E-waste collection helps fund home build in Mexico

> Nightingale Cres. gets a public airing Plans for the reconstruction of Nightingale Crescent in Elmira will be rolled out at a public meeting Dec. 1 at Park Manor Public School. They won’t include the installation of a new sidewalk on the east side of the road, an idea shot down earlier this month by Woolwich councillors in response to protests from residents.

The project will, however, including new pavement, curbs and gutters and the widening of the existing sidewalk on the west side of the road, as well us a new watermain and repairs to existing sanitary and storm sewers.

The scope of the work, timing and impacts on residents will be open to discussion between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. The work is scheduled to begin next May, subject to budget approvals from council.

lectronic waste, more commonly referred to as e-waste, is one of the fastest growing forms of trash in North America, and according to Environment Canada more than 140,000 tonnes of end-of-life electronics are sent to landfills in Canada each year.

Calvary United Church in St. Jacobs has decided to tackle the growing problem of e-waste in their community, while at the same time fund a goodwill mission to Mexico to build a new home for one needy family.

The church has teamed up with Greentec, a Cambridgebased e-waste company, to collect old computers, pagers, cell phones, televisions and the like to be either reused or stripped down for their valuable metals and other components.

The church has been collecting the waste for the past two weeks, and today (Saturday) is the public’s last opportunity to drop off for free that old monitor or printer collecting dust in

the basement.

“So many people are saying ‘I’ve been wanting to get rid of this forever’ and some people are used to taking it to the dump and having to pay to drop it off, so it’s really refreshing for them to know it goes towards building something,” said Chris McCracken, the director of youth and children’s ministries at Calvary United.

If they manage to fill the entire container, McCracken said they could collect about $1,000 for their trip. In total they will need to raise about $5,000 for the materials and another $1,200 for each of the 14 youth and five adult leaders heading on the trip

during March break.

For the past six years the Calvary United has been sending teams to Ensenada, Mexico in partnership with Yugo Ministries to build homes. Each year the church alternates between sending a youth team and an adult team, and the most recent adult team just returned last Saturday.

McCracken said the mission is a tremendous way for the church to spread goodwill to those who really need it. Many families are forced to live in makeshift huts made of tarps, and when the rainy season comes it can lead to problems with mold, and the

“There are a lot of tears,” he said.

It takes about four days to build the homes, which are made of wooden frames with asphalt roofs, and it is a valuable learning experience for the youth.

“They get some international experience to circumstances that are much different than what we might see here, but one of the key things is the relationships that develop between the family and our kids,” said McCracken.

Today is the final day to drop off e-waste in their parking lot, 48 Hawkesville Rd. in St. Jacobs, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There are other fundraisers planned for the future, such as a poinsettia sale in December and a café night in February.

> MSCU funds new peace centre A $1-million donation from Mennonite Savings and Credit Union (MSCU) will fund the creation of Mennonite Savings and Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement at Conrad Grebel University College in Waterloo.

The goal is to create an accelerator centre committed to collaborative peace innovation with lasting impact, an interdisciplinary collaboration that fosters new ways to advance peace in a conflict-filled world, says the school.

In addition to teaching and research facilities, the centre will provide shared seminar and project space for students and faculty, as well as space for community service organizations, pastors, and other peace builders. The centre will add an entire fourth floor to the current building plans, with construction slated to start in March 2012.

Police looking for information about suspicious man firefighters responded to a vehicle fire on a farm off of Maryhill Road. An old pickup truck was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived, and the fire was allowed to burn out. The fire was not deemed suspicious.

n Elmira woman contacted police Wednesday afternoon after being approached by a suspicious person outside the Shoppers Drug Mart. The man asked the complainant if she was single or married before she was able to enter her vehicle.

The man claimed to be from London and is described as white, in his 30s, 5’6” with dark hair and a thick accent. He was driving a grey or tan four-door car with the driver side headlight attached with duct tape.

Police advise the public that what the man is doing is not illegal but would appreciate any help in identifying him.

A petition is asking that the tower be built south of Bamberg along Moser Young Road as opposed to the current preferred location at Hessen Strasse and Moser Young. Meeting Tuesday night, councillors opted to hold further discussions with the 17 residents before deciding on a “statement of concurrence” for Rogers.

The proposed 45-metre tall communications tower slated to be built on a hill north of Bamberg has been a topic of concern for months.

Members of the public had until Nov. 15 to make comments and respond to the site proposed by Rogers. The township received the new petition Nov. 14.

Township chief administrative officer Susan Duke told councillors Rogers seems unwilling to look at alternatives given the cost and time it would take to do so. That said,

“An inclusive play playground in Elmira will ensure all kids in the community are able to utilize the playground, regardless of age or ability,” said Tiffany Harris, founder and CEO of Shane’s Inspiration. “When we read Kelly’s essay we were very touched and fell in love with this community. We were so impressed by the support this community had already rallied in such a short amount of time and Elmira fit into our commitment to finding communities that were committed to inclusion for all of their children and we are glad to support this playground.”

On Thursday Shane’s Inspiration held an information session where landscape architect Virginia Hatley listened to ideas from members of the community to incorporate into the playground.

“We are asking the community what they would like to see in the play environment so the park will serve all children of all abilities.

This is for everyone to enjoy,” said Harris.

Last weekend’s fun fair where children from across the region could come and play games, enjoy a turn in one of two bouncing castles, have their face painted and enjoy some treats and cakes raised over $6,000 towards the playground to be built on a site adjacent to Lions Hall.

New lunch program for seniors starts Monday in Elmira Colin Dewar

A

new seniors’ program that begins Monday at the Woolwich Memorial Centre in Elmira has a dual purpose of providing a healthy lunch and the chance to make new friends.

The pilot project that begins Nov. 21 is a partnership with Community Care Concepts of Woolwich, Wellesley and Wilmot, the Township of Woolwich and Woolwich Seniors Association. The seniors’ lunch will be offered twice a month and is open to any senior living within the community who could benefit from a wholesome meal and the opportunity for fellowship with others.

