 42 per cent of the costs. With the developers of an adjoining new subdivision picking up the cost of installing a watermain, the owners of those 25 properties would be able to tap into full municipal services at a big discount.

The township hopes that’s enough to entice interest rather than incite the kind negative feedback past attempts have earned.

That remains to be seen. Behind many stories involving Breslau residents is a lingering dissatisfaction with the community’s place in the township. There’s no secessionist movement, but there’s almost always an undercurrent of playing second fiddle to other settlements in Woolwich, particularly Elmira and St. Jacobs.

This sentiment was apparent in each outbreak of speeding and traffic concerns on Woolwich Street. It showed up in the run-up to the construction of the new community centre.

And again in the installation of municipal water in the Elroy Acres subdivision. Then came the issues of some wells in the old centre of town running dry in 2007 and subsequent attempts to move people to municipal water and sewers, at costs exceeding $100,000 per household.

In previous debates about servicing, residents told councillors in no uncertain terms that they felt they were being treated as second-class citizens, overlooked and underserved. Why, some asked, could council find $23 million for a new recreation complex in Elmira, but provide nothing for essential services in Breslau? Why turn the full cost over to homeowners when other municipalities were getting infrastructure money for just this kind of thing?

Not overnight did the people here come to the conclusion Woolwich council, meeting regularly away north in Elmira, is an uncaring bunch.

It’s easy for people in the south end, so far away from the municipal government in Elmira, to feel somewhat alienated. As the village continues to grow – quadrupling in size to become the second largest settlement area – so too will its demands for more attention Real or imagined, the slights over the years reached a head with the debates over water and sewers.

It’s in that context that the latest foray into servicing will be received. Perhaps the property owners involved will see this as the deal the township thinks it is, moving to take advantage of the offer. Perhaps not.

There can be denying the fact, however, that Breslau lacks the kind of core area other communities its size enjoy.

Putting some of those Woolwich Street South and Dolman Street properties on full services increases the potential for commercial ventures that could start to transform the area, providing the shops, services and offices associated with a downtown core. There are no guarantees, but perhaps enough of the property owners will see the possibilities.

With the coming closure of the well-used transfer station, residents finally find a use for the bus: if it doesn't move people, it can move trash to the landfill site in Waterloo.

In the debate over Israel, it's apartheid by any other name WORLD AFFAIRS Hillary Clinton would never have used the word when she was U.S. Secretary of State, because she still has presidential ambitions. John Kerry, the current Secretary of State, has no further ambitions in that direction, which may be why he dared to use the words “apartheid” and “Israel” in the same sentence.

Or maybe he just didn’t realize that the world would hear about it.

Kerry spoke last month to a group of high-ranking officials from the U.S., Europe and Japan known as the Trilateral Commission about the failure of his year-long attempt to revive the “peace talks” between Israel and the Palestinians.

Somebody at the meeting secretly recorded his comments, which were published by the Daily Beast, and suddenly he was in very hot water.

What he said was that the long-sought “two-state solution” was the only real alternative to a “unitary”

Israeli-ruled state that included all the territory between the Jordan river and the Mediterranean Sea – and ruled over millions of Palestinians in the territories that have been under Israeli military occupation since 1967.

Those Palestinians, most of whom cannot remember a time when they did not live under Israeli control, have no political rights within Israel. The two-state solution, under negotiation off and on for the past 20 years, would give them a state of their own, but most people had despaired some time ago of getting Israel to agree to an independent Palestine.

Kerry had not, so he was surprised and disappointed when his efforts came to naught. That was why he blurted out the truth that American politicians are never supposed to acknowledge. He said that without the two-state solution, “a unitary [Israeli] state winds up either being an apartheid state with second-class [Palestinian] citizens – or it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state.”

It was clumsily phrased, but the basic idea is common in both Israeli and Palestinian political discourse. Even if Israel never formally annexes the occupied territories, it has been building Jewish settlements all over them for decades, and the Palestinian inhabitants are effectively controlled by the Israeli government.

If this situation continues indefinitely, and the Palestinians must live out their lives as mere residents without no political rights, then they are in the same position as the black South Africans who lived all their lives under white rule without citizenship or the vote. That was the very essence of apartheid.

Alternatively, of course, Israel might grant them citizenship and the vote: that’s what happened when apartheid ended in South Africa in 1994. But there are already a great many Palestinians living under Israeli rule, and their higher birth rate would make them a majority in that “unitary” Israel in less than a generation. That might or might not be a state where Jews were happy to live,

but it would definitely no longer be a Jewish state.

