Blaze destroys farm buildings, contents elena maystruk Two barns and a workshop were destroyed in a fire on Cox Creek Road near Winterbourne Monday evening, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage.

The blaze was reported around 6:30 p.m. and saw approximately $300,000 worth of overall property damage ($200,000 in buildings and $100,000 in contents) according to Woolwich Township deputy fire chief Dale Martin.

“It pretty much destroyed the whole thing,” he said Tuesday.

About 40 firefighters from the Conestogo, St. Jacobs and Maryhill fire stations battled the blaze that’s believed to have started in a chimney. The property owners were boiling a small amount of maple syrup in a workshop on

Board contemplating a new location for Elmira’s Riverside PS will sloan The Waterloo Regional District School Board plans to reconstruct Riverside Public School in Elmira, and now it’s looking for feedback from the community. Next month, the board will begin a boundary study in Elmira that may also encompass changes to Park Manor and John

Manhood public schools.

The study will give the WRDSB a chance to consider community feedback about the reconstruction of Riverside, as well as to discuss school boundaries and enrolment sizes for all elementary schools in the area.

“We’re looking at closing the existing Riverside Public School, however rebuilding a new River-

Block Three Brewing Co. would operate from 1430 King St. N., unit 2.

The resolution approved Tuesday night will be forwarded to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario in support of the company’s application for a manufacturer’s limited liquor sales licence – also known as a by-the-glass licence, needed to sell single-servings of the product on the premises.

Phil Hipkiss, one of the partners in the business, told councillors he’s shooing to be open in time for the Canada Day long weekend, admitting it’s “a bit of a lofty goal” given the work

yet to be done.

The idea for a microbrewery came out of his involvement with a local beer club, he explained.

The name Block Three Brewing Co. has historical significance. In 1798, one of the earliest settlers in the area, William Wallace, was deeded 86,000 acres of land on the Grand River for $16,364. Known as Block Three of Indian Lands, the land made up a large part of what is now Woolwich Township. And the name rolls off the tongue a bit easier than Jakobstettel, another historical name from the past, he added with a laugh.

Councillors quickly endorsed a recommendation brought to the table by director of council and information services Christine Broughton.

“Welcome to St. Jacobs,” said Coun. Mark Bauman.

Keep schools in place, says council Three schools in the township – St. Jacobs, Three Bridges and St. Boniface – facing changes, including being mothballed, may be candidates for Woolwich’s heritage registry.

Coun. Bonnie Bryant wants the township to look into the suitability of each of the schools as candidates for the designation.

Meeting Tuesday night, councillors also expressed a concern about the possible changes, opting to express their desire the schools be left as part

of their respective communities.

At the public board, a new building to replace St. Jacobs Public School and the closure of Three Bridges PS are under consideration as the school board reacts to shifting demographics.

The original St. Jacobs Public School could be demolished in favour of a brand new school.

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board, meanwhile, is proposing to close St. Boniface school in Maryhill, building a new school in Breslau.

the WRDSB will also host two public meetings for the community at large, with the dates to be announced. So far, there is no set-in-stone timeline for the study’s completion.

“It’s a public process, so it’s going to be dependent on the consultations we have with the public,” said Hercanuck. “In past situations like this where

we’re looking at a boundary study and accommodation review, maybe three or four months, not including the summer.”

Even after that, a new school could be a long way off yet.

Many Western visitors, however, are struck by the amount of happiness and positivity found in the local rural villages like Matangwe in Kenya – something Elmira’s Jaye Rice found out for himself five years ago on his first trip to the impoverished area. Now he’s going back and taking some neighbours with him.

The three Elmira residents and a New Hamburg man will be joining a Waterloo philanthropist Stephen Scott in Kenya next month to continue an important community project started in the village of Matangwe.

Rice, a pastor in Waterloo, met Scott and his wife Sylvia through their church. Scott emigrated from Matangwe to Canada in 2001, returning briefly to marry his wife. After making careers for themselves – he as a teacher at Waterloo Collegiate Institute, she a nurse at Grand River Hospital – the two decided to give back to the communities they grew up in. The couple has been operating

Over more than a decade the couple has seen to the completion of many social and medical projects in the area, including a clinic, a community centre, a mor-

The Scotts have been working primarily with medical professionals to battle rampant illnesses like the AIDS and malaria pandemics, Rice explained.

But in recent years social initiatives have also grown.

That’s where Rice’s small team comes in.

Elmira’s Nick Betts is an applied research coordinator with an agricultural association in Guelph, and will be joining the team on the two-week trip to provide assistance with a new farming initiative.

“I’m going to be going around and talking to the farmers themselves to see what the history of their fields is and what the potential is for the fields, what challenges they are facing. The idea is to give them the resources to solve the problem themselves,” Betts said.

Also joining for the first time are Dianna Weltz of Elmira and Gary McNitt of New Hamburg. Matangwe has a large population of widows who serve essential roles in the community, Weltz explained. There is also a large population of young students – about

EDSS’ ranking remains steady in Fraser Institute study will sloan Students at Elmira District Secondary School are performing about on par with last year, according to a study released last week by the Fraser Institute. The Elmira school ranks as number 67 out of 725 secondary schools in Ontario in the think tank’s annual “report card” of schools.

The Fraser Institute gives EDSS an 8/10 rating for the 2011-2012 school year.

A public policy institution often identified with conservative libertarianism, the Fraser Institute’s stated goal is “to measure, study and communicate the impact of competitive markets and government intervention on the welfare of individuals.”

Their annual School Report Cards seek to measure

schools in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec based on provincial standardized testing.

In Ontario, the EQAO’s Grade 9 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test forms the primary source of the Fraser Institute’s research.

The report shows that 85.5 per cent of EDSS students passed the test on their first attempt in 2012, down slightly from 86.3 per cent

in 2011, though down more significantly from 92.8 per cent in 2008. 76.1 per cent of 2012 students passed on the second attempt.

There was deemed to be no gender gap in math. Students in both the academic and applied math streams averaged at a 3.0 rating, which “suggests that students are well prepared to work at the next grade” (the highest rating is 4.0).

Fourteen per cent of tests were judged below standard (the number was 15.7 per cent in 2011).

Representatives from both the Waterloo Region District School Board and EDSS declined requests to comment, instead directing us to an official statement on the WRDSB’s website. The statement says the report “provides an incomplete and inac-

curate view of our schools,” and adds that EQAO test results “are not intended to be used to rank schools.

Rather, they assist school and board staff to identify areas of improvement.”

The statement goes on to say, “We feel that using only EQAO results to rank schools undermines the richness of school communities, discourages staff, and diminishes the efforts of students.”

