ore than two years after a group of concerned citizens first voiced their opposition to the development of residential homes in Victoria Glen Park in Elmira, the issue was finally laid to rest last week when Woolwich formally completed its purchase of the region-owned parcels of land.

The $1 transaction was agreed to Nov. 16 at regional council, and it transfers ownership of two plots of land at the intersection of Dunke Street and Victoria Glen Street to the township; the first is at the southwest corner of the intersection and is approximately 0.83 acres, and the second parcel at the northeast corner is approximately 30’ by 100’.

With this transfer also comes the promise that the two parcels – which are currently zoned as residential – will be rezoned as open space along with the rest of the seven-acre park to effectively protect it from any future development.

rade 6 students at Park Manor Senior Public School in Elmira have made it their mission to ensure that no child in the community goes without a winter coat this winter season.

To that end, several students organized their first Coats for Kids clothing drive in order to provide gently used coats to those in the community who cannot afford one.

“It’s Canada. Some kids have to walk around in the winter without a proper coat on, and it’s sad,” said Jennifer Wilson, one of the students who organized the campaign.

Back in October, Wilson and fellow students Jacob Searles and Saxon Musselman made a keynote presentation in the library to the school’s principal as to why they wanted to start

collecting coats and cash donations.

The students were motivated by the school’s We in Action team, which is associated with the Toronto-based charity Free The Children that aims to increase awareness of child exploitation and poverty in the developing world.

“I was very inspired,” said principal James Bond of the student’s presentation and the organization of their clothing drive.

“These students wanted to help other kids who don’t have as much as they have, which is perfect.”

The students teamed up with the 30 or so students that are a part of the We in Action team from Grades 6, 7 and 8 to make posters and to spread the word about the coat drive.

They have set up a desk in the main hallway as well as the gymnasium, and have given up their

Other students who joined the cause said they did so because they wanted to help those who may have fallen on hard times in the economic downturn and may not be able to afford a winter coat.

“I thought it was a really good cause, there are a lot of people losing jobs and there aren’t as many jobs, so they won’t have enough

money to buy winter coats,” said Grade 6 student Riley King.

Not only has the principal been impressed by the student’s initiative, their teachers have noticed as well.

“Sometimes it’s hard for a Grade 6 student who is fairly new to the school to come in front of the principal and ask to made a presentation for a cause that they feel strongly about,” said Grade 6 French teacher Melanie Jespersen, a supervisor for the We in Action team.

“We’ve been impressed with the organization of it and the maturity that they have brought forward for a good worthy cause.”

So far the students have collected three coats and more than $200 and they will be collecting donations until school breaks for Christmas holidays on Dec. 23.

Neighbourhood concerns about a fence that runs down to the sidewalk have Woolwich poised to draft up its first fence bylaw.

The move comes after the township received a complaint from a Queen Street, Elmira resident concerned about a fence erected by a neighbour in the front yard. The fence extended along the property line between two homes, ending at the sidewalk.

While the bylaw enforcement department did end up getting the homeowner to lower a portion of the fence due to visibility and safety concerns, the township currently has no regulations governing the size or location of fences, director of council and information services Christine Broughton told councillors meeting this week.

Director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley received council support to begin looking at a bylaw to govern fences, saying it’s standard practice in most municipalities.

Most people are “instinctively” against high fences in the front yard, he said.

“If everyone had a fence to the sidewalk, I think it would result in unappealing streetscapes.”

> NextEnergy aids Habitat for third year Elmira’s NextEnergy Inc. and Habitat for Humanity Canada are partnering to provide a ground source geothermal heating and cooling system for another Habitat home.

The partnership is a five-year, multifaceted commitment that is currently in its third year. The first system was donated to a home in PEI in 2009, the second system to a home in Owen Sound. NextEnergy is now making its third donation of a geothermal heating and cooling system to a home being built in Welland, Ont. The installation of the geothermal system began on Oct. 20, with construction of the house scheduled for completion by April 2012.

bid to designate the area around West Montrose’s covered bridge a cultural heritage landscape (CHL) moved into the final stages following a public meeting Tuesday night.

After reviewing the latest round of input, director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley expects to bring back a recommendation to Woolwich council in three weeks’ time. A favourable decision next month on the designation isn’t likely to be the final word, however, as a legal challenge is likely to follow: two companies are looking to extract

gravel on land within the CHL. Guelph-based Capital Paving has already filed an application for a gravel pit, though the process has been on hold pending the outcome of the CHL exercise. And The Murray Group of Moorefield has an interest in mining an adjacent property. The company has not yet made an official application to the township.

Some 30 people attended the meeting Nov. 22, a light turnout as the process winds down. A second public session was called because substantial changes were made to the proposed Official

Plan amendment following public input at the first meeting back in June, Kennaley explained.

The changes largely involved tightening up language to remove ambiguity and give landowners more certainty by including the proviso that any future changes to the CHL designation would require the full consultation of another Official Plan amendment.

The boundaries of the proposed cultural heritage landscape remain unchanged.

The area covers some 1,670 acres bounded

by Northfield Drive to the west, Line 86 to the north, Katherine Street

to the east and an irregular line to the south to a point beyond a line extending from Maryhill Road. Along with the bridge and older homes in the immediate vicinity, the CHL designation encompasses the surrounding environment and views that makes up the historical context of the structure.

The continued exclusion of the newer subdivision in West Montrose suits longtime resident Les Bauman just fine.

Addressing councillors Tuesday night, he argued the designation should not include that area, as it has no cultural significance.

Two members of the

West Montrose Residents’ Association, also known as the BridgeKeepers, pressed council to keep going with the CHL project, praising the work done thus far.

Hans Pottkamper said the wider area around the bridge should be kept free of development in order to avoid repeating the kinds of mistakes seen at Kitchener’s historic Pioneer Tower, where sprawl has overrun the historic setting.

“This area must be protected before it’s too late,” he said. “Without the countryside, there is no context for the bridge.”

His sentiments were echoed by fellow resi-

dent Tony Dowling, who called the bridge and its surroundings “Woolwich’s most important cultural landscape.”

Alluding to the potential for legal challenges related to gravel pit applications, he noted the CHL process began in 2005, three years prior to Capital Paving’s bid.

He urged the township has to pursue the designation not because of residents’ demands or the aggregate controversy, but because it’s required under the provincial Planning Act, plain and simple.

