Elmira writer’s play included in new book

> Airport ranked number 13 in Canada The Region of Waterloo International Airport was ranked as the 13th busiest airport in Canada in a report released earlier this month by Statistics Canada.

In 2010, 105,561 passengers travelled through the airport, and there were 100,100 aircraft movements (a takeoff or a landing). Additionally, passenger traffic was up 16 per cent during the first quarter of 2011.

Accidental playwright Mike Grant’s “Hamish” part of anthology

> Gale turns sod for new church GETTING BACK TO OUR ROOTS “Hamish,” a play by Elmira writer Mike Grant, has been included in an anthology entitled Grassroots, released this week.

eing a playwright was something Michael Grant never planned on.

Grant studied theatre at Humber College and acted for a number of years professionally before he and his wife Sherry moved to Elmira in 2000.

When he joined the local theatre company he came up with an idea to perform children’s plays for the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival. At the time he could not find any plays about maple syrup and he ended up writing three different scripts for the festival.

“I never intended to become a writer,” said Grant.

“I went off to theatre school to be an actor and then gravitated to directing when I got involved with Elmira and now this writing thing has just taken over.”

Grant’s play “Hamish,” a comedy about a Canadian couple who travel to Scotland and discover about their family roots, has been chosen to be a part of a new anthology entitled Grassroots.

The book, released Wednesday, is a collection of five full-length plays that have premiered in community theatres in Ontario, all written by local playwrights. The common theme running through the plays is the examination of family roots and how they

affect the choices families make.

“It’s about the importance of family, heritage and love,” said Grant. “That feeling of having roots and the connectedness seems to be the common thread through the plays.”

Inspired by the adoption of their first son, Brendan, Grant began to examine his own Scottish roots which led to him to write “Hamish.”

“It took about four years to write,” said Grant. “I offered to direct the play in Elmira in 2007 and from the success of that it was picked up and performed in Kincardine in 2008.”

Ontario’s community theatre coordinator, suggested that Grant submit the play to the anthology.

“I was on cloud nine when I found out it had been chosen,” said Grant.

“My dream was just to have it performed and now it is in a book – that is just beyond my expectations.”

Grant, who works as an operations manager for Bell Canada, hopes the inclusion of his play will lead to more writing gigs.

“That would be the ultimate goal, to write for a living,” said Grant.

As for any future plans to revisit “Hamish,” Grant jokingly says “I’m holding out for the movie deal.”

Gale Presbyterian Church in Elmira held a sod turning celebration last Sunday at the site of its new building at 10 Barnswallow Dr. Some 60 people attended despite the wet weather.

The ceremony was the culmination of eight years of fundraising to build a replacement for the cramped quarters at 2 Cross St. Construction of the new church is expected to take 10 months.

Take caution before allowing sales people in, say police call about a three suspicious teens walking around the area of Sawmill Road and Snyder’s Flats Road looking into cars along the street. When police arrived the three suspects were gone.

May 14 > 1:18 PM A break-and-enter

was reported at the corner store in Linwood on Ament Line and Gordon Hain Street. The suspects attempted to break in by forcing their way through a rear window of the store. There was $200 in property damage done to the outside of the store but nothing was stolen.

> 10:10 PM A white male in his

30s was reported to be walking nude along Porch Light Drive in Elmira. When the police arrived they could not find anyone who matched that description.

were spotted in the township parking lot off of Church and Arthur streets in Elmira stealing gasoline from parked vehicles. A witness watched

the teens get into a vehicle and managed to record the license plate. Police managed to track down the suspects who confessed to the theft and will be dealt with under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

May 15 > 2:36 PM A single-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle occurred on Arthur Street near Oriole Parkway. A 16-year-old driver fell off the bike when he tried to stop at a red light and skidded along the wet road.

No charges were laid. The motorcycle had minor damages and the driver sustained minor injuries.

There was a fuel leak from the vehicle which prompted police to close off the road, including Chilligo Road. The 34-yearold driver sustained minor injuries. Hydro was called in to repair the downed power lines.

Wellesley agrees to 2.5% wage hike W

ellesley councillors have rejected a request by senior staff to implement a three per cent cost of living increase to wages retroactive to Jan. 1, settling instead on a 2.5 per cent increase.

In a 3-2 vote at council on Tuesday night, the motion was defeated and an amendment made to adjust the wage increase to be more in line with the provincial average. According to Statistics Canada, in 2010 the consumer price index rose by 2.5 per cent in Ontario and 1.8 per cent across Canada, prompting staff to make the request to help cover rising costs such as fuel and other commodities.

The increase would apply to council, full and part-time nonunion employees and any other positions employed by the township in a casual part-time or volunteer manner, including firefighters. The increase would have amounted to $32,991.66, including $493.38 for the

mayor and $299.55 for each councilor.

The increases do not apply to Township of Wellesley unionized workers, as they are in their final year of a three-year contract in which council approved an across-the-board cost of living increase of 1.5 per cent each year.

The fact that the requested increase of three per cent would be more than the provincial and national average was the main sticking point for Coun.

Herb Neher, prompting a discussion just before the motion was passed.

“I would like to know of all the people who got a three per cent cost of living increase in the township, because I’m not aware of any myself,” he said. “I don’t have a problem with a cost of living increase, but I think three per cent is too high. I can’t approve that.”

Neher said that since Ontario’s average increase was 2.5 per cent while also incorporating higher-cost areas such as Toronto and Ottawa, compared to the

relatively lower taxes and costs of living in Wellesley, he could not justify an increase of three per cent for township employees.

“I would have one heck of a time selling that to anybody, that when the average is 2.5 per cent in Ontario, and 1.8 per cent in Canada, we should be getting three per cent. It’s that simple.

“We’re dealing with taxpayers’ money.”

