Bolender More than just a Fair day in Drayton Park tapped as location for Elmira splash pad STEVE KANNON BOLENDER PARK IS THE target location for what organizers hope will be a world-class splash pad in Elmira.

That’s the preferred location of a majority of Woolwich councillors, many of whom still have concerns about the cost of the facility, specifically annual operating expenses estimated at $40,000.

In approving the site, subject to technical studies clearing the location, councillors meeting Tuesday night were adamant the project committee would have to pick up all capital costs. That includes the extension of water lines, technical studies and landscaping the committee suggested be a municipal expense.

“I can’t support any capital investment coming from the township,” said Coun. Larry Shantz, noting groups in Breslau and St. Jacobs are also looking at splash pad projects.

Fundraising efforts under the auspices of the Woolwich Recreational Facilities Foundation have garnered some $500,000 so far for the Elmira project, though more may be needed to cover all of the costs.

The proposal would see the development of a 40foot by 100-foot splash pad with 23 individual water features, divided into three age-appropriate play zones, from toddlers to teens.

At 4,000 square feet, the facility would not only be large by regional standards, but even at the provincial level, noted organizing committee member Shelley Martin.

“We’re looking to bring a world-class amenity to the Township of Woolwich,” she told councillors. “We want this to be a destination. People will come to use this.”

Arguing against any scaling back of the plan, she stressed that benefits of the large facility, including the multiple play areas accommodating kids of all ages and abilities.

While not pushing for cutbacks, councillors were largely adamant about finding ways to reduce the projected operating costs, which grew substantially from the $7,500 to $10,000 a year discussed just last fall.

Mayor Sandy Shantz found little support as an advocate for covering the operating costs, likening that to subsidizing the cost of the swimming pool and youth programs.

“This is something for our children,” she said.

Like Coun. Larry Shantz, however, Coun. Patrick Merlihan had issues with setting a precedent for future splash pad builds, including the operating costs.

“I’m really balking at the $40,000. If we agree to $40,000 here ... then what about Breslau and St. Jacobs?

Coun. Murray Martin noted the operating costs are likely to rise dramatically given the large annual increases in water costs. The same applies to electricity.

To reduce the $40,000 per year operating cost, staff will look at shortening the proposed schedule of 24 weeks a year, 11 hours per day.

“It is a little bit long,” recreation director Ann McArthur acknowledged, noting prime time would be the nine-week summer break from school.

She expects to come back with revised numbers when councillors meet again Aug. 23.

New research shows connection between walkable communities and obesity levels

LIZ BEVAN THE MORE YOU WALK, the healthier you are, says the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

In a recently released study, the government research branch found that residents in southwestern Ontario living in communities with high walkability scores, meaning how easy it is for pedestrians to walk around, are less likely to become overweight and obese.

A higher than average bodyweight can lead to many different health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, arthritis and even mental health issues, says Dr. Marisa Creatore, epidemiologist and one of the study’s authors.

Researchers watched weight and more for 11 years, starting in 2001, factoring in Statistics Canada census results and covered 8,777 neighbourhoods and three million adults between the ages of 30 and 64.

Creatore says the results showed that there is a direct link between a walkability score, and the rate of obesity and diabetes.

The farther someone lives from amenities like grocery stores, key destinations like work or school and even poor layout of the streets all have a negative impact on health.

She says she hopes the results of the study will help dictate future growth in smaller communities, like Elmira.

“Presumably there is going to be development and there is building going on.

Communities are changing. As those communities change and as the municipality makes decisions on how they want to grow, they need to make those decisions very thoughtfully around how they are designing their neighbourhoods,” she said. “There are certain layouts that just do not encourage people to walk. The actual output of our models is really more relevant for larger urban centres, but the 10,000 foot message is that design matters even at a small level.

It makes a difference.”

For those that are already settled in areas where the walk score may be low, it is more difficult for them to have the motivation to just go for a walk without a destination in mind.

“If you are living in a community where to go get a carton of milk, or even bring your kids to school, if walking there is something that you can easily do and is WALKABILITY | 5

Elmira native Hannah Harms has made Whitehorse her home for the past eight years where she works as a groundskeeper for the Yukon government. She came back for a three-week visit with her family last month. [SUBMITTED] WHITNEY NEILSON WHETHER IT’S PADDLING DOWN the Yukon River or biking to Alaska, Hannah Harms finds plenty to do in Whitehorse.

She’s spent the last eight years calling the Yukon capital home and returned to her hometown of Elmira recently for a three-week visit with her husband, Dan, a born and bred Yukoner.

“I call myself a statistic because I went up for a summer and then didn’t leave. I went up for a summer after doing a year of travelling and I met a girl from up there; she was super passionate and really excited about Whitehorse and I was kind of intrigued by who is excited about a city,” Harms said.

She said once she got up there she understood the hype.

“The people, the place, the culture, it’s a unique spot that’s got everyone from granola cruncher hippies to redneck Yukon guys,” Harms said.

She works as a groundskeeper for the Yukon government.

Most people there work in mining, tourism or for the government, she says with a laugh.

When she hears about the winter back home she’s often thankful she’s doing snow removal in the Yukon and not Ontario. She says they get a lot of snow up there but it’s more spread out instead of a heavy snowstorm all at once.

Like most Yukoners they spend a lot of time enjoying the outdoors. They’re involved with their church’s youth, taking them on trips to go snowmobiling and skating.

“In the afternoon we often go paddling down the Yukon River and end up at a little island we call Sandy Island and we have an annual bike relay that we’re a part of that goes from Haines Junction to Haines, Alaska. That’s a pretty awesome annual activity we do,” she said.

Her husband’s family is into hunting and she went along on

a moose hunting trip last fall.

This trip stands out as a highlight of her time in the Yukon.

“We all had to stop skinning this moose for about five minutes to look up because the northern lights were the most spectacular northern lights I’ve ever seen. That was a pretty spectacular moment and event. We were in the middle of nowhere and not a soul to be seen,” she said.

Harms previously worked in a coffee shop for a few years in Whitehorse and she’s seen all sorts of characters come through. The city of nearly 30,000 is known for having a variety of great coffee spots.

“We have just as many coffee shops as we do people.

You’ve got everything from the average Joe coffee shop to the fancy Alpine Bakery coffee shop that’s got everything vegan or dairy-free. Everybody’s got their own place they like to go to, and we’ve got ours,” she said.

A few things do stick out that she misses about living in Elmira. One is the Kitchener Blues Festival which just wrapped up last weekend. Another is being able to drive 20 minutes and be in a whole different place. The third thing she misses is so perfectly local, it has to be mentioned.

“My husband and I would probably say the lack of maple syrup,” she says with a laugh.

They’ve made good use of their vacation over the past three weeks. They went to the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market and filled their backpacks with summer sausage from Kitchen Kuttings. They took a trip to Wasaga Beach and Dan got burnt to a crisp because he’s not used to the hot sun.

Heading to the movie theatre was a must do and of course a trip to Canada’s Wonderland.

Rehabilitator leads a real wild life Looking after the seven ducklings orphaned in Elmira park all just part of a day’s work at Wildlife Haven Waterloo WHITNEY NEILSON SEVEN OF BOLENDER PARK’S fuzziest residents have taken a vacation to Jarvis.

Elmira resident Vivienne Delaney found the ducklings outside her home near Bolender Park after the mother duck and three other ducklings were hit by a car on July 27.

The surviving ducklings were sent to Wildlife Haven Waterloo, where Joy Huggins cares for a variety of animals as a licensed wildlife rehabilitator before their release back into their natural environment. She cares for mammals, as well as waterfowl and migratory birds.

Huggins took care of them for a few days before she sent them to another wildlife rehabilitator in Jarvis who has farmland and other ducklings.