“We are trying to provide the opportunity for seniors living across Woolwich Township to come together for a hot nutritious meal and

meet new people and build links in the community,” said Cathy Harrington, executive director of Community Care Concepts. “We already host a variety of lunches throughout the township and have had quite a bit of demand for meals. Many people living independently may feel a bit isolated and want to get out particularly in the colder weather and we are providing the opportunity where they can come together and have a good meal and good time.”

The organization, which operates a host of programs including Meals on Wheels, hopes that participants will take advantage of other activities or programs through the senior association or using the facilities at the Woolwich Memorial Centre. Individuals already partici-

pating in programs at the seniors’ centre may want to arrive early or stay after their program for lunch.

“We hope to be able to add programming before and after the lunch that will complement programs that are already offered, as well as a variety of services offered across the township and build a broad continuum of a service,” said Harrington.

“Our goal as an organization is to help seniors live independently in their own home and we are trying to figure out some of the ways that we can do that.”

Currently the Community Care Concepts offers community dining in across the three townships and once a month there is a dinner operating in St. Jacobs at Calvary United Church.

“We get quite a good

turnout to these events and we find that people really appreciate the opportunity to come together around a meal and we have had a lot of requests to expand that,” said Harrington, adding the organization is trying to figure out how to take the community dining program and expand it to other locations that could use it.

The lunch will be held in the large community room on the left side of the main entrance of the WMC at members of the Community Care Concepts will be gathering information on additional programs that individuals would like to see offered.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. with lunch being served at noon.

The group sold about 80 angels in their first year, and Quinn said they’re looking to increase that number in this their second time around.

Last year the angels also had the name of the individual being recognized written on them, but Quinn said they decided to make the angels blank this year in an effort to make it more convenient for customers to just come in and leave

with an angel that same day.

For every angel sold, a paper cutout with the name of the person written on it will be hung on the Christmas tree in the front foyer of the Woolwich Memorial Centre.

“We hope that this year being the second time, people will really take to it and it will help support the centre,” added Quinn.

Angels are available for purchase at WCS Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 73 Arthur St. South, and at

the WMC customer service desk located at 24 Snyder Ave. South from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The WCS is also gearing up for its annual Christmas goodwill hamper program. Every year WCS distributes about 150 baskets full of holiday food and presents to the less fortunate in the area.

Donations for that program are due on Dec. 9.

Shopping debate ain’t what it used to be

M

ore than a decade ago, the prospect of a Walmart store in the township set off a storm of protest, as is often the case with anything involving the world’s largest retailer. It was years before the St. Jacobs power centre was built.

While that project was still being discussed, the early part of the last decade saw a flurry of activity in Elmira’s grocery business. As with the Walmart, there was a great deal of concern about the impact on the downtown core as the township looked at development in the south end of town.

Years later, that’s still being played out. Only this time the reaction is much more muted. A public meeting earlier this month to discuss and expansion at the Foodland site drew hardly any attention – we’ve either embraced the new form of retail or resigned ourselves

to it. While the South Field business park hasn’t seen rapid development – we’re still waiting on a Canadian Tire store, restaurant and host of other tenants discussed – it does seem inevitable that it will come.

There is concern, of course, about the potential impact on the downtown core. There will be one, just as the growth of shopping malls and, later, big box developments undoubtedly had an impact on cities everywhere – you need look no further than our neighbours Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo.

The reality, however, is that we want something different in our shopping habits. Malls, with dozens or hundreds of stores under one roof and plenty of parking, offer decided advantages, not the least of which is shelter from the weather.

And, in recent years, the superstore phenomenon has caught fire. You

can bet that plenty of people from Elmira, not to mention the rest of Woolwich and Wellesley townships, do their shopping at those facilities in the aforementioned cities.

Space considerations alone preclude those kinds of shopping experiences from being offered in downtown cores – in Elmira’s case, it’s easy to look around and see that big-box retail, for instance, would find no home there. Yet most of us are voting with our dollars to shop at those other spots.

By bringing some of that flavour to Elmira’s south end there is an opportunity to keep some of that trade in this community, as representatives of Sobeys Inc. reiterated at the recent public meeting. That doesn’t alleviate the pressures seen on the downtowns of just about every community, but ideally the cores evolve to provide the kind of

offerings that draw people there, from specialty retail to restaurants and entertainment – precisely the kind of outcome, as yet unfulfilled, that has prompted Kitchener to spend more than $100 million in its core.

Woolwich has nothing like that kind of money to spend downtown; it will be up to the private sector to make the investment. A core review conducted half a decade ago identified the goal: attractive, pedestrianfriendly streetscapes, including trees, green spaces, flowers, benches and trails and amenities such as restaurants are what residents want from their downtowns.

The township will surely mull over all those considerations in weighing the expansion bid for Sobeys. Rumours of a Metro store for the former IGA location may help ease concerns about the core.

Fear of contagion pushes Arab League down new road F

or most of its 66-year history, the Arab League was a powerless organization, dominated by autocratic regimes that made sure it never criticized their lies and crimes. But suddenly, this year, it woke up and changed sides.

Last March the Arab League suspended Libya’s membership because of dictator Moammar Gadhafi’s brutal attempts to suppress the revolution, and voted to back a no-fly zone in Libya. That led directly to the UN resolution authorizing the use of force to protect civilians from Gadhafi’s army, and ultimately to the tyrant’s overthrow and death.

Last Saturday the Arab League acted again, suspending Syria’s membership. It did so because President Bashar al-Assad has not carried out the commitments he gave the League about ending the violence against Syrian civilians (an estimated 3,500 killed so far), pulling the army off the streets of Syrian cities, releasing the thousands of recently imprisoned protesters, and opening a dialogue with the opposition within two weeks.

On Sunday the Arab League’s secretary-general, Nabil al-Arabi, called for “international protection” for Syrian civilians as the organization lacked the means to act alone. “There is nothing wrong with going to the UN Security Council because it is the only organization able to impose” such measures, he added. And he said that during a visit to Tripoli, the newly liberated capital of Libya.

