For the organizers of the event, the hunt was a huge success and they hope it will highlight the enormous benefits of large, mature trees.

Dickie said one 100-yearold beech tree can stand about 20 metres tall, has about 6,000 leaves and a total surface area of two football fields. On a sunny day just one can convert 9,400 litres of carbon dioxide and produce 13 kilograms of oxygen.

He hopes others will take up the challenge of planning the hunt in the future, and will use their website, www.treehunt.ca as a template.

“What we’ve tried to do is create a model from which any other interested groups in the future could pull from,” he said.

Revamped earlier this year under the new Woolwich council, the Chemtura Public Advisory Committee is now going to get some money for the first time. In a split decision this week, township councillors agreed to provide the group with $8,000 to retain the services of Dr. Gail Krantzberg, a professor of civil engineering at McMaster University in Hamilton.

Her advice will be helpful in bringing the new committee members up to speed on the complicated issues associated with the contamination of the aquifers under Elmira, the result of pollutants from the Uniroyal chemical plant, now known as Chemture Co., CPAC member Ron Campbell told council Tuesday night.

“We feel it’s critical to get this processing rolling now,” he said of the urgency to bring a groundwater contamination expert into the fold.

While councillors Mark Bauman and Bonnie Bryant wanted to push off a decision until the 2012 budget talks, the three other councillors opted to find money from existing reserves to move forward.

Meeting this week, Woolwich councillors made the official proclamation following a presentation by Mark Yantzi, the retired executive director of Community Justice Initiatives, and Russ Kelly, one of the young offenders involved in what has become known as the “Elmira case.”

It was in Elmira in 1974 that the restorative concept really began. Following an alcohol-fuelled spree of slashing car tires, smashing windows and other acts of vandalism, two teens were arrested. In an experimental move, Yantzi, then a young probation officer, suggested the two make amends by knocking on the doors of their victims, apologizing for their actions and making restitution.

That case turned out to be the foundation of the movement, the world’s first restorative justice project.

Local police help in takedown of robbery suspect

One nearby resident at the scene said she heard a big bang that echoed across her farm when the accident occurred.

The man was trapped inside the car but was conscious when help arrived. After being ex-

tricated, he was airlifted to a Hamilton hospital with serious head injuries. He was not wearing his seatbelt at the time.

Chilligo Road was closed between Rider Road and Lerch Road for the police investigation until shortly before 3 p.m.

Police thus far have ruled out weather and road conditions, as well as alcohol. They are still looking into other factors in the cause of the crash, such as speed or medical condition, and are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call them at 519-6508500, ext. 8856.

hanges proposed for the Foodland property in Elmira would bring not only an expanded grocery store but new retail space, including a Harvey’s Restaurant, a dollar store and Beer Store, according to plans discussed at Woolwich council Tuesday night.

The additions were unveiled during a public meeting to discuss Official Plan and zone changes requested by Sobeys Capital Inc., owners of the site at Arthur Street and South Field Drive.

Under the proposal, the Foodland would expand into the vacant portion of the existing building, increasing in size to 47,000 square feet from the current 34,000. A 22,000-sq.-ft. addition would be built on to the current structure, some 9,000 sq. ft. for a retail outlet such as a dollar store and 13,000 sq. ft. for a mix of retail, services and offices, perhaps including a wine store. Two separate freestand-

ing buildings would be constructed on the west side of the current parking lot, closer to Arthur Street: a 6,900-sq.-ft. unit to house a restaurant with a drive-thru (Harvey’s being the name attached to the project), and one of 8,000 sq. ft. that could be the new home of the Beer Store.

Hugh Handy, a planner with the GSP Group representing Sobeys, called the plan a “relatively minor change” that wouldn’t upset the current retail balance centered in Elmira’s core.

The goal is to differentiate the offerings from what’s available downtown, he noted.

“We’re not trying to replicate the core on our site,” he said, acknowledging “there will be some shift from

the core.”

That shift is what worries Krista McBay, owner of Home Hardware store and chair of the Elmira Business Improvement Area (BIA).

Since the Foodland store left the core and moved to the south end, there’s been a 10-percent drop in traffic downtown, she noted, adding the addition of more retail could draw away even more customers.

The organization is eager to see a new tenant, preferably a grocery store, in the long-vacant former Foodland/IGA building. McBay questioned whether an expansion at the new Foodland store would have an impact on the potential for a new food store downtown.

The flurry of activity took its toll on the much smaller Selby’s Marketplace in Birdland Plaza, which subsequently wound down operation.

called for another sidewalk in the 32 years they’ve been on the street.

“The sidewalk on the west side has been sufficient.”

She called on councillors to scrap the second sidewalk as it would mean the removal of several mature trees and put others at risk. The trees and other plantings provide a host of benefits, including absorbing pollutants and gathering runoff that would otherwise end up in storm sewers.

“Do we need more concrete in this world?” she asked.

In a joint presentation, neighbour John M o s l e y - Wi l l i a m s said another sidewalk would cause more problems than benefits. Because the walkway would bisect driveways on the east and north sides of the crescent, it would force residents to park some of their vehicles on the road, decreasing visibility, increasing congestion and making the street more dangerous for drivers and cyclists – “a crowded and dangerous situation.”

“We need this like a hole in the head. We could use the money better elsewhere. Be financially prudent.

Listen to your constituents,” he urged councillors. “Your decision should be not to waste money where it’s not needed.”

ropose a sidewalk, get a fight. It was business as usual for Woolwich council this week, this time facing residents of Elmira’s Nightingale Crescent.

This time the neighbourhood won, as the planned reconstruction of the roadway will include only a widening of the existing sidewalk on the west side.

When the project goes ahead net year, there will be no new sidewalk on the east side of the street.

The scenario that played out in council chambers Tuesday night is a familiar one: every time a new sidewalk is proposed for an established neighbourhood, residents fret about the loss of mature trees, maintenance issues, reduced driveway space and related parking problems.

Many of those concerns were voiced by 10 residents who spoke in opposition to the plan, eventually swaying councillors. A petition submitted to the township found 98 per cent of property owners and residents opposed to a second sidewalk.

Kan Chhatwal argued a new sidewalk failed to survive a cost-benefit analysis, including the environmental, social and aesthetic costs, noting the current sidewalk gets little use. Tracking pedestrians on Monday morning from 7:30 a.m. until noon, the residents counted 15 people, or one every 15 to 20 minutes.

“One could call this a very lonely sidewalk,” he said, adding there’s no history of issues with vehicular or foot traffic on the street.

“Nightingale Crescent already has a pedestrian-friendly environment.”

The arguments clearly struck home with councillors, who quickly voted unanimously to override a staff recommendation for sidewalks on both sides of the street.

Manager of engineering Richard Sigurdson had suggested the dual sidewalks as part of a reconstruction of the roadway, in keeping with the practice to bring older streets up to the standards now demanded of new subdivisions. Putting in a new sidewalk as part of the larger project would add some $50,000 to the overall budget, he noted.

That money could be better used in other areas, countered Mayor Todd Cowan in voting down the second sidewalk.

Spending was also on the mind of Coun.

Mark Bauman. While supportive of saving trees, he said that was not the determinant in his decision to oppose the sidewalk, noting council is looking for an across-the-board five per cent cut going into its 2012 budget talks.

“Adding things to projects isn’t trimming things.”

Coun.

Julie-Anne Herteis suggested the proposed widening of the existing sidewalk – to the current standard of 1.5 metres (5 feet) from 1.2 metres – is enough of an improvement.

The township is looking to hold a public open house in December to discuss the reconstruction project. A second sidewalk won’t be in the mix when neighbours look at the plans.

Albrecht gets wide support for suicide-prevention bill James Jackson

aying suicide shouldn’t be a taboo subject in Canada, Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Harold Albrecht led a discussion on bill C300 in the House of Commons, his private member’s bill that he hopes will lead to a national strategy on suicide prevention.

