Wellesley girl wins top showperson prize in Stratford

In an effort to raise funds for the volunteer fire departments of Woolwich, St. Jacobs Place Retirement Residence will be hosting Summer Fest July 20 at 10 Water St. in St. Jacobs. Some 10 local vendors will be there selling their products and giving away free prizes; free buggy rides are available courtesy of Fairway Lumber; and there will be a free barbecue and entertainment ranging from musical acts to clowns for the kids.

“Some of the staff here have had close friends impacted by fires, so this is just to show our appreciation for the volunteer fire fighters here in Woolwich and as a way to give back to the community,” said Marlen Boisvenue, executive director of St. Jacobs Place.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Boisvenue expects some 1,000 people to attend.

he third time really is the charm for Michelle Albrecht.

The member of Waterloo senior 4-H dairy club was named the top intermediate showperson at the 2011 Gencor Challenge West on July 7-8 at the Stratford Rotary Complex in her third year of competition at the event.

Albrecht, who just turned 17 on Sunday, said it was one of the best early birthday presents she could have asked for.

“Oh, it was very exciting.

When I won I didn’t really know what had happened

and tears came to my eyes,” she said, “but it’s really hitting me now after I’ve had a chance to think about it.”

In showmanship classes the judges are mainly interested in how the showperson responds in the ring and how they best show off their animal to the judge. Elements such as feet and head placement for the calf – as well as body language and ring awareness by the showperson – are all taken into effect when deciding a winner.

For John Drummond, senior dairy 4-H leader for Waterloo Region, the judges couldn’t have chosen a more

deserving pair than Albrecht and her one-year-old Holstein heifer named Bertha.

“She’s a wonderful girl, a wonderful showperson and had a great showing,” he said of Albrecht, adding that she is always “calm, cool and collected” when it’s time to step in the show ring.

Nearly 200 other 4-H members from across the region competed in the two-day show, which also encompassed conformation and educational aspects, and Albrecht said she enjoys the feeling of larger competitions such as the Gencor Challenge.

“It’s probably one of my favourite shows, it’s kind of like the Royal to me,” she said, referring to the worldfamous Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.

“It pushes me to work with my calf more and to strive to be a little bit better.”

For the Albrecht family, whose farm is just outside of Wellesley, showing seems to run in the family. Michelle’s older sister, Melissa, took home the grand champion showperson title back in 2009.

“I love shows and just the people there. It’s a great experience and you get to meet new people and it’s a lot of fun.”

onrad Grebel University College at the University of Waterloo is introducing a new summer camp that combines fun in the sun with a social justice twist. The firstever Peace Camp is aimed at youths aged 11 to14.

The purpose of the camp is to spend five days helping young people understand

how to practically make a difference in their communities.

Each day the camp will provide two guest speakers to come and interact with the students by using drama, arts, crafts and music. The guest speakers will share a little about what they are doing to make a difference in the world.

The speakers range from young people involved in the

community to actors, mediators, a holocaust survivor and number of artists, all will be talking to the students about the causes they are involved in, the skills that the students need to approach different action projects and how to engage with the world.

“It is really just about connecting the kids to different parts of the community and

understanding that peace can be approached in many different ways,” said Devon Spier, Peace Camp coordinator.

Spiers admits they are not going to save the world in five days, but the camp is an opportunity for students to connect with people and organizations outside their everyday lives.

> Display sees food as a human right Nineteen visual artists from Canada and around the world add their voices to a growing number of people connecting the right to food with a faithbased response to hunger in an exhibit that opens officially July 21 at Conrad Grebel University College in Waterloo.

The exhibit is a project of the Mennonite Committee on Human Rights, based in Winnipeg and has been showing at various venues in Manitoba.

This is the first time that it will be in Ontario. It will be at Conrad Grebel through the end of September and then move on to Toronto and Hamilton.

The show will be open to the public Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the main atrium and adjacent hallways at Conrad Grebel, 140 Westmount Rd. N., Waterloo.

> TVs banned from region landfill sites The Region of Waterloo has added televisions to the list of electronic waste (e-waste) items banned from the landfill. As of Aug. 1, televisions will no longer be accepted with curbside garbage collection.

Computers, monitors, stereo equipment and other e-waste have been banned from the landfill and not accepted with curbside garbage collection since 2005. The region has successfully diverted more than 800 tonnes of e-waste for recycling through this program, keeping tonnes of potentially hazardous materials and valuable metals out of the landfill.

Two injured in Breslau collision between car, truck involving a 1996 Chevrolet SUV and a horse-drawn buggy occurred on Lobsinger Line in Wellesley Township. The horse was spooked, causing the buggy to hit the SUV. Damages to the SUV include a smashed window and a dent in the door.

No charges were laid.

The man answered an ad on vactiontimessharerental.com for a rental unit in Florida. He sent a down-payment in U.S. funds. The money order was cashed in Pennsylvania and no further correspondence has occurred between the company and the St. Jacobs man.

advised of a woman trying to use a credit card that did not match her identification at post offices in St. Jacob and Elmira. The woman is described as 5’4”, slim build with bleached-blonde hair and a Polish accent. Police are still investigating.

> Collision closes Nafziger A 19-year-old New Hamburg man was charged with ‘careless driving’ following a single-vehicle collision about 8:50 p.m. Wednesday night on Nafzinger Road, south of the Village of Wellesley.

The driver lost control of his car, subsequently rolling it into a field. As a result, two of the four teenage occupants had to be transported to hospital by paramedics with undetermined injuries.

Waterloo Regional Police closed Nafziger Road for two hours to complete the onscene investigation.

July 11 reported a credit card fraud. Her President’s Choice MasterCard was duplicated and charges were made in multiple locations, including the United States. MasterCard is currently investigating the fraudulent charges and the woman from Wellesley will not incur any new charges on the card.

woman was charged with ‘careless driving’ after she drove her Mustang into a ditch along Reid Woods Drive. No injuries were reported.

to an industrial accident at a location on St. Charles Street in Maryhill. A male worker was taken to a Guelph hospital after he swallowed NU-Brite degreaser while trying to siphon the degreaser from one tank to another.

reported a scam on Kijiji. The woman is selling a vehicle on the site and was contacted by someone in the United Kingdom asking her to send them $1,700 for shipping costs and they would then pay her in full for the car.