The inspirational event in the fight against cancer that is the Relay for Life gets a decidedly Woolwich flavour this year.

Residents Carey Gallagher and Tracy Duldhardt are co-chairing the first-ever community version – there have been student-driven events held at Elmira District Secondary School in the past – thanks to a growing community and the story of one woman.

“Really, once you do it you feel very much connected to the experience.

It’s a very meaningful event,” said Duldhardt, who has participated in past events.

Relay for Life is a 12-hour overnight fundraising event that also brings people together as a support system.

Both women work on staff at St. John’s-Kilmarnock School and have applied to hold the event locally in the past with unsuccessful results. This year they presented the Canadian Cancer Society with a strong argument, a venture made all the more powerful through their own connection with a victim of cancer. Leanna Bedford, 36, of Cambridge succumbed to cancer in 2012.

“Leanna had cervical cancer and she fought it for about a year and four months or just under a year-and-a-half. They realized that something was going on when she was getting to the end of her first pregnancy.”

“In May [2012] when [her son] Dylan was 16 months old, she passed away. That was moving for us because we’re both young parents and that’s pretty much the power behind where we’re coming from,” Duldhardt said.

The local branch of the Canadian Cancer Society, which oversees Relay for Life events in the region, has agreed to an event in the township.

“We told them Leanna’s story. We talked about the changes in Woolwich and the size of the community.

That was really the point where the Cancer Society finally said, ‘yeah, this is going to work.’”

As of Tuesday, organizers counted 16 Woolwich teams that have already signed up for the event.

Both women and many of the 15 committee members have attended previous relays but are happy

to see their efforts come to fruition on a local front.

“This [process] has been really cool because, although we’ve tried a number of times, I think it’s really amazing that it’s on the heels of Leanna passing away, because we’ve been able to channel our grief into fighting back,” Gallagher said.

The organizers’ success so far has been due to family and friends (including those close to Bedford) becoming the backbone of the initiative. Many staff members at SJK are also lending a hand and the school is donating the venue for the event. But that’s not the goal, the co-chairs agree.

“The big picture is to show that the smallest towns can have the biggest hearts,” Duldhardt said.

The Woolwich event takes place on June 21 at St. John’s-Kilmarnock School at 2201 Shantz Station Rd. in Breslau and runs from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. For information contact woolwichrelay@sjkschool.org. Despite the extensive damage, no one was injured, and there were no animals in any of the buildings.

Several cars parked inside were destroyed, however.

Martin said the blaze that took crews several hours to contain was purely accidental. The extent of the fire meant it was 2 a.m. before the last fire truck finally left the scene.

Residents to get reminders about water usage Summertime spikes in water usage are to be expected, but numbers recorded last year seem to suggest that some residents may not be adhering to the lawn-watering ban that accompanies the driest part of the season.

In a report to council this week, director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley said he’s got some suspicions about the “unusual water

use” seen over the summer months.

Woolwich monitors water in eight systems.

In Elmira, for instance, usage peaked at 104,000 cubic metres of water last July and August, up substantially from the 80,000 cubic metres seen in January and February.

In the Conestogo golf course system, July and August figures were almost 9,000 cubic metres, three times the levels seen in the first two months of 2012.

“This is costing all of the Woolwich water users because some people want to have green lawns,” said Coun. Mark Bauman.

As a remedy, the township plans to send out notices with upcoming water bills, reminding all residents of the summertime

restrictions on usage. Councillors preferred that idea to stepping up bylaw enforcement and fines.

“The soft approach is the better approach,” said Coun. Bonnie Bryant.

Region approves Sawmill Road improvements Meeting this week, regional council approved improvements to Sawmill Road from Musselman Crescent to the Conestogo Bridge and Northfield Drive from the south limits of Conestogo to

Country Spring Walk.

The improvements are needed to address poor pavement conditions and the need for enhanced pedestrian and cycling facilities. An amendment to reduce the speed limit to 40 km/h at the appropriate location around the school was also included. Highlights of improvements to the roads include: Sawmill Road and Northfield Drive intersection improvements; sidewalk link from the village to Golf Course Road; widening Sawmill Road by one metre on both sides of the road; village entrance features at each approach on Sawmill Road and

Northfield Drive.

The estimated cost for the improvements is $4 million, with construction expected in 2017.

Region, CUPE ratify new contract The agreement between the Region of Waterloo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1656, representing the region’s outside workers, received ratification this week. The total compensation cost of the four-year

agreement is 5.49 per cent.

The deal, which runs to Dec. 31, 2016, features a 1.5 per cent pay increase in each of the four years. Adjustments to benefits and premiums will result in efficiencies over the life of the agreement, lowering the effective financial hit.

CUPE Local 1656 includes 199 full-time and 12 part-time workers employed in airport operations, facilities and fleet management, procurement and supply services, transportation, waste management, water service and Waterloo Regional Housing maintenance.

Plunge into river nets driver a careless driving charge Two occupants of a truck were left uninjured when their vehicle plunged into the Conestogo River at 5:18 a.m. on March 22.

The 19-year-old male driver and a passenger were travelling eastbound on Line 86 near Wallenstein in Woolwich Township when the truck left the roadway and plunged into

the river. The occupants were able to exit the vehicle and wade through the river to the shore.

Line 86 was closed to traffic for approximately an hour in the late morning while police completed the investigation and the truck was hoisted out of the river.

The driver was charged with careless driving.

2:53 PM | A two-vehicle collision occurred on Northfield Drive in Woolwich Township.

A black Pontiac Grand Prix was heading northbound on Northfield Drive in the 1800 block when the driver lost control on the snow-covered road and slid into the oncoming lane. A southbound Freightliner truck managed to swerve to avoid a head-on collision. There were minor injuries to the drivers, but no charges were laid.

10:12 AM | A singlevehicle collision occurred in the 1100 block of Hopewell Creek Road near Breslau. A vehicle was southbound on Hopewell Creek Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crossed the centerline into the oncoming lane before the car came to rest against a fence. It was snowing at the time and roads were icy.

The driver didn’t sustain any injuries and no charges were laid.

3:14 PM | A man lost control of his vehicle, slid through an intersection and ended up in a ditch at Bisch Street and Benjamin Road in Woolwich Township. There were no injuries and no charges.

7:03 PM | A single-vehicle rollover occurred on Listowel Road. The vehicle had two occupants in it when it left the roadway due to icy conditions.

There were no injuries. No charges were laid.

9:57 PM | A 17-year-old male driver lost control of his vehicle on icy roads. There were no injuries or charges.

11:10 AM | The driver of a silver Honda slid off the roadway due to icy conditions while travelling on Northfield Drive near Line 86, east of Elmira.

