The township has been running the centre since March, when the previous service provider opted to leave. Administrators subsequently issued a request for proposals to operate the facility, but on a different model – the original agreement saw Personal Best Health and Performance Inc. being paid $11,000 a month to run the facility since the opening of the Woolwich Memorial Centre in September 2009. Revenues failed to match expenses, and the centre lost $34,000 last year, adding to a variety of financial woes at the WMC.

P

arents dropping off their kids at Elmira’s John Mahood Publc School pose a safety threat, but measures aimed at reducing the risk shouldn’t penalize nearby residents, Woolwich council decided.

Presented this week with a plan to prohibit stopping on the north side of First Street across from the school, councillors rejected the idea while approving other changes to combat congestion. Instead of using the parking lot at the tennis courts,

drivers will be directed further along to the Gibson Park municipal lot, where the township hopes the Waterloo Region District School Board will share the costs for a second entrance to facilitate traffic flow.

The current no-stopping provisions – 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday – will remain in effect on the north side of First Street.

A growing student population and increase in the number of parents driving their kids to school have led to more safety concerns, clerk

Christine Broughton told councillors meeting June 28. Traffic congestion and parked cars near the school were to blame for an incident last October that saw a student cycling near the school struck by a car.

While the child was not seriously injured, the accident drew attention to the problem at John Mahood.

Subsequent enforcement measures, including ticketing and speaking to parents, proved ineffective, as many of those dropping of their kids simply continue as usual, she explained.

Mayor Todd Cowan noted the other changes are needed to address a situation that would only get worse as the school’s population grows along with the town’s.

Woolwich plans to spend about $3,000 to close off the west entrance to the tennis court parking lot and another $5,000 to open up another driveway entrance to the Gibson Park lot. If a cost-sharing arrangement with the school board can be agreed to quickly, the work could be done in time for the next school year.

But the three proposals the township received all proved unsatisfactory, director of recreation and facilities Larry Devitt reported to council this week.

All failed to guarantee a revenue stream.

Some good ideas were offered up, but all had unrealistic membership numbers, with a fair bit of work falling back on the township, he explained of the recommendation to turn down the proposals.

Since taking over the facility and eliminating the $11,000 monthly fees, the township has seen net revenue of more than $10,000, getting close to the $14,000 budgeted for all of 2011.

The township expected to save about $3,600

a month following the departure of Personal Best.

Devitt noted memberships are at their highest levels – 329 – since the WMC opened.

If the trend continues, the coffers will be in good shape – “that’s the critical number,” he said of memberships.

Coun. Mark Bauman, pointing out the stronger-than-expected net revenues, asked Devitt how running the fitness centre internally would compare to a straight rental agreement for the space.

Based on the current rate of $6 per square foot charged to other user groups, the 1,100-sq.-ft. facility would bring in $6,600, but then there would have to be provision for some $80,000 in equipment, said Devitt.

Lacking the resources to have someone on site on a regular basis, staff looked at ways to move traffic away from the school and reduce congestion.

The plan to prohibit stopping and parking on the north side of First Street met with resistance from neighbours, however.

Pavilion renamed in honour of tireless volunteer Jim Burton has spent more than two decades looking after recreation facilities in the village BRESLAU SAYS THANKS

The pavilion at Breslau Memorial Park has been renamed the Jim Burton Pavilion in honour of his 20 years of service to the community.

t Breslau Memorial Park the grass is cut, the baseball diamonds are ready and the beach volleyball courts are groomed all thanks to one man: Jim Burton.

Burton was honoured last weekend by the Breslau Recreation Association for his dedication to the park over the last 20 years. The pavilion in the park will be renamed the Jim Burton Pavilion.

“We thought we should really do something for him.

We tend to do things when people are leaving and this time we didn’t really want

to do that, we wanted to appreciate him and all the hard work he does,” said Lisa Nadon, the organization’s president.

Burton, who works for paving company Heat Design, spends all his spare time at the park.

“He puts in a lot of time.

He works a full-time job and afterwards he comes down to the park and works until the sun sets,” said Patty Burton, Jim’s wife. “He is here rain or shine. Without him, the ballpark would have died; I am happy that they are appreciative of all his hard work he is has done.”

Employed by the township to cut the grass, Burton does everything else on a volunteer basis, including dealing with the rentals of the park for tournaments in the summer and the disposal of the garbage that accumulates in the park over a weekend.

“He does this because he enjoys it, he is always involved in the community and he spends a lot of hours at this park,” said Nadon.

“He is always here either draining the fields, lining the baseball fields, or taking care of the soccer pitch – anything that has to be done at the park, he does it.”

Not one to be the centre of

attention, Burton was kept in the dark about the pavilion re-naming as his friends and families gathered in the park to celebrate his accomplishments at a surprise party.

“This is unbelievable, it’s beautiful,” said Burton. “I have always been a community guy, and since my kids were at the age where they were using the park a lot I have been here and seen a lot of changes over the years.”

“I have worked with people from all these organizations and being able to give back to them makes me really happy,” said Strauss. “I hope we see continued support from the (Legion) and we can make these kinds of donations every year. We are all here to work together and when we give these funds to organizations like the hospitals we know the money is

Peter Sweeney, president of the St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation, accepted the donation on behalf of the hospital, saying the funds will go to help the priority programs in particular the cardio program at St. Mary’s.

Writer and author Malcolm Gladwell – British-born but raised in Elmira – is among 50 notable Canadians who have been chosen to be inducted or promoted within the Order of Canada.

Gladwell joins comedian Eugene Levy, hockey star Hayley Wickenheiser and scientist and CBC radio host Bob McDonald, among others, on this year’s list. He is a staffer at the New Yorker magazine and has written several thought-provoking books, including The Tipping Point and Blink.

The Order of Canada is the pinnacle of the Canadian Honours System, and recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

Having overseen the recent capital building program, which included community centres in Maryhill and Breslau, a fire hall in Floradale, a new administration building and the Woolwich Memorial Centre, Devitt said he’s looking forward to turning over the reins to someone else while he enjoys a more relaxed pace.