Kennaley plans to have a recommendation back to councillors Dec. 13.

or nearly two decades Santa Clause has paid a special visit to Elmira, and this year is no different as the 19th annual Santa Clause parade rolls into town next Saturday.

Organized by the Elmira Kiwanis Club, this year’s parade should prove to be as big as ever, with seven bands and about 20 floats confirmed for the event.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. sharp in front of Riverside Public School on William Street, before winding along Arthur Street and through downtown Elmira towards its finishing point at the Legion located on First Street. The parade takes about an hour

and a half to complete, and is a great deal of fun for the whole family, says the chair of the parade committee.

“This parade is as good, if not better, than the one in K-W,” said Lyndon Ziegel. “Why drive to K-W if you don’t have to?”

The parade started when Ziegel and other members of the now-defunct Jaycee service club decided that instead of sending busloads of kids and parents down to Kitchener-Waterloo to see the Santa Claus parade, they should have their own.

When the Jaycees folded about seven years ago, Ziegler joined the Kiwanis Club and took the parade with him.

He said it’s a good way to support the local community and the downtown shops in the area, and that the growth in Elmira in recent years has seen the popularity of the parade grow as well.

“There seem to be a lot of new entries this year from Guelph, Fergus and Elora,” he added.

Ziegel is still looking for volunteers to dress up in festive costumes and hand out candy along the parade route, as well as for volunteers to help throughout the day. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact him at 669-0598.

Why did you decide to start being a crossing guard?

Just for the fun of it. I really enjoy the kids.

Is it hard to deal with the weather?

It’s cold in the mornings, and this week was bad. I just bundle up, wear lots of clothes to stay warm.

You also sell the 50/50 tickets at the Sugar Kings games, right?

Yeah, I’ve been doing that for three years. When I go out in the second period and tell people it’s their last chance, everyone jumps at

them.

What do you think are the Sugar Kings chances of repeating as league champs this season?

Well, from what I’ve seen in the last couple games they have to work on clearing the puck out of their own end.

There are some good teams out there, but it would be nice if they won again.

ne could not turn on a Canadian radio station back in 1986 without hearing the chorus of that famous song, a tribute to Rick Hansen and his Man In Motion world tour where he travelled the circumference of the earth in his wheelchair.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the tour, and to mark that milestone Hansen has organized an anniversary relay crossing

over Canada.

The relay began this August in Cape Spear, Newfoundland and Labrador and will retrace the Canadian segment of the original tour, covering 12,000 kilometres to finish in Vancouver on May 22, 2012.

Hansen will be represented and celebrated by many in motion this time around, including 7,000 participants from across the country who have made their own difference in the lives of others.

Each participant will be a relay medal bearer who will run, walk, wheel or bike to complete their segment of the tour and will pass along the singular Rick Hansen medal, produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, as the relay makes its way across the country.

lay will be arriving in Woolwich. Dianna Weltz and Corin Metzger have been given the honour of being medal-bearers.

Weltz will take on the St. Jacobs stretch and Metzger will complete the Elmira segment.

Weltz has been a part of the community most of her life and has served on numerous boards such as the Elmira Figure Skating Club, Elmira Aquaducks and Memorial

fountain committee.

Metzger, who is confined to a wheelchair, grew up in Elmira and has made a difference in the community by educating students, school staff and the community about the physical barriers that people with disabilities live with everyday.

“I have never done anything like this before,” said Metzger.

“Representing my hometown and supporting the Rick Hansen

Foundation and spinal cord research is something that is really important to me – this is an amazing opportunity.”

Metzger has taken part in the Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event for the past seven years and helped to promote that event by holding a wheelchair basketball demonstration.

This summer Metzger was selected to be a part of the Canadian Women’s U25 team at the World

Wheelchair Basketball Championships in St. Catharines. She is also a member of both the Ontario mixed and Canadian women’s sledge hockey teams.

The Regional Municipality of Waterloo (Region) is proposing a rapid transit system that connects the Region’s three major urban centres of the Cities of Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo. Stage 1 of the rapid transit system consists of both Light Rail Transit (LRT) and adapted Bus Rapid Transit (aBRT) operating along the rapid transit corridor. LRT will operate between Conestoga Mall in the City of Waterloo and Fairview Park Mall in the City of Kitchener (19 km), and aBRT will operate between Fairview Park Mall and the Ainslie Street Terminal in the City of Cambridge (17 km). There will be a total of 21 stations along the 36 km corridor.

Bamberg bridge connects area to Avon Trail onnecting St. Mary’s to Conestogo, the Avon Trail covers 110 kilometres of farmland, brush and open fields, crosses numerous creeks and streams and links the Thames Valley and the Grand Valley Trail.

As part of the effort to keep the trail contiguous, the Avon Trail Club this summer installed a new 24-foot bridge across Bamberg Creek, just south of Waterloo Regional Road 12, and east of Wilmot Road 16. Constructed by the maintenance crew, Dennis Rawe, Warren Breedon, Dave Williamson, Rick Horst and Luke Debrabandere, it was built to Bruce Trail Conservancy standards.

structure that had become a safety hazard.

“We are happy with the enhancement this bridge has made to this section of the trail,” said Bernard Goward, Avon trail maintenance coordinator.

“Our members vary in age and background, but all share an interest in being active outdoors and this bridge helps by connecting the trail across the creek.”

The bridge cost close to $800 to build and was funded by the Thames Valley Trail Association based in London.

“We were very lucky to have the association help us since they are always looking to help advance hiking trails – they were very generous,” said Goward.

The club is also fortunate to have the cooperation of landowners who allow hikers to walk through their properties, he added.

Bamberg Creek, the club has erected another bridge southeast of Stratford on Perth Road crossing a drainage ditch at the back of a cornfield.

Currently the club has 55 members and schedules a variety of hikes with varying degrees of difficulty and duration over the course of the year.

Some are short, twohour hikes while others are five or six hours in length. Often, the hikes end with a social hour at a local pub.

The trail is marked at regular intervals by white rectangular blazes on trees and fences and the club recommends never travelling the route alone. Motorized vehicles, camping,

or fires are not permitted on the trail.

The club established 35 years ago tries to stimulate an interest in hiking while establishing and maintaining the trails for hiking. They also encourage awareness of the natural environment and promote the conservation of the environment.

“Hiking is good for

body and soul, especially if you are having a tough day, just go out for a walk and clear your mind and surround yourself with nature,” said Dick Pullin a member of the Avon Trial for some 20 years.

