Facing the prospect of foregoing some $23,000 in revenue, councillors deferred a decision until later this month.

The non-profit group will build a pair of semi-detached homes in Wellesley Village, with construction slated to begin in a month’s time. In a pitch to council Tuesday night, the organization asked for the fees to be dropped to help lower the final cost of the two homes.

The largest portion would be development charges, which sit at just over $8,000 per unit. The fees are intended to cover future municipal expenditures related to growth, with the developers – ultimately the buyers, of course – paying for the cost of each new addition to the building stock.

Tracey Appleton, chair of Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region, explained the process by which low-income families become owners of houses built by the organization and its volunteers.

Houses aren’t given to families at no charge, but rather, through alternative forms of payment and interest-free mortgages, she noted.

Grants to community groups spark debate among Wellesley councillors LIZ BEVAN WELLESLEY TOWNSHIP’S CHARITABLE DONATIONS were under the microscope this week, with councillors questioning the necessity of some contributions.

Under discussion were grants totalling $8,585 – from a $13,000 fund for such contributions – from

the 2017 budget. Recipients include Community Care Concepts, Wilmot Family Resource Centre, Woolwich Community Resource Centre and the Woolwich Counselling Centre, with a smaller ($360) donation to the Wellesley Township Horticultural Society proving to be a stumbling block.

said she was unsure that the horticultural society should be included, suggesting the organization failed to meet the criteria set under the approved donation policy.

“To me, plants aren’t a vital service,” she said. “I am not in agreement with the horticultural society being a necessity. When we did the budget, we talked about

things that were important in the community and were struggling. I don’t think this is one of those.”

She said she hasn’t seen evidence of the society reaching all corners of the township. To Wagner, charitable donations from the municipality should benefit all residents as much as possible.

“Do they plant flowers in Wellesley or Linwood?

I know they don’t come to Hawkesville. We don’t have anything in Hawkesville showing flowers,” she said.

Coun Carl Smit agreed.

“I just want to reiterate what I said when we were doing the budget. I don’t think we should be in the business of giving away money. I don’t think it is our responsibility,” he said.

“I have never seen them in St. Clements.”

Mayor Joe Nowak thought differently, arguing township beautification was an important part of the horticultural society’s work.

“They provide some landscape, expertise, flowers, that sort of thing,” he said. “They do provide a service to the township. It beautifies your community, it attracts tourism. There is a whole list of reasons that plants are great for the township.”

Beyond that specific grant, Coun. Herb Neher asked why so much of the budgeted donation amount was already being doled out.

“It is only a quarter of the way through the year and we have already committed ourselves to two-thirds of our charity funding,” he said. “Is that usual? Is this normal?”

Township treasurer Teresa Bisch explained that the township was going to be handling donations a bit differently this year.

“In prior years, we have designated that money and given it out in the fall,” she said. “This way, they know what they are getting, and then if there are other requests that come up, you will know if there are still funds in the budget. That was the idea.”

Council eventually approved donations of $2,000 to Community Care Concepts, Wilmot Family Resource Centre, Woolwich Community Services and Woolwich Counselling Centre, $150 to the Elmira District Secondary School Scholarship Fund, $75 to the Royal Canadian Legion for a wreath on Remembrance Day and $360 to the horticultural society.

Other donations to the St. Clements Santa Claus Parade, the Wellesley Christmas Tyme Parade and the Wellesley North Easthope Agricultural Society were deferred to allow for the groups to pursue alternative funding later in the year.

“There are some other funding avenues for the fair and the two parades that we are looking into,” said township CAO Rik Lowagie.

International trips back on for students in the region, board decides LIZ BEVAN A CONTROVERSIAL DECISION TO halt overseas trips having been reconsidered, the Waterloo Region District School Board is still focusing on safety when it comes to students leaving the country.

With a change in political climate in the United States, and government warnings about travel to some European countries, WRDSB spokesman Nick Manning says there are many factors to consider when deciding if some trips will go ahead as planned.

Currently, all international trips are a go for district students, but that wasn’t always the case.

“We made the decision earlier in the school year to cancel trips to Belgium and France, and then at the request of parents, students and teachers, reviewed the decision and that was all about making sure that we preserve that safety of all of our travellers.”

Elmira District Secondary School students are scheduled to hop on a plane headed for France and Belgium next month, along with hundreds of other students across Canada, to commemorate the anniversary of Vimy Ridge. Currently, the Canadian government warns travellers to, “exercise a high degree of caution,” due to the terrorist attacks in Belgium and France in the last couple of years.

Manning says the trips could still be cancelled if the government decides to advise against unnecessary travel to students’ destinations.

“With trips going overseas and within Canada, we are constantly monitoring these trips and changing them if there is a change to the security situation at the destination, that would prompt us to reconsider,” he said. “For example, if the government of Canada changed the travel advisory to warn against non-essential travel, that would prompt us to cancel trips. We want these trips to go ahead and give the students really rich learning experiences, but we need to make sure that we can preserve safety.”

Star struck, she’s long turned her eyes to the heavens Having wanted to be an astronaut, EDSS grad Anna Grinberg now working for the European Space Agency encourages current students to follow their passions WHITNEY NEILSON

ANNA GRINBERG MAY NOT have achieved her dream of becoming an astronaut, but working with them at the European Space Agency in Germany is a close second.

The Elmira District Secondary School graduate spoke to a number of classes at EDSS last week about science.

She says one of the most interesting questions asked by a student is what would happen if a baby was born in space.

“Babies learn to walk, to sit up and to crawl and to walk all against gravity, so I don’t know if you have a kid born in space, you don’t have gravity to help you learn all these things. Developmentally, I think gravity is very important.”

Grinberg studied at the University of Waterloo before she attended the International Space University in Strasburg, France where she completed a year-long Masters, followed

by an internship. Every year 50 students from countries all over the world come to study specifically space and how the industry works.

After that she met her husband and he got a job in Germany. She came back to Canada, but eventually decided to join him in Germany, where they have a larger space program. She’s been in Germany for nine years but hopes to move back to Canada.

“Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be an astronaut, but the likelihood of becoming an astronaut is really tiny, like two out of every 10 years.

I just wanted to work in the industry, so basically all my schooling was geared to somehow getting a job in space, engineering, studying human physiology for the space industry.”

As an engineer, she works with scientists to design and make hardware to support their experiments. For example, when scientists are in the

Cultivation System, which is permanently on the space station. She describes it as about the size of two beer fridges.

It has two centrifuges, which are important because that’s a way they can make gravity.

It also provides atmosphere and water. Then they’re able to compare microgravity and gravity in space to see how the plants are reacting.

They also launched little experiment containers, eight of them, each about the size of a shoebox.

They have lots of sensors to monitor what amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide they’re getting, as well as a camera and a video camera to watch how they grow. She says a good part of the data comes after, though.

lab they have everything they need. But that’s not the case once in space.

“You need hardware that can for example give medium or nutrition to plants, or you need somehow to turn on illumination, so we build hardware that makes this little system for their experiments.”

A highlight of her career so far was watching an experiment called Gravity 2 fly. The experiment looked at lentil seeds, how they grow in the first 30 hours of microgravity.

She worked on the operations side of that project for seven years, focusing on how to launch the hardware, how to get the crew to work with it, and how to get it to work at their facility.

“I think training astronauts is always exciting. It’s amazing. Especially because most of them are so friendly and such real people, they’re really easy to talk to.”

Wellesley eliminates its committee of adjustment, with councillors taking on those duties LIZ BEVAN WELLESLEY TOWNSHIP’S COMMITTEE OF adjustment is no more after councillors decided to take on the responsibility themselves.

