WHITNEY NEILSON Former Woolwich councillor and Elmira realtor Allan Poffenroth has died as a result of injuries from a three-vehicle collision east of Allan Poffenroth Palmerston on Wednesday. He was 68.

The crash happened at the intersection of Wellington County Rd. 8 and Wellington County Rd. 9 in Mapleton Township around 2:42 p.m. on August 19.

Poffenroth was the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle. He was transported by Guelph-Wellington Emergency Medical Services to a local hospital then airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital, where he succumbed POFFENROTH | 2

An auditor’s report raises so many questions about Scott Hahn’s election expenses that some follow-up action appears necessary, says the Elmira resident who challenged the spending report filed by Scott Hahn the Woolwich councillor.

But Dan Holt said he has no clear indication of what the Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committee (MECAC) will do with information in the audit released earlier this month.

“It’s a 50/50 toss-up ... how they’ll handle it,” he said in advance of next week’s MECAC meeting.

Holt added he hasn’t decided what he’ll do if the committee opts not to refer the case to a prosecutor, though he does have the ability to launch a legal challenge.

“I’m just going to wait and see what happens,” he said in an interview Tuesday.

MECAC meets August 27 to review the findings of the audit it ordered. Members can either decide to end the review process there or send the findings on for legal action against Hahn.

The audit prepared by Froese Forensic Partners painted the Ward 1 councillor in an unfavourable light, finding he contravened the Municipal Elections Act. There was a lack of proper paperwork in relation to campaign signs and brochures prepared by Hahn’s family members. Specifically, there may have been issues with contributions

A man in a tractor-trailer was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries, and the driver of the third vehicle was not injured, according to Wellington County OPP. Poffenroth served one four-year term as councillor for Ward 1 in Woolwich township from 2010-2014.

He ran again last year, but

was not re-elected. He was the longtime owner of Coach House Realty with business partner Paul Robb. He was the owner and landlord of a variety of Elmira properties.

Tom Hendrick, one of the founding members of the Elmira Kiwanis Club, says Poffenroth will be remembered for his community work.

“He was a Kiwanis member for over 20 years. His major goal was tree planting in the town of Elmira.

up for at least the last five years. He was in the music festival and in fact he headed that up for at least five years or longer,” Hendrick said.

Poffenroth brought the idea of a tree-planting project to the Elmira Kiwanis Club in 2010. Since then the club has planted trees every spring and fall.

“He grew up in Elmira and he was a communityminded spirit. He was always looking to make Elmira a better place,” Hendrick said.

A declining Canadian dollar and uncertain oil industry are leaving some Canadian business owners concerned, according to a new survey by the Greater Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber surveyed its membership and found 66 per cent are concerned or very concerned about the Canadian economy, and 21 per cent are connected to the weakened Alberta oil industry, as outlined in the August 13 report.

Vice-president of advocacy Art Sinclair says it’s clear there’s a lot of economic uncertainty, not just here, but across the country.

“I think really what’s happening here, not just in Waterloo Region, but in southern Ontario is the end of last year, first of this year, when the dollar started dropping, I think people thought it would be good news in terms of opening up those export markets that we used to have about a decade ago when we had the low Canadian dollar. Particularly for the manufacturing sector, we’ve always been highly dependent on the U.S. market and it is more attractive when the dollar drops,” Sinclair said.

Sinclair notes the region is still in pretty solid shape, with unemployment levels fluctuating between one and two percentage points below the provincial or national average.

vey was to determine what the issues are for local businesses as we enter into the federal election campaign. Of the respondents, 30 per cent identified infrastructure as their main concern in this election.

“Obviously infrastructure’s been identified as a priority and I think if we dug down further, it’s just not local infrastructure,” Sinclair said. “Moving around Waterloo Region, but particularly for a lot of people that are exporting, whether you’re going into the United States or anywhere else, you have to be able to move your product.

The manufacturing sector of course is still very much on the just in time system, where the parts are moving into the assembly plant with a very short time frame.”

The big challenge is and has always been moving products along the 401 corridor, he explained. Some businesses also expressed concern about delays at the border due to the volume of traffic trying to get across.

After reading reports from Bay Street economists, Sinclair says the general consensus is that the southern Ontario manufacturing economy will pick back up, but it’s been slow so far.

“I guess one of the big reasons is because there isn’t that much capacity left. In the last 10 years because of the higher Canadian dollar and a lot of companies moving offshore, we had to get that capacity back, in other words more facilities to

pick up that volume of export into the United States.

It’s been a slow transition,” Sinclair said.

He thinks Ontario is starting to stabilize now, after having economic issues going back to the start of the recession in 2008.

The small business sector continues to drive job growth in the region and also across the country.

“I think we’re seeing pretty stable growth in the small business sector and I think we’re retaining a lot of that employment as well,” Sinclair said. “It’s the high tech sector that’s driving a lot of this because they’re doing what I think governments and universities and people that analyze economic trends have been advising for years, and that’s where we’re focusing our efforts and the high tech sector, the knowledge sectors.”

He notes these sectors aren’t just developing software. In a lot of cases they’re applying technology to manufacturing, for example to healthcare. He says healthcare will be a challenge as the region’s population is expected to continue to grow. The expansion at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital should help with that.

Investments like that are the type of social infrastructure that are going to be key in this election he says, along with traditional infrastructure of roads and bridges.

“Governments have to make that investment in infrastructure and I think ECONOMY | 26

Kids quickly groomed for the stage Singer’s Theatre participants get a lesson in putting on a show, with this year’s production tackling a weighty issue WHITNEY NEILSON Walking into The Singer’s Theatre in Kitchener, it’s hard to believe The Boys in the Photograph cast were only two days into rehearsal.

A chorus of 31 singers echoed throughout the building as they finished blocking their scenes before lunch. It’s the 13th year for the summer intensive musical theatre workshop run, where students have 10 days to learn a full musical before putting on four performances.

Director and former EDSS drama teacher, Gord Davis says it took some time to decide on The Boys in the Photograph as this year’s show.

“We always like to choose something that’s really challenging for the kids,” Davis said. “We looked at several different ones, then particularly when Amanda (Brunk) listened to the music she loved the music. I saw the production of it in Toronto a couple years ago and when I saw it I thought this would be a perfect one for us to do, because of its challenge and challenging subject matter too. It’s the

whole Protestant-Catholic conflict in Ireland in 1969, basically when it was at its peak.”

With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and the book and lyrics by Ben Elton, we enter the world of a boys’ catholic soccer team who have made it to the finals.

Their star player might be good enough to make a team in England and become a professional soccer player. But as luck would have it, he gets involved with the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and winds up in prison. The story follows the effects on all the people connected to him.

“Theatrically, characterwise, I think the challenge is that inbred hatred that the Irish had for the opposite religion because I think most people nowadays have grown far away from that. I think that’s kind of an eye opener for these kids, is that as soon as a child is born they’re told to hate this other group of people,” Davis said.

Davis explains there’s a line in the show that says ‘no child is born to hate,’ and that’s the message of the show, that no one is born to hate and yet the

Northern Irish conflict happened.

Founder and artistic director of Singer’s Theatre Amanda Brunk says the musical challenges come in the rock style of much of the play’s music.

“It’s very ’80s in style.

That’s challenging for trained singers because they’re all trained and we’ve got to kind of get them rougher, but still maintain their technique and all their healthy habits,” Brunk said.

She added, “It’s hard for the boys. The boys have to sing really high. For teenage boys that’s not easy.”

The cast is made up of motivated performers aged 14-24 from KitchenerWaterloo, Guelph, Elmira, Woodstock, Saint John, and Vancouver Island.

