New Breslau school is WRDSB’s top priority in the townships FAISAL ALI AN OVERVIEW OF PUBLIC schools in the Waterloo Region sees the need for a new elementary school in Breslau to keep up with the rapidly growing community, while several other schools were identified for expansions.

In a long term accommodation plan (LTAP) document that was approved in principle by Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) trustees, the upcoming subdivision of Breslau-Hopewell Creek (Thomasfield) was listed as a priority location for a new school building. However, how much the province, now under new management, agrees with that assessment will ultimately determine when the project is funded.

The LTAP essentially lists each school in the region, and compares their student populations with the school’s max capacities to help decide where new schools and classrooms are needed.

Ament/ Herrgott intersection to become a roundabout FAISAL ALI CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW roundabout at a St. Clements intersection deemed dangerous by residents should get underway next week.

A decision last week by regional council to award the work to E&E Seegmiller Ltd. – a contract worth $1.7 million – cleared the final hurdle to upgrading the intersection of Ament Line and Herrgott Road.

A longstanding concern for residents of Wellesley Township since a fatal collision that claimed the life of five-year-old Emma Ringrose in 2005, the intersection was approved for a roundabout in late 2016 According to regional police records, between 2011 and 2016, there were on average 2.7 collisions at the intersection a year, reaching a maximum of five collisions in 2014. There was exactly one collision recorded each year in that time period that resulted in personal injuries, while a fatality occurred in 2015.

According to the region’s director of design and construction, Phil Bauer, there have been two fatal collisions at that intersection since 2005.

The cost of roundabout is estimated at just over $2 million, a significantly higher amount than the four-way stop sign the region had initially suggested installing instead. Residents rejected the recommendation as a Band-Aid solution.

VERONICA REINER IT’S NOT CANADA’S 150TH, but the start of summer is a pretty good reason for a barbecue. Wellesley Township is doing just that next week, hosting its second annual Backyard BBQ community event.

While last year the event was organized on Canada Day, this year the date is set for June 22. It will feature fireworks, food, fun, and more. It will also feature live music from the classic rock band Crackerjack Palace, who played at the event last year.

“Yeah, we’re definitely looking forward to playing at the barbecue,” said Grand Heywood, who plays drums and lead vocals in the band. “Obviously being I’m from Wellesley Township, there will be a lot of people there that we know.

I know Joe Nowak, the mayor. And let’s face it; it’s a small town, so you get to know a lot of people. It’ll be a great event.”

Organizers expect the turnout to be similar to last year, when an estimated 1,200 people attended.

“Weather pending, we’ll see something similar, maybe a bit less than that,” said Denny. “The more, the merrier, really.”

“We really hope the turnout will be the same,” said

Amy Harron, administrative assistant at the Township of Wellesley. “We will have hamburgers, hot dogs and sausage for sale, as well as a community information forum. All departments will be represented at the community forum along with community organizations.”

There are plenty of other features at the event, such as a touch truck.

“That’s something for

the kids where they can crawl in and out of the vehicles including a police cruiser, dump trucks, and fire trucks as well,” said Denny.

Members of the band are primarily local. They play a variety of music, including covers of The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Steely Dan and the Eagles. According to Heywood, they prefer to do these types of events.

“We do a lot of fundraiser stuff,” said Heywood.

“We’re doing one for Stratford in November for a hospice. I think this is our sixth or seventh year in Bancroft, Ontario where we raise money for a local hospice there. The reason why it’s Bancroft is that Danny, our bass player, is from there. We don’t play hotels at all – we’re not a band to go out and play bars or that sort of thing, we do fundraising type of events. “ While admission is free for the Backyard BBQ, organizers would appreciate a donation to the food bank.

There are also several paid events, including the barbecue from 5 to 8 p.m. and a cash bar.

“Essentially, all are welcome,” said Denny. “It’s an excellent family-oriented event with a lot of the community coming together in one place hosted by the municipality. We hope to see lots of people out.”

The Backyard BBQ is set for June 22, running from 5 to 11 p.m. at the township administrative building, 4639 Lobsinger Line in Crosshill. Anyone interested in learning more can visit www.wellesley.ca.

caucus meeting will be held early next week. We’ll be outlining a little bit more policy procedure over that point. We also have a couple of orientation sessions coming that are being put on by the legislative assembly, just to get new MPPs familiarized with the process, and of course a bit of a refresher for the stalwarts that have been there for a while.”

Complicating matters, however, is the lack of a party platform, which was torpedoed after the resignation of the former party leader Patrick Brown in January. The sudden departure of Brown, followed by the equally tumultuous leadership race from which Doug Ford emerged, has left the party making changes on the fly.

Promises have been made throughout the campaign, from lowering taxes and balancing the books, to ending hallway medicine and funding a GO Train service between Waterloo and Toronto. But where

the money will actually come from remains to be seen.

“I think that’s the big question. That’s the big question that we don’t have an answer to because we don’t know how some of these promises will be paid for,” noted Anna Esselment, associate professor of political science at the University of Waterloo.

With the Ford campaign’s promise to scour the province’s ledgers for “efficiencies,” calculating costs and getting a handle on the province’s finances may be amongst the PC government’s first priorities, she suggests.

“I would think because one of their main ideas was to go through the books, the provincial books, line by line to discover efficiencies. I imagine that the cabinet would probably be spending July and August doing that process,” said Esselment.

hard to come by, however.

“It’s going to be very challenging for him to find efficiencies in part because the debt is going to be much bigger than the Liberals let on,” he noted.

“In general he wants to cut taxes, he wants to cut spending, but he doesn’t want to basically acknowledge that he’s doing it. He suggested that nobody is going to be fired, that all the programs are going to run just as efficiently, he thinks he’s just going to find ‘efficiencies’... which will reduce spending by four per cent,” said Kay. “But he suggested nothing specific about how he’s going to do it.”

For first-time politician Harris, the priority now would be to prepare his staff, his constituency office and himself for the inner-workings of Queen’s Park. The potential for a cabinet position is something he’s open to.

“I’ll be very honest with you, it’s up to the party,” said Harris. “They’re the ones that will decide. We’ve got 76 great MPPs and we’ve got a wealth of experience to draw on in many different sectors, and I look forward to playing whatever role I can in our new government.”

While a rookie to the legislature, Harris is no stranger to Queen’s Park.

Being the son of former premier Mike Harris., the younger Harris says that he hopes he’ll be able to continue to draw on his father’s extensive experience.

“We’ve got to accomplish over the next, we’ll say, year or two ... I think navigating the debt structure and really getting a handle on the books at Queen’s Park is going to be top of mind for our government,” he said.

“We knocked on thousands and thousands of doors over the last few weeks, and hydro concerns were probably the numberone thing that people brought forward. And just

the general affordability of living in Ontario. Making sure that we have good jobs here, bringing back manufacturing jobs to Waterloo Region is going to be something that I’m hoping that I can really help with.

And getting that two-way all-day GO train service in place.”

Then there’s the question of where to live as Harris, a 33-year-old father of five living just outside the riding’s boundaries, is looking to move into the neighbourhood.

“Absolutely, it’s going to be something that will happen in short order for us.

We’ve already started looking at houses,” he said.

The Progressive Conservatives turned widespread public hostility towards Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals into a solid majority, taking 76 of 124 seats and making Doug Ford the new premier.

For Harris, the son of the former Ontario premier Mike Harris, this will be his first foray into politics as an elected official.

“I’m ecstatic,” said Harris in the immediate aftermath of the vote, mirroring the triumphant mood amongst supporters, who were out celebrating in St. Jacobs.