“They come in, basically they’re really upset because they just want mom and of course mom’s not around.

My job is to try to calm them down and keep them quiet and to get them to eat.

When they get really frightened they don’t want to eat and all the brain is telling them is they want to get out of whatever I have them in and try to get to mom,” Huggins explained.

She says a group of 10 ducklings is a common number, noting seven survivors is good. When they first arrived she guesses they were between five and seven days old.

“Generally it’s touch and go with these guys. If you get one or two in and one doesn’t eat it’s really hard to get them to eat, but if you have a group and one decides it’s going to eat, then the rest see it, then it’s kind

of like monkey see, monkey do,” she said.

They ended up eating and calming down. They’ll be released back into the wild when they’re ready. Typically they’re released on a body of water when they have a lot of their feathers but still can’t fly yet.

“They’re actually pretty easy. They’re just a little messy is all, cute and messy,” she says with a laugh.

You can only have wildlife in your possession for 24 hours before you have to give it to a licensed rehabilitator. She’s been licensed for eight years and receives no funding except donations.

“We never keep them, ever. It’s more like just raising them until they’re at the age when they can go off on their own,” she said.

Huggins also has a merganser duckling right now.

A diving duck, it doesn’t

mix with mallards. That duck is going to be heading to a nature centre for education. He can’t be released because he’s so imprinted.

Imprinting is a crucial part of an animal’s life at the early stage when it develops attachments.

As for the seven ducklings, she says this is late in the year for them to be born.

May is her busiest month, with calls coming in hourly about injured animals.

Once a group of ducklings are hatched they all stand up and follow the mother duck for the nearest body of water.

Often the mother duck will walk over a manhole without a problem, but it’s not the same for the baby ducks.

“Of course she can walk over but the babies go bomp, bomp, bomp, they fall in.

In fact in Kitchener last year somebody who worked for Kitchener, he said they had

people hired on in the month of May where they specifically go around and have time just to get these ducklings out of the sewers, that’s how often it happens,” she said.

Right now she’s taking care of a porcupine, a groundhog, some squirrels, the merganser duckling, five crows, doves, barn swallows, cedar waxwings, cardinals, a bunny and six chipmunks.

She began wildlife rehabilitation when her daughter was young and they saw a baby squirrel with a broken leg at Waterloo Park.

“There’s not enough people doing it and there’s too many animals that aren’t getting help because of that,” she said.

She wants to help educate people about when it’s safe to intervene with injured wildlife.

“Baby birds can’t fly out of the nest. When you look at

the bird you think it’s got all its feathers, it should fly, but it can’t. So a lot of people will take that baby, take it home and think there’s something wrong with it, they’re trying to get it help, and in fact they’re taking it away from the mom,” she said.

“Or people won’t want to pick up a baby and try to help it because they’re afraid that if they touch it mom won’t then take it back, well that’s not true either,” she said of a common misconception.

She’s all full right now but she says she’s glad to help people who rescue injured wildlife find another rehabilitator.

Woolwich on-farm business seeks zone change for expansion of scale, product line STEVE KANNON LOOKING TO KEEP HIS on-farm business running year-round, a north Woolwich farmer wants to branch out from bagging fertilizer to include processing de-icing salt during the summer downtime.

Robert Brubacher’s bid for a zone change on his property at 7021 Sideroad 5 W. was the subject of a public meeting Aug. 9 in Woolwich council chambers. His application calls

for an increase in the space the ancillary business, Wellington Fertilizer, takes up on the 56-acre farm, to 2.5 acres from 1.7. Also requested are provisions for the bagging of additional granulars such as salt, the conversion of the existing 1,215-square-metre barn to a storage facility, and the installation of a truck weigh station.

duction at the facility, adding more jobs. Currently, the fertilizer operation runs September to May. The plan is to process and bag deicing salt during the summer months to keep the plant running 12 months of the year.

“That would provide more jobs for the community,” he said.

Black noted that Brubacher bought the farm property to the north, moving his family to the house there. His beef operation is

now based on the new site, freeing up the existing barn for use by the processing business. The bulk of the land is used as a feedlot for the beef operation.

Woolwich council last granted an expansion to the business in the fall of 2011.

Neighour Darren MacMillan, who objected to the expansion at that time, said Tuesday that many of his concerns remain, particularly truck traffic on the narrow roadway. He noted that a fire on the property

last week underscored the dangers of having explosive material on the site. That puts his family at risk.

“Do I have an evacuation plan? No, I don’t. Why should I have to?” he asked of dealing with the threat.

Township fire chief Rick Pedersen noted that the department has had some concerns about the property, but changes to the operation and subsequent inspections have all been satisfactory.

“We are monitoring it.”

Woolwich reaches deal with CUPE Woolwich’s unionized workers will receive a one per cent raise this year, 1.1 per cent in 2017 and 1.2 per cent in 2018 under a new contract reached between the township and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1542.

As is customary for the township, the same increases will apply to the larger non-union staff.

The deal was ratified by Woolwich councillors meeting Tuesday night.

For 2016, the increases will add

about $51,000 to the budget – $15,672 for union workers, and $35,231 for non-union employees, reports CAO David Brenneman.

Along with the pay increases, the two sides tweaked items such as a new winter premium of $0.65 per hour, which will be phased in over three years for road crews during winter plowing season. The meal allowance rises to $14 from $11, and there will be a small hike in the footwear allowance (to $179 from $175 in 2016).

The deal, reached with the assistance of a provincially appointed conciliation officer, is retroactive to Jan. 1 and runs through Dec. 31, 2018.

Maryhill driveways to be redone Eight Maryhill homeowners living with badly cracked driveways for the past eight years may soon have their troubles smoothed over. Meeting this week, Woolwich council approved the spending of $46,000 to deal with deficiencies left behind from a 2014 watermain and roadway reconstruction project.

Poor workmanship on the part of the contractor was to blame for a number of problems, including cracked concrete driveways at eight homes on Isley Drive

and Notre Dame Avenue. A holdback of $18,000 – the township typically hangs on to two per cent of larger projects, turning it back over to the contractor if the work is satisfactory – will be applied to cover the work.

Councillors heard the replacement of driveways should be completed by mid-September.

Home prices rise

There were a total of 588 home sales in Kitchener-Waterloo and area though the Multiple Listing System (MLS system) of the Kitchener-Waterloo Association of Realtors in July. This represents only a

0.9% increase in sales compared to July of 2015, but ranks as the most active July on record since 2008.

Strong sales activity helped to bring year-to-date total sales to 4,108, a 15.2% increase compared to the same time last year, and 21.7% above the 5-year average.

Active residential listings continue to remain depressed in comparison to the same time last year. Currently, the number of active residential listings at the end of July sat at 1,073, which is 37.3% lower compared to the same period last year. This translates to 59.4% fewer available listings on the market today than the same time last year.

July’s sales included 364 single detached homes (up 0.8% compared to July 2015) and 144 condominium units (up 16.1%). Sales also included 48 semi-detached homes (up 9.1%) and 26 freehold townhouses (down 49%).

The average sale price of all residential sales in July increased 13.2% to $387,102 compared to July 2015.

Single-detached homes sold for an average price of $452,799 an increase of 14% compared to last year. The average sale price for an apartment-style condominium was $240,944, an increase of 14.2%. Townhomes and semis sold for an average of $285,611 (up 10.7%) and $308,479 (up 16.4%) respectively.

We all know that the easier we make those healthy choices, the easier it will be to stick with them.”

This is the first study to look at the obesity and diabetes rates over a long

term. Other studies, including some that Creatore has been part of, tend to look at a single neighbourhood at one point in time, rather than tracking changes over a decade. The results were satisfying for the researchers.