That’s all Kerry was saying: if you don’t accept the two-state solution then willy-nilly you get the one-state solution, in one of two flavours – an apartheid state in which the great majority of the actual citizens are Jews and the Palestinians have no voice in how they are ruled, or a more broadly defined state in which everybody is a citizen but Jews are no longer the majority.

Many Israeli senior politicians who favour the two-state solution, including former prime ministers Ehud Olmert and Ehud Barak, have made exactly this point, even using that same inflammatory word, “apartheid,” to underline the gravity of the choice.

Senior Palestinian politicians talk about it all the time. But senior American politicians are not allowed to talk like that about Israel.

The real issues aren't part of the discussion heading into an election EDITOR'S NOTES There’s likely no point in expecting any big-picture thinking on display in the provincial election now underway.

We’ve already been subjected to the usual sloganeering and sound bites.

The Liberals and Conservatives, surprisingly neck and neck, attempt to paint each other as the bogeyman.

Much of the debate, such as it is, centers on taxes and would-be economic fixes. The topics are the subject of short-term thinking, an affliction that’s permeated all facets of our society. Adopting the business model that’s taken hold in the last three decades – today’s stock price, shareholder value and this quarter’s profits above all else – our political system has been shaped by constant lobbying from those who see society through only the lens of finances. It’s what’s made citizens no more

than consumers.

Politicians, of course, have a built-in capacity for short-term thinking: the election cycle. They make promises and float policies designed for immediate impact – spend for votes today. That’s problematic in and of itself, as it gives little regard to the idea that actions taken now will have impacts years, sometimes decades down the road.

Making matters much worse, however, is the equally troubling issue of taxation. The promises they make come with a price, but 30 years of neoconservative lobbying and influence have made taxes a four-letter word, meaning many politicians will try to win votes by promising to spend today while simultaneously pledging to cut taxes. That often means deficits, a situation that’s ideal for politicians intent only on re-election: the bill won’t come due until later, when they’re off living comfortably on gold-plated government pensions.

That kind of thinking is what got us into today’s

from ‘my’ enjoyment.

Increasingly, we’re encouraged to give rein to our natural tendency to look after number one. Couple that with an individual’s capacity to seek immediate gratification, and long-term planning for our collective future becomes even more difficult.

There’s nothing wrong with looking out for personal interests, but we’re in danger of forgetting that most of the middle-class gains of the postwar years stem from socially-driven ideas. In purely economic terms, the collective efforts are the rising tide that lifted all boats – some more so than others, certainly. Today, however, there’s an element that seems hell-bent on undoing precisely the conditions that allowed for the great prosperity now under attack.

Thanks to decades of concerted effort, many people have bought into a set of diminished expectations about the role of government and, more troublingly, the possibilities of shaping a better society. We’ve had

democracy reduced to the occasional trip to the polls.

We’ve seen government reduced to managerial functions, where debate is constrained to a few wellworn topics. We’ve seen the economy reduced to fiscal policy – deregulation’s the order of the day as the financial services industry sets the agenda.

We’ve seen citizenship dumbed down to passive observation, at best.

Fewer of us bother to vote, let alone take an interest in elections. Far fewer still look past the slogans and latest complaints. But if we’re going to have a better society we need to think about the future 10, 20, 50 and 100 years down the line. The road we’ve been on for the last three decades, driven by the neoconservative corporate agenda, has diminished our quality of life. We have to look past dubious vote-buying programs, immediate tax cuts

and partisanship.

Long-term thinking is not just for issues such as climate change, though we’re not prepared to tackle even that issue, despite the consequences.

No, it’s all about living for today. But long-term planning is crucial for a host of issues that are clearly part of today’s political reality, encompassing all levels: long-term resource consumption, human migration, transportation demands, retirement and pensions and the like. Our failure to do so has led to rampant consumerism, environmental crises, unchecked immigration, urban sprawl, financial speculation and a host of other ills that plague our economic, political and social systems.

It’s those issues we should be mindful of in making a decision June 12, even if no one is talking about them out on the hustings.

mess. That the very people who supported tax cuts to corporations even as government largesse filled their coffers are the ones leading the charge for austerity measures – not to themselves, of course – has been lost in the shuffle.

In the course of a couple of generations, we’ve undone centuries of efforts to create a society based on the common good. Much of the we’re-all-in-thistogether ideals that came out of the Great Depression and the Second World War, for instance, have been replaced by relentless individualism.

Rapid urbanization whereby we no longer rely on family, friends and the broader community – indeed, we may not even know our neighbours – makes us forget just how interdependent we really are. A consumer-based society, pushed by marketing, focuses on individual pleasure. This comes at a cost to the collective ‘us,’ especially when discussing matters of financing the common good: taxes are seen as taking money away

Zionist organizations grew the Obama administration realized that Kerry had to be forced to apologize for speaking the truth. The story that they took him down into the White House basement and beat him with rubber hoses is probably untrue, but eventually he recanted his heresy.

