dispute between Canada Post and the private postal outlet in Heidelberg means residents will no longer have a post office, joining many small communities that have been stripped of service.

As of Monday, residents will have to travel to St. Clements for their mail while Canada Post continues to install community mailboxes to replace the serviced outlet. The mailboxes are to go into use starting Feb. 20.

Steve McCathie, owner of Forwell Super Variety of Heidelberg that has hosted the franchised postal outlet since 2000, lays the blame on a longstanding contract dispute with the Crown corporation. He was informed Monday the outlet will close Jan. 23.

The variety store hosts 440 post boxes for residents and businesses, and provides almost all of the services a normal post office does.

“We are a busy post office and larger than a lot of other rural outlets in the area,” said McCathie. “Since we are a franchise

Taxes will continue to climb in Waterloo Region, councillors decided this week. For 2012, residents will be hit with another 2.53-per-cent increase, representing about $41 more this year on the average tax bill.

More than half of the tax hike – 1.3 per cent – will go to the police budget.

The remaining 1.23 per cent is aimed at more spending on children’s services, emergency medical services (ambulance), poverty reduction initiatives, affordable transit and child care.

About half the property taxes paid

illiam Walkey is either a marketing genius, or one of the unluckiest men in Elmira.

The student teacher at Park Manor Senior Public School spent 24 hours in front of the Foodland in Elmira to raise awareness for the Coats for Kids campaign at Park Manor Senior Public School on Jan. 13 and 14.

Coats for Kids is an initiative started by Grade 6 students at Park Manor back in November to collect gently used coats and donations for less fortunate children throughout the township. So far they’ve collected about $400 for the cause.

Temperatures over the course of last Friday night were the coldest they had been for much of the winter so far, at one point touching minus-11 degrees Celsius without the windchill.

“I should have waited until the summer,” laughed a frigid looking Walkey on Saturday morning. “Coats for Kids in August just doesn’t have the same appeal, though.”

He made plans to spend the night at the store several weeks ago, and it wasn’t until the middle of last week that he realized just how cold it was going to be. An avid camper during the summer, it was the first time Walkey had slept outdoors during a frigid winter night.

“I have about three sleeping bags, a foot of insulation underneath, two blankets over the tent, and then a tarp over that,” he said. “I nicknamed the shelter an iceberg and it got kind of chilly at some points.”

He said that students from the school braved the cold to visit him at various times during his venture, and many brought him hot beverages to try and boost his spirits. He also said the

response from the public was favourable and that he had collected a number of donations in a blue water jug.

“The kids who started Coats for Kids were doing such a great job that I offered my services here for a little bit of an incentive and motivation, and to show them what one simple thought can lead to,” said Walkey.

“I just want to show them that everyone at the school is behind them – the teachers, the staff and even the community as a whole.”

The 24-year-old Waterloo resident currently splits his time between Wilfrid Laurier University and Park Manor. During his practicum he spends several consecutive weeks at the school, otherwise he is at the school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

“Right now I’m on my two-day cycle, which kind of limits how I can get involved, but the students find a way

to keep me involved and accept me into the school community,” he said.

Walkey also tried to record his experiences during the night using a video camera but there wasn’t enough light, so he sent out a few messages on his Twitter stream instead.

The toughest part of the entire ordeal was waking up Saturday morning, when the outside temperature was minus-10 degrees, the temperature inside the tent was about four degrees, and the temperature inside his sleeping bag was a toasty 30 degrees.

“It’s been quite an experience, both physically and mentally.”

For his efforts, Walkey managed to collect $295 and 10 more coats.

Woolwich is looking into a historical designation for Chalmers Presbyterian church in Winterbourne after some 60 residents petitioned for the building to be protected.

Built in 1870, the structure has essentially remained unchanged over the last 142 years. Last month, however, the church held its last service due to a declining membership. Now, residents are worried the building could be lost to demolition if the property is sold.

Discussing the issue at this week’s council meeting, director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley said the township has already had preliminary discussions with the owners, the Presbyterian Church, who appear lukewarm about the idea of an historical designation. Woolwich is still prepared to go ahead with the process, the first step of which is to determine if designation is warranted.

“We generally look for owner support, but there are exceptions,” he noted.

Ward 3 Coun. Bonnie Bryant noted residents are eager to see the church protected.

“They’re concerned that it remains as is,” she said, noting the building is an important landmark in the settlement.

Elmira woman not suckered by would-be phone scam occurred on Arthur Street in Elmira when a 19-year-old Cambridge man driving a 1996 Chevy pickup slid into the back of a transport truck that had stopped for traffic.

The Cambridge man pulled over the side of the road but the transport truck, which was described as white with no company markings, continued down the street. Damage to the pickup was severe. There were no injuries and no charges were laid.

The caller claimed he had been in a car accident and was charged with impaired driving.

A second person then spoke to her, claiming to be a lawyer by the name of Patrick Wilson and asking the woman to send money for assistance to an address in Quebec.

After speaking to the caller the woman contacted her grandson’s school to confirm his attendance. Police have notified the Canadian anti-fraud centre and forwarded the complaint to Project Colt.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION CENTRES TRANSIT PROJECT ASSESSMENT (TPA) PROCESS

The Regional Municipality of Waterloo is proposing a rapid transit system to enhance transit service in high-demand transportation corridors and to guide and manage long-term growth within the Region.

Stage 1 of the rapid transit system consists of light rail transit from Conestoga Mall to Fairview Park Mall and adapted bus rapid transit from Fairview Park Mall to the Ainslie Street Terminal.

As part of the Ontario Regulation 231/08 Transit Project Assessment Process, the Region’s rapid transit team is hosting three public consultation centres.

Information will be available at the centres regarding potential impacts that the rapid transit project may have on the environment. Public comments and feedback will be collected at each centre.

Breslau residents push for traffic- Wellesley clears calming on Woolwich Street way for cell tower Petition, plea for safety of children convinces council to look at volume of cars, speeding pattern of drivers Steve Kannon

rowth in Breslau that has worsened longstanding safety concerns on Woolwich Street has residents calling for traffic-calming measures.

Woolwich Street resident Jennifer Williams presented a petition signed by 30 of her neighbours to councillors Tuesday night, asking for the township to act.

For its part, Woolwich plans to look at the situation, suggesting a formal traffic study would help planners decide the next steps.

This is not the first time residents have been out to council demanding action. Studies in 2005, 2006 and 2007 showed both traffic volumes and speeding to be an issue, with the council of the day ultimately deciding to reduce the speed limit on Woolwich Street to 40 km/h from 50. The township also put stop signs at the intersection of Dolman Street after considering the

installation of three stop along the stretch of Woolwich Street running through the village.

Acknowledging past efforts, Williams argued this week that the problem was never fully solved. Now, with development in Breslau, especially the Riverland subdivision to the south, there’s more traffic and more speeding.

“The speed is dangerously fast,” she said, urging the installation of speed humps to slow traffic.

Asked by Mayor Todd Cowan if speed humps were the only solution, she replied “I don’t see any other way … than an obstacle so that they can’t speed.”

Attempting to nip in the bud protests about the use of the trafficcalming devices, she argued they only pose a possible damage threat to speeding vehicles, adding the same is true of noise complaints: cars travelling at the appropriate speed would have no problem.

“I am asking the

township, in the face of possible opposition, to avoid a predictable tragedy and implement traffic-calming speed humps.”

Reminded by Coun.

Mark Bauman that the township previously installed a temporary speed bump on Woolwich Street in 2006, director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley said he would be looking at the information collected from previous studies.