“I think what we were excited to see how true, when you were actually looking at a single community over time, there really was an effect over time of living in a walkable community

and body weight and diabetes,” she said. “That was very heartening for us to see that it has held true in that way. It just continues to support the hypothesis, but now it is more than a hypothesis.”

On Aug. 3 at approximately 12:44 p.m., Wellington County OPP were contacted by a concerned member of the public after they observed a small dog inside a vehicle with one window down a crack that was parked in front of a store in Fergus. The dog was crying and panting heavily. The owner eventually returned to the vehicle after 10-15 minutes and was warned by police. The dog was extremely thirsty and was given water but otherwise appeared to be unharmed.

As a result, the OPP is urging all pet owners to never leave any pets in their vehicles unattended. This could have deadly consequences for the animal. If it’s too hot for you to sit inside the vehicle then it’s too hot for your pet, police say.

On a day where the temperature is 26 degrees, the temperature inside a vehicle parked in the shade reaches 32 degrees. If you leave your motor vehicle in the sun the temperature can reach 71 degrees.

No hope for the public good under Wynne gov’t SHOWN TO BE IN the pockets of large corporate donors via pay-for-access schemes, the Wynne government has also been the patsy of unions, squandering billions of tax dollars as a reward for ethically challenged election support.

An investigation by the Globe and Mail shows unions accounted for 94 per cent of all third-party advertising during the last three provincial elections. Collectively, they spent $15.4 million of the $16.4 million spent thusly since 2007.

Corporate advertising amounted to $641,000 – we know they tend to go the direct route when it comes to influence – while other advocacy groups spent $409,000, according to the newspaper’s findings.

On the union side, most of the advertising by a pair of umbrella groups – Project Ontario and Working Families – came in the form of attack ads against the Progressive Conservatives.

Reeling from revelations of fundraising quotas and the selling of access to the premier and cabinet ministers, Wynne at first denied the practice, then downplayed it before promising legislation to reform election fundraising and to put some controls on third-party election spending.

Almost assuredly, whatever measures finally adopted won’t go far enough: an outright ban on donations and third-party advertising. Real democratic reform would also end lobbying, as well as the revolving door between government and corporations/lobbyists.

As it stands right now in Ontario, individuals, companies and unions can contribute $9,775 annually to the party of their choice, plus the same amount again during an election campaign. If they’ve got another $6,650 each year, they can pass that along to the constituency associations.

A comparison to the larger federal campaigns does not put Ontario in a favourable light. Federal rules ban corporate and union donations, limiting individuals to a maximum of $1,525 to each party annually, plus another $1,525 to the riding associations and candidates of each party.

Still considered the bastion of corruption – old habits die hard – Quebec puts every other jurisdiction to shame when it comes to election finance reform. Along with banning donations from corporations, unions and other organizations, the province caps individual contributions at $100.

It also limits third-party spending as part of the toughest controls on election financing in the country.

On the advertising side, the province is proposing to limit third-party spending. Bill 2001 would cap spending by corporations, unions and individuals at $100,000 during an election, and at $600,000 in the six months leading up to it.

Chief electoral officer Greg Essensa says the measures don’t go far enough, telling the Globe current rules are so lax they could allow politicians to “circumvent contribution and spending limits” by co-ordinating their campaigns with those of third-party advertisers.

Surveys consistently show that a large majority of us believe governments are driven by wealthy interest groups, especially corporate donors, and that governments regularly act unethically to help their business friends and are not doing enough to stop corruption. The same applies to public sector unions, as the bureaucracy bloats and those on the payroll have a growing influence on policies that benefit themselves at the public’s expense.

That needs to stop. An outright ban of such practices is needed, along with sweeping changes at Queen’s Park, starting with those currently abusing the power they have.

In the midst of another heatwave, Woolwich’s discussion about future splash pads seem to have a few people hot under the collar.

Being a chicken means being less afraid of malaria WORLD AFFAIRS I HAD MALARIA ONCE, and it was extremely unpleasant. I had been working in Yemen, but I actually contracted it when I was flying home on a Dutch airline that must remain nameless. The flight made a stop in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and the plane was parked out on the runway while waiting to pick up passengers – right on the edge of a mangrove swamp on the Red Sea coast.

The pilot turned the engines off to save fuel, and then opened the door to give us fresh air. It was night-time, and so a million mosquitoes swarmed into the plane. In five minutes everybody had been bitten multiple times. The passengers then revolted and the pilot shut the door and turned the air con back on, but it was too late.

I fell ill and collapsed a couple of weeks later, when I was at my wife’s family’s house in a small village in southern France, but I was lucky. My wife, who grew

up in Africa, thought it was malaria, and the village doctor (who had served with the French army in Africa) confirmed it, so there and then he gave me a massive dose of antimalarial drugs.

By the time they got me to the hospital in Bayonne, they couldn’t even find any of the Plasmodium parasites in my bloodstream.

They kept me in hospital for a couple of days anyway, but it wasn’t that bad, because in French hospitals they give you wine with your meals.

Small crisis, not many hurt. But the point of the story is that none of this would have happened to me (and presumably to some of the other passengers too) if only there had been chickens on the plane.

Statistics can sometimes lead to significant medical breakthroughs. In this case a team of Ethopian and Swedish scientists did a statistical study in three villages in western Ethiopia about the feeding habits of nocturnal, malaria-carrying Anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes. The results were instructive.

Outdoors, the mosquitoes preferred to feed on cattle (63 per cent of bites), with human beings coming next (20 per cent), and goats and sheep bringing up the rear (5 per cent and 2.6 per cent, respectively).

Indoors, people provided 69 per cent of the mosquitoes’ meals, compared to cattle at 18 per cent and sheep and goats coming last again. (In this part of Ethiopia, people sometimes bring their animals indoors at night.)

There were also plenty of chickens around, both indoors and out. But in one outdoor sample, only one female mosquito out of 1,200 had chicken blood in her. In the indoor sample, none did. Mosquitoes don’t bite chickens.

Why not? Maybe evolution has taught mosquitoes to avoid chickens because chickens eat mosquitoes.

But how do mosquitoes actually spot a chicken?

Certainly not by sight: tiny compound eyes are good for spotting movement, but they do not give you much detail or any distance vision at all. So maybe by smell? That would be handy.

We can’t disguise ourselves as chickens, but we could try smelling like them. Or at least have something that smells chickeny nearby. In one experiment, the scientists even hung cages with live chickens in them over people’s beds at night, and lo! They had very few mosquito bites – fewer even than people sleeping under insecticide-treated bed nets.

Admittedly, this approach is a bit impractical for general use. Something more compact and less noisy would be preferable.

So the scientists tried putting chicken feathers near people’s beds, and it still worked. Then they tried distilled essence of chicken odour (isobutyl butyrate, naphthalene, hexadecane and trans-limonene, if you must know), and that worked too.

Almost half the world’s population (3.2 billion people) lives in areas where malaria-bearing mosquitoes are present. About one in fifteen of those people actually comes down with malaria each year, and alDYER | 8

That night in London, a real love-in for a Canadian icon EDITOR'S NOTES AS THE MAY ANNOUNCEMENT that Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie had terminal brain cancer washed over the country, the coverage and outpouring of public anguish was unlike anything you could imagine for any other artist, so intertwined with Canadian culture has the band become.

A final tour was announced. Tickets sold out in minutes. It’s easy to imagine the frenzy of longtime fans who’d seen the band on numerous occasions right through to those who’d never been to a Hip concert eager for a final chance to do so.

Everyone looking to be a part of what promised to be an emotional farewell, even as we hold out hope for a medical miracle that makes this Hip tour as final as The Who’s.

Why the national angst?