Everybody understood the significance of his saying it there. The Arab League explicitly rejects foreign military intervention in Syria, and NATO would never take on Assad’s regime anyway. But al-Arabi was implicitly

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER saying that what is happening in Syria now is comparable to what was happening in Libya six months ago, and that all measures short of war are justified to stop the slaughter in Syria and remove the dictator’s regime.

Then on Monday, King Abdullah of Jordan finally said aloud what almost every other Arab leader has been thinking: “If Bashar [al-Assad] has the interest of his country [at heart] he would step down.”

It’s particularly striking coming from Abdullah because the two men are not just neighbours. They both came to power in 1999-2000, replacing fathers who had ruled over their respective countries for decades, and they were both originally painted as reformers. True, Bashar al-Assad is not technically a king, but he is equally the product of a dynasty – and here is his closest counterpart in the Arab world publicly giving up on him.

King Abdullah added that on his way out, Bashar should also “create an ability to reach out and start a new phase of Syrian political life.” Decoded, that means that Syria’s problems cannot be ending just by changing horses. The whole Baathist regime, and the near monopoly of power by the Alawite minority that underpins it, have to go too.

This is astonishing stuff. One year ago, nobody would have believed it possible that 18 of the 22 members of the Arab League would vote, in effect, for the peaceful removal of the oppressive

Syrian regime, or that the Jordanian king would dare to be so frank about his neighbour’s problems and options.

What has wrought this miracle?

It would be nice to say that the rapid and largely non-violent spread of democracy in the Arab world has brought enlightenment even to the most deeply entrenched authoritarian regimes, but it would not be true. Only three of the 22 Arab League members (Tunisia, Egypt and Libya) have actually had democratic revolutions, and their example has not transformed the attitudes of all the other members.

What drives this response is mostly fear.

The Arab League said nothing when Bashar al-Assad’s father slaughtered up to 40,000 Syrians while putting down a revolt in the city of Hama in 1982, but his son’s brutality is simply unacceptable today. Arab leaders can no longer ignore the mass killing of Arab citizens. Some of them would like to, but uncensored Arabiclanguage mass media, broadcasting directly from satellites, have made it impossible. Everybody knows what’s going on.

Moreover, none of the other big countries of the Arab east – Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Lebanon – are very far from Syria. The longer the struggle there goes on, the likelier it is to topple over into sectarian war and ethnic cleansing. The neighbours are rightly terrified that the sectarian violence might then spill over into their own countries as well, so the sooner Bashar al-Assad leaves office, the better.

Creators of economic turmoil are perfectly aware

T

he financial collapse and recession that began in 2008 was immediately compared to the Great Depression. The austerity measures now being imposed on populations around the globe can be compared to the years that followed the collapse of 1929.

In the stirrings of unrest today we find parallels from the Dirty Thirties, particularly in what punishing austerity wrought in Germany. The rise of Adolf Hitler and the National Socialists began when a centrist chancellor, Heinrich Brüning, began to impose drastic austerity measures in 1930, a reaction to the economic crisis and the country’s stifling debt and reparations from the First World War. In part as an effort to block the Nazis, he governed with emergency powers, imposed austerity plans over the wishes of the opposition and used the police to quell dissent. As the situation worsened, the country turned increasingly to the right.

Sound familiar?

In Greece and Italy, the leaders have stepped down, replaced by technocrats with ties to the very financial institutions that created the debt crisis overtaking the Eurozone today. Authorities are using the police to crack down on the Occupy movement, including those protesting in Toronto and Vancouver. Still, there’s a growing unrest around the globe as the inequities of the recession and the response to it continue to widen the gap between the haves and the have nots.

As economist Paul Krugman points out this week, it’s the 99 per cent that is paying the price for the often-criminal actions of the one per cent. He notes that the austerity that followed in the wake of the Second World War was taken stoically by the public, as it knew goods

“Today, by contrast, austerity is being imposed because men in suits say that it’s necessary to satisfy the invisible gods of the financial market,” he writes in his NY Times blog. “It’s understandable that the public is beginning to have its doubts, and not just because those invisible gods somehow demand sacrifices only from workers, never from the wealthy. For the fact is that those men in suits have no idea what they’re doing – a fact that was apparent to some of us early on, but it now becoming common knowledge.”

Krugman is probably being too kind: the men in suits likely know exactly what they’re doing: arranging a system that continues to pay off for the wealthy at everyone else’s expense. That’s why those who caused the financial crisis due to dodgy activities with derivatives and credit default swaps not only avoided jail time, but were rewarded with bonuses, promotions and government jobs/contracts. There was a fine example of that in the last week in the UK, where austerity measures have already taken a toll on the public: the Royal Bank of Scotland, owned by taxpayers since it was taken over to avoid collapse in 2008, plans to hand out $800 million in bonuses to investment bankers despite losing $1.8 billion last year, causing a political back-

lash that saw Prime Minister David Cameron forced to intervene.

Cameron’s right-leaning government has been ahead of the curve with austerity measures. The shift in tack has been taken by governments elsewhere. The connection between worsening economic circumstances and rise of right wing governments was established in a paper by two economists who contribute to the London-based Centre for Economic Policy Research.

Markus Brückner, an economics professor at the University of Adelaide, and Hans Peter Grüner, chair for economic policy, Department of Economics, University of Mannheim.

“The global crisis has hit OECD nations hard – the hardest since the crises of the 1930s. As the Great Depression was associated with a rise in political extremism, the world may be facing similar political developments today,” they write in a recent study.

“Benjamin Friedman has argued that GDP per capita growth is a key factor for the development of a political system. His analysis, based on various historical case studies,

points out that only a continuous improvement of individual living standards provides the ground for the development of what he calls a more ‘open’ society. Accordingly, it is not so much the level of GDP that determines the way in which a democracy develops but the growth rate.”