“This is something that I’ve wanted to do for a very long time. It’s been something that’s always been on my mind. I’m sure you’ve heard me say at some point politics has been in my blood for 34 years, and my family is over the moon, and so am I.” As part of a PC majority government, Harris’s message to constituents is direct: “Help is on the way.”

“As I knocked on doors in all the corners of the Wilmot, Wellesley, Woolwich and Kitchener, I heard the same thing. Life has become unaffordable, and government is the reason.

In fact, government has become the problem, not the solution and that ends tonight.”

Hot on his heels was NDP candidate Kelly Dick, a first for the party that has typically placed a distant third in the riding. Dick came within 700 votes of Harris, splitting the vote almost evenly between them at 38 per cent and 39.6 per cent, respectively.

The distant-third spot this time around belonged to Liberal candidate Joe Gowing, who claimed just 6,000 votes – or 14 per cent of the ballots cast. The Liberals have in previous

elections been the Conservatives’ most serious rivals in the Kitchener-Conestoga riding, but Gowing’s underperformance at the polls in this election was replicated in the province-wide results, which saw Liberal party support evaporate – its seven seats falls one short of maintaining official party status.

Behind Gowing in the riding was the Green Party’s Bob Jonkman, who placed fourth with 2,800 votes, just slightly under half that of the Liberal candidate. Had just a few Green Party supporters switched allegiance to the NDP, the entire riding could very easily have been tipped into orange territory.

Although locally the Green Party’s fortunes changed little from the previous election, over in the neighbouring riding of Guelph the party won its first-ever provincial nomination. Mike Schreiner was elected as the very first Green MPP in the province.

In fifth and sixth place in Kitchener-Conestoga were Libertarian candidate Daniel Benoy and the Consensus Party’s Dan Holt, who won 1.3 and 0.5 per cent of the ballots cast, respectively.

Poll-by-poll results released this week show voters in Woolwich and Wellesley largely supported Harris, with Dick the choice of the second-largest number of residents (there was a slight edge for the NDP at the station at Calvary United Church in St. Jacobs, for instance).

It was the PC Party of Ontario that rose to the top of this election, however, claiming 76 seats out of a possible 124, winning a clear majority. In opposition is the NDP, which won 40 seats; the rise in the New Democrats in the province marked the fall of the Liberals, who managed just seven.

The victors will have a moment to celebrate their successes after a hardfought campaign, but with election over, attentions will quickly have to turn to governance, and to Ontario’s entrenched problems.

“My number-one goal is representing the people of Kitchener-Conestoga.

That’s my number-one goal and it will always be my number-one focus,” said Harris. “What the PC party has planned for me, I have no idea at this point. I’m sure we’ll get some phone calls coming in over the next few days and kind of get a better lay of the land.”

Region hosts aviation convention The region and, specifically, the Region of Waterloo International Airport are playing host this week to the Canadian Business Aviation Association convention and exhibit.

About 600 business aviation professionals are expected to attend the two-day convention, known as business aviation’s biggest event.

“We are delighted to welcome Canada’s business aviation leaders to

the Waterloo Region,” said Chris Wood, airport general manager in a release.

“Business aviation is an important part of our airport community, and a critical asset for many of the companies headquartered in the region. We are very pleased that we are able to show these influential leaders our dynamic community and facilities.”

Business aviation is an economic powerhouse in Canada, generating $12.1 billion annually, and employing 47,000 Canadians – 23,000 of them directly Onsite displays, including a selection of planes, go Thursday at the airport.

Regional police pick up a pair of award from Ontario Association THE WATERLOO REGIONAL POLICE Service has received two awards from the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police.

The Community Safety and Crime Prevention Award was presented to the WRPS for its response to the ongoing opioid crisis. To help raise awareness of the crisis, regional police partnered with the public health unit, paramedic services, school boards and the Waterloo Regional integrated drug strategy to create solutions to prevent crime and make their community safer, police said in a release.

The resulting drug strategy included the launch of social media campaigns, such as #TheNewFWord, more than 30 presentations by the drug and firearms unit to community groups and an action plan to address prevention, treatment, harm reduction and enforcement surrounding overdose issues.

“Waterloo Regional Police Service’s response to the opioid crisis is an excellent example of how law enforcement can bring different community groups together to address common goals,” said Greater Sudbury Police Chief Paul Pedersen, Chair of the OACP Community Safety and Crime Prevention Committee. WRPS was also awarded the OACP Outstanding Liquor Enforcement Award for work done by its Oktoberfest policing

unit in ensuring a safe and enjoyable 2017 Oktoberfest.

“The work of the Oktoberfest Policing Unit demonstrated the dedication of our members and partners to make Oktoberfest a safe experience for all who attended,” said Waterloo Regional Police Chief Bryan Larkin. “There is a lot of preparation that goes into planning for large events such as these and we are proud of the work done by everyone to ensure this popular event runs as smoothly as possible.”

The awards were presented on June 12 during the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police’s annual meeting in Huntsville.

MAN AIRLIFTED AFTER BUGGY FLIPS

Emergency crews responded to Ament Line west of Linwood on June 7 after a horse-drawn buggy flipped over. A man was airlifted to hospital with a suspected collapsed lung. The horses were spooked due to a car skidding in front of them, but were not injured.

A roadside screening test was conducted which resulted in a fail. She was arrested and brought to a local OPP operations centre for further testing. The 48-year-old Kitchener resident was charged with ‘driving with over 80 mgs of alcohol in 100mL of blood.’ A 90-day licence suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment were initiated as per statute. She is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on July 6.

2:11 AM | Emergency crews responded to a report of a fire at a residence on Apple Grove Road in Woolwich Township. The residents were able to escape without any injuries. The residence sustained major fire and smoke damage.

As a result of the investigation, a 52-year-old woman was charged with ‘arson endangering life.’

10:16 PM | A 59-year-old Conestogo woman was driving a black Toyota westbound on Line 86 when she lost control of her vehicle, which crossed the roadway, struck the opposite shoulder and veered back across both lanes of traffic

before entering the ditch and rolling over onto its roof. The driver was transported to hospital with minor injuries and the vehicle was towed from the scene. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

1:04 AM | A 20-year-old Cambridge woman driving a grey Mazda travelling northbound on Arthur Street at the Sawmill Road roundabout was involved in a single-vehicle collision. The driver stated she fell asleep and veered off the roadway, sliding into the ditch.

A passerby noticed the taillights in the ditch and stopped to assist. Police were contacted and responded to the scene, subsequently charging the woman with ‘careless driving.’

No injuries reported and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

1:44 PM | A 60-year-old Cambridge man driving a black Nissan van northbound on King Street in St. Jacobs came to a stop as he waited to turn left onto Printery Road when he was struck from behind by a motorcycle. The 82-year-old man was riding the black Honda motorcycle sustained minor injuries and was transported to hospital. He was charged with ‘careless driving.’

2:17 PM | Sometime between 9 and 9:45 p.m., an unknown suspect entered Scrubbles Laundry on Oriole Parkway West in Elmira and attempted to break into various pieces of equipment. The suspect is described as a white male teenager, wearing a grey winter toque, a two-tone blue hoodie and track pants, carrying a backpack. Police are asking anyone with information regarding this attempted theft to contact the Waterloo Regional Police rural detachment at 519570-9777 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

4:00 PM | Wellington County OPP responded to a serious workplace injury in Elora.