Albrecht said he was encouraged by the discussion and the support he received from all parties in the house.

The bill was seconded by both the Liberals and the NDP. Albrecht said Green Party leader Elizabeth May

called his office to offer her support, but by that point the seconding roster was full with 20 names.

“That’s a good signal in terms of the party support. Obviously I won’t assume that every person is necessarily as eager to support it, but it’s an indication of broad-based support,” Albrecht said.

With this bill, Albrecht said his primary goal is to open up debate and discussion on the topic of suicide prevention, and to provide help for groups that are already working in communities across Canada on the issue of

suicide prevention.

The MPP said he wants to provide a broader base of support in terms of statistics, offering best practices, and help them get their hands on research to apply to their local context.

“This bill has no intention of telling communities or groups how to do suicide prevention. We have to leave that in the hands of the local communities because local communities understand themselves best,” he added.

Canada is one of the only major developed nations that does not

have suicide prevention co-ordination at the national level, Albrecht said. In 2007, more than 3,600 Canadians committed suicide; a number that the MP said is too high.

“The silence around this is what we need to break. We need to be talking about it.”

This is not the first time Albrecht has tabled a bill relating to suicide. When 18-yearold Carlton University student Nadia Kajouji committed suicide in March of 2008 after she was encouraged to do so over the Internet, Albrecht penned bill

M388 which sought to amend the criminal code to prevent predators from exploiting vulnerable Canadians online and encouraging suicide.

That bill was passed unanimously on Nov. 18, 2009 and the response that Albrecht received from the public encouraged him to pursue the issue further.

The suicide of 15-year-old James Hubley on Oct. 14 has thrust the issue back into the national spotlight, a fact that Albrecht said could be perceived as both a positive and a

negative; positive in that it has gotten people talking about the issue of mental health, but negative because of the loss of yet another promising young Canadian.

“Every suicide death is extremely unfortunate. There is no question that every life is precious, and every suicide is a tragedy; there is no doubt about that.”

Albrecht anticipates another round of discussion about the bill to occur in either late November, early December, or in January once the House resumes.

Making it official at the Waterloo Region Museum Grand opening next weekend sees the inaugural of two gallery spaces

id you know that the cup holder in a Toyota is sized for a doubledouble? Or that Ontario Hydro started in the Waterloo Region?

These facts and a lot more are featured at the Waterloo Region Museum, which is holding its grand opening on Nov. 12.

The museum, located in Kitchener on Huron Road, is the largest municipally owned and operated museum in Ontario.

The focus of the museum is on the region’s three cities and four townships, covering the history of the area from 12,000 year ago to the present day.

Starting with First Nation’s history, followed by European settlers around 1800 and the black settlements in the Queen’s Bush in Wellesley Township, right up to current innovations and manu-

facturing companies, the museum provides a broad spectrum for visitors to enjoy.

“The region is very globally connected, and we represent that within the walls of our museum,” said curator Tom Reitz. “In terms of this region, the museum tells a broad-brush look at the region’s history, picking up various highlights; no other museum does that.”

With exhibits exploring how people make a living in the region both in the past and today, visitors can discover local industries, including textile making, boot and shoemaking, furniture making, agriculture, button making and car manufacturing.

day,” said Reitz.” That makes us unique. The story of Waterloo Region is very unique.”

The museum is a sustainable building using locally-sourced, reclaimed materials.

The main front hallway was built using an old 19th century barn that originally stood a mile from the museum’s site on the other side of the Grand River. The outdoor wa-

ter feature, which has a metaphorical connection to the Grand River, also serves as a green feature as the water pumped into the building and works as the grey water in all the toilets and urinals allowing the building to use 60 per cent less municipal water.

The plans for the building date back to the mid-1990s, with construction begin-

ning in 2006.

“We like to say the concept for the building started in 1912, the same year the Waterloo Historical Society was founded to collect the county’s history,” joked Reitz.

Construction is still ongoing inside the museum, with plans to have it finished and open to the public next Saturday.

The museum has

been open for a year and half but the grand opening will see the two gallery spaces open to the public for the first time.

The long-term gallery that should stay the same for the next 15 to 20 years will house the permanent exhibit, while the short-term gallery will change once a year or every six months.

The first short term exhibit is called Unconventional Thinking: Innovation in Waterloo Region.

Entering the permanent gallery visitors are confronted by a large steam engine and are guided through numerous exhibits covering a wide range of items and events from the history of the region including the regions’ immigration story, a 1700s Conestoga covered wagon, an Ontario Hydro promotion

he eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month is the formal focus of Remembrance Day. For Elmira and Linwood, there’s an extra reminder in the form of the Elmira Legion’s activities on the Sunday prior to Nov. 11.

The local Legion chose the earlier commemoration for a variety of reason, including giving other Legions in the area a chance to participate in the Elmira or Linwood parades.

“The Legions in Kitchener, Waterloo, Elora and Drayton all hold their parades on Nov. 11 so we decided to hold ours on the Sunday before as it give them an opportunity to attend our parade and we can then send someone to theirs,” said Sandy Pember, president of the Elmira Legion.

Having the parade on the weekend also allows the Elmira Legion to hire a band, which can be quite tricky on the actual day.

“We also get some real good support from the Scouting and Guiding organizations as they are available to come and participate in the parade on the weekend.”

Pember said the Legion has had a great amount of community support holding the parade on the Sunday as it allows those who work during the week a chance to come and pay their respect where they may not have the

Museum: Aiming for a unique experience 20,000 square feet of exhibition space between the two galleries and a movie theatre that is used to host movie festivals and lectures, visitors have numerous choices to explore.

“This has been a real privilege to be a part of and an amazing project to see completed,” said Reitz.

The grand opening begins at 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 13. The celebration features exhibits including What Makes Us Who We Are? – An exploration of more that 12,000 years of Waterloo Region’s history, 2012 Community Highlight Exhibit and the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame.

There will be a free shuttle bus running from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. over the weekend from the Fairview Park mall.

Kiwanis Club coordinates door-to-door food drive blitz Colin Dewar

T

he Woolwich Community Services are preparing their hampers for the Kiwanis Club of Elmira’s annual Christmas Goodwill food drive.

Volunteers from this year’s community drive will be canvassing door to door looking for non-perishable items to replenish the local food bank.

Instead of smaller community groups running their own food drives, groups are collaborating with the Kiwanis Club, pooling their resources and allowing the food drive to cover more ground in less time.

“Last year we collected 13,000 pounds of food and we hope to match that this year, even though the economic outlook is not as promising as last year.

We feel the need is just

as great if not greater than last year,” said Fred Karpala, Kiwanis member and co-chair of the food drive. “With the help of other community groups, we are now able to canvass all of Woolwich in just three hours.”

This year members of the Bloomingdale Mennonite Church will cover Bloomingdale and Maryhill, while a number of Woolwich Minor Hockey teams and the Breslau Air Cadets will help out in other areas of the township.

The small army of volunteers numbering close to 160 will be out early Nov. 19 starting at 9 a.m. and hope to finish up around noon.

The Kiwanis Club is asking homeowners to help by leaving their food items in a bag on the front porch with a note attached to the bag indicating “food drive.”

Last year the club filled 154 hampers that were distributed to less fortunate families, including more than 500 children and adults.

“We are hoping to collect even more food with our townshipwide canvass, to help meet what we feel may be a greater need this year,” said Karpala.

“The volunteers will be out even if it rain or snows.”

“All the food that is collected on the day is going to fill all the hampers we have,” said Christie. “Without the food drive we would be able to provide some food that we collect from the local schools but it would not be as much as we need. With the Kiwanis holding the food drive in November we know we will have a good selection of food for those who need it.”

Currently the food bank has in excess of 8,000 pounds of food thanks to the recent Thanksgiving food drive.

“We are not low right now but we are always accepting food for the food bank because sometimes as quickly as it comes in, it quickly goes out,” said Christie.

t was an evening to reminisce and catch up with old friends as the 2011 graduating class from Elmira District Secondary School reconvened in the school gymnasium for one final time Oct. 28.