Kennaley suggested using the township’s mobile speed trailer to measure traffic volumes and speeds along Woolwich Street, adding the caveat that the device can’t be used in winter as it interferes with snowclearing and doesn’t work in cold winter temperatures.

The study would have to wait until after May 1, subject to study locations already on the township’s list.

Cowan, however, suggested safety concerns should be the top priority rather than adding locations on a

Looking at the big picture, Bauman noted the problem would also be addressed if the region would speed up completion of the Breslau bypass route, connecting Ebycrest Road with Fountain Street to channel more cars away from Woolwich Street.

Opened in the fall of 2004 at a cost of $1.6 million, the bypass – formally Reg. Rd. 17, or Fountain Street – was only slowly adopted by motorists. Five years ago, during the last studies of traffic as residents pushed for safety measures, almost three times as many drivers (7,000-9,000 a day) – used Woolwich Street versus 3,000 for Fountain Street.

proposed Rogers telecommunications tower near the village of St. Clements received clearance this week from Wellesley council, giving the company the green light to proceed with construction.

Councillors passed a statement of concurrence acknowledging that Rogers undertook all necessary steps to mitigate the public concerns and resolve the relevant and nonrelevant issues surrounding this particular tower.

The 45-metre tower, which is to be built at 4074 Hessen Strasse, drew the ire of nearby citizens last fall, prompting them to appear in front of councillors in October to request support in opposing to the project.

Since the tower is not slated to be built on a residentially-zoned piece of property, there was no consultation required under Industry Canada guidelines, but Rogers chose to proceed with the consultation process anyway.

“I deliberately held Rogers to the higher standard of Industry Canada’s public consultation procedures which require full consultation, and I have taken this site through probably the most extensive public consultation that we have ever done on any site,” said Rogers’ site acquisition and municipal relations consultant Jeff McKay. itchener-Conestoga MPP Michael Harris has introduced a new youth initiative that he hopes will help reinvigorate interest in politics and civic engagement.

Unveiled last Saturday at his New Year’s levee in St. Jacobs, MPP For a Day intends to bring some 16 students per year to Queen’s Park in Toronto to see just how the provincial government works and what some of the MPP’s responsibilities are as an elected representative.

“It’s going to promote youth leadership, give them the opportunity to participate in discussions made by our community members, and really get them engaged,” said Harris.

“I think there is really no better way than to reach out and give them the opportunity of experiencing what an elected official’s role is, and give them a real hands-on life experience.”

MPP for a Day will

run from February to June and September to November. Each month, one successful Grade 6 or 7 student and one Grade 8, 9 or 10 student will go to Queen’s Park and be introduced in the legislature, attend Question Period, meet legislators, tour the legislative buildings and spend time with Harris. At the end of the day, participants will receive a certificate designating them honourary MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga.

To apply for the program, interested students must complete an application form available online, which includes several questions about Ontario’s political system and a 100-word short-answer response detailing why they would make a good MPP for a day. Students in Grades 8 to 10 are asked to provide an additional response explaining one thing they would like to change in the province.

Details such as permission slips from parents or organizing a parental chaperone still

need to be arranged, but those should be ironed out in the coming weeks.

Harris said he made a commitment to engaging local youth in their community during the election last fall; this program will help achieve that. He cited growing concerns of a population that has become disinterested in the political process and hopes that this program can help reverse that trend. A recordlow 49.2 per cent of all eligible voters cast a ballot in last fall’s election, and only 37.4 per cent of Canadians aged 18 to 24 cast a ballot in the 2008 federal election.

“There seems to be a real gap in youth involvement, and I think this is a way to engage the leaders of tomorrow.”

Breslau now home to fledgling farmers’ market Starting slowly, but organizers see bright future in growing community that’s without a grocery store James Jackson

esidents of Breslau looking for fresh, local produce won’t have to look much further than their own backyard to get it.

On Monday night, the first local food market was held at the Breslau Community Centre and although the turnout was sparse, organizers hope to see it grow in the coming months.

“We thought we might have been going last summer,” laughed Carolyn Snider, who along with Grace Sudden has organized the market, which ran from 5-7 p.m. in the community centre’s kitchen.

“It gives us a chance to get going now in the winter on a small basis, because you don’t want to suddenly start up so large that you’re totally overwhelmed.”

For the winter months the market will only run every two to three weeks, but they hope that by the time spring and summer rolls around they’ll

have enough interest and enough vendors to run every Friday evening.

“It’s not going to be a morning market or even a noon market; the idea is to catch people after work and before the weekend so you can come and pick up your supply.”

Thus far the pair has only secured one vendor, Bailey’s Local Foods out of Waterloo, but they are optimistic that once word spreads the market will become very popular in their community.

Snider noted the enormous expansion in Breslau in the past few years and the growth in the number of young families as well for one of the reasons why she thought the time was right for the market.

“It’s all subdivisions around here, huge subdivisions,” said Snider.

“All these people here and there isn’t even a grocery store in Breslau.”

“This year when the cherries were to be pollinated and the bees were to be out it was raining, so we only had one week of cherries,” she noted.

“In a grocery store you don’t know where your produce came from, and you sure as heck don’t know when it was picked.

In the spring, most of our produce has been picked that morning or the day before.”

Prices are a little bit higher than customers can expect to pay in the grocery store, and if local farmers tried to compete with the prices of food trucked and flown from California to our grocery stores, they would go bankrupt, Ivanco noted.

McCathie said the compensation to provide the service works out to $5.30 per hour, far lower than the provincial minimum wage.

The store has to make up the difference in pay for the two employees that work at the outlet.

Canada Post and the storeowner have been at odds over a couple of contract terms that McCathie won’t accept.

Along with maintaining the current pay, Canada Post wants to install new computer equipment and scales.

McCathie said the organization refuses to pay for the estimated $750 a year in electricity he believes the equipment

will use.

Another contract term concerns a preauthorized debit arrangement that McCathie said would give Canada Post unfiltered access to the store’s bank account.

“What it boils down to is that the little independent guys have no power with Canada Post and we are seeing rural outlets close down all over the region like in Maryhill and Floradale,” said McCathie. “We are not a union, we are just a family-run business.

It is too dangerous for my business to allow anyone into my bank account at anytime.”

McCathie offered to use electronic banking to pay his monthly bill but said Canada Post refused that offer, demanding access to his business bank account.

When it became clear negotiations were getting nowhere, the storeowner contacted

Kitchener-Conestoga MP Harold Albrecht in August, providing him with the letters from Canada Post threatening to close the outlet.

“He was very surprised by the tone of the letters and was not aware of the inequalities between post offices across the region,” said McCathie. “He contacted me in October and told me he had spoken with representatives from Canada Post and they told him they were not treating me any different than another outlet.”

Albrecht said he believes that Canada Post has not lived up to the terms of the postal service charter.

“I am continuing to work with Mr. Lebel, the Transport Minister, and Canada Post to determine how we can correct this failure.

We should have been consulted prior to the change and I expect Canada Post to find a

solution that will ensure that families and businesses continue to receive the postal services that they are use to,” said Albrecht. “We expect Canada Post to abide by the charter and provide quality postal services that we can count on.”

McCathie said Canada Post told him when he first became a dealer that he would not make any money being a postal outlet but by providing the mail service but he would have people coming through his store.

Although the post office does bring in some revenue for McCathie’s business, he said he is more concerned about how the closure will inconvenience residents of the village.