The committee of adjustment typically deals with minor variances to the township’s zoning by-

law, including the likes of property severances, rights of ways and easements. As in other municipalities, the current committee is made up of citizens appointed to the position.

Meeting this week, councillors opted to disband the committee and assume its duties.

The current members of

the committee didn’t go down without a fight, however. With council meeting Tuesday night to discuss the changes, chair Dennis Weber and co-chairEugene Bersenas made it clear they weren’t happy.

Bersenas called the move disrespectful and unwarranted after the work he and the rest of

the members had put into their work on the committee. From his perspective, it appeared as though committee members were being pushed out unceremoniously.

“I am appalled by the manner in which this whole situation is coming forward. That the services of the committee of adjustment is dissolving is abhorrent,” he told councillors. “We have volunteered our time and effort to the township and we are deserving of respect. I don’t think that is asking too much. We are committed, and to be shot down like this is not right.”

The committee was only notified of the upcoming change a few days before the meeting, and Weber said the current committee should have had a chance to review the township’s reasoning ahead of time.

“I have to express my

dismay that we were not notified of this meeting well ahead of time, especially with such an important topic. You are turfing us, essentially,” he said.

“We weigh our decisions carefully and if there are concerns, I would love to hear them. This is an important topic.”

The committee met on Mar. 8, with township staff in attendance, but weren’t informed of the intention to dissolve.

Coun. Herb Neher felt Bersena’s and Weber’s feelings were justified.

“I think we owe these people more professionalism and there should have been sometime when we give them the information, give them a month or two to look at it, and come back to council,” he said.

“I have a real problem with the process on this. Regardless of what decision we make, I think owe these

people something, at least give them the opportunity to make their case as well.”

The mayor and township staff didn’t see it the same way, however.

“Professionalism is a two-way street,” said Mayor Joe Nowak, adding that the opportunity was presented to the committee to have a discussion on the matter.

CAO Rik Louwagie confirmed the chance was there, and it was an opportunity missed.

“I would just like to note that I requested a meeting with Eugene and he declined without the whole committee present. Then we had a meeting with everyone, and it was flatly said that we would not be discussing these issues,” he explained.

Councillors then voted to absorb the duties of the committee of adjustment into their regular duties.

“It is not policy at this point, but what we did do for the trips that are traveling to Europe, is we put additional risk mitigation measures. We have asked the supervisors of those trips to take training to identify risk and to manage it overseas,” said Manning.

“We have worked with our insurance providers to make sure we have the right levels of insurance, the students have got travel tips and have taken a workshop as well, so they know how to act.”

When it comes to travelling across the border to

the United States, Manning says it is less about safety and more about uncertainty. EDSS does not have any trips to the U.S. on the books at the moment, however, there are nine other trips planned for schools in the district.

“Most of it will be crossing a land border on busses. We haven’t yet asked those trips to take international travel workshops, but we are making sure, for example, that they have got a good understanding of the plans on the trip, roaming plans for cell phones and those kinds of things.

Then we work through individually what steps they

will take if they do find a problem at the border. One of our trustees, John Hendry, raised the question a couple of weeks ago, ‘what would happen if one student is turned back at the U.S. border?’ That is for individual schools to decide.”

Manning says he hasn’t seen an example of a student backing out of a trip due to security and safety concerns, yet.

“We just want people to think that through and make a conscious decision about how they engage in these trips and I think that we are seeing people do that across the board, very successfully,” he said.

An online facilities booking option is operational, recreation director Brad Voisin told councillors meeting this week.

As of Mar. 14, individuals and groups can now book and pay for township facilities such as baseball diamonds and ice rinks on the new ACTIVENET program.

Users can see which facilities are

available, the facility features, capacity, contact information, pricing and more.

The requests are sent to the recreation department for final confirmation. The program allows facility users to pay for their ice time online.

Wellesley selects new logo The Wellesley Township logo contest has come to a close with a winner selected at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

The winning logo was designed by Jolene MacDonald, a resident of the Village of Wellesley. The new corporate logo is a stylized apple with a farm field inside the apple and in the foreground.

The township decided to look into a new corporate logo back in August, and after reviewing the nine entries, MacDonald’s apple was unanimously voted as the best of the bunch, with a few minor tweaks in mind.

Local artists, marketing experts and others were on the evaluation team for the logo contest.

The winning entry earned MacDonald a $1,000 honorarium for her work,

and the logo is being sent to a graphic designer for final touch-ups before it is put into widespread use throughout the township.

Interest up at historical society More than 280 volunteer hours were put in to Wellesley Township Heritage and Historical Society work, expanding the society’s collection and membership.

The society acquired 14 items of note in the past year, including Amish wooden benches, a new batch of Ottman family photos, Hawkesville school pictures from the 1950s and more,

curator Nancy Maitland told township councillors meeting this week.

There are also plans to get some more foot traffic through the historical society, located at the Wellesley branch of the Region of Waterloo Library. The society has upped their online presence and fielded nearly 50 research requests. The website saw some 400 hits per month, with 78 per cent of those visitors counted as new viewers.

In the coming year, the Wellesley Township Heritage and Historical Society will also increase the presence in the community, participating in Doors Open in September, she noted.

Snowmobile fatalities up sharply so far this year THE RETURN OF WINTRY conditions gives snowmobilers a chance to get out again, but it’s not been a good year safety-wise, police report.

As of last week, fatal snowmobile incidents had more than doubled the number at this time last season. The number of fatal incidents reached 20 for the season, compared to eight such incidents and 11 deaths at this point last year. Thirteen of the deaths have occurred within the past six weeks.

Seventeen men and three women, including a 16-year-old and an 11-yearold girl, have been killed to date.

Police are urging snowmobilers to stay off lakes and rivers, the conditions of which are deteriorating rapidly in many parts of the province.

The causes and contributing factors clearly reflect snowmobilers’ ongoing disregard for their own safety and that of their fellow riders and passengers: • Twelve of the deceased either collided with a tree, a rock, a •

snowbank, a road vehicle or another snowmobile.

Speeding excessively, too fast for the conditions and/or losing control of their snowmobiles were actions in nine of the incidents.

Four of the snowmobilers were travelling on frozen waterways.

Three of them encountered open water and the fourth fell through the ice.

Driver inattention was the primary cause of four fatalities.

A lone snowmobiler died of hypothermia after her snowmobile became stuck in the snow - a harsh reminder of what can happen when you do not pack an emergency kit for each ride.

The man allegedly spoke to a student and invited the student into his vehicle. The student ran away and notified staff. No one was injured. ship of Perth East. Police seized methamphetamine, cocaine, suboxone pills, and marijuana with an estimated street value of $17,750. Police also seized offence related property that consisted of drug trafficking paraphernalia and $3,050 cash. 9:21 AM | Perth County OPP were notified of an aggressive driver on Perth Road 119 south of the Town of Milverton. The driver of a silver Mitsubishi car had been tailgating a fully marked Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) pickup that had been southbound on Perth Road 119 and then passed it at a high rate of speed. The MNR vehicle was then forced to brake to allow the car back into the lane to avoid a collision from occurring with another vehicle that had been oncoming. The Mitsubishi car was located shortly after and a 21-year-old North Perth man was charged with ‘careless driving.’

“We sell the homes to the families at fair market value, and instead of a down payment, we have the adults in the families provide what we call sweat equity,” she said. “That is 250 hours of volunteer work in their community or with Habitat for Humanity.”

The organization has been operating in the region since 1988, but this marks the first time it will have a project in Wellesley.

Appleton says they recognize the need for affordable housing in the rural areas of the region and that is where the Wellesley plan comes in.