As an alternative, Neher suggested the increase be reduced to 2.5 per cent to keep in line with the provincial average, and requested an amendment to the motion and a recorded vote. Councillors Neher and Jim Olender, along with Mayor Ross Kelterborn, approved the revised figure, while councillors Shelley Wagner and Paul Hergott were opposed.

Under the new agreement of 2.5 per cent, the wage increase will amount to a total of $31,342.08 ($1,606.98 for council and the mayor) for 2011, retroactive to Jan. 1.

ost of us would likely associate food drives with Christmas, Thanksgiving or even Easter – a time when food is on our minds and when we often think of those who are less fortunate.

Yet last Saturday the Food Bank of Waterloo Region initiated a oneday food drive blitz in an effort to raise awareness and restock their shelves in preparation for the busy summer

months.

In total, 500 volunteers at 40 sites – including Foodland and No Frills in Elmira and the Foodland in St. Clements – collected 122,950 lbs of food in the effort known as Dig In. “We’re really happy with not just the volume of food that we received, but with the enthusiasm that the entire community showed in so many ways and that they were able to dig in and help us out,” said Wendi Campbell,

executive director of the food bank.

Residents of Elmira and St. Clements pulled their own weight for the campaign, donating more than 2,500 lbs of food at the three grocery stores, and 20 volunteers donated their time throughout the day to collect the food and sort it. They also received $231 in cash donations which will be used to buy perishable items such as eggs,

He always felt a strange sort of kinship with him that carried through out his life; when he reached his mid-40s Spencer decided to investigate his grandfather’s life.

“I tried to learn a little bit more about him,” said Spencer. “What I found out was I am a lot like him, including the good, the bad and the ugly.”

Through researching his grandfather Spencer came up with an idea for a novel: My Grandfather’s Garden.

“The book is a story of a mystical relationship of a grandfather and a young boy,” said Spencer. “In my mind I imagined that there is a special bond between a young boy and a grand-

father and being able to help your grandfather in the garden was a wonderful metaphor for how he imparted life lesson through the relationship.”

There are a lot of facts built into the story Spencer said.

“It’s very true in a spiritual sense, the setting and people – most everything about it is true. The whole relationship culminates in the book when the grandfather tells the boy about a key he has hidden and the quest to find the key unlocks the 10 lessons for living.

The key is a metaphor for my grandfather’s love and his ability to cross a bridge of time and create a relationship with me.”

Project Hope helps feed widows and orphans in the African countries of Tanzania and Zambia.

According to Spencer if he sells 1,000 books that will raise $4,500, which will be enough to feed 25 women and their families for a year.

“I write just out of the joy of writing and my stories are small, easy to read in a hour.

I try to rekindle the art of storytelling and use it in a way to help impart lessons to other people and at the same time raise money for charity,” said Spencer.

CPAC meetings to resume next month

wo orientation sessions will get the Chemtura Public Advisory back in gear after a layoff going back to last fall. The meetings are set for June 8 and 15.

The sessions – the first featuring a presentation from the Ministry of the Environment and the second from Chemtura Co. – will mark the first public meetings of CPAC. Mayor Todd Cowan will chair the group following the decision of Coun. Julie-Anne Herteis to resign from com-

mittee.

Also stepping down before the first meeting was West Montrose resident Lynne Hare, who resigned Monday citing family obligations and time concerns given her new understanding of the “enormity the commitment to CPAC would involve.”

Hare is already involved in the gravel pit debate currently underway in the township.

One person who will certainly be attending is Alan Marshall, the Elmira resident recently removed from the

For his part, Marshall said this week

he annual Quilt & Fibre Art Festival is returning to Waterloo Region next week, and there is a wide range of activities and events to keep even the most dedicated quilter busy.

From May 24 to 28, venues in St. Jacobs, Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo and New Hamburg will be home to the 16th annual festival that has attracted renowned quilt experts from around North America to Waterloo

Region.

Churches, businesses and community centres will open their doors to celebrate all things quilting.

According to the festival’s president, the entire quilt industry has moved beyond simple bed coverings to becoming a real art form.

“Whether it’s on a bed or hanging on a wall, it’s expanded and pushed out further than a traditional quilt that someone might have just on their bed for warmth,” said Lynn Wolf.

“Certainly if anyone

wants a quilt, [this] would definitely be a great place to head out to see some beautiful work.”

A full slate of activities is planned throughout the region, from quilting demonstrations, appraisals and workshops, to the now famous Mennonite Relief Sale, which auctions off quilts on the 27th and 28th of May to raise funds for Mennonite Central Committee projects around the world.

Weather likely to dampen holiday weekend May's on pace to set another record for rain, just as April did before it James Jackson

T

he May long weekend has long trumpeted the arrival of the summer season to Canada, and for many people it’s an excuse to unpack the tents, throw some drinks in the cooler and enjoy time with friends outdoors.

Unfortunately, the weather doesn’t always cooperate, and that has the potential to set a negative tone for the rest of the summer.

“It is probably one of the most important weekends of the year to not only get the forecast right, but if there was a way to cook it so we could have perfect

weather, we would,” mused meteorologist David Phillips of Environment Canada.

“A lot of plans are made on this weekend.

People look at it as the first weekend of summer, and even though there is a month to go, it is the kickoff to the summer season.”

While the wet, cool weather this past week may have left many hoping for a clear and sunny weekend ahead, it would seem that this May long weekend is destined to be one of rain and thunderstorms.

The outlook for Saturday is a 40 per cent chance of showers, an

80 per cent on Sunday along with thundershowers, and a 90 per cent chance of rain on the holiday Monday, with the threat of thunder showers yet again.

One bright side of the weekend will be that it is expected to warm up considerably from the single-digit temperatures we endured earlier in the week.

Friday should reach 22 degrees, Sunday could touch 24 degrees, and Monday could see highs of 22, with lows in the evening never dipping below 11 degrees.