July 13 > 7:46 AM | | A farmer contacted police after finding 11 marijuana plants in his hay field on Lobsinger Line in Woolwich Township. Police destroyed the plants.

Local actors put some magic into opening of Harry Potter film Colin Dewar

izards and muggles gathered this week to watch the curtain rise on the final installment of the Harry Potter series.

The epic finale to the highest-earning movie franchise in Hollywood history, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, began screenings as early as Tuesday.

Fans across the world have eagerly antici-

pated the last chapter, many of them showing their support by dressing up as their favorite character from the series.

At the new Empire Theatre in Waterloo their was a little more than just movie magic happening on the screen when the movie opened July 15.

DJ Carroll, the drama teacher at EDSS, and a group of young actors prepared a promotional event at the

theatre, dressing up as characters from the film and interacting with the audience.

“We are going as characters from the films including wizards and students and will have interactive games for the audience to participate in, including a wizard duel where they have to out draw one of our wizards by getting their wand out faster,” Carroll said Wednesday.

The film is being

shown in 3D, prompting Carroll and his troupe of wizards to hand out limited edition 3D glasses to audience members who participate in the Harry Potter trivia contest.

The interactive promotion has moviegoers getting up close and personal with a death eater, a dark character from the film series who is commanded by Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter’s main nemesis.

Audience members looking for more heroic characters will be pleased to see members of the Order of the Phoenix, the force aligned against Voldemort.

“It’s a lot of fun, people really get a kick out of the show we do for them,” said Carroll.

A few of the actors are also practicing magicians and will be performing tricks for audience members in the lobby of the theatre.

“People love it; it’s just another level of experience and adds to the whole event of going to the theatre – people really get into it,” said Carroll. “For this show we plan to teach a few magic tricks as well as long as the participants swear to never reveal the trick to anyone.”

“The possibilities for peace are endless when youth have a stake in the future of their world; indeed, childlike qualities such as creativity, understanding, and sharing are the cornerstones of what humans need to get along and live amicably with each other.”

Spier and her staff will work with the students to engage in collaborative peace games while exploring issues affecting communities around the world. The camp’s goal is to bringing together a diversity of youth to learn strategies for justice and peace through recreation programming.

“We are hoping to draw some connections and help youth realize that they have a part to play whether they want to be a scientist

or a volunteer overseas or work in their faith community, it’s about building relationships,” she said.

The camp will not be holding lectures in the classic school formula.

Guest speakers will be very interactive with the students and will participate in recreational games.

“We are using typical recreation, like volleyball, basketball and Frisbee, and are changing the games a bit to teach youth about what it says about conflict and how we interact with each other,” said Spiers.

The summer session of Peace Camp runs Aug. 8-12. Full-day (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and halfday (9 a.m. to noon) options are available.

Media issues go well beyond Rupert Murdoch

T

he News of the World scandal, perhaps just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, has cast a light on the media, particularly large, corporate media.

Many people are taking great delight in watching billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch squirm.

For British politicians, who’ve long sought his blessing and feared his reprisals, it’s payback time: there’s blood in the water and it’s their turn to be the shark.

For those opposed to media being under the control of a shrinking number of owners, there’s delight in the thought this could see News Corp. unravel.

And there are those who find unseemly what Murdoch has done to the media, saying his holdings, such as Fox News, dumb down content and promote his corporate ideology.

They would love to see him take a hit.

Whatever the personal feelings about Murdoch, anything that would lead to a breaking up of his holdings would be an improvement, as the media has increasingly become a business, as opposed to a check on power and privilege.

Recent years have seen an accelerated trend towards increased concentration of ownership, and the resultant loss of distinctive voices.

We’ve seen moves that put newspapers, television and radio stations and internet companies under one umbrella (Bell Media, for instance).

Commonsense says most of these changes have not been for the better – if the quality of these mega-chain’s offerings were improving, audiences could consider themselves well served. A uniformity has been seeping into the media in recent years, but it used to be separated by genre.

Closer to home, many of the local newspapers have been part of the changes sweeping through the industry. First came a wave of ownership changes and, now, closures, mergers and layoffs.

Are we being well served? Ultimately, despite all the self-indulgent media speculation, the decision lies with you, the reader/viewer/listener/surfer. Studies over the years suggest such concentration will only serve to erode the quality of the media offerings. This is especially troubling as it relates to the media’s traditional role as watchdog over political and business self-interest.

established role of the media as the public watchdog, despite allegations of muckraking from those under investigation and, in an increasingly cynical world, from the public itself.

High on the agenda right now are the actions of a new and unproven federal government, one that many Canadians eyeball suspiciously.

Often accused of relishing the negative (most commonly from those under examination), the media best serve the public when they challenge leaders on their actions, positions and statements. Yes, we also tell people stories about themselves and do our part to entertain, but the watchdog role is the cornerstone of the free press in a democratic system. ‘Why?’ is a perfectly valid question. Those who would make decisions that affect our lives must justify themselves – arbitrary actions are not acceptable.

Deciding what will become of Sudan

T

he flags have been waved, the anthem has been sung, and the new currency will be in circulation next week: the Republic of South Sudan has been launched, and is off to who knows where? Perdition, probably, for it is a “pre-failed state,” condemned by its extreme poverty, 15 per cent literacy and bitter ethnic rivalries to more decades of violence and misery.

But what about the country it leaves behind?

It’s telling that there is a South Sudan, but no North Sudan. What’s left is still just Sudan. It’s still the second-biggest country in Africa, and it still has four-fifths of the people it had before the south broke away. But it has lost a big chunk of its income: almost three-quarters of the old united country’s oil was in the south. It’s also an Arab country run by a dictator who has been in power for 22 years. So we know what comes next, don’t we?