The graduation ceremony began with the procession of students past their applauding families, and a formal greeting from school board trustee Harold Paisley and principal Mary Ann Richer.

“Many of you have already begun to experience the next part of your life: first year of college or university, work, or perhaps you’ve travelled. There are so many opportunities ahead of you,” said Paisley standing in front a packed gym.

He encouraged the students to remember their roots of EDSS, but to develop their wings and to soar to new heights and to discover new things.

“Cherish and honour your roots, stretch and soar on your wings,” Paisley said.

Richer echoed Paisley’s message of taking the next step beyond the comforts of high school and testing their personal limits. She said that the next few years would be a time of discovery and even unrest as they find their way in the world, but to not give up on their dreams.

“Choose something you believe in, and give it your best,” she said.

“Pick a dream that fills you with passion and work towards it with all of your heart so that you will never have any regrets for missed opportunities.”

Following her speech, the awards portion of the evening began.

More than 65 awards were given out, ranging from academic or sporting success while at EDSS, to scholarships and bursaries to be used as they pursue a career past high school.

Riley Doering was the big winner of the evening, taking home 10 awards.

After the graduates received their awards and diplomas, the graduating class’s valedictorian, Vanessa Lachance, delivered her speech.

In it, she continued the theme of the evening by encouraging her friends and fellow grads to step outside of their comfort zones, “rub a little dirt in it,” she said, and branch out and touch other people’s lives.

She also touched on her own personal struggles with an illness in Grade 11 that limited her academic and athletic success that year.

“It’s not success or accomplishment that defines you as a person, but embracing hardship and pushing

Council decisions should put residents first W

hat is it about sidewalks that gets people so incensed? Ever since the “great First Street rebellion” of the late 1990s, no issue has consistently galvanized residents like plans to install a strip of concrete along township property in front of their homes.

That trend was on display again this week, as more than a dozen residents of Nightingale Crescent in Elmira voiced their displeasure about plans to install a sidewalk on the currently concrete-free side of the street. They were well prepared, armed with facts and made convincing arguments to support their case.

In the end, councillors made the right decision in axing the idea.

This week’s decision was a classic case of how you can fight city hall.

More importantly, it shows the importance of applying common sense to each decision, rather than relying

on “that’s the way we do things” to push ahead with something.

In this case, engineering staff recommended the sidewalk because the new standard is to install them on both sides of the street, along with curbs and gutters. This is applied to all new subdivisions, which is a debatable requirement but certainly not overly contentious as the concrete is laid before anyone moves on to the street.

It’s a different scenario in retrofitting existing neighbourhoods, however, where the sidewalks usually prove disruptive. As the residents noted Tuesday night, there’s the impact on mature trees, which must be removed in some cases. And although the property belongs to the municipality, there’s just something annoying about having to deal with a sidewalk bisecting your driveway after years of no such inconvenience.

That also leads to real problems in that it cuts off usable driveway space, often forcing residents to park on the streets and increasing congestion.

After listening to residents, councillors did a simple cost-benefit analysis, and saw an additional sidewalk made no sense. The current walkway, to be widened as part of the project, is lightly used. A second one on the east side of the street would be even less so, given that it’s removed from the feeder streets to the west. So, the township would spend an additional $50,000 (and likely much more), and then it would be stuck with maintenance, repairs and eventual replacement costs, not to mention yet another stretch of sidewalk to be cleared of snow, an issue also guaranteed to elicit howls from the public, but that’s another matter.

week’s decision is that councillors challenged the status quo, while doing what they’re supposed to: representing citizens. A necessary part of their jobs is being at odds with staff recommendations. Councillors rely on bureaucrats for information and advice, but their roll goes beyond rubber-stamping suggestions, as was too often the case in previous years.

To be sure, there are times when officials have to make unpopular decisions because it’s the right thing to do. Residents will leave meetings unhappy. Councillors will take a political hit. But, again, tough choices are part of the job.

Approaching their first year in office, this group of councillors, mostly newcomers, have dealt with a few contentious issues, but many more remain, including legal wranglings over gravel pits. A residents-first perspective will serve them well.

Population disaster is mostly an African problem

A

ccording to the United Nations, the world’s population passed the seven billion mark this week, and there was much tutting and shaking of heads over its prediction that we will be 10 billion by the end of the century. But almost nobody will have the temerity to point out that this is almost entirely an African problem.

The United Nations Population Fund’s own numbers tell the story. Africa currently has one-seventh of the world’s people: just over one billion.

But during the rest of the century, the UN agency predicts, this single continent will add an extra 2.6 billion people, more than tripling in population, while all the rest of the world adds just half a billion.

If it weren’t for the African population boom, the world’s population would never exceed 7.5 billion. That is still probably twice as many people as the planet’s resources could support comfortably for more than a couple of generations – but birth rates are falling to below replacement level in most places. If that were happening in Africa too, the global population could be headed back down well before 2100.

It isn’t happening in Africa, or at least not nearly fast enough. Nor is the UN naively projecting current birth rates into the indefinite future.

It assumes that the current average fertility rate for the African continent of 4.6 children per woman will fall to only three children per woman by 2045, though some countries – Niger, Mali and Uganda, for example – will continue to have higher birth rates.

The problem is that replacement level is 2.2 children per woman. Africa may well reach that level by late in the century, but the population growth

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER will continue for a further 30-40 years, until the last generation from the babyboom days has grown up and had its own 2.2 children per family. So a total African population of 3.6 billion by the end of the century – a third of the human race – is probably as good as it is going to get.

If African birth rates do not decline steeply, it could be a great deal worse.

If the current rate of African population growth persisted, we would have a global total of 15 billion people by the end of the century, with about half of them crammed into that single continent. But let’s go with the optimistic assumption that there will be “only” 10 billion of us.

What will the African population boom mean for the rest of the world, and for Africa itself ? It may be a surprisingly self-contained disaster.

An Africa that more than triples its population during the rest of this century will certainly still be the world’s poorest continent at the end of it. Even the current improvement in economic growth rates in many African countries is largely cancelled out by population growth: few countries are seeing significant rises in per capita income.

If Africans stay poor, then their impact on the rest of the world will be slight. They will not become major consumers of resources imported from elsewhere, because they cannot afford them. Even their impact on the global environment, while not negligible,

will be quite limited. It is high-income consumers of energy, manufactured goods and processed foods who really count when it comes to global issues like climate change.

Three hundred million Americans have more effect on the global environment than would three billion Africans living more or less in their present style. Subsistence farmers mostly affect the local environment, even when there are a lot of them. If they degrade their land, pollute their rivers and destroy their forests, the damage they do is mostly to themselves. Urban slum dwellers do even less damage to the global environment.

If no miracle intervenes, the African continent is going to have a very hard time in this century. It is already the only continent to experience recurrent famines, and they will probably get much worse. Civil wars and massacres are already more frequent in Africa than anywhere else, and that too will get worse, because people under great pressure rarely behave well.

What, if anything, can be done about this? Even a big push to make contraception available to the hundred million African women who do not now have easy access to it would not substantially change the outcome at this point. Only a brutally enforced one-child policy like China’s could do that, and it is simply impossible to believe that this could be done in any African state.

Africans have done nothing wrong, nor indeed is their birth-rate higher than those on other continents at various past times. But there is only a limited time available to get the birthrate down once modern medicine and

Can technology really make us more democratic?

W

hat does it mean to be a good citizen? Ask a hundred people, get a hundred different answers.

In the context of next week’s Remembrance Day activities, good citizenship can be defined as those willing to sacrifice everything for the protection of the country and other citizens. That’s not a bad start, but a pair of world wars are an anomaly, not the typical yardstick by which to measure citizenship.

Some people will argue the internet and social media have ushered in a new era of citizen engagement.