There is also an antiflip covenant to prevent the land from being sold and developed in the future.

Back in the summer of 2009 the township first proposed purchasing the land from the region in order to build homes on approximately 2.6 acres of the park.

That deal would have brought in approximately $1.5 million to the township coffers, and would have helped finance the approximately $35 million in capital projects that were on the books for that year, including the Woolwich Memorial Centre, the Breslau Community Centre, Floradale fire station and the new township office.

Faced with a vocal, impassioned and well-organized backlash from residents in Elmira, the council of the day eventually rescinded their plan for development in November of 2009, opting instead to borrow nearly $4 million to cover the outstanding costs

of the projects and to raise property taxes by an extra 0.79 per cent.

The issue and the property had lain dormant until this agreement was completed earlier this month, but constantly hung over the local resident’s heads as no firm resolution had been reached until now.

“From a township perspective this is a good news story of moving forward with preservation of the open green space,” said Woolwich chief administrative officer David Brenneman.

“I think it’s just wonderful,” added Karen Orr, a resident of Snyder Avenue North who frequents the park regularly and who was one of the original organizers of the Preserve Victoria Glen Park movement.

“We don’t have much forested area left in Elmira. It’s different to have green space versus forest; green space is nice and you can have a park, but this is a true forest and there aren’t too many left in town.”

The deal also finalizes one of Mayor Todd Cowan’s primary election promises from his mayoral campaign last fall. Cowan was a part of the Preserve Victoria Glen Park group and lobbied for them by going door-to-door and collecting signatures in opposition to the development back in 2009.

He said the previous council’s approach to dealing with the land was one of the main reasons why he decided to run for mayor.

“That was the straw for me that said ‘you know what, we need a different direction here. We need someone that’s going to preserve those green spaces (and) find the money somewhere else’,” said Cowan.

“This is finally going to put this thing to rest because it’ll never be hanging over our heads.”

The legal paperwork of the deal still needs to be completed, as well as an amendment to the zoning bylaw and the township’s Official Plan, but those are merely housekeep-

“I hope that this is an inspiring thing for other people and organizations. There is strength in numbers and if enough people believe in it and come together, that’s how things change in the world.”

Ontarians will need more than platitudes

T

he Throne Speech that this week launched Ontario’s 40th Parliament was a subdued affair, reflecting the economic woes and an austerity-driven mandate. The province is running a $16-billion deficit and hopes to balance the budget by 2017-2018.

We can expect cuts, some of them deep, in various departments. But the two largest portfolios that suck up the lion’s share of the budget, health care and education, are not on the chopping block. That’s not to say reforms aren’t coming, as the province awaits a report from economist Don Drummond that, among other things, will look at ways of curbing health care spending that’s growing by more than seven per cent a year, an unsustainable rate.

In the meantime, the McGuinty government hopes to reduce the size of the public service by five per

cent by next March and an additional two per cent in the following two years for a total savings of $500 million. Provincial agencies such as the LCBO are also being called on to find savings of $200 million in that timeframe.

Those are helpful steps, but more will have to be done, especially as the government shies away from tax increases. Ideally, the economy would pick up, dropping unemployment numbers and filling the coffers. That’s most unlikely, given the increasingly grim economic forecasts worldwide, significantly in Europe and Asia.

These are serious times, as the government notes in the speech read Tuesday by Lieutenant Governor David C. Onley. While at times adopting a hopeful tone, the speech essentially asks Ontarians to reduce their expectations and to tighten

The outline was short on specifics, but there were a few details, such as plans to reduce college and university tuition by 30 per cent for families earning less than $160,000 per year and selecting three new sites for undergraduate campuses to build a more competitive workforce, a Healthy Homes Renovation Tax Credit to help seniors live independently longer and create thousands of jobs in the home renovation sector, increasing home care services for seniors to take pressure off hospitals and long-term care homes, saving taxpayers money; and adding two-way, all-day GO train service to keep people moving in the GTA and Greater Golden Horseshoe and create 68,000 new jobs.

Given rising electricity rates, the government plans to continue to offer the Clean Energy Benefit, taking 10 per cent off of bi-monthly bills.

Realistically, however, the province has little control over the wider economic picture. Counterproductive measures at the federal level will continue to harm Ontario. The same is true on the international scene, where those who created the mess still fiddle with the levers.

That’s not so say there’s nothing Queen’s Park can do. Pushing for a tougher regulatory framework and calling out Ottawa on its many transgressions is imperative, and comes at no cost to taxpayers.

In a minority position, the McGuinty government will be scrutinized like never before. Caught between conflicting NDP and PC demands, just who will the politicians choose to serve?

Finally, acknowlegement that the war on drugs failed L

ike those generals who used to discover that nuclear weapons were not a good thing about 20 minutes after they took off their uniforms and started collecting their pensions, we have had a parade of former presidents who knew that the war on drugs was a bad thing – but only mentioned it after they were already ex-presidents. Now, at last, we have one who is saying it out loud while he is still in office.

President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia, the country that has suffered even more than Mexico from the drug wars, is an honest and serious man. He is also very brave, because any political leader who advocates the legalization of narcotic drugs will become a prime target of the prohibition industry. He has chosen to do it anyway.

“We are basically still thinking within the same framework as we have done for the past 40 years,” he told “The Observer” in a recent interview in Bogota. “A new approach should try and take away the violent profit that comes with drug trafficking ... If that means legalizing [drugs] ... then I will welcome it.”

Santos has no intention of becoming a kamikaze politician: “What I won’t do is become the vanguard of that movement [to legalize drugs] because then I will be crucified. But I would gladly participate in those discussions, because we are the country that’s still suffering most ... from the high consumption in the U,S., the UK and Europe in general.”

There are no such discussions, of course. Santos is being disingenuous about this; he is really trying to start a serious international debate on drug legalization, not to join one. But the time may be ripe for such a debate, because it is now almost universally

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER acknowledged (outside of political circles) that the “war on drugs” has been an extremely bloody failure.

Twenty years ago Milton Friedman, a Nobel Prize winner, the most influential economist of the 20th century, and an icon of the right, said: “If you look at the drug war from a purely economic point of view, the role of the government is to protect the drug cartel.” It is only because the government makes the drugs illegal that the criminal cartel has a highly profitable monopoly on meeting the demand.

Friedman also said: “Government never has any right to interfere with an individual for that individual’s own good. The case for prohibiting drugs is exactly as strong and as weak as the case for prohibiting people from overeating. We all know that over-eating causes more deaths than drugs do.”