Two girls from Vancouver Island are back for their third year. They met Brunk when she was out West adjudicating a Kiwanis Music Festival.

High school teachers reach tentative deal with province SCOTT BARBER With just weeks remaining before the new school year is set to begin, the union representing Ontario’s 60,000 public secondary school teachers has become the first organization to strike a tentative deal with the province.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) announced early Thursday morning that it had come to terms on a new deal, just two days after returning to the bargaining table.

Contracts expired with

all of the major teachers unions last August, resulting in work-to-rule tactics and even strikes in a number of local school boards across the province.

The union representing English Catholic elementary school teachers joined the fray earlier this month, threatening job actions if a deal isn’t reached before the new school year begins on September 8.

But it has been a slow process all-around, with the Liberal government promising to reject any wage increase until it’s able to eliminate the budget

deficit, expected to reach $11.9 billion this year.

“Negotiations were challenging for all sides, but it speaks to the dedication and commitment of everyone involved that collaboration prevailed and a tentative agreement was reached,” Education Minister Liz Sandals said Thursday morning. “The tentative agreement must now be ratified and details of the agreement will not be shared until that time.”

Now, the province will look to ink deals with public and Catholic elementary school teachers.

Speaking to reporters last week, Premier Kathleen Wynne said she was more “optimistic now than I was a few weeks ago (about a teacher settlement), but it is obviously going to be a hard few weeks as we work to make sure that kids are in school. It is my number one priority as we go into the fall.”

Members of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) met in Toronto this week to elect a new executive. Sam Hammond remains as president, with Nathan Core and Greg Weiler serving as members

from Waterloo Region.

Last spring, Weiler told The Observer the union is not looking for a pay hike.

But that assertion was contradicted by a statement from the Ontario Public School Boards Association, which went public in June with the teachers’ demands of a nine per cent raise over the first three years of a new deal.

Details of the tentative contract between the province and the OSSTF have not been made public, and the deal is subject to ratification by union members.

The ETFO announced

Thursday its members would begin a “phase 2” work-to-rule strike action on the first work day of the 2015-2016 school year.

While teachers will remain in class and participate in extracurricular activities, they will not participate in field trips, collect monies for school-related activities or participate in fundraising activities, collect or distribute to students any paperwork required by the school or school board or take part in parent-teacher interviews outside of school hours, among other measures.

Menno Homes project gets $1.7M

approved projects will go to: Kitchener Housing Inc., YWCA of KitchenerWaterloo, Elmira Development Support Corporation, MennoHomes Inc., Heartwood Place, Supportive Housing of Waterloo, and Home Concept Property Management.

The MennoHomes project is slated for the corner of Church Street and Memorial Avenue, a site shared with Woolwich Community Services.

MennoHomes will receive $1.7 million from Waterloo Region to help fund a 25-unit apartment building in Elmira.

The organization is expected to launch a public campaign this fall to raise money for the affordable housing project. Construction is scheduled to begin next spring.

Raising dough is a daily occurrence for Grainharvest Breadhouse, but it takes on different meaning for

KidAbility, an organization that works with children and youth with a wide range of complex special needs.

Grainharvest Breadhouse owners Hubert Wurm, Roland Berchtold and David Nötzold have opted to donate 10 cents from every pretzel sold to KidAbility, generating more than $10,000 thus far.

“We wanted to support a good cause, so we started to look at local charities,” explains Wurm. “We were familiar with KidsAbility and felt we could help their children.”

Nötzold liked the fact that the majority of the money donated to KidsAbility went to the kids. “It was important to us that most of our donation would go

to the cause and not to administration and fundraising costs.”

Sun sets on solar project at Home

A rooftop solar project approved earlier this summer by Woolwich council is done before the sun even rose on it. Sky Solar Group pulled the plug this week over reservations from the purported site of the six-megawatt venture, Home Hardware’s St. Jacobs headquarters.

The local company said it had only had discussions with Sky Solar and had not committed to the project, yet the Hong Kong-based company had gone

ahead with organizing and advertising a public meeting, along with approaching township council in June.

$45,000 for Weigel drain plan Much of Elmira being in a floodplain, the underground drainage system is a key component in keeping it dry.

In developing a new master plan for the Weigel drain, Woolwich council last week agreed to a contract for engineering services with MMM Group for $45,000.

The Weigel drain watershed is approximately 260 hectares and includes rural and urban (industrial, residential,

commercial) lands. The headwaters originate approximately 570 metres west of Floradale Road and encompass a swath of land approximately 800 metres wide along either side of Church Street West.

There is some 144 to 160 hectares of land that drains to a constructed online stormwater management facility located at the end of Norman Avenue and south of Weigel Avenue. The remaining 100 hectares of the watershed includes the northeast portion of Elmira from just north of First Street East to just north of William Street where stormwater runoff is collected and conveyed by a series of closed pipe networks, culverts and open channel systems.

8:30 AM | A Waterloo Regional Police officer observed a motor vehicle driving erratically near King Street and Sawmill Road in St. Jacobs. The officer attempted to stop vehicle, but it sped off at high speed. The driver was later identified, with a 36-year-old Elmira man now facing criminal charges of ‘dangerous driving’ and ‘flight from police.’

8:00 PM | Two SUVs collided at Second Street and Snyder Avenue in Elmira. A 17-year-old girl from St. Jacobs driving a grey Toyota failed to stop for a stop sign while travelling eastbound on Snyder Avenue and collided with a blue Ford driven by a 33-year-old Elmira woman and travelling north on Second Street.

There were no injuries and the St. Jacobs resident was charged with disobeying the stop sign.

FINDING NEW MIDDLE GROUND Middle-ear infection (otitis media) is the most common bacterial infection among children as well as a leading cause of conductive hearing loss that can delay speech and language development. Because these infections cause so much pain and discomfort, parents are often only too willing to grasp at treatments. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Ontario this week issued a public notice with respect to fraudulent telephone calls.

The RCMP is warning of fraudulent telephone calls in which the caller identifies themselves as an RCMP officer calling to collect fines or income taxes or a variety of other scam tactics. The callers inform the victims must pay immediately or will be arrested within 24 hours.

In most cases, the number for RCMP appears on the victim’s call display.

1:20 PM | Members of the Wellington County OPP and fire services from Drayton, Moorefield, Minto, Palmerston and Milverton responded to a report of a large barn fire located on Wellington Road 10 in Mapleton Township. When emergency crews arrived, they found the barn, which housed approximately 100 young cows, was fully engulfed in flames. The fire was contained when the barn collapsed. All the cows perished in the fire. No other injuries reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.

7:00 PM | The Wellington County OPP received a report of a break and enter at a Mapleton Township address that occurred sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Unknown suspects entered the residence through an unlocked main floor window. Rooms were rummaged through however nothing appears to have been taken. 3:13 PM | Wellington County OPP received a report about a theft of an outboard boat motor that was

stolen sometime August 3-5. It was taken off a boat stored at Highland Pines Campground in Belwood and is described as a 2011 Mercury 25 horsepower, black and dark blue in colour. 7:00 PM | Passengers of a pickup truck were seen by a witness throwing two fountain drink cups that struck the side of a horse-drawn buggy. The incident happened in the westbound lane of Line 86 near Northfield Drive, east of Elmira. The incident went viral when one of the witnesses placed the event, complete with photos, on Facebook. Police fielded a slew of calls from outraged citizens.

Police ensured callers they were taking the incident quite seriously and that an investigation was underway. Regional Police located the registered owner of the motor vehicle involved. Investigation revealed that the occupants of the motor vehicle and the occupants of the buggy were known to each other and the intentions of the cup throwing was meant as a “joke.”

The investigation is ongoing and charges of ‘littering’ under the Highway Traffic Act are pending.