It’s certainly helped, as is clearly the case with the Arab Spring.

Electronic devices allowed decentralized groups and individuals to communicate, organize, react in a timely fashion and stay one step ahead of authorities. We’ve seen dictators topple from power. Great.

But the real test will be what kind of governments emerge from the ruins of the fallen despots. Will new power-mongers emerge, as in revolutions elsewhere? Will some nominally democratic movements peter off into new authoritarian regimes? Even if those countries emulate governments in the West, you certainly can’t argue that we’re the end-all and be-all of democracy, let alone empowered.

Most of us can’t be bothered to get involved. Hell, half of us can’t even muster enough energy to spend five minutes every four years casting a ballot.

Social media does make it easier, though it would mean using our near-constant tether to cyberspace to do more than cyber-stalk your favourite celebrity.

The good news is that our electronic devices might be a gateway to greater involvement. In fact, a

The same study also revealed that a third of Canadians have an improved view of elected officials who use social media to engage with constituents.

The survey found that 54 per cent of those surveyed agreed to the statement, “I would be more engaged in conversations of government policy if there were ways to participate online.” Agreement was strongest at 57 per cent among those aged 18-35, followed by those 35-54 (53 per cent) and 55+ (52 per cent). Youth were also more likely to access a government service if they heard about it online: 46 per cent compared to 37 per cent of those surveyed overall.

Not surprisingly, a younger demographic is most influenced by social media in terms of their perception of elected officials. For instance those aged 18-35 were most likely at 49 per cent as compared to 33 per cent of general population to favourably perceive elected officials using social media.

When asked “When you see that an elected official is using social media, to communicate with constituents, does this improve or worsen your perception of them?” of those surveyed, 33 per cent over-

all said it did improve their perception. 53 per cent said that it had no impact, while only 14 per cent said it worsened their perception.

Politicians have taken in that message, though to date social media has been another tool for getting out the message, not for fostering generally participative democracy.

Here in Ontario, the McGuinty government says it’s committed to what it calls e-Government. It envisions an electronic citizen engagement of forms, including internet consultations on proposed law and/ or policy; “town hall” meetings via the web; open on-going dialogues; online remote voting; and digital voting.

Closer to home, we have the likes of Woolwich Mayor Todd Cowan, who never strays from his Blackberry. He’s cited email and online feedback as the rationale for a number of decisions around both the township and regional council tables.

A fine thing, but is it more than another public relations tool?

Something evolving into a true democracy, the kind envisioned by the Occupy Wall Street movement that would make government re-

sponsible to the many instead of the privileged few?

Where, for instance, does it fall on the “Ladder of Citizen Participation,” a measure devised by Sherry Arnstein in 1969, well before today’s electronic innovations? Her eightrung ladder starts with “manipulation” on the bottom and ascends to “citizen control” at the top. The middle rungs are “informing,” “consultation” and “placation” – grouped together as tokenism, which appears to be where we’re at.

We’re certainly a long way from the top three levels, “partnership” and “delegated power” on the way to citizen control.

In her paper from more than four decades ago, she cites a placard from a 1968 student-worker rebellion in France. It translates as “I participate, you participate, he participates, we participate, you participate ... they profit.” That’s tokenism: governments pay lip service to consultations and other forms of public participation, but then maintains the status quo that benefits only a few.

Sounds like we haven’t come very far in 40 years, despite all the shiny new toys.

Grow fast enough economically, and your people will have smaller families as they get more prosperous. Stay poor for too long, and population growth will overwhelm you. For various reasons, none of

them their own fault, Africans have stayed poor for too long. Individual countries can still save themselves, and some will, but the continent as a whole probably cannot.

Few Africans will say that because it’s too painful to contemplate, and few outsiders will say it because it is politically incorrect. But a lot of people know it.

Need to make it easier to care for animals  To the Editor, I live on a “retired” farm homestead.

It seems some people who are tired of their pets or don’t want them anymore for one reason or another, think it is appropriate to just drive them away somewhere and drop them off. Last winter I noticed a strange cat visiting our property eating frozen bird seed and suet. I soon found out it was taking shelter in the culvert underground along the front of our property. This cat was tame and affectionate and very cold. I brought it into the back porch and gave it a warmly-lined box and plenty to eat. Eventually it found a good home.

There have been numerous cats and dogs thrown off here over the years, all which have been sick or pregnant. Why? Possibly because

they can’t afford the fees for taking it to the vet or humane society or are just too lazy or uncaring to do the right thing. Or, perhaps they couldn’t find a pet patrol shelter or humane society that would take it in, because they were already full, the same problem I had when trying to find a place for the unfortunate cat I found.

We hear horror stories of kittens being thrown out of moving vehicles into traffic, and dogs and cats being cruelly abused. This “dropoff ” tactic is another form of abuse.

There are some barn cats on this retired homestead, all of which have had an upper respiratory problem for years. Kittens born here have the same problem passed on from their mother. They usually have an eye problem, for which I acquired an eye drop treatment from the local veterinarian, which cleared up the problem. I have bought this treatment several times in the past without taking the cat in, as they have a file on these cats. Recently I stopped in again to purchase this treatment and they refused to sell it to me, saying a new ruling had recently

come into effect from the College of Veterinarians of Ontario –they may not give any treatment without the animal being brought in for assessment. This is just another money grab scheme, and in the meantime, the animals may suffer. So, tell me where the compassion and caring for the animals comes into this scheme. This is another form of animal abuse.

As for another issue, why isn’t there a clinic in this area for neutering and spaying cats at a reasonable cost as there are in other cities across Canada? The cost of spaying or neutering a cat is horrendous.

Why would farmers and/or others who can’t afford it, do this. It’s no wonder there is an overpopulation of cats in the area.

As for the College of Veterinar-

ians of Ontario, your rules and regulations are nothing more than a money grab. Where is your compassion and caring for the animals?

Perhaps you should look into better ways to help citizens with their animals and/or pets, then maybe there wouldn’t be the abuse that there is.

There are cities across Canada, as well as in Ontario, that have a solution to the problem of overpopulation. Maybe you should look into a solution as well.

We need more facilities at reasonable prices for spaying, neutering, vaccinating, and medications to help people who can’t afford exorbitant fees to keep their pets healthy and happy. How long will it take to get some action on this matter?

n Monday, Dalton McGuinty’s government confirmed what many in the renewable sector knew was coming: a review of the province’s lucrative feed-in-tariff (FIT) and microFIT program that rewards those who produce renewable energy with premium prices.

Energy Minister Chris Bentley announced that the review would be led by deputy minister Fareed Amin in conjunction with the Ontario Power Authority. Aside from reassessing the program rates, Bentley also confirmed that the review would consider new technology and fuel sources not included under the current plan.

“We’ve had an enormously successful start to the FIT program,” he said in an interview Tuesday.

“We signed contracts for enough green energy to power 1.2 million homes and those contracts have already generated or will generate 20,000 direct or indirect jobs.”

Under the review, any FIT contracts signed prior to Aug. 31 and any microFIT projects in the application phase before that date, will not be affected by the new prices.

Bentley said the review was planned when the FIT program was first introduced back in 2009, and is designed to increase efficiencies and balance costs across the whole sector.

“We want to ensure that we continue to grow green energy sources and jobs, and get those at the right price. That’s what this review will enable us to do,” he said, adding that he did not know what the new prices could be.

Bentley would also not go so far as to confirm that a drop in premiums paid to those generating the power would necessarily lead to a drop in prices paid by consumers.

“They’re related, but one does not necessarily lead directly to the other.”

Under the old program, solar projects could net a return of up to 80.2 cents per kWh, wind saw returns of 13.5 cents per kWh, and biogas projects could be paid up to 19.5 cents per kWh. The FIT program applied to commercial projects while the microFIT projects were those on residential properties.

The program was a contentious one during the recent provincial election, and PC leader Tim Hudak pledged to scrap it, calling it “unsustain-

able” for ratepayers across the province who couldn’t afford the subsidies.