The dictator, President Omar alBashir, is unquestionably a bad man.

He seized power in a military coup in 1989, and he is the first serving head of state to be indicted by the International Criminal Court. In 2009, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Bashir for war crimes and crimes against humanity in his conduct of the war in the rebellious province of Darfur.

It added three counts of genocide last year. But he’s not all bad.

He inherited a much bigger war, between the predominantly Muslim north of the country and what is now South Sudan. It was a squalid, dreadful affair that killed about two million southerners and drove another four million – about half the southern population – from their homes. Bashir has a lot of blood on his hands. But he eventually realized that the south

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER could not be held by force, and he had the wisdom and courage to act on his insight.

In 2005 he ended the fighting by agreeing that the two parts of the country would be run by separate governments for six years, after which the south would hold a referendum on independence. He knew that the south would say “yes” overwhelmingly – in the end, 98.83 per cent of southern Sudanese voted to have their own country – yet he never reneged on the deal.

“President Bashir and (his) National Congress Party deserve a reward,” said Salva Kiir, now the president of South Sudan, after the votes were counted in February. And Bashir said: “We will come and congratulate and celebrate with you. ...We will not hold a mourning tent.” His decision made him very vulnerable politically in the north, but he stuck to it for all these years, and as a result many tens of thousands of people who would have died are still alive.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that north-south relations will be smooth after the South’s independence. Most of the oil is in South Sudan, but the new country is landlocked: the oil can only be exported through pipelines that cross Sudan proper to reach the Red Sea. Yet there is not a deal on revenue-sharing yet, nor even on the border between the two countries.

The dispute over the province of Abyei flared into open fighting be-

tween northern and southern forces last week, although there is now an agreement to bring in an Ethiopian peacekeeping force. There is no agreement, however, on the referendum that was promised for the province but never held.

Abyei’s permanent population is mostly Dinka Ngok, who are Christian or animist by religion and “southern” in their loyalty. The north, however, insists that the Misseriya, Arabicspeaking Muslim nomads who bring their herds of cattle into Abyei to graze during the dry season, also have the right to vote in the referendum.

Deadlock.

Such ethnic quarrels will persist and proliferate: at least five rebel groups are fighting the new southern government, and Bashir’s regime faces big rebellions in Darfur, South Kordofan and Nile Province. South Sudan will almost certainly end up as a one-party state that spends most of its revenue on the army – “the next Eritrea,” as one diplomat put it – but the future of Sudan itself is harder to foretell.

Bashir’s immediate problem is economic. The deal to split the oil revenue equally between north and south lapsed with South Sudan’s independence, and he is bringing in harsh austerity measures and a new currency as part of a three-year “emergency program” to stabilize the economy. But the price of food is already soaring in Khartoum as confidence in the Sudanese pound collapses.

Unaffordable food was a major factor in the popular revolts against oppressive Arab regimes in recent months, and Bashir is trying to insulate himself against that by promising

Decades in, internet spam and scams abound T

his was a particularly bad week for my U.S. and overseas bank accounts. Apparently a slate of server upgrades, unauthorized attempts at access and security breaches put my accounts at risk.

Far from worrying, however, I simply took the news in stride: I don’t have a host of U.S. and overseas bank accounts. In that light, therefore, I did not feel compelled to email complete strangers all the personal information they insisted was needed to protect my holdings.

If you have an email account, chances are you’ve seen this and similar kinds of spam. The goal is to get you to provide names, passwords and credit card information the scammers – known as phishers – will later use to steal your money.

Phishing scams abound, but aren’t as numerous as the chain letters, which seem to ebb and flow these days.

You know the kind: the virus-thatwill-blow-up-your-computer warnings, the sick-kid’s-dying-wish, the what’severyone’s-birthday list, and so on.

Typically, these messages exhort you, the reader, to pass them along to five or 10 friends, promising some form of good luck if you do so, and threatening some ill omen if you don’t. As I routinely delete these messages and have yet to be struck by lightning or the like, I have to believe the threats are empty. On the other hand, having never passed such messages along, I can’t say for sure that good luck wouldn’t come of the practice. I am, however, content to stay the course.

Most are fairly harmless, in that they’re not directly scams, though some begin circulating simply to harvest names for mailing lists: more spam will follow.

Some, however, are clearly pyramid schemes. The classic example of this is what’s known as the Dave Rhodes chain letter, a long-

You’ve probably seen a variation of this one: “My name is Dave Rhodes. In September 1988 my car was repossessed and the bill collectors were hounding me like you wouldn’t believe. I was laid off and my unemployment checks had run out. The only escape I had from the pressure of failure was my computer and my modem. I longed to turn my avocation into my vocation. This January 1989 my family and I went on a ten day cruise to the tropics. I bought a Lincoln Town Car for CASH in February 1989.”

The e-mail then talks about how this is not a scam, that it really works and that it’s perfectly legal.

Wrong on all three counts, but there’s a sucker born every minute.

Later, the post details how you’re going to make a fortune in a matter of weeks by investing just $5.

The gambit involves sending $1 to each of the first five names on the list provided. You then insert your name and address in the first spot, bumping the others down accordingly, and then begin spamming others with this message.

In time, envelopes containing cash ($1) will begin arriving at your door.

You’re on your way to Easy Street.

Or are you?

Not likely.

Like all pyramid schemes – all of these chain letters are pyramid schemes, but not necessarily for financial gain – this one will eventually leave at least 90 per cent of the participants high and dry, even under the best-case scenario of unanimous participation.

That may win him some support among the Muslim, Arabicspeaking majority, but by the same token it will further alienate the north’s remaining religious and ethnic minorities. On top of all that, Bashir will

forever be seen, however unfairly, as the man who “lost” the south. His status as an indicted war criminal does him no harm with the majority population at home; his failure to crush the southerners by force is what really undermines him. So he may soon have to go abroad and live with his money.

He did one good thing in his life, and no good deed goes unpunished.

