ellesley councillors formally adopted the 2012 budget this week, but were split over the two per cent tax hike. The three in favour, however, outnumbered the two pushing for a slightly larger increase in order to boost the township’s reserve funds.

Councillors Jim Olender and Herb Neher, along with Mayor Ross Kelterborn voted in favour of the budget, while Councillors Shelley Wagner and Paul Hergott were opposed.

The two per cent hike adds $21 to the township portion of the property tax bill of an average home assessed at $254,000.

“We went back and forth, back and forth. It was a long process for everybody and it’s a really difficult process but we have to consider the times that we’re dealing with,” said Neher prior to the budget being passed.

The trained theatre performer and expert mask-maker provided a brief and informative lecture about the myriad uses of masks in cultures throughout the world. He also demonstrated the power of transformation by wearing about a dozen different masks from the wall behind him and assuming the emo-

tional or physical state expressed in each face.

“People use masks in religious ceremonies, they’re used in communal rituals to help make the crops grow, they’re used to bless new homes, or to get rid of evil spirits. They’re used when old people die, or when young people are born,” Faust explained to the students and teachers.

understanding body language to communicate how you feel, and offered a unique insight into the many masks we wear daily.

“We all use body language all day every day, whether we’re thinking about it or not our bodies say a lot about how we’re feeling,” he said.

“Sometimes body language speaks louder than our spoken language. What are you going to believe, what I say or what I do?”

The actor was very engaging with students, coming out into the crowd at various points to connect with them one-on-one, and using a wide range of voices and accents to really get into character. Faust was invited to the school as part of the dramatic arts curriculum, and he was recommended by the school’s French and drama teacher Mary Baldasaro, who saw Faust perform back in September.

“I knew that it would fit well with the drama curriculum, but it was very entertaining as well for students from kindergarten to Grade 8 and that is not an easy

She said the topic of masks is also relevant to the history curriculum of older grades, which touches on the importance of masks to First Nations cultures in Canada.

Faust makes all the masks himself using a variety of materials, including plaster, paper and wood. He has travelled the world with seven other performers as

part of the Faustwork Mask Theatre, which he founded in 1983. In that time he has created more than 300 different masks and performed in venues from the Sydney Opera House in Australia to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

As a native of New Orleans – home of Mardi Gras, one of the biggest street festivals in the world – he has a deep-rooted passion

for informing others about the importance of masks in our society.

“If you want to learn about a country, just Google the name and ‘masks’: ‘China masks,’ ‘India masks,’ ‘Brazil masks’ – you can learn a lot about history and cultures when you see them in their masks,” Faust said.

Everybody did their due diligence in revisiting their individual budgets and everyone has come up with some way, some means, of getting it down.”

The final budget bears little resemblance to the initial draft budget proposed by staff back on Jan. 24, which requested a 6.41 per cent tax increase.

Councillors and staff went through

that budget line by line, leaving virtually nothing untouched.

In total $119,286.65 was slashed before the end of the day, ranging from health and safety expenditures to clothing allowances for township employees. However, the majority of cuts came from reserve funds, which made up $79,000 – or two-thirds – of the budget reductions, including $50,000 from the future roads fund reserve, and $20,000 from recreation re-

serves.

For councillors Hergott and Wagner, chairs of the road and bridge committee and the recreation committee respectively, sacrificing the township’s future reserves to keep taxes lower in 2012 was something they could not support.

“We’re going to pay for it in the long run,” said Hergott after the meeting, adding he would have preferred a tax increase of about three per cent.

“We took from our

reserves and we didn’t rebuild them,” added Wagner. “To me that was very, very important.”

Wagner also said she would have liked to have seen a tax increase between 2.5 and three per cent, which would have allowed the township to be more responsible with managing its reserve funds.

The two per cent tax increase will deliver an extra $68,550.47 to township coffers, bringing the total tax levy in 2012 to $3,637,714.

lmira’s bandstand, a heritage fixture in Gore Park, is in need of a major overhaul.

To that end, Woolwich Township has launched a community fundraising drive to

help restore the structure. Residents are encouraged to contribute to the effort.

Council has earmarked some $80,000 to tackle the basic structural deficiencies – much of the wood is rotting and needs

to be replaced, as do the existing asbestos shingles. More extensive restoration work could be done if the community gets behind the project, however, prompting Coun.

Her idea was quickly endorsed by her council colleagues meeting Feb. 21, with Coun. Allan Poffenroth suggesting service clubs be enlisted to help.

Serial novelist Libraries online with a different kind of book HOW’S THAT STORY GO? Guelph author Josh Martin is in the midst of writing an online mystery novel where each cliffhanger ending to a chapter is resolved by real-world events. The book is free online, and passwords for bonus material are available at 10 Waterloo Region libraries.

magine a book where even the author didn’t know how it would end.

That is the case for the new online book Run, written by Guelph author Josh Martin who posts a new chapter online at his website, www.plothinge.com, about a character named Will who is being pursued by a shadowy character named The Man in Charge.

At the end of every chapter readers are left at a cliffhanger ending which can go one of two ways, based on the outcome of real-world events. For example, at the end of the prologue chapter readers are left with the plot able to go in a couple directions, and whether or not Wiarton Willie saw his shadow on Groundhog Day on Feb. 2 decided which of those directions the story took.

“I think there’s a neat layer to this story where the line between the virtual story and the real world blur,” said Martin.

In addition to the chapters, Martin is also making

bonus material available online via password-protected pages. These pages will help answer some of the reader’s burning questions about the plot, such as why Will is on the run.