Devitt joined the township staff Sept.

9, 1983, arriving from what was then the Town of Chesley, where he served as recreation director and arena manager.

Noting there will be many accolades coming as Devitt’s retirement date moves closer, Mayor Todd Cowan thanked Devitt for his “years of dedication to the township” in announcing the change at this week’s council meeting.

> More road work in the works Drivers in Elmira can brace themselves for another spate of paving-related detours, as Woolwich council this week approved a $371,000 tender for half-a-dozen projects to be completed this summer.

The contract awarded to Steed and Evans covers paving on Church Street West, Snyder Avenue South and Samuel Street and area. As well, there’ll be resurfacing on Pintail Drive and work to repair a drainage problem in the area of Arthur, Brubacher and Second streets.

The parking lot at the Woolwich Memorial Centre will also see more asphalt.

As the projects came in some $74,000 less than budgeted, the money allocated for the work will be returned to reserve funds for future projects.

Police nab record number of impaired drivers over weekend Colin Dewar

ast weekend broke a record. Not the usual heat record for a summer weekend, but for the highest number of impaired driver incidents this year.

From June 24 to June 27 Waterloo Regional Police investigated and responded to 16 occurrences of impaired driving.

“Our experience with impaired driving incidents in Waterloo Region demonstrates that too many motorists are still choosing to make unwise decisions; putting themselves and others at risk,” said chief Matt Torigian in a statement released Tuesday.

Police spokesman Olaf Heinzel said it was difficult to know if impaired driving has gone up or if the police have been more efficient reporting incidents.

“Sadly we have to consider the possibility

that there are impaired drivers out there who are not getting caught,” he said. “(The police) along with our partner agencies and road safety continually try to remind people through an educational process of the risks associated with impaired driving but also the legal implications for the driver who is caught.”

He went on to say that unfortunately not all motorists are listening to the message and in some cases they might be ignoring the message and choosing to make their own decisions about their actions.

Police were alerted to nine of the incidents as a result of calls from the community, six were the result of proactive vehicle stops and one was identified through the R.I.D.E. program.

“What we are finding and we believe is happening now is that with

the help of other agencies who are encouraging the public to become actively involved in reporting suspected impaired drivers maybe more people are starting to do that and are assisting our efforts.”

Police want the public to realize they are making a difference.

“Our hope is that as we head into a long weekend that people will continue to be vigilant and help with road safety,” said Heinzel. “We want them to realize that we do acknowledge the efforts that some of the people this past weekend made and who took the time and care enough to call the police and let them know.”

In addition to stationary and mobile R.I.D.E programs, police patrol officers are working proactively in neighbourhoods and continue to look for and stop drivers for impaired driving offences.

“A certain percentage of drivers are continuing to drive after drinking and that is just not acceptable to our community, and it’s not acceptable to the police and we want to drive those numbers down in terms of the number of actual people out there driving impaired,” said Heinzel.

Police encourage all motorists to make safety their top priority and only drive when sober.

“Plan ahead if you plan to drink and make arrangements for a designated driver, take public transportation or stay over. It’s a familiar message, but we need to reinforce the message and hope the public will be encouraged to work with police to improve road safety.”

Fire destroys workshop near Crosshill James Jackson

ellesley Township fire officials and the Ontario Fire Marshal continue to investigate the cause of an overnight fire at N.M. Manufacturing on Ayrshire Line near Crosshill.

No one was injured in the blaze that occurred early Thursday morning. Damages are expected to be in the range of $150,000 to $200,000.

Just after 12:30 a.m. fire crews from Lin-

wood and Wellesley responded to the fire, located in a pair of workshops on the property, with St. Clements called in for support shortly thereafter.

The fire destroyed a small workshop attached to the main manufacturing facility as well as most of its contents, including paint, lumber, a horsedrawn carriage and other equipment. The main manufacturing area only suffered minor smoke and water damage, township fire

chief Andrew Lillico said.

A barn attached to one of the buildings was also slightly damaged by the fire and contained two horses, which were removed to safety. The house on the property was not damaged during the incident and the occupants were evacuated safely.

Lillico said that it is still too early to determine the cause of the blaze or where it started, and that it would take another day to sift through the wreckage.

Kate’s Kause wins $25,000 in Keg promotion Voter support leads to sizable donation to fund for accessible playground in Elmira

little more than a week after her second birthday, Kate Meissner received an unforgettable gift from the Keg steakhouse through their “Thanks a Million” promotion.

On Wednesday, Kate – who turned two on June 21 – and her parents Kelly and Jeremy received a $25,000 cheque from the restaurant chain to go towards building an accessible playground in Elmira through their charity, Kate’s Kause.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Kelly before receiving the money at the Keg’s Waterloo location on Wednesday evening. “We’re only eight months in [to fundraising] and we’re already at $150,000 and the community has really rallied and some key donors have helped out as well.”

The Keg’s promotion was created to recognize the company’s 40th anniversary by distributing 40 grants of $25,000 each for community enhancement projects across Canada and the U.S. Kate was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome last summer, and people with AS, or

Kelly and her husband are both teachers at Bluevale Collegiate Institute in Waterloo and they encouraged their students to post a link to the contest on their Facebook pages and to ask their Facebook contacts to vote for Kate’s Kause.

Students at WCI and EDSS also took on the challenge, and word spread like wildfire.

Within a few days Kate’s Kause moved from third to first in the rankings.

Then, from May 16 to June 14 the public was allowed to vote online once a day for their favourite submission. A few days after voting had closed the Keg contacted the Meissners to tell them they had been selected.

“The essence of this was to give back to the communities who have

status and they started voting and said ‘How could we not vote? It’s so worthwhile, Kate is so beautiful.’ They all really wanted to see it happen for us,” said Kelly.

“When people reach out, they let you know that you’re not alone.