So, as the economy stutters, we lean right, bringing scapegoat politics and austerity measures that have failed miserably over and over again. In the worst cases, the worst kind of economic collapses brings out the worst in societies.

The economy is slowing down again – more confirmation of that this week from an Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) study – yet the prescription is more austerity measures. However, such contractionary policies will only worsen the recession, as they have done time and time again.

Those who created the mess continue to prosper, however. They know what they’re doing. The rest of us learn nothing from history.

And the beatings will continue until morale improves

Dyer: A shift in the Arab League > CONTINUED FROM PG. 09 that roared. It is one of the smallest Arab states, but its ruler, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has been both brave and far-sighted. It was he who gave al-Jazeera television, the first and best of the new satellite-based news operations, a terrestrial home, and even substantial subsidies.

It was Qatar that took the lead in persuading the Arab League to suspend Gadhafi’s regime last

March, and then actually sent planes and military advisers to assist the pro-democracy revolt in Libya. And it is Qatar again, in the form of Prime Minister Hamid bin Jassim Al Thani, chair of the League’s committee for dealing with Syrian problems, that pushed the League into suspending Syria last week.

Whether that will actually produce the desired result in Syria remains to be seen. But at least they are trying.

ot too long ago, the independent retailer seemed endangered. Unable to compete with the purchasing power and supply of national chains, the mom-and-pop shop seemed destined for the dust heap.

In retail, however, everything is cyclical.

Waterloo Regional Electronics (WRE) is a single store in downtown Elmira, located in the lower level of the Elmira Shopping Village, selling electronics, including iPods and digital camera accessories, memory sticks and cards, AV and computer essentials, headphones, batteries and off lease HP computers and laptops.

It’s a family-run business operated by Peter Collins.

“Mostly we are retail electronics and we have most of the accessories people would need to get there stuff working or keep it going or to hook it up differently to make it do other functions,” said Collins. “Generally someone will walk in with a camera or recorder and they have lost or don’t have the cable to hook it up to the computer, and I will have what they need.”

For every convenience electronic devices bring us, there is an equal and opposite frustration when they slow down or lose capacity – Collins offers service and upgrades to computers. He’s capable of adding memory,

installing new DVD drives, and increasing the speed of older computers by cleaning up programs and removing some viruses.

“I am not a technician; if someone comes in with a computer after they spilled a beverage into it I will refer them elsewhere – that is not what I do” said Collins.

Collins has 35 years experience in electronic retail: he began working for Radio Shack in 1976 and stayed with the company until a year and half ago.

“It was a major change and since I have been doing it all my life; I decided to reinvent the electronic store,” he said. “The main thing is I have learned to deal with people’s needs in electronics and come up with a variety of solutions even if it is not within my store.”

Collins has taken a different approach when setting up his storefront, creating a customer-friendly and enticing environment as opposed to a dark and overly jammed store, as is sometimes the case in the industry.

“I am use to being in an electronic store where it is congested and not really customer friendly – I wanted to change that with this store,” he said.

The store boasts 1,400 square feet and is very open with a lot of floor room available for Collins to set up his product gondolas, which are on wheels allowing him to float the store to re-mer-

Setting up shop in Elmira was a no-brainer for Collins, who no longer wanted to commute to work outside of town and saw the need for an electronic store in the area.

“I live in Elmira and I have never liked commuting to work, even when I worked at the Conestoga Mall, plus there is no place in Elmira or St. Jacobs or even Waterloo to really get your electronics; I feel there is a demand for a store like this.

There is no local supply of the items I sell.”

With a hardware store next door and a vacuum store around the corner, Collins jokes that the area

is slowly becoming the tech corner of Elmira.

“I had a ham radio operator in recently and they liked having the local access to switches and fuses, not necessarily exciting stuff but important stuff,” he said. “I have had feedback from customers telling me my prices are good and reasonable. I offer very good value and I am less expensive than the big box stores but my first focus is service and good value.”

Collins is looking to build a foundation before he expands to other products, saying even though he has the experience it takes time to grow a business.

Many consumers confused about local food traits

T

o the things we hold dear, we tend to associate traits that in reality may not necessarily be so. Case in point: local food.

Local food is local food, period.

Its distinguishing characteristic is that it’s grown close to where it’s consumed. Varying definitions exist about how close is close. But in the end, if consumers buy it (and pay what it’s worth), local farmers, however they’re defined, benefit.

Now, consider what local food is not.

Nothing makes local food automatically organic, natural, better, worse, cheaper or more expensive than non-local food. But sometimes perceptions trump reality, and a new study shows that seems to be the case when it comes to certain local food traits.

Dr. Ben Campbell, a horticulture economics researcher at the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, says a Canada-wide online survey of almost 900 people his team conducted last fall shows most respondents grasp the basic idea that local food means decreased transportation.

Logically, people understand anything that needs to be shipped an appreciable distance is likely to challenge the environment more than the same commodity produced locally, however it’s defined.

But Campbell and his team found clarity was lacking among respondents on some other local food and

For example, he found 12 per cent of respondents thought local food and organic food are the same thing.

A similar percentage believed local food is grown without synthetic pesticides, and that local food isn’t genetically modified.

And 30 per cent of those who answered the survey thought no pesticides whatsoever – not even “natural” ones, such as garlic, vinegar, cayenne and mustard powder – were used on organic food.

None of these statements is true.

“I expected to see differences in the responses,” he says, “but I didn’t expect such confusion.”

Campbell thinks consumers are confused by the barrage of information and misinformation floating around about local food, organic food, pesticides and other aspects of farming.

And now, he’s wondering what happens to consumer trust when people harbouring those misconceptions discover their beliefs are wrong.

In their revelation, will they somehow blame farmers for this misunderstanding?

And if they do, what kind of backlash can farmers expect?

It’s a tough situation. Typically, farmers who produce food for either local or non-local consumption don’t trumpet the use of crop protection products, whether they be synthetic or natural.