There’s certainly been plenty of ink, and far more pixels, dedicated to

explaining Canada’s devotion to the band since its 1983 formation. Is it the Canadiana? There’s plenty of that. Many of the songs tells us stories about Canada, though without any nationalistic fervour. Downie’s lyrics are poetry that we can actually enjoy, set to a rockin’ soundtrack – high school English class was never remotely this compelling. (Paying more attention during CanLit would have been helpful in deciphering songs such as Courage, which draws on Hugh MacLellan’s The Watch that Ends the Night.)

I’ve always thought that somebody needed to lock Downie in a room, not releasing him until he’d explained the lyrics of his songs. Full of poetic allegories and metaphors, many of the songs defy easy interpretation, with Downie himself eager to keep things ambiguous. (That doesn’t stop us from trying. See, for instance, fan Stephen Dame’s website hipmuseum.com).

snow flurry that rolls in off of Lake Erie, which seems appropriate: Kingston boys, the members of the Hip are steeped in Great Lakes/St. Lawrence River lore. On this night, there are odes to the water, including a cover of Randy Newman’s take on the infamous fire on the Cuyahoga called Burn On Big River, with Cleveland references setting off the locals. Later, everyone is transfixed by Downie’s take on Gordon Lightfoot’s The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald – about as Canadian as you can get.

The crowd goes wild, lapping up everything the band’s offering. There are clearly plenty of Canadians, the Hip never having managed to make it big in the U.S., an inexplicable phenomenon to those here who love the band.

Well, perhaps explained by the aforementioned Canadiana that proved no barrier to one young convert from Erie, Pennsylvania, who was enthused volubly (it was loud inside the confines of the House of Blues), “These guys are so awesome! You

guys (Canadians) are so lucky!”

Live shows have always been The Hip’s bread and butter. They’re what got them to an eponymous EP in 1987 and then the record label breakout Up to Here, where the stadium rockers were born. Fans have been keen for more ever since.

Monday night in London, the band’s first stop in Ontario as they make their way to the ultimate farewell at home in Kingston on Aug. 20, was nothing short of a love-in. Every song and every move was greeted with poignant enthusiasm befitting the circumstance, though the night was nothing less than upbeat – this was no downer, least of all up on stage.

The reality of Downie’s illness and the crowd’s hopes were readily apparent in the roar that erupted as the singer reached a particular point in Day for Night’s Scared: “Their lives need not be shortened/ Truth be told, they can live a long, long while ...”

On a night when everyone was reading things into Downie’s enigmatic lyr-

ics, the title track to Fully Completely – an album that really cemented The Hip’s iconic status – there was particular resonance in “You’re going to miss me/ Wait and you’ll see/Fully and completely.”

Even the second, onesong encore of Fiddler’s Green – written for his sister following the death of her five-year-old son – felt uplifting, despite more than a few teary eyes.

We were all there for the music, of course, but in reality it was a collective thank-you to Downie – part message of love, part don’t-leave-us. Not surprisingly, the ovation went on much longer than usual. The band members embraced before trickling off stage until only Downie remained.

Clearly emotional, he did a lap around the stage – including the rear, where even the obstructed-view seats sold out – acknowledging the outpouring of affection and giving it back.

A voice from up high shouts, “We love you, Gordie.” Very true, but that much was already obvious.

are straight ahead rockers or deal with recognizable subjects (Wheat Kings’ story of David Milgaard or Fifty Mission Cap’s Bill Barilko), but what’s really going on at The Hundredth Meridian? I like to think it has to do with Robert Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, but who knows? Of course, that’s the point – we each get to decide what the song means ... and means to us.

That’s perhaps why The Hip are embraced by hockey hosers and alternativemusic aficionados alike.

A live Hip show is always an event, not only for Downie’s trademark asides, stories and frantic gyrations, but because of the atmosphere, audience included.

For the pure emotion – and Canadiana – of a Hip show, I take you back to Cleveland, Apr. 14, 2007.

Taking a jaunt across the border to see the band always pays dividends: smaller venues, and enthusiastic crowds, mostly Canucks out for some road-trippin’ good times.

Between 3,540 and 6,510 new cancer cases in Ontario each year result from environmental factors. Environmental carcinogens represent roughly twice the cancer burden from drinking alcohol and about one-half the cancer burden from smoking. Some 2,090 to 2,990 new cancer cases from UV radiation in sunlight; 1,080 to 1,550 new cancer cases from radon; 290 to 900 new cancer cases from fine particles in outdoor air pollution.

“Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals are out of touch with the reality that Kitchener-Waterloo families are facing. Since last month, 2,000 families have lost a job, and our region faces the third highest youth unemployment rate in Ontario, and the sixth highest in the country. Liberal promises aren’t helping Kitchener-Waterloo.”

Cost overruns at the Woolwich Memorial Centre continued to wreak havoc with the budget last year, but pushing back some capital spending allowed the township to finish 2011 with a small surplus, councillors learned this week. Woolwich’s operating budget ran over by $226,871, while on the capital side the township spent $411,362 less than it planned to, providing a net surplus of $184,491.

Anything that cuts into those numbers would be most welcome, and prevention is much better than cure. Cheap prevention is even better, and compared to insecticide-treated bed nets and various experimental vaccines, just sprinkling some “essence de poulet” (chicken fragrance) around before going to bed has got to be cheaper.

Essence de poulet probably won’t be on the market for a while yet, but hats off to Prof. Habte Tekie of the University of Addis Ababa and Professor Rickard Ignell of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, who led the Ethiopian-Swedish team that did the study. (Their full report is available online in the July 21 issue of Malaria Journal.)

Meanwhile, if you want to bring a chicken along on our next camping trip, it’s fine with me. But don’t get the supermarket kind.

To the Editor, RE: ALAN MARSHALL’S FILING of charges against Coun. Scott Hahn.

Perhaps we need to elect some new councillors before Mr. Marshall runs out of people to harass, although I’m sure he’s done his best to dig up dirt on those not yet attacked.

Our Woolwich councillors are good people who give of themselves to make our community a better place, and I’m sure the compensation they receive doesn’t come close to making up for the hours that they put in. I have

toyed with the idea of throwing my hat in the ring of local politics, but every time a person like Mr. Marshall surfaces it makes me wonder if it would be worth the effort.

Perhaps Mr. Marshall should find something constructive to do with his time: I always have yard work that needs to be done. Maybe he finds some sort of self satisfaction in finding fault in others, I don’t know. I do know that I’m getting tired of my tax dollars being wasted on frivolous complaints – maybe Mr. Marshall should be billed for the money he’s cost the township.

Tournaments pushing young golfer’s game to new heights Elmira’s Isiah Katsube started early, but now he’s really stepping up the effort with his offseason game LIZ BEVAN IN THE WINTER, ELMIRA’S Isiah Katsube plays AAA hockey, but in the summer, he is playing 18-holes.

On Monday, he won the junior tournament at the Elmira Golf Club, and late last week, he placed 11th in provincial competition.

A member of the Whistlebear Junior Performance Team, 14-year-old Katsube has had a banner year on the links. It is only his second year playing in tournaments despite having been golfing since he was five years old.

“There is a little bit more pressure. It isn’t just a casual game anymore,” he said after winning the junior tournament in Elmira on Monday. “I just find the sport fun to play. It is relaxing. Golf is more about just you.”

For two days last week, Aug. 3 and 4, Katsube was going up against Ontario’s best in the U15 Bantam Boys’ Championship. He placed 11th, shooting 74 on the first day, and matching his score on the second.

He had the lowest score of all five players from the Kitchener-Waterloo area and came second in birdies on the field.

“I thought I had some pretty good rounds. It was a bit up and down, but

overall, I thought I did okay,” he said. “My goal was to be in the top 10, and I was close.”