Initial reports indicated that a 27-year-old male had sustained serious trauma to his right hand while operating a mill. OPP as well as Centre Wellington Fire Rescue and Guelph-Wellington Paramedics Services attended and treated the patient. He was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and then airlifted to a trauma centre. The Ministry of Labour (MOL) is investigating.

An open house event Monday evening in West Montrose focused on emergency preparedness rather than assessing what happened June 23, 2017, as has been the case at previous public meetings. Woolwich officials were joined by representatives from groups such the Red Cross, Waterloo Regional Police and Mennonite Disaster Service for a public education forum to inform residents about the various services provided in an emergency situation, as well as how to prepare for the worst.

“It’s more about how the resident can really prepare themselves and their family,” said Avril Tanner, Woolwich’s community

emergency management coordinator. “There’s lots that a homeowner can do before a flood even occurs, like preparing a family emergency kit. So things you might need for your family if you needed to evacuate.”

The Grand River Conservation Authority has made changes to flooding notifications after the flood that took place last year.

“They’ve now created what’s called a flood zone,” explained Tanner. “So the properties that are in different zones and that will go along with the notification piece.”

The changes came in the wake of complaints the agency didn’t get the word out fast enough after heavy rains in the north end of the river system in the early hours of June 23 swelled waterways beyond the capacity of downstream dams. The GRCA has also moved to update its mapping of the system to better predict flooding incidents.

“We try to get out to these events as much as we can because it’s one of those services where until you need us, people don’t really know who we are,” he added.

There are other factors to consider in a crisis situation. Thorough preparedness beforehand is crucial for pets in emergencies, according to Tanner.

“You might want to think about having a plan ahead of time as well. So thinking about if you had to leave the town that you live in, think of a shelter that’s out of town plus one that’s in town that you’re more familiar with,” she said. “Have arrangements pre-made, so you’ve thought ahead of time if you need to put them in a shelter. If we have to have a reception centre or something like that, sometimes pets aren’t allowed, so that’s really hard on people. So having that process thought through ahead of time is an excellent idea.”

“Obviously, the rumble strips and the signs aren’t enough. The all-way stop isn’t going to help either,” she said.

“It sickens me to know our efforts have been in vain. Collisions continue to occur and another life has been lost. I don’t want to see any more of our money wasted on Band-Aid solutions. A roundabout is what is needed to save lives. The

research has been done. To ignore that fact is putting people’s lives at risk.”

The project will require hydro and gas utilities to be relocated, storm sewer system construction and new paving.

“On the outside of the curb lines we are constructing a wide paved shoulder that will act as a multi-use trail for pedestrians or cyclists,” noted Bauer.

“It is also anticipated that some buggy users will feel more comfortable straddling the paved shoulder or driving on it entirely

until they get to the roundabout. The curb and gutter at this location will be semi-mountable with an exposed aggregate finish (easier for horses to cross without slipping).

“On the south leg of Herrgott Road there is a vertical curve that has substandard sightlines for implementation of a roundabout.

We are ‘shaving’ down the crest of this hill to meet the design criteria,” he added.

Work is scheduled to begin this coming Monday, and be substantially complete by August 31.

approved, the school board looks at whether the existing schools in the area can accommodate the increase in students.

“But in this case we do have a full Breslau Public School,” she said. “We did do an addition there not too long ago, only just a few years ago. But at that time we knew that this other subdivision was coming on, so realistically Breslau is just a really big growth area for us right now. So we did require that an additional facility be added to the mix to support that population increase.”

Breslau PS is currently operating at about 100 students over its capacity of 565 students – or 17 per cent above capacity (based on 2017 numbers).

The additional students are accommodated in portables, which are typically considered less preferable to brick-and-mortar classrooms. A new school in Breslau may mean some students are moved out of the current public school, though a boundary study has yet to be done.

How the new school might look or be designed is also up in the air, and ultimately depends on whether the funding is approved. Some of the public input for creating the LTAP stressed the need for more outdoor spaces in new schools and even outdoor classrooms. The public also preferred schools with compact designs that emphasized height over sprawling campuses.

But probably a good indication of how a new school in Breslau might look would be the new Riverside PS in Elmira, which has a childcare centre sharing the campus.

“One of the other components that we’re doing, and are actually mandated to do through the Planning Act, is to design schools with community hubs in mind. So that would mean we would be looking for partners anytime that we build new schools,” said Agar.

“Our typical partners are child care providers and the Ministry now funds childcare spaces, and we’ve been successful in a few of our more recent

projects for elementary schools to get funding for childcare spaces with those schools.

“But other uses could be community facilities ... libraries, pools, that sort of thing, so that we’re maximizing public facilities, or public land, by providing everything in one central location.”

Last year, the WRDSB requested $12.8 million from the province for the Breslau school, but was rejected. As the province takes on the construction costs for new schools in the region, the timelines for a new facility will ultimately depend on it. The WRDSB is still in talks with the Hopewell Creek developer to find a location for the school.

Beyond Breslau, the public schools in Conestogo and Wellesley were listed as somewhat over capacity, though population projections expect to see a decline in the number of students attending each one. St. Jacobs was comfortably within its margin; while Floradale and Linwood were substantially underutilized.

With a maximum capacity of 340 students, Floradale only has a student body of 241 – essentially meaning that a full 30 per cent of the school is being underused. For Linwood, with a capacity of 528 but only a population of 403, more than a hundred students could be added to and still be under capacity.

In Elmira, the school board is also requesting funds for an addition to John Mahood PS. The current student population of 432 is 13 per cent above the school’s 381 capacity. Park Manor and Riverside PS by contrast are well within their classroom limits.

The township’s high school, EDSS, is also using portables to accommodate its large student population. The school’s current population of 1,299 is 22 per cent above the school’s actual capacity of 1,062.

The population is also projected to grow in the LTAP by another 500 students in the next five years. The school board is looking into classroom additions for the school if the population does indeed continue to increase.

Our ag. industry is one of Trump’s latest targets JUST HOURS AFTER BADMOUTHING Canada and other G7 allies, U.S. President Donald Trump was embracing North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un like a long-lost friend.

While the spectacle in Singapore revealed Trump at his delusional best, the make-believe deal he agreed to will have no impact on life here or south of the border. The same can’t be said for Trump’s fit of pique and desire for a very real trade war with Canada and the EU, among others.

There are very real threats to the steel, aluminum and auto industries, with companies on both sides of the border forecasting hardship and job losses. Facts and economic reality played no part in the Trump’s decisions. He also vented his spleen on Canada’s agricultural sector, specifically supply management. The latter is nothing new, as opening up Canadian markets to foreign agricultural products is a longstanding part of so-called free trade negotiations.

The concept of food security, which extends to a local food movement that goes beyond supply-managed goods, doesn’t enter into the equation for Trump and those who share his views.

Undoubtedly some Canadians will rejoice at the prospect of lower prices in the supermarket. That’s certainly not a bad thing, though not guaranteed, and at what cost? The likely result of supply management’s demise will be fewer Canadian farmers. Those that do remain will be larger conglomerates, hardly in keeping with local food campaigns. There’s every reason to believe we will be subjected to food with far fewer controls. And, in the long run, there’s likely to be no savings, as we’ll end up with more direct agricultural subsidies – the lower prices of goods in the U.S. and European Union, for instance, stem from heavy subsidization. You either pay at the checkout counter or you pay through your taxes.

The pursuit of ever-cheaper costs risks not only Canada’s food security – making us more dependent on imports for an essential like food – but also our health. This is most evident in food imports from China, though that country is not part of trade discussions at this point (though subject to the mood swings of the U.S. president). The quality and treatment of foodstuffs from that country are suspect, and federal laws aren’t overly helpful in protecting consumer interests, let alone our safety.