The committee had ordered the audit following a hearing in May, noting both Hahn’s initial filing and amended statement of expenses left many questions unanswered.

It was the low total of $258.40 originally filed

by Hahn that drew an application for an audit from Holt, a candidate in the Ward 1 election last fall. Hahn’s revised statement of $3,072.66 showed expenses paid by the TriMach Group. The cost of signs printed for $1,751.50

was then billed in equal thirds to Hahn’s father, mother and sister. As well, brochures and flyers were printed at a cost of $962.76, split evenly between his father-in-law and sister-inlaw.

Split like that, no one person contributed more than the legal maximum of $750 to his campaign. But the auditors found no paper trail to back that assertion.

Like Holt, Hahn said he doesn’t know what next week’s meeting will bring.

While admitting he contravened the act, he said he has subsequently provided all the information

he could.

“I admitted to that at the first meeting,” he said in an email of the contravention.

“I also hope MECAC doesn’t take any further action, but I have no idea what to expect.”

If the case goes to a prosecutor, Hahn could face a fine of up to $25,000, six months in jail or forfeiture of his council seat under the Municipal Elections Act rules.

Holt said the maximum fine or jail time aren’t appropriate, but the process should show there are consequences to not following the rules.

He also chafes at suggestions his challenge of Hahn’s expenses have been a waste of money. There are rules for a reason, and they have to be enforced, he argued.

“I did not do this because of sour grapes. There should be consequences.

“People blame me for so-called wasting taxpayers’ money, but you might as well say the police shouldn’t go out and arrest criminals because the judicial system is a waste of taxpayers’ money,” he said. “I don’t agree with people who say it’s a waste of money.”

Harper’s denial in Duffy scandal no longer plausible IN YET ANOTHER PARALLEL to the Nixon administration, Stephen Harper and the boys in short pants appear to be sinking into a mire of dirty politics, tampering and cover-ups.

Like the Watergate break-in, the Mike Duffy payout is simply a catalyst for looking behind the curtain at the sordid goings-on.

In a trial that’s been more about shining a light on the grubby power-mongering in the PMO than Duffy’s misdeeds, the testimony of former chief of staff Nigel Wright has been illuminating. The scandal hit new heights this week with revelations that other senior advisors were in on Wright’s plans to give the putative senator from PEI $90,000 to repay dubious expenses. The information made it even less plausible that Harper knew nothing of the payouts, attempts to pressure the Senate and influence an audit of expenses.

Of course, only the most partisan of Conservative supporters – see the viral video of one such person’s take of the Duffy scandal for an example of same – still believes Harper is in the clear on this one. Never has so much monkeying and micromanagement been on display in the PM’s chair, yet we’re supposed to believe that everyone but Harper knew about the attempts to bury the Duffy story? The deniability just isn’t plausible, not from a prime minister that has stuck his nose into every file as a partisan exercise in control.

From muzzling scientists to screening attendees of public events with some kind of loyalty test, Harper has repeatedly attempted to hide the truth from Canadians, wanting only his message to get out. Yet on such a major public relations issue with criminal implications, he knew not a thing? Credulity is stretched.

Now, such shenanigans come as no surprise to anyone who’s been keeping score of the Harper government’s malfeasance.

Calling Harper and his party ethically challenged would be an understatement. Critics have been pointing out examples of unethical behaviour for years. Conservative supporters have been sweeping them under a rug for just as long. Now, there’s so much blood in the water not even the most partisan Tories can ignore the reality of the situation.

Observers have been diligent in keeping lists of the governments lies, misdeeds, misdemeanors and crimes.

There’s Duffy and Wright, a pair of scandals all by themselves. And Pamela Wallin, another of Harper’s appointments to the Senate, a list that also includes Patrick Brazeau. On the robocall front, a court decision pointed the finger at some questionable activities, while not going all the way due to the limited scope of the case.

The Conservatives would rather you pay only cursory attention. Not at all if you’re inclined to vote for other parties. That’s why they hope there’s no traction for the issue of ethics, as they’ve got plenty to hide on that front, from the in-and-out financing scandal (charges pending?) to Bev Oda (one of several examples of falsified documents) and the first-ever contempt of Parliament charge. And let’s not forget the long list of dubious characters and associates such as Bruce Carson and Sebastien Togneri.

Nor the disgraceful conduct of Dean Del Mastro, Paul Calandra, Pierre Polievre and Peter Penashue, among others.

Given the history, we’re no longer inclined to give Harper the benefit of the doubt. There’s smoke, and we’re sure there’s fire.

With The Donald likely to implode in the Republican race, there’s a certain allure to drafting him into Woolwich’s tumultuous political situation.

Brazil’s Dilma Rousseff and the Peter Principle WORLD AFFAIRS Protesters thronged Brazil’s cities on Sunday demanding the impeachment of Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff, narrowly elected to a second term just last October, but not one of them made any reference to the Peter Principle. But if Rousseff were a senior manager in any bureaucracy, public or private, it would surely have been noticed by now that she has been promoted to her “level of incompetence.”

We owe the insight that “managers rise to the level of their incompetence” to Dr Laurence J Peter, who pointed out half a century ago that people are promoted on the basis of their success in their last job, not their aptitude for the next one. Eventually, inevitably, they are promoted into a job they are not equipped to do well. Even if they are not your conventional kind of manager.

Dilma Rousseff was a success as a left-wing guer-

rilla fighting Brazil’s military regime in the 1980s: captured and tortured for three days, she never said a word. She was a success as the chief of staff to Brazil’s first working-class president, Luis Inacio “Lula” da Silva, in 2003-2010. She was a political success in getting elected as Lulu’s successor in 2010, and was re-elected in a tight race last year. But being a president herself is not part of her skills set.

Two years ago Rousseff had an approval rating of 66 per cent. According to the most recent Datafolha poll, only eight per cent of the population now gives her a positive assessment, while 71 per cent disapprove of her performance.

Indeed, two-thirds of those polled believe that Congress should impeach her and remove her from power.

Part of the problem is the economy. Since it peaked in 2010 at seven per cent, Brazil’s economic growth rate has plunged. This year the economy is predicted to shrink by two per cent.

It’s not all Rousseff’s fault: the worldwide collapse in commodity prices has hit

Brazil particularly hard.

But in practice, the government in power at the time gets the blame.

Moreover, the austerity measures that she has imposed to deal with the fall in government revenue have hurt her own electoral base among poor Brazilians. So far she has not touched the groundbreaking “Bolsa Familia,” a modest cash handout that has lifted 36 million people out of extreme poverty, and she promises to go on raising the minimum wage, but pensions and unemployment benefits have already been cut.

An even bigger problem for Rousseff is the legal investigation codenamed Lava Jato (Car Wash). The biggest corruption scandal in Brazil’s rather impressive history of such things, it involves an estimated $22 billion in “suspicious contracts” going back for almost two decades involving Petrobras, Latin America’s largest oil company.

Some of it involved graft for personal enrichment, but most of it appears to be money skimmed off government contracts to pay for election campaigns

and other party political activities. Since the governing parties for most of this period have been Rousseff’s Workers’ Party and its parliamentary coalition partner, the Brazilian Democratic Movement, several dozen senior politicians from both parties have been arrested.

Worst of all, Dilma Rousseff was the chairwoman of Petrobras from 2003 to 2010. It was not her primary job, and she denies knowledge of any of the corrupt transactions. The investigating officers also say there is no evidence linking her to corruption.

But people are looking for somebody to blame, and support for her impeachment is strongest in the poorest areas of the country.

On the other hand, there is no charge against Rousseff that could justify an impeachment. Even in the absence of such a charge, a two-thirds majority in Congress could theoretically impeach her, but no such majority can be achieved in the current Congress.