It took Katsube a couple of weeks to get himself in the swing of things this year, posting higher scores than he had hoped, but in the past month, he has seen significant improvements in his game, and will be working on his short game – putting and chipping.

“It has averaged out in the past month,” he said of his scores. “Now, I am consistently shooting around a 75. I played a couple more tournaments and I think that got me in it.”

He is continuing the tournament circuit, playing in Kitchener last Tuesday, and a few more over the rest of the summer before the hockey season starts up.

Katsube’s father, Maki, says he is just proud to see his son doing so well at his chosen summer sport.

“He has something that he is passionate about and he works hard at it,” he said. “I think he realizes that there are a few things that he needs to work on to get up to the next level, but GOLFER | 10

The other day was a prime example why. I was fishing for bass on a big local lake when, suddenly, it started raining and was threatening to rain even harder. In situations like this, I always worry about the weather ruining my perm, so I bee-lined for the boat launch, which was a straight run about a mile across the lake. Since I was in my little tin boat powered by my 4-horse, I estimated I’d get there in 6 to 8 hours.

Luckily, I had entertainment on hand to keep me occupied. You see, there was this guy at the launch, trying to back up his trailer.

Apparently, he was very new at it.

First, he jackknifed left.

Then, he jackknifed right.

At one point I believe he decided to take a roundabout route by actually doing a u-turn and backing the trailer away from the water in a direct route through the woods.

Kings boost connections with minor hockey teams New fundraiser is one way to bridge the gap between junior organization and minor hockey associations WHITNEY NEILSON THE ELMIRA SUGAR KINGS are aiming to strengthen their connection with the local minor hockey associations through a new fundraiser.

The team is hosting an “elimination night” on Oct. 1 at the Elmira Lions Hall and there are limited tickets left.

It’s a chance for hockey par-

ents and fans to get together for a night of music, food, and a chance to win everything from free minor hockey registration to $3,000.

Sugar Kings executive member Scott Basler says they were brainstorming a fundraiser they could do with all three organizations together and he recalled attending other successful elimination nights.

“There’s 150 tickets and they all get thrown into a draw. This is a draw where you don’t want your name to be called,” he explained.

One ticket is for two people, typically a couple, and the first person whose ticket is drawn from the drum will get their child’s minor hockey registration paid for the season by the Sugar Kings. After that ev-

ery fifth ticket drawn will receive clothing from the Sugar Kings or one of the minor hockey associations.

Every tenth ticket drawn will win $100.

“Once we get to the top 10, obviously the tenth ticket would be $100 and then down to the fifth ticket would also be $100.

We’ve got five tickets left in the drum, so the fifth

last would get $100, fourth would get $300, third would get $700, the second last ticket in there would get $1000 and the very last ticket in the drum would get $3,000,” he said.

They’ll slowly start to draw the tickets throughout the night to drum up the suspense and make it a big event for the last 10 tickets drawn.

While it’s a chance to raise money for all three groups it’s also about aligning the Junior B team more with the minor hockey teams, to get both male and female minor hockey players out to watch the Sugar Kings play at home. They’re available for purchase in advance through Ashley Gerber, the team’s executive and coaching staff or at the door. Players and coaches will be on hand at the event as well.

“It’s going to be probably the biggest event of the year, it’s going to be a lot of fun. This is huge for Wellesley and the Applejacks.”

The event runs Sept. 9 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Wellesley Arena. You must be 19 or older to attend.

Tickets are $20 per person.

The Applejacks also have their main training camp Aug. 20 and Aug. 21.

They’ll play two preseason home games at the end of the month on Aug. 25 versus the Mitchell Hawks and Aug. 27 against the Mount Forest Patriots.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. for both and they’ll be played at the St. Clements Community Centre, since the ice won’t be put into the Wellesley Arena until after the Wellesley Apple Butter and Cheese Festival.

IT’S TIME TO DUST off your spurs and come out for a fun night in support of your Wellesley Applejacks.

The Junior C hockey club is hosting a country night next month at the Wellesley Arena, titled Jacks ‘N Spurs with all profits going back to the team.

“We’re just looking for lots of creative ways to bring in money for the organization and bring people together. We’re going to have a very exciting season this year. We have lots of great events planned, so it’s just a way of getting everyone excited for the season,” said fundraising committee member Ashley Gerber.

Eight Second Ride will be performing for the night.

They often play at the Stampede Corral in Kitchener, and Gerber says they’re pretty well known and popular in this neck of the woods.

The idea for the event came when the committee was shooting fundraising ideas around in the spring.

They talked about how the local firefighters had held a dance and it brought out a huge crowd.

“We thought ‘hey why don’t we try doing a dance as well’ because it was so successful and it’s something that Wellesley needs and everybody in the town had a lot of fun. We thought we’d give it a try and switch it up a little bit,” she said.

The committee has added some new members this year and with them came more ideas. They don’t have a financial goal in mind, just that it’s a successful night of fun and monies raised for the team.

The ticket includes admission and the live band.

“And then we’re going to have a late night snack, which will be pulled pork and then we also have a mechanical bull coming in and an inflatable hockey shoot out game. And then we’re also going to have a margarita bar, and two or three other bars serving beer and liquor,” she said.

They’re also planning a barbeque later this year for the community to meet the players and the parents. Last year they did a clothing drive in December where people who came out to a specific Applejacks game brought hats and mitts which were

“Since I’ve been a part of the Sugar Kings and I have young kids I just noticed there was a gap between the Sugar Kings hockey and minor hockey. We’re trying to make it a better partnership,” he said.

They haven’t picked anything specific they’ll use any profits from the night for. Whatever they give to the Woolwich Wildcats and the Woolwich Wild will be theirs to use as they wish.

Tickets have been snatched up quickly since they announced the elimination night. Local returning Sugar Kings players will be there, along with new and former Sugar Kings parents

and lots of minor hockey parents. The evening is for those 19 and older since alcohol will be served.

“Being a hockey parent I know how crazy the season is and this is Oct. 1, it’s the start of the hockey season.

We wanted to get involved with minor hockey and say the craziness of hockey is starting, here’s one night for parents to come out and get away from the kids, go mingle with hockey parents...just something different out of the rink that the parents can enjoy. That’s really what we pushed and it’s really taken off,” Basler said.

Fergus-based country band Moonshine will be performing at the fundraiser and the Elmira Golf Club’s restaurant, Grill on the Green is catering.

“We’re hoping with this year if we can make it work and it’s a success that we can continue on for a couple years to create that partnership and keep it strong,” Basler said.

Tickets are $100 for two people and includes admission, food and a pair of Sugar Kings game tickets.

watched something like this before, let me tell you it is riveting stuff. You get drawn right into the story and you feel for the characters involved. By the 123rd attempt, I was actually rooting for the fellow. I laughed, I cried, and stood and cheered him on when he somehow narrowly missed my SUV and trailer as well as several other ve-

hicles.

As trailers go, this one was a real cliffhanger too.

And I mean that in the truest sense – at one point I thought he was going to back it off over a small cliff.

Honestly, Helen Keller would have done a better job.

In short, the suspense was killing me and I couldn’t wait to see how it turned out.

But I’ll have to though.

You see when I got within 150 yards of the ramp, he saw me and drove forward and parked along the side of the ramp. When I landed, he walked towards me said, “I’m trying to decide whether to leave my boat in the water and go fishing or take it home. Think this storm is going to pass?”

My immediate thought was that by the time he actually got his trailer in the water, autumn would

pass. But I have learned, in situations like these, some things are best left unsaid.

“I guess you need to use the ramp now,” he said. “So I’ll wait.”

“You don’t have to,” I replied. “There’s plenty of room for three trailers on this one.”

“I’ll wait!” he said, rather tersely.