“It is very unfortunate that they have decided to close us down because this was a place where people in the community would meet. We don’t have

Rogers also showed that the current site was the most suitable for the area based on the number of residents impacted and the level of transmission coverage required.

There were other proposed sites for the tower, but none met all the necessary criteria as well as the current site.

“This is simply a case of NIMBY [not in my backyard]; of course they are not opposed to moving it elsewhere,” said McKay of the citizens opposed to the tower in an email to chief administrative officer Susan Duke dated Nov. 15.

The township has no authority to dictate the location of the tower because all aspects relating to communication towers, from their engineering to their location, fall under the federal jurisdiction of Industry Canada.

Councillors debated at length about their decision, ultimately opting to concur rather than enter into a potentially lengthy – and expensive – impasse with Rogers. Should an impasse have occurred the issue would have been sent to Industry Canada, who would have examined all the documentation and likely ruled in favour of the telecommunications company anyway.

Robert Doerner, who lives just down the road from the proposed site, was at the meeting Tuesday night to voice his opposition to the tower based on his ongoing health concerns about long-term exposure to radiation from the tower.

McKay countered those concerns by saying that under Safety Code 6, which covers the health effects of electromagnetic fields, Health Canada has determined these types of towers pose no threat to human health.

The telecommunications act also says that appealing the location of a radio tower

based on health concerns are not reasonable grounds given the federal ruling within Safety Code 6.

“We have no responsibility for the legislation of Health Canada; our obligation is one of compliance,” he said.

“We have proven and certified that at the Doerner property the emissions from this facility will be in excess of 500 times below that which is considered a risk. Health is not an issue. These wouldn’t be built if health was an issue.”

While councillors seemed sympathetic to the concerns of the residents, they also acknowledged the futility of stalling the process any further.

“If we want to hold this up we’ll just end up spinning our wheels and it’ll cost us money down the road in legal fees,” said Coun. Herb Neher.

“We’re just turning good money into bad money for the sake of delaying something that’s going to happen anyway.”

Mail service will continue in Heidelberg, maintains a Canada Post spokesperson.

“Unfortunately we could not reach an agreement with the current dealer to maintain the postal outlet,” said spokesman John Caines. “In the interim, beginning Monday residents of Heidelberg will be getting their mail by general delivery at the St. Clements post office until the community mailboxes are ready. Those community mailboxes will be closer to their homes.”

McCathie said he was willing to keep the post office open until Canada Post had the community boxes ready so that

residents of Heidelberg would not have to travel to St. Clements, as some do not have their own transportation.

“Canada Post is closing the office just out of spite. They didn’t like that I was standing up for myself, they want to be able to call all the shots,” said McCathie.

Caines said Canada Post is still talking to other businesses in Heidelberg to see if they can find another location to host the post office. If so, they will re-establish the retail outlet.

Given the fact that there are not many retailers in the village and the fact that the community boxes are being built, McCathie believes that it will be unlikely for another outlet to open in Heidelberg, but he is hoping for a change of mind by Canada Post at the last minute that will allow him keep his postal outlet open.

MP pension reform is just the tip of the iceberg

E

xcessive MP pensions brought to light this week, it’s no surprise the federal government has moved quickly to dampen the public outrage, promising changes.

Certainly the report from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation shows just how egregious MP pensions are, especially in light of the fact most Canadians don’t have a pension plan.

According to the group, it would take the average Canadian nearly 30 years to save the equivalent nest-egg necessary to produce the eventual pension payouts a backbench MP is eligible for after just six years of service, contribution levels being equal.

For those private sector workers lucky enough to have a pension, a $1to-$1 contribution between employee and employer is fairly typical. In the case of MPs, however, taxpayers contribute more than $23 for every $1 set aside by politicians themselves.

Taxpayers contributed $248,668 annually for every MP and Senator in 2009-10.

To make matters worse, MPs’ pensions, like others in the public sector, are the defined benefit kind, meaning their guaranteed fixed payouts no matter how the investment markets are doing. Typically, we top up government worker pensions with today’s tax dollars. That’s a sharp contrast to those private sector pensions that do exist, largely defined contribution types; employee-employer contributions are fixed, but the payout is dictated by how well the fund does – when the market tanks, so too does your pension.

What does that mean in real terms? The CTF reports the Parliamentary pension plan returned an annualized 10.4 per cent over the last 10 years, compared to 6.5 per cent for the Canada Pension Plan, 4.6 per

During the recessionary year of 2008, the Parliamentary pension fund grew by an annualized 10.4 per cent, while the CPP lost 18.6 per cent, the QPP lost 25 per cent, the OTPP lost 18 per cent and the S&P/ TSX lost 33 per cent.

In other words, as with regular pay raises, MPs and government workers continue to profit even as those paying the bills suffer losses.

Changes to the MP plan is a good start. Next comes the wider public sector, then much-needed reforms to CPP, as the majority of Canadian workers aren’t prepared for retirement.

However, rather than an enhanced CPP that would provide more benefits to future retirees, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty proposes a

voluntary system that employees could choose to participate in. And employers could choose to contribute to. And would be privately-administered, with all the associated fees, not to mention the possible pitfalls of an industry directly responsible for the latest economic meltdown.

Hardly something to ease the fears of the two-thirds of us who don’t have a company pension plan. We’d be much better off in the long run living with larger deductions from our paycheques – we don’t miss what we don’t see – than relying on personal investments. Many people lack the discipline to make regular contributions. Many who might do so are bombarded with a range of mixed messages, mostly marketing hype, from a variety of sources, with no clear answer for which is the best option for channeling retirement savings. That’s a significant obstacle.

Taiwan can afford to wait for the fall of communism in China T

he most important thing in Taiwanese politics is always left unsaid.

When I interviewed Ma Ying-jeou in 2008, just before he won the presidency for the first time, he was happy to talk about the details of his plans for better relations with the People’s Republic of China: direct flights, more trade, and the like. But ask him about the long-term future, and all you got was platitudes.

Ma has just been re-elected for a second term as president (Jan. 14).

“We’ve won,” he told jubilant supporters. “In the next four years, ties with China will be more harmonious and there will be more mutual trust and the chance of conflict is slimmer.” All true, but it still does not address the question of where all this harmony is taking Taiwan.

In his first term, Ma did everything he promised. Direct flights to the PRC resumed in late 2008, a 2009 agreement between Taipei and Beijing facilitated investment flows between the two countries, and a comprehensive trade deal was signed in June 2010.

Ma’s victory this time was smaller than in 2008: then he had a lead of 17 percentage points; now he’s down to six.

But that’s probably due mostly to the country’s slow economic growth and the widening income gap between rich and poor in recent years. There is no evidence to suggest that he lost votes because he was getting too close to China.

So here’s the question. If Ma, like almost everybody else in Taiwan, has no desire to live under Communist rule,

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER then why is there majority support for closer ties with a giant neighbour (about 65 times as many people) that refuses to recognize the legitimacy of Taiwan’s government? Beijing even threatens to attack Taiwan if it ever declares independence from China.

What can the Taiwanese be thinking?

This is where it all goes silent, except for the platitudes. But with a little thought you can figure out the logic behind the position of Ma and his supporters in the Kuomintang Party.

They know that Beijing could do terrible damage to Taiwan if it attacked, but they also know that it won’t actually do that unless Taiwan formally declares independence from China.

Beijing is willing to live with the present ambiguous relationship for a long time to come, if necessary.

Meanwhile, Taiwan has to make a living, and it has been losing market share to China’s cheaper exports for two decades now. The favoured solution is to invest in mainland industries and subsidize Taiwan’s much higher living standard with the profits. Mainland Chinese investment in Taiwan’s hi-tech sector would not hurt, either. Time for better relations with the mainland, then – but what

about the future?