Such imports fly in the face of a growing desire to buy food as locally as possible. The practice also hides from consumers information that might lead them to choose another product because of safety concerns about goods from suspect parts of the globe.

Food’s connection to our health and well-being – an emphasis on local food – will be front and center at the upcoming Taste of Woolwich event, which emphasizes a range of issues at play for a healthier and more sustainable future, as food comes with economic, health and environmental impacts. Generally, the more local the food, the better the outcomes on all fronts.

The goal of the event is to showcase what’s available locally, to demonstrate how incorporating local food into our diets needn’t be a chore and to have some fun doing it.

From a marketplace through to cooking demonstrations, the emphasis will be on what local food can do for you.

Local food does tend to cost a little more, but consumers benefit through fresher food and there’s a multiplier effect on the economy, as every local agricultural job support another four jobs. The more educated people are about the benefits of local food, they’re more likely to pay a bit more for it, say proponents of the local-food movement.

Trump’s trade delusion on display in post-G7 outburst WORLD AFFAIRS Halfway across the Pacific Ocean, Donald Trump heard the closing statements from the G7 summit in Quebec (which he had left early to meet North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un in Singapore).

All the G7 countries had signed up to an anodyne closing communiqué that papered over the huge gap between the United States and the other six on world trade – but Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau then said once again that he would answer Trump’s big new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports with new Canadian tariffs hitting U.S. exports just as hard.

He had said it before, including to Trump’s face just the previous day. The other national leaders present in Quebec said exactly the same thing, and none of them had changed their positions before the final communiqué was agreed.

But Trump flew into a rage.

No jumped-up leader of

a rinky-dink country like Canada was going to get away with talking to the president of the United States like that. Trump retracted his endorsement of the joint communiqué, called Trudeau “very dishonest and weak,” and hinted heavily that his next target would be Canada’s car-making industry (which is almost completely integrated with its U.S. counterpart).

No surprises here. The other countries of what used to be called ‘the West’ have grown used to Trump’s tweeted outbursts, and French President Emmanuel Macron restricted himself to saying that “international co-operation cannot be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks.”

True enough, but what also needs to be said loudly and often (but generally isn’t) is that the whole confrontation over trade is irrelevant to Trump’s real political concern, which is vanishing American jobs.

He’s not just barking up the wrong tree on this issue; he is baying at the moon.

Trump’s line is that the very high unemployment

rate in the United States (which he is almost alone among American politicians in acknowledging) has been caused by free trade. The evil foreigners took advantage of gullible Americans to make free trade deals, and then lured ruthless American manufacturers to relocate their factories in their low-wage homelands.

This only made sense for American manufacturers if there was more or less free trade between their new base and the United States, so that they could still sell their products back home without tariffs. For Trump, therefore, free trade is the mother of all evils. But while more than a million American jobs did get sent abroad like that in the 1990s, very few have been exported in the past 15 years.

In the first decade of the 21st century, the United States lost one-third of all its manufacturing jobs, and the vast majority of them were killed by automation.

They didn’t ‘go’ anywhere.

They just vanished.

It happened first in what became known as the Rust Belt, because that was the

main centre of assemblyline industry in the U.S. Assembly lines, which break a complex task down into a series of simple and highly repetitive actions, are the easiest thing in the world to automate.

Job destruction then slowed down until other new computer-driven technologies matured: selfdriving vehicles, on-line shopping, ‘dark’ factories and warehouses. But they are ready now, and the carnage in retail jobs, driving jobs and warehouse jobs is just getting underway.

To worry about free trade while this is going on is pure folly.

Not only has the ‘offshoring’ of jobs virtually stopped, but there is a new phenomenon called ‘reshoring.’ Some American manufacturers are bringing their factories home, because with full automation you have to hire only one-tenth of the high-paid American workers you used to employ, and by reshoring you get to work in a predictable legal environment in your own language.

Election over, let’s see if Ford can govern better than his campaign indicated EDITOR'S NOTES Comparisons between Doug Ford and Donald Trump are unlikely to subside now that the provincial election is over. Had the Progressive Conservatives lost, Ford would have immediately hit the scrapheap, never to be heard from again, but as premier he’s now fair game for even more scrutiny.

Much like Trump supporters, Ford fans will chafe at every criticism of their man. While some of the comparisons between the two leaders are a stretch, there’s no denying that both are long on bombast and short on facts, substance and wellreasoned positions. Each is a polarizing figure that invites personal invective from citizens and an extra helping of media scrutiny.

Trump has proven to be a nightmare, living down to the worst of critics’ expectations; the jury is still out on Ford, who doesn’t take the helm until later

this month. (That said, there’s a large part of the public that has already written him off.)

A fair judgment of Ford as premier – as opposed to his well-publicized personal foibles – will emerge in the coming months.

Will he tone down the bullying approach of the past in favour of a more professional persona? More importantly, will he translate populist sloganeering into actual governance in the public good, an approach which has been in short supply not only in this province, but across many purported democracies, most notably of late in Trump’s America.

Sound bites about the $6-million man and cheaper beer may have been fine for the campaign trail, but the Tories didn’t provide much in the way of a platform, and provided little in the way of costing. Such promises that were made continue the years of deficits with which Ontario has been burdened.

and the long-term public good in favour of electioneering, misguided ideology and payoffs to corporate backers. Just like pretty much every other mainstream political party, though often with more self-righteous hypocrisy.

To continue with the Trump comparisons, Ford was not overtly ideological on the campaign trail – neither man seems particularly interested in policies and ideas beyond taking power. Our problem with Conservative governments boils down to ideology: Deep down, we don’t like what they’re selling.

It’s the same reason most of us, if we had a vote, would support Democrats and not Republicans in U.S. elections.

Again, there’s a simple pattern to be found. Rightwing governments tend to cut spending on things we benefit from, spend on things we don’t, run deficits, privatize assets to the benefit of a few supporters and deregulate where a watchful eye is needed.

And that doesn’t even address the distasteful fundamentalist positions

and social conservatism, which have crept into Canadian politics at times.

Taking ideology out of the mix, particularly social conservatism, would be a boon to Ontarians, but we still don’t know how a Ford government will act once in power. Ideally, he takes a different tack than the Ontario PC government that preceded the 15-year Liberal reign, which followed too much of the traditional rightwing playbook. Taking a hardline stance where necessary is one thing, but constant militancy is another.

Ford should also avoid the divisiveness of Stephen Harper, which took duplicity to new depths while again failing to manage the country’s finances to the public’s benefit. In that, Harper took after his Conservative predecessor, Brian Mulroney, whose governments ran up massive deficits during good times, introduced the GST and free trade despite public opposition and spent money like sailors on shore leave, all the while widening the gap

between rich and poor.

The same scenario played out with other so-called fiscal conservatives at the time, most notably Ronald Reagan in the U.S. and Margaret Thatcher in the U.K. None is a role model for Ford ... or the kind of Ford government most Ontarians voted for in jettisoning Wynne, whose regime is also a clear example of how not to govern in the public good.

Beyond being annoyed with government waste – see just about every bit of news coming out of Ottawa and Queen’s Park these days, as Ford made clear in his campaign – what’s really at stake is the legitimacy of government itself.