11:12 AM | In the 1800 block of Listowel Road, the driver of a Chevy Blazer lost control on the ice-covered road and went endover-end into ditch before landing on the roof of the vehicle.

The woman was uninjured. There were no charges.

On March 26 at 3:40 p.m., a pickup truck with two occupants was struck from behind by another pickup truck driven by a Heidelberg man.

Woolwich and Wellesley report council, committee remuneration levels for 2012 STEVE KANNON Woolwich councillors collected a total of $84,734 in pay and filed expense claims of $11,303 in 2012, according to a report discussed this week at township council. That compares to $76,866 and $6,635 the previous year.

In a housekeeping measure mandated by the province, finance director Richard Petherick filed a statement of payments and expenses that was accepted by council at Tuesday night’s meeting. The Ontario Municipal Act gives municipalities until March 31 to make the details public.

received $26,558, with expenses of $5,109. Each of the four ward councillors got $14,544, filing various expenses for such thing as mileage and conference fees: Mark Bauman, $545; Bonnie Bryant, $2,716; Julie-Anne Herteis, $1,216; Allan Poffenroth, $1,717.

Petherick’s report also noted the township paid five members of its Committee of Adjustment remuneration totaling $1,760 and expenses that amounted to $808.

In Wellesley, a similar report shows councillors received a total of $60,807 and filed expenses of $11,900.65 in 2012. For the previous year, the corre-

sponding numbers were $59,795.89 and $14,255.59.

Mayor Ross Kelterborn was paid $17,152.12, drawing a mileage allowance of $2,199.96 and expenses of $135.01.

Each of the councillors received $10,913.72, and mileage allowances of $800.04. Herb Neher filed expenses of $2,074.06; Paul Hergott, $3,727.75; Jim Olender, $3,588.19; and Shelley Wagner, $2,375.64.

Four committee of adjustment members received $1,295, and received mileage costs of $440.50.

Eight members of the recreation committee received a total of $520.

“After this public process is done and we go to the trustees with our recommendations … if there’s significant capital works, such as a new school or new additions to other schools, then we have to apply for approval

from the Ministry of Education."

Kenya: Visitors struck by stark contrasts from | 3

First-time travellers are often warned about the effects of culture shock when visiting impoverished communities, but the initiatives in Kenya have a way of bringing positivity and hope to the environment, he said.

“It was extremely sobering coming back and realizing how well we have it here and yet at the same time, you go there and you’ve never seen such happy people,” said Rice of his experience.

Turnin’ Elmira into a guitar town elena maystruk Next weekend will be all about the maple syrup in Elmira, but the following weekend will be one for guitar aficionados. April 14 is when the fourth annual Elmira Vintage Guitar Show and Swap rolls into town.

“We got the idea from seeing other trade shows and swap meets and realized there wasn’t anything like that around the area for guitars,” said organizer John Woods.

Guitar shows are more popular south of the Canadian border and in recent years some have popped up in Toronto as well, but that still gives local producers and musicians limited options.

“We are the only show of this kind this side of Toronto,” Woods added.

This year’s “pièce de résistance” is a pair of very special guitars. One vendor, Bill Scheltema, is bringing two custom-built guitars soon to be delivered to Canadian icon Randy Bachman.

Woods said many vendors will be looking to sell their wares as well as trade with other enthusiasts and professionals.

“There are lots of independent builders and collectors in this area and there’s no real outlet for them to sell or display their guitars. The show was born partially out of that idea, too; that here’s an opportunity for local guys that are building three or four guitars a year, where they

Every year the event has expanded to include more vendors and visitors that are looking for exposure, a good deal or just a place to talk music.

Last year the show saw about 500 visitors through the doors of Lions Hall in Elmira and in a few weeks Woods anticipates an even bigger turnout.

Woods – an avid guitar collector himself – is the show’s sole proprietor and often works with high school volunteers on the

day of the event. He said if there is one thing still missing from the relatively new project it’s locals.

“In general we wish that more local people would come out. There’s been lots of people that come from all over, but there’s never been a huge contingency of local people come out, so I wish that locals would just come out, have a look around and see what it’s all about.”

The show runs April 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lions Hall in Elmira. Admission is $7 at the door.

Wellesley native Jim Erb is 2012 K-W Citizen of the Year Businessman, philanthropist, politician and volunteer, he attributes his outlook on life to small-town upbringing elena maystruk If you asked Jim Erb how he felt about the recent attention he’s been getting, he would sum it up in one word: overwhelmed.

The long time Waterloo Region philanthropist, business owner and former City of Waterloo councillor is the 2012 Citizen of the Year for KitchenerWaterloo.

“Makes you squirm a bit,” he joked in an interview when asked about the recognition he has been getting of late.

But the Wellesley native says that community contribution, whatever form it takes, is not about the recognition for those who see it as second nature.

“Being raised in a small village – there were 800 or 900 people when I left – that had a significant impact on my life. You just knew everybody, you just did everything. It didn’t matter what it was, you just worked together.

It’s just typical of a small town’s sense of being a community and my parents were powerful examples as well.”

Erb has had a long career in funeral services having graduated and found a job at a Wellesley funeral home in 1966. In 1969 he came to Waterloo. He has been at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home for 37 years and a partner for nearly 30.

Now a grandfather of five, he looks back at years of

commitment to Waterloo and Wellesley’s communities.

Along with being one of the founding members of the Apple Butter and Cheese Festival held annually in Wellesley Village, Erb was a Waterloo City councillor for eight years (1980-1988), having inherited a passion for politics from his father, longtime former Wellesley councillor and mayor Albert Erb. “It’s something I grew up with at home – I’m a political junky. It was sort of an opportunity to contribute, maybe, to the city, to a different venue than what I would have normally been involved in the not-for-profit sector,” Erb explained.

“I didn’t run and get elected to Waterloo council with any axe to grind. I was just thinking that hopefully I could make a difference.”

A committed church contributor and a member of the KitchenerConestoga Rotary Club, he has led projects like the annual turkey drive and Rotary Dream Home lottery. Erb has had a chance to work with dozens of region-based causes such as the United Way of Kitchener-Waterloo, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, Kitchener Waterloo Council of Churches, Centre for Family Business, The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation,

Jubilee Medal in 2012 and received the Michael R. Follet Community Leader of the Year Award at the Greater Kitchener-

Waterloo Chamber of Commerce’s Business Excellence Awards this year.

“My involvement with

the Rotary Club has probably given me the greatest opportunity to contribute.

To see the differences you can create by being part of a larger group of raising that kind of money is rewarding for me,” he said of his contributions.

He credits the people around him with allowing him to wear so many hats over the years.