Beyond the money and the sentimentality of quilts, the week also provides an opportunity for quilters to spend time together to share their passion with each other, and to explore and discover the works of other artists.

“For many people what’s fun is they just jump in the car and it’s like a little tour, they go

to this place and that place, and so they have a lot of fun with it,” said Wolf.

“It’s amazing to see what people come up with, and they’re very inspirational; they have a lot of creativity that is somewhat humbling. I think a lot of people just get inspired.”

Leading up to last Sunday, May had seen 64 mm of rainfall, while May typically only sees about 78 mm of rain for the entire month – a fitting continuation of the record precipitation we saw in April when 95 mm of precipitation fell to the ground, easily surpassing the monthly average of 76 mm.

Phillips added that with the rain we’ve seen this week and into the weekend, it’s likely we’ll surpass May’s average precipitation rates as well.

He attributes the wet spring to what he called a “stalling, stationary pattern” of wet weather where large storms are sticking around like unwanted houseguests, rather than hitting and running like weather typically does in Ontario.

Stan Deckert gets his due F

or nearly 80 years, Stan Deckert was a pillar of the Linwood community and worked tirelessly to make it a better place to live for his friends, his neighbours and his family.

On May 15 Deckert was finally recognized for his lifelong service to the Township of Wellesley by being inducted into the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame in the Community Builders category.

Deckert, who passed away in 2002, was inducted into the hall along with seven other individuals and two sports teams in front of more than 350 people at the Waterloo Region Museum.

Born in 1925 and raised on a farm on the edge of Linwood, Deckert was highly respected throughout the community for his dedication to the town and to the region through his community service and volunteerism.

His life included long-time leadership roles with the Linwood Lions Club, the park board and Snofest. He was also a volunteer firefighter with the Lin-

Deckert also helped bring a community centre to Linwood in the 1960s, was instrumental in getting two ball diamonds – and lights – to the community, he helped find space for a new fire hall and library in the town, and was the driving force behind a sister-city initiative with Linwood, Michigan.

On the day of his induction his wife, Marion, was present along with their seven daughters, most of their grandchildren and even some of their great-grandchildren.

“That made it so special for mom,” said daughter Debbie Dietrich who accepted the award on his behalf.

“Those are the generations that only hear stories, and you can tell them this and tell them that, but this brings dad back to life for that generation and proves to them why we were so proud of dad.”

Dietrich said that with her father’s passing back in 2002, the family had hoped he would have been recognized for his service to the community earlier, but for many years nothing happened. That is until Julie Schnurr, Wellesley Township’s representative in the Community Builders Research Committee, came across his name about two years ago and felt he was worthy of recognition.

“His contribution to the good of Wellesley Township was through his community service and it was exemplary,” said Schnurr, who has lived in Linwood since 1990. “It crossed all paths: as a councillor, as a volunteer, and in all of the fundraising he did for the town and the township. All

That personal character is evident in one of the many personal stories that Dietrich shared about her father. She can remember back in the 1970s when Linwood was close to getting municipal water and sewers, and while Deckert thought

it was going to be a wonderful thing for the town and wanted it to happen, he also knew most of his constituents were against it.

“I remember the night they had the vote and mom asked dad, ‘How are you going to vote?’ and dad said ‘I have to vote against it.

The people I represent don’t want it so I have to vote against it,’ and that to me was what a politician should be, they should speak for the people they are representing, and that’s what he always did.”

Waste issue a big part of nuclear power debate

W

orried about the potential ecological impacts of a proposed nuclear waste site in Kincardine, among other threats, the Council of Canadians is calling for the Great Lakes to be declared a commons, public trust and protected bioregion.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has submitted a proposal for a deep geologic disposal facility on the Bruce Nuclear site in Kincardine, Ontario. The facility will be 680 metres underground and only one mile away from Lake Huron. A network of tunnels and storage caverns, in which up to 200,000 cubic metres of radioactive waste would be buried, are planned for the site.

Public hearings in Canada are expected to be held in 2012. The facility could open in 2013 and start receiving waste by 2018.

OPG states that the repository will hold low-level and intermediate-level

waste. However, there are growing concerns that once the facility is approved, high-level waste will also be deposited at the site posing an even larger threat to the Great Lakes, says the organization.

The OPG plan is in keeping with a Nuclear Waste Management Organization report citing the desirability of burying nuclear matter in geological formations such as those found in southern Ontario, a very real issue given the province’s plan to spend some $40 billion on nuclear power.

The risk from buried waste close to home is likely greater than a Chernobyl-style accident, though events at the Fukushima nuclear plant have raised that specter again.

Nuclear energy remains a nonstarter with environmentalists despite recent efforts to tout the technology as a solution to global warming because it does not emit greenhouse gases. That argument smacks of opportunism, while sweeping a host of other, more toxic impacts under the rug.

Even if you don’t put stock in the ecological downside of nuclear, there are plenty of other pitfalls. Nuclear power’s track record is horrendous: massive cost overruns in construction, generating efficiency that is always less than stated, reactors that break down more often and cost more money to repair than what the experts promised. Nobody talks anymore of ‘power too cheap to meter.’

When the engineers and politicians can’t get the basics right, how can we trust what they say about handling the toxic byproducts?

Instead of backing mega-projects, the government would be much further ahead to back renewable energy sources, to make Canada a leader in those technologies, environmentalists argue. That’s the future, and the demand is global – there’s a whole new economy waiting to be developed.

In the near term, conservation is the most important factor. We need to lower demand, particularly peak demand, which is the most expensive electricity to provide.

Fall of Dominique Strauss-Kahn good news for Sarkozy Y International ou couldn’t fall farther or faster than Dominique Strauss-Kahn. He was not only the head of the International Monetary Fund. Until last weekend, he was almost certainly within a year of being elected president of France. Now he sits in a small cell in New York City’s notorious Rikers Island prison, denied bail and waiting to learn if a grand jury will indict him for attempted rape, a criminal sexual act, and unlawful imprisonment. It probably will.

