axes will increase 5.25 per cent in Woolwich this year, a hit of about $31.41 on the average home with an assessed value of
$254,000. Half of that amount represents a special levy to fund infrastructure projects such as road paving and bridge repairs. A good chunk of the extra money will be
spent on the township’s growing staff complement rather than on services to the public. While councillors expressed some concerns, they ultimately passed the 2012 budget with
those spending priorities in place. Plans to hire an engineering technologist at an estimated salary of $70,000 plus another $30,000 to support generous benefits would
eat up 57 per cent of the $175,000 expected to be raised by the 2.5 per cent infrastructure levy – each one percentage point in tax increase represents $71,000.