That may sound dramatic, but if the bureaucracies are seen as bloated and self-serving, it becomes easier to write off all of the good thing that governments do. There is already a strong contingent that would downsize and eventually neuter government, which is essentially our way of working together KANNON | 10

porters talked about cuts and job losses. The Conservatives responded with denials, the anti-Hudak backlash from Liberalbacking slush funds in the 2014 election still fresh in their minds. But cuts are precisely what’s needed to get the budget back on track. And the new government will have to make large changes to the spending priorities if it wants to better position Ontario for a future of sound infrastructure and fiscal prudence.

That’s the vision that voters often buy into when voting for conservative governments – though this election was all about getting rid of Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals, not about endorsing Ford, which the party needs to take to heart – only to be disappointed in short order.

Decades of history in this province and across the country – and more disastrously to the south – have shown us that ersatz conservative governments routinely abandon good fiscal management, streamlined government

The overall vacancy rate for seniors’ residences declined to a record low of 9.9% in 2018 from 10.3% in 2017. Total supply of seniors’ housing grew by 3,500 spaces, the most since 2001. The average rent for a standard space increased by 2.6% to $3,618. Some 59,351 seniors, equivalent to 5.5% of the total population aged 75 years and over in Ontario, lived in the 721 residences in the province.

“We now have a platform to evaluate health behaviours of Canadian men over time. I hope other researchers will use this platform to study different populations around the globe and design targeted interventions to engage men to live healthier lifestyles. After all, 70% of men’s chronic health conditions are caused by lifestyle and, unlike genetics, can be changed to improve your health.”

Trump can do a lot of damage to employment both elsewhere and in the United States by launching a trade war, but he cannot ‘bring the jobs back.’ They are gone for good, and a lot more will follow. Automation may be slowed down here and there for a while, but eventually it will eliminate at least half the existing jobs – and the notion that it will create equivalent numbers of new good jobs is an amiable myth.

So while the leaders of other rich countries will have to divert some atten-

tion and effort to coping with the negative impacts of Trump’s trade war, they must not let that become their obsession too. It’s a side issue, though potentially a very expensive one.

In Canada, in France, in Japan, in all the developed countries, the real problem is the same as it is in the U.S.: the inexorable advance of automation and the resulting haemorrhage of jobs. So devote most of your attention to that, and only respond to Trump’s declaration of trade war to the extent that is politically unavoidable.

In the end, you’ll be glad you did.

for common goals. Every wasted tax dollar, every politician focused only on keeping his job, every entitled civil servant, every incident of corruption erodes the credibility of government.

Any hope of regaining even a modicum of public trust starts with each level of government getting its fiscal house in order.

Thanks to decades of concerted effort, many people have bought into a set of diminished expectations about the role of government and, more troublingly, the possibilities of shaping a better society. We’ve had democracy reduced to the occasional trip to the polls.

We’ve seen government reduced to managerial functions, where debate is constrained to a few wellworn topics. We’ve seen the economy reduced to fiscal policy – deregulation’s the order of the day as the financial services industry sets the agenda.

We’ve seen citizenship dumbed down to passive observation, at best.

Fewer of us bother to vote, let alone take an interest in elections. Far fewer still look past the slogans and latest complaints. But if we’re going to have a better society we need to think about the future 10, 20, 50 and 100 years down the line. The road we’ve been on for the last three decades, driven by the neoconservative corporate agenda, has diminished our quality of life. We have to look past dubious vote-buying programs, immediate tax cuts and partisanship.

Where the likes of Trump and, yes, Ford, following in a long line of would-be and purported leaders, offers the cult-ofpersonality, maybe we’re now ready to look for leaders to shape a shared vision that’s good for the many.

In last week’s election, certainly a change was needed to do away the corruption, illegalities and disregard for the public, but we have yet to see the substance that’s emerged elsewhere. If it does, maybe we’ll be less skeptical of the change we got June 7.

Boat repairs make for a riveting experience OPEN COUNTRY

Linwood PS students take the classroom out on the links School program that introduces kids to golfing looks to expand after inaugural season VERONICA REINER Many a golfer would argue that a bad day on the links is better than a good day at the office. Recently, a group of local students have been discovering if that applies to school, as well.

On June 18, the Linwood Public School Golf Club will be wrapping up the first season of what organizers hope will become a tradition for many years to come.

The inspiration for the club of 20 students came from teacher and club organizer Jeff Pfohl’s previous experience.

“I did it when I was at another school in Waterloo, and another teacher organized it,” explained Pfohl.

“So I thought it was a great

idea and I thought we’d try doing it here in Linwood.”

Practices begin in the morning on Mondays and Thursdays starting at 7:15 a.m. until 8 a.m. at the Elmira Golf Club at 40 Eldale Rd. “The kids love it,” said Pfohl. “We had to cancel because of weather the one day, and they were actually quite upset at school about it. I took that as a good thing.

“What’s really great about it is you get to see the kids in a different light, and they get to see us in a different light,” he added.

“What’s really great is the golf pro who’s helping us is actually a supply teacher.

His name is Ryan Lawrence.”

Lawrence has been an elementary school supply

teacher with the Waterloo Region District School Board for the past eight years. He began golfing when he was just 12 years old. He is also an assistant professional at the Elmira Golf Club since 2013 and received his pro card in golf the same year. “[The kids] have seen him before and it helps make that connection that you otherwise wouldn’t have,” said Pfohl. “We all see each other in a different light. There’s lots of joking around, and they’re learning a lot so far. I can tell you that.”

No experience is necessary for students looking to sign up.

“The purpose of this program is to introduce the

game of golf in a fun-orientated setting where ability and experience level are secondary to learning and enjoyment,” said Lawrence.

It is available for any student in Grades 4 through 8. The experience includes six sessions over a threeweek period. Both organizers want to see the club continue.

“It would be awesome if it became a yearly program for the kids to look forward to,” said Lawrence.

The Elmira Golf Club offers a variety of other programs for just about anyone interested, including junior clinics, junior programs, private lessons, and group lessons for beginners and more advanced golfers.

The other day I was reminiscing with my brother about how we used to prepare for the fall duck season in the summer prior. We’d reload shells, rig decoys, build blinds and patch waders.

But the most important job would be to hammer the rivets tight on our uncle’s old tin boat. This is part of the duck hunting tradition that I think young people these days are missing out on. Frankly, I blame it on the invention of boats that don’t leak.

Back then, manufacturers figured that if they gave you a boat that didn’t leak in 99 per cent of the hull, you got good value for your money. I think they had some kind of deal with sledge hammer manufacturers.

So, every August or so, if you had a riveted tin boat, as every duck hunter did, you would hammer the rivets tight to ensure they didn’t leak.

Woolwich U17 boys and U16 girls each take top spots at Ancaster soccer tournament VERONICA REINER A weekend trip to the Hamilton area proved fruitful for the Woolwich U17 boys’ and U16 girls’ soccer teams, as both captured gold at the Ancaster Heritage Tournament, one of the largest one-weekend outdoor soccer tournaments in Canada.

“This tournament gathers one of the [largest] amounts of teams in the year during the weekend,” said Brandon Lowther, rep chair and technical director with Woolwich Youth Soccer. “That alone makes it a pretty tough competition over the course of that weekend.”

The teams played five games in the tournament, both finishing with a score of 1-0. The U16 girls conceded zero goals, and U17 boys only gave up one goal in the entire tournament, noted U16 girls’ coach Gerard Douglas.

Tak Shibayama is the coach for the U17 boys’ team for the past two years, with five years of overall coaching experience.

“Historically our team in this tournament, we’ve never won it, and we did this year,” said Shibayama.