“I do not believe,” Kerry said, “nor have I ever stated, publicly or privately, that Israel is an apartheid state or that it intends to become one.”

Well, of course not. It’s not an apartheid state now because the non-citizen status of the Palestinians for the past 47 years is

technically only temporary, pending the creation of their own state.

And Israel has no intention of ever meeting the technical definition of an apartheid state, either, because that would be a public-relations disaster.

However, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu seems convinced that he can avoid that outcome simply by hanging on to the occupied territories indefinitely but never formally annexing them, and many Israelis agree with him.

They might even be right, but John Kerry doesn’t think so. Or at least, he didn’t until his own people worked him over a bit.

This weekend, I took a break from my normal outdoorsy activities to pickle some wild leeks. No, I was not pickled at the time.

I was remembering last fall, when an uninvited salesman visited to re-evaluate my home electricity bills. He represented himself as being from Hydro, which he clearly was not.

I’m not normally a mean person, but situations like this turn me ugly. Even so, I tried to be merciful at first.

I merely interrupted his boring sales pitch and started in with one of my own.

I started telling him a squirrel hunting story.

Why? Because a squirrel hunting story possesses a special brand of crazy that most people just can’t wrap their minds around – especially when you tell them you spend hours sitting alone in the woods, with a squirrel call in hand, trying to lure in enough eastern grey squirrels to concoct a hearty stew.

This year’s event, its fourth as part of Woolwich Healthy Communities Month, gives supporters of the ‘G2G Rail Trail’ a chance to celebrate the fruits of the labour, while also looking ahead to the future.

“This is kind of a turning point for the event,” said organizer Doug Cerson.

“The whole event was designed to raise awareness and funds to build bridges and connect communities. … This year, our focus is really on celebrating the installation of the Millbank Bridge and some of the trail improvement on the west end.”

The $65,000 bridge east of Millbank, to be unveiled on Saturday, will mark the

completion of the fundraiser’s most ambitious project yet. In Woolwich Township, hikers and bikers will be able to use a new, $20,000 staircase connecting the trail with higher-elevation roadway (on Katherine Street, north of Line 86).

The group does not plan to rest on its laurels.

Later this months, a deal is expected on a lease for

the trail section that cuts through Perth – either by Perth County or a private leaser – which would expand the trail from 45km to 127km. The organization also plans to make infrastructure improvements, notably to three bridges over the Conestogo, Grand, and Maitland rivers.

“It would allow us to have a 127 kilometre con-

tinuous trailway where you would never have to get off the trail and share a road.

That’s not done anywhere else in the province, let alone other parts of the country.”

salesman in question folds up his clipboard, admits he’s not representing whoever he initially implied he was, and sprints off. He might even quit the business altogether.

Come to think of it, I haven’t had any salesmen return since that incident.

So, I guess they tell others too.

I never rest on my laurels, however. Nor do I like

to get caught off guard. I fully expect that this year, another sales person will knock on my door and he will have been trained to withstand at least 45 minutes of squirrel hunting stories – which is something even I can’t do.

Hence, the pickled wild leeks.

I’m thinking, if this current round of clinical trials work out, I’ll have weaponsgrade leeks by the middle

of next week.

This is not something to be taken lightly. With great power, after all, comes great responsibility. But, believe me, I will use them if another door-to-door salesman comes knocking.

I swear it.

The way I imagine it, as soon as I get an unfamiliar knock on the door, I’ll peek out from behind the curtains and look for the clipboard and clip-on tie.

Once that’s confirmed, I’ll open the door a bit and casually mention something about squirrel hunting. If that sales person doesn’t sprint, I’ll ask them to wait a second.

This will give me enough time to run to the cupboard, break the “In case of emergency” glass and pull out my jar of leeks. Then, having gauged the salesperson’s size, I’ll eat the appropriate amount before

opening the door.

For a salesperson under 6 feet and 200 pounds, I think one or two leeks will probably provide enough deterrent. For one bigger than that, I’ll likely need two and a half to send them on their way. If they send one even bigger, say around 300 pounds or more, I’ll mention that I’m hard of hearing and request the person to come closer so I can hear the sales pitch

more clearly. For those unfamiliar with pickled leeks, three is enough to move a grizzly bear off an elk carcass.

It’s cruel, I know.

But the way I see it, these people will finally understand I mean business. And who would blame me?