For the most part, there’s no obvious consumer benefit in doing so, even though pesticide companies can spout reason after reason why their products contribute to a safer and more abundant food system.

Farmers, processors and retailers tend to highlight some other more publicly palatable feature. In the case of local food, they’d likely talk about its low food miles feature. Or if it’s destined for export, they’d emphasize its quality. Campaigns urging consumers to buy local seldom focus on production practices; rather, they highlight social mes-

sages, such as local food is good for local farmers and supports the local community.

But Campbell says that effort may lead consumers to believe whatever they’re buying has traits it doesn’t…even though no one is claiming it does.

So what’s the food sector supposed to do? Education is one answer.

Ironically, though, respondents in Campbell’s survey who rated their knowledge high about local food also had the most misconceptions.

Mandatory product labelling doesn’t seem to have helped them, either.

Then, of course, there’s the question of who would pay to try to educate this group. It’s sizable, but still a minority.

However, it’s likely a vocal minority. And if Campbell’s right, it will roar when it discovers it’s been wrong.

I

RACE READY Breslau-native Herb Becker has made a name for himself on the vintage motorcycle racing circuit as one of the best mechanics around, prompting him to be inducted into the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame on Nov. 5.

f you walk up to the front door of Herb Becker’s Kitchener home and ring the doorbell, chances are no one will answer. If Becker is home, you’re more likely to find him in the garage behind his house.

With its white paint peeling slightly around the edges of the large rollup door, the garage’s humble exterior belies a bevy of activity inside.

From the 1960s-era dragster sitting in one corner, to the shell of a 1928 Model A Ford Coupe in the other, along with the myriad parts, tools, and tires piled nearby, it’s clear that Becker knows a thing or two about fixing up old cars.

There are also two vintage Norton motorcycles on the floor of the shop, one propped up near the door and another on a stand awaiting work.

He’s fixing the bikes up for a guy from Rockford, Illinois, he says, and hanging on the wall behind him are two more Norton motorcycles of his own.

For the past 25 years Becker has made a name for himself in vintage motorcycle racing circles as one of the preeminent bike builders in the country, and on Nov. 5 the Breslau-native was inducted into the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame in the builder category during its sixth annual induction banquet held in Mississauga.

The honour, however, is one that Becker would rather do without.

“I’ve got to admit, it didn’t make me feel particularly good,” said Becker, leaning against his worktable and his arms crossed over his chest.

“I’m really kind of struggling to deal with it. I find my new-found celebrity feels rather awkward.”

The humble man has equally unassuming roots. Born in 1946 and raised just outside of Breslau near the airport, Becker grew up idolizing the city kids who seemed to have more excitement in their lives than he did growing up in the small town.

Breslau was far from the booming town it is now, and he said there was scarcely a thing to do.

“Your movement was restricted (living in Breslau),” he said. “You got to meet kids from the city, and you think everything is happening in the city.”

It was during the 1950s and early 60s that Becker said he developed his love for cars.

Back in those days the 401 and other major highways in the area were non-existent, so when racers and fans made the drive from Hamilton and Cambridge to the Bridgeport Speedway, they would often go right by the Becker homestead.

“Bridgeport Speedway on a Saturday night was a pretty

big deal,” he said. “So every Saturday night this was a big event for me to sit and watch the cars.

“I really think that’s what piqued my interest in racing.”

His father didn’t share that interest in cars or racing, so Becker was not allowed to go to the races until he was 16 and could drive himself.

The family moved to Kitchener that same year and Becker started to apprentice as a tool and die maker in town, an occupation that leant itself well to his passion for working with his hands and building or repairing engines.

“My hands really are my way of expressing myself; I think I’m hardwired from the brain to my hands, and it’s intimate and a meaningful expression for me.

“When I started as a tool and die maker I didn’t even know what it was, but I’m lucky because it’s exactly the right job for me.”

Becker was married in 1971 and they had a son in 1972.

His wife at the time wanted him to give up fixing cars and they moved to a larger house – with no garage – a few years later.

That move was what prompted Becker to make the switch from cars to motorcycles.

His brand of choice was Norton, a British motorcycle company, originally from Birmingham, founded in 1898. He said he chose Norton because the parts were cheap and at the time he could build one from scratch for about $500.

In the past 25 years heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s made about 10 or 12 bikes and had three different drivers compete for him at tracks all across Canada and North America, from Daytona to

Shannonville, Ontario.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s earned widespread praise for his technical skill, and fans and opponents alike have come to recognize Beckerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trademark baby-blue motorcycles as they make their way around the track, dominating the circuit for a quarter century.

That was one of the primary reasons why he was inducted into the hall of fame this year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t too many in the vintage motorcycle races that wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know Herbâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name,â&#x20AC;? said Vada Seeds, the chair of the selection committee at the Canadian motorcycle hall of fame and a member of its board of directors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;His bikes and his engines are

known throughout Ontario and the United States.â&#x20AC;?

While renowned for his technical skill, Becker never raced a motorcycle a day in his life, and for good reason: Becker said that winning a race comes down to the best racers riding the best bikes, and the better the team, the better your chance of winning.

The best mechanics in the business want to ride their own bikes, and that is their downfall, he said, because most of them are only mediocre riders. Likewise, the best riders are often only average mechanics.

Homemade stock well worth the extra effort

ne of our most popularâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and importantâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;classes that we teach at The Culinary Studio is the basics on homemade stock and sauces. More and more folks are trying to watch their sodium intake, as well as the use of processed foods. Although cooking from scratch can take up more time, it is well worth the effort for stock that is made with local meat and produce. Make lots, and freeze it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it is so handy to have for many dishes.

We have three rules when it comes to stock making: donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stir it, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cover it and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t boil it. By abiding by these rules, your stock will remain clear and golden. Cooking it

sauces; Notice that we do not add salt to this broth, as it can be used for various things which we will season at the end.

The sauce veloutĂŠ (pronounce vel-oohh-the), is one of the classic French mother sauces. It is a rouxthickened stock. The roux (equal parts flour and butter) is cooked briefly before adding the hot stock.