But there are a quarter-million Americans in jail for possessing or selling drugs. Nobody is in jail for producing, marketing or eating junk food.

Friedman was right, of course, but 40 years of the war on drugs have also shown that arguments based on logic, natural justice, or history (the obvious parallel with alcohol prohibition in the U.S. in the 1920s and early 30s) have very little effect on policy in the main drug-importing nations. Many politicians there know that the war on drugs is futile and stupid, but the political cost of leaving the herd and saying so out loud is too high.

The political leaders who are starting to say that it’s time to end the war and legalize the drugs are almost all in the producer nations, where the damage has been far graver than in the drug-importing countries. In practice, therefore, they are almost all Latin American leaders – but even there they have waited until they left office to make their views known.

Former Mexican president Vicente Fox supported the U.S.-led war on drugs when he was in office in 20002006, but more recently he has condemned it as an unmitigated disaster.

“We should consider legalizing the production, sale and distribution of drugs,” he wrote on his blog. “Radical prohibition strategies have never worked.”

“Legalization does not mean that drugs are good,” Fox added, “but we have to see it as a strategy to weaken and break the economic system that allows cartels to make huge profits, which in turn increases their power and capacity to corrupt.”

Naturally, Fox only said all that when he was no longer president, because otherwise the United States would have punished Mexico severely for stepping out of line. In the same spirit, former presidents Fernando Henrique Cardoso of Brazil, Cesar Gaviria of Colombia and Ernesto Zedillo of Mexico made a joint public statement in 2009 that drug prohibition had failed – after they had all left office.

But gradually Latin American leaders are losing their fear of Washington. Last year Mexican President Felipe Calderon called for a debate on the legalization of the drug trade, although he carefully stressed that

Our humanity should extend beyond the Christmas season

T

he Christmas season – now upon us, ready or not – brings out our better natures. Maybe it’s years of childhood practice: behaving well lest we end up on Santa’s naughty list. Or maybe once a year we take to heart the message of community and goodwill towards men.

Whatever the case, we certainly find it easier to be generous and considerate when it comes to our fellow man (which, of course, includes women, children and small furry animals, in some cases). Once a year, we take the time to think about others, at least for as long as it takes to share a smile, a greeting and perhaps even a bit of charity.

The rest of the year? Well, not so much.

That dichotomy begs a host of questions, not least of which is what exactly is it that we owe each other as humans, citizens and residents?

It’s a question that goes back millennia, and forms the basis of social contract philosophy, from the ancient Greeks through Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau. Hmmm, I sense a yawn coming on, kind of like when I go on about pension reform.

At any rate, the topic flows naturally from a discussion of the impact of the Occupy movement – another recent hobby horse – and the current police crackdowns.

Criticized for a lack of defined goals, the movement’s real purpose is to call attention to inequities and to challenge the rest of us to think about a political and economic system that in essence encourages us to be selfish and not to take into consideration what we can do for each other as a community – to forego our humanity.

From the Editor Steve Kannon The protestors give lie to the notion that our system of government – our democracy – is based on the consent of the governed. Government policies that run contrary to the public interest – an increasing proportion of its actions – surely are the opposite of what we’d consent to. They benefit the one per cent at the expense of the 99, as the memorable slogan reminds us.

Who is responsible for that? Certainly those who’ve benefited have fostered an unending propaganda campaign that’s been every bit as effective in sweeping aside citizenship as the corporate marketing has been in turning us into consumers.

We’ve happily abdicated power and responsibility for the comforts of our lives. Excuses about being busy are just that. Still, we’ve opted for the distractions, and can’t even be bothered to show up at the voting booth for five minutes every four years. As a result, we’ve got the government we deserve, one that acts against our interests and against the common good.

We’ve tuned out, bought into consumerism and the ideal of rugged individualism while enjoying the fruits of what years of communityminded spirit and policies brought us.

It’s a trend that was identified in a collection of essays edited by American sociologists Howard L.

To the Editor, Is it just me or are we allowing our town to look trashy?

Lately as I’ve been out walking I have noticed garbage and articles that should be recycled lying in amongst the weeds and thistles, along the streets and public walking trails. Already the grassy areas along some streets look unkempt because of overgrown grass and weeds. Now we add junk to this unkempt look to make it look really bad.

The political and economic systems we live under are both manmade constructs. We devised them, and they’ve evolved into something that no longer meets the needs of the majority of us. If the social contract means that there’s a greater, common good, then that contract has been violated. We’re going to need more than some Christmas cheer to get back on course.

The international discussion on legalization that Santos wants will

not start tomorrow, or even next year, but common sense on drugs is finally getting the upper hand over ignorance, fear and dogmatism. And cash-strapped governments will eventually realize how much the balance sheet could be improved by taxing legalized drug consumption rather than wasting hundreds of billions in a futile attempt to reduce consumption.

Elmira starting to look a little trashy

Who is leaving this mess? Is it our garbage pick-up drivers who allow trash to roll down the streets and don’t bother to pick up after themselves or do we as homeowners not pack our containers correctly?

Whatever it is, we should all make a better effort to pick up around our block.

Of course if you’re not bothered by it, the snow will cover it shortly and then we won’t see it until spring, when the dandelions will keep it covered.

H

ave you ever dreamed of starting your own business? The Township of Woolwich and the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre have teamed up with the Region of Waterloo Library to launch a four-part business seminar series called Start and Grow Your Own Business to help make that dream a reality.

The series, hosted by the Elmira library, kicks off Tuesday with “Ten Steps to Starting a Business,” from 7-9 p.m. Other seminars include “Writing a Business Plan” on Jan. 17, “Financing Your Business” on Mar. 20, and “Communicating and Marketing” on May 15.

According to the event’s organizers, self-employment is a concept that has gained a lot of traction in recent years, prompting the township and the Small Business Centre to offer this series.

“There seems to be a lot of interest for self-employment as an option,” said Roy Weber, a business consultant with more than 15 years of experience who works at the Waterloo branch of the Small Business Centre.

“I think particularly in this economy, with people losing their jobs to downsizing, people are taking a serious look at self-employment as an option over working for somebody else again.”

“We look at the regulations required to set up a business, putting together a business plan, financing your business, staffing your business, and marketing your business,” explained Weber.

As home to Canada’s Technology Triangle, Waterloo Region has always been recognized as an area of high entrepreneurial spirit, but in the township especially the idea of becoming your own boss has really taken hold, says Woolwich’s economic development and tourism officer.