His wife, Marianne Schmidt, continues to support him and a business partner, Paul Good, understood clients were not the only ones who needed help.

“Sometimes it was a balancing act, but given how lucky I’ve been in the community what was contributed far outweighed the nuisance of being busy at times,” Erb said.

What does it mean to be named citizen of the year?

“You don’t get involved in the community to get recognized. I would rather go about and do my job and I don’t need the recognition. However, if it happens, then it’s an opportunity that I can use to maybe make it a teaching moment for other people … and say that it feels good to help one another, and challenge people to also become involved.”

To pay for needed infrastructure, we have to make cuts New taxes. Road tolls. Increased fees.

Ontarians should get a firmer grip on their wallets given the rumblings coming out of Queen’s Park of late.

By now, we’re all familiar with the constant lament of the infrastructure deficit, the money needed to replace ageing roads and bridges and the money needed to fund public transit, mostly in Toronto, but also Waterloo Region’s ill-conceived white elephant. For Premier Kathleen Wynne, infrastructure needs mean taking more from everybody – well, not those who can avoid it, as the Occupy movement notes – rather than eliminating spending elsewhere to pay for the essentials.

So, instead of prioritizing spending to cover needs instead of wants, we’ll just get higher taxes to pay for whatever wasteful measures come to mind.

We must spend more on infrastructure, particularly to ensure roads, bridges, water pipes and the like are safe.

Such things are the basic underpinnings of our communities, as well as the economy. Nobody can dispute the importance. We can, however, take issue with how much governments waste in dealing with such projects – from overspending to well-documented corruption – how they fail to budget for the long-term, and how they keep going back to the well over and over again.

Realistically, the only way to cover the massive costs for essential hard infrastructure programs while freezing or even cutting taxes is to cut services. That means there are decisions to be made about what to cut and by how much.

That’s not to say we’re prepared for the kind of widespread, ideologically-driven slashing proposed by corporate-backed parties and groups. In fact, Canadians as a whole have generally favoured modest tax increases to the reduction of social programs, especially health care and education. We’ve shied away from the proposals of the right, which favour tax cuts to the wealthy and spending on the military, prisons and other unproductive programs.

So, no, this is not a call for slashing. Rather, we need to recognize there are limits. As with all growth models, increases in government programs, staffing and tax levels are not sustainable – compounding taxes are outstripping our ability to pay them. When taxes and utility bills rise beyond any increases we may or may not get in our incomes, then we have to make decisions about where we’ll spend the rest. For the government, it’s no different.

If the increase is zero, then decisions will be made: wage freezes or rollbacks, staff cuts, program elimination are all options on the table.

Failure to recognize taxpayer fatigue undermines the credibility of government. At the municipal level, it leads to the election of the likes of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.

While he’s achieved little of note so far, his calls for cuts are music to the ears of overburdened municipal taxpayers, who’ve seen the rates increase dramatically without a commensurate increase in services. To the contrary, we’re getting less for more.

Therein lies the conundrum. Nobody appreciates paying taxes, but we do enjoy what the taxes bring us. We want all kinds of services, so we have to pay for them. Reasonable people recognize that fact. But what we want to see is good value for our money, which means focusing on what’s essential, and not using our money to benefit a few.

Government provides a host of benefits, but at a cost. At this point, we need to make a choice about what stays and what goes.

As Easter arrives, the scramble is on for more than just candy as Kitchener and Waterloo both think about getting in on the hunt.

Deal could end war between Kurds and Turks WORLD AFFAIRS “We are at a point today when the guns will fall silent and ideas will speak,” declared Abdullah Ocalan, leader of the Kurdish insurgency in Turkey, on March 21. “Turks and Kurds fought together (in the First World War), and launched the Turkish parliament together in 1922. The basis of the new struggle consists of ideas, ideology and democratic politics.” And with that, he declared a ceasefire.

Ocalan has declared ceasefires before, but the Turkish government made no substantial concessions on Kurdish rights so the fighting resumed. Nor is “democratic politics” a phrase you would readily link to Abdullah Ocalan, who tolerates no dissent in the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), the organization he created 30 years ago to fight for independence from Turkey. But this time really may be different.

After three decades of low-level guerrilla war

in southeastern Turkey (about a thousand deaths a year), both sides have concluded that they cannot win: the Kurds cannot win their independence, and Turkey cannot crush the armed Kurdish resistance to its repressive rule.

So Ocalan has stopped demanding independence and now talks about local self-government, Kurdish language rights, and an end to repression.

The other thing that’s different this time is that Ocalan has actually been talking to Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Tayyib Erdogan, since last October.

Not face-to-face, of course, but Ocalan has been held prisoner on Imrali Island, about two hours south of Istanbul, ever since Turkish agents captured him in Kenya in 1999, so it has been easy for Erdogan’s intelligence chief, Hakan Fidan, to go back and forth between the two men.

There is every reason to believe, therefore, that Ocalan’s ceasefire declaration, though apparently unilateral, was really coordinated between the two leaders. In which case the next steps that Ocalan promised – the

release of prisoners by both sides and the withdrawal of the 3,000 PKK fighters in southeastern Turkey into the adjacent parts of northern Iraq – were presumably agreed in advance too.

This is not a process that will eventually lead to the emergence of an independent Kurdish state.

That goal, promised to the Kurds by the victors at the end of the First World War, has been the dream of four generations of Kurds, but it is no closer than ever.

To bring all 30 million Kurds into a single, independent state would mean redrawing the borders of four major nations – Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria – and that is not going to happen. But Kurds already have full self-government (including a powerful army) in northern Iraq, and the Syrian Kurds have effectively thrown off Damascus’s rule in the east of that country, so a lesser Kurdish dream now seems almost within the realm of the possible.

That would be a large area, still divided by national borders but with free movement across them, where the Kurds of the

whole region could live, work and teach their children in their own language.

More than half that area would be in southeastern Turkey, so the deal that Ocalan and Erdogan may make, if things work out, is vital to this project.

There was never any real chance that a Kurdish state could be carved out of Turkey: the population in the southeast includes a large minority of Turks, and there are now millions of Kurds living in western Turkey (including an estimated three million in Istanbul). But Turkey is a democratic country, and full civil and language rights for Kurds would give them a very large say in how the Kurdish-majority parts of the country are run.

That is what is now on the table, and Ocalan seems content with it. Why would Prime Minister Erdogan (who quite recently said that he would have liked to see Ocalan executed) be interested in making the deal with the man?

Harper wants lapdogs, not watchdogs despite claims of transparency EDITOR'S NOTES You can bet there were no parting gifts – and certainly no tears – as Stephen Harper watched Kevin Page leave his post as Parliamentary Budget Officer last week.

