The usually sparse Wellesley council chambers were packed with friends and family of Austin Padaric on Tuesday night, as councillors heard a proposal to name the township’s new multi-use sports pad after the late teen.

Padaric, a 17-year-old Heidelberg resident and EDSS student, died of an accidental drug overdose in April, and friend Trevor Olender told council that the gesture would raise discussion of the dangers of drug abuse.

Olender launched the petition shortly after his classmate’s death, accumulating 2,000 names, many of them on the petition website www.change.org.

Fighting. Outlaw behaviour. Family fun. As the last 13 years have demonstrated, the three mix just fine at the Robin in the Hood Medieval Festival, which returns to Elmira next weekend.

Gibson Park will be transformed into Sherwood Forest in order to welcome thousands of visitors for the annual ode to Hood, his Merry Men and the rest of the gang from Nottingham.

Some 1,100 Grade 4 students from the region are expected to visit the festival on June 7 to learn about medieval life, a visual demonstration not available back in their classrooms.

It’s a hands-on experience to augment their studies of the era, with the kids making their way through

various stations, including knight school, archery, music and birds of prey.

Many teachers have chosen to attend the festival over the traditional (and costly) trip to Medieval Times in Toronto, which has, in the past, concluded students’ medieval units, said festival spokesperson Shayna Meadows.

Following the afternoon’s educational portion, the festival will be offering up a free evening of entertainment for the public, something of a sneak preview of the full festival experience the following day. A new addition to the schedule, the community night will run from 6 to 9 p.m. While there’s no charge, donations will be accepted.

The main event follows on Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Throughout the day,

those in attendance are treated to magic shows, knights in battle, jesters, musicians, jugglers, comedy, fortune-telling and, naturally, archery demonstrations. There are also numerous merchants on hand selling jewelry, leather goods, armour, toys and other period novelties.

The inspiration of artistic director DJ Carroll, head of the drama department at Elmira District Secondary School, the festival captures the romantic spirit of the medieval times – the royalty, the knights, the battles – with a story featuring the beloved characters of Sherwood Forest.

The Robin Hood saga, the popularity of which prompted the festival in the first place, helps to feed its growth.

A legend that has lived in tale for more than 800

years – scholars today still argue over whether the story is fact or fiction and, if true, who was the actual man behind the name – the Robin Hood story is a genuine crowd pleaser. The multitude of books, movies and television programs dedicated to the leader of the merry men of Sherwood attests to the enduring appeal of Robin Hood.

What started out as a small group of EDSS students has expanded to more than 150 actors, plus a cadre of volunteers and vendors. Perhaps a third of those involved are now from the wider community, Meadows estimated. “It’s mainly still students, but there’s a big group of community people – it’s growing.�

elena maystruk Hoping to offset a truncated year for fundraising at Elmira District Secondary School, two students are heading the fourth annual Café for Change initiative today (Saturday). A yearly fundraiser is focusing this year’s efforts on funding a drinking well in Haiti.

“Because of the teacher strike we weren’t allowed to do any events in between that, so we kind of decided we wanted to do a big event to end it off and make up for what we haven’t done,” said Alicia Waring.

Her partner in crime, Tessa Charnuski, previously expressed interest in similar projects and wanted to focus the funding efforts towards a water-related project.

“I really wanted to build a well, so that was a really good cause to give our money towards,” she added.

The idea to fundraise for this specific project also came from Waring’s previous work in Haiti.

The youth had gone on a missionary trip to the country and made a few connections she hopes to keep.

“In March of 2012, I went on a mission to Haiti so I kind of have connections there. It’s a good opportunity to help somewhere.”

This is the pair’s first year heading Be the Change at EDSS – a campaign endorsed by Craig Keilburger, founder of the Free the Children Foundation in Toronto.

Rachel Wallace-Oberle started out like many writers do, at a small community paper, before she worked her way to the big bylines in magazines like Canadian Living, Readers Digest and even Chicken Soup for the Soul. The latest of the feel-good books, ‘Inspiration for Writers,’ brings together 101 writers to share their experiences, good and bad, and also features some words of wisdom from a writer in Elmira.

“I think I wanted to share with the readers my love of writing and how it’s not just a job, it’s a passion. That when you have it, you can’t shake it and that it can take you to incredible places physically and career-wise and spiritually. I think the particular story I chose was one of my most meaningful experiences as a writer. I don’t know if I can ever duplicate that but it is one that really inspired me,” said WallaceOberle.

The story she shares in the book takes place in Haiti. While on assignment covering an organization’s globally recognized work, she spoke to Aricia Fleurimond, who would be the main subject of Wallace-Oberle’s piece for Homemakers Magazine on agricultural co-ops in the country.

During a whirlwind, tightdeadline assignment, it was the story of this woman that stuck with the writer. In sharing the story Wallace-Oberle hopes, like many other writers in Chicken Soups’s latest edition, to inspire and motivate.

She says gaining credibility was one of her biggest challenges as a budding writer.

“Writing is one of the hardest jobs. It’s a very difficult career path to choose and so you are constantly trying to prove yourself and get the next story and make contacts. For me starting out as a writer I was always looking for credibility and trying to establish myself as a writer and that takes a while.”

“The writers scene has changed dramatically and there’s so many transferable skills, there are so many opportunities, and if you just have your mind set on one path you’ll be disappointed.

When I said there weren’t that many writers jobs out there, I think that’s true, but there are a lot of different directions a writer can take."

