Public remains cautious about biogas plant More than 100 people turn up looking for answers

ost of the 100-plus people who showed up Tuesday night at an open house at Lions Hall in Elmira weren’t there to support a biogas facility in town. Some came out looking for information, perhaps not convinced one way or another, but the feeling was akin to every other meeting involving plans to use waste to generate electricity: skeptical.

Many of the comments heard in the hall revolved around the potential odours emanating from a plant that would convert organic waste to methane, which would in turn power a generator.

“I’m in favour of green energy, but this is taking too big a chance. There’s a history in Elmira that clouds the issue here,” said High Street resident Ed Speers, an organizer behind the Bio Fuel Citizen’s Committee (BFCC), launched last year by neighbours of the proposed plant on Martin’s Lane.

His comments echoed those of many nearby residents, who point to a history of odour-emitting industries in the area as the number-one reason to put the operation somewhere else.

Biogas: Questions linger about energy-generating facility in Elmira

That history – the north end of Elmira has been home to issues related to, among others, the former Rothsay rendering operation, the Uniroyal/Chemtura chemical plant and the pet food mill – has residents expressing their worries to Woolwich Township, noted Coun. Sandy Shantz.

Although the project has been discussed since 2008, the public still has many questions, reservations and misconceptions, as evidenced by the comments. That’s why the open house can be use-

ful, allowing people to ask for those answers, explained Chuck Martin, president of Bio-En Power Inc., which plans to build the facility.

“Some people have suggested we should build it away from town – out in the country somewhere – but we can’t do that.”

Having spent a year and half looking for a location, the company found that all of the requirements quickly eliminated many spots.

In order to work, the facility needs to be located where it can tap into the electrical grid, close to customers for its steam heat and near to sources of materials.

And it’s the province that will have the final determination whether or not the project goes ahead. Under the Green Energy Act approved last year, municipal governments no longer have a say in the decision-making process.

This week’s public open house was part of the Ontario government’s new plan for streamlining the application process for alternative-energy projects.

The Austrian technology proposed for the Bio-En facility uses

an anaerobic digester to convert organic material into biogas and fertilizer. It will be fed by waste material, including livestock manure, food waste, used cooking oils and other fats and the like. A diesel generator converted to work with methane will generate electricity to be sold back into the grid, while steam heat produced could be sold to neighbours such as the pet food mill.

The $12-million facility would generate 2.8 megawatts of renewable electricity – enough to power 2,200 homes – and 3.4 mW of heat.

> Splash park gets $75,000 for OTF The Wellesley and District Lions Club has reached the 75 per cent mark in their splash park fundraising campaign, thanks to a $75,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Two years ago, the local Lions Club was approached with the idea of a splash park facility by a group of young parents and enthusiastically embraced the idea. The club plans to cover the ongoing cost of the park’s maintenance, so that the facility can be offered free of charge to the community.

This grant will be used towards the purchase of water features, an underground holding tank and a water recirculation system. The community groups continue to fundraise locally and installation of the facility will proceed in the fall of 2010.

esearch shows a clear trend happening in Waterloo Region: every year, more people are buying food directly from local farmers and processors than the previous year. Demand is rising steadily, and new businesses are springing up to match.

Evidence of that change will be on display during the A Taste of Woolwich event Apr. 12, one of April’s Healthy Communities Month activities.

Woolwich is seeing a growing number of farms in the area that sell to the public, as well as farm stores and CSAs (community shared agriculture). Market ven-

dors, restaurants, caterers and retail stores that sell local food are booming as well.

But why the sudden interest in buying local?

“The major reason is a growing awareness about where our food comes from,” explained Ellen Desjardins, a public health nutritionist with the Region of Waterloo. “People are genuinely shocked to learn how much we are dependent upon imported food, and how far that food travels from all over the world.”

Desjardins has completed research carried out within the region that found many participants are concerned local farms are in jeopardy because the same foods they

produce – such as apples, tomatoes or strawberries – are being shipped in from other countries to sell at cheaper prices.

“An astonishing number of people are telling me, ‘I buy local because I want to support our local farmers.

I ask where the garlic come from, and if it’s China, I won’t buy it.’”

In addition, the movement towards eating locally-produced foods means that more people are making healthier choices. People are starting to think about where the food came from. Who grew it? What’s in it?

“There is evidence that people are eating more healthily because they are

thinking more about what they’re eating – it’s not just food on their plate,” Desjardins explained. “Although the actual items might not be necessarily any healthier, the thought process that goes into choosing local food makes people pick healthier options.”

And lastly, buying locally might just be good for the soul.

“From a psychological perspective, eating locally allows people to feel more connected to their rural community which enhances sense of belonging and community,” explained Desjardins. “People are not just

Under the Immunization

of School Pupils Act, Region of Waterloo Public Health is required to collect immunization records for all children attending school in the Region. If students are missing the required records or legal exemption, they can

be suspended from school for up to 20 days or until the documentation is received.

Enforcement for elementary school students will start May 11.

“Our goal is not to suspend students. Our goal is

to ensure we have immunization records,” said Lesley Rintche, manager of vaccine preventable diseases at the public health department.

Wellesley council has agreed to lend up to $30,000 to the Heidelberg-St. Clements Optimist Club to complete construction of an outdoor pavilion in St. Clements.

The service club has raised $22,500 and put in footings, foundations and a reinforced concrete slab, exhausting its funds. The loan would allow the club to complete the project this summer.

The loan is to be paid back within three years.

Although the Elmira biogas project has yet to receive provincial approval, the facility is now cleared to connect to the power grid.

Thursday’s announcement included contract offers for almost 2,500 megawatts of renewable energy, said Ontario's Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Brad Duguid. The new suppliers are part of the largest green energy investment of its kind in Canadian history.

The 184 projects announced this week will generate enough energy to power 600,000 homes. Located in communities across the province, the total 694 contract offers to date are expected to create 20,000 direct and indirect green jobs and attract about $9 billion in private sector investment.