So I backed up my trailer, loaded my boat, secured everything and drove up

the ramp where it was presumably safe. Then I pretended to check my trailer and waited to see how it all ended.

That man, however, remained in his car and refused to back up in front of an audience. So, I put my popcorn away and drove off. For all I know, he’s still there.

I’m hoping those folks who create reality shows catch onto this, because

in my experience, this was far more entertaining than anything the Kardashians have ever done. Heck, if you could get the Kardashians to back up boat trailers, you might even turn their show into something that approaches entertainment. I could see it now, Backing up with the Kardashians. It makes perfect sense. Heck, I hear they like to show off their back sides anyhow.

Sun Rays looking to boost their numbers Heading into second season, team for special hockey players has room for more people on and off the ice “They’re all individual.

They all have individual needs but they’re all very happy to be there. They’re very excited to be there.

You get to know them, they get to know you, you build up some nice bonds and there’s some fun interactions,” Kamo said.

She says the team is comprised of a committed group of parents and Jamieson makes a point to listen to the needs of the team and reflects what’s best for the players.

WHITNEY NEILSON RAMPING UP TO THEIR second season, the Woolwich Sun Rays are looking to welcome more players and volunteers to the team.

Founder Julie Jamieson says they finished their inaugural season with a dozen players and they should all be returning, with two or three new faces expected to hit the ice.

Last season the special hockey team had six games and also played in a tournament in Kitchener.

“It went really well. We were well supported by the community, by businesses in the community, by families, and players and guardians,” Jamieson said.

She says they have a healthy roster of volunteers and most are returning, but it would be nice to have a few more for when people have to miss a weekend.

Volunteer Denise Kamo worked with special needs kids before she retired.

Helping with the Sun Rays has been a nice transition for her.

“It was just a continuation and I could stay in touch with them. Actually one of my students signed up so I got to see him last year every week and stay in touch with his family,” Kamo said.

She says as long as the team exists she plans to be there helping the players on and off the ice.

For those considering if volunteering with the team would be a good fit for them she says they don’t have to have a lot of background with special needs kids. All they need is an interest in understanding them and supporting them, along with a positive attitude.

“I think you’ll learn about kids with special needs and how they are pretty normal. They like to have fun, they like to learn

“We wanted to try one here and it is a lot handier and it’s really nice to play with other athletes that she knows from the community or from ARC,” Mikjaniec said.

The Sun Rays played Taryn’s former team twice last year. She enjoyed seeing her old teammates again.

“She says she gets

traded. She says she’s been traded now three times,” Mikjaniec says with a laugh.

Taryn likes to stay near the boards and practice her skating. She goes from bench to bench chatting with the players. She especially enjoyed meeting the Kitchener Rangers, and had no qualms about asking them for autographs and chatting with them.

St. Clements a hub for ringette players Nosal family members have been spending the summer running training camps to boost the sport LIZ BEVAN RINGETTE IS IN THE Nosal family blood. This summer, the St. Clements residents have been spreading the love of the sport to girls all around the Waterloo Region and beyond.

Since the beginning of July, Scott and Terry Nosal, along with daughters, Sam, Paige and Sydney, have been running ringette training camps for those just learning, as well as already seasoned players wanting to push themselves to the next level.

Their next camp runs in St. Clements starting on Aug. 22 at the community centre. Mom Terry Nosal says it is all about getting ringette out there, and giving the family the chance

to share their expertise in the sport.

The Nosal sisters have played ringette for years, competing on the national and international stages, as well as coaching and mentoring younger players.

“Our kids have lots of experience, not only in playing and as participants in ringette camps, but also through helping us in coaching and learning how all of that works,” said Terry. “It becomes a part of your life and who you are.”

This summer has been a successful one for the Nosal sisters and their PEAK Nosal Elite Ringette Camp.

“It has been excellent.

They have two levels – the regular players and the AA players. The camp in St. Clements is going to

be very much about strategy, classroom sessions, intense dry land training and more,” said Terry. “The thing is to be able to share.

The girls want to be able to share their experience.

They have played for team Canada and travelled the world, and there are so many girls that are inspired by that.”

One of the goals of the summer camps is to get more girls and women interested in ringette, a sport similar to hockey, but with a much lower profile.

“It is really about inspiring young girls to get into sports. Just getting more women in sports is a big reason, but also to teach them really valuable life lessons. It is not just about teaching them how to play,

but how to take those skills into their lives,” said Terry.

The St. Clements camp is open for players at the U16 and U19 A and AA level, and is a bit more in-depth.

“It is going to be an elite camp and it is going to be really focused on endurance, strategy and nutrition. Things will get a bit more serious. They also get some take home programs to work on,” shared Terry.

The family is already planning for next summer, and are looking to expand their staff to accommodate more players.

“They put so much into it and it is only going to grow. Their focus is also building their staff. It is all about the counselors. As a parent, I can tell you what the parents are expecting,

and you also have to have fun. They are hoping that this is going to be an ongoing thing for a few years,” said Terry.

They also hope that with the camp and the success of the Nosal sisters, it will help people learn where St. Clements is and put it on the map in the ringette world.

“People have started saying, ‘where is St. Clements?’ The point is to get people into St. Clements, see where it is, experience who we are,” said Terry.

“We even have people coming in from out west to come here.”

“For a volunteer, I think you learn as much from them as they do from the volunteer or coach. They all have different personalities, most of them are very social and have a sense of humor. You get to see all those things, which a lot of people I don’t think realize until they are working with them,” Mikjaniec said.

Kerri Stoermer’s 10-yearold son Joshua will be returning to the Sun Rays for his second season this fall.

She says he loves hockey and can tell you statistics on every team, but he wasn’t able to play hockey.

This was the perfect option for him.

“The volunteers are fantastic, the ratio is fantastic.

I’ve never seen a better ratio. There’s almost more volunteers than kids. The kids that do need more help they get it. The kids that are more independent are able to do more on their own. They still get assistance and training and coaching. It’s geared to where everyone’s level is,” Stoermer said.

She notes it’s also affordable and players can try two sessions for free to see if they like it. Joshua now can get out on the ice once a week to play the game and learn in a way he never had the chance to before.

Needless to say, he’s looking forward to the start of hockey season, which is quickly approaching.

“He’s really improved a lot. He loves the team, he loves the coaches. He went from not being able to skate at all to being able to skate across the ice on his own. It’s amazing to see how much improvement he made,” Stoermer said.

Lack of rain taking a real toll on this year’s local field crops Hot weather and sporadic precipitation that varies across the region have farmers scrambling LIZ BEVAN CROPS IN THE REGION are a little more thirsty this summer, getting less rain than average, and baking in the blazing sun during long sunny stretches.

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) has been keeping a close eye on the situation, recently releasing an update on the status of crops in the province.

Ben Rosser is a corn specialist with OMAFRA and he says that corn is one of the crops that is looking for a bit of extra moisture.

Farmers are having to look to alternate uses for this year’s corn crop in certain areas like Woolwich and Wellesley townships, and indeed throughout the Grand River watershed.

“For your area, it is the lack of rain and in some spots, the sandy soil which doesn’t have a high moisture holding capacity. In some cases, some growers are going out there, looking at their crop and saying, ‘some of these plants are really struggling. I am not expecting a lot of good grain,’” he said. “If you have livestock, or if you have a neighbour who has livestock, it is possible to resell the crop for feed, chopping the whole plant and taking everything

instead of getting a lower than average grain yield.”

Sue Brocklebank, a conservation specialist with the Grand River Conservation Authority, notes some areas are faring better than others.

“There have been lots of localized rain events, and intermittent rain events, so it depends on where you are if your crop is stressed,” she said. “I was in Conestogo in July, and the area there has actually seen some good rain events, so they are doing fairly well, but down in Brant County, the crops are very stressed right now.”