Veloute can be used as a sauce over chicken, or as a base for a cream soup.

Place bones in a large pot and cover with cold water; Bring just to a boil, then immediately turn down to a simmer (medium heat); Skim all of the grey-ish foam that rises to the top; Add remaining ingredients and then simmer, uncovered and without stirring for 1-2 hours; Strain into a large bowl or container; Cool down before ladling into freezable containers. Refrigerate overnight â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this will allow any fat to harden at the surface. Freeze if necessary; Use stock to make soups and

aving held the top spot in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey Leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Midwestern Conference thus far in the season, the Kings fell to third last weekend. A

6-2 loss Sunday at the Dan Snyder Memorial Arena to the team nipping at their heels, the Stratford Cullitons, saw to that.

Stratford improved to 19-2-0, two points ahead of second-place Brantford

(17-2-2) and three up on the now third-place Kings (174-1). Elmira lost its firstplace spot when Stratford moved ahead by defeating Cambridge Nov. 11.

The Kings seemed tense when they took to the ice

and were easily dominated by the Cullitons. Less than five minutes into the first period Stratford forward Andrew Barton broke down the ice and easily slipped the rubber past netminder Nick Horrigan,

scoring his first of two for the night.

itch Metzger and Corey Way notched a pair of goals each to lead the Wellesley Applejacks to a 5-4 home win over the Ayr Centennials Nov. 12. The Jacks continued their winning ways the following night on the road against Norfolk Rebels in a 10-7 decision.

The victories improved Wellesley to 8-6, keeping them in fourth place. The Centennials fell to 6-4-2, and Norfolk remains at the bottom of the McConnell Conference with a 1-122 record.

Metzger opened the scoring at 7:51 into the contest against Ayr, with Rob Hinschberger and Way collecting assists, but the Centennials would score three goals within five minutes to take the lead in the period. The Jacks cut that lead by one after Hinschberger found

Making the most of a can’t-miss proposition

I

f there is any single sentence that strikes terror into the heart of the average outdoorsman, it has to be the phrase, “You can’t miss it.” This even eclipses the horrific sound of your spouse saying, “You don’t need another rifle.”

I was reminded of this during last week’s deer hunt when one of the guys at camp provided me with verbal directions to a new tree stand location – one that I was asked to find in the pre-dawn darkness. You might as well have given me directions to Mars.

“Where is it?” I asked meekly.

“Oh, it’s easy to find,” he replied.

“Just walk down the main trail until you hit a boulder – you can’t miss it – then walk up the hill and, as soon as you get to the top you’ll see a funny fern, look to the left and you’ll see the stand.”

And then, as if to make matters worse, he repeated, “You can’t miss

I should have packed an overnight bag and tent then and there. But instead, I stepped out into the darkness sure that I’d find everything but the tree stand.

One “You can’t miss it” is bad enough. But when someone gives you two of these in the same set of directions, the odds are pretty good you’ll end up somewhere within a few kilometres of where Amelia Earhart touched down. Rumour has it she was given three of these assurances.

The sad part is that every outdoorsman knows that “You can’t miss it”

loosely translates into something like “If you are lucky, you’ll stumble onto what I am talking about by the fourth morning.” Yet, despite this, we still listen politely to the directions and head off, knowing full well that we’re sure to be totally lost within the hour.

That particular morning things didn’t go nearly that bad, however.

Missing the trail, the old stump, the fern and the correct hill took only 15 minutes. So, I decided to sit down and wait until daylight before looking for the usual signs telling me I had arrived at a place somewhere far beyond the margin of the map I was carrying.

Even so, as the sun rose, I had real hope. I mean how hard could it be to find a hill and a boulder in the Canadian Shield hill country I was in?

Later that morning, after locating my 186th of each, I decided to pack it in and use my GPS to make my way

back to camp for breakfast.

Unfortunately, the direct route ordained by the satellites took me through several bogs, one hawthorn thicket, around a pond and over six heart-attack-inducing hills. By the time I got back, I was good and ready for breakfast – as well as the dinner they were in process of serving.

“Well, did you find the tree stand?” my friend asked.

“Not quite,” I said. “But I did cut across a few fresh scrapes and the tracks of a big old buck.”

“Where?” he asked.

“Oh, walk down the old logging road until you see a beech tree, then turn north until you hear the creek.

From there veer east through the poplars until you hit a funny looking Ironwood tree. Just past that is a well-used game trail …”

“It sounds kind of hard to find,” he said.

“You can’t miss it …” I smiled.

Undeterred, Stratford would score two more goals in the period.

Elmira answered back with one at 18:24 by Michael Hasson to finish the period 3-2 in Stratford’s favour.

But that was it for the home team’s scoring for the rest of the night.

Stratford, on the other hand, kept rolling along.

Barton needed just 39 seconds into the middle frame to put his team up 4-2, converting a beautiful pass from forward Pat Looby to beat Horrigan with a wrist shot. Stratford’s Ray Huether got his second of

the night at 12:56 to make it 5-2 after 40 minutes.

Hitting the ice for the third period the Kings looked lost as Stratford took control en route to a sixth goal (Looby) and the win.

Horrigan stopped 28 of the 34 shots he faced. His Stratford counterpart stopped 36 of 38.

The Kings didn’t bring their best game and paid a heavy price, a lesson coach Dean DeSilva hopes isn’t lost on a team that lacked discipline, especially from its veteran players.

“They came into the game pretty tight. This was a big game and the guys were almost too up for it and then we got into to some penalty trouble and it just fell apart from there – the wheels fell off. When they don’t want to stick to-

gether as a team they are going to lose,” said DeSilva. “It has been the same story for each one of our losses. They have a choice they can play to the system and as a team, which works because when they do follow it we win. They did it in the beginning of the season when we were 14-0 or they can play as individuals and lose games like the last two.”

DeSilva felt his older, more experienced players were not up to the task.