Wallace-Oberle has freelanced for well-known magazines, and now works as a senior writer with a software company in Waterloo.

“If you would have told me that five years ago when I really wanted to be an editor of a magazine

I would have said ‘no, no way’,” she said.

In an interview with Aricia Fleurimond, the woman that much affected Wallace-Oberle at the time, she asked Fleurimond what she would say to other Haitian women. Perhaps it’s fitting to pose a similar question to the writer herself: what would she say to writers plying their craft?

“I think I’d probably say exactly what Aricia said to me: bon courage. Be of good courage, be strong. In essence, never give up, never ever give up. Your path may take a different turn than you envisioned but be open to that because you never know what opportunity lies ahead.”

Since its reformation in 2010, the Wellesley and District Optimist Club’s mandate has been to pursue projects benefiting youth in the community. The culmination of their most recent effort came on May 23 at a presentation at the Wellesley Community Centre, where interim president Wayne Kneisel made a donation towards the township’s multi-use sports pad.

The play area will be located at the Wellesley Community Centre grounds. Coun. Jim Olender, who accepted the $5,000 cheque on behalf of the township, told the club it would hopefully be completed be the end of June.

“Seven years ago when I got elected, as I did my canvassing, people were saying, ‘We’ve got nothing for the kids to do,’” said Olender. Congratulating the club for fulfilling its youth mandate, Olender added, “The vulnerable years are from 12 to 19. The kids have nothing to do. We need to work on giving these kids something to do in the community.”

Olender also called on the community to explore projects to benefit teenagers who are not interested in sports.

“We really need to look at that, and create something they can look forward to and occupy their time with. They’re not lucky like the kids in town who can hop on a bus and go to a show, or go to a club. Here, they’re stuck unless the parents are driving them all over the place.”

Concluding his remarks, Olender expressed gratitude for the Optimists’ role in the township. “Small communities like this really hinge on volunteers, because they’re the ones that drive whatever happens.”

“If kids want to know why the park is named ‘the AMP,’ the story will be brought about, and kids will be aware of how fragile life really is,” explained Olender.

“I want to emphasize that it’s not about naming the park after my son,” added mother Christine Padaric. “The park would be a foundation I would continue to grow upon …

We have to accept the reality that drugs are a problem in our community.

“Whatever way we’re communicating with our kids now is not hitting home. We have to find a different way … Austin’s friends at school, they’ve embraced this as an opportunity to continue to communicate that message that there are dangers involved with drugs.”

While Mayor Ross Kelterborn was concerned that the petition did not separate Wellesley Township residents from nonlocal signees, council eventually voted to accept the results.

Wagner also suggested that a memory wall might be incorporated, on which community members who

have lost a child under age 19 could donate a plaque in their name.

“I sure like the idea of trying to put a positive spin on a tragedy to help others,” added Kelterborn.

As Padaric was an avid skateboarder, councillors agreed that the ‘AMP’ name would be best suited for just the skateboard section of the sports pad.

Council voted unanimously to direct staff to prepare a policy in relations to the naming of specific facilities in the township, to be brought back to a future committee meeting.

Voisin is looking at July 9 as the date when the issue could return to council.

Added Wagner to the audience, “It does take a little time to develop a policy. It may not happen really fast, but we’re not going to just let it go under the rug.”

The board is also conducting a review of its schools in Waterloo, Wellesley and Wilmot. Though part of the process, St. Clement school is not facing a closure. The St. Agatha school is on the chopping block, however.

Citing declining enrolment, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board this week voted to close St. Boniface elementary school in Maryhill. It will be replaced with a 250-student elementary school to be built in Breslau.

Both Woolwich communities fall within the same boundaries. Given new development and future growth in Breslau, that location was seen as a

“They are like biological computers,” confirmed local therapist Jan Yordy, whose new picture book ‘Be the Boss of Your Thoughts,’ attempts to unlock the mysteries of the cranium to a pint-sized audience. “To think of the brain as being this computer that sends signals of information back and forth might not be a new concept to people … but the idea that they can get disconnected from the thinking part of the brain, that’s the key.”

Yordy’s book is an attempt to make the triune brain theory understandable for a wide audience.

The theory was first articulated in the 1960s, when neuroscientist Paul MacLean described three evolutionary parts of the brain (“a brain within a brain within a brain,” says Yordy): the paleomammalian complex, the neomammalian complex, and the reptilian complex. Or, in layman’s terms, the thinking, emotional, and animal brains.

According to the theory, problems arise when these three parts become discon-

nected.

“In our emotional brain, the amygdale is like the alarm system – it’s always looking for danger,” said Yordy. “When it perceives that there’s something dangerous, it will immediately send a signal down to the primitive brain, so the primitive brain is going to react – fight, flight, or freeze.”

Harper's lack of ethics is now clear for all to see CALLING STEPHEN HARPER AND his party ethically challenged would be an understatement. Critics have been pointing out examples of unethical behaviour for years. Conservative supporters have been sweeping them under a rug for just as long. Now, there’s so much blood in the water not even the most partisan Tories can ignore the reality of the situation.

It’s been a bad couple of weeks for Harper. There’s Mike Duffy and Nigel Wright, a pair of scandals all by themselves. And Pamela Wallin, another of Harper’s appointments to the Senate, a list that also includes Patrick Brazeau. On the robocall front, a court decision points the finger at some questionable activities, while not going all the way due to the limited scope of the case.