All these people supporting us has just made such a difference.”

The $25,000 from the Keg, in conjunction with $34,000 raised by local McDonald’s restaurant franchise owners during a golf tournament last week in Guelph, has pushed Kate’s Kause into the $150,000 range for fundraising, a tremendous feat in such a short amount of time.

Originally the Meissner’s believed that $150,000 would be enough to make their dream of a playground for kids with special needs a reality, but while crunching the numbers during the Keg application process, they realized that the special material to help Kate walk around the playground without her parent’s help was more expensive than they anticipated

Summer weather may be here in earnest James Jackson

W

ith the official arrival of summer on June 21 – and its unofficial arrival earlier this week with the last day of school throughout the region – it would seem that Mother Nature has finally begun to pay attention to the calendar.

After a particularly wet spring that saw the region come within four millimeters of the all-time record for precipitation, Environment Canada predicts a warmer-than-normal summer on the horizon.

Normal daytime temperatures for this time of year is about 25 degrees, and senior climatologist Dave Phillips said that this week the region touched

temperatures slightly above the, marking a good start to the summer season.

“Every [weather] model I’ve looked at, from the 10-day, to the 30-day and the 90-day, is showing the same pattern,” said Phillips.

“That is, warmer than normal.”

In terms of rain, given the amount of precipitation seen this spring it’s a given that most gardeners and farmers would like to see the sun for a while, but Phillips cautioned that even though it is notoriously difficult to predict rainfall throughout the summer – “it can be raining out your back door and not out your front,” he chuckled – he does

expect slightly wetter than normal conditions for the duration of the summer months.

Aside from packing your umbrella, Phillips also cautioned travellers to ensure they have a steady supply of sunscreen on hand. The hole in the ozone layer above the arctic has reached a record level this spring, he said, and that will translate into UV rays that are about three to five per cent stronger than normal.

The World Meteorological Organization reported in April that the atmosphere over the arctic lost some 40 per cent of its ozone between the beginning of winter and late March, caused by the release of manmade chloroflu-

orocarbons that were banned under the 1987 Montreal Protocol but still persist to this day.

Phillips said to wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, widebrimmed hats as well as long clothing to protect against the sun’s rays and to help protect against skin cancer. Despite the warnings, however, but he knows many people fail to heed the warnings which can lead to trouble down the road.

“People hear it, but then tune it out because there isn’t a clear and immediate pressing danger, but it is a danger in the longterm and I think people should practice safe sun because of the consequences.”

Four-way stop in works for Maryhill intersection Steve Kannon

he scene of several severe collisions, one of them fatal, in the last few years, a Maryhillarea intersection will see a host of new safety measures.

The intersection of Crowsfoot and Maryhill roads will become a four-way stop, with flashing lights and rumble strips installed to catch drivers’ attention. The changes were

approved by Woolwich councillors meeting June 28.

Previous improvements, including larger stop signs and rumble strips, on the Crowsfoot Road approach to the intersection were deemed insufficient following a fatal collision last October, said director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley in a report tabled Tuesday night. That collision occurred when a driver

stopped on a Crowsfoot approach, subsequently pulling out into the path of a vehicle travelling on Maryhill Road. The addition of an all-way stop means all drivers will have to come to a stop before proceeding through the intersection, reducing the risk and severity of collisions.

Rumble strips, pavement markings, stop bars and flashing signals will warn drivers

they’re approaching a four-way stop. An unbudgeted expense, the $13,500 cost will be covered by siphoning money from some other budget lines, pushing off that work until next year, councillors decided.

“You made the residents of Maryhill very happy, because that’s a very dangerous intersection,” said Coun. Bonnie Bryant of Kennaley’s recommendations.

hree Elmira residents opened the doors to their home last weekend along Snowgoose Crescent as part of a dedication to the new Snow Goose Apartments provided by the Elmira Developmental Support Corporation (EDSC) and the Elmira District Community Living (EDCL).

and allowed visitors to walk through their new apartments to explore the unique complex that utilizes a variety of support mechanisms to ensure a safe independent living experience for the residents.

to connections within and between social networks. It’s about helping others, using your resources to go beyond what you were originally incorporated to do.”

The abilities of the resident, coupled with natural community supports, friends and family provides a network of support said Bechard.

The EDSC offers two student scholarships through Renison College’s Faculty of Social Work at the University of Waterloo to provide a live-in social safety net.

In exchange for accommodation and an academic scholarship, the students will be good neighbours and available in an emergency situation.

“We are now helping educated the people who will be working in this service,” said Bechard. “While they

are living here they are actually doing the things they are learning about in the school and we have started to give back to the community.”

As the first recipients of the scholarship, Gabrielle Gauthier and Stacey Reinsma, have been living with the residents since September and have had their fair share of bumps on the road.

“It has been such a learning experience and a journey. It has become a real home but at first there were a few missteps and we had a lot of questions,” said Reinsma. ”But every time we would have a question there would be no answer because it had never been done before, so it has been a lot of back and forth; they have been very flexible negotiating what works for both of us and ev-

eryone in the house it is a lot more comfortable with each other and feels more like a home now.”

The students include the residents into their lives as much as possible and have developed strong relationships with them.

“They have all met our families and spent time with our boyfriends, who have developed their own unique friendships with the residents, it’s so much more than just our role to be social with them, it has rippled beyond what anyone expected,” said Gauthier. “We don’t keep anything separate from them, we include them in stuff we do and go out with them as much as we can, and it feels very genuine.”

EDSC set a mandate for the students to spend anywhere from 10 to 12 hours a week with the

residents, something no one keeps track of anymore as their lives become entwined.

“We don’t feel any pressure to spend time with them, we want to.

We all live in the same building and have created real friendships,” said Gauthier.

EDSC has been contacted by organizations from all over Ontario interested in the work they have done in Elmira and are teaching other communities how to replicate it in their community.

The organization has future plans for another property and is looking to expand their current model to include a nieghbourhood support system that involves other people in the community such as seniors or single mothers who can live in the home and be a support for the residents there.