“We want to extend our reach beyond Kitchener.

The project build manager Darrell Bauman was on hand to describe the homes Habitat for Humanity will be building.

“We have people lined up

to volunteer,” he said, adding that the project would take about six months to finish. “We will be finished roughly when the snow flies. It is going to be a lot of fun and a lot of work, but we are going to end up with a well-built house.”

Karen Redman, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region, said the enthusiasm for the project in Wellesley was unmatched.

teerism in the region. We have been running to keep up with it,” she said. “There is a need for this kind of housing, and not everyone wants to live in Kitchener.

We are ecstatic to be in Wellesley.”

The build will begin in the next few weeks at a Queen’s Bush Road site.

Council is expected to address the organization’s request when staff comes back with a recommendation at its Mar. 28 meeting.

Maple producers not immune to climate change, say WLU researchers Though coming earlier, the sap is plentiful today.

A century from now, that might not be the case Maple syrup is readily available at grocery stores and roadside vendors, but climate change may take a toll on its availability in years to come according to new research coming out of Wilfrid Laurier University.

WHITNEY NEILSON FOR WEEKS, MAPLE PRODUCERS have been happily tapping away at their trees, turning sap into liquid gold.

But in the future, say 100 years down the road, there could be less maple syrup to go around.

Researchers at Wilfrid Laurier University have been studying the effects of climate change on sugar maple trees since 2010.

Bryce Gunson, project manager of the Laurierbased Resilient Communities Research Collaborative, says they really kicked up their research efforts in 2012 when they received funding from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

The idea for the study came from the project’s principle investigator, Brenda Murphy, when she visited a maple operation near Sudbury.

“They were noticing a lot of impacts on their trees, mostly around the timing of the season. The guy’s been doing it for 50 or 60 years and he obviously knows his sugar bush well and just noticed a lot of changes in the trees,” Gunson said.

He says she also noticed there wasn’t a lot of research, especially in Ontario, around this, despite maple being a significant crop.

Some producers are taking active measures to increase the biodiversity of their forest, like planting different species, but Gunson says there hasn’t been a lot of immediate action because for the most part there’s not much a maple farmer can do, per se.

“I think a lot of farmers know that the sap can run a little bit earlier than they think and I know in 2013 that spring the season came so early that some of the farmers didn’t get their

bushes tapped in time and they completely missed their opportunity to make maple syrup, so it was a big impact to them,” Gunson said of the maple syrup season that seems to start earlier every year.

Gunson says there’s still plenty of room for market expansion in Ontario because only 0.04 of the usable trees have been tapped.

Because of the warmer temperatures there’s more stress being placed on the trees.

“From what we see, the more stresses that you’re placing on the trees and the timing of the seasons being affected by climate change and the precipitation patterns, all these different things that could lead to problems, increased pests and diseases for the trees – any time if you’re talking long term the trees will be stressed in one way or another and that could certainly affect maple syr-

up down the road,” Gunson said.

They’ve also been doing some historical work, tracing the historical importance of maple syrup to Indigenous communities. On the flip side of that, they’ve been looking forward 100 years with mapping and climate change modeling to try to predict what will happen to the maple crop.

Something that’s surprised him in doing the research has been the level of interest. He’s met farmers working to do their part against climate change by buying maple syrup equipment which produces less CO2.

“It’s such an iconic Canadian product and the thought of us losing it, we use it really as a good example of something real world and tangible that could be lost due to climate change.”

He can’t say for certain whether climate change will impact the sap supply

over the next two decades, but a century from now, he’s much more likely to say yes.

They also participate in Climate Change SOS: Save Our Syrup, where they take kids to the sugar bush to learn about maple, to connect them to the knowledge that maple syrup is part of a broader system, and there’s a lot more to the industry than just people selling maple syrup at the end of their driveway.

“I think education for us through that has been really important because there’s a lot of value to bringing kids out to the sugar bush to learn about maple syrup itself, but it’s also important to teach them about the importance of maple to rural communities, especially places like Elmira where the one-day festival brings in all this money and all that money is used for funding all these different programs.”

Grinberg attributes some of her success to her years spent at EDSS. She says she enjoyed being able to do drama and sports in high school, while also studying science and math.

“The education I got at Elmira was amazing. I had great teachers. I think I just had teachers who were really patient and interested and taught well. I never heard a teacher say ‘that’s not possible.’”

She was also part of the Canadian Space Agency astronaut selection, but unfortunately didn’t make it into the top 72.

The Conestogo native usually returns to Canada once a year. She’s back now for a while because of maternity leave.

She encourages high school students to pursue whatever they’re passionate about.

“Try it and go for it. With a science and engineering degree you can do so much. I think practically speaking I never knew if I’d end up actually working in space and I was lucky that it worked out, but just try it and don’t think you can’t do it.”

She also foresees a big change in space exploration in the future with Elon Musk announcing he’ll orbit the moon with two people paying to accompany him as astronauts.

“Opening up space will I think, first of all, make people more interested in it, but also we’ll see industries we never thought would happen before. … Every so often it’s nice to be reminded how exciting life is. The reason I like space is because there’s still so much to explore and so much we’re trying to figure out.

And the same thing exists on Earth, for sure.”

Free tax preparation service a popular WCS offering Woolwich Community Services has volunteers standing by to help low-income residents get their returns filed WHITNEY NEILSON IN THE MIDST OF tax season, low-income residents are encouraged to take advantage of Woolwich Community Services’ free income tax program.

Wendell Prime is one of three trained volunteers who run the program at WCS. Individuals who make $30,000 or less annually are eligible, as are couples who make $40,000 or less combined.

Eligible residents can call to book 45-minute appointments with the volunteers.

Prime says the program is well-used for most of March and April, but they have room for more.

“We have been basically full from the start. And I know the last couple of years it was the same thing, through March it was really, really full and maybe slowed down a little bit the first half of April and then it got full again as you get to the deadline.”

He advises everyone to file annually because if you owe money Canada Revenue Agency will find out, and if you have lowincome you’re eligible for GST and Trillium rebates, which can provide some much needed funds.

“It can certainly be $1,000 over the year that they would get back. So it is important that they get

Prime has done his own taxes since he was 18 and enjoys being able to provide the same service for others. He enjoys numbers so much he even generated some Excel spreadsheets a decade ago to forecast his own retirement to budget based on

his and his wife’s income.

This is his third year volunteering with the income tax program. He’s also helped out with their volunteer driving program for six years.

“On a personal level I’m very busy once the weather clears up. We have an acre of property, lots of gardens, a yard to take care of and I do a lot of outside activities. So

I’m looking at it and saying this fills in the last two months of winter that I have time.”

He also volunteered at The Working Centre’s income tax program in Kitchener for two years after reading in their newsletter they were looking for volunteers.

But for the Woolwich resident, volunteering with WCS in their new

building with an office for privacy, is a perfect fit.

He says he plans to keep coming back because it’s of interest to him, but also because he particularly enjoys helping two demographics – firstly, senior citizens.

“They’re so grateful,” he said.

He’s also interested in helping young adults who are just starting out on

their own, so he can help teach them how it’s done.

“I just figure it’s a little thing I can do.”

The program started Mar. 1 and finishes on Apr. 30, the deadline for filing 2016 taxes. Volunteers are available at WCS’ office on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. To book an appointment call WCS at 519-669-5139.

Trying to make an impact in a rocky housing market EVEN BEFORE THE LATEST boom in prices, affordable housing was at a premium in this area of the province. The spillover effect of unsustainable prices in Toronto has expanded well beyond the GTA, worsening the situation.