“The other cool thing that happened is that we broke our shootout curse. Whenever a game is tied in these kinds of tournaments, we

never go into overtime; we go into shootouts. And when that happens, we usually lose. But for the first time, we were able to defeat that curse.”

Shibayama attributes the team’s success to their many years playing together and their chemistry on the field.

“We train hard and practice, we practice the basics over and over again,” he added. “To be honest, I’m just fortunate to be training a group of very talented players. These boys have been playing together for six or seven years. I just took over the team last year, so this is just my second year coaching with this group of people. I think the fact that they’ve been together for so long; they just have such good chemistry out on the field. They’re 17-year-old boys, and they have other hobbies, another life going on, so we try to keep this team pretty relaxed. So I think it’s mostly the chemistry and the will to play soccer makes them a winning team.”

All of the rep teams practice a minimum of twice a week. Each team chooses to go to different tournaments in varying amounts.

Their season has just begun in May, making this a nice way to kick it off.

We’re hosting the U13 girls’ tournament round in July which is a pretty big deal.”

The boys’ U13 and the girls’ U17 teams will be participating in the Ontario Cup this year.

“The U17 girls’ team are the defending champions of Ontario Cup,” added Lowther. “This year they’re

looking to try to get back to the winning round and because the winner at U17 goes to the national championships.”

There was also the Canada soccer festival for house league this past weekend, said Lowther. It took place across Elmira and St. Jacobs.

“We follow the Ontario Soccer Provincial Development Matrix for recreation so there’s a limitation on how much they can play in a day, and what size of fields they use, etcetera,” added Lowther. “And so

we follow that as well. At the club, we have claimed our bronze level club excellence from Ontario Soccer this past year. One of the requirements of keeping that bronze medal is following along in the development matrix, and so we do that.”

Anyone interested in playing soccer can do so through the Woolwich Youth Soccer Club.

“We will be opening registration for the fall adult league this week,” said Lowther. “It will be recreational, fun, co-ed,

all of the words that everybody wants to hear so hopefully they’ll come and play. Even if you don’t have any experience with soccer, it’s okay. We’ll still have fun.

“We will be starting that league the weekend after the long weekend in September. That one goes through right through the end of October – seven weeks. We skip the Thanksgiving weekend but otherwise, seven weeks is our programming. Sunday afternoons, 11-5, and just go out and have some fun.”

question was leaking.

A leak was found in one of two ways.

In the first method, the owner of the boat would take it out on a fishing trip and notice three to four drops of water on the bottom of the boat after eight hours on the lake, a duration which typically included one sun shower. Three or four drops was considered irrefutable proof that the

boat leaked and was in urgent need of maintenance.

Alternately, if there was a bit of water in the boat when it was launched and none by the time we returned to the boat launch, that was also proof of a leak. Bear in mind that when I was a kid evaporation was one of those theories we thought was created by eggheads just so they could use another multisyllable word.

The end result, in ei-

ther case, was a Saturday of hammering rivets tight.

First the boat was set overturned on two sawhorses. Then a crew of three was gathered.

The first was positioned under the boat with a 12-pound sledge. His job was to hold it tight against the internal head of the rivet that was going to be hammered. The second person was outside the boat with a two-pound sledge. His job was to ham-

mer the wrong rivet – or his thumb.

The third person, the owner of the boat, supervised the entire operation from the comfort of a reclining lawn chair a few feet away. He was the only one with ear protection and a beer.

Thinking back on those days, I couldn’t remember who was inside the boat so I asked my brother.

“Hey,” I said, “who was inside the boat when we hammered rivets?”

“What did you say?” he asked.

Believe me, being outside the boat wasn’t easy either. You see, the average 12-foot tin boat had somewhere in the neighbourhood of 3 million or so rivets.

The process went something like this.

“I’m going to hammer the first rivet from the prow on the keel!” the hammerer would say.

“What did you say?” the guy under the boat would

yell.

“Did you say ready?” the hammerer would ask.

“What did you say?”

“OK!” you’d reply.

ONGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! This would be followed by, “I’m going to hammer the second rivet from the prow on the keel!” And so it went for the rest of the afternoon.

Eventually 2,999,999 rivets would be hammered tight.

And all that hammering would loosen a rivet.

Local public school athletes put in strong showing at Waterloo county finals FAISAL ALI While the EDSS track and field team has been tearing it up this season, their younger counterparts at the elementary level picked up more than a few wins of their own at the county finals last week.

Competing in the regionwide track competition at Cambridge’s Jacob Hespeler Secondary School over the weekend, several of the township’s primary school students came through with a podium finish.

Amongst the many students to emerge with the gold, silver or bronze were several from the public schools in Wellesley, Conestogo, Breslau and Elmira’s Park Manor.

For the gold medalist in the U13 400-metre dash, Breslau PS student Chanithi Bandaranayake, win-

ning at the county’s was just one more step in the runner’s ambitions. The student moved prodigiously over the course of the season from her division through to place first in the regionals, which eventually led to her first-place finish at the county finals.

Moreover, last year, the Breslau runner competed at the 2017 Athletics Ontario Bantam Midget Youth Championships, and placed first in the 4x100-metre relay event.

Claiming a gold at the provincials, Bandaranayake has now set her sights even higher on qualifying for the nationals.

“We got gold in that at provincials,” she explained. “But for nationals, you can’t go unless you qualify.”

300-metre solo run at nationals, which requires her to run a best of 43.50 seconds. Whether she’ll be able to achieve that number, Bandaranayake admits she hasn’t attempted it.

“I’m not really sure, we haven’t run one yet,” she says. “My 200-(metre) is around 27 seconds.”

Whether the young athlete will qualify for the nationals will be determined in the coming weeks.

“I would like to go to nationals and maybe win a medal there, but I don’t know,” she said.

Bandaranayake will be heading to high school next year, and says she is definitely committed to her athleticism on the track field.

“I’m so proud of her,” added her mother Chathurika Tennakoon. “I thought that she deserved

it. She practices a lot ... and I want to see that she goes to nationals.”

From Wellesley PS, Mia Thompson took home the silver in the girls’ 800-metre 12-year-olds. From Conestogo, Abby Byers placed first in the 13-year-old 200-metre dash and long jump; Chris Melvin won the U12 boys’ triple jump; and Thomas Martinez claimed the U14 boys shot put.

Out of Park Manor were gold-medalists Haylee Clemmer and Jamie Crawford; silver-medalists Morgan Fleet, Liam Eveleigh; and bronze winners Kieran Stewart and Jamie Crawford again. Getting down to the business of going local with food choices A Taste of Woolwich helps food producers bridge the gap between farm and urbanites FAISAL ALI Long supporting the region’s local food producers, the Taste of Woolwich is back for its 12th year next weekend. With a number of attractions, demonstrations and fresh produce on offer, the event aims to connect farmers in the region with their local markets.

It’s a tradition that has helped to raise the profile of local producers amongst residents, giving them a taste of the thriving agricultural practice available right in their own backyards.

“It started out because we were trying to get people interested in the farmers, and [for] the farmers to demonstrate their wares,” explains Vivi Mervyn, chairperson for this year’s Taste of Woolwich. “We wanted local people to eat local foods.”

And it seems that many people have been doing just that. According to the last agriculture census in 2016, over a quarter of farms in the townships of Woolwich and Wellesley reported selling their produce to visitors at the farm gate. That’s far more farmers than the provincial average of 15 per cent who sold at the gate.