It’s all about the math, as explained by the Rutgers University computer science department, which maintains a list of such things.

“The reason people are even tempted by these schemes is that the human mind does not have an intuitive view of geometrical progressions. Suppose we presume the chain letter to have a list of five people. You are asked to send one postcard to the person on top of the list, and re-mail the letter to five friends. You are promised thousands of postcards from all over the world if everyone participates. Your cost: a postcard, five photocopies and envelopes, and six stamps. Not much to risk to see what comes back ...”

If everyone on the list participates and makes five copies, you are one of 5x5x5x5 or 3,125 people receiving copies in your “generation” of the letter. So far, the numbers don’t seem outlandish. And looking the other way, you stand to get postcards from 3,125 people. That doesn’t seem impossible either. But view it as the “chain” you’re in the middle of, and there will be 5 to the 11th power or 48,828,125 people receiving copies in that generation of the letter. That’s already more than the population of Canada, and would surpass the

population of the U.S. in the next generation.

Simply put, there aren’t enough people to keep even the most innocuous chain letter going.

So, why do we perpetuate chain letters at all? Each one you receive came from somebody, after all.

An Ohio university psychology course looked to determine just that.

“One reason is that it is a great source for obtaining new e-mail addresses. These addresses may lead to new contacts.

“Some people send chain letters simply to see how far it will go or to harass another person. There may be times when someone decided that they want to damage a person’s or organization’s reputation.”

The originators are one thing, but when we pass along these letters, we’re chewing up Internet bandwidth (again, it’s about the exponential power). Quite simply, many of us perpetuate these e-mails because of superstition – we don’t want to risk bad luck – or wishful thinking about the benefits that will come from the good luck we’ve been promised by passing the message along.

In reality, you’ll be doing yourself and everybody else down the line a favour by simply hitting the Del key.

Got complaints? Be part of the solution To the Editor,  Re: “Soccer league could use improvements,” (Observer, July 9/11).

First off, I am bothered by the fact that the Observer would publish an anonymous letter to the editor.

If the author of the letter has a problem with an organization be a grown up about it and put your name on your letter. Anonymous complaints are nearly impossible to understand within context and to address.

Woolwich Youth Soccer is a small organization serving a very large and diverse geographic area. While I would agree that improvements to the league are required, I disagree with the way the author is trying to make them happen. Has the author made any efforts to approach WYS? Is the author a former volunteer that didn’t get a thank-you? If not then they have very little right

to complain anonymously.

If you want change in the league, volunteer to be part of the WYS. If you have solutions to these problems I am sure the WYS would like to hear them.

There are many people within the WYS organization who devote large amounts of time into this league because of lack of parental involvement. These people should be commended for their dedication, which provides a place for hundreds of young players in Woolwich to enjoy the game. In my experience it is difficult to get even one out of 10 parents to coach a team regardless of how polite you are. Too many parents would prefer to complain versus being part of the solution.

I would encourage the author to volunteer to coach, referee, be a linesmen or become part of the WYS executive. If you want change, step up and make it happen. Don’t hide behind an anonymous letter to the editor.

ith the demands of our ultra-modern work, family and social lives, it is often difficult to find the time to relax and decompress after a stressful week.

Alonda Nichols believes that more people should take the time to care for their bodies and their minds by enjoying some well-earned rest and relaxation, and after 18 years of working in the spa industry, she has recently opened her own shop called The Thymeless Apothecary in St. Jacobs.

“A lot of time people won’t go [to a spa] until they get a gift certificate, and then they’re kind of forced into it,” admits Nichols, whose store is located in the upper level of 1369 King St. N. in the heart of downtown.

“But then after that it might be something they think about doing on a regular basis, but it’s still very difficult

for a number of people.”

At The Thymeless Apothecary, Nichols will provide everything customers might need to create their own spa experience at home. From rich body butter to scented candles and therapeutic bath salts, Nichols has you covered.

This is not her first time running her own spa and boutique, either.

Nichols owned and operated Healing Roots Spa in Cambridge for 11 years before deciding to downsize and move to a new location, going from 4,500 square feet in Cambridge to just 900 in St. Jacobs.

And after nearly two decades in the spa industry and two certifications in aromatherapy under her belt, the former schoolteacher from Kitchener has developed a deeper understanding of what customers are looking for, and aims to please at her new location.

Her store features custom

blends of sea salts and essential oils to match problem or desire a customer might have, from trouble sleeping to post-workout relaxation using salts that are brought from around the globe and into your bathroom.

“We have Dead Sea salts from Israel, Bolivian salt from the Andes, salt from the Mediterranean, French salt, and Himalayan salt,” explained Nichols. “They all have specific properties.

They detoxify or relax muscle tension, and I custom blend whatever fragrance they want. I kind of play around a little and it’s fun.”

The Thymeless Apothecary also offers a specialized facial treatment to help tone, tighten and hydrate the face for age-defying results. Nichols offers one hour, 90-minute, and one-hour-and-45-minute treatments. Customers can also opt for a half-hour massage and a half-hour facial package, or 40 minutes of

reflexology administered by Nichols herself.

Also known as ‘zone therapy,’ reflexology is an alternative medicine that involves the physical act of applying pressure to feet, hand or ears with hand techniques with the aim of creating physical changes in the body.

All of these treatments will be as holistic and natural as possible, an important feature for Nichols.

“People are very concerned with holistic and organic and natural,” she said. “I get that asked all the time; ‘What is in the product? Is it natural?

Are there preservatives?’ and that sort of thing.

“Customers are more savvy, certainly.”

By removing those artificial preservatives and chemicals, however, her products tend to have a shorter shelf life and Nichols suggests replacing them every six

Ask a stallion: stress isn’t always bad armers don’t plant by hand, plough with horses or fetch pails of water from a well anymore – instead, much of their work is done with technology, making farming more efficient and modern. In that light, one of the world’s leading animal welfare experts thinks technology will replace old-fashioned approaches to livestock farming, too.