The townships aren’t immune, with housing costs that often exceed the region’s cities. And when it comes to the rental market, supply has always been very limited. In Woolwich, there has been some expansion in housing for seniors and, now, MennoHomes is taking applications for units at its Elmira project. In a similar vein, the first Habitat for Humanity project in Wellesley Township was up for discussion at council this week.

Using volunteer labour and donations of money and materials, Habitat constructs homes for qualified families.

Often, this is the only route for partner families to gain home ownership. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving fund, which is used to build more houses.

One a rental, the other ownership, both projects take aim at the affordability gap, which is a growing issue across much of the province and, indeed, the country.

Last year, for instance, a survey by the Ontario NonProfit Housing Association found more than 171,000 Ontario households are waiting for a home that they can afford, roughly split into thirds between single adults/ couples (37 per cent), seniors (32 per cent) and families (31 per cent). Waiting lists have grown by more than 45,000 households in 12 years, and applicants face an average wait of nearly four years. In many communities, the wait is much longer.

Of course, there are far more people finding themselves priced out of the market, particularly where buying a home is concerned.

Rising prices for land push up the cost of development.

Rising prices for both new and resale homes discourage buyers and increase the debt load on those in the game.

Rising prices drive up rental costs at a time when fewer units are being built and demand already outstrips supply.

To help cool the market here, the federal government has been tightening up borrowing rules that reduce the risk of people defaulting on their mortgages and help ease the unsustainable upward pressure on home prices. A series of reports has raised doubts about the sustainability of a decade-long upward trend that slowed only marginally during the worst of the 2008 recession.

Led by ongoing hikes in Vancouver and Toronto, average home prices remain far out of reach of many residents.

None of that sounds sustainable. Some economists and market watchers are waiting on a correction. Still, there are plenty of us who see housing as a safe investment, unlike, for instance, the stock market, which remains volatile. Both markets are a gamble, however, and both were and continue to be heavily manipulated by the financial sector, the very industry responsible for the systemic corruption at the root of our economic woes.

In the long-term, decreasing demand is the best option.

For that, a falling population is key.

As demand falls, so too do prices for both rentals and sales. Likewise, there is less call for new construction, the best way to halt the sprawl municipalities decry all the while reveling in the increased revenues.

For those who didn’t head south, there’s a three-season extravaganza during a March Break spent at home.

A short generation in Scotland, where referendum talk is back WORLD AFFAIRS MAYBE THEY REACH SEXUAL maturity very young in Scotland. What else could explain the fact that they are going to have another referendum on Scottish independence only three years after the last one?

The Scottish referendum on independence in 2014 was supposed to be a once-in-a-generation event.

That was the one thing that then-British prime minister David Cameron and thenScottish first minister Alex Salmond agreed on: even a one-vote majority would settle the matter for a generation.

In fact, the majority voting to stay in the United Kingdom was close to half a million. It couldn’t have been a clearer outcome. There was none of the obfuscation for which Quebec’s referendums on independence from Canada were famous (like the 106word question in the 1980 referendum that did not even mention the word “independence”).

The referendum in Scotland simply asked: “Should Scotland be an independent country” – and the Scots said No by a 55-45 per cent majority. But only 30 months later, the next generation of Scots must already have arrived.

Nicola Sturgeon, Alex Salmond’s successor as leader of the Scottish National Party and first minister of the Scottish government, announced on Monday that there will be a second referendum on Scottish independence in late 2018 or early 2019. She didn’t even have the grace to say best two out of three.

It’s Sturgeon’s job to promote the idea of independence, of course, but she needed a plausible pretext to demand a re-run of Scotland’s own referendum so soon. The English nationalists who committed the entire United Kingdom to leaving the European Union in last June’s referendum gave her that pretext: 53 per cent of the English voted to leave the EU, but 62 per cent of Scots voted to stay.

Why such a difference?

Because the “Little Englanders” who voted to leave

were seduced by the neoElizabethan fantasy of a swash-buckling, free-trading England that would stay rich by living on its wits.

(Unlike the real Elizabethan England of 400 years ago, whose major foreign source of income was piracy.)

Scotland was never a great power, and it views the European Union as an economic and political safe haven. A large majority of Scots have no desire to leave the EU – especially if they are being dragged out of it by the gravely deluded English.

So Nicola Sturgeon can reasonably say that there has been a “material change of circumstances” since the first Scottish referendum, and claim that this change justifies another one. However, her claim is seriously undermined by the fact that Scots are opposed to another referendum, even under current circumstances, by a threeto-two majority. The whole referendum process is just too painful and divisive.

Moreover, there has been another “material change of circumstances” that hurts the case for Scottish independence. Low oil prices

and the gradual depletion of the North Sea oil fields have cut the Scottish government’s tax take from North Sea oil revenue from $14.2 billion in 2008-09 to only $2.2 billion in 2015 and a mere $73 million this year.

The oil income that subsidised Scotland’s high social spending is finished.

Then there is the fact that the European Union is made up of sovereign states, and that such states instinctively cooperate to discourage and punish separatism in any of their members. Brussels has plainly stated that an independent Scotland would not automatically retain EU membership.

This is the “Barroso doctrine” – that if any part of an existing EU country becomes an independent state it has to apply for membership – and the European Commission has just reconfirmed that Scotland would be subject to this rule. The application process for new members normally takes many years.

So an independent Scotland could find itself outside the EU single market DYER | 10

A propaganda tool, social media part of the real fake news phenomenon EDITOR'S NOTES HOW FITTING WOULD IT be if Donald Trump – the Tweeter in Chief – helped fuel the long overdue decline of social media?

Already a dubious phenomenon, the ironically named social media sites – led by the likes of Facebook, Twitter and a thousand variants of Instagram and Pinterest – had descended into little more than partisan flame wars, blatant marketing and outright propaganda before the rise of Trump. They’ve only got worse since then.

Coupled with the undermining of privacy – embraced by governments not the least bit eager to protect their citizens – the sorry state of affairs should leave no one upset if they all suddenly went away tomorrow. Such would be a reason to rejoice, in fact.

There’s very little social about such sites, at least in the conventional human sense of the word. The occasional use is one thing –

though the sites, along with the ubiquitous Google, are mining data, joined by the likes of the NSA – but there are many people, many of them young, who spend too much time and think too little of the consequences.

More than just too much information, poor judgment and bullying, such time spent online has societal implications. In the case of the Trump, the Russians and electioneering, the dangers go well beyond the vestiges of Cold War sentiments.

Hacking, fake Twitter and Facebook accounts, online bots and a host of other technologies are increasingly part of an arsenal to sway public opinion on a massive scale, all based on psychological research being done by the same people investing in technology companies and the likes of right-wing websites such as Breitbart, with all its now-well-known connections to the Trump campaign.

Such companies are developing increasingly sophisticated tools for gathering up large swathes

where is clear. With this, a computer can actually do psychology, it can predict and potentially control human behaviour. It’s what the scientologists try to do but much more powerful.

It’s how you brainwash someone. It’s incredibly dangerous,” says the Psychometric Centre’s director, Prof. Jonathan Rust, in a recent interview in The Guardian.

“It’s no exaggeration to say that minds can be changed. Behaviour can be predicted and controlled.

I find it incredibly scary. I really do. Because nobody has really followed through on the possible consequences of all this. People don’t know it’s happening to them. Their attitudes are being changed behind their backs.”

Psychological tools, social media and the power of peer pressure were all at play in the U.S. elections last fall. Particularly prevalent was the use of bots to generate what we’d call real fake news and opinions – as opposed to what’s at play in the battle of Trump.

Hundreds and thousands of fake social media ac-

counts – Twitter and Facebook among them – and website manipulation tools were used to present a false narrative, inflate trends and sway public opinion.