The thinking goes like this. We can cozy up to China now because it serves the interests of a great many people on both sides, and it doesn’t really endanger our de facto independence. Taiwan is not disarming, and China still can’t move an army across the 180-km (110mile) Strait of Taiwan; its navy isn’t strong enough. As for the long run, it will take care of itself, because the Communist regime in Beijing will not last forever.

Nobody knows when it will end, but most politicians in Taiwan have a fair idea of how it will end. Sooner or later the Chinese economy will stumble into a recession – the enormous housing bubble in China is currently the most likely cause – and unemployment will soar. People’s mortgages will be underwater, banks will fail, and the regime’s credit will run out.

Ideology is dead in the People’s Republic. The regime insists that it gives the people “socialism with Chinese characteristics,” but in fact it gives them “unbridled capitalism with Chinese characteristics” – including a plague of corruption that mainly benefits Communist Party members.

All this is tolerable while everybody’s income is rising; it is no longer acceptable when incomes are falling.

China is a capitalist country, and it has not been granted some special exemption from the business cycle. Every once in a while, in capitalist economies, a major recession comes along.

New “downloading” — paying for useless rules

C

all it a form of taxation without representation: a long list of legislation that essentially downloads costs to municipalities without giving them a say in any of the decisions. And, to add insult to injury, most of the requirements provide no benefit to residents while lifting evermore dollars from their wallets.

From useless paperwork demanded by the Office of the Fire Marshal to overzealous water-monitoring regulations and from accessibility requirements with few benefits to all of the downside of gravel pits, Queen’s Park has long burdened municipalities with the real-world impacts of their own bureaucratic make-work schemes.

It may be futile, but Woolwich officials hope to counter that trend by making direct pitches to the provincial ministers and senior staffers at next month’s Rural Ontario Municipal Association/Ontario Good Roads Association conference.

Tackling just some of those grievances, a list of which was approved by township councillors this week, is the priority of chief administrative officer David Brenneman, who’s seen plenty of red tape in two decades of municipal service.

A clear example of the problem can be seen in what happened following the Walkerton fiasco. Instead of treating what happened as an isolated incident, compounded by Harris government cuts to inspectors, the province instituted sweeping new measures, including excessive amounts of water testing, that collectively added millions of dollars to municipal spending. There were plenty of new rules and procedures, but not one dime to help local governments pay for them. The result: not one iota of improvement, but plenty of added expenses.

“Was that (Walkerton) an overreaction to a very specific circumstance? I think you’d find that most municipalities were doing just fine … with their inspection programs.

“In cases like Walkerton, in the end the legislation becomes very reactionary.”

Brenneman notes such kneejerk reactions lead to heavy-handed changes, blanket rules that force every municipality to comply whether or not there was a problem. Poor emergency response in one town, to a flood or tornado, for instance, has led to new emergency management protocols for everyone. In almost every case, they’re not needed, but municipalities are forced to spend the money anyway.

“Often, it’s a reactionary fix,” he argues, calling the resultant costs for implementing and enforcing the rule changes “a de facto form of downloading.”

He likens the provincial approach to a manager having a problem with one employee’s conduct dealing with it by sending out a thou-shallnot directive to every employee – all the others know what the problem is, and resent being lumped in with the troublemaker. Instead, the matter should be handled directly with the employee in question.

Just as such actions by a manager have consequences in the office, the province’s decisions have repercussions across the board. Even good ideas that are fine in theory – some

And wait. The wheel will turn, and eventually there will be a different, democratic China that Taiwan can safely rejoin (though it will certainly still insist on retaining a lot of autonomy). Meanwhile keep the mainland regime sweet, and make some money.

The United States government, by the way, completely agrees with this unspoken strategy. The last thing Washington wants is to be dragged into a war with China by its defence guarantee to Taiwan, and it was quietly delighted to see Ma win the election. So was Beijing. No crisis here.

are, many aren’t – lose credibility and effectiveness when they’re handed down willy-nilly without thought to what comes afterward in terms of implementation, compliance and enforcement.

“There are a couple of things to consider right off the bat. One, we need more funding. And two, there needs to be more dialogue before this kind of legislation is enacted.”

To date, however, municipalities get neither. In essence, they’re forced to tax without representation.

The same is true of the steps needed to comply with the Ontarians with Disabilities Act (ODA), for instance, which forces a range of measures and costs on municipalities even where it makes no sense at all. This goes beyond elevators, ramps and sidewalk cuts in new construction, but extends to such things as providing alternative document formats despite zero demand in Woolwich. Still, everyone will be forced to pay for it.

“Without an appropriate level of funding from the province for the implementation of these standards, costs are directly supported by the local taxpayer,” Brenneman says in a report discussed at council this week.

Then there’s the issue of gravel pits, a topic with which the township has become intimately acquainted, and one that he hopes to speak about when meeting with provincial representatives next month.

The process is lengthy and costly, with the concerns of municipalities often swept aside by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ontario Municipal Board. The municipality does all the work, but gets little for its efforts aside from a great deal of political grief, as we’ve seen in debates here.

To make matters worse, municipalities receive only a pittance in revenues from gravel operations.

The cost-benefit analysis alone is reason enough to deny all applica-

tions. Aside from the process itself, gravel pits bring increased truck traffic that put residents at risk, create more wear-and-tear on the roads, bring environmental problems such as dust and noise, and threaten to despoil prime agricultural land and the accompanying vistas.

To offset the immediate costs, he suggests higher revenues for municipalities. In Woolwich’s case, aggregate extraction brings in about $37,000 a year in revenues. He contrasts that with the fact a single battle at the OMB could ring up $250,000 in legal costs.

Once a pit is approved, municipalities have little recourse in the event of problems. The industry is supposed to be self-regulating, but that system isn’t working. The Ministry of Natural Resources, which can make unilateral decisions about specific sites, typically sides with the operators, not the public it’s supposed to serve.

“The residents of Woolwich do not trust the system,” he notes.

What’s true of the aggregate process applies equally to the range of legislation without regard to what’s best for municipal residents and their pocketbooks. It will be difficult, however, to overcome a system where bureaucrats look to justify their positions by coming up with policy changes, regardless of whether or not changes are needed or make any sense at all.

“I understand why it happens,” said Brenneman.

But how optimistic is he that next month’s meetings will bear fruit?

“We can’t just sit back on the sidelines and not try,” he argues. “It’s always a tough hill to climb. Part of the municipal role is to be an advocate to the senior governments.”

The effort will be aided if other municipalities bring the same message to Queen’s Park, eventually swaying the government. But that’s not going to happen in short order.

So Taiwan’s best strategy is just to wait. Make deals on trade and investment, keep talking to Beijing to reduce the risk that some hothead will launch missiles at Taiwan, but don’t get into talks about reunification with a Communist-ruled China.

It’s a taxing time of year for couple’s new venture T

he venture is new, but there’s no time for easing into things at Taylor Tax Services in Elmira: tax season is only weeks away at this point.

Owners Shelly and Scott Taylor have both been dealing with income taxes and small business accounting for more than 25 years. The couple worked together at an accounting firm in Waterloo for many years when last year Shelly moved to work for Witmer Accounting in Elmira.

Denise Witmer, who owns and operates Witmer Accounting Consulting Ltd., has several different services she offers to her clients. A few months ago Witmer elected to sell the tax component of the business to the Taylors, giving them tax clients and a few bookkeeping clients.