Technical fixes for the problems of overpopulation are no more than a fairytale EDITOR'S NOTES Containing some tweaks to its population forecasts, the UN’s latest report predicts there will be 9.7 billion of us on the planet by 2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100. Considering that we’re sitting at 7.3 billion today and the place is a mess, those numbers don’t bode well.

It took thousands of years for us to reach a population of one billion by 1804.

However, it took only 123 years for us to double to two billion in 1927. The population hit four billion in 1974, and just 41 years later, we’ve added another 3.3 billion.

Such is the power of exponential growth.

As a closed system with finite resources, the planet can only do so much for its inhabitants, which includes a long list of animals and plants not labeled ‘homo sapiens,’ a fact we overlook at our peril. Every person, even one living the most basic of existences – an altogether too common sce-

nario in much of the world – puts a demand on the ecosystem. We all need air, water and food as a minimum.

Providing just that places another burden on the planet; those of us living in the consumption-mad West each place far more stress on those resources.

We are deluged with stories about climate change, food shortages, peak oil, epidemics and a host of similar unsettling facts. At the root of all those problems is the issue of population. Quite plainly, there are too many of us.

The latest revision of the World Population Prospects shows that trend is going to continue.

The study indicates the world has added approximately one billion people in the span of the last 12 years. Sixty per cent of the global population lives in Asia (4.4 billion), 16 per cent in Africa (1.2 billion), 10 per cent in Europe (738 million), nine per cent in Latin America and the Caribbean (634 million), and the remaining five per cent in Northern America (358 million) and Oceania (39 million). China (1.4 billion)

such ideas. Everything is fine. Or, if it’s not, we’ll find solutions, technological fixes. Don’t worry, be happy.

People of this mindset point out that many past doomsayers have been proven wrong. They’ll note how the famous warnings of English scholar Thomas Malthus (An Essay on the Principle of Population), whose name gives rise to the adjective Malthusian , failed to come to pass. Or point the predictions of more recent prognosticators such as Paul Ehrlich (The Population Bomb) as being proven wrong.

Interestingly, both Malthus’ and Ehrlich’s forecasts were in fact sideswiped by technology. In the case of Malthus, he could not have predicted that the forms of energy of his time – food for manual labourers and animals, wood for burning – would be supplanted by an explosion of fossil fuel uses. A similar thing happened in Ehrlich’s time with the massive use of technology – fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation – to grow food for the expanding billions.

Those very technological “fixes” have come with a high price, however. We’re seeing some of that climate change and the drawing down of aquifers in some of the most heavily irrigated spots, very notable right now in California and environs. There’s every indication that technology is reaching its peak in dealing with the woes of a growing population.

For University of California physicist Tom Murphy, there are very physical constraints. His popular blog, Do the Math, marries environmental, energy and economic issues in a very user-friendly way.

Discussing our energy use and prospects of efficiencies and new technology helping us deal with today’s problems and tomorrow’s larger population, he paints an absurdist picture of those who worship at the altar of exponential growth.

Having burned through fossil fuels that represent millions of years of solar energy – Murphy refers to them as the planet’s batteries – in just a couple of centuries, we’re on a very

unsustainable path. Even if we managed to harness the entire power of the sun (fantasy), our historical pattern of growth in energy consumption of almost three per cent annually would burn through that in a few centuries. Positing a growth rate of 2.3 per cent, Murphy does the math.

“At that 2.3% growth rate, we would be using energy at a rate corresponding to the total solar input striking Earth in a little over 400 years. We would consume something comparable to the entire sun in 1,400 years from now. By 2,500 years, we would use energy at the rate of the entire Milky Way galaxy – 100 billion stars! I think you can see the absurdity of continued energy growth; 2,500 years is not that long, from a historical perspective. We know what we were doing 2,500 years ago.

I think I know what we’re not going to be doing 2,500 years hence,” he writes.

and India (1.3 billion) remain the two largest countries of the world, both with more than one billion people, representing 19 and 18 per cent of the world’s population, respectively.

While most of the growth has been and will continue to be in other parts of the globe, there is that closed system we discussed. Not to mention that the smaller number of us in North America and Europe use substantially more resources. With other countries striving to follow our lead, the trend is not healthy.

It’s no coincidence that overpopulation figures prominently in dystopian books and films – large numbers of humans is a likely catalyst for environmental collapses leading to wars over food and water, competition for scarce resources, a premium on living space, and the potential for disease and rampant epidemics. Then there’s the near certainty that such crises would lead to nightmarish authoritarian police states, the kind we’re already building.

tough it out, and so far she has done just that.

Sunday’s big demos were mostly attended by white, middle-class people who probably never voted for her anyway. Her own constituency of poorer Brazilians, although angry about her austerity measures and rising inflation, have not yet come out in the streets against her.

That could change if the economic situation gets even worse. A major slowdown in China, Brazil’s biggest export market, could spell big trouble for Rousseff. So long as no evidence emerges that clearly links her to the corruption at Petrobras, however, she can probably stay in office until her term ends in 2018.

What she cannot do is restore popular confidence in her leadership.

She doesn’t lack the intelligence or the experience to be an effective president, and most of the time she gets her economic and social priorities right. There is no reason to believe that Lula, the man who finally brought change for the better in the eyes of poor Brazilians, would have coped any better with the economic headwinds that Rousseff has been struggling with. But he would still be popular, and she is definitely not.

She tries hard, but it just doesn’t work. She has been promoted to her level of (political) incompetence, and it is going to be a long three years for her and for Brazil.

enough to secure our safety, distinguishing us from Americans.

We were a secure country.

It was because of our world policies of peacekeeping.

Not that long ago, Americans would use our little flags on their packs. And then our government changed us from a peacekeeping country to one of war.

The whole point of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed with a series of enemies, to alarm the people and have them clamouring to the government for safety.

We didn’t have a homegrown terrorist threat in Canada. It has only been since P.M. Harper started his war rhetoric to further his political ambitions.

This unrest in the Middle East has been going on for more than 1,300 years – it’s a religious war, and we should not be picking sides and dropping bombs on people to further Harper’s political career. It’s a very high price

we have to pay to satisfy one man’s ambitions.

No more will the little maple leaf flag count for anything except memories.

Harper has done so much damage to Canada’s reputation in such a short time, from his Russia- and Putinbashing in Europe to his negative niqab comments.

We are a multiracial country, and for him to stir things up and cause dissent is unpardonable.

Harper constantly attacks our democracy, from the socalled Fair Elections Act, to stacking the courts and the Senate to the point where it is a meaningless Conservative body rubberstamping his policies.

It has been said that fascism is when government and big business join to run a country. That is where we are at now. Environmental protections have been removed from 98 per cent of our lakes and rivers to make it easier for big oil to push through their pipelines and

mining companies to rape our land. The only people that seem to care are our First Nations, and they are paying a very high price with all the cuts imposed on their healthcare and education to make them fall in line.

It’s only been eight years, but what big change in Canada. And I’m afraid they’re changes that can’t be reversed.

Going with the urge to go postal at a fish fry

A passion for MGs ... and speed Elmira’s David Holmes increases his racing stable of classic British cars with the purchase of 1959 model raced by legendary vintage driver Dick Baker; now ready to get it back out in action SCOTT BARBER There’s a thunderous roar as David Holmes revs the engine of his iris blue 1959 MGA Twin Cam. Pumping out 140 horsepower and weighing just 1,600 pounds, the speedy import once owned by legendary Canadian vintage racer Dick Baker can reach speeds upwards of 145 miles per hour.

After being purchased last spring from Baker’s sons, the rare British sports car became the fourth racing certified vehicle in Holmes’ ever-growing fleet.