Heck, all I’m looking to do is stop visits from dishonest salesmen. And, when that happens, I’ll finally breathe easy.

Way oversaw the team during a landmark year when the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League merged with its equivalent league from Niagara District. It was a year that brought mixed results, with the Jacks placing fifth out of nine teams in the regular season (with a 19-17-3 record) and falling in the first round of playoffs.

A player for the Cornwall Royals, Hamilton Steel Hawks, Belleville Bulls, and the Windsor Spitfires in the ‘80s, Wilkinson last served as a Junior-level assistant coach for the Cambridge Winter Hawks in 1999. More recently, family commitments kept him to coaching Cambridge Minor Hockey, but now he has the time for higher-level hockey, he says.

“I’m looking forward to

getting back with the older kids, coaching, and doing the best I can to help all the kids become better,” said Wilkinson.

“I like to bring structure, I like to bring discipline, and leadership. I’m just here to help them become better hockey players – I just want to make them a better team. It was their first year of Junior C last year, and I want to build on that.”

“He brings an experience that we quite frankly have never had in coaching, particularly with his playing background,” said Fitzpatrick. “In his coaching background, he was an assistant coach with Cambridge when they were a very successful organization. He’s got such a calm, confident demeanor to him.”

Fitzpatrick continued, “I’m very excited. It’s one step closer to going to the next level that we need to take as an organization. …

I think a lot of organiza-

tions wanted him, and for whatever reason, lucky for us, he chose to apply to Wellesley.”

One of Wilkinson’s strongest points was his familiarity with the team, said Fitzpatrick.

“He came with some pretty interesting questions about our team. One of his first questions was, ‘Why are you so successful on the road and not so successful at home, whereas in years past you’d dominated at home?’ He’d done his homework, and he was familiar with the players.”

Looking forward to next year, Way offers some advice to the new coach: “Continue to build off what we have. We had a great team last year that lasted to Game 7 against a very good Norwich team. There’s a tremendous nucleus there, there’s tremendous community support … and we’ve continually watched this program get better and better.”

“This route, spanning from Guelph to Goderich, anyone can ride it – young, old, it doesn’t really matter,” said Cerson.

“Whether you’re a hard rider or a recreational rider, you can ride this, and it’s very, very safe. You can spend 5, 10, 15 kilometres at a time when all you’re doing is crossing the gated roads. You don’t have to look over your shoulder to see if junior is sliding out into the road, or driving into that car door. You can ride side-by-side with your family.”

As always, Cerson hopes the event will encourage people to take advantage of the trail all year long.

“If you have any aspirations of being an outdoor enthusiast and you’re looking to get on your bike and go to Lake Huron, this trail would take you all the way there. You pop out into a beautiful vista from the Medicine Tongue Bridge, and you’re looking at Lake Huron.”

Gymnasts pile up the medals to end their season Woolwich club puts on a strong showing at final tournaments in Milton and London WILL SLOAN The Woolwich Gymnastics Club is packing it in for another year, but not before filling up its trophy case.

In its two most recent tournament, the girls’ competitive team enjoyed strong results. At the Milton Springer Challenge, April 11-14, the girls brought home nine gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals. They followed it up with another good showing at the Emerald Cup Invitational in London on May 3-4.

Head coach Maria Code cites the London tournament as a highlight on the calendar “This is the last competition for all the girls to participate in, and they always look forward to this meet because it’s fun. All their hard work throughout the

year pays off, and it showed this weekend. We had great placing, came home with a ton of medals, and showed how hard the girls worked.”

It all comes down to one little word, she says: “Practice, practice, practice.

You’ve got to practice how you compete: have good form, work hard, and try your best every time you go to the gym.”

There were plenty of gold medals to go around at the London tourney. Six won gold in the floor category (Jordyn Kelly, Julia Ersil, Allison Saulesleja, Morgan Hanley, Natalie Mayer, Julia Code); three on beam (Trinity Barnes, Madelyn Halstead, Julia Code), one on bars (Natalie Mayer), and two for vault (Mackenzie Simpson, Morgan Hanley).

Silver medals went to two for floor (Alex Kirkup, Hannah Simpson), one on

beam (Grace McBay), two on bars (Sylvia Horst, Morgan Hanley), and five for vault (Julia Ersil, Courtney Gidge, Natalie Mayer, Audrey Parker, Julia Code).

Bronze went to three for floor (Mackenzie Simpson, Sylvia Horst, Audrey Parker), seven on beam (Hannah Simpson, Mackenzie Simpson, Courtney Gidge, McKenna Heibein, Morgan Hanley, Natalie Mayer, Kara Dietrich), three on bars (Julia Ersil, Mackenzie Simpson, Tegan Krieger), and four for vault (Allison Saulesleja, McKenna Heibein, Madelyn Halstead, Tegan Krieger).