The Oxford Internet Institute’s Unit for Computational Propaganda tracks ways social media was used in the run-up to the 2016 election, showing The Guardian how hundreds of websites were set up to blast out just a few links, articles that were all proTrump.

“This is being done by people who understand information structure, who are bulk buying domain names and then using automation to blast out a certain message. To make Trump look like he’s a consensus,” says Phil Howard, the institute’s director.

“That requires organisation and money. And if you use enough of them, of bots and people, and cleverly link them together, you are what’s legitimate. You are creating truth.”

When it comes to money, The Trump campaign – and the Brexit vote, for that matter – can be linked to libertarian billionaire Rob-

ert Mercer and to organizations such as the Media Research Center and Cambridge Analytica, along with ultra-conservative, rightwing organizations.

And, when it comes to hacking and Internet manipulation free of regulation, Russia is a wild west frontier.

Speaking of hacking and the perils of the Internet age, USA network’s Mr. Robot provides both a warning and some captivating television. Hacker-for-good Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) battles the forces of evil (literally in the case of the big, overarching company known as Evil Corp.) and his own demons. He hates Facebook for many of the same reasons.

The show’s creator, Sam Esmail, shares that disdain.

“I do hate Facebook, though I have a Facebook account. I’m sure Facebook can be used for good things, and they do philanthropy and that’s worthy of respect – but I think when a corporation decides to have a focus where you make money off KANNON | 10

of online data – the things you post and like on Facebook, for instance – in order to both predict your behaviour and to sway it.

This goes beyond targeted advertising, which is itself somewhat problematic.

Perhaps you were one of the six million people who filled out a Facebook personality quiz. Not just a fun time-waster, the quiz incorporates a psychological tool developed by scientists at Cambridge University’s Psychometric Centre. The data it provided, coupled with all the information on a typical profile, allowed computer programs to predict people’s personalities better than close friends and family ... or even themselves. Such is the power of computers that are able to correlate hundreds or thousands of seemingly trivial, unrelated actions we take online.

Beyond selling us stuff and feeding us more click bait, the real dangers lie in using the data as part of a propaganda effort.

because of Brexit, and outside the British single market as well because of its secession from the United Kingdom. Scotland exports four times as much to the ROUK (Rest of the United Kingdom) as it does to the EU, so this could spell economic disaster.

At the same time Scotland would also find itself outside NATO, the main Western alliance. As Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO secretary general, told Sky News: “By leaving the UK, (Scotland) would also leave NATO. Of course it is absolutely possible to apply for membership and then the allies will decide.” But that

would certainly take years.

The future looks distinctly unpromising for an independent Scotland that breaks away from the United Kingdom just as the UK pulls out of Europe.

(It hardly looks golden for England either.) The Scots didn’t vote yes for independence even when there was no Brexit in the offing. Why would they do it now?

One reason would simply be anger at the arrogance and stupidity of the Little Englanders who have presented them with this unpalatable choice. But there is little enthusiasm in Scotland for independence on these terms. Most Scots just wish the whole question would go away.

Elmira curling team wins Intermediate Provincial Championships Team Pidgeon emerges from close play in Fenelon Falls with victories over other Ontario qualifiers

LIZ BEVAN ELMIRA & DISTRICT CURLING Club’s own Team Pidgeon has won the 2017 Intermediate Provincial Championships.

From Mar. 1-5, the team, made up of Mary Pidgeon, Twyla Gilbert, Jackie Gidge, Colleen Coughlin, visited Fenelon Falls Curling Club to compete against seven other provincial qualifiers.

The tournament got off to a great start for Elmira, with a win against last year’s winner, Team Grant from Thornhill.

“That was a great start for us. It was a good feeling,” said Coughlin. “We just kind of got on a roll.”

The second game was a loss to a team they beat in 2016.

All eight teams at the tournament play a round robin, leaving the two teams with the best record to face off against each other in the final. This year was a bit different, however, with three teams tied in the top spot.

“At the end, there were three teams with a 5-2 record and we had each beat each other. It is a weird way to figure out who is in first.

We all deliver a rock at the same time on a different sheet, and whoever is the closest to the button, gets to the final. We won by an inch,” said Gilbert. “With

Most people live through these experiences, however.

It is the retrieving of waders we should be concerned about.

If you ask me, this perilous act is all the evidence required to prove fly anglers are among the bravest people on the planet. Don’t believe me? Well, talk to anyone who has ever stuck their head near the gaping maw of a set of used chest waders.

The mere mention of this will cause that person to stare blankly into the abyss and possibly convulse. And it’s even worse with neoprene waders, which only serve to separate the water outside the waders with the sweat forming inside.

Girls encouraged to give hockey a try

Twin Centre Hericanes hosting free sessions, aiming to recruit those who may have never played before WHITNEY NEILSON

WHILE MANY HOCKEY TEAMS are busy with playoffs or wrapping up their seasons, the Twin Centre Hericanes are also in fullon recruit mode for next season.

The girls’ hockey organization in Wellesley offered a chance for girls to try hockey for free last week-

end and will be hosting it again this weekend.

Twin Centre Hericanes registrar Claire Birrell explains current Hericanes are encouraged to bring a friend who’s never played hockey before to the come try hockey event on Sunday. The girls will start with a warm-up, practice their skating and shooting, play some games on the ice and

participate in scrimmages.

“I think any time you can get a child out participating in a sport is a great thing. Life skills are taught on and off the ice. It’s a great environment for girls to be in.”

They have to bring full hockey equipment for safety reasons, but if you contact the Hericanes executive they can provide

some to borrow for the day.

All girls are welcome, from as young as six years old.

“It’s interesting, for most people they think it’s just the young girls that need to come out, and we’re happy for any girl of any age to come out and try. We had girls last year starting their hockey careers at the bantam age, so that’s 13-year-

old girls starting hockey for the first time, which is fantastic.”

This past season they had just under 100 players, which she says is good, considering girls can also play for the co-ed Twin Centre Stars or travel to larger centres, like Wilmot and Woolwich.

Three of her four kids play hockey for the Twin

Centre Stars or Hericanes, and her youngest will likely be playing next season.

“So we’ve got kids all over the age brackets in this house. And I always say I’d rather they be out skating and having fun than sitting at home and maybe on a device or watching TV or Netflix.”

“I think we just go out and have fun. It is not like we went out there to win,” said Gidge.

“There is just that chemistry in how we all get along,” added Gilbert.

GALEA: Think early-season fishing is easy? Try some waders on for size, and scent, before judging FROM | 11

way that a dog that rolled in a dead animal ripens in the hot sun. In the first season, a good set of waders takes on an aroma of sour sweat, foot odor, arm pit stench and old farts. But, in the second season, it often gets bad.

And those are the breathable ones.

This is something you don’t notice when you are wearing them in the fresh

spring air while standing chest deep in a creek. But it is something you definitely pick up upon when those waders are stewing in the rear seat on the drive to the river and back.

Typically, you wonder if a road-killed skunk that a coyote used as a scent marking post got caught up in the undercarriage of your vehicle. Or whether you are following a manure truck whose product is past expi-

ration date. Then it dawns on you that both of these things would smell good in comparison to the odour that is wafting up from the back seat.

Yes, a well-used pair of waders smells so bad that hockey bags get envious.

Personally, I believe this is why you never hear the spouse of a fly angler complain when the angler suggests building a garage or larger shed. But it does

explain why they insist that it be built downwind.

Despite this, we anglers attach a certain amount of loyalty to our waders – especially if we were wearing those waders when we caught our largest trout of the season – or even scooped it up with a net when all the fish in the immediate vicinity started floating belly up.