Although Page was appointed by Harper, who created the position, the former PBO has not been a favourite of the prime minister given the often-critical reports that have come out of the office in the last six years. Page routinely took the Conservatives to task for inadequate, incomplete and outright incorrect budget numbers, exposing the government as incompetents ... and worse.

You can also bet Harper has no plans to replace Page with anyone other than a compliant toady.

Thus far there’s been no effort to find a new PBO, despite the fact the Conservatives have long known they were letting Page’s term expire. Instead, they’ve appointed the Parliamentary Librarian as the interim PBO. Aside from the effectiveness of that appointment – we’ve got every right to be skeptical – there’s also the issue of legality. According to government watchdog Democracy Watch, the move is clearly illegal, as the legislation makes no provision for interim measures.

“The federal Conservatives were negligent in not ensuring the appointment of a new Parliamentary Budget Officer before Kevin Page’s term finished last week, and the law does not allow for the appointment of an interim PBO,” says Tyler Sommers, the organization’s coordinator.

“The reality is they’re not taking this seriously,”

or otherwise – earned him Harper’s scorn, but great public support. We believe Page, not Harper.

Any government criticism directed at Page was always self-serving, designed to downplay the PBO’s findings, which inevitably turned out to be much more accurate – i.e. truthful – than what the Conservatives were feeding us. That scenario has played out under the Harper government many times, from run-ins with the Auditor General through to the Ethics Commissioner, with the Conservatives continually in the wrong.

“All the PBO has been doing is a good job,” says Sommers, noting Page’s assessments had proven correct time and time again as he challenged the government’s numbers.

Along with a proper PBO, Democracy Watch wants to see the position strengthened to make it yet more effective.

To give the issue more weight, Democracy Watch will take the government to court over the interim appointment. It’s also launched a national letterwriting campaign to make the PBO a fully independent and fully empowered watchdog.

Overturning the interim measures are a first step.

Replacing Page with someone credible and effective will be a bigger hurdle still, as the government was clearly unprepared for the critical reports from the PBO and has no intention of being open and honest with the public.

“They’re doing what they can to ensure that there’s not another Kevin Page in the position,” says Sommers of the Harper government’s handling of the file.

Page’s effectiveness in finding government budgeting faults – intentional

The PBO must be made a full Officer of Parliament, independent of Cabinet, with a fixed, non-renewable term of office and full power over the selection and management of their staff, says the group. As well, the selection of the PBO must be approved by a majority of party leaders after a public, merit-based nomination process to ensure a non-partisan and effective person is selected; the PBO must be given the resources needed to fulfill their mandate each year (based on an independent needs assessment of their proposed budget); the government must be required, before proposing significant spending, to check with the PBO to ensure that the actual total of the proposed spending is being accurately estimated; the PBO must be given the power to order the disclosure of any information (as the information commis-

sioners have in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec) they need to do their cost and spending assessments; and, the PBO must be required to release the findings of their investigations as soon as they are completed whether or not parliament is in session.

Sommers won’t be holding his breath for those changes: the government appears to have no intention of being open and transparent, pledges to the contrary. But we do live in a democracy, so public pressure can be brought to bear, which is where the letter-writing campaign comes into play.

“The public wants independent watchdogs who aren’t lapdogs,” he maintains, noting that if enough of us make our views known, the government will pay attention.

“We need to give politicians a good shove in the right direction.”

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.2% in the 12 months to February, following a 0.5% advance in January. The jump was largely attributable to transportation costs. Gasoline prices advanced 3.9% year over year in February following a 1.8% decrease in January. On a monthly basis, gasoline prices rose 8.4% in February, the largest monthly increase since May 2008.

Our broken cell phone market limits our use of mobile Internet technologies, and with it our creativity and entrepreneurship. Providing more choice for Canadians is crucial to innovation, and the success of our economy.

Canadians suffer from poor service because three big cell phone conglomerates control nearly 94 per cent of the market.

To make matters even worse, Rogers has come up with a plan to block our access to the few affordable mobile services that do exist by obtaining scarce wireless spectrum assets. This will mean more control for Big Telecom and higher prices and less choice for you and your family.

The Rogers plan breaks Industry Canada rules be-

cause it grants the Big Telecom conglomerate access to wireless spectrum assets that were specifically set aside for new, more affordable telecom options for Canadians.

The Industry Minister, Christian Paradis, has the ability to enforce the government’s rules for cell phone service but so far he has refused to do so.

Tens of thousands of Canadians have already told Paradis to stop Big Telecom from killing affordability in Canada’s mobile Internet and cell phone market at www.demandchoice.ca.

The government’s decision about wireless spectrum is a rare chance to change a bad situation, and unlock the potential of our digital economy.

tion through parliament.

He has two major aims: to prevent future military coups, and to remove the anti-religious elements in the documents that have restricted any political expression of Islam since the founding of the republic 90 years ago. He also wants to strengthen the presidency, now a largely ceremonial office, since he plans to run for president next year.

Ocalan has no objections to any of that. All he wants in a new constitution is full equality for the Kurds and their language. Since the new constitution requires a two-thirds majority in

parliament, and Erdogan will not have that majority without the support of the main Kurdish party, the Peace and Democracy Party, both men can only get what they want if the deal goes through.

Long-lasting marriages have been built on less promising foundations.

This time, at long last, Turkey may finally get around to recognizing the rights of the 20 per cent of its people who speak Kurdish. If it does, a long war will end, Erdogan will gain enormous political credit – and a post-modern version of the traditional Kurdish dream will start to come to life.

It all started with a hacka-thon at Sortable, a small Waterloo-based startup that builds specialized websites.

“In December we had an internal hack-a-thon which is basically, tell our developers to go build something different and have fun and get the creative juices flowing. A few of them came up with TripWhat,” said marketing professional Brenden Sherratt.

Several months ago a team of four colleagues took on the project. Waterloo residents Sherratt, lead developer Colin Dellow, Sortable co-founder Alex Black and product designer Chad Mueller of Breslau, collaborated to create a preliminary version of an iPhone travel app that has been gaining the attention of tech blogs and forums.

“We took data from some popular travel websites like Yelp and Urban Spoon and WikiVoyage and created a

mash-up of all these different sources of data into one app. The idea is that a lot of people use Yelp to discover restaurants but it’s not pretty and you are always switching between apps,” Sherratt explained.

It’s a tough market to get into, he said. With many popular travel apps already available, the team was looking to incorporate aspects of various existing features to create a new take on an established idea.

“The app is a one-stop shop for your travelling needs. In our minds, it probably works better than those other apps because you are not flicking through different apps.