Then there’s Arthur Porter, Harper’s appointee as the chairman of the Security Intelligence Review Committee, who was arrested in Panama and is wanted in this country as part of a fraud and corruption investigation. And there’s this week’s revelation at least a third of the members appointed to a new Social Security Tribunal are those who contributed to the Conservative party, including failed candidates and riding association members. Many of the fulltime jobs pay $91,800 to $107,900, while some pay between $105,900 and $124,500. Vice-chairs earn up to $164,600, while the chair makes up to $231,500.

Speaking of patronage, there’s the pending ambassadorship for the head of Harper’s security detail, Bruno Saccomani.

Those are only some of the most recent scandals. There’s a long list going back pretty much to day-one of Harper’s tenure as prime minister. The in-and-out scandal – guilty as charged and fined for it – dates back to the beginning. A variation of the scheme, designed to circumvent Elections Canada rules and claim undeserved deductions, continued in subsequent elections.

There’s Bev Oda and the first-ever contempt of Parliament charge. And let’s not forget the long list of dubious characters and associates such as Bruce Carson, Sebastien Togneri and senators Doug Finley and Irving Gerstein.

Through all of this, Harper has attempted to neuter watchdog and oversight groups en route to forming the most secretive government in the country’s history, all the while espousing openness and accountability. One has only to look at the treatment of the Parliamentary Budget Officer, the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner, the Chief Electoral Officer and others to see the government’s true colours.

Increasingly, we see that the culture created by Harper poses ethical challenges. It’s a win-at-any-cost mentality that’s more about gamesmanship than it is good governance. Too many machinations and too much strategy, and not enough doing what’s right for the country.

The increasing power of staff and advisors in the PMO, for instance, sees overeager partisans act as though the ends justify the means.

Look no further than the G20 summit debacle, where $1.3 billion was wasted and the civil rights of Canadians were violated for a Harper photo op.

If we’re going to reverse the ethical slide, we’ll need change, starting with voters making ethics an issue. We have to push for real controls – politicians write the rules, going very easy on themselves so far – that will hold them accountable.

Too busy funneling ever-increasing taxes into pet projects and their own pockets, local government officials don't put much stock in what the public actually wants.

Media reports aside, world is a more peaceful place WORLD AFFAIRS Imagine for a moment that all the wars of the world have come to a peaceful conclusion. Most violent crime against people and property has also been eradicated. The worst outbreak of violence in the world in the past 24 hours has been a fight in a bar in Irkutsk, Russia.

What item do you think will lead the international news for the next 12 hours, or however long it takes until something fresher comes along? The bar fight in Irkutsk, of course. “If it bleeds, it leads,” says the axiom, and the world’s media follow it slavishly, so they will always give you the impression that the world is drowning in violence. It is not – but people think it is.

Stop people at random and ask them how many wars they think are going on in the world right now.

Most people would guess around a dozen, although they wouldn’t be able to name them. The right

answer is two, and one of them, Afghanistan, is probably approaching its end.

There are close to 200 independent countries in the world, and only one in a hundred is currently at war. They are both primarily civil wars, although there is some foreign involvement in each case.

The Syrian civil war is extremely destructive of lives and property, the war in Afghanistan less so, and in both cases the fighting occasionally slops over their borders, but that’s it.

There are a number of other countries where there is a lower level of civil conflict: the Democratic Republic of Congo, for example, or Colombia (although the latter is now engaged in peace talks to end the 50-year conflict between the state and the FARC guerillas). But the Sri Lankan civil war is over, the Iraqi civil war is at least over for the moment, and the many little wars of West Africa are all over.

Then there is Somalia, the world’s only failed state, where 20 years of violent anarchy may finally be drawing to an end. But the actual scale of the fighting

has rarely risen to a level that would qualify what has been happening there as a full-scale war. Not, at least, what would have qualified as a full-scale war back in the days when that sort of thing was still common. Most of the time Somalia’s conflict has been more like gangland wars on steroids.

There is terrorism in various places, like Boko Haram’s bizarre campaign to impose Islamic law on Nigeria (where only half the population is Muslim), the Pakistani Taliban’s campaign of murder against their Shia fellow-citizens, and the Naxalites’ long and forlorn struggle to make a Communist revolution in India. All nasty, but none of them real wars.

And there is, finally, the famous “war” on terror, which these days amounts to little more than overzealous law enforcement at home and selective assassination by drones abroad.

Like the “war” on drugs in Mexico, it is only a metaphor for an activity that is not really a war at all.

So that’s it: two real wars, and a clutter of lesser conflicts that really do not

merit the term. In a world of seven billion people, only a few hundred million have even the slightest experience of organized violence for political ends.

Why, then, do so many people think that the world is still overrun by war?

The media are partly to blame, but they are also manipulated by various governments that raise the spectre of war for their own ends. Wars that have not happened and are never likely to fill the imaginations of the public: a war in Korea, a U.S. and/or Israeli attack on Iran, Western or Israeli intervention in Syria, a war between China and South-East Asian countries over islands in the South China Sea, a U.S.-Chinese conflict in the Pacific, and on and on.

A lot of people, some in uniform and some not, make a living off these mostly phantom fears, and they contribute to the general impression that the world is still a place where war, however deplorable, is the normal state of affairs.