Now, with some minor tuning and a test-ride at the track in Grand Bend out of the way, the longtime Elmira resident is ready to put the car back in the race.

“The car handles very well,” Holmes said. “We took it to Grand Bend, they have a small race track, a road track, to try it out.

My son took it out and he tried to make it spin out and slide and he couldn’t.

Another feature of the car, besides the clam shell and the bodywork that’s been done on it, is the motor has

been moved back a foot in it, which distributes the weight more evenly over the tires and makes for far better cornering.”

It’s a stunning car, with exquisite curves and impossibly perfect bodywork for something that has been racing since the early 1960s. And it was recognized as such with the best in class and best in show awards earlier this month at Port Perry’s Brits on the Lake car show.

But it’s more than just a showpiece. Holmes, 68, has been racing with the Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada for nearly a decade now, and shows no signs of slowing down.

He may have taken up the sport later in life, but racing was always in his blood, he says.

Growing up in the 1960s in the rural area of Brampton, Holmes lived on a farm with horses and cattle, and plenty of fields, dirt roads and open spaces to rip around on as a teen, new behind the wheel.

OPEN COUNTRY In this day and age, when it seems every special interest group is protesting some tradition, I’m quite surprised that I haven’t yet received a letter from the International Society of Fish, Ontario Chapter.

You see, we had a fish fry yesterday.

A fish fry is what many anglers, their friends and family dream about this time of year. And the fact that we dream about it is probably why fish never sleep.

Simply put you take delicious, nicely prepared fish fillets – yesterday we dined on smallmouth bass – and you soak them in eggs, milk or water and dip them in your favourite batter before dropping them in a pan of hot oil.

Then, you fry those fillets until they are golden brown and, later, as you are consuming them, you think, “I wonder what those poor folks at Buckingham Palace are eating tonight.”

If you are lucky, there are also baked beans, potato salad and more.

As you would expect, there is an etiquette associated with such high society

Taking it to new heights on the trampoline

Elmira’s Nathan Shuh to follow up bronze medal at Canadian championships with a pair of international meets, with stops in Portugal and Denmark SCOTT BARBER Nathan Shuh is ready to take on the world.

With a bronze medal performance at the Canadian Trampoline Gymnastics Championships in Calgary last month, the 17-year-old Elmira native is poised to make his international debut this fall.

“Things went really well,” Shuh said, describing his showing at Calgary’s Genesis Centre July 24-27.

“My goal was obviously to finish all of my routines and to stay consistent.

Unfortunately, a lot of the (other competitors) fell in their routines, so if you finished your routine, you were almost guaranteed a place at the World Age Group Competition and a medal. When everyone was going, I kind of sensed that there was an opportunity to

impress the selection committee. And then I finished my routine and it felt really good because I was trying to redeem myself from last year.”

Unable to secure a coveted place on the Canadian international team in 2014, Shuh redoubled his efforts for the 2015 season. And his hard work is paying off.

In February, Shuh won two silver medals representing Ontario at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, British Columbia.

Now, after graduating from Elmira District Secondary School in the spring, the tall, powerful trampolinist has moved up to the world renowned Skyriders Gym in Richmond Hill, where he trains alongside Olympic gold medalist Rosie MacLellan and veterans Jason Burnett and Karen Cockburn.

“I am really enjoying it because there are a lot of people who are my age and my skill level, so it’s nice to build off of that and it makes you work really hard,” Shuh said.

“The coach, Dave Ross, he throws curveballs a lot, so it’s fun to come into training and wonder, ‘what’s Dave going to make us do today?’”

With the Canadian championships out of the way, Shuh is keeping busy working at Airborne Trampoline in Cambridge, while also preparing to move to Markham in September to study business at Seneca College.

And the fall and winter months are sure to keep him on his toes, with two European competitions already on his schedule for October and December.

“Before World Age

Groups I have a competition in Loule, Portugal, which I am pretty excited for,” Shuh said. “It’s in the south, in the Algarve, so that will be fun to see.”

The Loule Cup runs October 29-31, and will feature many of the best trampolinists from all over the world.

Then, December 3-6, he’ll head to Odense, Denmark for the World Age Groups, a meet he has been striving to get to his whole career.

“My goals for Portugal are just to finish my routines,” Shuh said. “I am going to put in some upgrades for that competition; hopefully I’ll have two triples and more twisters.

I am hoping to add more difficulty. And then by Denmark I am hoping that those routines will be super consistent and super high and well executed.”

Katie Harnock can add a Parapan Am Games silver medal to her ever-growing trophy case.

The performance in Toronto August 8-14 earned the Canadian Women’s Wheelchair Basketball squad a spot at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, Brazil, where the Elmira native will look to win her first Paralympic medal.

“We had a really good tournament,” Harnock said.

“To make it through to the final, and to qualify for Rio, that is obviously a big deal for us, but losing is always tough.”

Canada fell 80-72 to the United States in the finals.

The loss marks the third time in as many Parapan Games that the U.S. has bested the Canadian side in the gold medal match, a fact not lost on Harnock.

“I am definitely getting tired of that,” she said.

A veteran on the international athletics scene, Harnock won the 2006 and 2014 world championships. She was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal in 2013, the Stan Stronge Memorial Award from the Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association in 2014 and was nominated for the Kitchener-Waterloo athlete of the year award in 2015.

A standout on the University of Alabama’s team where she graduated in 2013 with a degree in English, Harnock is known for both her passing and scoring skills.

A tough competitor on the court, Harnock will be looking forward to a chance at revenge against the rival United States team in Rio next summer.

For now, she’ll “take a bit of a breather,” before ramping up training again in the fall. Harnock will compete for a spot on the Paralympic squad in December.

First, there is the dress code. The surest way for a man to appear to be a newbie at a fish fry is to show up wearing a shirt, jacket, ascot, slacks, socks and loafers. Unless they are camouflaged, you need to lose at least three of those items.

Women can wear anything they want so long as it is also horseshoe appro-

priate.

The only other hard and fast rules are that you can’t utter sentences that include the terms “low fat” or “vegan options” and you can’t say, “I wonder if this fish batter would work with tofu.”

Otherwise, a fish fry is a delightful social occasion, especially for the angler who possesses the bragging rights.

In our case yesterday,

that was me. Because my skill, angling savvy and hard work fed the group, I was able to mention it briefly on occasion. This, by the way, is reason enough to have a fish fry.

I didn’t make too big a deal of it, however.

“This is a fine piece of fish,” one person said.

I nodded and then proceeded to tell him the details he needed to hear

to complete the culinary experience.

“I believe that bass you are eating was the fourth one I caught that morning. The waves were high, so I decided to fish the lee side of an island using a black bead head woolly bugger – some call it Black Death, in my capable hands …”

Unfortunately, just as I was about to get into the minutiae about the strip

and pause retrieve I used and how the moon phase and barometric pressure came into play, my knowledge-thirsty friend abruptly packed up and left. He said something about needing to make an urgent trip to the post office to mail a parcel.

Odd, since they were closed for the day.

Luckily, I overheard someone at the far end of the yard whisper, “Great

fish.”

I rushed over and said, “Did you know I used a sink tip line and level 4 pound fluorocarbon leader to dupe the bass you are eating?”

“That makes sense,” he replied. “I caught several larger bass this morning using a bait casting rig and spinner baits …”

I stopped him mid-sentence and told him I had to go to the post office.

Rank earns experience at U.S. Amateur tourney in Illinois SCOTT BARBER

Coming off a secondplace finish at the Canadian Amateur last week, Garrett Rank posted another impressive showing south of the border at the prestigious U.S. Amateur at the Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois this week.