The number-one goal is seeing your location and then filtering out what events, what restaurants or what attractions you are looking for. It makes it really, really easy,” Mueller said.

So despite many other options available to iPhone users, “it’s just trying to make it a lot more helpful for you when you are travelling,” Sherratt added.

TripWhat is a jump-off point for travellers to find what they are looking for and access everything from reviews to Facebook pages with one touch of the screen.

The events section of the app is one example, Sherratt noted. If the user is looking for live music

That’s what the Guelphbased Grain Farmers of Ontario say these days about biodiesel. They’re hoping Ontario Premier and Minister of Agriculture Kathleen Wynne agrees, after hearing from them about it when she and 625 others attended their March Classic meeting in London recently.

The grain farmers say they need the province’s support to make a biodiesel industry viable here.

Right now, the industry is concentrated in Western Canada (with biodiesel made from canola). There, the provinces all have what’s called a biodiesel incentive.

That means B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba all give biodiesel producers an incentive in the form of a tax break to catalyze processing and blending in their province.

Ontario to do the same thing. They want the 14cent tax exemption on biodiesel used in the province today to instead be collected and provided to the producers of biodiesel in Ontario. They say this would encourage the production and blending of local biodiesel – and they want it mandated that two per cent of the total diesel sold here be Ontario biodiesel.

That would be a tax incentive of about $23 million to processors and blenders, they say. But it could also be a boon to the environment. The Canadian Renewable Fuel Association says biodiesel

is 99 per cent cleaner than conventional diesel. And with diesel consumption expected to grow in Ontario, as mass transit further develops and commercial vehicles (mainly trucks) continue their dominance over our 400-series highways, environmental relief is welcome.

Biodiesel’s relative cleanliness has been known for a long time.

More than 10 years ago, the province introduced the tax credit for biodiesel use here. But it didn’t do anything to stimulate homegrown production.

Simply put, there was no mandated incentive for the industry to develop here.

Coincidentally, a federal mandate exists – and is budgeted for in Ontario (so this new incentive wouldn’t cost taxpayers any more money). But it’s typically satisfied by production in Western Canada.

So the grain farmers want to see some homegrown production. They say the premier listened intently, as have her predecessors (the lobby has been active for about a year).

And both opposition parties have warmed up to the idea. So with the provincial budget expected sometime in April, now’s the time for the grain farmers’ to turn up the heat.

But what about the

push-pull between soybeans for food versus for fuel? Facing a hungry world, is it wise to use crops for transportation instead of people?

Erin Fletcher, communications manager for the grain farmers, says that’s not an issue here. Ontario currently produces more than two million tonnes of soybeans, and doesn’t use anywhere near that amount. In fact, about 300,000 tonnes are export-

ed to Europe for – guess what? – biodiesel production there.

And it wouldn’t be a contrived industry. Ontario has the capacity and the population to support it.

Typically, biodiesel plants are located in small or rural communities (plants now exist near Sombra and Aylmer, for example), where the feedstock is available nearby. That’s also where political parties need to score points, and

where diversification is toughest.

Soybeans are already a highly researched commodity. Fletcher says a provincial biodiesel mandate would also stimulate additional studies aimed at making them even more productive.

So, the grain farmers have submitted their request. Now they wait.

Meanwhile, we keep getting soaked at the pumps.

Alternatives welcome.

hope to be able to pull some YouTube videos in the future but we’re not quite there yet. That kind of shows you all of that data coming together in one place.”

The app is available in Canada and the United States, with plans to possibly expand into Europe.

Yet there is still much to do before this piece of software is ready to take on the world.

In a crowded market, TripWhat has had a favourable reception but is still in the preliminary stages, the team agrees.

“I’m going to say it: it’s not the best app out there,”

Sherratt said. “There are better ones, but it’s our first version and we are showing that we are a work in progress – we are evolving. We’ve been working on it for three months and it’s pretty impressive. We’re trying to tell the story of how the app was made … showing that we are a small Waterloo start-up and showing that the data coming together is very important.”

“It’s pretty amazing, the thought of creating a project like this out of a few-hour event. It’s kind of interesting from that point of view,” Mueller added.

So far the reviews have been good, with popular technology blog Tech

Crunch giving the app some praise.

An excerpt from the review written by TechCrunch’s Derrell Etherington reads: “With TripWhat’s version one product, you can see the seeds of that larger goal at work; in densely populated areas, it already returns a number of results, and does so quickly, spanning events, restaurants and attractions. But the local developers are still looking to get TripWhat into the hands of more iPhone users to see how they can improve a well received idea.”

Kings part ways with coach, now looking for new recruits Organization praises efforts of Dean DeSilva, but decide that team needs to head in new direction will sloan

After an up-and-down season that saw the Sugar Kings off the ice after the first round of GOJHL playoffs, changes are underway for the Elmira team’s coaching staff.

Dean DeSilva, who served as head coach for the 201112 and 2012-13 seasons, will move to the Kitchener Minor Hockey Association for 2013-14, where he will coach the Midget Minor AAA team. General manager Paul Jennings and director of hockey operation Keith Stewart are seeking applicants for the head coach position.

“Dean’s a good coach.

We’re making a coaching change – he’s taken on another job … but Dean was good. He worked hard,” said Stewart.

“Things didn’t work out, it was time for a change maybe, and we’re going to see what happens going forward.”

The team’s staff is accepting applications until April 10, with more details available at the Kings’ website.

“Our general manager, Paul Jennings, is doing some interviews over the next couple of weeks, and we’d like to have somebody in place by our rookie camp,” said Stewart, referring to the Kings’ April 21 spring prospects camp.

After a stint coaching the Waterloo Siskins Junior B team, DeSilva joined the Sugar Kings as head coach in May 2011, replacing Geoff Haddaway. Previously, DeSilva was on the Elmira team’s staff in 2007 as an assistant coach.

Assistant coaches Dave Locke and Steve Locke will also be departing.

DeSilva, who was absent from the team’s awards banquet on March 23, declined to explain the circumstances behind his departure, but had warm words for the team.

“The reaction I’ve received from the players, who have all contacted me since that announcement, certainly touched me more than those players will ever know,” DeSilva said. “And it shows really how much of an impact we have on these

Woolwich’s busy recreation associations may soon have some staff help if the township is successful in obtaining a grant for a part-time community recreation coordinator.

Having won approval from council this week, the recreation department will submit an application to Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund (OSRCF). The township will be seeking some $44,000 over two years to put toward the position.