“She started talking about selling her tax services business after realizing that her duties to her other

companies were taking a back seat during the busy two-month tax season,” said Shelly.

The Taylors saw the business as an opportunity to be able to be connected to the community a little better.

It is what we like to do, as crazy as it might be during the tax season .... Helping people with their businesses is what I do.

The Taylors also purchased the Witmer’s business phone

number as not to confuse former clients with a new phone number. They have relocated the business to 28 Pintail Dr. in Elmira where there is a locked mailbox outside for clients to drop off forms.

“Denise does not want to do taxes any more, and she did not want to get those calls: she made the phone number part of the purchase offer,” said Shelly. “It makes the transition easier for the clients with the phone number being the same.”

The business currently does income tax and tax return filing and also helps out some clients with their bookkeeping on a monthly and quarterly basis, filing of HST returns, payroll remittances and the like.

“We know that everyone has different concerns when it comes to their taxes.

The Taylors are expecting to be able to complete a tax return within 48 to 72 hours, depending on the amount of information provided by their clients.

Anyone wishing to bring their income tax forms to the Taylors can start to bring them now, said Scott, but Revenue Canada is not processing tax returns until Feb. 13 so anything that is sent in before that date just sits there.

“We have found that

Look to farming for health care cost relief Y

ou may have seen news clips this week about worried Canadian premiers searching for ways to try to bring runaway health care costs under control.

Well, here’s one suggestion for them: consider agriculture.

Agriculture produces food, and people can help stave off some chronic diseases with good food prepared properly. They can also consume functional foods – foods that have an additional health benefit. Those include much Ontario produce that is already high in beneficial nutrients, as well as some enhanced foods such as omega-3 milk and eggs. The idea is to get your nutritional supplements naturally, through food instead of pills.

Functional foods are the focus of a tool kit being assembled for dietitians by University of Guelph researchers. With support from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research, researchers are in the final stages of assembling a wide range of information that will help dietitians navigate their interactions with older adults (60-plus years old).

Judy Sheeshka, says this age group is being targeted because its members are open to dietary ideas that can help them maintain or improve their health.

Food can change things.

Take, for example, messages coming from this year’s North American lecture tour by international animal health and nutrition company Alltech, which swung by Waterloo last week. North American public relations manager Billy Frey underlined the need in his presentation to nourish the world, not just feed it.

He called on everyone in the agrifood business to let decision makers and the public know that through enhanced nutrition, agriculture can help improve people’s diets. What a great message to send to the premiers.

Many other efforts are afoot to make sure food is as good – and authentic – as it can be. On Monday, at a presentation at the University of Guelph, Prof. Bob Hanner talked about the many ways DNA barcoding is being used to identify new species. It’s having the added benefit of being able to determine a certain food’s authenticity too, to prevent mislabeling or fraud. Such advances are vital to healthy eating, and keeping health care costs in check. And they all begin with farmers committed to growing good food, and having a supportive environment in which to operate.

Canadian farmers are feeling good about rising to the challenge. Results of a farmer confidence survey released this week by Farm Credit Canada shows on-farm optimism at an all-time high. Ontario ranked second-highest (behind Saskatchewan) with 81 per cent of farmers saying based on their current outlook, their farm will be better off in five years.

That’s an amazing 10 per cent more than just a year ago.

What’s driving that optimism?

Farm Credit president Greg Stewart cites three reasons: the expectation of profitability, reduced debt and increasing global demand for food.

Major agriculture market drivers all are working in farmers’ favour – rising farmland values, higher commodity and red meat prices, and low interest rates.

Premiers, take note. Support an environment in which farmers have the flexibility to produce food, and you have a head start on addressing the health care cost crisis.

But farmers too need to be their own ambassadors and, as Alltech’s Frey insisted, tell everyone about agriculture – premiers, the pubic, media, you name it.

After all, no one can tell farmers’ story better than farmers.

“My personal pet peeve when it comes to income taxes are places that will do refunds on the spot.

They take so much money from people it is not funny,” said Scott.

“You don’t need to be paying guys like these the 10 per cent to get your refund back. When you figure out that interest rate, it is huge. Nobody should be doing that anymore: it is a rip off.”

Currently the business is open after 5 p.m. on weekdays. The Taylors believe that most people are working during the day and it is

hard to go see an accountant between 9 and 5; they plan to be open when most people will have the time to drop by their office.

In this digital age, the Taylors know they will be able to get back to clients in a timely manner using the phone, fax or email.

“Eventually our clientele will know we are not here in the daytime but we can return calls at lunch and after 5 p.m. and that is how our business will operate,” said Shelly.

A home-based business, the operation has all the professional touches in place.

“We have the proper security systems in place and every client we have can be assured of privacy and everything is confidential,” said Scott. “All the forms will be safe and secure and backed up exactly as it should be.”

hen her family moved to Glen Allan 18 years ago, Coral Loxton made a decision to be more social and to live life passionately by giving back to her community.

That’s why she formed a “meet up” group for women aged 40 and older: The Hens of the Glen.

The group now entertains 24 members of all different backgrounds and professions who meet on a monthly basis to enjoy coffee, lunch, or just talk about life.

“I moved to the Glen in 1994 and there were two churches there and about 50 houses, and apart from a quilting group which met once a month and a mother-and-tots meeting there was really nothing for local women to do or get together,” said Loxton. “I wanted to meet people; three other women I had met through the moms-and-tots group, who were grandmothers like me, decided to meet one day for lunch

and it started from there.”

During the monthly meeting the women pass along the loonie purse for donations that are collected and given to a charity every two or three months.

The group has given to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, breast cancer research, service dogs in Elmira, the Woolwich and Drayton food banks, local women’s shelters, the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), and Doctors Without Borders throughout the years.

This past Christmas the hens held a silent auction of items donated from the group and managed to raise $200 for the MCC. Even though the group call themselves the Hens of the Glen they are not all from the Glen now: there are quite a few ladies from Elmira and one or two from Kitchener.

Over the years the group has lost a few members, including two of its founders, Aileen Roden and Minerva Martin, who passed away

due to illness.

“They were great ladies and really helped to get this group off the ground.”

Members of the group range in age from 42 to 94 and we have no common denominator apart from the fact that they are women.

“We talk about everything, especially men – those of us that are lucky enough to still have our husbands with us, we talk about them.

I think because we do not have a lot in common or don’t belong to the same church it allows us to talk about anything and everything, except politics or religion,” said Loxton. “We will discuss the fate of the world, or things happening here in Elmira like why we don’t have a Canadian Tire in town, even what our grandchildren or great grandchildren are up to, it can be anything.

They are a great group of women.”

The group prefers to be known as the hens, a name that came from one of the members who joked that

the women were all just a bunch of old hens – the name stuck.

The women meet at restaurants across the region, including At the Crossroads (their favourite meeting place) as well as Anna Mae’s restaurant in Millbank and the Swiss Chalet in Waterloo. It can be difficult when there are 24 members showing up at a small restaurant because the group can easily take over the establishment, said Loxton.

To pick the meeting spot the group uses a birthday system: whoever has a birthday on the month they are meeting chooses the restaurant to meet at.

‘We are very democratic,” she laughed.

“It is very informal but we feel we are doing a little to help out charities and we are having some good times while we do that. We have built a nice community of women – a community does not have to be about houses.”

here is magic in the air at Elmira District Secondary School.

Drama teacher DJ Carroll has been teaching his Grade 11 students stage magic over the last few weeks and they’ve really taken to the challenge, performing tricks for their classmates in the hallways before, during and after school.