Prof. Ian Duncan, who has received the first international Medal for Outstanding Contributions from the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare, acknowledges these approaches – branding, tail docking and other techniques that are broadly called elective surgeries – are indeed a part of farming tradition. But to keep up with the rest of the world, and demands from society, he says change is essential.

Duncan has spent most of his stellar 40-year career – including the last 22 at the University of Guelph – pioneering a deeper understanding of animal welfare on the farm. His stance against aspects of livestock production, such as cages for sows and hens that allowed very limited movement, have sometimes rubbed agriculture the wrong way. However, he says, although his role was as a change agent, his intent was always pro-agriculture, if not pro status quo.

“I’m a carnivore … and I’m not against animal agriculture,” he

That’s a tough assignment. The public demands cheap food, and farmers have responded very effectively by being as efficient as possible. That’s also meant adopting economical housing or production methods that for the most part had little impact on health or production, but would not be seen in nature.

But did that mean they were wrong for the animals? That’s what Duncan’s tried to figure out.

Among his touchstones were fear, frustration and pain, and trying to understand their effects in specific situations before labelling them acceptable or unacceptable for animals. Early animal welfarists campaigned for a stress-free environment, but Duncan didn’t buy it.

He wouldn’t blindly accept physiological approaches that entailed measuring animals’ heart rates or adrenalin flow, and saying accelerated levels were unacceptable.

“A stallion’s measurable stress

level goes up greatly as it’s about to copulate with a mare,” says Duncan, “but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t enjoy it.”

However, an animal’s stress level also rises measurably and appreciably when it’s being branded, or having its tail docked. Duncan looks forward to the day when technology replaces branding with some kind of ear tag that emits a signal that can be easily read from a distance by ranchers. Tail docking’s another matter – although it may not always be extremely painful, it can lead to other problems, such as the animal’s inability to shoo flies with its tail. And that can be stressful.

Duncan thinks the public’s renewed interest in food and animalborne disease is stepping up their animal welfare concerns, as well as farmers’ openness to change. He points to a recent lecture tour in

Now, others are saying it too, at home and abroad, while farmers listen and governments make scientifically sound policy.

Duncan says the future will be distinguished by animal welfare transparency. Consumers will demand a checklist on packaging material similar to a nutrition label, he says, showing the animal that produced the meat they’re buying was raised humanely. That’s already happening to some degree, but it’s a growing demand – and ultimately, consumer demand drives farming practices, one way or another.

“It is difficult, because we do to some extent need some preservatives in the products otherwise they will go quite rancid quite quickly. Unless you refrigerate your products you are going to have to use them up much faster.”

As a former teacher, Nichols laughs when she admits that her experience in stressful situations helps her relate with her clients a little better and to understand what they might be looking for.

She hopes that more people will take the time to treat themselves, to

listen to their bodies and just relax, particularly with the busy lives we all lead these days. She says that the health benefits of taking some ‘me’ time are too simple to ignore.

“Well, mentally you can decompress and from there lessen your muscle tension and from there you can lower your blood pressure and that can help with digestive issues.

“And with reflexology – even though nothing is proven – in a lot of cases it can provide some temporary relief.”

For Nichols, there is no greater feeling than seeing a customer go home relaxed and rejuvenated.

“There is something very rewarding about the end of a treatment and how people feel really good and relaxed after. With all the stress in the world it’s nice to just give them the time away from their troubles.”

Latest expansion at Wintermar Farms sees the addition of a new seed-treatment facility

pring, always a busy time at Wintermar Farms, was especially hectic this year. The weather certainly played a role, as wet conditions hampered both their own planting schedule and the routines of their customers, eager to get seed out in their own fields. Added in to the juggling act, however, was the need to bring a new seed-treatment facility on stream.

The 8,400-square-foot expansion is the latest addition to the grain and seed-farm operation in Winterbourne. Perched at the top of the building’s 75-foot tower is seed-treating equipment capable of processing 25 tonnes of seeds every

hour.

Already doing some treatment of seeds – the addition of coatings that act as insecticides or inoculants, for instance – the company needed more room for this growing segment of the business.

“We simply needed more space. We were limited in what treatments we could offer, said Craig Martin, one of five family members involved with the operation.

“This is very much customer driven, allowing us to meet changing customer expectations.”

Treatments can be arranged in different recipes depending on farmers’ needs, essentially allowing for specialized batches in smaller quantities, he explained.

It’s certainly not the first market-driven change at Wintermar Farms.

The original operation was the growing and conditioning of crops for seed production, inspected by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The crops grown there – then and now – are the seed stock for other farmers for the next year’s growing season. Under the Cribit Seeds brand, the company provides barley and oat seeds and associated mixtures.

termar to handle some 3,000 to 4,000 tonnes of seeds each year, and about 4,000 to 5,000 tonnes of grain, more than a third of which comes from their own sources.

“When we started, we had no idea it was going to go like this,” said Martin, noting that additions are now made with future growth in mind.

The new facility is joined to a building added five years ago. And if the past two decades is any indicator, more additions are

likely to follow. In fact, on a smaller scale, plans are already underway on a new grain storage bin even as staff works the wrinkles out of the new seed facility.

There’s not much time for rest between planting season and the harvest these days.

“This used to be a quiet time of the year where we could do other projects and maintenance, but now there’s something pretty much all the time,” he laughed.

With the new facility, Wintermar Farms now has the space and the flexibility to prepare a variety of products, all of which

can be shipped according to need: 25-kilogram bags, 1,000 kg totes or bulk loaded into trucks.

There’s also more room for storage, as space is often at a premium at peak times in particular: spring for seeds, harvest time for grains. On the food and beverage side, there’s a steady pace throughout the year to go along with the seasonal rushes that keeps 15 employees hopping much of the time.

Group of EDSS graduates returned to the school last weekend to mark 40th anniversary Colin Dewar

B

ack in 1971 no one had heard of Facebook or emails but these now-commonplace tools helped a former graduating class from EDSS reunite after 40 years.