“In the township we have a very high level of entrepreneurship relative to other municipalities in the region, and that is something we want to encourage and foster,” said Laurel DaviesSnyder.

“I think the rural lifestyle has necessitated innovation and change in order to remain viable. There is also a lot of collaboration, and I think when you get people together and trying to achieve something, you get a great synergy of ideas.”

New farm leader faces challenge of a lifetime

G

et ready, Queen’s Park – you’ll soon be seeing a great deal more of new Ontario Federation of Agriculture president Mark Wales and his trademark Birkenstock sandals, weather be damned.

The colourful and well-spoken Wales, an Elgin County horticulture producer, beat rival Don McCabe of Lambton County by just one vote (129-128) on the second ballot in the race for top spot of Ontario’s largest general farm organization Monday.

Both candidates were federation vice-presidents.

Wales has particular experience in on-farm labour issues, environmental issues and in working on high-profile program development with the province, including Ontario’s risk management program and the agricultural portion of the province’s all-sector “Open For Business” legislation review.

That effort was dedicated to cutting impediments to business development, and reforming legislation that gets in industry’s way. The province entrusted the federation to gather opinions and advice from farmers and agri-business across Ontario.

Wales says such initiatives put farmers in a proactive position, close to the decision-making process in government. “We need to be able to see legislation and legislative ideas before they get written, to save ourselves wasting years solving

campaigning against dairy farmers, trying to convince consumers they’ll save a dime if these farmers no longer operate within a supply managed system. That system exists at the pleasure of the Prime Minister, who currently has his sights set on the wheat board … and who, coincidentally, is pictured on the front page of the association’s website, posing and smiling with its executive. Farmers, beware.

The restaurant association’s shortsightedness and self-interest is to be expected. It’s trying to widen the profit margins of its own members, and it couldn’t care less about farmers or where its members get their products. Think about it – if the supply management system falls and over time milk and cheese are cheaper, will your restaurant bill drop accordingly? I doubt it.

But what gets me is how people

Wales is assuming the presidency at a fascinating, tumultuous time for agriculture, one in which it needs to be understood more than ever by the public.

Farming is making the front pages and lead stories with increasing frequency. For decades, people east of Manitoba seldom heard about the Canadian Wheat Board.

And they knew little of the supply management situation for dairy, poultry and eggs, even though they were heavily influenced by it. Now, these stories are everywhere.

Some of them are perpetuated by self-interest groups such as the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association. Its actively

are flip-flopping on their dedication to farmers and local food.

Either that, or they haven’t thought through the implications of a Canada without supply management.

No one knows for sure, but it’s reasonable to expect a sweeping changes if supply management goes down the drain. Forget about choosing sides – what about choosing food grown in Ontario? That consistently rates high in consumer polls, yet some true dietary staples could indeed be replaced by products from the U.S. or abroad if supply management goes down. This isn’t scaremongering. It’s what most insiders expect to become the reality.

And that’s what farm leader Wales and others face right now: a cultural and agricultural landscape that’s changing before our eyes. Assuming the helm in this environment is the challenge of a lifetime

their possible competition in the region. He gave the example of trying to open a coffee shop in town, and that between Tim Hortons, McDonalds and now Robins Nest, it would be a hard market to crack.

“You definitely have to have a good dose of optimism because nothing is a sure thing.

That’s why you want to do your homework before you open the doors so you’re confident there will be a market for your business.”

In this economy where many would

opt for the steady paycheque available by working for someone else instead of taking the risk of going at it on their own, Weber said that if you have a unique or marketable concept you should give it a shot, because even in a slow-moving economy there is never a bad time for a good idea.

There is not a day that goes by without Busse strapping a saddle to one of the 25 horses at her Sonnenhof Stables to go for a ride.

She is dedicated and exacting in her skills as a dressage rider, which means she develops, through training, a horse’s natural athletic ability and willingness to perform, and increases its potential as a riding horse. At the height of a dressage horse’s development, the animal will respond smoothly to a skilled rider’s minimal directions.

It has been called ballet on a horse and to the spectator it should appear as if the rider sits effortlessly on the horse as it performs intricate movements all on its own.

For more than 52 years Busse has surrounded herself with horses and for the last 20 years she has been training both horses and riders in dressage discipline, teaching the correct aids precisely.

“All my life I have been on the back of a horse,” she noted.

Starting at the age of five in Germany with the help of her father, a riding coach, she entered the sport early on, competing in eventing and jumping. In 1982 Busse immigrated to Canada and started coaching horseback riding as a way of dealing with the

outdoor ridi n g ring.

“He helped build me my name and after him I continued to get good horses,” she said. “He was an amaz-

ing horse and we trained him over the flat not over fences, it is a really good base for all horses that need to be trained, either to walk, trot, or canter. At the stables we take it further and go into the more fancy movements – some people re refer to it as horse dancing.”

To say that Busse has a great talent in working with horses is an understatement.

No matter the age, breed or level of training she can trans transform the ordinary horse into an extraor extraordinary one. Which is why she’ll be in Toronto Sat Saturday to receive an award as the 2011 Ontario Equestrian Federation coach of the year.

“I just wanted to get out of the house and do other things rather than focusing on the children all the time, so I accepted a job as a coach at a hunter jumper stable. I never could stay away from the horses,” she said.

She purchased her farm, located at 300 St. Charles St. W. between Maryhill and Bloomingdale, in 1991 and converted the sheep farm into a riding stable and ex expanded to include 25 stalls, an indoor arena and

Not only is Busse receiving the coach of the year award but she is also the only coach in Canada to have four family members competing in the grand prix at the international level: Busse, her two daughters Sarah Turner and Tina Irwin and her son-in-law Jaimey Irwin.

Daughter Tina is also a member of the 2011 PanAmerican dressage team. She was not only taught to ride by her mother but has become a coach as well, which makes her the third generation horse coach in the Busse family.

Busse’s current horse, named Lindor’s Finest, has produced a few winning shows over the season and is part of Busse’s declaration to become a member of the Canadian Olympic team in 2012 in London, England.

The road to the Olympics

will not be an easy one, even for the coach of the year, as she will be travelling across North America over the next few months competing in shows and earning points.

“I am willing and capable to compete for Canada at the Olympics but I still have to prove that I can really do it,” said Busse. “I have to produce results and only the top three will be able to go to the Games.