During his time as parks and maintenance chair it has grown to include another ball diamond, soccer fields, tennis courts, volleyball courts and a children’s playground.

Burton has had a vision for the park for many years and is now beginning to see his hard work pay off.

“There are a lot of young people coming into Breslau now and small kids are using the playground, which is good to see. Breslau is a safe community where kids can still come to the park at a young age and feel

safe, their parents don’t have to worry about them.”

Burton hopes to see an arena built in the park over the next 10 years as the population of Breslau increases, but his first goal is to have a modern washroom facility built, as the current one is more than 50 years old and has only one toilet.

“There is still a lot to do. We may be a small community, but we have some big support in the community,” said Burton. “I have met a lot of good friends at this park over the years and I know I can count on any of them to help me out when I need it.

The pavilion will be used to host family reunions, community barbecues and the numerous tournaments through out the year.

“I just want him to know how appreciative we are of him. He takes immense pride in this park; people are always talking about how great he is, he loves the community, the park and wants to see people in the park, using it,” said Nadon.”

Township forced to deal with school/parent issue

I

n tackling traffic congestion issues around John Mahood Public School in Elmira, Woolwich is taking on a responsibility that really falls on the school board and, more pressingly, parents.

Rules that restrict to a brief period the arrival time of students lead to a concentration of parents and kids – and their cars – converging all at once. Lack of adequate infrastructure at the school means the long lineup of cars spill over onto municipal parking lots and streets.

But at a fundamental level the problem stems from parents driving their kids to school instead of letting them walk, cycle, board or use other alternatives, even when those choices would be faster, safer, better for the environment and for the health of their children. School officials know this, which is why

they encourage participation in programs such as International Walk to School (IWALK) month.

In Waterloo Region, we have the Active and Safe Routes to School program.

The benefits are clear. We all know we need to increase daily physical activity, improve the safety of our communities, reduce traffic congestion around schools, improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create communities where people choose to walk. Knowing is one thing. Putting it into action is another.

Debates are ongoing about the advisability of parents driving their children to school.

Increasingly, students who aren’t bussed travel to and from school in their parents’ cars, rather than walking or bicycling. While previous generations may not have

Concerned about obesity and falling fitness levels, authorities have been encouraging kids to walk, bike or blade to school. In Waterloo Region, the public health department promotes the practice, and planners pay more attention to safe school routes.

From an environmental perspective, every car trip avoided results in fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

And keeping the car away from schools is also much safer: accident statistics show school zones have become one of the most dangerous places in our communities. Families that would like to walk opt to take the car because they don’t want to become another pedestrian statistic.

We’ve become so dependent on driving to school that the ‘school run’ accounts for 25 to 30 per cent of morning rush hour trips.

In fact, it was a collision between a young cyclist and a car – not serious, thankfully – that prompted the latest round of enforcement by the township, which stepped up its efforts to find a solution, as addressed this week by Woolwich councillors.

The goal is to deal with congestion to increase the safety of kids going to and from school. But measures taken to date have not been effective, in part because some parents remain uncooperative, even heaping abuse on officials attempting to bring order to the drop-off area.

By moving cars to a larger lot, the township hopes to alleviate some of the congestion, but it will really take cooler heads and more foot power to make things better.

In politics, some people are closer to being indispensable T International he graveyards are full of indispensable men,” growled Charles de Gaulle, but French history would have been very different if he had died in 1940 (no Free French government, probably a Communist take-over attempt when France was liberated in 1944) or even in 1960 (no quick exit from Algeria, no Fifth Republic).

There are a few people whose absence would really make a difference.

Two such people seem to be hovering on the brink of death at the moment, though we have no trustworthy medical information about either one. In each case, their death could open the way to civil war. One is Thailand’s King Bhumibol; the other is Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez.

Bhumibol, now 83 years old, has been the king of Thailand since he was 21, and although he is a constitutional monarch his influence is allpervasive. It has, on the whole, been exercised in ways that promoted Thai independence, calmed domestic political quarrels, and supported the emergence of democracy. He has been the still centre at the heart of the storm for many decades, and he is revered by most Thais.

King Bhumibol has spent most of the past two years in hospital, and few Thais expect him to live much longer (although this is never discussed in public). When he goes, the crown will probably pass to somebody who takes sides in the ongoing battle between “red-shirts” and “yellow-shirts” that has divided Thailand, and has already caused many deaths, over the past few years.

GWYNNE DYER Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted by a military coup in 2006. Some 90 red-shirts, the mostly poor and rural supporters of Thaksin, were massacred by the army in a confrontation in central Bangkok last year, and the army may try yet again to reject a proThaksin election outcome.

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn was once close to Thaksin and probably still secretly supports him, but he is a playboy who is neither loved nor respected by the public. His mother, Queen Sikirit, sympathizes with the yellow-shirts, and is rumoured to be angling for the army’s support to make her regent when her (estranged) husband Bhumibol dies, rather than letting the crown prince have the throne.

If the two royals were to align themselves publicly with the opposing sides in a struggle for the throne after Bhumibol dies, they would substantially raise the probability that Thailand could stumble into a full-scale civil war.

Whereas if Bhumibol can hang on for another year the dispute may be settled at the ballot boxes, with the army grudgingly accepting a restoration of the normal democratic order.

He may not be utterly indispensable, but he is pretty important for Thailand right now.

And then there is Hugo Chavez. He is not exactly the “dictator” of Venezuela, as U.S. propaganda often calls him

(he has been elected a number of times in free elections), but certainly he is a “strongman” in the classic Latin American style. He comes from the army, he once led an attempted coup, and he is a full-time demagogue. The only difference is that he is a strongman of the left. And he may be dying.

The official story is that Chavez was in Cuba on June 9, in a private meeting with Fidel Castro, when he suddenly fell ill. Cuban doctors were called in, and immediately operated on him for a “pelvic abscess.” But he is still in hospital in Havana two weeks later, virtually incommunicado.