Through 36-holes on Monday and Tuesday, the Elmira native finished in a tie for 36th at two over par, securing a spot in the match play tournament which began on Wednesday.

The run ended there though, as American Sepp Straka knocked him out three and two in the round of 64.

The 27-year-old former Elmira Sugar King and current NHL referee played in the tournament last year as well, that time making it through to the round of 16.

No Canadian has captured the U.S Amateur title since Gary Cowan won at Wilmington Golf Club in 1971.

It’s an extremely difficult tournament to win, since

the best amateur golfers from across the world play in the historic event each year.

It’s an event that has been won by golf legends like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson and Bobby Jones.

Unlike the more conventional stroke play tournaments where the lowest score wins, match play sees players compete head to head with one other golfer each round, with points earned for scoring the low-

est on each hole.

The field starts with 64 competitors, and is cut in half each round. Last year, Rank made it to the round of 16. Listowel native Corey Conners was the top Canadian in 2014, finishing runner-up to Gunn Yang of South Korea.

While there is no prize money up for grabs, the winner earns a spot at the 2016 Masters, U.S Open and the British Open, while the second-place finisher earns an exemption for the former two.

Garrett Rank fell in the first round of match play at the U.S Amateur, Wednesday at Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois. A week prior, Rank finished second at the Canadian Amateur at Toronto’s Weston and Lambton Golf and Country Clubs.

I’ve played my past 3 seasons in Elmira, coming in as a young, inexperienced 16 year old. Only to leave with an unexplainable amount of valuable lessons not only on the ice, but how to conduct myself as a courteous young man off the ice as well. The Elmira Sugar Kings gave me an opportunity to play at a high level, make friendships that will last a lifetime, and ultimately develop into the player and person I am today.

“We raced through the fields in old junkers we bought for probably $15,” Holmes remembered. “We had a lot of fun.”

The passion for racing was sidelined during his working life as a golf course superintendent at the Elmira Golf Club and later, as the owner of an excavating company.

But upon retirement, he decided to buy a Jaguar X-KE, as a throwback to his younger days when he idolized the iconic British luxury car. And while the Jag didn’t quite capture his imagination, it wasn’t long before a classic MG caught his eye.

“It wasn’t ’til I was pretty close to 60, when I bought an MG-MGB and I went to Mosport to watch the racing; there was one guy in an MGB and he flew around the track,” Holmes said. “It blew me away. I had to meet him and I had to find out what kind of engine he had in his car.

So I found his car, and he stepped out of his trailer and I looked at him and said, ‘my God, he’s older than I am. Maybe I can do this!’ The guy was John Target, from Ohio and very British, but just the most

charming man you could ever meet and we talked about racing. And that gave me the impetus to start racing.”

In the years since, Holmes and his son Evan have both taken up the sport, often competing in 10 races across North America each year.

It’s been a successful run.

Holmes captured the VARAC club championships in 2007, 2010 and 2013, and placed second in 2013. He won the 2007 and 2014 Canadian Historical Grand Prix events at Mosport, the 2014 Indian Summer Trophy Race at Mosport, the 2009 Spring Trophy Race at Mosport, the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix at Watkins Glen and was awarded the 2010 Copper Bucket by the MG Vintage Racers of America for “rep-

resenting the spirit of vintage racing.”

This weekend Holmes will compete in the Ted Powell Memorial at the Calabogie Motorsports Park, near Ottawa. He won’t be racing the MGA just yet, he says, as he’s waiting to race it for the first time at Mosport where he has had a great deal of success in the past.

Fortunately, he has three other MG race cars, including a 1949 MGTC that was owned and raced by the late-great Tommy Hoan.

Holmes also has three additional road cars, including a pair of MGs and an Austin, plus a few projects in the works for whenever the time opens up.

But those will have to wait until the winter, as we’re still in the middle of racing season, and Holmes is just getting into gear.

The Elmira local was visited by the company’s owner and vice-president this week, all the way from England. Only two weeks into the store’s opening in Conestoga Mall, they were impressed with how well received it’s been so far.

“I was just asked by the owner of the company, why do you guys think you’re doing so well? There are many reasons,” Zajac said.

“When the VP came the other day I was highlighting there’s so much in this area to do. I was handing over brochures saying look at what you can do.

Within 20 minutes, within an hour, within two hours of here, we have skiing, we have hiking and camping, cottages, swimming, everything. I say it’s because this area is very active. We are very into being outdoors.”

Zajac previously worked at Aeropostale for five years, where she was known for spearheading the Jeans for Teens campaign – collecting jeans for local homeless youth. She plans to continue her volunteering efforts in some fashion with Mountain Warehouse.

“Retail is not necessarily respected, but it’s so interesting because I feel like I’m actually contributing to society, to our community.

That’s why I get involved with so many volunteer things because community matters to me and I really

want to be a part of it,” Zajac said.

One of the keys to the company’s success is cutting out the middleman.

They go straight to the supplier to purchase stock, that way everything they sell is a Mountain Warehouse product and customers aren’t paying for the mark up of another brand name.

This means their prices are typically lower than their competitors’, she says.

“Everybody has a limited amount of money. I want when you spend it, I want

you to feel good about it, and I want you to get your money’s worth,” Zajac said.

Now, she’s off to Chicago until the end of the month to set up an outlet store for the company. Despite the fact the Waterloo store just opened August 1, she’s been busy training and setting up stores across Ontario since May. When hiring her staff, she made sure she covered her bases. She has employees knowledgeable about fishing, camping, soccer, rock climbing, and the list goes on.

“I don’t downhill ski but I’ve got a couple employees that ski. My dad fishes, I don’t fish. I’ve got people here that fish. My assistant, she’s going on a hunting trip. We can support so many different people, so I needed a staff that has a diverse background,” Zajac said.

She says their biggest sellers so far have been the backpacks, or rucksacks as they’re called in England, and sleeping bags. Having a

Grain farmers – who comprised a sizable portion of our readership – were livid that railways were handling grain so poorly. Prices were already in the basement, and the inability of the railways to get the grain to port made things even worse.

That was 30 years ago.

But rail transportation woes still dog prairie farmers today.

As for the magazine, it was entering an era of tough decisions. Subscriptions were strong, but ad sales were slumping. Money for travel was at a premium.

News people will find similarities with the situation I’m describing here and life in many of today’s newsrooms, which are struggling to make ends meet.

But sometimes, you just have to show up. Modern technology does indeed make news coverage from afar much more vivid than it was decades ago. But is there any substitute for ac-

ROBERTS: Attending events in person provides the chance of a much deeper experience FROM | 16

tually being there?

Ultimately, I didn’t go. To cover it, later, I picked up the story by telephone.

It turns out the protest was less passionate than anticipated. But even so, the impressions I passed on to readers lacked the kind of detail you get when you go somewhere and actually attend an event – the sounds, the smells, the spontaneity, the overall atmosphere. It all adds up to a total experience, worth the sacrifice it takes to get there.

About 600 people from almost 60 countries decided months ago to come to the University of Guelph earlier this week, for the 6th International Barcode of Life conference. Barcoding is a rapid, efficient and digital technology, developed

by Prof. Paul Hebert at the University of Guelph, which is destined to become the norm for species identification, product authenticity and biodiversity preservation.

Using a short gene sequence, the university and

the international barcode community have already generated more than four million barcodes for 500,000 species.

People active in the barcode community knew they had to show up. These include many people from our own country, from government and academia in particular, who have become involved in this technology.

True, they could get new knowledge from reading about the conference later, picking up on what happened at the various events

that took place over its fiveday span. And the organizers did a great job making sure this option was available to the many thousands more who are involved in this growing technology, or have an interest in it.