According to the University of Waterloo weather station data, precipitation was below average in May, June and July and was present in short bursts and didn’t last longer than an hour, leaving little time for the water to absorb into the ground. In July, the region saw only 70.2 millimeters of rain. In an average year, the weather station expects 98.6 millimeters of precipitation.

Rosser says that it is late enough in the summer that some corn crops are out of luck, even if it were to start raining an average amount right away.

The nagging disconnect between unemployed Canadians and job openings in agriculture hit me last week when Statistics Canada announced that the country had lost more than 31,200 jobs in July.

The figure was a surprise to everyone. Economists had predicted a 10,000-job increase, not a loss.

And the news made me think about jobs waiting in agriculture, jobs mentioned in labour market research released to very little fanfare back in March, during the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council’s Growing the AgriWorkforce summit in Winnipeg.

Then, the research, involving more than 1,000 ag sector stakeholders (including 800 primary producers), sounded alarm bells for decision makers and the ag community itself.

ROBERTS: While unemployment levels rise, ag sector finds it difficult to fill job vacancies FROM | 13

cies were a whopping $1.5 billion.

That, it said, is three per cent of the industry’s total value in sales and production.

It also said primary agriculture (versus processing) had the highest job vacancy rate in the sector, at seven per cent.

And it went on to predict the current gap between ag labour demand and the domestic workforce – now at 59,000 jobs – could grow

to 114,000 jobs by 2025.

No wonder the council’s executive director, Portia MacDonald-Dewhirst, called the situation “critical.”

And she predicted it would get worse. Threats to primary production are also threats to processing and competitiveness, especially if we can’t find people who’ll work in jobs that turn raw commodities into value-added products.

The whole thing is a mess that just goes on and on.

MacDonald-Dewhirst called on government and

industry to move forward to find solutions. She noted that industry has been encouraging young people and workers from other sectors to get into agriculture as a career. But the council says despite these efforts, gaps exist and there still will be a large void in the future.

Well, the future is now.

In July, jobs were lost at a rate not seen since the ugly months of 2011. The overall unemployment rate rose as a result. Across Canada, the unemployment rate for young people is an embar-

rassing 13.3 per cent. It’s worse yet in mainstream cities where you’d expect to find jobs – for example, in Kitchener-Waterloo. The unemployment rate there for young people is at an agonizing 16.7 per cent.

In Ontario, commodity groups have banded together to try to get stakeholders onside for ag policies and programs that give farmers the latitude they need to produce food. Currently, their main issues are environmental, which are certainly a big priority

for the government.

But so is job creation and exports, which have a direct connection to agriculture.

To me, this is a huge opportunity for farming, for a high-profile campaign with measurable milestones, supporting a comprehensive ag job program.

Agriculture has looked after the employment gap to an extent with the temporary foreign worker problem, an admirable supply-and-demand initiative to fill jobs that Canadians don’t – or don’t think

– they like to do.

But like the name says, it’s temporary. And the ag employment problem is critical.

Shouldn’t Canada have something long-term to augment the temporary foreign worker program?

Something modern, domestic and permanent?

Something that seizes on our growing love for and excitement over Canadian food? Something that reflects a drive towards greater self-sufficiency?

Its agricultural labour council thinks so. So do I.

“I think one of the big benefits is meeting up with your neighbour and being able to talk about what is going on in your fields. Everyone’s operation is a little bit different, but you can gain experience by talking to people who have been through a drought before or at least a similar experience,” she said.

In Brant County, OMAFRA scientists and researchers from the University of Guelph will be on hand to share the science side of things, and engage in conversation with local farmers.

In Elmira, at Floraview Farms from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be soil demonstrations and information on how to keep crops going.

Actually, the farce is definitely necessary Drayton Entertainment plays up the slapstick in Unnecessary Farce at the Dunfield Theatre in Cambridge WHITNEY NEILSON DRAYTON ENTERTAINMENT’S LATEST PRODUCTION is a farce to be reckoned with.

Playwright Paul Slade Smith’s Unnecessary Farce opens at Dunfield Theatre in Cambridge next week after a successful run in Grand Bend earlier this summer.

The comedy follows two bumbling police officers, Eric Sheridan and Billie Dwyer, who pursue the allegedly shady Mayor Meekly to a hotel where he’s meeting his accountant, Karen Brown. For some reason, her clothes can’t seem to stay on.

As the cops attempt to videotape the meeting from the other room, it’s safe to say their undercover operation doesn’t go as planned.

“We have one room, that’s where the cops are, and the other room we call the sting room, that’s where they try to trap the mayor, and then they run between them. To try to remember these two identical rooms where you are, there’s eight doors, and trying to remember which door needs to be open, closed, locked – because they do lock and it’s important – that took a lot of time,” explained director J. Sean Elliott.

The result is a whole lot of fun for the audience.

Kristen Peace plays Billie Dwyer, which involves plenty of physical comedy like crawling on the floor and

getting tied up. He says she does a fantastic job of bringing the funny. Eric Sheridan is played by David Leyshon, Ted Simonett takes the role of Mayor Meekly and Ralph Small is Todd, the professional hitman.

If you were fortunate to see Drayton’s production of Anything Goes earlier this year you’ll recognize two of the lead roles. Jayme Armstrong plays Karen Brown and Keith Savage is Agent Frank, the town hall’s head of security.

Valerie Boyle reprises her role as the mayor’s wife, Mary Meekly, a character she first portrayed in 2015 for Stage West’s production of Unnecessary Farce in Calgary. Elliott also directed that production.

“This is an absolutely fantastic made-to-order part for Jayme and I pursued her with Alex [Mustakas] and worked hard to get her. And she really wanted to do it because she’s mostly doing musicals,” Elliott said.

This gives her the chance to rest her voice a bit and be part of a well-written contemporary American farce, something that’s hard to come by these days, he adds.

“And Keith is just a national treasure. He is such a pro and his physical energy is unlike anybody I’ve ever known. He’s not 25 and in this play he’s jumping over beds, he’s rolling over things, it’s incredible,” Elliott said.

He says the whole cast has been a pleasure to work with because they understand comedy, and he assures audiences it’ll be a treat to watch. When the whole theatre is howling with laughter, it doesn’t feel like work at all.

“The culture right now is everybody’s really into musicals and I also work in musicals, I am obsessed with musicals but you don’t see as many plays anymore, it’s mostly mu-

sicals. This is a chance to go see a great play that is just a superb cast and I just can’t recommend it highly enough on the silliness scale,” Elliott said.

The play premiered in 2006 and has been produced more than 200 times all over the world since then. The New York playwright is also an actor and is on Broadway right now with Finding Neverland.

It’s a show Elliott is particularly proud of and he’s looking forward to seeing it run at Dunfield Theatre for

the next three weeks.

“It really is one of the most delightful comedies that’s going right now and if you enjoy putting your brain in neutral and just going on a ride, it’s the play for you. I love it. It’s the kind of thing I work on and the audiences just go crazy; they’re just restless by the end, and they should be. It should be like you get on a ride at Canada’s Wonderland and get off the other end and go ‘phew, oh my goodness,’ and that’s what this is like,” Elliott said.

Passed away peacefully at Wellington Terrace in Fergus on Friday, August 5, 2016, at the age of 90 years. Reta (Schweitzer) Bott was the beloved wife of the late Harry Bott (2010). Dear mother of Linda and Brian Hastie, Dale and Rhonda Bott, and the late Stephen Bott (2014). Loving grandmother of Melissa (David) Lawrence; Scott (Jillian) Hastie, Jenna and Lauren Bott; and Alexandra Bott. Proud great-grandmother of Bailey and Emily Lawrence; Marshall and Maddyn Hastie. Lu Ann and Graham Snyder, along with grandson Reed Snyder, presented the Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship in memory of their son to four deserving scholars on Tuesday night at their home: Cassandra Tuffnail, Tyler Moser, Zac Coulter and Rob Kohli.