In the all-around category, Morgan Hanley won gold; Julie Code, Natalie Mayer, Sylvia Horst, and Julia Ersil won silver; and Allison Saulesleja, Mackenzie Simpson, Trinity Barnes, and Tegan Krieger took home bronze.

Code notes that the showing is especially strong given the changes to Gymnastics Ontario’s competition rules this season. “Now you have to do compulsory skills for each required level, whereas last year you could kind of do whatever you wanted to do within certain guidelines.

“For the kids, they had to learn new skills. They have to do a move and it has to be exactly to the text in the rulebook. There’s no wavering, no grey area, it’s all black and white.”

The year isn’t quite over yet. On May 17, seven members of the team will go on to the smaller ‘Lightning By the Falls Invitational’ meet in Niagara Falls. After that, the club will put a cap on the year with its ‘Out With a Bang’ tournament on May 31. The daylong event will give athletes of all ages a chance to show

their strength on the ol’ bars and beams for friends and family.

“It’s just a good show,” said Code. “We have our recreation kids all the way up to competitive, boys and girls. You can come and see some great gymnastics; the competitive team does a little demonstration along with their coaches, and it’s a good time all around.”

Looking back on the year, Code says she saw an evolution in the team, particularly with its longtime members. “We have a big contingency on our team of older girls and they really stepped up and were great role models to the younger kids. They just really pulled together. With these new changes to the rules for competitive gymnastics, they buckled down and worked hard throughout the year, so it’s great

to see them get rewarded for it.”

If there’s a melancholy side to the end of year, it’s the departure of some of the gymnasts. “This year we’re losing quite a few girls just because they’re getting to the age of high school,” said Code. Studies get a little bit harder, and there are more sports in high school that they can do.

“It’s bittersweet because as gymnasts they’re done, but then they come back as our coaches. They haven’t left the gym completely.”

Indeed, even at the end of the year, it seems no one is leaving the gym completely: Tryouts for the 2014-15 season begin today, May 10 (advance registration is required), and training for competitive season begins July 7. For more information, visit www.woolwichgymnastics.com.

Technology extends resources to jobseekers in rural areas Region extends Elmira pilot project into all four townships, with focus on connecting to city services

STEVE KANNON Technology to help jobseekers in the region’s rural areas is now in place in each of the townships.

What began as a pilot project in Elmira in July 2012 has been rolled out in Wellesley, New Hamburg and Ayr, where Waterloo Region’s employment services department has installed computers that connect to its resource centres in the cities.

The computers provide one central page with multiple links to career planning and job-search websites, as well as résumé and career planning software.

“It’s sometimes tough to get into town – Kitchener, Waterloo or Cambridge, whatever is the closest centre – so we put the tech-

“It’s a link to our resource centres in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge,” he added, noting there’s also a line to connect to live assistance while working at a computer. “If they’ve got questions, they can pick up the phone and call our

resource centre.”

As with the pilot project established at Woolwich Community Services in Elmira, the other three locations make use of partnerships with community agencies. In Wellesley, that’s the Wellesley Township Community Health Centre. The others are the Wilmot Family Resource Centre in New Hamburg and Family Counselling Centre of Cambridge

& North Dumfries in Ayr. At WCS, executive director Don Harloff said the technology enhances the job-search programs that have been a mainstay of the agency for more than two decades.

Among those offerings is an employment councillor who’s onsite once a week, a partnership with Conestoga College – beyond technology, it’s “a face and

a person to chat with.”

That person is David Brown, a work and career coach who spends his time on the road serving rural communities, including Wednesdays at WCS and Mondays in Wellesley. A colleague is in New Hamburg on Wednesdays.

And a new poll designed to eke out rural priorities suggests they’re right.

The poll in question, which opened after the provincial election was called last week and closed Wednesday at 5 p.m., was led by the Rural Ontario Institute. And while it’s among dozens of surveys underway to check the electorate’s pulse – with campaigning for the June 12 election now in full swing – it’s the only online poll I’ve seen soliciting rural participation.

This kind of open survey does not provide accurate enough results to be considered water-tight. But it ROBERTS | 18

certainly offers a glimpse of what people think.

And in that light, the questions are perhaps more revealing than the answers are likely to be.

Here’s why. The institute described this poll as “an opportunity for respondents to share the most important priorities for the rural Ontario community they are most familiar with.”

Note that wording. It didn’t restrict responses to farmers. Or even to farmers and non-farming rural residents.