Critics have also blasted the program in recent months by saying that despite the fact that costs to install and operate solar systems have dropped dramatically, the amount being paid by the government for each kilowatt of energy has not.

Bentley said that this review was another step in the natural progression of the green energy program in Ontario, and that these sorts of reviews were common across Europe, which has a longer history with renewable energy, and would help bring prices more in step with the true costs of producing the energy.

He also said he doesn’t think the review, which isn’t expected to be complete for at least a couple of months, would lead to stagnation or concern in the renewable sector.

“That’s why the review has been directed to find the right price,” he said. “We’re trying to get the right balance.”

What does this review mean for companies in Waterloo Region? As anyone who has driven along the countryside can tell you, renewable energy – in particular solar and wind – has become very popular as

homeowners and businesses looked to cash in on the high prices paid out by the government in an effort to get the green energy sector off the ground during the uncertain economic climate of 2009.

Elmira Stove Works made the move to begin designing and assembling fixed groundmount and roof-mount solar units ranging from 10 kilowatts up to 500 kilowatts in the middle of 2010.

Since then, the cost of building and installing the units has dropped due to more manufacturers and more efficient production methods, and the company said that the incentive prices paid by the government through FIT or microFIT need to be adjusted as well to reflect that reduction.

“It’s almost too good of an investment now and the government was not planning on having the rate of returns to be as high as they are at this point,” said vice-president Brian Hendrick, who estimated that some of the packages they sell have fallen by up to 20 per cent in price.

He said that the difference in price for the energy produced should be made up by the less costly systems, meaning that renewable will remain a good investment.

Good investment or not, some installers are unhappy with the way the review was handled by the government. Jim Bolger, one of the partners in Waterloo Energy Products in Maryhill who specializes in solar as well as geothermal energy, said it should have been dealt with much differently.

“I’m disappointed to a certain regard with the lag to get the review done,” he said.

“I anticipated that some of the consulting process would have been a work in progress.”

Bolger fears that the public will shy away from renewable energy until they know for sure what the new rates are going to be and what the new program will look like, and that could mean two to three months of lost or reduced business for his company.

“The delays to do this process, which could have been done ahead of time, will adversely affect contractors in this province for sure,” he said.

New network puts a megaphone on rural Ontario Food For Thought Owen Roberts ers existed, given rural Ontario’s block vote against the provincial Liberals.

But network project manager Manon Germain says there’s been a decline in civic engagement in rural communities in this province. The citizenry may rally around election times to state its collective case, but Germain says it’s becoming increasing disengaged with day-to-day community activities that have traditionally made rural Ontario a place that felt like home. She was raised in northern Ontario and recalls the neighbourliness and volunteerism that was an integral part of the community fabric.

“I think it’s declining,” she says. “I sense it in [the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario] and other rural organizations. We need to find out why this is happening, and how people can be engaged to better their communities. We need to put a megaphone to rural Ontario and find out what’s going on.”

Germain says pockets of understanding about rural issues exist throughout Ontario on matters such as land use, and overall, conversations about huge issues such as rural resource development and leadership are being tackled by the Rural Ontario

Institute. However, when it comes to developing public policy specifically around civic engagement, she says the research is either out of date, or lacking.

This project also breathes some new life into the 115-year-old Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario organization. It’s been a rural mainstay, and with this research project, it’s again taking a leadership role in community development. Germain says there’s a duality to this project – the activity empowers women, and brings the existing strengths of the federation to rural Ontario at a crucial time, when it’s being increasingly counted on for the likes of food, resources, recreation, housing and transportation.

Germain says this rural voices project will be based on a “Three Cs” approach – communicate, collaborate and community. That means amplifying the voices of rural community members to communicate their needs around civic engagement, harness the collective power of rural organizations to make it happen, and finally empower communities to engage in discussion.

“Rural citizens hold a huge wealth,” says Germain. “There’s value in building a bridge of communication between rural citizens, organizational and municipal leaders.”

The first Rural Voices meeting is scheduled for Guelph Nov. 10. The Fergus meeting will take place Nov.27; Innisfil follows Jan. 4.

“There has been a substantial investment in the manufacturing side (of solar power) in the province, and this really puts that sector in limbo.”

Yet as a distributor of geothermal systems, he is also optimistic that the energy source could be included under the government’s green energy plan, though there are challenges with that as well, he said.

Since geothermal does not produce electricity, but instead reduces consumption, it does not fit under the current pricing scheme that rewards energy production and not energy conservation.

That would have to be changed, he said.

“Conservation can easily be quantified and tracked, and it’s just as valuable to reduce energy as it is to produce it,” he said.

“If you reduce enough of the demand for kilowatt hours, then it alleviates the need to expand the grid, which comes at a significant capital cost.”

While both Bolger and Hendrick have concerns that the lag between the

t’s pretty clear rural Ontario is either ticked off, feeling alienated, or both.

Agriculturally speaking, the provincial Liberals did everything possible to win votes there over the past four years, continually bringing in new programs – particularly a highly coveted insurance program – that farmers requested. Even green energy was lauded by most farmers, particularly solar power, despite some administrative hiccups.

Still, the Liberals were hammered.

But I don’t think it was a result of anger specifically in the farm community.

Rather, it was rural people thinking their voices weren’t being heard.

So it’s timely indeed that a new initiative called the Rural Voices Network is coincidentally being launched to give a forum to those who feel disenfranchised from decision makers, and indeed, from each other. The network is being driven by the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario and supported by a $140,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant.

Over the next three months, public meetings will be held in seven communities across Ontario, including Fergus and Guelph, as network officials and researchers at the University of Guelph learn how and why people participate in the common life of rural communities. Following that, surveys will be delivered to 15,000 rural Ontario households, asking similar questions about what communities consider barriers to civic engagement.

end of Aug. 31 and the announcement of the new FIT program – whenever that might be – could have a negative impact on their business, Hendrick is confident that it will only be a blip in the long-term success of Ontario’s green energy economy and should not take the wind out of the province’s renewable energy sails.

What’s more, Hendrick said the drop in prices should lend more credibility to the program and more credence to its stability in the future.

“It might be more acceptable to some of the naysayers of the program (if premiums drop). “(The government) have their finger on the pulse of the industry and they won’t reduce prices to a number where people just throw up their arms and say ‘Ok, I’m out, this doesn’t make any sense’” And for Bentley, who’s only been on the energy file for about two weeks after taking over from Brad Duguid, he reaffirmed the Liberal party’s commitment to the green energy act, the green economy, and following through on their pledge to shut down the province’s coal plants by 2014.

“We have done a lot of work in the past eight years modernizing a transmission system that didn’t have the attention it needed before, building a lot of new generation, launching and building a green energy economy.

“A lot of work has gone on and some important decisions will be made over the next several years.”

A

buse can be performed either physically or emotionally, and both types can have negative affect on families and children. Not only does abuse affect the person suffering from it, but it can also scar those forced to watch it and live with it at home.

For years growing up Trudy Metzger faced domestic abuse by the hand of her father and it affected the way she saw herself and other men in her life.

Through the years Metzger eventually learned to deal with her pain and with the help of her husband, their five children and her faith she was able to overcome her fears and demons.

Metzger, who lives in Elmira, is holding a two-day seminar and talk for women about how to deal with family abuse called “Set Free to Dance Again” at the Woodside Bible Fellowship Nov. 11 and 12.

Starting on the Friday Metzger will tell her childhood story up to the age of 13.

“It is very violent. I am not graphic but I don’t hold back or make it better than it was.

When I was younger I experienced a lot of sexual abuse,” she said. “I talk about how the violence in my home and upbringing impacted me and how I dealt with the constant fear and how that made me a very strong resilient and determined little girl.”

Metzger had the chance to face her father before he passed away and the two of them spoke about the violence he inflicted on her and the rest of the family.