[WHITNEY NEILSON / THE OBSERVER] WHITNEY NEILSON THE OLD ADAGE THAT “something good always comes out of something bad” rang true on Tuesday night as Lu Ann and Graham Snyder awarded four local students with the Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship in memory of their son and local hockey star.

Dan rose through the Elmira hockey ranks from the Woolwich Minor Hockey Association to the Elmira Sugar Kings, before moving on to the

OHL where he played for the Owen Sound Attack.

He was part of the IHL champion Orlando Solar Bears in 2000-01, and the AHL champion Chicago Wolves in 2001-02 before joining the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers.

In October of 2003, Dan succumbed to injuries suffered in a car accident.

The Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship Fund was created shortly after through donations from NHL players, along with an auction of game-worn jerseys by the National Hockey

League Players’ Association. More than $49,720 has been awarded to local students and athletes since its inception.

Now in its 13th year, scholarships of $1,200 were given to four familiar faces: Zac Coulter, Rob Kohli, Tyler Moser and Cassandra Tuffnail.

“We’re honoured to have Dan’s name on this,” Graham said of the trophy that has the recipients’ names engraved on it and can usually be found at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.

“He was very much a community-minded young man. He did a lot of things, I’m reading through your résumés that you sent in, I see a lot of that there, a lot of giving back to the community and we’re very thankful for that.”

Kohli and Coulter both received the awards in the Elmira Sugar Kings category, while Moser’s was given for the Woolwich Minor Hockey category and Tuffnail’s was for the Woolwich Community Open category.

try to explain what the human chin might be good for. Can you hazard a guess?

A. Anthropologists point

out that apes and our Homo ancestors are chinless. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The chin sticks out, so to speak, as a distinguishing human trait,â&#x20AC;? says Jeff Wheelwright in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Discoverâ&#x20AC;? magazine. But how or why it evolved is unclear. Did the tongue muscles during the repetitive action of speech trigger an anchoring of bone? Or did the mechanical stresses of eating do it?

Yet if the chin evolved to aid chewing or speech, it should be the same size in men and women, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not (â&#x20AC;&#x153;sexual dimorphismâ&#x20AC;? is the norm). Rather, chins do figure prominently in facial attractiveness: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Females seemingly prefer men with a broad or square chin, males fancy females with a narrow chin.â&#x20AC;? Call this the â&#x20AC;&#x153;comeâ&#x20AC;&#x201C; hitherâ&#x20AC;? chin.

As Timothy Bromage of the NYU College of Dentistry argues, â&#x20AC;&#x153;just because the chin didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t evolve for some grand purpose doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it valueless. For one, it helps us maintain an open airway by giving room to the voice box and tongue.â&#x20AC;? Also, the chin is a secondary consequence of adaptations that make

us human, including upright posture and our large brains.

In other words, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the chin is a small moving part in a grand scheme,â&#x20AC;? Wheelwright concludes.

Q. Why are there far fewer â&#x20AC;&#x153;bugsâ&#x20AC;? this summer than you might think?

A. Not just this summer but every summer, since â&#x20AC;&#x153;many critters blamed for bug bites are not technically bugs at all,â&#x20AC;? including mosquitoes, ticks, flies, fleas, lice, chiggers, mites, says Gemma Tarlach in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Discoverâ&#x20AC;? magazine. For all you nitpicky types, bedbugs are â&#x20AC;&#x153;trueâ&#x20AC;? bugs of the order â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hemiptera,â&#x20AC;? and researchers have recently discovered that these â&#x20AC;&#x153;little guys have evolved the largest array of special proteins

to-be that feel mosquitoes target them more than non-pregnant women, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re right, in fact twice as likely, says the research. Several reasons have been offered, including pregnant womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s increased body temperature. So donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget the mosquito repellent.

Coulter played for the Sugar Kings for the past four seasons and was an assistant captain this season. He set Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League records for most games played and total points accumulated. He’ll suit up for the University of Waterloo Wolves men’s hockey team this fall, where he’ll be taking an honours in recreation and leisure studies.

Kohli also spent the past four seasons with the Elmira team and took on the role of captain for the 2015-16 season after one season as an assistant captain. He’s sticking close to home and heading to Conestoga College to study electrical engineering next month.

Elmira District Secondary School grad Moser represented Canada in the World Junior U18 Ball Hockey Championships earlier this year where they brought home gold.

Rob Kohli and Zac Coulter both received the Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship in the Elmira Sugar Kings category. Sunflower and Apricot Granola Bars 1-3/4 cups rolled oats 2/3 cup sunflower seeds 1/3 cup wheat germ 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1/2 tsp. salt 2/3 cup chopped dried apricots 2/3 cup local honey 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 1/3 cup sunflower oil

Place honey, sugar and oil in a saucepan on low.

Stir constantly and heat until the sugar has dissolved.

In a large bowl, place oats, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, ginger, salt and apricots.

Pour the honey mixture over the dry ingredients and mix well so the ingredients are coated in the honey.

Line a 9x9 pan with parchment paper and spoon the prepared mixture into the pan.

Bake in oven at 350˚F for

25 minutes until the edges are golden. (This may take longer depending on your oven.)

Remove from the oven and allow it to cool.

Cut into bars, wrap in plastic wrap and store in an airtight container (or freeze for future enjoyment).

Rick Weiss spoke on behalf of the Dan Snyder Memorial Foundation and the K-W Community Foundation.

“I don’t say this every year, this was tough. This year was absolutely amazing. This was the toughest year, the most applicants and the most quality applicants,” Weiss said.

He recalled in 2003 when the Snyders were invited to a New Year’s Eve game by Steve Yzerman between the Thrashers and the Detroit Red Wings a few months after Dan’s death, but they called Weiss and asked he and his wife to go on their behalf.

“They had 37 patches sewn on all the jerseys.

Long story short, after the game Avery and I worked with the NHL Players’ Association and we scooped all the jerseys off their backs,” Weiss said.

They ended up raising about US$83,000 for the auction, which was around $100,000 Canadian.

They only disperse the scholarships from the

income generated by that money.

A goalie for the Winnipeg Jets will wear Dan’s number, 37, for the upcoming season. They called the Snyders to ask for permission, which they appreciated. The Atlanta Thrashers were sold to True North Sports & Entertainment in 2011 and became the Winnipeg Jets.

“We’ve had a lot of satisfaction from being able to do this each and every year,” Graham said.

Weiss notes eventually the NHLPA will take over the scholarship which is under the direction of the K-W Community Foundation, to ensure it continues to honour Dan’s legacy.

“One thing that will never leave probably a lot of our lives is the scene from the funeral home to the church of the road with all the little guys and the ladies with the sticks,” Weiss recalled of Dan’s funeral in Elmira. “I still get choked up when I think about that, just tapping on the ground as the hearse was rolling by.”

“They brought us up to travel and go where we want and feel we want to be – that’s where it’s taken us.”

She and Dan don’t have any plans to move to Ontario any time soon but she says they’ll always be back to visit.

She recommends anyone who’s given the chance to live in northern Canada to give it a try.

“You’ll be pretty sure in the first month or so if you enjoy it. If you have an open mind you can see it in the summertime in the beautifulness and in the wintertime the frigid cold, and just enjoy the out-

And most northern folks would love for more people to visit, while a select few would like them to stay be-

cause they like Whitehorse nice and small, just the way it is.

“We all want you to have a piece of it and love it as much as we do. But it’s nice to come home and realize this is just as beautiful, just in a different way,” she said.