Instead, it solicited thought from anyone who believed they had a stake in

the place to chime in, any citizens interested enough to put their rural-oriented concerns to their local candidates, and find out what plans they have to address them.

Clever. So right off the bat, the institute flung a wide net. And rightly so, when you look at the survey’s suggested priority list, the one the institute used to draw responses.

For example, the survey asks respondents to prioritize efforts to improve local water and sewage systems, roads and bridges, and provincial highways.

These appear to be “rural” matters. But who from urban Ontario doesn’t

think that’s a priority for them, too? Provincial highways passing through rural Ontario are how we get from town to town, from city to cottage. That’s a priority for manufacturers, processors, cottagers, and many more.

And what about municipal infrastructure? That sounds local and community-specific. But for many urban Ontario towns and cities, their drinking water either comes from or flows through rural Ontario, in rivers they value for recreation or aesthetics. So of course they’d consider modern and sound rural municipal infrastructure vital, if they thought about it.

Then there’s climate change and invasive species, which likewise appear on the rural Ontario suggested priorities list.

But I believe Ontarians, regardless of where they live, have taken a new interest in the unusually unpredictable weather and wild swings in extremes.

They also care whether they’re going to be able to catch something other than Asian carp in the fragile and precious Great Lakes.

Again, these are rural matters for the survey, but they affect many people.

And how about economic priorities, such as job opportunities, local food development and rural tour-

ism? Or human resources matters, such as youth retention, services for the aging, “newcomer attraction” and housing affordability?

No one will move to rural areas if services are lacking, and young people will be reluctant to build lives and careers there if the demographic is out of whack.

Likewise, urban Ontario – or any city anywhere – is poorly served if job-seeking ruralites flock there expecting to find work.

When labour needs are met but people keep pouring in, cities then have to look after them. That creates new needs all by itself.

And we haven’t even touched on urban sprawl,

farmland preservation and renewable energy. Some of these become rural issues because urban Ontarians force them on their rural counterparts. But that cause-and-effect hardly makes it fair to call these purely “rural” issues and priorities.

I’ll bring you the survey results in weeks to come.

But regardless of the specific outcome, it’s clear to me rural Ontario is indeed indispensable to urban Ontario, just like any rural areas are to their neighbouring cities. Municipal boundaries change with the lines on a map, but the symbiotic relationship between the two does not.

Ontario, he can help with access to various programs, including the use of the computer links to the region’s services.

“Whoever comes in that’s out of work, we’re happy to see,” said Brown.

From students – it’s prime job-seeking time for them right now – to dis-

placed executives such as those from Blackberry, the services are open to everyone in the townships.

“When I’m here, that’s an enhanced service.”

In the case of WCS, the array of social programs coordinated through the agency provides plenty of referrals to the face-to-face job assistance Brown provides.

“It’s an excellent partnership,” he said of the relationship with WCS. “What we do complements their services quite well.”

With the array of services, the goal is to get people back to work as quickly as possible, which can sometimes be a bit more problematic in the rural areas.

Transportation, in particular, can be an issue.

“For those who don’t have cars, geography is a barrier,” said Brown, noting that the bus to St. Jacobs and Elmira is the exception in the townships.

For those in entry-level or other low-paying jobs, transportation can consume a fair amount of their incomes, so a job closer to home is most desirable.

The distances become less

of an issue for those seeking higher-level jobs, as they know they’ll likely be commuting longer distances.

As with all jobs, however, there is far less selection in the rural municipalities, another of the challenges.

At the region, the use of technology is one more tool to help rural jobseekers.

“Certainly, we want to

support the rural population ... in those efforts,” said Fisken.

On the technology side, if someone doesn’t have a phone, for instance, a voicemail system can be set up at the resource centre. In the future, there may be an expansion into videoconferencing and the provision of educational and instructional webinars.

An emphasis on the swashbuckling antics Youth theatre’s production of The Three Musketeers plays up the action-packed parts of Dumas’ classic tale WILL SLOAN When the teenaged cast of act OUT’s The Three Musketeers began rehearsing, director Amy Neufeld noticed a rise in spirit.

“One of my actors after rehearsal turned to me and said, ‘This is actually going to be a good show!’” laughs Neufeld. “And I said, ‘Actually?’ He said, ‘Yeah – with all the fights!’”

Suffice to say, all was going according to plan for the youth drama program’s latest production. “The action/adventure was the part that I really wanted to bring forward for our production. In the original script, there were swordfights, but it didn’t really jump out at me. I thought it really needed to pop.”

When Neufeld was approached to direct the adaptation of Alexander Dumas’ classic tale, she realized she had never cracked open the book.