Wellesley seeking part-time curator for historical items Katie Edmonds

T

he volume of historical material makes hiring a part-time curator an idea whose time has come, says the Wellesley Township Heritage and Historical Society. The group wants to spend the money at the Heritage Room, located in the old school on Henry Street in Wellesley Village.

“We have started to receive all kinds of extra artifacts being donated to the room, and we need to start to document those and organize them,” said Ron Hackett, the organization’s chair.

Council this week approved putting up to $285 per month for the next six months towards the hiring of a curator, with the money to come from the Koehler estate fund, which was left to the township for historical society purposes.

In 2007, the township received a bequest from Jack Koehler, a Kitchener man whose g reat-g randparents had settled in Wellesley Township. The township received an initial payment of $340,000, and then another $15,000 when the estate was settled.

The new curator

would work only two days per month, five hours per day at a rate of $19 per hour. Training for the new employee would be facilitated

by Derek Cooke and Lian Goodall, the curators who originally organized the Heritage Room but are not able to continue working there as they are planning to move, explained Hackett.

The responsibilities of the curator may include cataloguing new acquisitions and donations to the collection, ensuring the proper storage of photographs and archival objects takes place, cleaning and preventa-

tive maintenance of the collection, developing and installing new exhibits and other duties

as assigned.

The position will be advertised on the Township of Wellesley’s

website and qualified applicants who submit proposals will be interviewed at a later date.

“We may not be able to eat the foods fresh all year round, but

there are several ways to store items, either by freezing, canning or pickling those items.”

This Monday, visitors to A Taste of Woolwich in St. Jacobs will be able to purchase and learn about local food from local farmers, enjoy tasty samples from local chefs and restaurants, watch cooking demonstrations and take part in fun kids’ activities.

The event is one of many happening during Healthy Communities Month, which offers a host of activities

designed to promote not just the physical health of residents, but the environmental and economic health as well.

Big goal for the Big Bike Joni Miltenburg

T

he Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Waterloo Region office is looking for some big bike riders – not large cyclists, but people interested in raising funds and pedaling the 29-seat Big Bike.

The Big Bike is an annual fundraiser that takes place across Canada. Last year 40,000 riders pedaled in more than 200 communities and raised $7 million for heart and stroke research.

Heart and stroke disease has been steadily declining over the past 40 years – down 70 per cent between 1956 and 2002 – but it’s still the leading cause of death in Canada. In 2005, car-

diovascular disease accounted for 31 per cent of deaths nationally, according to Statistics Canada.

Courtney Gies, coordinator for the event in Waterloo Region, said the office is aiming for 90 teams in Waterloo Region this year, up from 81 last year. This is the eighth year teams from the region have taken part in the event.

They’re asking that each team raise at least $1,500, although there’s no maximum; Gies noted that some teams raise as much as $12,000 or $13,000.

Last year the Big Bike raised $230,000 in the region. The money raised stays within Waterloo Region, going toward research and

health promotion and advocacy.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation is currently funding four research projects at the University of Waterloo: Dr. James Rush’s investigation into chemical factors and inflammation as it relates to high blood pressure and exercise; Dr. Robert Hegele’s examination of gene mapping to learn about the pathways and enzymes involved in high blood pressure; Dr. Eric Roy’s research into apraxia, the inability to carry out motor movements, caused by stroke; Dr. David Spafford’s structure-function analyses of drug interactions with L-type cal-

cium channels.

On the day of the event, each 29-member team, along with a driver from the foundation, will pedal the Big Bike along a two- or three-kilometre route.

Rides will be hosted by restaurants that will provide heart-healthy snacks and drinks.

This year rides will be taking place on May 28, June 7,8,10,11,15,16 and 17. There are no rides in Woolwich, but there are two leaving from Waterloo: one from Boston Pizza on King Street North, and one from East Side Marios on King Street.

SJK student rakes in awards at science fair Katie Edmonds

ackenzie Carter has been working on his science fair project since last summer. His dedication paid off this week at the WaterlooWellington Science and Engineering Fair. The Grade 12 student at St. John’s Kilmarnock School (SJK) in Breslau took home the event’s top prize, the Award of Excellence, as well as a gold medal for Senior Engineering, an Award of Merit and a best-ofdivision award Carter’s project, a STOL ’n Lift, is a device that allows aircrafts to take off and land in shorter distances – STOL is short takeoff and landing.

The Waterloo-Wellington Science and Engineering Fair is an annual event that brings together the best of the young scientific minds in the region. Winners at the regional fair, including Carter, will go on to the Canada-wide science fair. As well,

Each year more than 300 projects are submitted by 350 students from about 30 different public, separate and independent schools in Waterloo Region and Wellington County.

The projects were placed into one of five divisions – biotechnology, Earth science, engineering science, life

science, or physical science. Within each of these divisions the projects are further divided into one of three categories, according to the grades of the participants – junior (Grades 7 and 8), intermediate (Grades 9 and 10) or senior (Grades 11, and 12). Students from Grade 6 have periodically attended the fair with demonstration projects.

More than 120 judges

from local schools, universities, colleges, businesses and industries volunteer their time to judge the projects and provide valuable feedback to the students.

The projects and students are judged according to a national standard that includes the scientific method, creativity, organization, research, background knowledge, visual impact and a written summary of

the project.

At SJK, their biennial science fair is a largescale event that brings in about 50 judges from surrounding universities, colleges and local industries to evaluate the offerings of students in Grades 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12. Ian Hornsby, assistant head of school at SJK, facilitates the fair each year and keeps an eye on certain projects throughout their development – all leading up to this week’s regional event.

“You are never really quite sure what you are going to see at a science fair,” said Hornsby.

“But the kids continue to amaze me. I am always taken by surprise by the knowledge that the students have, and what they are able to communicate to the judges.”

Carter is one of 17 students from SJK who competed in the event.

Additionally in Woolwich, nine students from St. Jacobs Public School participated, alongside another nine students from St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School in Elmira.

“This really is a great event,” added Hornsby.

“The creativity blows me away every year.”

April is for focusing on the community's health

A

pril, Healthy Communities Month in Woolwich, provides a plethora of examples of how to live lighter on the land, enriching ourselves and our environment in the process.