Of course, to buy farm gate and support the local economy, residents have to know where to look. Fortunately, helping to generate that awareness of the local options is the organization

Even secondary attractions on offer, from “pick-your-own” farms, where visitors hand pick the fruits and vegetables they wish to take home, to corn mazes and pumpkin patches are listed. It’s an

invaluable little tool that helps to put the township’s farm gate businesses, quite literally, on the map.

“That’s really the mission of Foodlink, of making those connections between everyone from the food producers to the farmers to the processors, retailers, right on through to the consumer. The whole gamut, all the links in the food chain,” says Anna Contini, project coordinator at Foodlink.

Buy Local! food map will be available at the Taste of Woolwich event, though impatient foodies can already find copies at the local township office, amongst other locations.

However, it would be well worth a visit to a Taste of Woolwich to pick up a map, if only to enjoy the educational and entertaining fare on offer. Each year brings something new to Taste of Woolwich, and this year’s event is no exception.

Vanessa DeBoer, an Alma-based dairy farmer, will be leading event-goers on a retrospective journey of her practice. She grew up on a dairy farm and has seen the changes over the years, and it’s her own personal experience with those changes that she hopes to bring to her narrative.

“I’m going to talk about my own experiences being raised on a dairy farm. I love it, I’ve got a huge passion for it and for farmers in general, but I’m going to be talking a lot about dairy farming in particular,” she says.

Food waste has become the poster child for inefficiency in agri-food. But how much are farmers contributing to the problem … or to the solution?

That’s what a study led by Second Harvest and Value Chain Management International (VCMI) is trying to find out, in what they say is the world’s first comprehensive look at food loss and waste from primary producers to consumers.

They’re hoping 250 farmers from across Canada, and all commodities, will take part in the project survey, which closes June 22.

The project is funded by the Walmart Foundation.

It will encompass Canada’s farming, food and beverage industry, including fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, grains and oilseeds, sugars and syrups, beverages and seafood.

It’s designed to establish a framework and metrics that businesses operating in the farming, processing, retail and food service sectors can use to understand where losses are likely to occur.

improve performance and profitability, by reducing losses and waste.

The research team will collect data for an accurate estimate of food loss waste occurring at discrete points along the value chain, then evaluate the impact of its root causes.

They will also develop solutions to reduce the percentage of Canadian food sent to landfill, by having improved redistribution, re-

use and recycling practices.

Consumers have taken the brunt of the blame for food waste. About 47 per cent of food waste (by value) is said to come from the kitchen. Previous research by VCMI pegged contributions from farming at around 10 per cent of the total, $3.1 billion.

Now, they want to nail it down tighter.

“The associated costs of food loss and waste include energy, labour, packag-

ing and water, costs which never appear in isolation,” says VCMI’s Martin Gooch.

“The extent to which businesses – including farms – can benefit financially from reducing food loss and waste can be significant.”

To gather integral data for this project, VCMI has developed an online survey, for farmers and other members along the value chain to complete www.surveymonkey.com/r/FoodLossSurvey2018

Gooch says the project could lead to farmers gaining greater recognition for the crucial role that they play in ensuring the safe environmentally sustainable production of food.

Farmers could also benefit from the research enabling them to capture greater value from their crops and livestock from the creation of new markets, reducing input costs, or reducing losses by improving quality or customer

relationships.

Further, he says, the project could also lead to a greater proportion of inedible food being incorporated into animal feed or transformed into fertilizer rather than going to landfill.

Industry engagement is occurring in two forms. The first series of industry engagement activities will be held during June and July.

They’ll be concise sessions, focused on testing the accuracy of data gathered to that

point, along with the validity of assumptions drawn from the initial analysis.

“I’m going to talk about how my family emigrated over from the Netherlands in the late ’70s, early ’80s, and then just how farming has changed and progressed.”

For DeBoer, events like Taste of Woolwich are an important way for farmers to bridge the large gap between urban and agricultural communities.

At a time when people are especially wary of what they consume, connecting farmers with their consumers has never been more necessary.

“So how do we cre-

ate that relationship, that open relationship ... [where] everybody can know exactly what’s going on on a farm, and where their food actually comes from? Because we all have to eat!” she says.

“Events like this are a great way to make those connections happen, and in turn remind everybody that we need each other.”

The Taste of Woolwich is being held on June 23 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Elmira Farmers’ Market, in the parking lot off Maple Street behind the Woolwich administration building.

Coming from a family of dairy farmers, DeBoer has seen the changes in her line of work first hand over the years.

A world of music now comes with a street full of food Our World Festival of Music partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters’ King StrEATery for family fun on Saturday STEVE KANNON Like the fortuitous Reese’s combo of chocolate and peanut butter, the sounds of the Our World Festival of Music will be joined by the food trucks of the King StrEATery for a Saturday of family-friendly events at the civic square outside of Kitchener city hall.

The partnership between Our World, now in its 13th year, and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Waterloo Region will see the festival’s usual evening assortment of live music start earlier in the afternoon in conjunction with the agency’s food trucks and kids’ activities.

“As a charitable organization, I’m always looking for opportunities to partner with other non-profit community groups. This is a really good fit,” says artistic director Lawrence McNaught of the joint venture.

“It’s a full day of live music. On our end, we’ll be running all kinds of children’s events,” adds Mallory Boyer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Waterloo Region.

Headlined by JunoAward winner QuiQue Escamilla, the free slate of live music gets underway at 3:30, a half-day earlier than the usual kickoff time for Our World. The focus on local and national acts remains, however, McNaught notes.

notes McNaught. “And, funnily enough, one of the group’s contacted by the King StrEATery folks was also here last year, Safe As Houses, who were definitely fan favourites.”

On McNaught’s radar for a few years now, a local favourite, Juneyt, will take

Known for his passionate playing, Juneyt is a 2017 Toronto Independent Music Awards winner.

A native of the southern state of Chiapas, Mexico, QuiQue Escamilla is also making his first appearance at the festival. Now Toronto-based, Escamilla is a multi-instrumental singersongwriter described as a “modern-day troubadour.”

“I’ve been talking with QuiQue for a couple of years now. He’s been interested in playing Our World, but the schedules just didn’t work ... until now,” notes McNaught. “He’s a Juno-award winner with a great little band.

“It’s a good, fun line-up.”

In the countdown to Saturday, both McNaught and Boyer are keeping a close eye on the weather forecast, which looked good

as of midweek. Summery weather is just what the doctor ordered for an outdoor event.

The two also see a good fit for an ongoing partnership.

For Big Brothers Big Sisters of Waterloo Region, it’s a chance to expand the King StrEATery event, part of its efforts to do more with the community since moving to a downtown Kitchener location in 2016.

“Since being here, we’ve had an opportunity to work with the downtown businesses and the community,” says Boyer. “Everybody’s been so welcoming – there’s a real sense of community.”

For the King StrEATery portion, the organization is expecting 14 food trucks offering a variety of fare, from the traditional hotdogs and ice cream to pizza, jerk chicken and vegan food.

“We really have a whole array of foods.”

The joint Our World Festival of Music and King StrEATery activities run from 3:30 to 11 p.m. on Saturday (June 16) out front of Kitchener city hall, where King Street will be closed off to traffic.

Originally from Mexico and now based in Toronto, QuiQue Escamilla headlines the Our World Festival of Music, taking to the stage to cap the day’s festivities with his soulful troubadour style. He’s scheduled to appear at 10 p.m.

Hicknell, David

Foerster, Floyd (“Mike”)

Passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at the age of 65.