It is not. We live in an era where, for the first time DYER | 10

Governments will have to prioritize, learning to make do with less EDITOR'S NOTES Are you ready to pay one per cent more for everything you buy in order to help the GTA with its self-made gridlock problem? How about another five cents a litre for gasoline?

If you are, you’ll be hardpressed to form a duo.

Theoretically, the assortment of tax grabs trotted out by Metrolinx to generate $2 billion a year for transit infrastructure needs pegged at $50 billion won’t involve those outside of the GTA. A one-percentage point increase to the HST would have to be applied province-wide, though money collected outside the Toronto area wouldn’t be applied to transit there.

Still, your taxes will go up.

Likewise, a five cent per litre fuel tax inside the GTA would be difficult to contain geographically: where do you draw the boundary?

Other measures such as parking fees, development charges and high-occupan-

cy toll lanes would apply only in the GTA. No one is arguing that Toronto has a gridlock problem. It needs better transit, unlike Waterloo Region, where we’re already experiencing higher taxes for an unnecessary expenditure on an LRT scheme.

Transit? Yes. More taxes?

No. The provincial budget is $127 billion. If transit is the priority it’s made out to be, surely the government can find $2 billion a year by reducing spending elsewhere (leaving aside the billions squandered on the likes of eHealth, ORNGE and relocated gas plants). As critics have pointed out, the government spends $1.3 billion annually on grants and loans to businesses, which also receive another $2.3 billion in other support programs such as tax credits. The province can also learn to prioritize, cutting those programs at the bottom of the list to make room for transit projects.

burden to individuals, largely in the middle class, will have to stop.

And all of those considerations come at a time of failing economic health.

“Ontario faces more severe economic and fiscal challenges than most Ontarians realize. We can no longer assume a resumption of Ontario’s traditional strong economic growth and the continued prosperity on which the province has built its public services. Nor can we count on steady, dependable revenue growth to finance government programs,” is the report’s blunt assessment.

“Balancing the budget, however, will also require tough decisions that will entail reduced benefits for some. Given that many of these benefit programs are not sustainable in their current form, the government will need to decide how best to target benefits to those who need them most. The treatment may be difficult, but it is worth the effort.”

In other words, we’ll have to give up some things in order to keep others. It’s

called compromise, and it’s what governments will have to do now that simply raising taxes is no longer an option.

For the province, that means funding its transit plans with existing revenues. Closer to home, scrapping the LRT would save the provincial and federal governments some money, while reducing the ever-mounting burden on property taxes. More pressingly, as an editorial in the Record notes this week, local governments will have to tackle the issue of wages, which make up more than half of their budgets. Freezes, rollbacks and downsizing are the only way to ensure that services, especially needed infrastructure, can be delivered without raising taxes.

While people grumble about paying taxes and get especially annoyed with unnecessary increases, what we’re mostly concerned about it seeing value for our money. All too often that’s not the case, at every level of government. When, for instance, the bulk of the increase

in your property taxes is earmarked for wage increases, it’s hard to see the value. That’s especially so when many of us aren’t seeing increases in our paycheques.

Beyond being annoyed with government waste – see just about every bit of news coming out of Ottawa and Queen’s Park these days – what’s really at stake is the legitimacy of government itself. That may sound dramatic, but if the bureaucracies are seen as bloated and self-serving, it becomes easier to write off all of the good thing that governments do. There is already a strong contingent that would downsize and eventually neuter government, which is essentially our way of working together for common goals.

Every wasted tax dollar, every politician focused only on keeping his job, every entitled civil servant, every incident of corruption erodes the credibility of government.

Any hope of regaining even a modicum of public trust starts with each level of government getting its fiscal house in order.

lems, though its projects are likely to be massively over-budget, if past experience is any guide.

The same priority-setting rationale applies to the very long list of essential infrastructure projects everywhere in Ontario.

If the examples mentioned here so far aren’t enough, the Liberal government has only to look as far as the report it received last year from economist Don Drummond. The Commission on the Reform of Ontario’s Public Services spelled out in great detail the perils of the government’s profligacy and solutions for reducing spending while sparing citizens from massive tax grabs.

The Drummond report clearly indicated the need for tough decisions, the kind we’ll have to keep in mind while reviewing both spending and tax policy.

We’re going to need more, not less money, at least while deficits and debt are being tackled. Some programs will have to go. New spending plans may have to be scrapped. And, most importantly, tax giveaways and the shifting of the tax

When asked if they support a universal public drug plan to ensure that all Canadians are covered for necessary prescription drugs, more than three-quarters (78%) support this idea, and fewer than one in seven (14%) are opposed (8% are unsure). Results from the survey reveal that most Canadians paid less than $1,000 for prescription drugs in the past year, although a sizeable minority (21%) indicated that they paid $1,000 or more for prescriptions.

in history, no great power genuinely fears attack by any other, and where the number of actual wars can be counted on the fingers of one badly mutilated hand.

Almost 90 million people died in the world wars and other big wars (including the Russian, Chinese and Spanish civil wars) of the first half of the 20th century, out of a world population that was one-third of what it is now. In the second half of the century the

death toll dropped steeply to 25 million or so, most of whom died in colonial independence wars and civil wars.

And so far, in the 21st century, the total is less than one million people killed in war. What we have on our hands here is a miraculous and mostly unsung success story.

There will doubtless be more wars, but they may be small and infrequent.

We are obviously doing something right. We should figure out what it is, and do more of it.