If the grant comes through, the coordinator would provide services to Woolwich’s various recreation associations, supporting the volunteers who run the community centres, director of recreation and facilities Karen Makela told councillors meeting March 26. At last Saturday afternoon’s affair, team officials were not at a loss for praise – especially for forward Jake Weidner, who took home five trophies. On his own, he won Top Scorer, the Coaches Cup (for perseverance and dedication to hockey), the Don Duke Memorial Award for Sportsmanship and Lead-

ership, and the Sugar Kings Alumni Award for Playoff MVP. With Brady Campbell, he shared the Sugar Kings Memorial Award for Regular Season MVP. “You’ve got to look at Jake Weidner and Brady Campbell,” said Dean DeSilva. “Any time you have 20-year-olds who come in and they’re the hardest-working players on ice, that just shows their character and that raises everybody else up around them.”

Putting a formal close to their 2012-2013 season, the Elmira Sugar Kings held their end-ofyear awards banquet on March 23. And with a difficult year in the rearview mirror, the club is looking back with mixed emotions.

“I think, overall, we had a pretty good year,” said Keith Stewart, director of

hockey operation. “People have to realize that we had six pretty big injuries.”

After winning 20 of their 33 games before Christmas, the Elmira team ranked at the top of the Midwestern Conference of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

“All of a sudden we lose the team’s leading scorer – Brady Campbell shattered his cheekbone in a practice,” remembered

Stewart. “And the next night in Listowel, we lose a couple guys to long-term concussions, and then the Saturday night we lose one of our top defencemen, Justin Cooke, who broke his ankle. And after that, we still had a couple more concussions.”

Of their 18 regular season games in 2013, the Kings won just five, with a mostly young lineup tasked to replace more seasoned col-

leagues. Still, as anyone who saw the games can attest, the boys didn’t go down without a fight.

“That’s a lot of depth to replace, and I thought the remaining kids did a pretty good job pulling up their socks,” said Stewart. “We were competitive in every game – a couple of lopsided games, but other than that, the boys competed hard every night.”

“With all the injuries, they could have folded and packed it in, and they didn’t. … From a player perspective, by far this was the most enjoyable team I’ve coached, because of such strong work ethic.”

James Mildon was one of the players whose injuries kept him off the ice for a stretch of the season, but DeSilva said he provided

strong encouragement to the team even when he was missing from action.

“Nobody outside the room would have known the impact, but he had just an incredible influence on the players.”

In addition, DeSilva praised forward Cass Frey.

“It was such a tough group of guys, and that rests squarely on his shoulders,” he said of the team captain.

When asked how the 2012-13 roster compared to other teams he has coached, DeSilva had plenty of praise. “This team has been the most enjoyable, from the personalities of the boys off the ice, their tightness as a group, their pure work ethic, heart and character.

I can’t ask any more from any young men than what we received from these guys.”

He added, “When we went against the Cambridge team in the playoffs, it was very deep. …

Our guys battled with all their heart and all their will to the very end. A couple of bounces here and there, it could have been a completely different score.”

Using real-world experience would help improve the turkey call OPEN COUNTRY Man has gone to the moon and back, made powerful computers that can fit in the palm of your hand and even taught a monkey to wear overalls and smile while holding a pitchfork for greeting card photos.

Despite all these great achievements, we still have not yet created the perfect turkey call.

Oh, sure, call manufacturers will tell you they have, but believe me this is not the case. Trust me.

Because I am a shrewd investor, I own several high-end turkey calls. And not one of them sounds like a turkey call should sound.

I believe this is because we are always trying to imitate one of three things: a lovesick hen, a threatening gobbler, or a wimpy jake who is about to make a pass at a lovesick hen.

Think about it. All these things are based on calling in a mature old gobbler who is looking for love.

Now think of all the middle aged men you know.

That’s right: not one of them is going to come running for a desperate

woman or a fight.

That’s why we need to create a call that appeals to the old gobbler’s maturity level. The idea is to take the focus off of mating. Let’s be honest, how many of us know middle-aged men who are dying to father more offspring?

See what I mean?

This is why we need to develop calls that appeal more to the mature male turkey.

For instance, if we could create a call that convinced an old tom that there would be a little peace and quiet when they got here, because the hens were out shopping and youngsters

were away, they’d come walking in at a brisk pace.

I would also suggest that any call which imitates the snoring and deep breathing made by a middle-aged turkey having a good long afternoon nap would draw in the old boys like gangbusters.

If that same call also produced grumbling sounds that imitated disparaging comments about the younger generation so much the better.

Another call I would like to see is one that sounded like middle-aged male turkeys carping about how things were more difficult but far better when

they were kids. And if you could use it a different way – perhaps by pressing down on a button – to mimic them saying “Back then, we worked hard but, you know, we had fun,” or even “We had respect for things,” or even, “The kids these days don’t know what good music is,” so much the better.

These are the kind of calls that appeal to middleaged creatures of all species all the time. The current lineup of calls is based solely on breeding, which, if I recall correctly, is backbreaking work. That’s why they are successful at the beginning of the season,

but less so as the season progresses.

No, it’s better to have calls that discuss the weather, sports, the price of grain or how the world is going to hell in a hand basket. Then you’ve got something that universally appeals to mature males – long after their sciatica has started acting up after a morning with a hen or two.

These are just a few of the changes that I would implement to make calls more effective in the hands of the average turkey hunter.

Sex may sell. But only if you are trying to attract the right demographic.

The two-year project would be eligible for a grant of up to 60 per cent of the cost. Makela estimated the total cost at $77,000, including $28,000 in overhead and programming expenses – most of which are already accounted for – that would be treated as in-kind support for the position.

Under the OSRCF formula, the township would have to pay a minimum of 10 per cent of the total outlay in cash costs, meaning a budget of $7,800. Makela called that a cost-efficient way to address current demands from the rec. as-

sociations.

The job, which could start in July and run through March 2015, comes as the department is looking to put more emphasis on programming, said Makela. For years, the focus has been on building new facilities – from a community centre in Maryhill through to the Woolwich Memorial Centre in Elmira – but that work is now complete.

With the departure of deputy director Brian Detzler, who’s joined neighbouring Centre Wellington Township as managing director of community services, the department

can look at restructuring to meet the new goals, she added. Detzler was originally hired to oversee the township’s aggressive capital building campaign.

“It’s a time of transition.”

The part-time recreation coordinator would be a contract job, not a permanent addition to the staff, as the department reviews its longer-term needs.

“There’s no obligation on our part to keep them?” asked Coun. Allan Poffenroth, who also wanted to know if the job would require paying benefits and other perks.

The answer is no in both cases, said Makela.

They can prepare something bouncy for Charlie Chaplin, or something adventurous for Douglas Fairbanks, or something romantic for Rudolph Valentino. But what, exactly, is the VOC Silent Film Harmonic to do when it encounters Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali’s surrealist landmark Un Chien Andalou at the Registry Theatre on April 11?