Since graduating back then, Kevin Martin had moved all over North America while working as a systems programmer for numerous companies.

It was during his wife’s high school reunion in the United States that Martin began to think about his own classmates and wondered what they were all doing.

“My wife’s reunions take place every five years and during the last one I realized that in 2011 it would be 40 years since any of the Grade 13 students from my graduating year had reunit-

ed and I wanted to do something special for it,” said Martin.

Taking to Facebook last August, Martin created a reunion group page for his classmates to see if there was any interest in holding a get-together.

Having lost touch with everyone from the school, Martin had to start from scratch. Using the online white pages he tracked

down former classmate Ron Bronson, asking him if he would be willing to help plan the reunion.

“Once I spoke with (Bronson) everything just started to click into place,” said Martin. “He knew someone, who knew a couple others and they all kept in touch with a few more. The next thing you know we had a good sized group that decided to meet up.”

The reunion started to take shape and with the help of Martin’s former classmate Linda (Finlay) Bowman they began an aggressive email campaign looking for graduates of ’71.

“Everyone was pretty good about responding,” said Martin. “The technology we have today really helped us track everyone

othing beats a great, home-made turkey sandwich. With all the right fixin’s, like the fantastic garden tomatoes, fresh lettuce (and optional local bacon) this is the ultimate summer supper. We’ve also included a recipe for a homemade Herb Mayonnaise to try on the sandwich as well.

This mayonnaise will keep for about five days in the refrigerator.

Brining the turkey breast first in a salt and maple syrup solution makes the final product extremely moist and flavourful. Makes lots of leftovers for lunches during the week.

Combine all of the brine ingredients in a large pot and bring to a simmer, stirring to dissolve salt and syrup. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature,

then refrigerate until chilled (option: use 1/2 the amount of water and cool quicker by removing from heat and adding 2 L of ice cubes); Place brine in a large container that will fit the turkey breast.

Cover the turkey breast with the chilled brine. The brine must cover the meat entirely; Cover and refrigerate for 4 hours, up to 12 hours; After brining, allow 1 hour, or up to a day, for the turkey to be out of the salt solution so that it can rest to allow the salt remaining in the flesh to distribute itself evenly. Remember, brining acts as a preservative as well, so your meat or poultry will have a much longer shelf life; To roast: pre-heat oven to 350°F; Mix together oil, pepper, maple syrup and thyme and rub all over turkey breast; Place breast in a roasting pan fitted with a rack and roast until the

internal temperature of the turkey reaches 180°F, about 1 hour; Remove and let turkey rest at least 20 minutes before slicing.

For the ultimate sandwich, toast some fresh sourdough bread, and then spread each side with a little mayo. Place some local aged cheddar on the first slice, then top with a few slices of the maple turkey breast, and then some sliced Elmira tomatoes, a little lettuce and then top with the other slice of bread.

In a bowl place egg yolk, mustard and garlic; Slowly whisk in canola oil, beginning with just a few drops at a time; Whisk in lemon juice, vinegar and herbs; season to taste with salt and pepper.

Using emails to correspond with one another the class began to share stories of their lives and what they had been up to since graduation.

“Some would tell us about their careers, others about family, most of them were just glad to be counting grandchildren,” said Martin.

On July 9, 40 former students from a class of 75 reunited in the parking lot of EDSS before heading into the school for a tour by former teacher Paul Kaulbfleisch and current principal Mary Anne Richer.

“Everyone was so happy, they all had big smiles and were very excited to see each other and the school,” said Martin. “Once we got inside it was pandemonium everyone just wanted to stop and talk to

one another we barely got to see the school.”

After the tour the classmates met up with their spouses and headed over to The Gardens at Mooder Horticultural for the afternoon, sharing more stories.

“I had not seen most of these people since I was in university,” said Martin. “Now I will make it a point of keeping in contact with most of them. I have their email address now so it should be easy.”

The class reunion was more intimate for Martin rather than attending the 75th anniversary of EDSS reunion in 2014.

“I spent five years with these people; we all shared the same classes and teachers and have similar stories. This was a great turn out for a small group and I am glad we did it this way.”

Martin hopes the class will reunite in 10 years for the 50th anniversary, saying “I’m up for it.”

Excitement follows as these girls get rolling

St. Jacobs woman happy to be part of roller derby revival t will be a blast from the past next Saturday night when the women of the Tri-City Roller Girls strap on their skates at the Waterloo Recreation Complex to take on their derby sisters from London.

Roller derbies are gaining popularity across North America, with more and more women participating.

Even Hollywood has jumped on the bandwagon, with Drew Barrymore producing the hit movie ‘Whip It.’ Fishnet stockings are still a standard at the rink, but this is not the roller derby from the 1970s. This is a sport.

The Tri-City Roller Girls are a skater-run, flattrack roller derby league that have been taking the track by storm, facing off against teams from Canada and the U.S. for four seasons.

Considered to be one of the fastest-growing sports world worldwide, roller derby combines a unique mix of athletics, creativity and camaraderie.

With leagues in nearly every major city in Canada, the game has re-emerged with the emphasis shifted from the theatrics to athleticism.

As the sport works to legitimize itself new rules have been enacted especially where safety is concerned.

Horst took up the sport in September 2009 after seeing a match with a friend.

“I had no idea roller derby was around here or what it was, and when I came out and watched a bout I was hooked instantly. I knew I had to skate

somehow,” said Horst.

The league, which runs from April to October, originally started off with two teams, the Venus Fly Tramps and the Vicious Dishes. A third team, the Total Knock Outs, joined this season after an overwhelming demand for a new squad.

“There is a lot of interest from women from all walks of life to join the league,” said Horst.

rom sun up to sun down, Parker Lobban would rather be on the golf greens than just about anywhere else in the world.

The 13-year-old golfer from St. Clements is in his first year of competition as a member of the Canadian Junior Golf Association on the Junior Linkster Series, and he loves every minute.