It is not possible to know for sure what happened in his $3,000-a-day luxury suite in the Sofitel hotel in Manhattan at lunchtime on May 14, but the New York police took a chambermaid’s allegations of forced oral sex and attempted rape seriously enough to pull Strauss-Kahn off an Air France plane just before it took off for Paris later that afternoon. Now the IMF is headless, and the French presidential race is transformed.

DSK, as he is known to the French media, is finished politically no matter what happens next. The events in New York have finally made the French media break their silence about his private behaviour, and what has come out has been damning.

The French media routinely ignore the kind of sexual liaisons that would ruin a politician’s career if they became known in a more puritanical country like the United States. But DSK, it has become clear, was not just your average libertine.

In a recent interview Strauss-Kahn himself said that he faced three difficulties if he were to run for president: “Money, women and the fact I am Jewish.” But the money, which comes from his heiress wife, didn’t really put many people off, and although

GWYNNE DYER everybody knew he was Jewish he was still the most popular presidential candidate by far. (France’s first Jewish leader was Leon Blum, 75 years ago.)

It is Strauss-Kahn’s behaviour towards women that has done him in.

Even if he is found innocent in the New York incident, he now also faces the claim that he tried to rape Tristane Banon, a novelist and journalist, in 2002.

Banon was persuaded not to pursue the issue at that time by her mother, Anne Mansouret, a senior figure in the Socialist Party who saw DSK as a rising star in the party. He was also a family friend. But Mansouret supports her daughter’s claim that Strauss-Kahn attacked her sexually, acting, as Banon puts it, “like a chimpanzee in rut.”

None of this would be getting much publicity if Dominique Strauss-Kahn were just another French businessman arrested abroad. Even if he were just the head of the IMF, it would be a oneday wonder. But DSK was the favourite to win the Socialist nomination for the presidency of France, and then to trounce the unpopular right-wing incumbent, President Nicolas Sarkozy, in the elections next spring.

His departure from the race means that Sarkozy, despite having the lowest approval rating for any French president ever, could yet snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Here’s how it could happen.

The French left, with no single

strong candidate like DSK to unite behind, splits and puts up several rival candidates for the presidency. (Something similar happened in 2002.) With the left-wing vote hopelessly split, the leading two parties in the first round of voting next April are Sarkozy’s right-wing Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and the ultra-right-wing National Front. (That happened in 2002, too.)

Neither the UMP nor the National Front has won even 20 per cent of the vote, but as the two leading parties they go through to the second round of voting in May. And since the great majority of French people loathe the National Front and think it unworthy of office, they hold their noses and vote for Sarkozy, who wins 80 per cent of the vote despite being the least popular French president in history.

That’s almost exactly what happened in 2002, when another right-wing president, Jacques Chirac, who was widely believed to be corrupt, won a second term in a run-off against the National Front’s founder and then leader, JeanMarie Le Pen. (One of the posters in the second round of voting that time simply read: “Vote for the Crook, Not the Fascist!”)

Similarly, Sarkozy may end up in a run-off against Le Pen’s daughter Marine, who now leads the National Front. All the polls indicate that she could not possibly win such a contest.

DSK’s fall may mean Sarkozy’s survival – which is why more than half of the French, and 70 per cent of French socialists, believe that Strauss-Kahn was the victim of a plot.

Kneejerk thinking not needed to get tough on crime T

alking tough on crime helped Stephen Harper secure his majority government. Many Canadians bought into the rhetoric, despite the facts. Crime rates are declining even as the government pledges to spend billions of dollars more.

Adding to the problem is the fact the Conservatives worked steadfastly to hide just how much their unneeded pet project is going to cost.

By Parliamentary Budget Officer Kevin Page’s calculations, at least $10 billion, a few times more than the figures the government is even willing to acknowledge.

It’s probably asking too much, but the majority win gives Harper the chance to back away from the program, saving the money for deficit fighting or channeling into more productive avenues. If reducing crime is really the goal, building prisons is not the answer: crime prevention is.

The numbers are telling. Page notes that a projected increase of 4,200 prisoners would require $1.8 billion in new facilities, plus another $3 billion each year to operate them.

The costs of keeping prisoners varies from $140,527 to $223,687 for a man, depending on the security level of the prison. For women, the cost is $343,810.

All told, annual spending on prisons would hit at least $9.3 billion in the next five years, up from $4.3 billion today.

Critics say the money would be better spent on much cheaper and far more effective prevention strategies, including the reduction of child poverty and a host of social improvements dismissed by the government.

Fact is, politicians of a certain

In our present state of knowledge, it’s simply not possible to say with confidence what happened or why. But it’s pretty safe to say that Sarkozy will be the biggest beneficiary.

Most of us want criminals and their associates scooped up off the streets and incarcerated, preferably forever. The howls of outrage are loudest when a heinous crime is perpetrated by a felon out on bail or parole. Such cases are common, unfortunately. When it comes to crime, a harsh crackdown is often the public’s desire. Treating offenders in a manner outside of the standard system – perhaps reconciling offenders and their victims – strikes many as counterintuitive. Yet that’s exactly what groups such as Waterloo Region’s Community Justice Initiatives advocate, including restorative justice programs pioneered locally.

Restorative justice is a way of addressing conflict and crime that engages the person who caused the harm, people who were affected by the harm, and the community.

The Kitchener-based group is known for having created the first restorative justice program. The launch goes back to 1974, to what has become known as the “Elmira case” – Woolwich roots for the concept.

Back in May 1974, two 18-year-olds – Paul Leibold of Elmira and Russell Kelly of Mount Forest – went on an overnight vandalism spree in Elmira. The pair was linked to 23 complaints of property damage.