Chavez is an inveterate user of Twitter, but he has only tweeted once in all that time, to announce that his mother, his favourite daughter and his ex-wife had flown to Cuba to see him. He also reportedly telephoned a meeting of his ruling party’s senior leaders on Monday, but that may not be true. Venezuelans are speculating that his illness may be fatal, and the people close to Chavez are struggling to re-assure his supporters.

If Chavez does recover, he might lose the 2012 presidential election anyway.

He will have been in power for 14 years by then, and the mere passage of time has seriously eroded his power base.

He has improved the lives of the poor, but a government with an oil income of bazillions of dollars that cannot even produce enough electricity to keep the lights on is bound to lose popularity.

Should Chavez die now, however, there might not even be a 2012 election.

His elder brother Adán, the governor of the state of Barinas, reminded everybody that although the socialist

Freeform summers create best childhood memories A

s this paper makes its way to you, I’ll be enjoying the Canada Day weekend in Montreal. At this very moment, I might be sitting in the yard belonging to my longtime neighbours, taking in the view of the home where I spent my entire childhood. I’ll certainly be enjoying in the sights of that suburban neighbourhood, visiting with old friends, summer easily being the most nostalgic time.

I won’t have to go far to summon my childhood years. There are, of course, the neighbours’ homes: most of those people have moved away, but the houses remain.

There’s the recreation facility – playgrounds, pools, sports fields, community centre – just across the road. A small park out back where the poplar trees still stand despite many purloined branches fashioned into makeshift bows and arrows – not really a great choice of wood, in retrospect. A path that runs right behind the house, perfect for kids on foot and bikes.

Nearby, there’s a natural area – now shrinking due to development – where we’d pick wild berries, eating them on the spot. The wetlands provided toads and tadpoles.

Walking through those areas will bring back the pace of very casual, unstructured summers. Something I’ve not enjoyed for many years.

With school out this week, you’ll probably see kids placed into structured programs, such as day camps and bible schools. All-day recreational activities abound. Let’s hope, however, that there remain plenty of opportunities for kids to be kids, to enjoy what summer vacation is all about.

It seems to me many adults have forgotten the simple joy of pure, unvarnished fun that comes with being a kid in summertime. Plenty of time to do whatever you want … or nothing at all.

I know I’ve lost touch with the simple pleasures. Summer seems to slip by in an instant. As winter drags on, I can’t wait for the hot stuff to arrive. The next thing you know, it’s Labour Day, with all the downside that entails.

I love the heat of midsummer, but in some ways I dread its arrival. A warm May – not in the cards this year – elevates the spirits. June signals summer’s arrival. For some reason, however, I experience a twinge of regret when the calendar

flips to July, as it did this week. July is great, but it leads to August. And we know what comes next.

Undoubtedly, there’s some kind of psychological issue associated with anticipating the end of something even as it’s just getting underway.

Such thoughts never occurred to me when I was a kid. Time was different then. Not so fast. And each day was to be enjoyed, not filled with obligations. The weeks didn’t streak by as they do now.

When you’re a kid out having fun, the day can fly by. But the summer lasts forever. As adults, the day can drag on, particularly those hours between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. But the weeks and months are here and then gone.

As a kid, your summers are environmentally friendly and good for you, body and spirit.

Think about it, summers – at least as I knew them – were spent being active outdoors. At that time, we were literarily in touch with the earth – and we had the grass stains on our knees to prove it.

Lest I be accused of falling into the things-were-much-better-whenI-was-a-kid trap, I’m not alone in my assessment. There’s a bit of a movement to let kids be kids, to break out of the over-protective mode – see this week’s piece on the parking issues at John Mahood PS – and to stop micromanaging children’s

of power.

On the whole, then, it would be better if Chavez survived and came back to Venezuela, only to lose the election honestly next year. Like King Bhumibol, he is the indispensable man for the next little while.

After that, if all goes well, he can die whenever he wants.

Scottish-born Canadian writer Carl Honoré chronicles the worldwide phenomenon of childhood micromanagement in his book “Under Pressure: Rescuing Our Children from the Culture of HyperParenting,” in which he suggests we need to slow down, allowing kids to do their own thing.

“Childhood is always evolving and it has always been defined by adults.

But we seem to have reached a point now where childhood is being warped more than ever before by adult fantasies and fears, anxieties and agendas. Every aspect of childhood – education, safety, discipline, sports, play, etc – is now set up to suit grown-ups rather than children.

We are living in a culture that tells us that childhood is too precious to be left to children and children are too precious to be left alone,” he writes.

As children, my friends and I were usually left to our own devices, and we managed to do just fine, please and thank you. That’s not to say there’s no room for structure from time to time – if that’s what the kids want.

For the most part, there’s nothing wrong with letting them find their own ways: it will probably lead to the best memories when they get old enough to be nostalgic about their childhood.

ew Bauman and Tim Schneider are up to their knees in manure … and they love it.

The brothers-in-law own a company called Nincompoop.

“The name comes from, nitro g en-in-compostingpoop,” said Schneider. “Our slogan is ‘We want to poop in your garden.'”

The company sells a line of mulches designed to look like hemlock or cedar but with the benefits of feeding the soil instead of depleting the soil as most wood-based mulches do.

“Wood tends to wick nutrients and water out of the garden before it gives it back, which makes it nutrient zero. Whereas our product begins to feed your garden the moment you put it down,” Schneider explained.

The company came about when Schneider and his nephew, Andrew Schneider, were both off work on sick leave and were “licking their wounds,” when Andrew asked his uncle ‘how is it that your wife’s flowers are always the biggest on the block.’

“I showed him my secret concoction of horse and poultry manure and Andrew suggested we try to sell it,” said Schneider. "I thought ‘why not?' Ultimately we have all been dealing with horse s--t all our lives why not put it in a bag and sell it.”