“Some day’s I’ll just go out all day. I’ll go out at eight in the morning until maybe

eight at night,” he said, sitting in the living room of his St. Clements home that backs onto Paradise Lake.

“I can hit balls for two hours, go play 18 [holes], go back and hit balls for another few hours then go out and play another nine.”

He’s played in a number of tournaments already this summer in the Bantam division for players 13 and under against other golfers from across the province and mostly from larger urban centres like Toronto or Mississauga.

St. Clements teen turns passion for golf into a spot on Canadian Junior Golf Association tour

ON COURSE Parker Lobban, a 13-year-old resident of St. Clements, is enjoying his first year with the Canadian Junior Golf Association.

He finished fourth this past Monday at an invitational tournament at St George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto – the same site as the 2010 and 2011 RBC Canadian Open golf tournament – with a score of 83.

“I didn’t finish as well as I could have, I tied for fourth but had a couple triple [bogies],” he said.

Aiming for more than pie in the sky archery

T

he other day, I got lucky. That’s right; I went to my favourite outdoors store and found melt-on glue for affixing field points and broadheads to my wooden arrows. What a break!

I needed this because I am deep into my annual pre-bow season preparation. And, since I hope to use a traditional long bow to take a deer this fall, I need to get very good at it

by October.

For some archers, this is natural.

For me, though I have been shooting long bows for a long time, it requires constant practice – probably a couple of dozen arrows a day, from here on in. The goal is to consistently hit a pie-plate-sized target at 20 yards.

Only then will I feel comfortable, hunting deer – and paper plates – with that tool.

The pie-plate standard is time-honoured advice for traditional archers.

Essentially, we’re told that a bow-

Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve Galea hunter’s effective range ends when he or she can’t place every arrow inside a pie plate. That’s the bare minimum, because a pie plate is just about the size of a deer’s vital area.

Bowhunters don’t get enough credit for this innovation, by the way. But I’m here to tell you that it was this need to find a pie-plate-sized target that probably led to the invention of the standard-sized pie plate and, afterwards, perhaps even pies to place in them.

Then again, I could be wrong.

All I really know is that, right now, I can place about 75 per cent of my arrows from my long bow inside a

pie plate at 20 yards. I can easily do much better with my compound and crossbow. But this year, as I said, I want to challenge myself by hunting more traditionally, so I need to practice with the former.

A lot of people ask why I’d bother using a long bow when the other types of bows are so much easier.

The answer is simple: I enjoy the challenge of shooting a long bow. It takes good form and your muscles actually feel like they had a workout after a session at the range. Secondly, they are light and easy to carry in the bush and there is a romantic feel to them that harkens back to the days of Sherwood Forest. Which explains why I ordered the tights and cape.

Seriously, though – they are effective in the right hands and they are satisfying to shoot. Besides, they have been taking deer and bigger game for thousands of years, so they

too are proven. Sometimes, in this high-tech day and age, we forget that.

The difference is you have to work harder at this style of shooting before you hunt. And that’s something I also find enjoyable. Every arrow I shoot reminds me of the upcoming fall. Every target I centre puts a smile on my face.

I’ve made some real breakthroughs lately, too. The other day I placed a stick the diameter of my thumb in front of my target at 15 yards and hit it twice in front of a credible and astounded witness. I quit there and then: you don’t push that kind of luck.

Soon, I’ll get to the point when hitting a paper plate at distances of up to 25 yards is done without any thought or hesitation whatsoever.

Which also explains why I’m not attending any church picnics or backyard barbecues until after deer season.

Roller Derby: Matches are more about sport than '70s entertainment > CONTINUED FROM PG. 21 penalty box. Players spend 60 seconds in the penalty box after accruing four minor penalties or committing just one major penalty. This may not sound like much time, but a minute can be more than half of a jam.

The goal of each match-up is to skate in a tight pack, working together to score points while stopping the opposing team from scoring.

Each team has five players in the pack: one jammer, three blockers and a pivot.

Before a match starts, teams line up side-by-side with the pivots first, blockers behind them and jammers at the back. When the whistle blows, the pivots and blockers start to skate around the track. A second whistle blows and the jammers race to catch up to the pack. The first jammer to get through the pack without leaving the track becomes the lead jammer. The lead jammer’s team gets a point every time she passes one of the other team’s players.

Horst is a versatile player taking on many different rolls on her teams, including

the outside blocker, the pivot, which means she is the blocker that controls the pack’s speed, and jammer.

“My confidence has gone up this season so I enjoy playing the different positions,” she said. “The way roller derby is changing, the ability to play different positions helps you become a better player: as a blocker you learn about the jammer and you can become a better jammer and vice versa.”

Never one to play organized sports as a teenager, Horst has discovered she is competitive and enjoys pushing herself to the extreme, which has come with its bumps and bruises.

“I’ve had a couple x-rays and possibly concussed at some point: it happens, it comes with the territory. If I am going to get hurt I would prefer it be during the derby.”

Tri-City Roller Girls are the third league in Canada to be full members of the Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association, along with Montreal and Hamilton. No longer using the banked track from the 1970s the league can now play in any arena across the country.

“There is a great sisterhood amongst the girls in the league, the sport has been growing for sometime and we just want people to know we are out here,” said Horst.

“It’s a fun time for the whole family.”

As for Horst’s name, Freudian Whip, she wanted to play up her psychology degree but more importantly she wanted

something her grandparents could shout out at a bout so it needed to be appropriate and ‘whip’ comes from the move that skaters do during match-ups.

It’s clear he has a passion for the game that is unrivaled, and he believes that passion is important because it motivates him to be on the course whenever he has a spare second and to continually strive to improve his game.

“When I wake up I want to go and hit balls and try and fix the mistakes that I made yesterday and try to lower my score and become a better golfer.”

The young golfer credits his grandfather, Ernie Hauser, as his biggest role model in the sport. He’s the one who takes the teen to most of his tournaments throughout the summer. Lobban says he taught him almost everything he knows about the sport.