Woolwich teen lands bronze for trampoline performance Nathan Shuh’s dedication to training pays dividends as he places third at national championships in Ottawa WILL SLOAN “When Nathan was 6 years old, he taught himself how to do a back walkover all by himself, because we have a trampoline in the back,” said Alanna Shuh of her brother Nathan. “He used to get in trouble in church because he used to do back walkovers all down the hallways, and it would drive the Sunday school teachers crazy.”

Fifteen-year-old Nathan Shuh first hit a trampoline at the age of 18 months, and has risen through the gymnastic ranks ever since.

On Saturday, he jumped into the national spotlight, winning bronze at the 2013 Canadian Gymnastics Championship in Ottawa.

This marked the Woolwich teen’s first year at the national level, with the hope of more to come.

“You need to work really hard at your sport, because it’s a privilege, not a right,” said the EDSS student, who began training ever day for the championship in September, with three visits to the gym each week.

Nathan’s path to the championships really began in 2009 when he joined the Woolwich Gymnastics Club’s competitive program for three years (he is now a coach-in-training for the organization). Last summer, he made a switch to competitive trampoline, working with coach Chris Martin at

Airborne Trampoline KW to devise a fluid strategy.

“There are a lot of skills you can show off, but depending on the day and how you’re feeling, you need to combine the skills you can execute really well in order to make the top three,” explained Nathan’s mother, Corinne Shuh.

“The first bit you do is, you warm up,” said Nathan, describing his training regiment. “That’s focusing on flexibility and endurance.

Then you get on the trampoline and you work on your skills and routines for the most part. At the end, you do conditioning – that’s maintaining your strength and flexibility.”

After succeeding at the provincial championships, he went to the nationals, with judges analyzing performances based on difficulty, execution, and flight time (time in the air). When points were tallied up, Team Ontario won silver, and Nathan took home bronze.

“I’m really excited about it,” said Corinne Shuh of the championship. “He’s committed to working at it – when you watch him training, he’s the first guy on the trampoline and the last guy off.”

The hard work is what’s needed to be competitive, said Nathan.

“You need to have really good aerial awareness, good stamina,” he said. “Just work hard. Work really hard.”

Body checking to be removed from peewee hockey Local associations will make changes for the upcoming season in accord with last week’s decision by Hockey Canada ELENA MAYSTRUK A new ban on body checking at the peewee level of minor hockey will have local associations making changes this summer.

The rule change was approved last weekend at Hockey Canada’s general meeting in Charlottetown.

The nationwide ban applies to players in the 11- and 12-year-old age bracket beginning with the 2013-14 season.

latest change for minor hockey groups, says WMHA president injuries to players between the ages of 9 and 16.

From the 1980s until 2002 checking was introduced at age 12 in boys’ hockey.

In the 2002-2003 season, four of the 13 provincial/ territorial branches allowed checking as early as the atom level (9 to 10 yearolds), according to the Canadian Pediatric Society. In 2009 Hockey Canada introduced body checking at the peewee level nationwide, with the exception of Quebec, which delayed it until the Bantam age bracket.

Body checking at the minor level has always been subject to change, so for some leagues the nationwide ruling comes as no surprise. Hockey Nova Scotia and Hockey Alberta had already banned body checking from the peewee level earlier in May, citing similar player safety concerns.

“I don’t think it was a big surprise to anyone that they changed the age. There has been a lot of speculation that this was going to happen soon,” Waters said.

So far, WMHA has not heard much feedback from parents or kids, but an announcement of the rule change will be made on the group’s website as well as in summer newsletters.

Directions 1. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough and top with a drizzle of olive oil.

2. In a bowl, combine grapes, rosemary leaves, pine nuts and a drizzle of olive oil. Set aside.

3. Slide the pizza dough on the BBQ and cook on medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until slightly golden brown.

Some of the concerns brought forth by those who oppose the current decision stem from fear that kids may not be able to adjust to a contact-heavy game once they reach age 13 at the bantam level.

But Waters said this isn’t the first time rules have had to change.

“This same thing happened five years ago to the 1998 age group when body contact was allowed in minor atom and this group had to move to major atom with no contact. It is an adjustment. However, the players adapt,” he said.

Studies coming out of St. Michael Hospital in Toronto in 2012 argued for mandatory restrictions on body checking as an effective way to limit brain injuries.

They showed that injuries prevalent with both legal and illegal body checking, account for 15 per cent of all

Reaching a stage where you just can’t see what the real problem is OPEN COUNTRY The other day I was organizing a fly box when I realized that, over the last year or so, it and all the contents within had shrunk and got inexplicably blurry.

At the time I guessed exposure to water had caused the box and its contents to shrink and get fuzzy. This, I thought, might also handily explain why I am 5-foot-3.

Jenn, my partner, however, insisted that every-

thing was still the same size and level of fuzziness that it was last year, except for me – she said I put on a pound or two and perhaps had gotten a little fuzzier around the ears. Worse still, she said that I should probably get my eyes checked.

Later, when she insisted on this, I turned to her and said, “Me get my eyes checked? Are you crazy?”

To which, she replied, “I’m over here; you’re talking to the lamp.”

True, that was compelling evidence. But what really convinced me was the fact that it took me five minutes to get my tip-

pet through the eye of a size 16 hook. Five minutes is the limit of begging an angling buddy can take before he threads a tippet through the eye of a size 16 hook for you, by the way.