The road to the Olympics is not paved with sugar cubes.”

Age is not a factor for equestrian riders. In fact, once a rider has learned the skills they operate on technique, and age can help as it means more experience and better technique.

“At the age of 57, I can outdo a lot of our young riders, and I can do this for many more years to come, I am very fit on the inside and out. It is all a mental thing: you are only as old as you think you are.”

For all her endeavours this year, Busse is the most proud of her student’s accomplishments. She trained four riders who made it to the young and junior rider teams.

You can experiment with flavours too. Fancy sea salt, sliced garlic or even herbs tossed with the kale before baking are options. We’ve even used the chips as a nice crispy garnish. Try it on top of a creamy potato soup, or in a sandwich in place of lettuce.

Preheat oven to 350; Tear kale into ‘chip’ size pieces; Toss with olive oil and salt; kale should be ‘shiny’ looking; Spread evenly on a baking sheet and bake until crisp, about 15 minutes.

“OEF coach of the year is a great accomplishment, I understand that, but for me the bigger accomplishment is having four junior riders reach the highest standards of the sport and two of them reached the finals in Kentucky. For me that is the best accomplishment to have. That I have so many great riders in my home base, that is what I am proud of, their accomplishments.”

Becoming a champion rider is not something everyone can do. A rider needs compassion and feel when it comes to connecting with a horse.

“They need to be able to feel themselves into the horse,” said Busse. “It isn’t about muscling a horse because these animals on average weigh 1,200 pounds; if they don’t want to work for us, they are not going to, so we have to convince them that they do want to work for us. We have to build a partnership with the horse.”

That partnership takes a great deal of effort on the part of both horse and rider.

“It takes a lot to become a champion both physically, mentally and you must have deep pockets. It is not a cheap sport to be a part of. It is, after all, the sport of kings.”

Pair of win has Kings back on track T

he Elmira Sugar Kings put on a dominant display of hockey last weekend with a pair of complete wins against out-of-conference foes.

The Kings scored 17 goals by the time the weekend was over, including a 12-2 dismantling of the Fort Erie Meteors Nov. 19 on the road, and a 5-1 victory at home over the Niagara Falls Canucks in their first meeting since the Sutherland Cup Finals last May. The wins were a welcome reprieve for the Kings, who have struggled ever since they jumped out to a 14-0 start to the year.

In the eight games following that win streak the Kings sported a mediocre 3-5 record, losing to divisionleaders Stratford twice and falling to third in the standings.

That less-than-stellar play led the coach to challenge his players to follow the system his staff had laid out, and to be ready to play every night.

“Our message was that we want to be one of the top teams in the league, but we haven’t beaten the top teams in the league yet,” said head coach Dean DeSilva following the win last Sunday against Niagara.

Their back-to-back wins should go a long way in

righting the ship.

In the match against Niagara Falls, the Kings proved they were the capable of taking down a top opponent with a complete victory against the Canucks; with a record of 15-4-4 the Sutherland Cup finalists are currently second in the Golden Horseshoe Conference.

“I thought we probably played the best game of the year (against Niagara),” said DeSilva.

“We played a full 60-minutes as a team and I thought our best players were our best players. Everybody did their job.”

One of the team’s best players agreed.

“In the last couple of games we haven’t been up to par and worked hard enough or done the little things needed to win hockey games,” said Andrew Smith, who was recently named the Midwestern Conference Player of the Month for October after registering 12 goals and 12 assists in 11 games last month.

“We knew we had to come out strong because Niagara Falls is a good team.”

In the opening period, Elmira put their foot down and never let up. They dominated the period on both the shot clock, outshooting Niagara 21-4, and on the scoreboard, leading 2-0 by the end of the frame.

Hasson received a pass from defenceman Craig Johnson and with a clear path to the net he likely caught Canucks goaltender Cody Vinnai off guard when he unleashed a wicked slap shot into the top corner for a 1-0 lead.

Smith added to that lead with a terrific individual effort in the neutral zone. He picked up the loose puck and used his speed to catch the defence flatfooted, then sent a quick wrist shot into the top corner with just 32 seconds left on the clock – a goal very similar to Hasson’s.

In the second period the Kings put the game out of reach early. On the very first shift of the period, Brett Priestap tallied his 10th goal of the season on what appeared to be a broken play.

He crossed the blue line and his initial wrist shot was blocked but bounced back onto his stick, and with the Niagara keeper out of position he sent a shot into the open net. Hasson and Riley Sonnenburg picked up the assists.

Just 14 seconds later the Kings made it 4-0 when Cash Seraphim slipped home his first goal of the year by

pouncing on a rebound on a shot from Lukas Baleshta.

Smith picked up the other assist.

From there on, the Kings continued to win the battles for loose pucks, and appeared hungrier than Niagara throughout the entire game. At one point the Kings had as many goals as the Canucks did shots, and by the end of the second Elmira held a 42-10 advantage overall.

ondon is calling for the Canadian senior men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball teams as both squads qualified for the 2012 Paralympic games in London at the Parapan American Games held in Guadalajara, Mexico from Nov. 13-19.

The men advanced with a bronze medal finish, while the women – including Elmi-

ra’s Katie Harnock – qualified thanks to a silver medal performance. There were three Paralympic berths up for grabs for both the men and the women at the start of the tournament.

The Canadian women were nearly flawless en route to the gold medal showdown against the Americans, sporting a 4-0 record heading into the finals.

The Canadians fell short in

the championship game, however, losing 69-31 to the topranked U.S. squad and earned a second straight silver medal after losing in the finals four years ago in Brazil. “(The tournament) went reasonably well until the final game,” said Harnock over the phone from the University of Alabama, where she attends school.

“Unfortunately, against the U.S. we definitely didn’t play

our best and they sure did.

We’re usually a relatively close match with them and in that match we weren’t.”

Harnock finished with zero points and two assists in the final game while playing just over 25 minutes. Over the course of the tournament she finished tied for eighth with 15 assists and also collected 38 points.

While some might attribute their loss to the Ameri-

cans to fatigue, Harnock said the team just didn’t perform well enough to take home the gold.

“We were all there for the same time, we were all eating the same food, and we were all staying in the same beds.

Does size matter? The debate is anything but a big bore Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve Galea of the gender difference when I took it at just under 250 yards.

Which brings me to the point. The difference between guys like me and those who prefer larger calibers is essentially a difference in philosophy. I don’t see the need for the animal to be punished at both ends of the gun. They seem to.