Any angler who has had this experience will attest

to that.

We will continue wearing these waders throughout the fishing season, even though we know that at one point we will get tired of explaining to everyone why our eyes are constantly watering. Worse still, there will come a point when the sourness of the waders actually attaches itself to the clothes that you wore inside of them. Often this causes your spouse and others to

bring up the delicate subject of adult diapers and burning perfectly good clothes.

The difference between a rookie fly angler and an old hand is simple though.

A rookie will get mildly insulted and even defensive about their waders. The old hand will simply suggest that a new pair is needed.

And he or she will get approval too. After all, how many garages and sheds can a person have?

Dr. Julie Fell-Ogram is the newest addition to the North Waterloo Veterinary Clinic in Elmira. She has joined the team full time and is bringing fresh ideas and energy to the established practice.

Dr. Julie Fell-Ogram is a new face at the Dunke Street animal hospital in Elmira. She joined the practice full time earlier this month, and is already

settling in nicely.

“The people are just really nice, as well. I can’t complain there. And with Dr. (Linda) Hirzer, she really cares about her patients. I have never seen anyone care so much about her clients and her patients and the team here. We all have that kind of mentality.

It was an easy transition for me. Those are things that are important to me as

well,” she said.

Fell lives in Elmira, and after working at a clinic in Kitchener, she says it is great to be back home and connecting with clients on a different level.

“It has just been phenomenal. It isn’t just about the closeness to where I live, but I really do love the idea of practicing in the community that I love. I really hope to contribute to

the community, not only through veterinary work, but with things like education,” she said. “It is great to have my patients close by as well. It is great to be able to connect with clients about things that are going on locally like the maple syrup festival, and other things that are going on.

It is just about having that relationship with clients and their pets.”

The rest of the staff at the hospital are delighted to have Fell on the team, having graduated from veterinary college in 2011, she has some fresh ideas.

“She is into the start of her veterinary career, and I am well into my vet career, so it is nice to have someone that has recently been through the program,

And many of them regularly turn to their cookbooks for help.

Unlike cooks of yore, modern cooks aren’t so tied to their kitchens. Today, about 35-40 per cent of the food dollar goes to food eaten outside the home.

But not so in the good old days. Then, most cooks (typically women) had few options other than to prepare almost everything themselves. Cooking was more than a leisurely pursuit, and cookbooks – especially those called domestic manuals – encompassed activities in, and sometimes beyond, the kitchen.

For example, The Housewife’s Library, published in Guelph in 1883, proudly purports to be “furnishing the very best help in all the necessities, intricacies, emergencies and vexations that puzzle a housekeeper in every department of her duties in the home.”

ROBERTS: Exhibit a fascinating look back at the evolution of recipes and how we prepare food FROM | 14

thoroughly modern food historian and adjunct professor Dr. Rebecca Beausaert, who teaches the food history course (HIST*3240) at the University of Guelph, home of one of the most extensive special culinary arts collections in North America.

“These books give you a glimpse into Canadian society back then,” she says. “They were well used, and they shed light on the holistic role of the newly minted housewife and how she had to take so much

into her own hands, not just the health and nutrition of her family.”

Beausaert’s enthusiasm for archival culinary material is shared by her class, and is soon to be experienced by the public.

Over the past semester, she and her 37 students have developed a fascinating historical cookbook exhibit at the university, to commemorate Canada’s 150 anniversary. It’s called “Tried, Tested, and True: A retrospective on Canadian Cookery, 1867-1917.”

emonially on Apr. 7, 1 p.m., at the Summerlee Science Complex and will include talks by distinguished cookbook writers, including University of Guelph food laureate Anita Stewart of Elora. The public is welcome, and some of the recipes from the cookbooks – all of which are part of the university’s culinary arts collection – will be available for taste testing. The exhibit can be viewed until Dec. 6 in cases on the first floor of the McLaughlin Library.

The culinary arts collection is one of seven special

collections permanently archived at the university.

The culinary arts collection comprises a whopping 20,000-plus cookbooks, making it one of the largest such collections in North America.

The commemorative exhibit will focus on eight themes, beginning with housekeeping in the immediate post-Confederation era, and then conclude with Canada in the midst of the First World War. Recipes in wartime cookbooks reflected the need for thriftiness; often their purpose was to

help guide cooks as they worked to reduce consumption and increase production domestically, so more food would be available for the war effort abroad.

Other themes including cooking in Guelph and the surrounding area, advertising cookbooks, community cookbooks, and nutrition and health explore other aspects of Canadian society, culture, and economics. The cookbooks and domestic manuals chosen to illustrate these themes were drawn from the donated collections of some

of Canada’s most renowned cookbook authors, including food laureate Stewart, Una Abrahamson, Edna Staebler, Jean Pare and Elizabeth Baird.

Says Beausaert: “Many of these sources, such as the vast culinary collection, can help us better understand and learn about modern day food concerns, issues, and trends. This exhibit is an opportunity for the public to not only see parts of this collection, but also learn about how Canadians prepared, purchased, and conserved food.”

knows some of the newer treatments, and protocols and bring that here,” said Dr. Hirzer. “We do everything we can to stay up to date, but she brings that youthful approach to veterinary medicine. She has lots of energy, she is eager to learn new things, and the local presence, we really like.

“It is great to have someone local here. You can tell that she loves working within her community, so that is a huge positive. She has that enthusiasm.”

The North Waterloo Veterinary Hospital specializes in treating cats and dogs, and has recently upgraded their cat care facilities.

“The clinic has recently been certified cat-friendly, so we are focusing a little bit more on our feline patients and trying to adapt the clinic to be more welcoming to our feline patients. We see dogs and cats and that is our specialty,” said Fell. “We do wellness exams, vaccination programs. We do surgeries, dental procedures, x-rays, blood work and all that.”

The animal hospital has been updated in recent months, with new technology and more. Fell says the addition of digital x-rays and blood testing machines to the clinic add to the quality of care.

“We’re in the digital world now, so x-rays are digital.

We can easily send them to a radiologist, they read them and get back to us in some cases, within an hour.

It is just phenomenal that we can offer that to people.

A lot of the times, the waiting can just delay a diagnosis, delay a treatment.”

Fell said she loves all of her patients, but there are some that stand out for her.

“I have certainly gotten to meet some new puppies and I think those kind of make a difference with me.

Right off the bat, a kitten that we just spayed last week – I got to be there for her first shots, or round of vaccinations, and then we did her spay surgery and now I am going to get to see her grow throughout the years. And same with the puppies. I get to be there from the beginning,” she said.

EDSS students taking The Chasm public Having won three awards at Sears Ontario Drama Festival, Elmira production to be mounted at Registry Theatre WHITNEY NEILSON AFTER A SUCCESSFUL RUN at the district Sears Ontario Drama Festival, Elmira students will be taking their production to the big stage at The Registry Theatre in Kitchener.

Elmira District Secondary School drama teacher DJ Carroll explains their performance of The Chasm earlier this month at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School was so wellreceived that they’ll be putting it on for the public later this spring.

The Chasm was written

by Alan Haehnel, who is a playwright, as well as a high school teacher, actor and director in New Hampshire.

“Originally it was a Viking-era story and it was based on a tribe from a village that was wiped out by an evil king with his army and the story’s about the survivors of that village,” Carroll explained.

As they’re fleeing this evil king, they arrive at a chasm and they realize only the young and fit are going to be able to make it across. This means they’re going to have to leave the old and sick behind. So they’re left with this choice of do they leave the old and sick behind, all stay together and die, or all try to go across the chasm.