With the help of Bauman, a dairy farmer, the three men began to experiment on Bauman’s farm looking for the right mix to sell.

Since manure can be very weedy, the three men came up with the right combination that is wood and weedfree and prevents other weeds from taking root as well.

“We guarantee no weeds

in our product, unlike other suppliers,” said Schneider.

“Most manure used is from bovine, which is the weediest and takes the longest to cure and is very wet, where as horse and poultry in the proper proportions has a lot more nutrients and fiber.”

With the help of the Waterloo Wellington Community Futures Development Corporation the men received a loan and began selling.

“Our biggest challenge is the moisture of the product, it has a shelf life of about two weeks before it gains an odor,” said Schneider. “When people see it they say hey it just looks like other mulch but when you think manure you think of the smell, but this doesn’t smell like manure, it has the smell of compost.”

Local food thrives with a stable farm economy

W

ith the summer patio-party season having finally arrived, I suspect Ontarians will be more interested in this week’s announcement that the provincial government is giving $12 million to farmers to torque up their production of top-quality wines, than the news that it’s also contributing significantly to a cherished insurance program against market ups and downs.

And I suppose that’s because wine is one of those products that consumers can so easily connect to the farm. The effects of the Ontario Vineyard Improvement Program, announced Tuesday, will be felt by anyone who buys wine bearing a Vintner’s Quality Alliance (VQA) logo. That means it’s the best domestic wine available, made with top-quality Canadian grapes and production practices that meets the highest standards.

To help bolster those standards and practices, the improvement program will help farmers transition their vineyards to more popular grape varieties, as well as offer support for irrigation systems, bird-netting, new equipment, measures to mitigate frost and cold damage, and consultation with viticulture experts.

The focus is quality. That’s clearly where the province – and the industry – thinks Ontario’s 146 grape wineries and 500 grape

That’s where the new insurance program comes in. Since 2007, farmers have been banging the drum for a program they could count on, one that features contributions from themselves, the province and Ottawa, and pays out when prices are low. They even took the unusual step of designing a program themselves and offering it to the two levels of government,

rather than waiting and hoping for a plan to be handed down.

Insurance is part of our culture.

Homeowners and other industries have it. Farmers too have insurance to protect themselves against weather, but no workable program has been available for market swings.

To great fanfare from farmers, the province agreed earlier this year to support the program long-term. It had got behind the initial prototype, liked what it saw, agreed that it was helpful to farmers, and announced its intention to become a partner. Earlier this week, it said farmers can start gearing up for the program this fall. The sector is still waiting for Ottawa to decide what it’s going to do. But meanwhile, food production must go on.

Wellington) gets it. “Ontarians have always been able to count on our farmers for the best food in the world,” he says. “In turn, Ontarians are supporting our farmers and ensuring renewed growth of our local rural economy.”

This is practical, not political.

Farmers need programs and policies such as this to stay profitable.

If they can’t make a decent living, they can’t produce food. Isn’t that obvious, especially now when everything is green and produce is starting to leap out of the ground?

They’ve survived a tough spring, and knock on wood, prices for most commodities are decent now.

If prices stay that way, they won’t need insurance pay-outs. The outlook is good – so now’s the time to get the insurance program in place and operational, which is exactly what they’re doing. Well done.

“Our concept is direct-to-application, we make it on the Monday to be used the following weekend, it’s a constant turnover,” said Schneider.

“A few nurseries in the area and in Greater Toronto jumped on it right away and began purchasing the

product.”

This season the company produced three new products: a lawn top dressing, an earth-soil blend and straight compost.

Nincompoop is managed out of Schneider’s Waterloo home and has a yard at a Maryhill farm. They recommend that customers call ahead to make an appointment if they plan to come to the farm.

Longtime John Mahood PS custodian Don Widmeyer heads into retirement Colin Dewar

T

he name Don Widmeyer may not be recognizable to you, unless of course you attended John Mahood Public School in the last 23 years.

Widmeyer, the school’s head custodian, is retiring after 30 years working for the Waterloo Region District School Board.

“I’ve see a lot faces pass through these hallways,” said Widmeyer. “It’s time to get out when you start seeing parents who used to go to the school and now they have kids here. That’s scary.

You wonder ‘has it really been that long?’ It doesn’t seem like it: 23 years here have gone pretty quick.”

In 1981 Widmeyer started working at St. Jacobs PS and moved to EDSS four years later. After three years at the high school he took a position at Mahood and made it his home until the end of this school year.

“I was young when I started. I had worked in the stockyards and I was pretty

rugged when I came out of there. I wasn’t cut out for this type of work really, but everything turned out well and I have enjoyed it,” he said. “I am looking forward to the retirement: 30 years in the same business is a long time. This is the longest I have held any job, but it just feels like the right time to step away.”

Widmeyer, who’ll turn 64 this month, has some big plans for his retirement.

“I am looking forward to taking care of my raised garden that I have at home.

I have two sons living out west with grandchildren and I am going to be spending a lot of time out there.”

He will also be working on a casual basis for the Waterloo Catholic District School Board as a custodian but will hold a special place for Mahood.

“Best part of this job is seeing all the kids enjoying themselves and making something out of themselves. Plus the staff that’s here, they make or break the kids and these teachers

are here for the kids – I have enjoyed seeing that for the last few years,” he said.

Watching quietly from the hallways, Widmeyer has noticed students face more challenges today than they did when he first started.

“Kids nowadays need more help academically and physically. I don’t know why this has happened but I’ve seen this change occur over the years, there needs to be more help for these kids who are struggling; someone needs to wake up and realize this, it’s not rocket science.”

The students and staff of Mahood held a surprise retirement party for their favorite custodian on June 24.

As Widmeyer entered the gymnasium the crowd inside erupted with thunderous cheers and applause while students banged hockey sticks against drums in appreciation of his hard work and acknowledging the mini-hockey league he organizes at the school.

Just a few years into his duties at Mahood, Wid-meyer noticed a group of children playing roughly outside during a recess period and decided to take action.