While various film and TV adaptations have made d’Artagnan and the Musketeers of the Guard familiar to family audiences, the actual 170-year-old novel proved different than her expectations.

“It somehow gets associated with kids, although I have no idea how that happened,” she says. “At first it was a bit of a slog

for me to get through, just setting the stage. There are a lot of historical bits that come in there, which if you were reading it when it was written would have been the equivalent of Rob Ford references, but for me were, ‘I don’t know what this battle is that they’re talking about.’

“But I found as I moved further and further into it that it really grabbed me.

But I said, ‘This is not for kids. What are we going to do?’”

Help came in the form of that perennial boon to the scholar – the ‘Great Illustrated Classics’ abridged edition.

“With the illustrated nature of it, it really brought the action/adventure out.

The novel itself is hugely long, and for me it got a bit bogged down in the history and some of the language.

But that graphic novel really helped, so that’s actually what I referred to a fair bit when I was adapting.”

Bringing down the 786page book became a matter of keeping the action coming, with an eye towards a young audience. “When you direct plays for kids, you’re really mindful of that level of activity of action, of keeping the excitement up,” says Neufeld. “A four-year-old’s attention span is really not going to stay with you if you de-

cided to do ten minutes of just talking.”

However, she added, “After having read the novel, there were all these moments that I loved – ‘Oh, it’s such a shame we don’t get to meet that character.’

But it’s like turning a book into a movie – you can’t keep everything.”

But don’t worry, parents – it’s not all violence for violence’s sake. With the help of Toronto-based fight choreographer Matt Richardson, Neufeld says it will be a well-balanced evening of literary theatre.

“It’s like how in a good musical, the musical numbers aren’t just stop-andsing, and then get back to the story – the musical numbers move you along in the story. That’s the same thing with the swordfights – they help tell the story.”

She continues, “It’s not just, ‘Now we’re going to see some really cool swordfighting.’ It furthers the story along, and tells us a lot about the characters in how they fight. [In rehearsal], it’s not just a question of getting the actual move down: Athos is going to fight a lot differently than Porthos.”

Much of the credit, she says, is due to the young cast, with ages ranging from 10 to 17 and featuring many veterans of previous

“They come in already at a certain level,” she says.

“They’re really receptive to the direction. When you talk about character, they know how to integrate that.

What you want with kids this age is to build those skills, so that when they go out with a more adult cast, they’re not coming in as a rookie.”

Sewage Lagoons Ditches and Depressions Catch Basins

Between May 10, 2014 and October 31, 2014, municipalities within the Region of Waterloo will be conducting a larviciding program under the authority of the Region of Waterloo Medical Officer of Health to prevent the development of mosquito larvae into vectors of West Nile Virus. The granular formulation of the larvicide Bs (Bacillus sphaericus) (Vectolex® CG PCPA #28008) will be applied to sewage lagoons within the Region, where larvae are present. The liquid formulation of the larvicide Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) (Vectobac® 1200L PCPA #21062) or (Vectobac® 200G PCPA #18158) will be applied to standing water in ditches and depressions throughout the Region, where larvae are present.

The pellet formulation of the larvicide methoprene (Altosid® PCPA #21809) or the pelleted/ pouch formulation of the larvicide Bs (Bacillus sphaericus) (Vectolex® WSP PCPA #28009) will be placed into standing water in catch basins throughout the Region, where larvae are present. All larvicide will be applied by Ministry of the Environment licensed applicators or trained technicians employed by GDG Environnement Ltée.

Elmira sisters on a mission to make a difference

With Emma Wichers working at a hospital in Zambia, sister Jisca tackles her first marathon to help raise funds WILL SLOAN When Elmira resident Emma Wichers graduated from the nursing program at Conestoga College, she could have started her career just about anywhere.

After doing a three-month student placement at Chitokoloki Mission Hospital in the Republic of Zambia, “anywhere” became Africa.

But when the time came to raise money for the selffunded hospital, she found support from a little closer to home.

“For the mission, it’s always kind of a struggle to stay afloat … You raise your own support,” said Jisca Wichers, Emma’s sister, a master’s student at Wilfrid Laurier. “I’ve always wanted to run a marathon, and I knew I’d have to have a pretty strong inspiration to actually be able to do it.

“It went through downtown Toronto, so there were people most of the way cheering you on, and you get to see the CN Tower and go through King Street.”

On April 27, Jisca took to the streets of Toronto and made it all the way to the end of Good Life Marathon.

In doing so, she raised $2,000 for MSC Canada (twice her original goal), which will help pay for medication and treatment at Chitokoloki.

Jisca trained for the marathon since January, with a four-month plan of

ambitious practice runs that peaked at 36km. “You never actually run the full distance, so I found that a little scary. ‘Can I actually do it or not?’” she said.