Suddenly, this was getting serious.

So, sometime this week, I’ll be setting up an appointment to get my eyes checked. And I imagine not long after that I’ll be wearing glasses.

As an outdoorsman, this presents both problems and opportunities.

The problem lies in the fact that I’ll soon have to be keeping track of one more piece of vital gear.

I’ll also have to ensure that they don’t fog up when I need them the most or shine so that they signal fish or game. But, most importantly, I’ll have to find a pair that is polarized for fishing and looks cool.

Right now, I’m thinking that I would like a pair that is similar to those donned by Teddy Roosevelt, that great American President, hunter and father of the conservation ethic. Ernest Hemingway, another famous sportsman, also wore a similar pair of these wire-rimmed glasses as did John Lennon, so you just know they

are cool.

If I am going to get a pair that is cool, however, this means I will have to bring Jenn along – because, like all women, she knows there is a difference between what Elton John or Dame Edna can get away with, and what the rest of us can.

She has a knack for what is tasteful and appropriate. If not for her, I might have donned a Speedo at last summer’s lakeside office party – she’s still getting thank you notes for that, by the way.

She’s also practical, so she’ll probably make sure that the pair I pick will

be able to stand up to the rigours of accompanying me in typical fishing and hunting situations. So if you see me wearing something that looks like a welding mask, that’s why.

In any case, I am excited about the possibility of getting my visual acuity back so that I can tie on size 16 or even size 20 flies without having to whine to a fellow angler.

Then again, there is the possibility that the doctor just might tell me that my fly box and its contents shrunk – possibly due to exposure to water.

Which would handily explain why I am 5-foot-3.

It’s all about ball hockey in Maryhill this weekend ELENA MAYSTRUK As anyone who sees the Kron’s game room will note, the Maryhill family loves hockey. And, like so many kids growing up in the area, Brian and Brent Kron nurtured their passion for the winter sport with frequent games of road hockey.

It wasn’t a stretch, then, when the brothers linked the desire to do some good in the community with their favourite pastime, resulting in the first charity ball hockey tournament four years ago.

“They just grabbed a ball and stick, closed off the road,” said mom Karen

Kron of the kids in Maryhill.

Since the first outing, the ball hockey tournament organized by the two young men has become something of a tradition in at the Maryhill community centre. As the date neared for this year’s outing, there was a steady buzz in the community.

“At school everyone asks me – lots of people ask for it,” said their sister, Brittany Kron, who is helping out this year.

“As soon as May comes around people are texting us, asking ‘when’s it happening?’ So, yeah, it’s a big hit,” said Brent Kron.

about $10,000 for various causes through the tournament, now in its fourth year. Their first effort to give back to their community brought improvements to Maryhill Heritage Park: $3,600 towards a new chain-link fence around the outdoor skating rink.

The second year, with the help of Travis and Mark Bauman, the boys raised funds for a local family: Jackson and Carter Stone-

man were diagnosed with autism and the proceeds, about $5,500, went to help offset some medical costs.

In its third year, funds went back into the Maryhill park and this year the boys are continuing their contribution to the public space.

“We had good feedback from it so we kept going with it. It gives us another hockey tournament to play in,” said Brent.

By Tuesday (May 28) the tournament was booked solid, with 16 teams registered at $85 apiece bringing in a total of $1,360 for the cause. Fundraising efforts will continue through the weekend as well with a barbecue.

Brent, 21, said he and his brother Brian, 23, have enjoyed holding the tournament, though he admits that by the time Sunday rolls around, everyone in

the family is pretty much exhausted.

“I’d like to continue it and then hopefully one day someone will take it and go with it. Then we can just be part of the tournament as a team and not running the whole show – that would be nice. But, yeah, we enjoy doing it,” he added.

The tournament takes place this weekend, Friday through Sunday, at Maryhill Heritage Park.

Today, St. Jacobs Midwives is home to 10 practitioners who handle a large and diverse client base. Its popularity with the Mennonite community has not

One reason is logistics. It would take gobs of money to make every food-related venue watertight when it comes to terrorism. It’s just not possible.

The changes that have occurred are sure to be a popular topic as former practitioners and clients gather later this month to celebrate the clinic’s 20th anniversary.

“For me, when we celebrate 20 years of midwifery it’s 20 years of care

that we’ve done in this community and Waterloo Region, but also a celebration of remembering those pregnant women and their families and the midwives that came before us that made this possible,” said midwife Julie Cory.

The St. Jacobs clinic was founded by five women: Elsie Cressman, her niece Evelyn Cressman, Maggie Fioravanti, Royce Entwistle, and Louise Tanner. Elsie Cressman, an Old Order Mennonite, died in 2012 at the age of 89 and is still

ing a large base of Mennonite women, and attended to home births. Then, in 1991 the Midwifery Act was passed, and on December 31, 1993 it was proclaimed, making Ontario the first Canadian province to recognize and fund midwifery as part of its health care system.

Now women don’t have to pay out of pocket for a midwife, as the service is covered by OHIP. And midwives now have an established working relationship with hospitals and doctors.

ebbed, but the clinic is also serving clients who enjoy the extra attention and approach of the midwives.

As more women seek out alternatives, the numbers have increased. Still, there are plenty of challenges, Corey admits.

“There are still people

you run into that don’t know what a midwife’s training or education is.

People don’t realize that you’ve gone to school.