On Apr. 24, for instance, volunteers will be fanning out across the township in a clean-up effort, essentially picking up after the thoughtless people who litter wantonly. If past years are any indication, they’ll find all sorts of discarded items. More than just candy wrappers and pop cans – perhaps written off as childish negligence – the long list of junk found along roadways, in parks and other public places reveals deliberate intent. A stray coffee cup or scrap of paper may have been caught in the wind, an old tire (or, more likely, 50 old tires) did not arrive on its own – somebody was bypassing the proper disposal process.

Such garbage is not only unsightly, it is potentially hazardous: people should be able to use the parks and trails without worrying about what they might step on. Worse still, some people are not above dumping toxins such as used oil and household cleaners.

Environmental arguments aside, such dumping is completely inconsiderate. Our shared spaces are just that: shared. Everyone who dumps trash, even if it just that coffee cup or candy wrapper, is in fact leaving the mess for somebody else to clean up.

Anyone who has ever walked along a roadside ditch, for instance, knows just how much garbage can accumulate in such places; it’s visible even from your car as you drive along, thus the need for something like the AdoptA-Road program.

As unsightly as it is, however, such

litter is only the tip of the environmental iceberg: The real damage comes from the stuff we can’t see, or collectively gather up for proper disposal.

As environmentalists stress as we prepare to mark Earth Day Apr. 22, the number-one issue remains climate change. Canada, of course, has a poor track record on this file, promising little and doing less, arguing any targets we set would be a drop in the bucket if the big players – the U.S., China, India and Russia – refuse to play ball.

Perhaps it’s time to move past the rhetoric and actually start doing something. Even climate change skeptics can’t argue the fact we’re polluting the only home we have. Measures designed to improve the environment can only help our health and quality of life down the road.

house gas emissions often cite economic reasons, saying we’d kill the economy by cutting back on energy production and manufacturing.

This stance ignores many realities.

First off, resources such as oil and coal are finite – we’re going to run out of them eventually. Also finite is the planet’s carrying capacity for the pollution we generate; we used to think dumping waste into the river/lake/ ocean made it go away, but we now know better; what we do to the Grand, for instance, ends up downstream in Brantford and points south.

One way or another, we’ll have to change the way we live today. Whether we choose how to do that, or the planet makes the decision for us remains to be seen.

The need for each of us to tread more lightly on the earth is the real take-away message this month.

Cathedrals and mosques tied up in history's battles T

here was an unpleasant incident in Corboba cathedral last week. It was the world’s second-biggest mosque until the Spanish reconquest of the city in the 13th century, and a group of 120 Muslim tourists from Austria was visiting it. Suddenly, half a dozen of them began to pray – and the security guards intervened and told them to stop. They refused, so the police were called.

Two young men from the group still would not stop, there was a scuffle between them and the police, and they were arrested. One security guard and one policeman, we are told, were “slightly injured,” but one suspects that they did not need time off work to recover. (“... and then the accused struck me right in the fist with his face, Your Honour, causing this cut on my ring finger.”)

The bishop’s office offers a more lurid account of the incident, in which the tourists “provoked in a pre-planned fashion what was a deplorable episode of violence.” The spokeswoman for the National Police, Rosa Ortiz, who may have seen a bit more real violence than the bishop, said it was just a “shoving match” between the police and the two men, who were aged (surprise!)

And that’s all that happened. But you just know, given the delicate state of relations between Muslims and Christians in this time, that the blogs and websites that obsess about such things are going to make a big deal

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER out of it. Especially since the Roman Catholic bishop of Cordoba, Demetrio Fernandez, recently reaffirmed the ban on Muslims praying in the building.

What he actually said was: “The shared use of the cathedral by Catholics and Muslims would not contribute to the peaceful coexistence of the faiths.” It sounds very stuffy and old-fashioned, but I think he’s right.

Because I keep thinking about what would happen if a bunch of Christian tourists went into the Ayasofya mosque in Istanbul and tried to perform some sort of Christian ceremony.

Ayasofya was known as Hagia Sofia Cathedral (and the city was known as Constantinople) until the Ottoman conquest in 1453. For a thousand years it was the largest cathedral in the world, but Mehmet II, the Ottoman emperor who finally breached the city’s walls, had it converted to a mosque. The bells, altar and iconostasis were removed and replaced by a mihrab and minbar, the Christian mosaics were plastered over, and four minarets were added at the exterior corners.

That’s how things were done in

those days. The borders between Christendom and Islam moved back and forth a lot during the thousandyear struggle between the new faith and the slightly older one, and when either side gained new territory or recovered lost lands, it immediately put its stamp on them.

Since Islam’s first wave of expansion almost exclusively involved the conquest of formerly Christian countries, many of the great mosques of the Arab world outside Arabia are built on the remains of Christian churches – except al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, of course, which is built on what remains of the Jewish Second Temple. (And under that are a few traces of Solomon’s Temple, and under them, in all likelihood, are the foundations of some even older pagan temple.)

The great mosque that is now Cordoba cathedral was built on the ruins of an 8th-century Christian church, and you’d probably find some stones from an earlier Roman temple under that: people build their places of worship in the same places, over and over again.

But once they have changed hands, the only sensible thing to do is to accept it.

There are too many fanatics around: we are not yet at the point where sharing makes sense.

It would be nice if history were over: if we were all grown-ups now, and we could share this church or that mosque without conflict. But I

Feds chose wrong path in scrapping retrofit program T

he cheapest and most efficient energy is the energy you don’t need. That’s the rationale behind retrofitting your home – upgrading doors, windows and insulation, for instance. Or perhaps for a new car: double your gas mileage, cut your gasoline costs in half.

The arguments, both economic and environmental, are sound.

That’s what makes the federal government’s decision to scrap the popular ecoEnergy Retrofit program all the more confusing. Stephen Harper says he’s in favour of combating greenhouse gas emissions, but then his government turns around and kills a program that actually helps in that battle.