“They were just swearing, fight-ing and tearing around and as I watched them for a while I thought to myself there has to be a better way of doing this, so I started a hockey league and gathered the students together, organized them into teams and I refereed it,” he explained.

The Salsa Verde uses capers and anchovies – if these ingredients are new to you, give them a try. They simply add body and seasoning to the overall dish without at all tasting ‘fishy.’ Anchovy paste, in a tube, can be found refrigerated in grocery stores.

Ginger Scallion Sauce >>3 green onions, finely sliced

In a small pot, brown onions in a little canola oil over medium high heat; Add garlic and cook 2 minutes, stirring often; Add the brown sugar and stir until it is all melty and caramelized, about 2 minutes; Add bourbon, vinegar, ketchup,

>>Juice of one lemon

>>¼ cup maple syrup

During the retirement celebration students read out letters of thanks and classes stood and sang songs about Widmeyer, ending with a group of boys singing the Stompinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Tom classic, The Hockey Song. That may have brought a little tear to Widmeyer, but he was quick to wipe it away. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s such an important part of this community, he is just wonderful,â&#x20AC;? said Tait. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He is leaving some big shoes to fill.â&#x20AC;?

W

hen it comes to fivepin bowling, Karole McDonnell knows her way around a lane.

The 29-year-old Elmira resident was a member of the six-woman Ontario squad that captured the ladies’ division crown at the Canadian Open Fivepin Bowling Championships last month in Surrey and Langley B.C., defeating Team Alberta by a combined score of 1,300 to 1,130 in the gold-medal match.

It was the team’s third

straight national title, and McDonnell has been a valuable member of the team from the beginning.

“It’s been a different feeling,” she said of her three titles, noting that the team struggled to open the tournament back in 2009 when it was in Saskatoon, they were strong throughout the 2010 event in Winnipeg, but struggled again at the beginning of the most recent tournament, yet the team persevered and won all three times.

“It’s just something we do, I can’t explain it,” Mc-

Donnell said of the team.

The fact the team members all live relatively close together has certainly helped the team over the years develop strategy and a familiarity with one another.

Other members of the team include Casey Ramey and Kayla Smith of Brantford, Kayla-Marie Anderson of Six Nations, Christine Mair of Stratford and Kristi Lampman of Woodstock, whose father Andrew is the team’s coach.

“We’re a very tight group of girls,” McDonnell said with a smile.

To qualify as a member of the provincial team, players have to first compete in the zone qualifiers, consisting of a 20-game roll-off in December, with the top six bowlers chosen to represent the zone at the provincial championships held in Hamilton.

From there, the team proceeded to the national championships for the third straight year, which ran June 1-5.

While there, McDonnell had the highest average out of any of the bowlers in the ladies’ division with

a 275 for the tournament – four pins higher than her teammate Lampman’s 271 average – and was named a tournament all-star as well.

With another title under her belt, McDonnell will continue to practice in preparation for National Sports Day in Canada, slated for Sept. 17 in Calgary, in which five-pin bowling has recently been accepted as an official sport. McDonnell will be on a mixed team drawn from the top bowlers

Putting reason to use, weather or not it’s applicable T

here’s an old saying that goes, “If you don’t like the weather around here, just wait five minutes.” And that was the way things sort of went on the opening weekend of bass season – except maybe that you had to wait two minutes, rather than the standard five. In fact, it was as unpredictable as Britney Spears left unattended in a hair salon.

There were times when it was cold and rainy. There were times when it was cold and windy. There were times when it rained and was cold and windy. There were times when it looked like it was going to snow.

This, of course, was exactly what I expected – my best friend Tom was visiting.

Tom is one of those guys who I fish and hunt with about five or six times a year. He’s my best buddy and bad weather follows him like a dog follows a bacon truck.

We’ve fished and hunted together in blizzards, searing heat,

Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve Galea pouring rain and near-hurricane conditions – and that was just on one day last July. On the bad days, it’s much worse.

I’ve told this to other people and they just think that I’m exaggerating or making things up. That is, until they spend any time outdoors with Tom. That’s when they get their eyes opened.

When I told this to my partner, she – having not yet had the pleasure of fishing with Tom – was doubtful.

“It’s not possible for one man to influence the weather just by visiting an area,” Jenn said, in that unreasonable, intellectual way.

“Oh yes it is,” I answered. “You weren’t there when we visited

Nakina and it snowed in early September.”

“Hold it,” she said. “The weather up there is always unpredictable.”

I went on to explain that we visited there to hunt grouse only to hear that they had the coldest, wettest spring on record, which essentially meant that the area was devoid of grouse when we arrived.

Was it a coincidence that Tom booked the trip early in that spring? Some naïve people might believe this. Not me – I just happen to think he gave Mother Nature advanced notice.

“Do you need further proof ?” I asked.

“That wasn’t any proof at all,” she said stubbornly.

“OK,” I said, “the area he calls home consistently gets whiteouts and record snowfalls.”

“Of course it does. He lives in the snow belt,” she replied.

“It’s only the snow belt because

he lives there,” I said. “If he moved to Florida it would become the snowbelt.”

But Jenn, who is a logical, intelligent and rational person, would have none of this. So, she sat me down and provided a bundle of very plausible arguments why all of this was strictly coincidental.

She pointed to the cold, windy and sometimes rainy conditions outside and then suggested that all this had to do with cold fronts, high and low pressure systems, Arctic air currents, the seasonal positions of the sun and a thousand other more germane, explicable factors. Her arguments, in fact, were unassailable.

And, of course, she was right.

The weather does come and go as it pleases, according to a host of complex factors. So I was forced to agree that no one man can influence how things turn out.

On a side note, the sun showed up as soon as Tom pulled out of the driveway.

The 6’2”, 200-pound defender was originally selected by the Rangers in the 13th round of last year’s OHL Priority Draft (258th overall) before spending the season with the Kings.