“It’s a very powerful story that’s reflecting a lot of the stuff that’s going on in the world today. And what we did is we actually modernized it, made it very relevant to what we’re seeing happening in Europe

They started working on the play in December. The cast and crew is made of 28 students. They’ll also perform the show for the school during Arts Week, which runs Apr. 18-20.

While they weren’t selected to move on to the next round of the drama festival, he says the judges were impressed and the school came away with three awards.

Erin Shoemaker won an acting award. The cast and crew won an award of excellence for their ensemble

work, as well as the spirit of the festival award.

“And because the story is so powerful and people have been talking about it, we are working on being able to mount it at The Registry Theatre in Kitchener. Right now we’re just negotiating a date, which will either be at the end of April or in May sometime.

And that means the kids are going to be performing it there and putting it on for the public, but also we’re inviting a bunch of delegates out to see it as well,” Carroll said.

Registry Theatre’s general manager, says he’s presented high school drama groups at The Registry in the past, such as Resurrection Catholic Secondary School and Eastwood Collegiate Institute, and is still interested in continuing that.

“Obviously there is a lot of great energy around high school productions. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more enthusiastic and appreciative crowd and that really is the fuel that runs our engines here at The Registry,” Varteniuk said.

It also happens to co-

incide nicely with their mission to encourage and support the development of the arts in Waterloo Region.

“I have a lot of friends that went through the Elmira system. I know they have a fantastic drama program. I’ve heard great things about Gord Davis, who was a drama teacher there for years, and I know DJ Carroll is really continuing that tradition,” Varteniuk said.

The spirit of the festival award that EDSS won is based on a few factors.

First, they look to see

which schools have students coming out every night to see the other schools’ plays. Carroll says the Elmira students spent a lot of evenings at the festival from Feb. 27 to Mar. 4.

Second, they notice which students are the most helpful during the festival.

“Our guys were always helping out, involved, lending a hand wherever it was needed. And then they look at the positive attitude that the cast and crew have during the show, but also during the workshop day. So we kind of blew everybody away,” Carroll said.

It’s with sadness and relief that we share news of Bob’s passing at the age of 71. He lost his fight with cancer but triumphed in the end. After months of suffering, he died peacefully at home in Elmira. We held his hands and sang him home. He was surrounded by love and was ready to go, with no regrets.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, Rev. I.D. and Ada Raymer. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Marilyn, and his children: Kari and Russell (Bishop), Jeffrey and Christine, and Jamie and Lynda. He will be lovingly remembered by his eight grandchildren: Rachel, Isobel, Evangelina, Emma, Ridge, Oakley, Kesler, and Henry. He is also survived by his siblings: Don, Bonnie (Sawler), David, and John.

Bob lived a life of adventure and service. Although born in Truro, Nova Scotia, he headed out into the world at a young age. Teaching was, for him, a calling. He spent 41 years investing in young people - in Canada’s North, Waterloo Region, Kenya, Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong. With his calm demeanor and love for mathematics, he impacted students all around the world. But he and Marilyn considered Elmira home and raised their kids there. After his second retirement, he worked at Floradale Feed Mill where he found tremendous satisfaction in his role as health and safety officer.

Bob loved to work. He never stopped working, thinking, learning or helping others. He loved fishing with his buddies, playing cards with his friends, traveling with his sweetie, joking with his grandchildren and dreaming with his kids. Bob played a mean accordion, navigated the stock market brilliantly, took up beekeeping and was still playing tennis, and winning, at 71.

Bob’s faith was, above all, the driving force in his life. He loved and served God, and lived an abundant life as a result.

Bob was loved and respected by so many people. He chose to die as he lived – with grace and humour and integrity, and with the absolute certainty that all was in God’s hands.

Bob received wonderful care during his illness. The professionals at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre were as kind as they were brilliant. The doctors and nurses of the local palliative care team made it possible for him to live in comfort and die in peace, at home where he belonged. And at every step of the way, his wife Marilyn was his very own compassionate caregiver – qualified, competent and so very steadfast in her care of him right until the end.

Visitation will take place at Gale Presbyterian Church, 10 Barnswallow Dr., Elmira, on Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 6-9 p.m. and Sunday, March 19, 2017 at 2 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Princess Margaret Cancer Centre or MCC.

It is with sadness and loss that we announce the passing of our mother Mabel on Thursday, March 9, 2017.

She passed away peacefully, at home in Elmira, surrounded by her loving family. Mabel was the beloved wife of the late John Chalmers (October 2001).

Loving mother of Julie and Lloyd Eby, Irene and Tom Murray, the late Bill (2004) and Betty Chalmers, June and Wayne Martin, Florence and Eddie Holterman, and Ken Chalmers and Dianne Hilker, all from the Elmira area.

Loved and fondly remembered by 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Florence Chamberlain, Evelyn Jonas and Hazel Cameron, and many nieces and nephews. Dear daughter of the late Joseph and Florence Chamberlain. Also predeceased by her granddaughter Annette Eby, and 12 brothers and sisters. The family received relatives and friends on Sunday, March 12, 2017 from 1-4 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira.

A funeral service, officiated by Pastor Dave Tiessen, was held on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment took place at West Montrose United Cemetery.

Special thanks to all the palliative care team that supported and cared for mom over the past months. In Mabel’s memory, donations to the Grand River Hospital Foundation (Regional Cancer Centre) would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

Jean’s wonderful journey ended peacefully in her 89th year, on Monday, March 13, 2017 at Sunnyside Home in Kitchener. She is now reunited with her endless love; Bill (1963). Her large family already misses her - William (Julia), Doug, Jane Gunn (Bob), Robert (Bill Schulz), and Steve (Lori).

Jean was a devoted Grandma to Jennifer (Curtis McFadden), Amanda (Ryan Castle), Will Sebben (Colbey), Ben Gunn (Steph), Catrina (Mike Clark), Adrienne (Dave Elliott), Steph, Ted, Jill, and Leah Sebben, and was adored by her ten great-grandchildren: Addison, Kenzie, Oden, Bryce, Presley, Gavin, Myla, Sutter, Westin, and Quinn.

Jean will be lovingly remembered by Pat and Jean Sebben and her numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by parents, William and Pearl Milner, Mabel and Bill Sebben, and in-laws George and Betty Sebben, and Marg and Earl Stoskopf.

Jean independently raised her five children on the 13th line of Wellesley, later moving to Linwood where she became Linwood Chiefs #1 fan. She could often be seen at various ballparks, arenas and bonspiels, socializing and enjoying the company of family and friends.

Jean travelled countless miles with the ‘Golden Girls’ and will be recalled for her entertainment and true love of life.

Her kind heart and fiery spirit will be remembered and missed by all.

A pilgrimage worth making more than once Gale Presbyterian’s Rev. Scott Sinclair getting set to head to Spain to repeat the Camino de Santiago It’s been nine years since Rev. Scott Sinclair completed the Camino de Santiago, but he’s now ready to complete the trek across Spain again, as a way to take a break from ministry and come back a better minister. Here, he shows the book he had made with stories and photos from his first pilgrimage.

WHITNEY NEILSON DESPITE BREAKING HIS LEG the last time he embarked on a pilgrimage, Rev. Scott Sinclair is preparing to walk the Camino de Santiago this spring as a way to reinvigorate himself and his preaching.

As minister of Elmira’s Gale Presbyterian Church, Sinclair decided about a year and a half ago he was ready to do the pilgrimage again. He completed the lengthy trek (780 kilometres) in Spain nine years ago while at the helm of a different church.

This year he’s doing the pilgrimage – at least the start – with two friends from Canada.

“You really have to approach it in your own way and if my two buddies want to do something different or spend time in one particular centre longer than I want to, they have to do that their way and they have to respect that I’m going to do the same.”