Residents should be wary of biogas plant To the Editor, About the prospect of a biogas plant for Elmira, there are some things that I think should be considered when people think of how to respond to this issue.

A number of years ago (2001, likely) I had the opportunity to visit a biogas plant in Newmarket, a plant very similar in nature to the one proposed by Bio-En for Elmira. The process they used, anaerobic digestion, and the material they handled and the process they used to handle the material, as near as I can tell from available documents, were similar to that proposed by Bio-En. They also used a bio-filter as Bio-En is proposing. The most significant memory I have of my visit there is the smell of garbage everywhere.

In fact the smell was very strong a kilometre away, as I noticed several times when I was in Newmarket.

I believe this plant has since been shut down.

Secondly, the people who propose to build and operate this facility are proud of the fact that they have been working together for a long time, and indeed they have. During that long relationship they have operated more than one project in Elmira that has caused grief to the community, often from terrible odours, and they have resisted repeated requests to correct the problems.

So we have a project that has

every potential to be a real stinker being constructed by people who, in the past, have demonstrated that they don’t mind stinking up Elmira.

What aggravates things in my mind, and to others I’ve spoken to, is that the group stands to make all the profit of this venture, while the area residents take all the risk.

Whatever problems there may be with traffic, odour and noise, the plant will continue to operate, the waste will continue to be trucked in and the electricity will go to the grid: the profits keep coming in.

However, the area residents are left to deal with the problems and consequences: lower property values, the loss of the use of the outdoors in their neighbourhood, and the battle to get corrections made.

We have been assured over and over that technology will eliminate all the problems; everything will be fine, just like in Germany. My response to Mr. Martin was to suggest that, if they are so sure everything will be fine, a trust fund should be set up with a significant amount of money, put in by Bio-En, and an agreement reached that would compensate local residents if problems did occur. It might convince people in the area that Bio-En is serious about being responsive to the community concerns.

A professor in the University of Waterloo’s Department of Geography and Environmental Management, he’s involved with the Residential Energy Efficiency Project (REEP).

The organization performs energy audits and makes recommendations to homeowners about how to make their dwellings more energy efficient.

The announcement that there would be no more funding after next March – only those with audits underway prior to the end of last month will qualify for grants – has REEP trying to determine what comes next. REEP had typically been doing 1,000 evaluations a year.

With the government incentives, that number doubled.

“It’s causing a short-term crisis because of the uncertainty,” says Parker, adding agencies don’t know how this will affect a provincial program that matched federal contributions.

In scrapping the program, the Canadian government is swimming against the global tide.

“This is the direct opposite of the direction other major governments are going. There’s a global trend supporting these retrofits. It was by far the most effective way of reducing carbon outputs.”

The benefits of retrofitting are hardly a new idea. These measures are tried and true.

Amory Lovins has been writing about this for years. He’s made the argument, backing it up with numbers, that it would be cheaper and much more beneficial for governments and utilities to pay for home retrofits, including buying new energy-efficient appliances, than to invest in dubious megaprojects such as nuclear reactors.

At the Rocky Mountain Institute in Colorado, where Lovins had been a lone voice in the wilderness for three decades, researchers focus on the market-driven arguments for going green. They’ve long espoused the cost savings of retrofitting homes and going with new technologies rather than building still more centralized power plants. As a bonus, the work provides far more employment (for tradespeople, suppliers and the like) and spreads the wealth around to every community, rather than putting it in the hands of a few.

How’s that for real stimulus spending? Sounds like a much better idea than bailing out banks and profligate corporations.

Lovins’ decentralized plan, what he called the “soft path,” was designed to counter earlier claims that we would have to build power plants at an exponential rate to meet projected demand, the so-called “hard path.”

In response, Lovins invented the concept of “negawatts,” so that utilities and governments could compare the cost of conservation measures against the cost of increasing power production.

Negawatts represent power saved from one application that is made available to another application.

For example, a compact fluorescent light bulb uses much less energy than a standard incandescent bulb to put out a similar amount of light.

Replacing one 100 watt bulb with one 13-watt compact fluorescent therefore “generates” 87 negawatts of saved energy to use somewhere else.

Applying this philosophy to the built environment provides a tremendous payoff. As Parker notes, the older housing stock provides the most chance of improvement, but much of what is built even today is far less efficient than it could be.

Figures compiled by the Rocky Mountain Institute show just how important better buildings could be in the effort to reduce energy demand. Buildings consume 48 per cent of all energy – 76 per cent of all electricity –and are responsible for almost half of all GHG emissions; the built environment produces about 40 per cent of landfill waste, and uses about 40 per cent of virgin materials; existing buildings in the U.S., for example, total approximately 300 billion square feet; every year five billion square feet of new space is built while another five billion square feet is renovated – by 2035, approximately 75 per cent of the built environment in the U.S. will be new or renovated.

The latter figures show why elevating the standards today – and having government programs to provide incentives – would have a big impact on the energy efficiency down the road, a path unlike the direction taken in cancelling the ecoEnergy Retrofit program.

Woolwich council got bad advice about from Humane Society about exotic animals To the Editor, Regarding the decision about the exotic animal auction, I was quite upset with council that night. Their half-hour argument trying to read the names of the animals, and then debate which animals are and are not banned showed that they are no experts in this matter.

The other sad fact is that they went with the K-W Humane Society’s opinion – and they are not

experts either.

I lived in Kitchener for more than 20 years and had an arrangement with the humane society and the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo that allowed me to keep exotics. They were not familiar with many of the animals I kept or had worked with.

I had to educate them a few times as to what I had and obtain letters of reference from University of Guelph experts to correct them on

one species they mistakenly thought was some deadly threat to mankind.

Councillors wanted these animals to stay in the wild. Why is an armadillo or otter to stay in the wild, but I can have a pet beaver or capybara right in Elmira? I can own venomous animals in Woolwich far worse than anything banned, but these were missed, most likely because the people who wrote the law did not consult with proper experts.