“This ended my relationship with my father on a good note but it did not erase the years of hell that I went through,” she said. “(My father) applauded who I had become in my life with my husband, Tim, and our children.”

The next day of the event Metzger will continue her story, explaining how she accepted faith into her life.

She left home at the age of 15 running away from the violence and her fears of what she might do to her father if it continued.

“Even though I was not violent by nature I had a breaking point and it felt like it was going to bring out the worst in me. I would find myself thinking and plotting things in my head which

For the next two years she created hell for herself and the world she lived in and made some really bad choices. She would have troubles dealing with young men, sex and abuse.

“I let myself be victimized because I didn’t know I have a voice and I explore the silent anger and rebellion that I went through in my talk,” said Metzger. “You can only run so far so fast until you hit a brick wall.”

Metzger hit her wall when she found herself living with a drug dealer in Fort Wayne, Indiana and found out he was an ex-con and was constantly lying to her.

“Eventually we ended up living in Kitchener for a bit and he had a job opportunity in the States and I was not allowed to go cross the border with him so he left me and I

called my older brother to come pick me up,” she said.

It would be the family she ran from that eventually started to help her heal all the years of pain.

Her family accepted her back with open arms and it was her little brother who would play a huge role in her coming back to faith when during one Christmas he asked to sing a song called ‘Neither Do I Condemn You.’ “I remember thinking at that point the song was speaking to me. Jesus is not here to judge me he is here to love me,” said Metzger.

“This was a dramatic shift in how I saw God because up to that point God was the violent image my father had portrayed and suddenly I am seeing a Jesus that is not judging and it is not about what I have done but that he loves me.

It was such a radical shift

that transformed my life.”

Metzger will be joined on the Saturday by Guelph native and model Alicia Smith, who will do a talk called Beauty Redefined and she will discuss what society sees beauty as and how women who have been abused see themselves.

She will also discuss how she was judged and treated in the modeling world.

“We need to first see ourselves as beautiful on the inside and that will reflect on the outside,” said Metzger.

The final talk of the weekend called Unleashing the Next Generation: A New Legacy will be a discussion about the importance of what it takes to stand against generational violence.

“We are talking about overcoming violence and abuse but even if you haven’t been exposed to that you still have pain to deal with and we

Small items can make a big difference in Africa Colin Dewar

d and Gloria Cardoso are turning their home in Breslau into a drop-off depot for used hand tools and sewing items as the couple try to make a difference in Gbendembu, one of the most war-ravaged areas in Sierra Leone.

The items will be traveling by shipping container from Canada to Africa, where the non-government organization GEKO-Sierra Leone has set up a skill training program focused on carpentry and tailoring or seamstress trade training. The group hopes to expand into small engine repair and computer skill training as the program develops.

“We are thrilled to be able to see this project come to life,” said Gloria. “As people clean out their garage and sheds in preparation for winter we are asking for donations of used

tools that will be used for carpentry, masonry, small engine repair, or tailoring.”

Only useable manual tools are sought, as the village in Sierra Leone has no electricity.

Hammers, clamps, vises, chisels, augers, hand drills, carpentry planes, hacksaws, wood saws, nails, screwdrivers, combination squares, thread, needles, and tape measures are some of the items in need. Gasoperated compressors will also be accepted to allow residents to run lights and small appliances at night.

They can be dropped off in a box at 292 Townsend Drive in Breslau.

The Cardoso’s are working with family friend, Liz Peloso, a Guelph native in collecting the items.

Peloso has already changed the life of one young boy, named Foday, from Sierra Leone. She brought him to Canada as he needed life-saving

medical treatment at Sick Kids Hospital and he ended staying with the Peloso family for a year before returning home healthy.

On Nov. 20 the two families will be holding a packing party to see how many items they are sending and how large a container they will need.

“Right now I think we will be sending a 20-foot container packed with the tools and it should take close to a month before it reaches its final destination,” said Ed. The shipping container will be packed and sent off in early December to the training centre in Sierra Leone where 52 people are waiting the development of the program.

“These are young men and widows who are looking to make a difference and change their own lives. I am glad

that my family and community can help those in need,” said Gloria.

The idea of the program is to give training to those in the area and they in return will build tables and chairs for the local school and sew uniforms for the students.

“It’s all circular,” said Gloria. “We can help them now and they learn to help themselves.”

Eventually, Ed would like to see solar panels set up in Gbendembu as that will allow villages to have electricity all day long and would not require extensive wiring across the region.

“It would be pretty simply to set up a panel and hook a house up to it,” said Ed. “The only drawback is the cost of those panels can be quite pricey.”

“It is a very emotional time for these women but it is a good emotion as you see doors opening for the first time for these women and you can’t heal until you first feel your own pain,” she said. “The responses have been overwhelming. Everybody connects with pain and I have received nothing but thanks and I continue to meet with some of the women you have attended the past talks.”

There will be counselors present during the two day event to help women who need a follow-up.

“Sometimes confronting these

emotions, if they don’t then pursue resolution, can cause more damage,” said Heidi Konig, director of connecting at Woodside Bible Fellowship. “This is not going to solve their problems coming to this weekend it is just a first step and we will connect them to people who can walk them through their pain.”

There is an early bird fee of $45 to attend the event and tickets will be available at the door for $60. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 11.

“We give them a safe place to feel, experience, acknowledge and then move forward,” said Metzger. “Don’t be afraid to face your pain but don’t ever do it alone. Anyone dealing with this type of pain should contact either a counselor, a pastor or a trusted family member going through it alone is very dangerous.”

Rust shows as Kings drop shootout loss to Brantford Up by two, the team couldn’t protect the lead, falling 3-2; record now stands at 16-2-1

he Elmira Sugar Kings let a two-goal lead slip away in their 3-2 shootout loss to the Brantford Golden Eagles last Sunday night.

Brantford scored twice in a seven-minute span in the middle of the third period to tie the game, and the Golden Eagles Trent Hawke scored the only goal in the shootout to seal the win for the visitors.

It was the first game in a week for the Kings, following a 6-2 win over Owen Sound on Oct. 23, and the rust was apparent, said the head coach. “(We had) a couple of days off and didn’t play well in the first, we played real well in the second, and the third period I thought was pretty even,” said Dean DeSilva after the game.

gling to find that full 60-minute (effort).”

The Kings struggled to find any consistency through the first 15 minutes of the first period, and didn’t mount much offence until the final five minutes of the period when they finally seemed to get their legs.

The best chance of the period for the Kings came with 1:15 left on the clock when Riley Sonnenburg and Brett Priestap broke in on a two-on-one but Priestap was denied by the Golden Hawks goaltender Bryce O’Hagan.

Brantford held a 14-10 edge in shots after the first.

The Kings carried their momentum through to the second period and Elmira’s Will Cook finally broke through at the 15:02 mark with a quick wrist shot from near the top of the faceoff circle past the glove of O’Hagan. Scott Nagy and

Michael Hasson drew the assists on the goal.

Elmira extended their lead to 2-0 after some hard work in the Brantford zone just over two minutes later. The defensive pairing of Mac Clutsam and Brodie Whitehead did a good job of holding the puck in the Golden Eagles zone before Cass Frey tipped home his 3rd of the year at 17:09 by parking himself in front of the net.

Lukas Baleshta and Whitehead picked up the assists.

The coach had tremendous praise for the secondyear grinder.

“Cass Frey had probably his best game up front for us.

He did a lot of good things, and was rewarded with a goal,” said DeSilva.

The Kings were a confident crew at the end of 40 minutes and held a decisive edge in shots in the second, 25-8. In the third, how-

ever, that confidence would quickly dissolve as the team coughed up a two-goal lead for the second time in four games.

With Priestap in the box for hooking, Brantford’s Mike Riley scored an unassisted powerplay goal at 4:49 to give his team renewed hope. Riley raced down the ice to create a 2-on-1 in the Elmira zone before firing a wrist shot into the top corner off the crossbar and in past Horrigan’s glove.