Although nothing of the sort had been done before, a judge let the two youths meet with the victims. The idea was to let them see the consequences of their actions, and to try to make good on the vandalism.

Since that time, supporters of alternatives have been fighting something of an uphill battle trying to convince people that vengeance and punishment aren’t always the best way to go when dealing with wrongdoers … nor their victims, for that matter.

If the goal is to make our communities safer, then prevention and diversion have a better chance of making that a reality, they argue.

The support system extends right back to early childhood – it’s the ounce-of-prevention theory. An investment in childhood well-being pays dividends 20 or 30 years down the road. And therein lies the problem: that’s long-term thinking in a

short-term world.

Politicians are worried about the latest polls and the next election.

Putting more cops on the streets, introducing minimum sentences and even building more jails can be done relatively quickly and in a highly visible way. Many of today’s elected officials aren’t likely to be around, let alone running for office, in two or three decades, so there is no self-serving incentive to plan that far ahead.

However, simply building more prisons is no answer, as we've seen in the U.S. Between 1970 and 2000, the general population grew by 40 per cent, the prison population by 500 per cent, aided by a push for private, for-profit mega-prisons.

At the same time, cuts have been made to crime prevention and victims’ aid programs. As well, policies have exacerbated the link between poverty and crime rates.

We’ve seen similar changes here under the Conservative government, including a 70 per cent cut to crime prevention funding.

There is no easy solution. Prevention involves a host of issues, starting with good environments for children. Housing, daycare, schools, the economy all play a role. Linking them in the public’s mind is an important step in creating a future with less crime and violence.

The fact is the oil industry is a volume business, so profits will always be large. Further, it is expensive to search for oil, to extract it from the ground, to refine it, and to ship it to gas stations. Profits ensure a continuous supply of new oil.

Second, Canadians aren’t “providing oil companies with millions of dollars in excess profits,” the oil companies are providing a product that allows us to drive to work to earn a living, for food to be produced and delivered to stores so we can eat, so homes can be heated so people don’t freeze to death in winter and many, many other functions vital to our society. Does the editorial board have any idea what our lives would be like without oil?

I am certain they don’t.

Third, it is posited that oil compa-

nies are “gouging” because of the “excess profits” earned. Question: who gets to decide what an excess profit is? The word profit is used here as if it’s a bad thing, but does the editorial board understand that millions of Canadians own stocks and mutual funds which hold oil companies? These profits are helping Canadians earn wealth for retirement, but apparently that’s a bad thing.

We are not living up to our reputation as “Smart City” when this kind of flat-out false information is propagated by a media with an obvious agenda. The government has tried for years to demonstrate gouging in the oil industry as it is politically expedient to demonize these companies, and each time they fail. They will fail this time also.

Oil companies aren't gouging us To the Editor,  In regards the editorial “Rising gas prices are nothing but pure profit” (Observer, May 14/11), it demonstrates the complete ignorance of both the editorial board and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, when it comes to the oil industry and basic economics.

First, the editorial gives only cursory mention of the most relevant financial concept here, which is not profit, but profit margin. Oil companies make less than 10 per cent profit, but that is not mentioned.

For example, the last time gas prices spiked in 2008, the biggest American oil company, Exxon Mobil, had an annual profit of roughly $40 billion. Outrageous! However,

Elmira Wellness Centre expands offerings to help in management of chronic diseases Colin Dewar

rom relaxation to treatment for overworked muscles and then to general well-being, massage has played an increasing role in an expanded health-care model. Now, that function is expanding again as massage therapy is proving to be extremely good medicine for treating those with chronic diseases such as cancer.

Registered massage therapists Krista Sandelli and Julie Wemp of the Elmira Wellness Centre have recently completed a specialized course in massage and the late effects of cancer and cancer treatment.

“Massage is being recognized as a source of significant benefit for people with cancer or who have had cancer in the past,” said Sandelli.

The therapists at the centre are now treating patients with any stage of cancer after consent has been received from their

oncologist.

“We will sit with the patient and discuss a full health history and develop a personalized treatment plan,” said Wemp. “We have to get the go ahead, we will not work on any undiagnosed masses or lumps that a patient may have.”

The treatment massages may be shorter, gentler and scheduled around the patient’s good and bad days.

The therapists customize and personalize the massage to treat any source of cancer through out any stage.

“They have recently done studies which have proven that massage is a source of significant benefit for people who have cancer or cancer in the past,” said Sandelli. “We take all the safety precautions that need to be in place when working with someone with cancer.”

According to Sandelli, massage therapists are now included as part of the recovery team at some cancer centers in Canada for

A new way to discover what rural Ontario thinks

O

ut there, somewhere, where it’s particularly green and lush from buckets and buckets of rain and moderate temperatures, is local, rural Ontario.

Some of us live in it, some live beside it, some seldom see it. But as we become more aware of all things local, it’s inevitable our focus will turn there. What goes on in rural Ontario – food production, recreation, environmental and conservation activities, tourism, transportation – is vital to the province.

Ontario is continually looking for ways to make the rural part of the province better understood, and develop policies that help deepen its sustainability.

That’s where the Rural Ontario Institute comes in. It’s a still-new organization whose time has arrived, with a mandate to catalyze dialogue, collaboration and action on issues facing rural Ontario.

Born out of an amalgamation a year ago of The Centre for Rural Leadership and The Ontario Rural Council , it emphasizes and delivers leadership training and development, among other things.

One of its goals is to connect the range of rural stakeholders across our broad geography and across an array of topics. To that end, it’s created a program called Community Exchange, and an interesting initiative it’s named the Rural Ontario Reader. I believe that besides

Food For Thought Owen Roberts connecting rural people, the reader will also give urbanites a glimpse of what’s going on with their rural neighbours.

The reader is a free (until next year) online resource of the latest news, views and information emanating from or about rural Ontario. It was created by the institute using the Netvibes publishing platform, which automatically combs the blogosphere for government news, regional news services and more, and then updates them live in an orderly, curated manner by source on the Rural Ontario Reader.