“I thought our 20 year olds were our worst players and our rookies were our best players. I thought that Devon Wagner, Cash Seraphim and Pat McKelvie were our best line tonight and the guys that should be our best players were by far our worse tonight and it was an embarrassment

to how they played.”

The Kings clocked an overall 50 minutes in the penalty box, allowing Stratford some excellent chances: they were able to cash in on three of those power plays.

“The team took a lot of penalties and they can either decide to embarrass themselves like they did tonight or they can play the way that we know they are capable of and we know the systems will work, it is up to them they are the ones that have to go out and play we can’t put on the skates and play for them,” said DeSilva.

For Phil Westman, head coach of the Cullitons, this was a big win for his team.

“Our strategy coming into the game did not really change, we played as we always do but there is

more excitement coming into Elmira because they have a good team and we knew this one would be a little more intense,” he said. “I thought this was going to be a tight game.

We did get a few calls in our favour and when that happens you have to capitalize. They had a few good players take ten minute penalties and that takes their steam away and I am sure that Dean will address that to his players.

Elmira is still a top team and should not be counted out.”

The Kings will be on the road for their next game as they face off against the Fort Erie Meteors on Saturday and will return home on Sunday in a rematch of the Sutherland Cup finals against the Niagara Falls Canucks.

This will be the third time the tournament has been held in Elmira after moving from RIM Park in Waterloo.

The tournament includes 20 teams, each playing in a one-game showdown against another team for bragging rights.

There is no championship game, no trophy to be won,

just a chance to get together and play some hockey for a great cause.

Last year the tournament raised $25,000 to build a youth room at the new Anselma House in Kitchener, which was completed earlier this year.

The group hopes to draw more interest in the Elmira area, as there are no teams registered from town, and they have decided to give back to this community to show their ongoing commitment to Elmira.

During their annual golf tournament this summer they raised about $15,000

with some of it going to the football program at Elmira District Secondary School, and the rest will be used to create a scholarship program for three students at EDSS every year to pursue post-secondary education.

“What we’re trying to say to the community of Elmira that we’re supporting the community, and we’d like to get more people from Elmira interested in the tournament,” said Dietrich.

Organizers are also trying to incorporate the Sugar Kings, but that proved difficult due to conflicting schedules.

“We have some long-term goals to get them on board with this. With the Kings being a community team and this being a community event, it’s a win-win for our tournament and the Kings,” said Brad Nickel, another organizer for the tournament and an assistant coach with the Kings.

“This year the tournament is on the 26th and we have a game that night (in Waterloo), but moving forward hopefully we can work something out.”

The Optimist club is still looking for anyone interested in submitting a team

or for corporate sponsors for the event. There are four levels of sponsorship; platinum (over $1,000); gold ($500 to $999); silver ($250 to $499); and bronze ($100 to $249).

Platinum and gold sponsors will have their company logos placed on the shirts that are given to all the participants in this year’s tournament as well as on the event banner hung throughout the day. Teams are required to collect pledges before the day of the tournament.

he Woolwich Gymnastics Club is set to celebrate 25 years in the community today (Saturday) with an open house and demonstration from 2-4 p.m. at their facility located at 97 Earl Martin Dr. in Elmira.

It will be an opportunity to thank the town for all its support and to encourage new gymnasts to join them for the upcoming season, said the

club’s president.

“I am really proud of where we are,” said Nancy Halstead, who started out as a gymnast with the club when it first opened in 1987.

“I think it’s pretty awesome that I’ve been able to be with the club this long and watch its growth and see what it’s become, from the small club we started with to what we are today.”

When it began in ’87, the organization was named the

Woolwich Cardinals Gymnastics Club – though the doors they opened weren’t actually their own, as they had to operate out of the gym at Park Manor Public School.

The club earned its name after the “Birdland” area of the town the school was located in.

At the time the club only had a few staff members and students from the school who wanted to pass their love for gymnastics on to the area’s

children. The club was incorporated in the mid-1990s and continues to operate as a nonprofit today.

Three years after their formation, the club realized they had outgrown their space at Park Manor, and made the move to the small gymnasium of Elmira District Secondary School, where they ran programs four nights a week for children six years and up. In 2005, when membership grew to 250, the club

The girls fly out late Christmas Day to prepare for an exhibition game on Dec. 27 before the tournament gets under way on the 28th. They’re set to face three Finnish teams, a Swedish squad, and one other NRL team, the Richmond Hill Lightening.

The coach said the team should be ready, but admitted that there are a few challenges – in particular a couple of differences in rules between the two games. For example,

in Finland the teams play 60-minute games, while in Canada they only play 40-minute games.

As a compromise the tournament will be played out using 48-minute games divided into four quarters, which the coach said it could prove challenging for the players, particularly in the dying minutes of a game.

“It means a lot, those last eight minutes,” he said.

As for the Nosal sisters, they couldn’t think of a better Christmas gift than to travel to Finland and compete in the sport they’ve played for 13 years against

some of the best players in the world, but they also admit to having some nerves.

“I’ve heard they’re really fast,” said Sam. “Our team is fast too and in order to play elite ringette you have to be fast.

It’s a completely new level of ringette, but at the same time I’m excited and ready to get out there.”

As for Paige, who is the youngest girl on the team, she said that the unfamiliarity that comes with facing teams they’ve never played before will be the biggest challenge for her.

“We’ve grown up playing against the same people all

our lives, and we’re jumping up now to another level.

That always creates a little anxiety, but it’s exciting at the same time.”

As affiliated players, the girls are eligible to play in up to seven regular season games with the Turbos, but not the playoffs. Paige, who has shuffled between forward and defence, has played for the team twice this season and collected one assist while Sam, who plays forward, has played three games and scored three goals and six assists.

They also practice for an hour every week with the team, on top of the four

or more hours of ice time they get with their St. Clements teammates. They also have some experience playing at a high level of ringette, both representing the Team Ontario U19 squad at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax last year after capturing the provincial title in March.