For their final project, the students will be holding a show for the public to show off the tricks they’ve learned.

There will be two shows, the first on Friday night at 7 p.m. for friends and family and the second on Monday afternoon starting at 1:30 p.m. for local grade schools to attend.

“The show basically gives them a chance to show off what they have learned over the course of a few weeks,” said Carroll. “It gives them a chance to perform for two different audiences and see how different ages react to different tricks.”

A tasty variation on the always-popular spaghetti dinner his dish is meant to inspire the everyday dinner table. Instead of spaghetti and meatballs, which everybody loves, we’ve take some ingredients from our pantry and market to put together a quick supper.

We’ve got so many great local butchers in the area making their own sausage. A quick trip to the market and we found sausage, leeks and mushrooms at this time of year. It’s not the time for a summery-fresh tomato sauce, but one that is rather rich in flavour – we get that by using fresh thyme.

San Marzano tomatoes come from Italy and are given the government guarantee stamp of approval. They are some of the best canned tomatoes to use when our local summer tomatoes are not available. A bit pricier for one can, but worth it for flavour.

Parmiggiano reggiano is good

By drizzling the whole dish with extra virgin olive oil after it is cooked, you get the flavour and aroma of the olive oil, plus the pasta dish as a whole becomes moister. Slice sausage into rounds; In a large skillet, heat a little canola oil over medium-high heat; When pan is nice and hot, add sausage and brown well on both sides; Remove sausage and set aside; remove excess fat from pan, but leave a good coating on the bottom

>>2 cloves garlic, chopped >>3-4 sprigs of fresh thyme, stem removed and chopped

>>1 can San Marzano tomatoes, or other good quality canned tomatoes

>>500g package of penne pasta >>Extra virgin olive oil and parmiggiano reggiano, to serve

The performance will also have some really big tricks that involve people disappearing and reappearing on the stage.

A practicing magician before he became a teacher, Carroll thought it would be fun to incorporate magic into his lessons.

The kids have been practicing for weeks perfecting not only their magical skills but the “magicians patter” that keep the audience involved.

“I tell the kids at the start of this unit that they will be learning how to do magic and they are under the oath not to reveal any of the secrets that I will tell them,” he said.

Carroll has already had four or five students take a real shine to the tricks and have progressed further on their own, taking up other tricks he did not teach them.

“Some of these kids are really good

at doing this kind of stuff and I think it is fantastic that every year I am setting up a generation of kids that are actually interested in doing magic.”

To learn a trick it takes time and patience, he explained. Some, like the selfworking tricks, take are few minutes to get the hang of, while others take days and weeks of practicing before the students have them perfected.

“The added bonus to any trick is putting your own personality into it, and these kids have come up with some great spots for the show,” said Carroll.

The show will feature each student performing various magic tricks and stunts with some students teaming up to perform group magic tricks.

“I really enjoy doing magic especially when you see the people’s faces after the reveal and they are so mystified by your trick. It is a real confidence booster and gives me pleasure to know that I have entertained someone,” said Karley Schaefer, one of Carroll’s students.

“My friends are always asking me how did you do that, but I know the oath and will not give away any of the secrets.”

Powerplay paces Kings to win over Listowel T

he Sugar Kings scored five powerplay goals last Sunday night en route to a 6-3 win over the visiting Listowel Cyclones.

The win was a welcome bounce back for the team following a disappointing 4-3 letdown in Brantford the previous night.

“I was very pleased with our effort right from the opening faceoff compared to the night before,” said head coach Dean DeSilva following the win over Listowel.

“I thought we had a lot more

jump and we had a lot more puck presence all over the ice, so I was very, very pleased with the way the guys responded.”

Michael Hasson led the way Jan. 15 against the Cyclones with two goals and three assists. Scott Nagy also chipped in a goal and three assists, while Riley Sonnenburg collected a pair of goals and an assist.

Nick Horrigan made 24 saves for the win.

Hasson got the scoring started early with his 13th goal of the campaign just 1:56 into the first period on the powerplay on a shot from a bad angle near the side boards. New Sugar King forward Brett Catto – acquired in a trade from Lis-

towel on Jan. 11 in return for defenceman Craig Johnson – collected the only assist.

Sonnenburg extended that lead to 2-0 with a powerplay goal of his own at 7:41. Hasson got the puck up to Nagy near the red line, who then made a nifty cross-ice pass to Sonnenburg coming down the wing and he snapped it past goaltender Michael Pesendorfer.

Listowel cut into that twogoal lead at 15:53 on a shot that squeezed between Horrigan’s pads and the post, but Andrew Smith got that one back just under three minutes later from Sonnenburg and Brett Priestap at 18:39 to make it 3-1.

ans of the Elmira Sugar Kings will find a familiar name atop the leading scorers of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, also known as the DEL. Elmira native Derek Hahn, who suited up for the Kings from 1995 to 1998, is currently leading the top-tier German hockey league scoring race with 16 goals and 40 points in 36 games, a three point cushion over Kai Hospelt.

“I think the reason for my success this season is that I am playing on a very strong team this year,” said Hahn, who currently plays for the Eishockey-und-Rollschuh club (ERC) club which is located in Ingolstadt, Germany.

The team is currently third in the 14-team league with 66 points, just four behind the co-leaders from Berlin and Mannheim.

Hahn, 34, is a centre on the team and he credits some of

his success to winger Thomas Greilinger, who is currently tied for 12th in league scoring with 12 goals and 32 points.

“He is a very good offensive player, and my line has had good chemistry,” said Hahn.

The Canadian is in his first season on the team but is no stranger to the DEL as this is his fifth season playing in the league. He suited up for the Straubing Tigers last season, but suffered an inju-

ry to his hand that saw him tear several ligaments and required pins to be put into his thumb to help it heal.

That injury held him out of the lineup for 13 games but he still managed 39 points in 39 games.

Prior to last season he played for the now-defunct Frankfort Lions for three years, recording 131 points in 149 games.

Scars on ice: cautionary tales as ice-fishing season gets rolling T

he ice fishing season is upon us like a politician on an open mic.

Yet in some areas, there have been delays due to a rare combination of unseasonable weather and a good amount of common sense.

Where I live, ice conditions are just now as they should be on most lakes – but, locally, two snowmobiles and one truck went through the ice before that was the case. Luckily, no one was hurt – just frightened. To look on the bright side, this is good for the underwear industry.

As a veteran outdoorsman, you’d like to think that this type of incident has no affect on you. But, in fact, it does. I actually think about these things a lot before I step out on the ice. The good news is that my thoughts manifest themselves in subtle ways.

For instance, I can’t help but walk by a mirror these days without asking myself if my weight approaches that of a snowmobile. Though I suspect I’m a long way off, this more than anything has kept me from going back for seconds at every meal – or putting on a yellow parka and a set of skis.

The next thing you do is evaluate your fishing buddies and then subtly suggest righteous causes that might induce some of the larger

Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve Galea ones to go on hunger strikes. It is at this point that you discover that only skinny folks, who don’t like food in the first place, go on hunger strikes. The big ones just give money to the cause.

Of course, asking your fishing buddies to lose weight is not sound thinking – not when you could ask them to walk ahead of you to test ice thickness.

Don’t actually ask this, by the way.

Just lag behind pretending to tie your shoelaces – every 20 yards.

Once you get out on the ice you do things a little differently, too.

For one thing, you don’t run to a line that has a fish on unless it is yours – instead you wait for that angler to get there and then yell out something sensitive, supportive and helpful like, “If you go through, throw me your rod. We don’t want your sacrifice to be in vain!”