“Parker basically spends his entire summer out there,

and he enjoys it so I think that’s the most important thing,” said Lobban’s mother, Stephanie Hauser. “If you’re going to push a kid to golf they might not enjoy it, so they have to have a passion to do it because it requires a lot of focus and dedication to keep moving forward.”

Lobban’s mother also agreed that golf should continue to serve her son well in the foreseeable future.

“It’s not the type of sport that you can only play un-

til you’re 20,” she said. “It’s something you can play until you’re 85 years old.”

Lobban admits he isn’t sure what kind of a future golf holds for him – he’s only heading into Grade 8 at St. Clement Catholic school, after all – but he does know that the skills and lessons learned on the golf course now will serve him well for years to come.

“I find it teaches a lot of life skills – like honesty, focus and how to be a better person.”

The ceremony also included mayor Brian McMullan and Kim Craitor, MPP for Niagara Falls and St. Catharines who threw the ceremonial tip-off.

Metzger was named one of 12 players to the team in January following an intensive week-long selection camp in Winnipeg, and the tournament runs until July 21.

Team Canada’s first game of the tournament against South Africa followed the ceremony, and they will play two more games before the start of the quarterfinal round on July 19.

Elmira’s Amberley Beatty has parlayed a love of singing into tribute shows, Nashville recording Steve Kannon

A

mberley Beatty never intended to sing professionally. She liked to go out on karaoke night, certainly. Same for performing in local plays. But one thing led to another, with serendipity playing a big role in the Elmira woman becoming a tribute artist and, recently, getting a chance to record in Nashville.

She used to sing karaoke in Elmira, later travelling to Waterloo when there was no longer a karaoke night in town. There she met some tribute artists who would take part, too. One night about eight years ago, one of them suggested she should open for him at an upcoming show.

“He told me ‘you should get an outfit and do Patsy Cline.’”

She did just that. All nerves, she was instantly hooked.

Today, her repertoire has expanded to include tributes to Loretta Lynn, Gretchen Wilson and Connie Francis.

It’s a fulfilling accomplishment for the 32-yearold mother of two young girls; after her day job as a hairstylist, she gets to walk

out on stage and entertain an audience doing what she loves: singing.

“I sing everything – I like all kinds of music.

I sing around the house, I sing all the time,” she said, noting that’s always been the case. “My mother told me I used to sing along with all the jingles on TV.” Growing up in St. Jacobs, she sang in the choir, often being picked for solos. At St. Jacobs PS, she took part in the school’s first play. Later, as a student at EDSS, she took part in drama classes under Gord Davis. After leaving school, she would often join shows directed by Davis following his retirement, including a stint with Kitchener-Waterloo Musical Productions.

“I kinda followed him around,” she laughed.

A fan of all kinds of music, Beatty early on developed a taste for traditional country music, which led to her performing songs by the legendary Patsy Cline when she was out for karaoke night.

“I enjoy the traditional stuff. I like the new country, but this is where it came from,” she said of the classic material.

Making the tribute as authentic as possible is her first priority.

Along with the wigs, costumes, accents and twangs – Kentucky for Loretta and Virginia for Patsy, for instance – that means showcasing the music as it’s meant to be

enjoyed.

Her faithful treatment of traditional country music led her to be introduced to recording artist Allen Karl, with whom she recorded an album of duets – If I Could Spend Today Loving You – last year. The week she spent in Nashville working on the CD opened up a world of possibilities.

“The live stuff is fun, but recording is really addictive,” said Beatty, who’s now interested in doing some recordings of her own.

Serendipity was also at play when Beatty met country music legend Gordie Tapp, who saw her perform as Loretta Lynn.

Impressed, he asked her to join him in one of his future multi-act shows. Last weekend she did just that for the first time, performing at the Burlington Country & Blues Bar B Que. “I’m blown away that I get to do that.”

As new doors open, she’s ready to step through them, thankful for the opportunities to sing and perform. Like the first time she sang karaoke, she still gets nervous, but it’s a good feeling, said Beatty.

“Being nervous reminds me I’m getting the chance to entertain people. I value every second I get out there.”

We’d all like to believe that The Good is stronger than The Bad, but is it? What do psychologists say?

A.

In everyday life, bad events have stronger and more lasting consequences than comparable good events, says David G. Myers in Social Psychology: Tenth Edition. Consider: • Destructive acts harm close relationships more than constructive acts build them. (Cruel words linger after kind ones have been forgotten.)

• Despite our natural optimism, it’s easier to recall past bad emotional events than good ones.

• Losing money upsets people more than gaining the same amount makes them happy.

• A bad reputation is easier to acquire and harder to shed than a good one. (A single act of lying can destroy one’s reputation for integrity.)

• We are sensitive to the slightest hint of criticism: Said writer Larry L. King, “I have discovered over the years that good reviews strangely fail to make the author feel as good as bad reviews make him feel bad.”

What was the point?

A.

“Frass,” for anyone unfamiliar with the niceties of grasshopper life, is the powdery waste material passed by plant-eating insects, says

New Scientist magazine.

Adult grasshoppers use a hind leg kick to project their frass a considerable distance, averaging 252 and 487 millimetres for males and females respectively, or more than 10 times their body length and 100 times the length of the frass pellet. Unfortunately, added the journal, “now that this aspect of the grasshopper lifestyle has been so thoroughly investigated, putative authors searching for an original topic will just have to find something else.”

Woodpecker anatomy has inspired a new shock absorber for delicate electronics in plane crashes and bombings, say S. H. Yoon and S. Park in American Scientist magazine.

Since the birds repeatedly drum their heads against hard surfaces without brain damage, engineers used x-ray scans of a golden-fronted woodpecker to model its shock-absorbing structures, including elastic beak and spongy skull. Then the researchers mimicked key parts of the bird’s head with a cylinder made of metal, rubber and porous glass. Diodes and other delicate devices inside the cylinder survived more than 99% of test hits into a wall at a deceleration 60,000 times that of gravity. “Survival was only 74% in conventional shock absorbers.”