Soon after the humane society gave me “exemption,” I offered them my phone and email information as I lived five minutes away from their location so that I could give them advice if they had anything exotic turn up. I also put myself on a contact list from the Toronto Humane Society. I have never received a single call or email to date. Obviously

Dyer: Best to keep religion out of some controversial historic sites > CONTINUED FROM PG. 09 know Christians who think that Islam is “the Devil’s religion,” and that it is trying to take over the world. And I know many Muslims who cannot see that the Crusades and the Reconquista were Christian counter-offensives to recover lost lands, not unprovoked attacks on Islam.

So everybody is a victim in their

own minds, and the historical resentments are only a millimetre below the skin in many people, and it would be a really bad idea to provide a place where those resentments could fester and grow. If you allow Islamic religious services in Cordoba cathedral, for example, or Christian services in the Ayasofya mosque, you know exactly the sort of extremists and obsessives that it would attract.

Except that Ayasofya isn’t a mosque any more. In 1935 the government of the Turkish republic turned it into a museum where NOBODY is allowed to perform religious ceremonies, and you could certainly count on a “shoving match” with the security guards, if not something more, if you tried.

It was a cathedral for a thousand years, it was a mosque for five hundred, and now it’s a museum. Full

stop.

That, perhaps, is the best solution for Cordoba cathedral and a few other high profile church-andmosques as well. Make them museums for everybody, not active places of worship for anybody, and the heat goes out of the situation: no more winners and losers. But the Spaniards are probably not ready for that yet. They were an occupied country for seven hundred years.

They also seem to think that the risk in the mammal population that carries rabies suddenly changes for exotics. Any animal captive-raised and given proper vaccines will still

fall in the same category as a dog or cat. Any animal in the wild still has only a 15 per cent chance of carrying rabies, be it an Ontario deer or an exotic.

The diseases associated with monkeys are indeed harmful, so any kept in zoos, pet shops or crossing any borders must be screened constantly – something most people aren’t ever tested for, but can also

carry and spread just as easily.

Large hooved animals in a field will also come into contact with more wild animals than small exotics kept indoors or in small wired enclosures. dumb people with animals out there, but why punish the responsible owners too? We would have to ban the sale of all pets and not just exotics if we wish to stop this. A pitbull or German shepherd in the wrong hands is far more dangerous than someone with an otter will ever be.

tarting this fall, Conestoga College will be expanding its aviation program to include pilot training on helicopters.

The college has signed a partnership agreement with Great Lakes Helicopter, which operates out of the Region of Waterloo International Airport, to offer the training. The program is modeled on a similar partnership between the college and the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre for training on fixed-wing aircraft.

Students who graduate from the program will have a diploma in aviation – general arts and sciences, as well as

a commercial helicopter pilot’s licence.

“We see a need for helicopter pilots and there are a limited number of opportunities for those pilots to get the training in Ontario,” said Gordon Greavette, chair of communication and liberal studies at Conestoga College.

The program is unique in the province, Greavette explained.

Canadore College in North Bay offers a oneyear helicopter training program, whose graduates receive a pilot preparedness certificate.

Students who graduate from Conestoga’s twoyear program will have their commercial pilot’s licence for helicopters

as well as a college diploma.

At the college, students will take courses in basic aviation, social sciences, humanities, math and science.

The training at Great Lakes Helicopter will cost $70,000, on top of the student’s college fees, explained Jo Anne Leyburne, general manager of Great Lakes.

Conestoga is accepting students to the program for September, but because it’s April and many have already decided what they’ll be studying, the college is promoting the program for September 2011.

Greavette said the college hopes to eventually build it up to eight or 10 students.

Farmers need to clearly state their beef O

ver the next two weeks you’ll see farm leaders at Queen’s Park and at the nation’s capital, trying to drum up support for what they call predictable, bankable farm programs.

They want a long-term, insurance-based support program into which they, the province and Ottawa all contribute, one they know will keep them afloat when times are tough, so they don’t have to keep going back to the well.

It’s a major effort. For the first time, they’ve joined hands to form a coalition across commodities and interests. By farmers’ own admission, that’s rare in agriculture.

Sometimes commodities and interests compete, or worse, and cooperation suffers.

This time, though, they say it’s

So last October, farmers came together for a new, united approach to address what they call the farm crisis – that is, the smothering combination of high costs, low returns and inadequate support.

They say expenses keep rising, food prices stay the same or get lower, foreign competition increases, and their share of the food dollar stagnates or drops. Consumers won’t pay the real cost of food, so

the coalition wants governments to kick in, if they consider a domestic food sector important.

And it is. Agri-food is the nation’s second-largest economic driver. Even if governments don’t find huge quantities of votes in farming, they find economic hope, which is not lost on the Ontario coalition.

So in keeping with the economic theme, the coalition, which calls itself the Ontario Agriculture Sustainability Coalition, decided to take a calm, conciliatory dollars-and-cents approach to government relations. No more tractor cavalcades buzzing around Queen’s Park. No animal carcasses or livestock showing up on politicians’ doorsteps. No blockades at the Toronto food terminal. No headline-grabbing, one-off activist stuff. That doesn’t solve anything anyway, and it doesn’t portray farmers as the business people they are.

Farmers say they’ll apply pressure in other ways, starting with strength in numbers. But at their inaugural town-hall style meeting in Stratford earlier this week, fewer than 300 farmers took part, by one estimate, despite significant advance publicity in the agricultural community.

Provincial and municipal politicians showed up, and coalition leaders were pleased with that. But the numbers didn’t demonstrate the kind of groundswell support that was hoped for.

I think part of the problem is the challenge presented by succinctly explaining the term sustainability, and creating a buzz around it. In society, it’s used by a lot of causes and it’s getting watered down. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if people mistook the Ontario coalition for an environmental lobby group.

Sustainability is a term often used to explain the motivation of those dedicated to natural resource preservation.

True, the environment is a pillar of farming, too. But that’s not what this coalition is about.

Now, they’re not alone with their sustainability perspective.

Pressure is on in the U.S. as well, by what’s called the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition. It claims to join together the voices of grassroots farm, food, conservation, and rural organizations from all regions of the country. And it says its purpose is to advocate for federal policies and programs supporting the long-term economic, social, and environmental sustainability of agriculture, natural resources, and rural communities.