To me, this is rural Ontario’s answer to the renowned Utne Reader, which is proficient at gathering stories and essays about new or alternative ideas between its covers, and Reader’s Digest, except that it’s not promoting any one particular ideology or position (other than a greater understanding of rural issues). That neutrality makes it a superb research tool for anyone inside or outside academic circles, including politicians and policy

makers, trying to take the pulse of the countryside.

And that’s the further beauty of it – its mere existence acknowledges and promotes the fact rural Ontario has a multitude of concerns and voices. That’s been seen as a weakness in the past, because decision makers said they had a hard time focusing on issues when so many voices were speaking. But like the institute itself, the reader can help funnel those voices and ultimately serve as a focal point for their availability to anyone who wants or needs them.

So what’s there?

Well, to begin with, there’s news about research at the University of Guelph, written by my SPARK students. There are academic journals devoted to rural issues, such as the Journal of Extension, and Rural Sociology. The impressive Canadian

Rural Research Network is represented, with entries about research into shopping habits of rural versus urban Canadians. So are other rural interests such as the Gateway to Rural Health, the Centre for Rural Strategies in the U.S., and the Rural Renewal Monitor. Municipal politicians will be attracted to headlines from Municipal World magazine. And news about farming is there too, thanks to Farms.com and Today’s Farmer being present.

Congratulations to the institute for synthesizing all this material on one site. It’s an extremely progressive initiative, and it will certainly help rural people share information with others, track their own issues and simultaneously give them a louder, more identifiable voice.

Helping hands Three Elmira residents among group heading to AIDS clinic in Kenya James Jackson

E

ven though we live in a world that is almost infinitely connected through technology, three Elmira residents are living proof that word-of-mouth is still one of the most effective ways to help change the world.

On June 12, Jaye Rice, Laura Jane Weber and Tina Weltz – along with five other individuals from KitchenerWaterloo and Montreal – are travelling to Kenya to work in an AIDS clinic and at the community centre in a small village called Matangwe, about nine hours from the capital

city of Nairobi.

They are travelling as part of Caring Partners Global, an inter-denominational ministry that seeks to serve underprivileged communities throughout the world with a focus of working with vulnerable groups and communities, to identify and implement sustainable strategies and programs that would enable them to experience optimum health and hope.

Rice, a pastor at the Benton Street Baptist church in Kitchener, heard about the organization because the founders and directors of the organization – Stephen and Sylvia

ra – was planning a return to Kenya.

She will be using her skills as a photographer to help document the work the volunteers will be doing and to help spread the word back here in Canada.

“I’ve travelled internationally but not to the extent of where we’re going – so it’s really exciting to take that next step and see the world on the other side,” she said.

Finally, Weber – who is starting her studies at the University of Guelph in the fall in biomedical science with the aim of becoming a doctor –

He travelled to the clinic for the first time in 2009, and has wanted to return ever since to help continue their work.

“I have to admit that Africa was never one of my destination spots. I hate the heat,” Rice laughed. “If I could do something in Alaska, I’d do it, but I was encouraged to go and I went and I just loved it.”

Weltz, an award-winning photographer in Elmira at Calla Studio, has devoted much of her time and energy to helping the less fortunate, and said she wanted to get involved when she heard that Rice – her neighbour in Elmi-

was looking for a way to get involved this summer in an aid project like Caring Partners Global, but didn’t know where to begin. So she started by talking to her aunt – who happens to be Rice’s physiotherapist – and before she knew it, Weber was recruited to join the team as well.

Elmira getting ready to go medieval James Jackson

t’s time to dust off your armour and sharpen up your swords: Gibson Park in Elmira is soon to be transformed into a land of medieval mayhem as the 11th annual Robin in the Hood festival is nearly set to return.

The event is the brainchild of Elmira District Secondary School drama teacher DJ Carroll, but has taken on a life of its own in the past decade.

What started as a small festival with only 50 cast members has grown to more than 160 this year, as well as another 50 to 60 volunteers that will help on the day of the event.

Many of them include former students of Carroll’s and other local actors and volunteers who continue to return year after year for the excitement and fun the day has to offer.

“My last year of high school was my first year in Robin in the Hood, and I went from being an actor to helping with the costumes to helping with education day to now being the assistant director of the festival,” said Erin Frape, now in her tenth year with the festival. She said that being involved in the event this long has allowed her to watch squires as young as seven or eight grow up and become more involved in the festival

On June 2 there will be an education day that’s closed to the public and aimed at Grade 4 students from throughout southwestern Ontario who are bused to the park for a day of workshops and fun activities to help them learn more about the medieval time period, while doing more than just reading a textbook or sitting behind a desk.

It will take two full days of travelling to reach Matangwe after layovers in Amsterdam and Nairobi, followed by a nine-hour drive to the town closest to the clinic called Bondo. Rice says that they could fly from Nairobi closer to Bondo, but he believes it is better to drive the entire way in order to gain a full appreciation of the country and the people who live there.

The clinic is seven kilometres from the main road leading from the town of Bondo and 72 kilometres from the nearest provincial hospital in Kisumu, Kenya’s third largest city.

“It makes more sense to drive because you can kind of see the transition from the big city to the smaller villages and you get a sense of the fact that near Nairobi there are a lot of white people, but as you leave and head to Matangwe you become it,” said Rice.

While in Matangwe the group will be helping in any way they can, whether it’s working in the HIV/ AIDS clinic, helping in the orphanage, performing manual labour around the compound or running educational classes, it’s all appreciated by the people who live there or who travel to the clinic.

Through the clinic that was built in 2001, the Matangwe project offers 14,000 residents pre- and post-natal care, nutritional education, lab test-

ing, basic health care and more. The clinic continues to expand and grow to support the health of Matangwe and surrounding communities.