In particular, they streamed video of featured talks given by world experts in the field, including Hebert. They used social media extensively, using the hashtag #dnabacodes2015.

They published abstracts of all presenters. And they invited all kinds of media,

from my SPARK student Joanne Pierce to local and national media.

A global conference like this is about more than species identification; it’s about how the many and differing thoughts on a vitally important new field are synthesized and advanced when an expert group assembles.

Of course, there are the global connections. How do you put a value on that?

Some of the research results presented at the conference came about from scientific relationships developed at the fifth annual conference, in China.

Come fall, she expects jackets to be a big seller, along with more rucksacks as school season nears.

“I’m hoping people really start to notice our footwear.

And come fall people are smart and they buy their winter stuff mid-October.

We’re going to have ski packages for kids and adults and the price will be shocking, how good the price is,” Zajac said.

They’re planning to hold a ski night at the store November 5.

She says customers have taken to the store well so far and are relieved they don’t have to travel to other cities to purchase their outdoor equipment. The store is also fitting in well because so many people in the region are travelers.

“It’s amazing to hear all the stories of all these people,” Zajac said. “We have multiple families coming in going to Mount Kilimanjaro. I have students

that are starting their coop semester and they’re doing environmental work in the Yukon. I’ve got a retired couple that are going to Norway.”

The first customers who walked in the door the day they opened spend their winters in Hawaii, so they were buying clothes that dry quickly.

Zajac notes they’ve got a kids section with clothes and footwear for all seasons, especially products which will keep them warm and dry in the winter.

“Even just as a retailer you have a responsibility to your customers, to the mall, to the community at large,” Zajac said. “I love that I get to contribute in so many ways, whether it’s helping a customer out that’s having a hard day, it’s making that child try something on and feel good about themselves, that’s huge. I want kids to be proud of who they are and be confident in what they’re wearing.”

While a job in retail might sound boring to some people, two days are

never the same for Zajac.

She says she loves the visual challenge of creating the store windows, alongside analyzing the business numbers, but most importantly working with her staff.

“I get to shine in so many different areas and I love developing my people.

Ultimately, it comes down to people, the people that I choose to have with me, and I love when they care.

I empower people like crazy,” Zajac said.

The company is slowly expanding into North America, with more stores in Canada than the U.S. right now. Founded in 1997, there are more than 200 stores in the UK and Europe.

“It’s been a difficult time in retail for the past four years. But this is a company that’s incredibly successful in the UK and they’re expanding. Not too many companies right now in retail are expanding,” Zajac said.

She added, “It’s just exciting to be in a company that’s doing well.”

From the hall of fame to the Maryhill stage Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Show already creating a buzz at Paul Weber’s Commercial Tavern WHITNEY NEILSON The Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame will be well represented at the Commercial Tavern in Maryhill next weekend.

Hall of Famers Johnny Burke and Larry Mercey will take the stage August 30 for an afternoon of traditional country tunes, accompanied by award-winning fiddler Shane Guse.

Commercial Tavern owner and country musician Paul Weber will back them up with help from his brother and sister.

“It’ll be their old and some not so old hits that they’ve had,” Weber said.

“There will be a lot of stories about the old days on the road, when the road was actually a road. Every week we’d be moving to a new job and traveling the country. So just a lot of good time stories, about how they picked certain songs, or how certain songs were written. It’ll be just a really good day of laughs and great songs.”

Weber’s calling it the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Show. He’s been thinking of putting together the show for a couple years, but got serious about it when Burke was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2012. The Mercey Brothers, which Larry was a part of with brothers Ray and Lloyd, were inducted in 1989.

“To get in the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame is really quite an honor, especially as an artist. So there’s guys who their whole lives are coun-

try music, travel the country, coast to coast, Europe and all over the place, just to garner the recognition it takes to be inducted. It takes a long time. It’s a long process. Your peers nominate you, but it’s a pretty good selection of people you go up against,” Weber said.

Weber met Burke and Mercey when he was tour-

ing himself. They’ve performed together before, but not like this, and not at the Commercial. He says country music shows like these don’t get big crowds like they used to, but they’re already seeing people call for advance tickets for this show.

“It’ll be a great show. And it’s a chance to see two of the pioneers of Canadian

county music together,” Weber said.

Originally from Rosaireville, New Brunswick, Johnny Burke moved to Toronto in the ‘60s and played in a variety of bands before going it on his own.

He has recorded 14 albums in that time.

His single, Wild Honey, won song of the year in 1978. Another song country

fans can expect to hear is Love Don’t Grow on Trees.

“We just pick and sing and have some fun,” Burke said.

He says they’ll do some cover songs from artists like George Owen, George Strait, and Merle Haggard the old, traditional country.

Burke was asked to attend the Country Music Awards in Halifax later this

year, where he’ll induct the 2015 Canadian Country Music Hall of Famer, Dianne Leigh.

“It’s a big deal,” Burke says of being inducted. “It’s quite an honour because so far there are only 54 members in it. I’m thinking more than half are dead. The criteria is quite strong, what you have to do in your career. I’ve been playing music since 1960, so 65 years I’ve been doing this. Still another 45 years to go.”

While out East he plans to do a mini tour. He’ll also be playing at the Marmora Country Jamboree on Sept. 11 and a few shows in Northern Ontario this fall.

“I just enjoy working with Paul and Larry and the band,” Burke said. “It’s a fun night for me. It’s always a lot of fun because when you work with these people for years it’s not work actually. It’s more like a party.”

The 75-year-old adds, “I’m quite busy and I’m enjoying it.”

Lead singer of The Mercey Brothers before they disbanded in 1989, Larry Mercey brought together George Lonsbury Jr. and Al Alderson to create The Larry Mercey Trio in 2005.

He now performs with them and solo. The Mercey Brothers won six Juno awards in their day.

Now, Mercey’s looking forward to getting together with Weber and Burke, who he doesn’t see very often.

Peacefully with family by her side, Edith completed her journey in this life and went to be with her Lord, on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at Parkwood Mennonite Home at the age of 101 years. Edith, the beloved wife of the late Rev. C.B. Carr (2004) was the last surviving member of the Daniel and Mabel Weber family. Loving mother of three sons, David (Janet), James (Carolyn) and Tom (Diana). Cherished grandmother to six grandchildren, Andrea (John), Julianne (Shawn), Tracey (Paul); Lisa (David), Brad (Susan); Deirdre (Terry), and the late Steven (Janet). Special great-grandmother of 17. The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, August 21, 2015 from 3:30-5:30 and 7-9 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, 62 Arthur St. S., Elmira. The funeral will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Calvary United Church, 48 Hawkesville Rd., St. Jacobs, with reception to follow. A private family interment will take place at a later date.

Ruth fought a courageous battle with extreme health issues in the past 3 months and was determined to overcome the issues and return home to her family.

heard things like it was the best youth theatre program in the country, that kind of thing,” Davis said.

Interested singers auditioned in the spring and had to work on learning the music before they arrived last week. He noted more singers auditioned and were chosen for roles, but decided to work summer jobs instead to pay for school.

“We have had as many as 50 for some productions. This would be a relatively smaller cast for us. And I think sometimes it depends on the production we choose. If we had chosen something more popular, maybe we would have got more,” Davis said.

They typically don’t sell out their shows. Last

year’s production of Carrie went well though, he said, with big audiences. One of the drawbacks of choosing The Boys in the Photograph is that people don’t come out in big numbers for a musical they aren’t familiar with.

Last year’s production supported StopaBully.ca, by collecting prom dresses for Prom Blitz, a charity that provides free prom clothes for those in need.

This year they’ve joined forces with Waterloo Minor Soccer, to help bring athletes to the theatre.

Davis said a donation has made it possible for a few soccer teams to attend the Saturday matinee.