With five years of performances under their belt, to such silent perennials as Nosferatu, The Battleship Potemkin, and The Man Who Laughs, Harms has found the collaboration increasingly comfortable.

“You start to trust what everybody else is going to do,” said Harms. “We’re still not exactly sure what everybody else is playing, but we can trust each other that there’s not going to be anyone who’s going to veer off into a polka.”

Which, come to think of it, may possibly do Bunuel and Dali justice.

Even with intense competition from Christmas, Easter remains one of the favourite holidays in the hearts and minds of kids and families everywhere.

What makes this holiday so special? “I think a lot of people from a Christian faith have a special time for Easter, but I also think it’s one of those occasions during the year that is very much a family time,” said Wilbur. “It’s a chance for families to get together, and we like to play a role in some of that.”

What about chocolate?

“For kids, it probably has a little different meaning,” he allowed.

That’s all well and good, but isn’t it hard to sell kids

The Easter spirit came early on March 28 at the Wellesley Mennonite Church preschool, as the tots launched a holiday-themed “Hop-a-thon” to raise money and awareness for muscular dystrophy.

[WILL SLOAN] on the concept of the Easter Bunny? Considering that his mythology is far less detailed and nuanced than that of St. Nick?

“It amazes me, but we will have a visit from the Easter Bunny as part of the event,” interjected Wilbur. “I’m

amazed at how popular he is. They flock to him. They want to shake his hand, have their picture taken with him … He does attract a lot of attention.”

Wait a minute: this is taking place the day before Easter. The furry one will be

taking time out of his busy schedule to visit the quiet village of St. Jacobs? And not only that, but he’ll find time to pop by St. Clements and Elmira as well?

“That’s right. I think they appreciate that,” said Wilbur.

The accidental role model

Putting together a few favourites for Easter brunch

Bloomingdale resident Natalie Stevanus’ long list of activities and accomplishments lead her to being selected as one of this year’s Canadian Down Syndrome Heroes Will sloan Natalie Stevanus is a figure skater, award-winning photographer, fashion model, swimmer, and – during the day – a dining room manager at Williams Fresh Café. Compared to the many of us who have trouble sustaining just one hobby, the 29-year-old Bloomingdale resident is a genuine renaissance woman. All of which is even more remarkable considering that Natalie has Down Syndrome.

“She’s always striving to do something else,” said Linda Stevanus, Natalie’s mother. “With Williams, she got hired as part of a job fair, and once she got comfortable doing that job, she wanted to be manager.”

Natalie’s drive has made her a success, and to the Canadian Down Syndrome Society, it has made her a role model. Last week, the Society selected Stevanus as one of its five Canadian Down Syndrome Heroes of 2013. The organization seeks to honour “people with Down Syndrome who lead exceptional lives and teach others to ‘See the Ability.’”

Natalie’s biggest claim to fame in the community has been as a figure skater – a sport she has been practicing seriously since age 15. In 2011, she became the only figure skater in the region to compete in the Special Olympics Provincial Winter Games in Thunder Bay. She also intends to donate the $500 award money to the Wool-

wich Figure Skating Club in Elmira, of which she is a member.

Why did Natalie choose to become a figure skater?

“I like the beautiful costumes,” she responded.

“She looked at the speed skaters and their pads, and she didn’t like that,” added Linda.

Natalie’s athletics had previously won her a prize at the K-W Oktoberfest Women of the Year awards.

Her success is not limited to the rink. She has passed courses at the Gemini Modelling School, the GC School of Wedding Planning and Conestoga College, where she studied photography. And, since 2009, Stevanus has worked in a managerial role in her workplace, Williams Fresh Coffee in Waterloo. A managerial role requires a lot of responsibility; does she ever feel pressure?

“No pressure,” said Natalie.

But, of course, with a managerial position comes considerable responsibility. Does she ever find herself underestimated by colleagues and co-workers, required to work extrahard to gain their confidence?

The answer is yes, said Natalie. “Natalie is very perceptive of how people feel towards her,” said Linda Stevanus. “If she gets the feeling that they’re looking at her differently, role model | 33

RECIPE NOTES Easter is now here, believe it or not. I know Wiarton Willy has been getting a lot of grief about his prediction, but spring is in the air: I’m seeing the little shoots of green in the garden, and I’m looking forward to all those early blooming bulbs.

Quiche is a natural, easygoing way to do brunch.

Creating a show-stopping brunch includes a variety of food: fresh fruit, local meats, perhaps a few appetizers ... the possibilities are endless. I suppose that’s why I enjoy making them so much.

Working in many golf clubs and restaurants gave me plenty of practice. I would say French toast is my personal favourite. If this kind of thing stresses you out, plan ahead – there are lots of recipes that can be made ahead and just put in the oven the next day.

“I don’t know!” Natalie laughed.

“We tried to work through what a hero is,” said Linda to Natalie. “Do you feel like you’re a hero when you figure skate, when you’re out on the ice?

Or do you feel like when you’re out there you just enjoy what you’re doing?”

“The second,” replied Natalie.

The awards are nice, but Natalie Stevanus is not really in it for the glory. “The thing about what Natalie does is, she just enjoys what she’s doing,” said Linda.

Banana Bread French Toast 1 loaf banana bread 1/3 cup milk 1 tsp vanilla 3 tbsp maple syrup 3 eggs 2 bananas, sliced 1 knob butter 3 tbsp brown sugar 2 tbsp butter shots

Slice banana loaf into

1-1/2-inch slices; Whisk together milk, eggs, vanilla and maple syrup; Place pan on medium heat, drizzle oil in pan; Place the banana bread into the egg mix, pull out immediately and place into the pan. Cook in pan until golden brown and the egg is cooked; In another pan, place 1 knob of butter in pan and sugar, allow the sugar to dissolve, keep on a medium heat to avoid burning the sugar. Place sliced bananas in the pan and allow to colour slightly; Deglaze the pan with buttershots liquor and allow to evaporate; Place French toast on a plate and add the bananas on the top. Serve with local maple syrup.

1 cup of water 2/3 cup sugar 3 thumbs of ginger 1 vanilla bean 1/2 cantaloupe, diced 1/4 pineapple, diced Handful of blueberries 9 strawberries, sliced 1 kiwi, sliced 1/2 mango, sliced 6 mint leaves, chopped

Combine water, sugar, ginger and vanilla in pot, allow to simmer for 10 minutes, then remove from heat and steep for 10 minutes; Strain off the ginger and cool the simple syrup in the fridge; Place fruit in bowl and pour ginger syrup over the fruit. Add the mint just before serving.