It’s a four-year Bachelor of Science university degree, and I’ve actually had people ask me if I had to go to school to learn how to be a midwife. There are

still misconceptions about what we can and can’t do – certainly that can be a challenge.”

It’s important, she added, to make midwifery accessible to all communities in the province and to work on eliminating barriers for midwives who may not be able to work to their full

abilities in some establishments.

“For example, there are reasons why we have to transfer care to a physician whereas if we were at another hospital we wouldn’t have to transfer that care,” she said.

ROBERTS: Research into antimicrobial agents

such as hops helps boost the safety of food FROM | 15

some bright spots on the horizon, starting with local food.

In a roundabout way, local food may have done more to stave off food terrorism than anyone gives it credit for. It’s heightened food awareness exponentially, and helped turn the food sector into more of a community. Sometimes the individual components may squabble, but anyone who wants to make their mark in local food knows they need to push consumers’ buttons for freshness and wholesomeness. Among other things, that means careful attention to quality control, including product safety and security.

The U.S. has been proactive in addressing aspects of food terrorism.

It certainly knows about exposure, and it’s trying to limit it by investing in university research.

For example, take the work of University of Kentucky food chemist Youling Xiong and his research associates. At the 29th annual Alltech Global Symposium in Kentucky ear-

lier this month, Xiong told me that as part of a $2-million National Institute of Hometown Security grant, his graduate student Jamie Greene-Skudlarek found certain herbs contained natural anti-microbial inhibiting properties. These herbs could help stave off illness and promote some degree of food safety in the face of biological warfare or food terrorism.

And the rock star in this research was a common and extremely accessible herb, hops. It made the biggest impression on the Kentucky researchers, who tested more than 50 herbs in total.

It turns out a 10-percent hops extract solution was able to reduce microbial contamination in popular meats to almost zero.

And it gets better. The meat used for this study was not some test-tube experiment, but rather, bologna, one of America’s most popular processed meats. “Bologna is widely consumed,” says Xiong, “and if it was tampered with, the results could be disastrous.” Researchers

sprayed a thin layer of hops on the bologna, and experienced taste panelists could hardly distinguish its presence. All they sensed was a bit of bitterness, a small sacrifice for an elevated level of food safety.

To me, this is a classic case of what goes around comes around. As Xiong says, life experience suggests that for some gastrointestinal ailments, beer is a helpful treatment.

Beer contains hops. And as Xiong’s science shows, hops may be able to do battle with unwanted microbial activity. Is it likewise effective in the gastrointestinal tract?

Could be.

“My parents might have asked the same question: why midwifery school?

Why not medical school?”

Corey said.

“Some people come into midwifery out of an experience of having their own babies and the experience with their own midwives.

Many people come to midwifery never having babies of their own but they realize they want to be in a health care profession where they’ll be working very hands-on with people.”

Elsie Cressman loved delivering babies and delivering their mothers more choice in matters of treatment, procedure and information. Yes, there are still midwives of that

sort as well at the clinic and they will all, past and present have a chance to reunite as the deliverers and delivered come together.

Channeling the best of Stan Rogers Folk Night at the Registry concert will features some classic Canadiana as fans mark 30th anniversary of his death WILL SLOAN “I saw him perform many times, when he was in the area, often in the Garden Street Café in Guelph,” said musician Jack Cole of Canadian folk legend Stan Rogers. “You’d spend half the time laughing, half the time just absorbing the music.”

“Stan was a great performer,” he continued. “He knew the power of being up there and singing one of his really moving songs, then moving onto something a little less serious, and telling a funny story in between.”

Known for songs that put rural Canada – its working-class citizens, its scenic beauty, its history – to the forefront, Stan Rogers completed just four albums in his lifetime, but his influence is still felt in folk music circles today.

This month marks the thirtieth anniversary of his death in a plane crash at age 33, and Cole’s Folk Night series at the Registry Theatre is paying tribute with a celebration of his life and work.

“Remembering Stan Rogers” will unite Cole with performers Paul Mills, Anne Lederman, Brad Nelson, and Dan Patterson for a run-through of Rogers’ greatest-hits, as well as some lesser-known tracks. The show, which began life five years ago, has connections to the late folk star: Mills, a friend of Rogers’, will play Rogers’ own 12-string guitar, which survived the crash

Well-known standards like “Barrett’s Privateers” and “45 Years from Now” (plus deep cuts like “Second Effort,” “Working Joe,” and “Made on the Shore”) will be brought out for the audience, in a memorial show that Cole promises will be more celebratory than solemn.

“We’ve chosen a lineup of songs that will let people who know Stan’s music sing along and join in,” said Cole.

“The song ‘Second Ef-

fort’ was commissioned by the CBC, and it’s a song about being an Olympic athlete,” said Cole. “Stan, being Stan, didn’t write it from the point of view of, ‘Wow, I’m an Olympic athlete.’ He wrote it from the point of view of the person who lost, and how hard it would be to pick himself up again.

“There are just little gems of lines, like, ‘I bet they cleared away the parlour so my ma could dance me in the door’ …

That little line captures so

much, and that was Stan’s trademark.”

But given how important albums like Fogarty’s Cove, Turnaround, and Northwest Passage are to Canadian music fans, is it intimidating trying to follow in Rogers’ footsteps?