You also pay a little more attention to the sounds the ice makes at times like this. The various warping, heaving and settling noises that

were once winter music now actually sound a bit more insidious. So, you jump a lot more at the noises, which also worries you since you wonder what will happen when you hit the ice on the landing.

I’m not saying any of this is warranted, because it’s not, especially if you test the ice as you go, know the areas to avoid and leave your vehicle on shore in the early season.

All I’m saying is that it takes a few outings before these feelings leave you entirely and you get back to

your old level of comfort on the ice.

I should also mention that this, more than anything, this is why I avoid catching really heavy fish. It’s not about a lack of skill so much as a talent for safety.

Fortunately, as winter progresses the ice gets safer and safer in most areas. This doesn’t mean you should throw out caution, however; you should never do that on the ice. It just means that you need not worry so much. And that seconds at the dinner table are back on the menu.

He and wife Lacey have a 21-month-old daughter named Addison, with another due in June. Hahn said he also tries to return to Canada in the summer, and was most recently in the country this past June to visit his parents.

With 16 games left on the schedule, Hahn knows any-

thing can happen especially after an injury derailed his season last year, and he says he doesn’t know what the future holds for him or his family once his career is done.

“I would like to play hockey for a little longer,” he said, noting he hopes to fall back on his business degree when his retirement finally comes.

“But as of right now, I have no idea what I will be doing when I am done playing.”

aged to shake off that injury and return to the high level of hockey he and his fans in Elmira are accustomed to.

Hahn joined the Kings in the 1995-96 season and played for the team for three seasons. The team was a finalist for the Sutherland Cup in his first year, and captured the Ontario title in 1997. He was named co-playoff MVP with Mike McKinnon, and also eclipsed the 100-point plateau during the regular season.

In 147 career games with the Kings, Hahn scored 64 goals and collected 110 assists, good for 15th on the team’s all-time list. He also holds the team record for most career playoff goals (35), assists (60), and points (95), and he said that winning the Cup that season was his fondest memory of his time spent with the Kings.

From Elmira, Hahn travelled to the Rochester Institute of Technology where he played for three seasons while collecting a degree in business management.

From there, he played a pair of games for the Elmira Jackals of the United Hockey League, one game for the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies of the East Coast Hockey League, then four

full seasons with the Amarillo Gorillas of the Central Hockey League, where he took rookie of the year honours in 2003 and the MVP title in 2007 when he scored 114 points in 67 games.

Hahn then moved overseas and began his European career playing for Rodovre in Denmark, before moving on to Germany. He also helped team Canada capture the Deutschland Cup in Novem-

> Harnock named to Paralympics basketball squad Fourteen women have been named to the preliminary roster of the 2012 women’s Paralympic basketball team that will represent Canada at the upcoming London summer games.

Among those chosen is Elmira native Katie Harnock.

The 14 women were selected from a pool of athletes who attended a weeklong selection camp from Jan. 9 to 13 in Las Vegas. This will be Harnock’s second time representing her country at the games. She’ll be looking to better a disappointing fifthplace finish in 2008 in Beijing.

She also won gold at the World Championships in 2006 and was a member of the silver medal winning team at the Parapan American Games held in Guadalajara, Mexico from Nov. 13-19, 2011.

The team last medalled at the Paralympics in 2004 where they took home bronze, their fourth consecutive Paralympic podium finish. The 2012 women’s roster includes 11 returning players, six of who have Paralympic experience, and the roster still needs to be trimmed to 12 before competing in London.

Another Elmira resident, Corin Metzger, was also at the selection camp in Las Vegas but was not chosen for the team. She suited up for Canada at the inaugural Women’s U25 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships held last July at Brock University, where Canada finished fourth.

In the second period the teams traded goals as Listowel’s Kyle Ellis scored a powerplay goal at 4:28, and Nagy responded at 12:54 with another Elmira powerplay goal, assisted

by Hasson and Lukas Baleshta to make it 4-2.

The Kings put any hopes of a comeback to bed with a dominating third in which they outshot Listowel 20-7 and scored twice more with the extra man.

Sonnenburg scored his second of the game just 32 seconds into the period from Hasson and Nagy when he onetimed a rebound off Pesendorfer’s left pad into the top of the net for a 5-2 lead, and after a powerplay goal for the Cyclones made it 5-3, Hasson scored the Kings fifth powerplay goal of the evening at 13:39 from Nagy and Smith for the 6-3 final.

The Kings have a new strategy while on the powerplay, opting to overload their first unit with five forwards – Nagy and Hasson on the points, and Sonnenburg, Baleshta and Smith down low.

The change was made after DeSilva felt his younger defenceman were too reluctant to shoot the puck on the powerplay, and he feels the extra experience from those five forwards should help.

“We did that earlier in the year and we thought that we would go back to that. It’s the experience factor and it’s giving some of our younger defenceman an opportunity to watch,” said DeSilva.

“We have a lot of experience up front and a lot of talented forwards so we have to take advantage of that and get them out there when we can.”

The game also featured the return of all star defenceman Craig Johnson to Elmira for the first time since he was traded to the Cyclones last week in return for Brett Catto.

“We have an older team and a team that we feel can make a long run in the playoffs, and Brett brings that experience and that depth.”

Catto was selected by the Belleville Bulls in the 2008 OHL priority draft and at 19 years of age he still has one year of eligibility left in the league. Wideman happy, surprised by call to NHL All-Star game James Jackson

ou can add Dennis Wideman’s name to the list of people surprised by his inclusion in the NHL All-Star game next weekend in Ottawa.

The Washington Capitals defenceman and former Elmira Sugar King got the call Jan. 12 from Capitals general manager George McPhee, and his first thought was that he had been traded.

“I didn’t know that the selections were being made that day, and whenever you get a call from the GM it usually has something to do with [a trade],” laughed Wideman during a phone interview

Elmira-native Dennis Wideman has parlayed his strong start to the NHL season into a call to the NHL AllStar game in Ottawa.

The call was to inform the 28-year-old Elmira native that he had been chosen to play in his first all-star game alongside his Capitals teammate Alexander Ovechkin and 34 others players from across the league.

As of Thursday, Wideman is ranked fifth in the NHL scoring by defenceman with 8 goals and 32 points in 45 games for the Capitals. His career high is 13 goals and 50 points, established during the 2007/2008 season when he was a member of the Boston Bruins.

“Obviously I’m pretty excited,” said Wideman about being named to the team.

it’s a lot more exciting going for the first time.”

Wideman credits his success this year to the ability of his teammates – including Ovechkin and highscoring centre Niklas Backstrom – to put the puck in the net. Washington is averaging almost 3 goals per game this season, ninth in the league, and Wideman has earned a spot on the team’s top powerplay unit.

“We score a lot of goals, so I think since we’re scoring goals I’m going to get points.”

Wideman has managed to maintain some consistency this season despite the fact that it’s been an up-and-down year for the team as a whole. The Capitals started 7-0 – a franchise record for consecutive wins to begin a season – but slumped badly in November, and after losing six of eight towards the end

of the month, management fired head coach Bruce Boudreau.

Boudreau’s replacement, Dale Hunter, appears to have righted the ship and the Capitals were seeded third in the Eastern Conference, 10 points behind the New York Rangers, after a win Wednesday.

Wideman is confident the team will continue to improve, and challenge for the top spot in the east once again.

“There was a bit of a learning curve there [with Dale Hunter], and we started putting a little pressure on ourselves which I think we struggled with,” he said.