Further initiatives including educational, agricultural and life skills programs offer sustainable solutions to the problems faced by vulnerable individuals of the community. The clinic services 17 nearby villages and also runs mobile clinics in the most remote areas so residents don’t have to travel as far to receive care.

Last year they completed a community centre that is used to teach practical skills like carpentry and sewing, but the compound also includes a chicken coop used to produce eggs and meat for sale. They’ve even built a mortuary that sees about 10 bodies go through every week. Rice said that people come from as far as Nairobi to use the mortuary because it is so well run.

Another member of their group will be offering a workshop on how to deal with diabetes, which is extremely prevalent in Africa because of the popularity of Coke, as well as their high reliance on corn in their diet.

“They drink Coca-Cola more than they drink water there, basically because it’s clean but also because Coke has done a great job of telling people that’s what they should be drinking, so there’s a lot of sugar in their diet,” said Rice of why diabetes is such an enormous problem.

The number of students participating in the education day has grown from about 400 the first year for a half-day seminar to about 1,100 this year for a full-day seminar – with just as many on the waiting list hoping to get in, said Frape.

The main attraction, however, is on June 3 when the park will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Visitors can spend some time in Sherwood Forest with Robin and his gang of outlaws where they can shoot a real bow and arrow, play

outlaw games and learn about birds of prey. They can also walk around the village area, explore the castle or wander among the shops and vendors who will be selling leather goods, armour, toys and other period novelties.

There are 25 actors this year playing the role of knights and every half-hour there is a tournament scheduled between a group of knights, and every hour there will be a different show scheduled so visitors can listen to medieval music, learn about crime and punishment in medieval times, or go to knight school where they can wear armour, hold a sword or fire a catapult.

The event is just as much fun for the actors as it is for the public as well.

“These type of festivals are great because a lot of it is improv, as opposed to being on a stage with a script where it’s very set,” said Neil Murray, who has played the lead role of Robin Hood at the festival for the past 10 years.

“You can play with people and make it up as you go, which is a lot of fun in these environments.”

Admission is $4 per person or $12 for a family of five or fewer.

“We’ve really been focusing the past few years on making it as authentic as possible and trying to get people to believe they’ve walked out of Elmira and into Nottingham,” said Frape with a smile.

Maryhill snowboarder Matt Carter has earned a World Cup berth after finishing first in the North America Cup series.

att Carter misses the snow.

The 21-year-old Maryhill native has a good reason though: he’s a competitive alpine snowboarder.

Earning a World Cup berth after finishing first in the North America Cup series this past winter, Carter is well on his way of accomplishing his ultimate goal: making it to the Olympics.

“I started skiing when I was two and by the time I was seven I got bored with the sport and convinced my parents to let me try snowboarding,” said Carter. “As a

birthday present they agreed to get me a lesson, rent me a board for the day – I never put on another pair of skis again.”

Carter started snowboarding in 1998 which was the first time snowboarding made an appearance at the Olympics.

“That year Canadian Ross Rebagliati won those games and I was just starting out and when I saw that I had this realization ‘that’s what I want to do.’”

After a few years of lessons Carter entered the Association of Ontario Snowboarders series at age 11 and began a life dedicated to the sport.

He started entering boarder cross, half pipe and alpine events but decided to focus his attention primarily to the alpine.

“I was never very good at the half pipe and in my first boarder cross I was up against a group of 14 year olds, who seemed like giants at the time, and they looked down at me and told me to just hang back and you won’t get hurt,” said Carter.

“They all ended up piling up in a corner and taking each other out and I just scooted by but I ended up crashing at the very end of the race and chipping my tooth and that was my last boarder cross

race.”

At age 15 Carter entered his first Federation Internationale de Ski and has been competing ever since.

The season begins in August and sees Carter crisscrossing the globe. Starting in New Zealand for six weeks, Carter will travel back to Canada, the U.S. and Europe until he finally comes home at the end of April.

“The sport has given me a chance to see a lot of different place in the world, but I do live out of a suitcase for the better part of a year. I try not to think about it. It comes with the territory. You either accept it or you let it

stress you out.”

Carter said he stays grounded with the help of his parents, who are his biggest supporters.

“It would be impossible to do what I do without their support; they were always 100 per cent behind me and have always supported my progression,” he said.

The success of a snowboarder is based entirely on individual feats and living with teammates who are also your competition can be a bit tricky at times, he maintains.

Bottom bouncing’s not an activity for everyone

B

efore you get too upset by the contents of this column, I think it’s only fair to warn you that this will not contain any of my regular, wholesome family fare. Instead, I am writing about an activity that’s carried out in private, often secret, places by consenting adults, mostly in the dark of night, too. Yes, I’m about to describe the type of activity that only a complete lout would talk about in mixed company. That’s right, we’re going to discuss walleye fishing.

Let’s first concede that a lot of articles have been written on the subject of walleye fishing, but very few have been interesting. This article, I hope, will be in keeping with that fine tradition.

No article on the subject would be complete without first examining that old saying used by walleye anglers. “If you are not snagging bottom every now and again, you’re not doing it right,” they say.

Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve Galea The problem with that statement is that no one ever mentions the second part of it, which is, “If you’re doing it right, you’ll need more lures than what you’ve got in that tackle box.”

This is not to say that walleye don’t feed in places other than bottom – just never when I’m there.

With that in mind, the tried and true technique is bottom bouncing – and, although quite true, this is a sentence you should never repeat in a family restaurant.

Bottom bouncing – the act of dragging a lure across the bottom of a lake, is more than anything why walleye anglers have the

strongest arms of any anglers out there. It’s not just because their tackle boxes are loaded with weighted lures either, although, if you watch professional walleye anglers, you’ll see that they don’t lift their tackle boxes into the boat, they clean and jerk them.