I’d rather shoot a firearm I enjoy shooting and can handle well. If you can handle a larger firearm, well, all the power to you. I happen to do much better with lighter calibers.

That means no flinch.

Nothing kills consistent accuracy like flinching and this affliction comes from anticipating the punishment inflicted by the recoil of a gun too big for you.

I liken flinching to telling your spouse that you are going out on a long fishing weekend with the boys. If you’ve done it before and it caused you sudden pain, you’re going to expect it the next time – and you might not be as confident as before.

This can lead to all sorts of performance issues and even a fear of fishing, which never helps, of

course.

When it comes to rifle shooting it’s the same. You just keep thinking of the painful things your spouse said about your lack of fishing success and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

But I digress.

As I said, I prefer smaller calibers because they are fun to shoot.

Because of this I shoot more often at the range and in the off season.

This makes me a better and more confident field shot.

Many will agree with me and

many won’t. All I know is that because I shoot them well and practice a lot, my shots are well-placed. This is crucial in hunting.

You can do this with a big-caliber rifle or a small one – the small one just provides less pain for you in the process In the end this is just one of those never ending debates that hunters have – there’s good points on all sides. The only thing we can agree on is this: any way you look at it, talking about calibers is never a bore.

eer hunters are nothing, if not opinionated. And this is especially true when the discussion turns to favourite rifle calibers, as it does every deer season.

Some hunters prefer guns that are, in my opinion at least, better suited to elephants; others prefer what some would call peashooters.

The former is any caliber bigger than the one you use; the latter is anything smaller.

Currently, I own four firearms for big game – a .44 Rem. Mag., a 30.06, a 12-gauge slug gun and a .243. And I’ve taken deer and other animals with each. Every one of them works fine provided that I do my part.

Some would say the first three are elephant guns – at least compared to the last. Funny thing is, that little rifle happens to be the one I prefer these days.

Why? Well, with the bullets I reload for it, it’s easy to shoot, accurate and it gets the job done without spoiling too much meat.

And I’m not talking about the meat on the animal either. No, I’m speaking of the meat on my shoulder. The recoil on that rifle is next to nothing.

Because of its negligible recoil, a couple of younger fellows at camp tease me about it being a lady’s gun.

To which I say, “tell that to the bear and three deer it has taken in the last three seasons.”

Jacks making their way back up the standings Taking three of four points last weekend puts Wellesley in more comfortable position he Wellesley Applejacks continued their strong play last weekend, collecting three of a possible four points thanks to a 5-2 win in St. George last Saturday night and a 4-3 overtime loss in Burford the following evening.

Those points have allowed the Jacks to climb to fourth in the McConnell Conference standings, only four points behind Hagersville and St. George, both tied for first with 23 points.

“I guess all in all, yeah three out of four (points) isn’t bad,” said head coach Kevin Fitzpatrick, who expressed some disappointment in losing to Burford in overtime after leading 3-2 late into the third period.

Their 5-2 win over St. George was the team’s most complete effort in about three seasons, the coach added, indicating it was their strong yet disciplined play that made the difference.

The game was close for most of the match, as both teams were held off the score sheet throughout the first period. The Dukes opened the scoring at 8:03

Burford knotted the match up at 9:43, but Wellesley would score two unanswered goals just over a minute apart to take a 3-1 lead thanks to powerplay goals from Geoff Par at 14:28 (Metzger) and James Mildon at 15:49 (Malone, McLeod).

Burford tallied one more before the end of the period to make it 3-2, and then scored late at 15:46 of the third period to force overtime.

In that overtime period, the Jacks saw some bad luck and unlucky bounces end their winning streak at three games.

Wellesley managed to put the puck past Burford’s keeper Justin Garner in OT, but the goal was waved off after the referees determined Hinschberger had interfered with the keeper, even though Fitzpatrick said his captain was clearly pushed by the Burford defenceman after the goal was scored.

The game continued, and at the opposite end of the rink the Jacks blocked a Burford point shot which deflected

off the board’s right onto the stick of the Bulldogs’ Kyle Chaney, who tapped in the easy winner at 4:29 of overtime.

Despite the overtime loss, the weekend continued Wellesley’s trend of playing well on the road. They own a 7-3-1 record away from Wellesley Arena, the best road record in the league.

Contrast that to their 2-3-0 record at home – the fewest home wins in the league.

“The biggest thing I

think is when you’re on a bus you’re more focused than when they just come to the arena,” said Fitzpatrick of the team’s record.

“They need to come better prepared than they have been.”

The Jacks will get an opportunity to display that preparation tonight (Saturday) when they play host to firstplace Hagersville at 7:30 p.m. in Wellesley.

Fans should keep an eye out for Jacks captain Rod Hinschberger, who has been one of the

league’s best players since returning from injury last month. In only nine games this season he has seven goals and 20 points – including 12 points in his last four games.

“I made him captain last year and some people questioned that, but I knew he was going to be a good captain,” said Fitzpatrick.

“You can see the leadership he brings off and on the ice. He just brings it every game and never misses a shift.”

In the third the Jacks really poured it on and exploded for four unanswered goals to put the game out of reach.

Mitch Metzger tallied a powerplay marker just 1:05 into the third from Corey Way and Rob Hinschberger.

About four minutes later Wellesley slipped another puck past the Dukes keeper as Matt Soveregn scored the eventual game winner at 5:38 on the powerplay from Sean Malone and Connor McLeod.

Way made it 4-1 at 6:55 from Hinschberger and Metzger and Hinschberger iced the game at 18:11 from Way and Mark Hamilton.

Josh Heer was strong in goal, collecting 31 saves for the win.

The following night the team headed into Burford for a game against the always tough Bulldogs and the Jacks knew they were in for a hard game; Wellesley last travelled to Burford on Sept. 25 and needed overtime to seal a 3-2 win.

Once the team is selected the players will gather in Winnipeg in June to train leading up to the London games from Aug. 29 to Sept. 9, 2012.

If Harnock does make the Paralympic squad, it’ll be her second time representing her country at the games following a disappointing fifth-place finish in 2008 in Beijing.

She has won gold at the World Championships in 2006 and now has a pair of silver medals from the Parapan Games, but is looking to add an Paralympic medal to her total.

“I don’t have a Paralympic medal – it’s the only one I don’t have yet – so I’m really looking forward to making the team and being part of things for the next couple of months.”