That’s a broad brush. It’s hard to fashion a 30-second elevator conversation around what it stands for.

And while it’s lamentable that a whole movement, a whole industry must be summarized that way, that’s just the way it is.

Ontario’s rallying cry is Sustain Our Farms. Can they make that pop? We’ll see.

f Clint Rohr could give a few tips to someone wanting to try canoeing for the first time, he would tell them to make sure they have all of their safety equipment ready, learn how to get in and out of the boat properly, and thirdly, to find a sense of balance in the boat – and fast.

“Those last two are important if you don’t want

to end up in the river,” said Rohr with a laugh.

Rohr himself first pulled the paddle when he was about 16 years old – more than 40 years ago – and this month he will be sharing his love of the open water with whoever would like to join him as he leads the Canoe the Grand tour as part of Woolwich’s Healthy Communities Month.

This sandwich is going to be the life of the party W

hen not cooking fabulous fourcourse meals at our clients’ homes for interactive dinner parties, Jody and I are always looking to use up what is in our refrigerator, producing something that is homemade, delicious and can keep well or be frozen to take in the kid’s (or husband’s) lunch the next day. It is an economical way of eating, using up leftovers in a unique way.

From The Chef's Table Kirstie Herbstreit & Jody O'Malley We needed an idea for a ‘party’ sandwich to bring along to picnics, luncheons and brunches, and in the back of my mind I remembered this ‘rolled sandwich’ that was sold at a place I worked at in Calgary

many years ago. The name came to me soon afterwards, and our experimenting began.

Stromboli typically is a cross between a pizza and a calzone, filled with Italian meats and cheeses. Well, we had Black

Forest ham, some Swiss gruyere cheese and a jar of roasted red peppers on hand, so that is what we worked with. Jody began to make the dough (because she’s the one with the stand-up mixer!) and I began to chop.

You begin a Stromboli with a basic pizza or white bread dough; roll it out into a large rectangle, layer on your choice of fillings and then roll it up like a pinwheel. Leftovers are

great cold; served fresh from the oven with a salad, it's close to a gourmet supper.

The following is our favourite Stromboli.

Use your favourite

pizza dough recipe, or check out our website for a recipe and other variations. We find that the store-bought dough doesn’t have the elasticity of a fresh dough.

Ham and Cheese Stromboli Serves 6-8

> Pizza dough (enough to make 1 extra large pizza) > 2-3 tbsp whole grain mustard (we like Kozlik's Triple Crunch Mustard, available at Vincenzo’s)

> 250g (1/2 lb) thinly sliced Black Forest ham > 2 cups of grated Gruyere cheese > 1 small bunch of basil > 1/2 cup chopped roasted red peppers Roll or stretch out pizza dough on a lightly floured surface so that it is a large rectangle, approximately 16 by 18 inches; Using a spoon or spatula, spread mustard all over the dough; Next, layer ham slices, covering the surface of the dough, but leaving about a one-inch border; Sprinkle on cheese, basil and roasted red peppers; Starting at the widest side, roll up carefully forming a pinwheel; Transfer the Stromboli (you may need a

third hand here) to a parchment paper lined baking sheet*; Using a sharp knife, make small slits at the top of the Stromboli, about two inches apart; Bake in 425°F oven for 20-25 minutes, or until top is nicely golden brown. Don’t worry if some of the filling has leaked out (often this is the best part!); Allow to cool for 5 minutes before slicing into 1-2 inch slices, using a bread knife. *At this point, feel free to wrap well in plastic wrap and freeze.

he Elmira Sugar Kings might have lacked age and experience this season, but no one could question their determination and heart.

After an up-and-down season, the Kings hit their stride in the playoffs, eliminating the Listowel Cyclones and throwing a scare into Brantford, the defending champions.

No one really knew what to expect in September when the team moved into the new Dan Snyder Memorial Arena with a squad of young and largely unproven players. In the end, it was a season that

everyone could be proud of: the executive that oversaw the move to the new rink, the coaching staff that pulled the team together, and the players who rose to the challenge.

“For a young team, I think we did great to get by a round in the playoffs and to really open a lot of people’s eyes,” said general manager Keith Stewart.

Stewart noted that the team was looking to add some size this season, having got pushed around a bit last year. They iced a squad that was larger than average, but with only two 20-year-olds and three 19-year-olds on the roster. That rel-

“At times we looked really, really good and at other times you went, ‘oh my goodness, what are we doing?’” said head coach Geoff Haddaway. “But it was a matter of sticking with it and as hard as you can be on the guys, you have to tell them and show them that you believe in them and we can get through this if we do this together.”

Golden Eagles. In six matchups with Brantford during the regular season, Brantford won all six.

“I don’t know how many people told me ‘you’re playing Brantford and it’s going to be four and out,’” Stewart recounted. “We never did beat them during the year – there was no reason to believe that we’d be in that series – so I think we opened a lot of people’s eyes.”

game one, the coaching staff knew Listowel would get off to a quick start, and they did, going up 3-0 in the first half of the game.

That could have been a moment to throw in the towel and point to the team’s youth as an excuse, but the players were having none of it. The Kings were down 3-1 at the start of the third when Shane Smith – not normally a fighter – dropped the gloves and challenged Listowel’s captain, Eric Deckers.

That kind of old-school hockey isn’t something the coach encourages, but it sent a jolt through the Kings’ bench.

The trip’s path varies each year depending on a number of factors including weather conditions and water levels. This year’s lack of precipitation throughout the winter has meant that water levels are low on both the Conestogo and Grand rivers, conditions that can prove challenging for boaters, but Rohr is confident that the group will be able to manage.

This year’s tour will start in St. Jacobs and run for about two hours, ending up at Kaufman’s Flats in Waterloo. Transportation back to St. Jacobs has been arranged by Rohr.

Rohr lives in the heart of St. Jacobs, but spends some of his happiest times up at his family’s cottage near Muskoka. While there, he and his wife go out canoeing almost every evening.