“Cory is a big, stay-at-home defenceman that also has an edge in his game,” said Rangers head scout Murray Hiebert. “He has the ability to clear the zone in front of the net and is a great penalty killer.”

The proposal for the Woolwich Bio-En Inc. renewable energy project has been posted on the environmental registry referred to in section 5 of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993. Comments in respect of the proposal may be submitted to the Director of O. Reg 521/10, s.7.

Project Description: Pursuant to the Act and Regulation, the facility, in respect of which the project is to be engaged in, is considered to be a Class 3 Anaerobic Digestion Facility that processes organic material using anaerobic digestion to produce biogas which will be combusted to generate electricity and heat. If approved, the facility will generate 2.85 MW of electricity and 3.02 MW of heat from the biogas. The project location is shown in the map and is to be located on lands that are zoned as industrial.

The proposed facility will include two buildings, one for operations and one for processing. The operations building will house the reciprocating engines and other equipment to perform facility operations and control. The process building will receive organic materials and will contain equipment to prepare and blend the organic material prior to being fed into the anaerobic digestion equipment. The facility will receive and process no more than 70,000 tonnes/year of organic material.

The facility has been designed with emissions control equipment to mitigate the potential emission of air contaminants and odour from activities including: organic unloading, processing, and digestate loading.

hen it comes to the three Rs, children can forget much of what they have learned throughout the year during the short summer break.

That is one of the reasons why TD Bank partnered with libraries across the country to create Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest summer reading club for kids to help encourage students to read during their holidays and to build on the skills they learned at school.

Registration starts July 5 in Elmira for the 16th annual TD Summer Reading Club, and the program is already underway in some of the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s other libraries, with more than 150 registered in Wellesley already. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Anybody who comes and reads all summer, it keeps their reading skills up,â&#x20AC;? explained Bette Cummings, assistant library supervisor in the juvenile section of the Elmira branch of the Region of Waterloo Library. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Teachers tell me it takes almost until December to get their skills back up to where they left off in June, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a huge impact.â&#x20AC;?

For each book a student reads, they receive a stamp on a progress sheet, and anyone who reads nine or more books will get a certificate at the summer reading club party at the end of the summer.

But letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face facts â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a lot of kids would rather be out having fun in the sun than reading a book inside the library, which is why every year libraries across Canada vote on a different theme to help make the reading and the learning more fun for chil-

From crafts and reptile shows, to fables and fairytales, pirates and playground visits, there is certainly something to please everyone at the library this summer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Parents have told us that the program has helped their children who were considered non-readers, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s encouraged them to become avid readers,â&#x20AC;? said summer student and activity coordinator Janine Stamper. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We try to make it really fun and interactive. In 2009 the Region of Waterloo library saw more than 1,400 kids come through their doors for the summer reading program, and in 2010 when the theme was “Destination Jungle” that increased to

about 1,500, and Stamper said that they are expecting about the same number this year, proving that the program is popular among both students and parents.

“We’ve had lots of success stories about reluctant readers or families who have never come to the library before become life-long readers,” said Stamper. “We try not to focus on what they can’t do but what they can do.”

When you’re able to get away with calling it “terminological inexactitude,” as did Winston Churchill when he coined the phrase and warned fellow Parliamentarians about its risk, says Ralph Keyes in Euphemania.

In time, his phrase became a popular euphemism for “a lie.” Some years later, Britain’s Cabinet Secretary Sir Robert Armstrong created an uproar by admitting he’d been “economical with the truth” when testifying in a court case.

Men in particular try to avoid giving other men the opportunity to say, “You callin’ me a liar?,” which can get fists flying -- or worse. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term “liar” is “normally a violent expression of moral reprobation, which in polite conversation tends to be avoided.”

Little wonder there’s such a demand for euphemisms and so many to choose from. Rather than accepting lying as a fact of life, we “manipulate” notions of truth, or “massage” the

truth, or “sweeten it.” “Credibility gap” and “humbug” are golden oldies, as are “stonewall,” “trim,” “whitewash.” Lies can be “factually flexible fictions,” “alternative realities,” “untruths.” A liar can be someone who is “in denial,” or suffering from “fictitious disorder syndrome,” or as one psychiatrist put it, “A liar is someone for whom truth is temporarily unavailable.”

Who invented the cellphone and when and where?

Martin Cooper, then an engineer at Motorola, invented the first hand-held cellphone in 1973, says “ScienceIllustrated.Com” magazine. The model weighed over two pounds and had many thousands of component parts squeezed in. (As late as 1983, a portable hand-held phone cost about $4,000.) Standing on a Manhattan

sidewalk, Cooper placed his first call to his rival, Joel Engel, whose team was also trying to invent a mobile phone for Bell Labs.

“As I walked down the street talking on the phone,” he remarked, “sophisticated New Yorkers gaped at the sight of someone actually moving around while making a phone call. Remember that in 1973, there weren’t cordless telephones, let alone cellular phones. After WWII, Yeager volunteered to find out what would happen if a plane flew faster than sound (known as Mach 1), says Shawn Connolly in The Book of Potentially Catastrophic Science. Would it hit an “air wall” and

be smashed into smithereens? Would some outer limit of human endurance be reached, causing eardrums to burst and brains to turn literally to mush?

Two days before the flight, Yeager broke two ribs in a horse fall, but afraid of a cancellation, told no one about his injury. So on Oct. 14, 1947, in the skies above California’s Mojave Desert, he boarded a B-29 bomber with the Bell X-1 rocket plane affixed underneath. At 20,000 feet the X-1 was released, which Yeager took to 45,000 feet before stepping up its speed.

When it exceeded 670 mph -- the speed of sound at that altitude -- people on the ground miles below heard the loud boom predicted by scientists.

Yeager brought the plane down smoothly. Afterward, a second generation X-1 was developed capable of Mach 2; by 1955, planes were flying at Mach 3. At Mach 4, however, the fuselage gets too hot for a pilot to control, says Connolly, “with the potential for catastrophe extremely high.”