Thuroo notes the biggest learning curve for her is being more confident.

“It’s not a huge cast, so you’re on stage a lot. It builds your confidence. I found just from these two days I’ve been asked to do stuff I hadn’t done before, so that’s good,” Thuroo said.

The show runs August 21-23 at the Conrad Centre for the Performing Arts in Kitchener. There are two 7:30 p.m. performances on the Friday and Saturday, and two 2 p.m. matinees the Saturday and Sunday, for four shows total.

Pair of Elmira volunteers tend to the aches and injuries of athletes at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto WHITNEY NEILSON A couple of Woolwich’s own have been lending their talents to the Parapan Am Games this month.

Katie Mitchell and Sheila Forler Bauman of Woolwich Physiotherapy were selected based on their experience in the field, through an application process.

This marks Mitchell’s first time at the Parapan Am Games. Bauman is practically a veteran, having been involved since 2007.

“I’m in Mississauga at the Hershey Centre and I’m a physiotherapist and an athletic therapist. So I do a lot of clinic here, but I also work in the community as an athletic therapist. I work field of play for wheelchair rugby, powerlifting and goalball, which was pretty interesting. We actually got to play goalball last night,” Mitchell said.

She applied to the games from the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association last year, and found out she was selected in November.

She was chosen for one of the higher risk venues for the more contact sports, due to her experience with rugby in Waterloo.

She explains what it was like to play goalball.

“It’s for visually impaired. If you think of a court, the net is as wide

as a court. So there’s three people on each team and they wear these shades that are like a ski goggle kind of, but they’re completely blacked out, so you can’t see anything. They have a bell inside a dodgeball, so you pretty much have to throw it as hard as you can, and then dive and save it,” Mitchell said.

Teams from more established countries have a therapist that travels with them, Mitchell says.

Countries like Guatemala or Chile don’t, which is where physiotherapists like Mitchell come in handy. They have a treatment room set up in the sports complex where she’s treated soft tissue injuries, minor concussions, muscle strain, and joint mobilization.

“A lot of the things we’re running into though are the rugby players,” Mitchell said. “Some of them are amputees or they don’t really have hand function, so they get such awful blistering either in the stumps of their amputation or their hands from the gloves.

They’re wheeling their chairs the whole game, plus they wheel all day, so they get awful wounds in their hands and the elbow area.”

you can go and hear country music at all that I know of. I’ve been in the country music business almost 60 years myself, I really want to see that continue as long as it can. There’s a lot of people like myself in my age group that still love country music, that kind of country music, the old country,” Mercey said.

Some familiar tunes you might hear include Hello Mom, Who Wrote the Words, She Feels like a New Man Tonight, and You’re Still in these Crazy Arms of Mine.

As for what it meant to him being chosen as a Canadian Country Music Hall of Famer, he says, “To me it’s the acknowledgment of your peers of what you’ve done all your life and you were successful at it.”

He’ll perform some Christmas shows later this year as he usually does, but he’s particularly looking forward to getting together with Burke and Weber next weekend in Maryhill for an afternoon of good old-fashioned country.

“You hear a lot of people say, well you can’t hear music anymore, there’s no place to go. Well there is a place to go and it would be great for them to come out and support the show,” Mercey said.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door or by calling the Commercial Tavern at 519648-3644. The doors open at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, with the show running from 3-6 p.m.

“Sometimes they may have one intact limb and they don’t complain. Some other athletes are a little more picky, they don’t like their tape jobs. It’s like is it still attached? You’re probably good,” Mitchell said.

She notes the motivation she gets from seeing the athletes is one of a kind.

Mitchell applied to volunteer at the games because you can’t pass up an opportunity to attend international games when they’re basically in your backyard.

“It doesn’t happen very often and it is quite competitive to get onto core medical teams in Canada to travel to these types of games around the world.

So you have to climb the ladder and start somewhere. I’ve done provincial games before. So this is the biggest game I’ve done as a certified therapist,” Mitchell said.

She hopes to work her way up to traveling for international tournaments and attend major national games through her work with the Waterloo rugby club.

“Everyone wants to go to the Olympics, but it’s a long ladder to get up there because everybody wants to do that stuff. So it’s a bit of a journey, so everybody kind of works toward that goal,” Mitchell said.

When it comes down to it, volunteering at the games is all about the people you meet. She enjoys being able to bounce ideas off of different practitioners and see how they assess injuries. It’s not every day you meet a physiotherapist from Brazil.

She adds the level of skill at the Parapan Am Games

“The abilities of the athletes are almost extraordinary based on what they are capable of. It’s almost above and beyond. When you’re actually on the courtside it’s more evident of how extraordinary their abilities are. The sport might look like it’s not fast or anything but the actual tactics and things that go behind it, it’s like I could never do this. The energy it takes to wheel a wheelchair is crazy,” Mitchell said.

Canada’s women’s wheelchair basketball team has led her around the world and now back to Ontario for this month’s Parapan Am Games. She’s been at the games since August 2 and finished up last Sunday.

“What I did was get in with wheelchair basketball which then led me to have the opportunity to attend my first Parapan Am in 2007 in Brazil,” Bauman said on the line from Toronto. “That was the first international event I attended with wheelchair basketball. I had connected

with the sport on a couple levels, one being Katie Harnock plays on the women’s team and I had known Katie and followed her basketball career to that point.”

They also hosted a Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event for eight years at Woolwich Physiotherapy, which Bauman owns. They invited the Twin City Spinners, who came with nets and taught kids how to shoot from sport wheelchairs.

“I love the sport. It’s a great sport. It’s fast, it’s exciting. It’s very strategic.

It’s a sport that involves amazing athletic ability.

It’s the sport itself and then of course the people are the biggest reason. I’ve met all kinds of fabulous people.

I’ve had great opportunities to travel all over the world with the team,” Bauman says, as to what draws her to continue with the women’s wheelchair team.

Common wheelchair basketball injuries include repetitive strain in the shoulder and elbow, finger and thumb sprains, concussions, and neck injuries.

She says Paralympic sport has come a long way, even since she started in the field some 30 years ago.

It’s also encouraging to see the profile of wheelchair basketball rise.

When asked what her favourite place to travel with the team has been, she’s quick to decide.

“You can’t really beat being at home,” Bauman said. “They’ve done a great job with the village. They played a game last night and the crowd was fabulous.”

She notes Beijing was special too because it was her first time attending the Paralymics, and the culture was so new.

“In all honesty every big tournament that I’ve been to brings its own kind of special touches. It’s really fun to just see what different countries do when they’re hosting,” Bauman said.

The next big stop for Canada’s women’s basketball team, and Bauman, is Rio for the 2016 Paralympics.

“I would love to go to Rio with the team. They’re already qualified. Certainly I’m excited to hopefully be involved in the road to Rio,” Bauman said.

Canada’s women’s basketball team took the silver medal.

That smell of rain after a dry spell has a name, petrichor, but not a reason WEIRD NOTES

Q. Why does rain falling after a dry spell offer up such an earthy aroma, almost like a perfume?

Scientists seem to have just sniffed this one out.

A. The earthy smell, called

â&#x20AC;&#x153;petrichor,â&#x20AC;? seems to spring from chemicals in the soil, but the actual mechanism remained a mystery, says Andrew Grant in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Science Newsâ&#x20AC;? magazine. Now a new study by MIT mechanical engineers Cullen Buie and Youngsoo Joung, using high-speed cameras on water droplets, suggests that each droplet on contact releases a cascade of tiny

bubbles that then burst. As they burst, the bubbles then release chemicals from the soil â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a kind of â&#x20AC;&#x153;aromatic fizz.â&#x20AC;?