He says when he returns, the congregation will benefit from a revitalized pastor.

Coconut oil a good choice in baking RECIPE NOTES RECENTLY I HAVE BEEN experimenting with coconut oil in cooking and baking. It has a subtle coconut flavour and is not greasy.

You can use it in any recipe that calls for butter or oil and the good news is that it’s healthy!

If I believed everything I read online coconut oil would make me thin, give me beautiful hair and skin, and keep me from getting dementia. No getting heart disease or diabetes. No more brain fog. I should see something happening soon because I use coconut oil to fry my eggs for breakfast and I use it for baking ... surely that will help me lose weight? And I am still waiting for my brain fog to clear.

Today I experimented with this Drop Sugar Cookie recipe, using coconut oil instead of the vegetable oil listed in the recipe. They were so quick to make because they are not rolled like traditional sugar cookies and the dough does not require chilling. And they are delicious! Big data tracks the emotions of people using social media such as Twitter WEIRD NOTES

Q. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one for all you Twitterers out there: On what day of the week and at what time of day are your words likely to be positive? When might they be more negative?

A. The answer rests with

â&#x20AC;&#x153;big dataâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;small science,â&#x20AC;? that can be done with pen and paper rather than fancy equipment and a big budget, say David G. Myers and C. Nathan Dewall in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Exploring Psychology.â&#x20AC;?

Employing new technologies, such as smart-phone apps, body-worn sensors and social media, researchers use â&#x20AC;&#x153;big dataâ&#x20AC;? natural-

istic observation to freely track peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s location, activities and opinions. Imagine for a moment the data pouring in from the billions of people on Facebook, Twitter, and Google. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One research team studied the ups and downs of human moods by counting positive and negative words in 504 million Twitter messages from 84 countries.â&#x20AC;? Perhaps not surprisingly, they found that people seem happier on weekends, shortly after arising and in the evening, with positive posts highest late Saturday night. Positive posts were lowest on Tuesday afternoons.

Interestingly, â&#x20AC;&#x153;another study found that the proportion of negative emotions (especially anger-related words) in 148 million

tweets from 1347 U.S. counties predicted the countiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; heart disease rates, and did so even better than other predictors such as smoking and obesity.â&#x20AC;?

Q. The research video shows a shark stalking and then attacking an apparently defenseless hagfish. The shark bites the middle of the eel-like creatureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body, completely flattening it, but immediately relents, spitting out its victim and scurrying away.

The hagfish swims away seemingly unfazed and unharmed. How can this be?

PILGRIMAGE: Journey along the route provides

Rev. Kees Vandermay lives in the area and upon retirement he joined the Gale congregation. He’ll take over for Sinclair while he’s away.

“The idea of taking this time off is actually written into our agreement from our national offices that ministers are expected to every five years take this sabbatical time of two or three months and just take a break from ministry and do something other than being in the pulpit and preaching.”

He’s been walking two or three times a day around town to prepare for all the walking. He leaves in April and will finish the trip in June. It takes about six weeks to walk the route.

The last time he did the pilgrimage he was laid up in a small town about the size of Elmira in western Spain for four days.

He developed a pain in his leg and it was diagnosed as tendonitis. Once he returned to Canada he found out he actually had a clean break in his leg.

Because it hadn’t healed properly, he spent time in a wheelchair.

“An important mes-

sage that I got out of that and what I often use as a message to my congregation and to my religious teachings is that suffering happens. Life brings you things that cause suffering, you lose somebody, you get sick, you don’t get the job you want, suffering happens. And that’s kind of something the world gives us that God kind of knows that’s what happens, but God doesn’t create the misery end of it.”

When he returns to Spain this time around, he plans to go back and see the dormitory manager who looked after him while I was suffering, letting him stay longer than pilgrims are supposed to, fetching food for him, and eventually getting him to the hospital.

He also met a man named Domingo in Burgos with a little dog who gave him a tour of the town when Sinclair was out late at night. When he goes through Burgos again he’s going to try to find him too.

Despite the broken leg suffered last time, he says the pilgrimage is a valuable experience and you don’t have to be in top physical shape to do it. Some people

even do it in sections, two weeks one year, and then pick up the next year when they can take vacation time again.

“If we want to walk 10 kilometres in a day and stop, we have the opportunity to do that. If there’s a day we feel like doing 30 kilometres, we’ll do that.

That’s kind of the attitude I want to take to this sort of thing, is no real deadlines, no real urgency, just take it as it comes.”

He notes the concept of walking, pilgrimage, and doing the same thing day after day solidified in him a lot of metaphors about life. During the pilgrimage he began to realize at any particular point you can look way ahead at where you’re supposed to be, and you say to yourself, how can I possibly do that? You soon realize the way you can possibly do that is by taking a step.

“It’s not rocket science.

But it was a really powerful way to have that drive home for me, that life comes to you just a step at a time, and just take it bit by bit and eventually you get to that place at the end where you’re going to spend the night.”

slightly and for a crunchy cookie bake them until they are brown around the edges.

Drop Sugar Cookies 3/4 cup butter, softened 3/4 cup coconut oil 2 cups white sugar 2 large eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 4 cups all purpose flour, sifted

1-1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt

Cream butter and coconut oil until light, about 3 minutes.

Add sugar and eggs and mix again.

Add vanilla.

Add flour, baking soda and salt, mix until all is combined.

Use a cookie scoop or roll dough into balls, place on greased baking sheets about 1-1/2” apart.

Press cookies down slightly with your hand.

Sprinkle with coarse sugar if you like.

Bake at 350º F for 15-17 minutes or until they are starting to brown on the bottom.

Cool, then store in an airtight container.

take a proactive approach to enforcing bylaws,” she said. “Infractions are complaint-driven. Now we are supposed to trust council to hold (Chervin) accountable?” she said, referencing the traffic, noise, smell and other bylaw infractions. “I am baffled.”

For Mayor Joe Nowak, the issue was distrust, of both the township and local industry, on the part of Hawkesville residents.

“I am not going to support the recommendation as it stands. I am concerned about the lack of trust and the lack of compliance,” he said. “It could give some time for the residents and the applicant to find some common ground with the problems they are having.”

Since the Feb. 14 meeting, councillors took the time to visit homes in Hawkesville and get the lay of the land, and for Coun. Shelley Wagner, the tour just confirmed her previous misgivings.

“My stance hasn’t changed, but having gone to the Franks’ backyard, smelling what they smell and looking at what they look at, I didn’t like it before, but I liked it even less after going out there,” she said.

Hawkesville resident Dan Bender had some questions for councillors before they voted against adding employment lands to the settlement area.

It was a different story when dealing with new employment lands proposed for Crosshill, however.

After deciding to split one motion into two in order to deal with Hawkesville and Crosshill separately, councillors voted in favour, giving businesses such as Gerber Meats the opportunity to update and expand their operations.

“I have talked to people who don’t mind (more employment lands in Crosshill) and sometimes you have to make a decision about what is in the best interest of the whole versus the few,” said Coun.

Herb Neher. “Gerber Meats have been here for 30-some years, the shop is really outdated, and what they want to do is something similar to Stemmler’s in Heidelberg there. Gerber Meats owns that property. They are a taxpayer in the township as well. I have done a lot of soul-searching on this one in Crosshill. This is totally different than in Hawkesville.”

Having made a decision about Hawkesville land, the township is turning its attention to bylaw violations in the village. For example, there are trailers parked on what is currently zoned as agricultural land, said chief administrative officer Rik Lowagie, assuring councillors the process of bringing Chervin into compliance is already underway.