Jig fishing is perhaps the best way to fish bottom. All you do is tie on a weighted jig head, tip it with your favourite soft plastic lure or live bait, and then cast to whatever part of bottom you suspect the walleye are hugging. It’s fairly simple.

From that point on, you let the jig sink, pause, raise your rod tip, reel in slack line, let the jig drop again and repeat until you’ve either brought it in to the boat, caught a fish or hooked a rock the size of Long Island. Somewhere along the way, probably three days later, you’ll learn that the jig colour you used wasn’t the one they were biting that

thing – we all get along very well – but there is a lot of competition. It’s the nature of the sport,” said Carter.

“If I have to face off against a teammate, I always bring my ‘A’ game. If I lose it’s not because he was better, it was because of my own mistakes.”

According to Carter the average snowboarder reaches their prime at age 24, which coincidentally will be the age he’ll be when the next winter Olympics occur.

“It’s a precision sport. You get better with age, you learn

the little techniques, the little tips how to read the snow and that’s a huge part of it, the years of experience.”

Carter has plans after his snowboarding career ends, he wants to give back to the community and work as a physiotherapist.

“Our team’s physiotherapist has made a big impact on my career,” said Carter. “Having that kind of support staff is incredible and I would like to see that side of the sport as well. Plus I would still be able to travel and snowboard all over the world.”

Trolling is similar. The only difference is that you catch the rocks, weeds, sticks and your prop at a rate of higher speed. And you learn that they were taking jigs that day.

Don’t get me wrong; there is a bad side of walleye fishing too.

Sometimes it can be slow. Or cold.

Or wet. Or miserable. Or dead.

And they are not exactly known for their fighting ability either.

Until they get to gargantuan size, most walleye are more than pleased to let you do all the work, winching them in.

So why do we fish for them at all?

Well, because no other fish can compare to them in taste.

Walleye are without a doubt the best eating fresh water fish we have.

They’re delicious. And they are plentiful and widespread and fun to catch once you get the hang of it.

Come to think of it, that’s the bottom line.

t’s a long way from Sao Paulo to Winnipeg, but music has no boundaries. For a young Larry McQuarrie just starting out with the guitar, the playing of Brazil’s Laurindo Almeida stuck, as did the nickname Laurindo.

More than four decades after picking up the instrument at the age of 10, the now-Stratford-based McQuarrie is releasing his first album. He’s marking that occasion with a series of concerts, Laurindo and Friends, including one tomorrow (Sunday) in Waterloo and next weekend in St. Jacobs.

The album, “Andalucía,” from the region in Spain, features 10 original tracks drawing on his longtime

love for jazz and Latin music. The concerts will include those songs plus a range of sounds, including nuvo-flamenco, Latin, Celtic, pop, gypsy and smooth jazz.

On stage, he’ll be joined by Chris Stahlke (violin, keyboards, bass, vocals), Ken Hadley (saxophone, flute, keyboards, guitar) and Tim Adair (drums, percussion).

“These guys are great musicians, multi-instrumentalists who really know how to put on a show,” said McQuarrie, noting audiences will be treated to a range of sounds. “I want to surprise people with what we can do.”

“My dad listened to jazz around the house, and I loved the sound,” he explained of where he got started.

Guitar lessons started at the age of 10, with the young McQuarrie shifting to classical guitar at 12. His musical education included a stint with the legendary Lenny Breau, who was known for blending many styles of music, including jazz, country, classical and flamenco guitar.

Some of that obviously rubbed off on his student.

As did the music of Laurindo Almeida, another musical pioneer noted for his classical Spanish guitar playing who scored several Grammy Awards for his

work in the 1950s and ‘60s.

More contemporarily, McQuarrie likens his sound to that of Jesse Cook.

“I like to say that if you like Jesse Cook, you’ll love Laurindo,” he laughed.

Given the variety of influences, you can expect a mix in the audiences for a Laurindo and Friends concert, but perhaps weighted towards Baby Boomers. Both upcoming shows are set for Sunday evenings with an early start: people can wind down listening to some good music and still get home at a reasonable time.

Having just finished up the “Andalucía” project, McQuarrie is eager to get in front of an audience. And to see the fruits of his long labour on the recording.

The Grand River Transit Bus Route 21 has been run as a pilot project by the Region of Waterloo for two years, and the Council of the Township of Woolwich would like to hear your feedback on what you think of having the GRT Route 21 bus service in the community.

The Council of the Township of Woolwich invites Engineering/Architectural Consultants interested in providing professional services for an analysis and evaluation of the Maryhill Fire Station in Maryhill, Ontario.

The goals of the Public Open House are to present information on the following: • history of Route 21 • route details • who uses the bus and when • what the bus service costs • planning, economic development, financial and community considerations • future plans and timing • next steps for the Township of Woolwich

Proponents will base their feasibility evaluation based on assessing present structural integrity and footprint of the existing structure. The evaluation will determine, based upon a cost benefit analysis, whether renovating the existing structure is appropriate and/ or determine if other solutions should be considered which may include replacement of the existing structure.

SEALED PROPOSALS will be received by the Director of Finance & Treasurer at the Finance Department, Main Floor, 24 Church Street West, Elmira, Ontario, N3B 2Z6, until 1:00 P.M. local time on Thursday June 16, 2011.

The easy understandability of these 10 is testament to their wide currency. Also remebered by Wayne’s chidren Karen and Mike Good, Christine and Tim Moser and Mark and Cathy Henrich, their children and his siter, Debra French and family. Predeceased by her parents Carl and Ethel (Ainsworth) Duench, infant brother Bruce and triplet sister Susan Ward. Pat served as secretary for many years at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Waterloo. She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church until she joined with Wayne at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. She enjoyed singing in each church and also in the Gloryland Chorus. Pat also enjoyed knitting.

Friends shared their memories of Pat with her family last Sunday, followed by interment in Union Cemetery, Elmira.