Now that the team has qualified for next summer’s Paralympics, Harnock has turned her focus back to playing for her university squad but will have team Canada in the back of her mind; she must still qualify for the London-bound team, which comes up early in the new year.

“I’ll go home and see my family (over the holidays), but tryouts are right after that so I really can’t afford to take much time off. I’ll be doing lifting and working out at home to be ready to try and make the team.”

The national team coach praised Harnock’s poise on the court and said she was an important member of their squad in Guadalajara.

When Kenny met Dolly: country music magic Tribute show at Maryhill’s Commercial Tavern features the hits of Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton Steve Kannon

tribute act covering Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton face one daunting task: recreating the experience of a pair of extremely well-know performers who have sold more than 200 million albums. Actually, make that two tasks: choosing which of the long string of hits to showcase in a two-hour show.

Marty Edwards and Marie Bottrell will have that all figured out prior to hitting the stage at Maryhill’s Commercial Tavern for a Dec. 1 concert, “Kenny and Dolly: Together Again.”

A country musician since the early 1970s, Edwards has been doing Kenny Rogers tributes since 1998. Based in Las Vegas, he’s taken his act around the globe, and has appeared on Oprah, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and CNN. In contrast, Canadian country music legend Marie Bottrell will be making her first appearance as Dolly Parton. With a total of 18 top40 radio hits, Bottrell is an eight-time Juno nominee and a two-time CCMA Female Vocalist of the Year. She was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in September 2010.

iconic figure in country music, but there is little video footage or audio interviews of her. It’s just the opposite with Parton, where movies, TV appearances, music videos and countless interviews have ingrained in the public’s mind her look and

sound.

Singing the songs is one thing, but Parton’s personality is so big that recreating it is the crucial part, said Bottrell in a phone interview from her London, Ont. home.

“There’s hardly anybody who doesn’t know who Ken-

ny Rogers and Dolly Parton are,” she said, acknowledging the expectations.

It’s one thing to get into character with costumes, wigs and makeup, but there’s also the singing, tonality, posture and gestures to take into account.

“The goal is to make it believable,” explained Bottrell, though in the end it’s all about the music and getting it just right. “You want to make it a fun experience. If they’re smiling and singing along and tapping their feet, then we’re doing our jobs.”

In preparation, she’s going through Parton’s catalogue: the show will feature a list of her hits, including 9 to 5, Jolene, Coat of Many Colours and Will Always Love You. Narrowing down the choices has been the hard part.

“I grew up listening to her, and I have the odd Dolly Parton song in my repertoire over the years,” she said.

“My favourite Dolly Parton song of all time is “Here You Come Again.” I remember listening to that as a teen and thinking it was so different from what other country music sounded like. That will be fun to do.”

For his part, Edwards will be drawing on Rogers’ long list of hits, The Gambler, Coward of the County, Lucille, Lady, and She Believes in Me among them. Together, they’ll present Parton’s duets with Rogers such as Islands in the Stream.

Grand Harmony Chorus bringing Christmas to Lions Hall Steve Kannon

lmira’s Lions Hall will be awash in the sounds of the season Dec. 4 during A Yuletide Christmas with the Grand Harmony Chorus.

“It will be a mix of season music and some of the stan-

dards from our repertoire,” said Joyce Ireson, one of six Elmira residents in the chorus of 45.

To boost the festive quotient, the ladies will be presenting the likes of Christmas in Killarney, Silver Bells, Feliz Navidad, Christ-

mas is a Feeling and Jingle Bell Rock, among others.

Grand Harmony will be joined by guests the Bluevale Jazz Choir and the Waterloo County Carollers.

“It’s going to be great fun,” said Ireson, who’s been singing in the barber-

shop style for 37 years and has been with the Grand Harmony Chorus since its inception.

The concert is set for Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. at Lions Hall.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for children 5 to 16 and free for those under the age of 5.

WCS, Park Manor benefit from share of real estate sales Elmira agent Paul Martin’s four-year tally of contributions exceeds $70,000 James Jackson

F

or the fourth consecutive year, Re/Max agent Paul Martin has donated $500 from every home sale in Woolwich Township to a charity or local community group, and this year’s recipients are Park Manor Senior Public School and the family violence prevention program offered by Woolwich Community Services.

Martin is donating $8,500 to each group, a reflection of the 34 homes he has sold thus far in 2011, and will give more should he close any more deals between now and the end of December.

“It’s my way of giving back to the community for allowing me to help people sell their house or find them a house,” said Martin of the donations.

“You can’t take it with you,” he added with a chuckle.

The large influx of cash, however, is no laughing matter and both groups said they will make wise use of the funds.

“Like many of our programs the family violence prevention program tends to run with a little bit of a deficit and we don’t get funding from the ministry for preventative work,” said Kelly Christie, director of community support at WCS. She also noted that the donation coincides well with the fact that November is recognized as family violence prevention month.

“This money in particular will go to support the women’s groups that we support.”

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the program, and every year it helps about 100 women who are struggling with violence in their lives. It includes a fourstage women’s group that meets

on a weekly basis to discuss what control and violence look like, and it takes about a year and a half for women to complete the course.

At the end of the program the women participate in an intensive weekend retreat that is the equivalent of about six months of counselling, Christie added, and the money is crucial to help keep that program running.

At Park Manor school, the principal said that he doesn’t have any firm ideas of what he plans to do with the money, and that he must discuss it with his staff and school council.

“If you think of our school goal of creating or developing global critical thinkers collaborating to change the world among our students, what things can we purchase to help make that happen?” remarked James Bond.

“Whether it’s more technology, or classroom resources, we have to decide.”

Bond also knows that the money not only helps the school, but it will indirectly help the entire region by producing better educated and more community-minded students.

“There are so many things that our school community does to support the Elmira community, and this will help support the school and allow us to do more of those things.

“It’s a great way for him to give back to the community, and a great way for us to give back as well.”

This most recent donation by Martin takes his four-year total past the $70,000 mark. He donated $10,000 to the Dan Snyder Memorial Arena in 2008, $8,500 to both John Mahood and Riverside public schools in 2009, $27,000 to KidsAbility in 2010, and another $17,000 this year for a grand total of $71,000.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY Re/Max agent Paul Martin has donated $8,500 to both Park Manor school and the Family Violence Prevention Program in Elmira, a sum of money greatly appreciated by Kelly Christie of WCS (above) and Park Manor principal James Bond (below). Martin donated $500 from every home sale in Woolwich Township in 2011 to the cause.