Brantford completed the comeback at 11:45 when the Kings surrendered an uncharacteristic shorthanded goal to Mike Rebry. After a turnover near the Brantford blueline by Nagy, Dillan Walker chipped the puck up to Rebry who had gotten in behind the Kings defence for a clear breakaway, and he made no mistake, knotting the game up at 2-2.

“I think some of our veteran forwards made a mistake on their shorthanded goal, we talked about it and they went out and made the mistake we had talked about,” said DeSilva.

Overtime solved nothing and all three Kings shooters – Sonnenburg, Hasson, and Andrew Smith – were all stopped by O’Hagan. Horrigan surrendered the winning goal on somewhat of a weak shot in the shootout, but the coach said his goalie gave them a chance to win, especially early in the first period.

“He made those big saves when we needed them and that’s common, we have some young defenceman back there, and we needed that.”

The loss lowered the Kings’ record to 16-2-1, but

Paying deerly for a large supply of apples

L

ike many bowhunters, I often use apples to try to lure deer into arrow range. This is no-brainer – and by that I mean no one with a brain would go to all this trouble.

It begins simply enough, with the hunter bringing in a single bag of apples and dumping it on the ground in front of his or her stand.

If you are really looking for frustration, as I am, you’ll set up a trail camera there too. This will let you know which segment of the local wildlife you are providing social assistance to.

Typically, 25 per cent of the apples you put down will go directly to squirrels. You’ll know this because as soon as you get up in your tree stand you’ll see apples tucked away in every tree as far as the eye can see. But that’s OK. Feeding squirrels is just the cost of doing business – I consider it the outdoors equivalent of the gas tax.

It’s the raccoons that are really

This is something you’ll discover on the next day after dropping that first pile of apples, when you return to check your trail camera.

But first, you’ll see a photo that, on the surface, seems like cause for celebration. That’s right; you’ll have a couple of images of a buck visiting the apples in the dead of night.

Well, don’t get too excited. First, that’s nowhere near legal hunting hours. Second, if you look closely, somewhere in the background, there will also be the shadowy figure of a raccoon – a guy I call the Kingpin.

This is important to note. You see, that raccoon is the mastermind who actually hired the deer to visit.

Why? It’s all about the apples. You see, while the deer poses majestically for the camera, the Kingpin and his pals will consume the remainder of your bait.

That crafty raccoon has somehow learned that one grainy photo of a buck is enough to convince guys like me to replenish bait piles daily for duration of the season or until a tag is filled, whatever comes first.

He has somehow learned that the sight of one good deer in trail camera photo causes hunters to do strange things like repeatedly dumping bags of edible apples on the ground deep in the woods.

That one photo might even cause you to decide that the only way to get that deer is to sit in a tree stand all day.

raccoons. The deer, on the other hand, won’t show up until after legal shooting time. Then, he will pose for a few more photos with the raccoons and then slip off into the night.

This will cause you to change tactics.

Instead of hunting the prime hours of early morning or late afternoon, you’ll try waiting for the deer at your bait site in the middle of the day, as I did yesterday. That’s the day he’ll decide to visit during prime hours, as the new photos on my trail camera indicated.

By this time, you’ll have carried enough apples to permit several raccoons to retire in comfort. The good news is, eventually, you’ll get a shot at that deer – the bad news is that it will be nowhere near the bait pile. You see, when it comes to being tempted by apples, big deer are crafty – and raccoons are rotten to the core.

fter a strong performance in three straight games late in October, and with a week to prepare, the Wellesley Apple Jacks were looking forward to a matchup against the Burford Bulldogs last Saturday night at home.

Unfortunately, the team failed to display their trademark work ethic and dropped a 5-2 decision to the visitors.

“It was really disheartening to see the lack of cohesion, the lack of effort that we had in that game from top to bottom,” said head coach Kevin Fitzpatrick.

The Bulldogs came into the matchup with only three wins on the season, yet looked very much like the more dominant team throughout the match.

The first period featured a lot of run-and-gun offence as both teams traded chances early and often. Burford

had the best chance early when Tommy Smith put one past goaltender Josh Heer but couldn’t beat the iron with 10:56 remaining.

The Bulldogs would eventually make good, however, and Brandon Zehr scored the first of the game at 18:02. After Wellesley iced the puck, Burford’s Wes MacDonald won the race for the puck to the right of Heer and fired a quick pass to Zehr, who was waiting just outside of the blue

a little early with their own version of the popular event.

The school held their second We Day celebration in the gym, which then spread out onto the streets of Elmira as Park Manor students joined with hundreds of other children and teachers from five other schools in a Freedom Walk to raise awareness about children’s rights around the world.

The event was organized in partnership with Free the Children, a Toronto-based aid organization founded by Craig Keilburger that works to empower developing nations and give them the tools to help themselves.

Hundreds of students from Park Manor, Riverside, John Mahood, Elmira District Secondary School, St. Teresa’s and the Elmira Daycare Centre lined the streets in front of their respective schools, holding up signs and cheering as cars passed by while honking their horns in support. The Elmira fire department even drove up and down the streets

with lights and sirens blaring.

The scene on the street mimicked the event held in the gym, which was a high-energy, uptempo assembly where members of the school’s We In Action team described some of the ways in which children in the developing world are exploited through their labour, and the hardships endured on a daily basis.

“Today was aimed to raise awareness among the students about Free the Children, what they do and what our students and the youth of Elmira are capable of doing,” said Madi Mercante, a Grade 8 student at Park Manor and member of the We In Action team.

“On the Freedom Walk, our goal is to bring the youth of Elmira together to show that together we can make a change,” added Audrey Gruneberg, another Grade 8 student.

The talk also included a presentation by Emily Charron of Elmira and Mackenzie Schultz of Conestogo, both Grade 11 students at Elmira District Secondary School who had the opportunity to travel to India for three weeks this past summer to help build a school with Free the Children and learn about the Indian

culture.

The trip was sponsored by Research in Motion and 50 students travelled to either India or Africa to participate in Free the Children’s Build a Village initiative.

Charron and Schultz painted a bleak picture for the Park Manor students of what it is like living in slums, and the hard work required just to finding enough clean water each day.

“We learned that poverty doesn’t discriminate between age or gender. We saw so many men, women and children facing extreme poverty,” Charron told the students.

Park Manor’s We In Action team started last year when about 15 students attended the first We Day Waterloo back in February, and before long the team grew to more than 30 students, leading to the school’s first We Day in the spring.

When the team reconvened after the summer break, more than 60 students attended the first meeting, said organizers.

“They were all very eager and there were representations from every grade that wanted to help out,” said Liz Anderson, a Grade 6 teach-

had to leave the ice for stitches.

In the third, the Jacks scored a pair of powerplay goals before the midway point of the period to knot the game up at two. Geoff Parr scored on a hard slapshot from the point at 4:59 with assists going to Rob Hinschberger and McLeod, and Hinschberger tied the game at 9:01 on a slick pass from defenceman James Mildon after he

had snuck in behind the penalty killing defenceman.

The Jacks surrendered another goal at 14:17, and the Bulldogs iced the game with a pair of emptynet goals to seal the 5-2 win.

The coach said the team got caught looking at Burford as a weaker team, and was burned because of it.

Wellesley entered the game with a seven point cushion over the Bulldogs, but have now lost five of their last

six and watched their record fall to 6-5-0.

“Quite frankly, I think we were looking down at the standings and we very quickly will find ourselves looking up at the people above us if we put that collective effort in that we did Saturday.”

The Jacks get right back at it tonight (Saturday) against Delhi (7-3-0) at home starting at 7:30 p.m., looking to avenge their 4-2 defeat to the Travellers back on Oct. 21.

Riverside students go the distance

ost schools commemorate Terry Fox by running on one day, but at Riverside Public School in Elmira students remember his Marathon of Hope by running for weeks on end.