“Those are some of my favourite times,” he recalled. “Spending time out on the water is so peaceful.”

Typically, the Canoe the Grand event hosts between eight and 10

people, from boating enthusiasts to novices.

It is required however, if someone wishes to participate, that they bring their own canoe or kayak as well as safety equipment. Last year, the trip had to be cancelled due to a bout of stormy weather, conditions which Rohr said he usually doesn’t mind.

“It’s a bit different when you’re leading a group though,” he noted. “All types of people come out on these trips – anywhere from expert canoeists to complete beginners – so I didn’t want to take them out if the conditions weren’t good.”

This year, however, he hopes that many people come out to the event simply to have a good time.

“If people come out and have a good experience with other canoeists, they might be motivated to do more of it on their own,” he said. “And getting some fresh air is never a bad thing.”

game five. This time the Kings battled back from a three-goal deficit to win 4-3 and force game six. Despite putting up a valiant fight, the team was eliminated in game six. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were an overtime game away from coming back to Elmira with the lead in the series,â&#x20AC;? Trio plans to bike across the country Joni Miltenburg

fter pedaling more than 200 kilometres from Vancouver to Seattle, most of the participants in the Ride to Conquer Cancer will stop for a well-earned rest. For three cyclists from Elmira, the journey will have just begun: they’ll be pedaling another 7,000 kilometres across Canada, finishing only when they can dip a front tire in the Atlantic Ocean.

Taking the battle against cancer in stride

The University of Alabama’s women’s wheelchair basketball team travelled to Denver this week to defend their national championship title.

The team, which includes Elmira’s Katie Harnock, was 33-3 this season and was the top seed going into the tournament. The team’s only losses this season were to men’s teams.

Seven of the 12 women on the team also play for their respective national teams. Harnock is one of four Canadians who will be vying for a fifth straight gold at the world championships this summer.

Wiens and Brandon Wiens are hoping to complete their cross-Canada journey in six or seven weeks, which will mean covering around 150 kilometres a day.

They were inspired by the Wiens’ older brother, Travis, who did a similar journey about three years ago. Bauman had the idea of doing it for a cause, and starting the trip with the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

pr. 25 marks the 31st annual Woolwich Great Ride ‘n Stride, a large-scale fundraising event in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. The start of April means the start of the Canadian Cancer Society’s fundraising push for 2010, and the warmer weather makes this an ideal time for residents to lace up their running shoes and get active for a good cause.

The Canadian Cancer Society Great Ride ‘n’ Stride is a non-competitive event where participants are encouraged to run, walk or bike a 4-km, 10-km or 20-km course.

This year’s Woolwich Great Ride ‘n Stride will again start at Elmira District Secondary School, then will follow Arthur Street north to the Kissing Bridge Trail and along the trail to either Floradale Road or Side Road 18 at Wallenstein, depending on how long you want to walk, run or bike.

“It’s a great event to get kids into the habit of participating in their community,” said Sarah Bradshaw, fundraising chair for the

I looked over to her nervously and paused dramatically once again, testing the wind by throwing sand in the air. I was about to answer, when it occurred to me that this was a heady responsibility that shouldn’t be rushed.

It was something that no hunter should be pressured into before he was ready.

I owe it to myself, the moose and to my friend to think this one through, I thought. After all, we might never pass this way again. It shouldn’t just happen out here along the edge of a cedar swamp.

It ought to be special.

“Do you have any candles?” I asked.

Sadly, she didn’t.

That’s when I decided to leave it for another day. Besides, if I got it wrong, there’d be more misinformation about moose droppings out there and I’d be part of the problem, rather than the solution. Talk about a sobering thought.

Well, that was a week ago and after much soul-searching and meditation, I finally formulated a worthy and defensible answer – one I could be proud of; one that she could respect me for.

You see, almost immediately, it occurred to me that those hundreds

of moose droppings were shaped as they were for good reason; perhaps the design had evolved over thousands of years. Maybe it has something to do with the browse they eat, how they ruminate and chew or even the inner workings of their digestive tract. All this was certainly conceivable.

And yet deep down, I somehow knew that it must be for a simpler reason than that.

I remember looking around at the time and wondering exactly where that moose was. Then I marveled at how an

animal so big can remain so unseen and unheard in the open hardwoods of spring.

And then it occurred to me. A moose is a solitary, dignified and incredibly quiet animal for its size. That’s why nothing but small, round, and smooth droppings will do.

So I told her later that day.

Why are moose droppings so small and round?

Easy. If they were larger and with square corners, we’d hear that moose’s every movement …

ast week, a good friend and I went for a walk along the edge of a cedar swamp where it was plain to see that a moose had wintered there. It didn’t hurt that I had run into that cow three times since December in the same area.

At one point, my friend stopped to marvel at a large pile of old moose droppings. Then, she asked me the question that every hunter longs to hear: why are the pellets so small and round, especially since they come from such a large animal?

I’ll never forget that moment …

The cedar swamp was beautiful and fragrant that afternoon; the sun was bright but not too hot, its light painting the forest trail in subdued but dramatic shades. The clouds were billowy but not overly gray or bleached out and they drifted serenely under a crisp, cerulean blue sky like noble Viking ships slipping across a quiet fjord.

Meanwhile, songbirds sang happily in the background, as if they somehow understood the utter solemnity of the perfect moment. Yes, it was just as I always imagined it would be. It was magical.

Perhaps I am overstating the experience, but let’s be honest, no matter what people tell you, if you are lucky, you’ll have someone ask you this sort of question once, maybe twice, in a lifetime.

And now it was my turn. Somehow, whether worthy or not, I had been chosen to pass along this utterly useless

The exercise portion of the event is followed by time for refreshments and entertainment, and all of it is with the goal

of raising funds for research and support services for people in Waterloo Region living with cancer.

Donations support a number of initiatives, including funding promising Canadian research

projects for all types of cancer, providing information services and support programs in the community and advocating for public policies that prevent cancer and help those living with it.