“I think we’re getting better but there is still a lot of work to be done and a long season left.”

Under the new allstar format the teams will be chosen by a pair of team captains, Zdeno Chara of the Bruins and Daniel Al-

fredsson of the Ottawa Senators.

As a result Wideman doesn’t know who he will be paired with yet on defence, and said it doesn’t matter too much to him – but there is one player he would have liked to have the opportunity to play with.

“I think if Nick Lidstrom was going I’d like to play with him once. That would have been pretty good,” he said.

Lidstrom was voted into the game for the 13th time in his career this season, but has elected to skip it. Wideman also said he didn’t know which skills competition events he will participate in, saying “hopefully nothing too big.”

The NHL super skills competition is set for Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. and the game is scheduled for Jan. 29 at 4 p.m. at Scotiabank Place, the home of the Senators.

“When I get back I’m going to take the pictures into the OHA office. It was so blatant.”

This past week the Jacks have been trying to push that game from their mind in preparation for their matchup against the St. George Dukes at home last night (Friday). The Dukes were only one point behind Wellesley in the standings heading into the match, but results were not available before press.

On Sunday, the Jacks will look for some retribution against the Hawks when Hagersville arrives in Wellesley for a match on Sunday afternoon. The puck drops at 3 p.m.

he Wellesley Applejacks had more than just their opponents to contend with when they made the trip down to Hagersville last Saturday night to take on the Hawks.

The Jacks fell 7-4 in that game, but head coach Kevin Fitzpatrick said much of the blame for the loss fell on the referees.

“I don’t ever complain about refereeing, but they were completely intimidated down there,” said Fitzpatrick “The score wasn’t indicative of the game; we out-chanced them and they’re just a dirty hockey team.”

Hagersville took a 1-0 lead to the dressing room after the first period on a goal by Aleck Boyd at 9:48, but the Hawks exploded in the second for four unanswered goals in the first 12:32 to take a stranglehold on the match.

Fitzpatrick took particular exception with the Hawks second goal, scored at 1:25 of the second, and he said that a Hagersville player collided with Jacks goaltender Josh Heer, forcing him out of the net and leading to the goal.

Another issue for Fitzpatrick was when at the start of the third M&T Business Card Ad:Layout 1 the Hawks’ Kyle Par-

sons and the Jacks’ Josh Herd got into a fight. Fitzpatrick alleges that the Hagersville player ripped off Herd’s helmet and started hitting him over the head with it.

“We’re lucky he didn’t have a concussion,” Fitzpatrick said.

“Their coach was screaming all sorts of obscenities at [the referee] and at our players, and nothing was done.”

Following that fight the Jacks finally pushed back and tallied four unanswered goals to make the score 5-4.

Tyler Eckert scored at 1:56 from Reid Denstedt and Rob Hinschberger, Mitch Metzer got a shorthanded goal just seconds later from Brett Vickers, Matt Soveregn made it 5-3 at 4:17 from Denstedt, and Metzger scored his second of the period on the powerplay at 6:55 to make it a 5-4 hockey game.

Yet Fitzpatrick said the referees again were intimidated by the Hagersville bench, and called four straight penalties against Wellesley, allowing the Hawks to score on the powerplay at 11:29 to take a 6-4 lead.

“An awful lot of work has gone into it,” he said of the tribute show. “I’m a perfectionist to a fault.”

lues-rock legend Stevie Ray Vaughan launched a thousand guys into guitar shops, so captivating was his style.

Though he died more than two decades ago, his influence can be seen even in young blues players today.

Few of his acolytes likely have the same dedication as Dave Ryan, who’s spent the last decade getting the details just right as the front man of a Toronto-based tribute band, The Stevie Ray Vaughan Experience, which plays tonight (Saturday) at the Central Tavern in Elmira.

A guitar player for more than 30 years, including a stint in a Van Halen tribute band, Ryan had an epiphany about a decade ago when he saw Vaughan’s “Live at the El Mocambo,” a DVD released in 1999 featuring a 1983 concert at the storied Toronto venue.

Vaughan and Double Trouble tributes. Since taking to the stage in 2008, they’ve been working at getting to the Vegas and Atlantic City circuits.

“It’s fun. It’s going places,” said Ryan of the act. “It’s been very challenging, but rewarding.

“I joke with my friends that I’m going to the Stevie Ray Vaughan school of blues. I’m probably at a masters’ level, and I’m going for my Ph.D.” To that end, he said he’s always pushing himself to get better. A six-second hook in the song Texas Flood from that 1983 concert probably

His hats are made by the same Texas hatter that made Vaughan’s. His guitars are replicas of those famously emblazoned with the initials SRV. And even the large blue peacock tattooed on Vaughan’s chest has a doppelganger on Ryan’s chest.

At its heart, however, his efforts are all about the playing, trying to replicate the skill that puts Vaughan on just about everybody’s list of the top 15 or 20 guitarists ever to pick up the instrument.

The time and effort have propelled Ryan and his bandmates to the highest level of Stevie Ray

Just ask Howard Altschule, TV meteorologist in Albany, New York, who became fascinated with weather forensics, as told to Michael Rosenwald for “Discover” magazine. On Jan. 24, 2002, a double murder was committed in a Troy, New York apartment and although police found the perpetrator’s blood, years went by before they had a DNA match to a Michael Mosley. When questioned why his blood was in the apartment, Mosley answered, “I was snowboarding with my kid, fell on a rock and cut my hand.

Then I went to the apartment, found the two dead bodies and got so nervous I ran away.”

SAMIS, Christina Marion (nee Newstead) It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Christina on Monday, January 9, 2012 in her 90th year. Beloved wife of the late Jack Elwood Samis (2005). Loving and caring mother of Paul and Mary Elizabeth Samis of R.R. # 1 Elmira and Reginald and Liz Samis of R.R. # 2 Alma. A grandmother who loved beyond all measure her precious grandchildren; David and Stephanie Samis of Kitchener, Mark and Lori Samis of Elmira, John and Elaine Samis of Guelph, Emily and Stacey Samis of Hamilton and Cynthia and Adam Deen of Kenilworth. Cherished great grandmother of Cody Deen. She will be missed by her nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased by her beloved son Wayne in 1959 at the age of 15. Christina was the only child of the late Earl and Leila (Fisk) Newstead and grew up on the Newstead homestead on the 12th of Maryborough Township. Christina will be remembered for her love of music. She was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church choir and served as choir director and organist for the Church beginning in 1949 and continuing for many years. She was an avid member of the Women’s Missionary Society of Knox Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Drayton Women’s Institute. Christina has been an active resident of Chateau Gardens in Elmira and has enjoyed her stay there for the past 6 years. The family received friends at the Heritage Funeral Home, Drayton on Wednesday, January 11, 2012. where the Funeral Service was be conducted by Rev. Linda Bell in the Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Interment Drayton Cemetery.

Brother-in-law of Wilma Klein of Orillia, Bernice Klein of Kitchener and Doris Klein of Elmira. Also lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by three sisters Edna Haffner, Dora Westfall and Della Swartz, three brothers George, Roy and Donald Klein, and by his parents John and Mary (Franklin) Klein. Stan worked at Procast Foundries for 45 years. He loved gardening, bowling, baseball and horseshoes. Papa will be greatly missed by his four-legged friends Pepper, Rylie and Ruby. Friends and relatives called at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira on Wednesday, January 18th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Parish prayers were offered in the funeral home on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Funeral mass was celebrated on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. Teresa of Avila RC Church, Elmira.