One of the surprises was learning that a marathon is as much of a psychological challenge as it is a physical one. “People kept talking about having mantras, but when I got to that point, it was just one step at a time,” she laughed. “No mantras were going to help me at that point.

“There were these two guys in front of me, and this one guy was coaching the other. He literally had his arm around him, and was pushing him on. That helped me, too – seeing the camaraderie, and hearing the coaching tips.”

Still, the physical challenge is no picnic either. No one wants to collapse just before the end of a marathon, and Jisca received some much-needed support from her family.

“The best part was approaching the finish line and seeing my family there.

My brother joined me for the last three kilometres.

He was wearing his jeans, his hoodie, his boots, and he ran with me. I don’t know if that’s actually allowed or not, but that feeling was great.”

What is a recipe? For some it’s a closely guarded secret, passed down from generation to generation – a treasure only given, to a select few. For others, we share our thoughts and ideas on paper. This takes time and often requires playing with the recipe over and over until it suits our taste and, more importantly, that of our guests.

Some recipes in our kitchen have evolved over time. Some are still evolving. The subject of taste is personal and the art of cooking can be lost if the recipe is gospel. Depending on the time of year, the squash may need to be tamed or brought to life, for instance.

The danger is following a recipe to the point of no return, where instinct doesn’t come forward. This is a challenge for a society that has been trained to expect the same experience over and over. There is a fine line between consistency and creativity. Every person following the same recipe will have a different outcome. Cooking from the heart takes instinct and courage.

Pervasive technology fills our world with weapons of mass distraction WEIRD NOTES

Q. When in the presence of a certain carnivorous flower, would behaving sheepishly help save your skin?

A. Not if the flower is a

Chilean â&#x20AC;&#x153;Puya chilensisâ&#x20AC;? and if behaving sheepishly means behaving like a sheep, says â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mental Flossâ&#x20AC;? magazine. The monstrous flower, which can take 20 years to bloom, has razorsharp spines for ensnaring small animals like birds and, yes, sheep. The animals that wander too close to the plant canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wriggle free and eventually starve to death. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The process ainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t

pretty,â&#x20AC;? but as the victims decompose, they fertilize the soil and provide needed nourishment for the aptly named â&#x20AC;&#x153;sheep-eater.â&#x20AC;?

Even watching TV is no longer straightforward as people use their mobile tech for â&#x20AC;&#x153;second screeningâ&#x20AC;? (monitoring social media commentary about the show theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re watching) and â&#x20AC;&#x153;chatterboxingâ&#x20AC;? (chatting online with people watching the same show).

In the midst of all this digital â&#x20AC;&#x153;hectivity,â&#x20AC;? we like to think of ourselves as â&#x20AC;&#x153;polyattentive,â&#x20AC;? though â&#x20AC;&#x153;continuous partial attentionâ&#x20AC;? is more like it, as we

focus ostensibly on one task even as we wait for something more important to pop up. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no wonder many of us suffer from â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;nomophobia,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; the fear of being without a mobile phone or a cellular signal,â&#x20AC;?

McFedries says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thus have our phones and tablets become â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;weapons of mass distraction.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Herbed Crepes with Smoked Salmon 1 cup milk 3 eggs 2 tbsp butter, melted 1 cup all purpose flour 1/4 tsp salt, pinch of pepper Vegetable oil Filling (cream together) 3 tbsp sour cream 1/2 block of cream cheese 1 tbsp parsley, chopped 1/2 lemon, squeezed 1 tsp of horseradish Salt and pepper to taste

Whisk eggs, milk, and melted butter together, add the flour, salt and pepper.

Whisk until smooth. Place

in refrigerator for approx.

30 minutes; Preheat pan, place vegetable oil in pan and ladle in crepe batter into pan – this will make a very thin pancake. Once golden on one side, flip to cook other side. Allow to cool; Layer smoked salmon and horseradish cream, and roll crepe; Refrigerate, and cut into 1-inch slices.

6 oz semi-sweet chocolate, melted 1/4 cup butter 1 tbsp instant coffee 1 egg yolk 2 tsp Kahlua White chocolate

Once chocolate is melted set aside to cool; Cream the butter until soft in a bowl, add the instant coffee; Stir in the chocolate, egg yolk, and Kahlua; Chill mixture until firm enough to pipe; Fill the piping bag, pipe small stars on parchmentlined pan, set in fridge to chill; Melt white chocolate in double boiler. Hold the Mocha Creams by the base and dip into chocolate. Allow to harden, sprinkle with icing sugar and cinnamon.