Last year, the Woolwich Great Ride ‘n Stride attracted more than 80 participants who collectively raised more than $18,000 for the cause. Since its inception 30 years ago, the Great Ride ‘n Stride in Ontario has raised more than $6.1 million dollars for the Canadian Cancer

Society, $2.1 million of that in Waterloo Region.

“Some people come out every year to honor a mom or a grandparent, or someone they know that has battled cancer, explained Bradshaw.

“It’s really wonderful to see.”

Registration and pledging can be done online at www.greatride.ca or by picking up a registration form at one of the banks in Elmira starting in early April. If the Elmira location is not convenient, The Great Ride ‘n Stride is also taking place on

the same day at three other locations in Waterloo Region: Waterloo, New Hamburg and Cambridge.

The event takes place regardless of the weather conditions, so Bradshaw reminds participants to be sure to check the local weather forecast and bring the appropriate clothing for the day.

Registration begins at 12 p.m., warm-up and opening ceremonies begin at 12:45 p.m. and participants start the course at 1 p.m.

Charles has been biking since he was seven, and cycles to work in Kitchener every day.

He explains that he doesn’t like taking a car, and biking is also cheaper. This is Derek’s second year road biking, although he did mountain biking for a year or two before that.

Young musicians prepare for the spotlight Steve Kannon

W

hile baseball’s regular season is underway, it’s still spring training for the area’s young musicians: competition doesn’t begin in earnest until Apr. 19, when the Elmira & District Kiwanis Music Festival starts.

The weeklong event will see some 125 performers as young as five years play in front of judges in the categories of junior and senior piano, strings and flute.

The festival will feature solos, duets, trios, quartets, violin solos, vocals, and ensembles.

Kiwanis Music Festivals are a mainstay in communities across

Canada at this time of year. The Elmira version features youngsters from Waterloo Region’s rural townships.

Participants at the festival will perform in a number of classes divided according to grade level, age, and musical ability. A wide variety of music genres will be covered, including baroque, romantic, rock and pop.

Most of the performances, running Apr. 19-23, will take place at Woodside Bible Fellowship in Elmira, while Evangelical Missionary Church will host the flute competition on Apr. 22.

formances at their leisure, said Sue Brenner, secretary for the event with which she’s been involved for more than 25 years.

In that time she’s seen many young musicians – some terrified as firsttime performers – pass through the festival experience stronger for it.

The music is first class, she noted.

“Everyone’s welcome any time of the day – come out if you enjoy good music.”

Four adjudicators will be on hand to mark the students’ performances.

Following the formal competition, a final concert will be held on the Saturday (Apr. 24) showcasing the top mu-

sicians. It will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Woodside.

“We’re really hoping that the community will come – there’s some really great music played,” said music teacher Jackie Wall, some of whose students will be taking part in the festival.

Wall is part of the Elmira Music Teachers Association which hosted a free community recital Thursday evening at Emmanuel Evangelical Missionary Church, giving students a performance opportunity to hone their skills in advance of the “big event.”

Among those competing will be Katie Bartel, 14, and Karley Sider, 12.

Both are studying the violin with Wall, and both will be competing in the festival for the second time – the violin was added to the festival just last year.

Having been through the experience once before, Karley said she will be a little less nervous this time, knowing what to expect. She picked up the instrument three years ago, and now hopes to play professionally.

“I started off with piano, but it was always my dream to be a violinist.”

Katie has been playing for at least eight years – “since I was really young” – and is busy practicing a variety of pieces, including works

by Bartok and Vivaldi, in preparation for the festival.

She, too, is feeling more relaxed going into her second competition.

The two violinists, like all the young competitors, are putting in plenty of hard work in preparation for the festival, said Wall, noting that the discipline will serve them into adulthood.

Adherence to musical studies is also “character building,” she added.

In the more immediate future – beginning Apr. 19 – the musicians will be vying for trophies and scholarships as rewards for their efforts.

Snyder) described as Crooks Tract Broken Front Concession East of Grand River Pt Lot 4 Pt Lot 5. This property comprises approximately 84.5 hectares and contains a single family dwelling and farming operation.

• 1081 Hunsberger Road and a vacant parcel on the south side of Hunsberger Road (Ronon Farms) described as Crooks Tract Broken Front Concession East of Grand River Pt Lot 6. The total land holdings for these parcels is approximately 82 hectares.

The property at 1081 Hunsberger Road contains a single family dwelling and farming operation.

The properties are designated Rural Land Use and Restricted Land Use in the Township’s Official Plan and are zoned Agricultural (A).

The purpose of this application is to change the zoning on a portion of the subject lands from Agricultural to Extractive (see Map 1) to permit an above groundwater mineral aggregate extraction operation. Blogging tends to bring out the negative in us Q. A.

What are the joy and the bane of the blogosphere?

The joy is easy, as increasing numbers of athletes, politicians and scientists have created their own blogs, building a public audience for their spontaneous, raw, uncensored thoughts of the day, says Randy Olson in Don’t Be Such a Scientist.

And that’s great. Yet a distressing downside arose in a debate over teaching evolution vs. intelligent design.

“In my 30 years of reading science writings, I had never before encountered scientists using the foulest, crudest, and most hate-filled language imaginable about the intelligent design movement, i.e., blogging as ‘electronic poo-flinging.’”

An acting class gives insights into the dynamics of this negativity: the easiest and most accessible way into the world of real acting is through “negative spirits”-- basically, anger, rage, hatred,

People and many animals have two different brain hemispheres responsible for different realms of cognitive activity. Why may this be advantageous?

Because brain lateralization and cognitive specialization promote fitness through faster, more accurate problem-solving, says Constance Holden in Science magazine.

To test this out, researchers at Macquarie University in Sidney, Australia, studied 40 parrots (among the cleverer birds), noting their eye and foot preferences under various conditions. They then gave the birds a simple test of picking out seeds from a background of pebbles and a tougher task of retrieving food from the end of a string suspended from a perch. The team found that the parrots

with the strongest cerebral asymmetries (they were usually left-footed) were the most adept. Birds with no particular foot or eye preference did the worst, showing poor coordination and a grabbag of approaches and barely muddling through.