This year they ran for seven weeks to be exact, and they ran not only for Terry Fox, but as part of the 25th anniversary of Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion tour.

Hansen kicked off his lastest cross-Canada tour at the end of this summer, and will be appearing in communities across Canada, including Elmira on Dec. 6.

“We’ve been doing the Terry Fox Run now for a number of years, and we look for a new twist every year,” said Connie Lepp, a special education teacher at Riverside.

This year Lepp proposed the idea of having the students run a cumulative distance of 12,000 km – the same as Hansen’s travel across Canada – as a way of recognizing not only the sac-

“I really wasn’t sure if we could make it, but it seems to be that we surpass our previous record every year in some way.”

They also held their annual toonies for Terry run in September and raised more than $567 for cancer research.

The school tracked their process by setting up a 400-metre lap in the schoolyard and encouraged the children to run during their nutrition breaks or on their own free time, and to record the distances using popsicle sticks.

“It’s really a neat thing to see this grow. This year we had 39 kids who ran two marathons or more. We had 20 kids who ran 100 km or more. We had a Grade 2 that ran 154 km,” said Lepp.

In total, the students ran 12,761 km to surpass their goal.

“I didn’t know if we were kind of exceeding what we were capable of, but they really rose to the challenge.”

n the upcoming winter programming session, the Breslau Recreation Association has more than 50 activities and sessions planned. What they do not have enough of, though, are volunteers to run those programs and help with the workload.

“What I’ve been continuously finding out is that people have the perception that once a community centre it is opened, it is fully staffed,” said president Lisa Nadon.

“That is not the case.”

The centre has been completely volunteer-run since first opening the doors of the $2.2-million facility back in March of 2010.

This past September the township assigned a part-time staffer to help, but Nadon says the 16 hours of work per week they contribute, while appreciated, doesn’t even begin to make a dent.

Right now the association has nine volunteers on its board, and a stable of about

25 committed volunteers from which to draw. Yet considering the fact that upwards of 300 people walk through the doors each week for a variety of activities ranging from sports to story time, and that they’ve bumped the number of programs from 30 in the fall to 50 this winter, they’re always looking for more help.

That includes high school students looking to complete their required community service before graduation.

“We sign off on hours,” Nadon laughed.

Beyond helping out with the workload, volunteering at the centre has the added function of creating a more unified community and strengthening those bonds, say volunteers.

“I’ve got two young children and I thought if I wanted to see some of these things happen I needed to get involved and help out,” said Melissa Cowburn, who has been volunteering ever since the centre opened.

“The community centre has

been like a watering hole or a gathering place for people,” added Todd Brown, another volunteer and the senior pastor at the Breslau Evangelical Missionary Church.

With Breslau poised to become a major development in the next decade, the association hopes to get ahead of the curve in terms of building a strong foundation at the community centre and by encouraging not only volunteers to join them, but to convince the township to devote more staff time as well.

Brown compared the Breslau centre to Stanley Park in Kitchener, which has two fulltime staffers and six part-time, as well as a fully volunteer board, much like Breslau’s.

“There is an inequity there when you compare community centres and the number of staff members,” he said.

“We want to be ready for that (population growth) and have infrastructure in place.”

Larry Mercey still loves a good show Country music legend’s trio to perform next weekend at Maryhill’s Commercial Tavern Steve Kannon

ore than five decades later, the schedule isn’t as hectic but performing is every bit as fun as it’s always been for Larry Mercey.

A founder of the legendary Mercey Brothers – the pride of Hanover – Mercey went solo in 1990 after the band packed it in, eventually ramping things back up with the formation of the Larry Mercey Trio and subsequent return to recording.

His love of entertaining will be on display Nov. 13 on stage at Maryhill’s Commercial Tavern.

Mercey got his start in 1956, performing with the CKNX barn dance broadcast from Wingham. The following year, he and his brother Ray founded the Mercey Brothers. The duo was joined by brother Lloyd in 1966, and the Mercey Brothers continued to record and perform until 1989. During that time, they issued 17 albums and some 50 singles, many of which went to number-one on the charts.

The brothers have been inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.

When his brothers took different paths, Mercey continued with the music business. His first solo outing was the independent Full Speed Ahead in 1990, featuring the the hit single “These Crazy Arms of Mine.” In 1991 he was nominated for Country Male Vocalist awards at the Junos and the Country Music Awards. By 1994 he had landed a deal with Rodeo Records, who picked up the tab on album number two, Let’s Deal Again.

Slowing down for a while, Mercey found he couldn’t stray too far from perform-

ing and recording, recruiting George Lonsbury (guitar and vocals) and Al Alderson (bass and vocals) to form the Larry Mercey Trio in 2004.

“This is an example of never say never. I’ve said for years I was through with recording and would never be back in the studio,” said Mercey after the release of It’s Not Over Yet, featuring “On My Father’s Side.”

“It’s a song that my brother Ray and I wrote the verses to, a gospel song – it’s really gone over well,” said the former Elmira resident who now lives in Iderton, near London, Ont. Over the course of five decades, he’s played across the country, in Europe and the U.S., including at Nashville’s famed Grand Ole Opry. There are Juno Awards, Big Country Awards and the C.F. Martin Guitar Lifetime Achievement Award.

Through the ups and downs, getting out on stage and playing for an audience has never lost its luster.

“I just love it. It’s my life,” said Mercey, acknowledging the many miles on the road in the early days weren’t always easy. “I have no regrets with it. I feel very, very blessed, really.”

The gigs are less numerous these days, in part due to changes in the industry that’s seen less demand for traditional country music and fewer venues booking such performers. In that regard, he’s got nothing but praise for Paul Weber, who keeps things going at the Commercial Tavern.

“I don’t know any other place like it. They really support traditional country music.”

career can expect to hear all of the standards when he hits the stage, from the early days of the Mercey Brothers through the solo days and the trio. For next weekend’s show, it’ll be an “around the campfire” style, the three of them playing and harmonizing together. The show will also include appearances by Naomi Bristow and Randy Satchell, who’ll sit in with the band.

Billed as “the yodelin’ cowgirl,” 14-year-old Bristow, who hails from a small farm near Beeton, Ont., has been something of sensation in country music circles. She’s toured the country and won a packet of awards, including Best Traditional Album of the Year in the U.S. for her third CD, Ridin’ High. She recently travelled to Nashville to record a pair of duets with Grand Ole Opry star Jim Ed Brown.

Satchell, a native of Gadshill, Ont. who began performing with his father’s band at the age of 9, appeared on CKNX-TV’s Circle 8 Ranch, and was part of the barn dance circuit, winning national singing contests in 1981 and 1982. He’s released two albums and continues to perform regularly, opening for a variety of country acts.

“It’s going to be a great show, with lots of variety,” said Mercey, who’s deep into rehearsals.

“I really look forward to it. I put a lot of work into it – there is some pressure to it because you really want to do well.”

The Larry Mercey Trio and their special guests perform Nov. 13 starting at 3 p.m. at the Commercial Tavern in Maryhill. Tickets are $20.

When will a lion settle for a lion’s share?

Depends on which “lion’s share” you’re talking about, says Mark Davidson in Right, Wrong, and Risky.

The phrase is commonly used to mean “the largest portion,” such as when “The Financial Times” stated that “a mere 30 of Egypt’s 300 book publishers receive the lion’s share of the industry’s profit.” But no selfrespecting lion would settle for partial spoils, as can be gleaned even from one of “Aesop’s Fables.”

According to the story, a lion organized a hunt with a goat, a sheep and a heifer, then declared that all four portions of the captured meat would be entirely his: one-quarter for his personal share, a quarter for his mate and cubs, a quarter for organizing the hunt, “and as for the fourth portion, let him who will, dispute it with me.” The other animals, intimidated by the lion’s frown, left him to take his “share.”

Enough said. In its original use, “lion’s share” meant “all” or “leaving nothing to be desired.” So be careful how you use this expression around those knowledgeable about the ori-