He was a self-made man who started in construction after graduating from Grand River Collegiate Institute in 1970. He later studied to earn his CET while working as a technician for Gamsby and Mannerow Consulting Civil Engineers. Using his charisma, drive and business savvy, he worked his way up to become President of the firm and eventually CEO of GM BluePlan Engineering.

His passions over the years included motorcycling, boating, collecting music and traveling. He was a devoted family man, a role model to many and like a brother to his closest friends.

He faced life’s challenges with tenacity, optimism and integrity. He made laughter and fun a priority. He chased his dreams and caught them. Words truly fail to describe what a great man he was and how very much “Super Dave” will be missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Sandra Hicknell, his children Shane (Natalie) Hicknell and Jodie Hicknell, and was the best papa ever to his grandchildren Benjamin, Allison, Charlie, Eloise and Helena. He was the beloved son of Josephine (Karl) Snider, the dear brother of Jim (Joyce) Hicknell, Jane Dale, Marianne (Jim) Hillier and Joe (Danielle) Hicknell, and a special uncle of and father figure to Ken Hicknell and Deb (Paul) Hicknell. He will be sadly missed by his in-laws in Owen Sound, the rest of his extended family and his many close friends.

He was predeceased by his father Joe Hicknell, daughter Kelly Hicknell and brother Pat Hicknell.

A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday June 24, 2018 from 1pm-4pm at Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre (1001 Ottawa St. S., Kitchener).

Mike passed away peacefully with family by his side on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at Barnswallow Place in Elmira at the age of 91. He was born August 13, 1926 and was the son of the late Martha (Cassel) and Albert Foerster.

Loving husband of Marion Foerster (nee Ross) for almost 65 years.

Dear father of Debbie (Robert) Reiner, Julie (Brian) Heckendorn, Shelley (Mark) Erb and Carrie Foerster (Mark Israel).

Grandfather to Jenna Reiner (Justin), Geoff Reiner(Steph), Amy Forwell (Derrick), Michael Heckendorn (Stacey), Kim Erb (Iain), Stephanie Gunn (Ben), Katelyn Israel and Abbey Israel.

Also survived by his 12 great-grandchildren.

Predeceased by his siblings, Joe, Howard and Evelyn (Bert Black).

Mike was born, raised and was a life long resident in Elmira. He owned and operated Mike’s Auto Body in Elmira for many years. Mike played for the Elmira Polar Kings and was always a hockey enthusiast. Mike was also an avid solo card player. He belonged to the Elmira Men’s Bowling League, Elmira Curling Club and was a member of town council. In his retirement, he enjoyed following his race horses to the track. He enjoyed many years at their family cottage on Belwood Lake where many good times were enjoyed by all his family and friends.

A private family celebration of Mike’s life will take place.

Loved Papa of Carter and Austin Robinson. Brother of Geraldine Peltz, Leonard (Jean) Martin, Yvonne (Richard) Disano, and Howard (Marion) Martin.

Remembered by Barbara’s siblings Kerry (Kelly) Gilchrist, and Todd (Bev) Gilchrist. Predeceased by a daughter in infancy, his parents Walter and Delphine (Kavelman) Martin, brotherin-law Murray Peltz, nephew Greg Peltz, and sister-in-law Donna (John) Gillan. Fred was an electrical contractor, as owner of F.M. Electric, served as a board member of ECACO and was a 50 year member of IBEW Local 804.

He was a member of Gale Presbyterian Church, Elmira, and formerly a member of the Elmira Lions Club. Memorial visitation will be held from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Gale Presbyterian Church, 10 Barnswallow Drive, Elmira, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. Cremation has taken place. On a quest for a substitute for a day filled with students A longtime teacher at Elmira’s Park Manor PS, Ted Frey set to retire after 30 years in the classroom VERONICA REINER Ted Frey is a multitalented music, drama and math teacher at Park Manor Public School in Elmira. He will be retiring this month with mixed feelings about wrapping up his 30-year career.

“I would say he’s been a fixture here,” said Shirley McHolm, principal at Park Manor PS. “He’s been teaching here for decades.

He’s been in charge of about 17 different musicals or play productions for the school over the years. He’s certainly been an anchor to our building, for sure.”

Frey has witnessed various changes to the educational system, with his own teaching style evolving over the years, too, he notes.

“When I started, I was very much concerned about the subject,” he said.

“The longer I worked, I think it shifted to more and more the students and the learners. And those relationships – it’s rewarding to see them learn. The light in their eyes when they understand something or feel an accomplishment, I think that’s the most important part of teaching. That’s what I meant when I said I finally got it right. That is something I’ll miss; it’s something truly special.”

There has also been a drastic shift in the use of technology since he

“This really sounds hokey, but when I first started there were Gestetner copiers,” explained Frey. “Those are the things you had to make a master and crank it through an ink machine. There might still be some in the school. Photocopiers were just a new thing. So the technology

has certainly changed over the years.”

Frey also saw the first inclusion of personal computers in schools.

“They were very crude, very primitive, and they ended up taking more time than they saved,” he said.

“I think we’ve passed that point; they’re to an advantage now. Initially, it was

like, ‘you might as well get out a pencil and paper because they’re so slow.’”

He believes that the advancement of technology, with devices such as smart phones and iPads, is both a blessing and a curse.

“The ability to be constantly connected and the addiction to being constantly connected is

a real problem for everyone,” he explained. “Not just the students, but for the adults as well. Even if you put the cell phone in the desk, in the locker, or on top of the desk and it’s turned off, and you give everyone the same exam.

With control groups and everything. And the closer you are in proximity to your cell phone, the poorer you perform on your test.

So even if it’s turned off, it’s still such a large part of our consciousness and we’re devoting so much of our energy trying to ignore it that we can’t do as well as we’re capable of. I think that goes for adults, that goes for all of us.”

His retirement plans include wilderness hiking, river trips, woodworking, and horseback riding lessons. While he’s excited to have more time for a range of hobbies, the routine is something he’ll miss.

“As much as I hate the structure, you know how you say you hate getting up in the morning,” he said.

“But I’d come to school and if I wasn’t happy, within seconds of seeing the kids or having someone say hello to you in the morning, I’m happy. And that takes you through the rest of the day. That’s something that I’m going to have to find a substitute for. As much as the teacher’s supposed to be the one motivating the students, it goes the other way as well.”

Grilled Chicken Breast & Asparagus Salad 4 chicken breasts 3 Tbsp. grainy mustard 2 Tbsp. local honey 1 tsp. puréed garlic 1 tsp. grated ginger 3 sprigs of thyme 1 Tbsp. chopped parsley Salad ingredients: 1 bunch asparagus, blanched 2 Tbsp. olive oil Sliced cremini mushrooms

1/4 cup sliced red onion 10 sliced cherry tomato Salt and pepper to taste 2 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar 3 Tbsp. Boursin cheese

Place chicken in a bowl.

Put ingredients with chicken and toss together.

Place on a preheated barbecue with one side on medium and the other side off. Place chicken on the off side of the grill, allowing it to bake in the barbecue under indirect heat at 165 F for about 20-25 minutes, depending how large the chicken breasts are.

In a hot pan, add oil and then sliced mushrooms – if the oil dries up add a bit more. Sauté until golden.

Add red onion, toss un-

til the onion wilts.

Add cherry tomato and cooked asparagus.

Deglaze with vinegar and season with salt and pepper.

Once chicken has cooked through allow to rest for 5 minutes. Slice on a slight angle and fan on the plate. Top chicken with asparagus salad.

Drizzle with olive oil and crumbled Boursin.