The girls also believe playing on the same team can give them an edge over their competition.

“I think you feed off it and you’re more familiar with them, so I think it’ll work to our advantage,” said Sam.

It would be Wellesley captain Hinschberger that ensured his team’s advantage after the second intermission. When Centennials’ forward Andrew Tapsell was sent to the box for a roughing call, the towering center pinched in from the blueline with five minutes remaining, rifling home the eventual game-winner. On the road the following day the Jacks dominated the Rebels, scoring four unanswered goals in the first period that saw Spencer Aspden, Way, Blair Witmer and Hinschberger all add to their totals.

The second period started with a Rebel surge when Kalbe Ford beat Jacks goalie Jordan Bauman in the opening seconds. The Jacks would retaliate with a goal

“We did very well this past weekend and finally scored some goals and played great as a team, especially against Ayr,” said Jacks coach Kevin Fitzpatrick. “Sunday we started out strong and just fell asleep in the third period and we were lucky that Norfolk did not manage to tie the game up. We did let up a bit but we also hit a lot of goalposts that should

have gone in and the boys need to connect better but they put in a solid effort and hopefully they will continue in this direction. We had a few players, like Way, Hinschberger and Metzger that really stepped up and did a good job for us.”

The Jacks hit the road this weekend for back-to-back games starting on Saturday against the St. George Dukes before travelling to Burford Sunday to battle the Bulldogs.

anadian children’s entertainers The Skalywags not only have the kids laughing and dancing to their music but they keep the grown-ups entertained too.

The Skalywags are Steve Ofner of St. Clements on bass and Kitchener residents Duane Lipskie on guitar and Ed Wahba on drums.

The three men began playing as a rock band in high school when they were known as ‘The Nuts,’ performing cover songs while touring the beaches and local bars. They even released an album of original work in 1995.

Eventually those high school boys would grow up, get married and began to raise families.

“Some of us have kids now and it can really take a turn when you are playing bars until 3 a.m.: your kids don’t care what time you get home they expect you to be ready the next morning when they wake up,” said Lipskie. “I personally started to take a back seat to the band as I couldn’t really focus on it as much as I use to with

my family waiting for me at home.”

In 2005 Lipskie began to explore writing children’s stories and sat down with Ofner one day to discuss the idea.

“Being musicians we just automatically started putting catchy melodies to the words and it just seemed like a natural evolution for us,” said Lipskie.

The two men kept their new music a secret, even from bandmate Wahba, as they wanted to flesh out more ideas and tunes. Eventually they told Wahba about their new direction, and he was on board instantly. “(Wahba) embraced the new music right away and started to help with the arrangement of the music, revamping them with his unique style, dissecting them and making the music better,” said Ofner.

Constantly singing songs in his head, Wahba is always trying to find ways to make a song listenable.

“I don’t like things that repeat too much so in my mind I like to break up continuity and create little catches that will keep people interested,”

said Wahba.

The band began writing songs together and recently compiled the music into their first CD release called simply The Skalywags. The album was independently produced in Ofner’s home studio and boasts 10 original children’s songs.

“We don’t dumb down the music, because we don’t think the kids want that kind of music: we hit them as adults interacting with kids, and we don’t take them for granted,” said Ofner. “We personally feel that a lot of kid’s music out there is dumbed down.”

This approach to making children’s music comes from having their own children and realizing that kids are smarter than most adults give them credit for.

“We don’t do any hokey songs, it can be silly and there is a difference and you can tell when kids are into the song that they like it for the music not because it is hokey,” said Ofner.

Still working on their shtick the band makes sure shows flow by telling stories between songs and explain any hand gestures or move-

ments that the audience should make while they play.

“It’s all about being a kid and what it is like to be a kid, like brushing your teeth, getting dirty or losing your first tooth,” said Lipskie. “We hear back from parents too and they like the music just as much as the kids do and that is very rewarding knowing that we are making music for everyone to enjoy.”

The band has played small parties with an acoustic set up to larger events like the Hillside Festival in Guelph and Square to Square in Waterloo, where they have their full group performing including extra bandmates Tammy Stinson (Ofner’s wife) on vocals and the melodica, Shelley Fluri, on vocals, Trevor Fluri on guitar and Chris Brenneman playing percussion.

Stinson has recently taken on a larger role with the band, helping to promote the group and ensures the audience gets up and dancing during concerts.

“We needed an element to engage our audience, the music is not complicated but it is busy stuff and at first we were finding it hard to en-

gage the kids to get hopping and clapping and (Stinson) is that element that we were lacking. Plus, three middleaged men are not really appealing to kids so (Stinson) is the engaging factor of the group,” said Lipskie.

Over the last six months the band has been on a high, releasing their first CD in September and is performing the first Skalywag Holiday Hop Clap on Dec. 3 at the Waterloo Arts Centre starting at 1 p.m. The band will be playing their songs as well as a bunch of Christmas songs.

There is a $10 fee per family and that includes the show and a copy of the new CD. Donations for the Waterloo Region Food Bank will also be accepted at the show.

“It’s great to play to a crowd that is listening to your music, coming from the bar scene where no one is paying attention or you are playing to the guy sweeping the floor at the end of the night to have 20 or 30 kids jumping around in front of you is just amazing,” said Lipskie.

Peacefully passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at Doon Village Retirement Residence, Kitchener, at the age of 91 years, formerly of Elmira. Beloved wife of the late Lloyd H. Habel (February 11, 2011). Loving mother and motherin-law of the late Beverley Catherine Coles (August 23, 2011) and Gerry Coles of Elmira, and the late Warren Habel (1966). Cherished grandma of Cara Jean and Brad Janson of Kitchener, and great-grandma of Cole, Parker and Sidney. Jean is the last surviving member of her family having been predeceased by her parents Jacob and Clara (Seegmiller) Leis, her brother Harold Leis and her sister Betty Bricker.

At Jean’s request cremation has taken place.

A memorial service for family and friends to celebrate Jean’s life will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira.