“Absolutely,” Cole replied. “Stan’s songs are almost holy ground. Nathan Rogers, Stan’s son, is really the only one I think who has successfully rearranged them and had everyone say, ‘Oh, that’s really good.’ Most people

Ron Logel is lovingly remembered by his sister Donna Schill and her husband Bryan (Ron’s good friend) of Listowel, and his brother John and his wife Kathy of Elmira. Looking for a positive in the face of a family tragedy

Parents of Austin Padaric make no bones about son’s drug overdose in trying to educate young people WILL SLOAN Since the death of their 17-year-old son in April, Christine and Klaus Padaric have been on the campaign trail. Through a string of interviews with news outlets like CTV, CBC, and the Record, and a series of education projects in Woolwich and Wellesley, the Wellesley couple have devoted themselves to spreading awareness and understanding on the perils of drug use.

When Austin Padaric overdosed on hydromorphone pills at a party in Elmira, his condition was not reported until six hours had passed. Lack of oxygen to the brain led to Padaric falling into a coma, from which he would never emerge. It was during her son’s period in the hospital that Christine Padaric’s activism tentatively began.

“I started a blog right from day-one,” said Christine in their Heidelberg home. “I’ve documented the whole process of Austin’s admission into ICU, transfer to McMaster, the decline, and carrying on forward from there with more of a message of educating kids on the risks of drug use.”

She is not unrealistic.

“Kids are going to take risks. They’re always going to experiment with things. … One in six kids have tried prescription drugs for recreational purposes. You need to know what you’re dealing

“I was giving updates on his health status, but I was also giving a message of optimism, and trying to keep the kids thinking very positively and optimistically,” she remembered.

“Then as things started to

decline, I would sprinkle in some messages about opiate overdose. What are the signs? What do you do?”

Q. What was so special

about Albert Einsteinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brain that enabled him to become a towering scientific genius?

A. Perhaps just such a curiosity drove examining pathologist Thomas Harvey to photograph Einsteinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brain after his death in 1955 and then cut it into 240 blocks, reports â&#x20AC;&#x153;Scienceâ&#x20AC;? magazine. Only recently did these newly discovered photos prompt a reexamination of the original brain, as researchers led by Florida State University anthropologist Dean Falk analyzed 14 photos never previously

made public (the journal â&#x20AC;&#x153;Brainâ&#x20AC;?).

When compared with records of 85 other brains in the scientific literature, the team found that Einsteinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brain was indeed special: Though its size was just average, several regions displayed â&#x20AC;&#x153;unusual twists and folds,â&#x20AC;? especially on the left side connected to the face and tongue. These folds were â&#x20AC;&#x153;much larger than normal,â&#x20AC;? as was Einsteinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prefrontal cortex, linked to planning, focused attention and perseverance. It was this singular brain that first formulated the groundbreaking theory of relativity.

Yet, adds the magazine, â&#x20AC;&#x153;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not clear how these many extra folds and convolutions translated into Einsteinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing abilities.â&#x20AC;?

start a petition to have the Wellesley multi-use sports pad named for the late teen.

The petition, which collected 2,000 signatures, was pitched to township council on Tuesday night, and is currently under consideration.

“What you read in the papers is, youth are disengaged at all levels when it

comes to voting and politics,” said Klaus Padaric.

“You couldn’t as a politician say, ‘How do we engage the kids?’ and then, when they’re engaged, say, ‘Go away.’”

Christine cites this youthled initiative as a powerful example of young people taking drug education into their own hands. “Instead of having adults lecture kids with assemblies and public

service announcements, what it does is, the kids will talk to each other,” she said.

“It’s a problem with kids, so let the kids talk amongst themselves.”

Christine is also hoping to form a chapter of Narcotics Anonymous in Woolwich or Wellesley (neither township currently has one, though there are some in Kitchener-Waterloo).

She has been in touch with

a church in Elmira, though the initiative has not yet been passed by its board of directors.

In addition, she is in touch with a Toronto student filmmaker who has recently completed a documentary about his struggle with meth addiction. She hopes to arrange screenings in Elmira, Waterloo, and surrounding areas, hopefully sometime in

June before school lets out.

“I think it’s important to be vocal that Austin died of a drug overdose,” said Klaus. “Putting that on the table really allows his friends to talk freely about who Austin was, and what Austin meant to them.

They don’t have to talk about Austin in hushed tones and secrecy.”

Added Christine, “In the last month, Austin was

learning about the law of attraction, and positive thinking, and if you surround yourself with positive people, positive outcomes will come your way.

He was just getting into it.

So I wanted to continue that message positively for Austin.”

Brush two baking sheets with oil; set aside; In a wide, shallow bowl, whisk together eggs and 2 tablespoons water; In another bowl, combine breadcrumbs, parmesan, oregano, basil, garlic powder, chili flakes and then season with salt and pepper; Dip eggplant slices in egg mixture, letting excess drip off, then dredge in breadcrumb mixture, coating well; place on baking sheets. Bake until golden brown on bottom, 20 to 25 minutes; Turn slices and continue baking until browned on other side, 20 to 25 minutes more. Remove

from oven, raise oven heat to 400 degrees.

Spread 2 cups of your favourite tomato sauce in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Arrange half the eggplant in dish, cover with 2 cups sauce, then 1/2 cup mozzarella; Repeat with remaining eggplant, sauce, and mozzarella; sprinkle with remaining 2 tablespoons parmesan. Bake until sauce is bubbling and cheese is melted, 15 to 20 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