The author has partnered with 10 libraries in Waterloo Region and others across the country, and they have agreed to post the passwords on their bulletin boards for readers to discover.

“I’m from the area, so I have some connections in this community. I went to school at Laurier, so I decided that I wanted to partner up with the libraries here in this area, and also across Canada.”

The author says that he was inspired by the Choose Your Own Adventure books that he read as a child, where the plot of the story hinged on decisions that the reader made, and he said he wanted to take it one step further by incorporating real-world events to add another layer of complexity and realism to the tale.

It also makes it more fun for him as a writer, since he

has no idea how the story will unfold over its 25-chapter run, which wraps up in June.

“While I have a sense of the general narrative and who the characters are and what their motivations are, even I don’t know from one week to the next exactly where the story is going to go and how it’s going to unfold.”

He also said that he hopes readers will gain a renewed interest in real-world events as they want to learn how each cliffhanger will be resolved.

The chapters are only about 1,000 words long, relatively short compared to other books, and Martin said he consciously chose

to keep it short to make it easier to read online, and to help keep readers engaged.

“It takes five minutes or so to read, and that’s what I wanted to make sure happened to ensure it was quick and easy but also suspenseful to keep the readers coming back each week.”

New chapters for Run are posted every Thursday.

Participation is free, with readers able to subscribe to receive email notifications when the new chapter is posted. Martin also plans to publish the final story as an e-book, complete with alternate chapters that never make it to the final story, and a host of other extra material. >> Budget passes with tax hike intact It was all over in less than a minute: Woolwich councillors approved a tax increase of 5.25 per cent, large increases in water and sewer charges and new staff positions in the 2012 budget without blinking an eye.

The formal adoption of the budget, the culmination of months of work, passed unanimously Tuesday night without discussion.

The 5.25 per cent tax hike represents a hit of about $31.41 on the average home with an assessed value of $254,000. Almost half of that amount is earmarked for a special levy to fund infrastructure projects such as road paving and bridge repairs.

Overall, the township will spend $12.7 million this year, generating revenues of $5.9 million, for a net operating deficit of $6.8 million that will be covered by taxes.

At the same time, Woolwich intends to spend some $8.4 million on capital projects, mostly on roads and bridges.

>> Boardroom is now Dodie Hummel Room A meeting room in the former Elmira arena bore the name of Dodie Hummel, a recognition of her leadership role in the 1988 fundraising drive to rehabilitate the building, including replacing the roof. The name has been in limbo, however, since the construction of the Woolwich Memorial Centre and subsequent demolition of the old arena.

While the township had planned to put her name on one of the meeting rooms at the WMC, naming rights fell first to financial supporters. This week, councillors decided the township administration building would be a more suitable place to once again honour the name, opting to christen the council boardroom as the Dodie Hummel Room in her honour.

In a related matter, Mayor Todd Cowan suggested the township look at installing explanatory signs or plaques in cases where facilities have been named after individuals in order to inform the public of the history behind the name.

>> Tree of light benefits agencies The Wellesley Lions recently donated a total of $5,287, the proceeds of the group’s Tree of Lights fundraising program, to a pair of local charitable agencies, Community Care Concepts and Community Action Program for Children.

The money was raised through the sale of bulbs for the tree at $5 apiece.

Safety Village accepting nominations for Children’s Hero Awards woman was driving from Guelph to Elmira when she noticed a beige GMC truck with a black cap following her. The driver of the truck, described as a white male between the ages of 20 and 40 years old and wearing a black baseball cap, was tailgating her and waving at her. The female driver became nervous and started driving randomly around Elmira, with the driver of the truck following. Police continue to investigate.

Plan would see two building lots for Bloomingdale Owners look to divvy up parcels of land to allow family to build new homes

large residential property and a longvacant piece of land abutting it could soon provide space for three homes for the Zenger family of Bloomingdale.

The plan, the subject of a public meeting at Woolwich council Tuesday night, would see the lands owned by Fred and Carl Zenger reworked to form three building lots fronting on River Street.

The first step, discussed at this week’s

planning meeting, calls for the rezoning of the land. If approved, severances would be required to portion up the land appropriately and to provide driveways leading back to the road.

Currently, a home owned by Fred Zenger sits on a 2.7-acre property at 55 River St. Immediately to the east is a one-acre landlocked property owned by Carl Zenger. The goal is to create three separate parcels: the original home on 1.2 acres, a new lot to the south at

1.24 acres and a third lot made up mostly of the vacant land (1.16 acres), including a strip that provides access to and frontage on River Street.

Fred Zenger said the two new building lots would be used for homes for two of his four adult children.

The property is where he has spent most of his own life, having been purchased by his parents some 70 years ago.

The family was represented by IBI Group planner Natalie Hard-

acre, who said development of the sites would maintain as many as possible of the natural elements – mature

trees, hedgerows – in order to provide screening from other homes in the area.

tended the meeting to express concerns about drainage, the impact on well water – there’s no municipal services; all of the homes are on wells and septic systems – and the introduction of two new driveways leading to River Street.

Those concerns would be taken into consideration when planning staff review the application, said director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley, noting he would be back at a future date with a report for council.

Parking restrictions coming to Conestogo ball diamond Steve Kannon

lready at a premium, parking around the park and ball diamond in Conestogo just got scarcer, as Woolwich this week prohibited parking on the west Side of Evening Star Lane, south of Elgin Street.

Approved Tuesday night by council, the move effectively rules out parking along the entire side of Conestogo Community Park.

The decision comes despite the opposition from a couple of neigh-

bours who see the move as overkill. The township, however, sees the prohibition as a way to reduce damage to the grass and to reduce the chance of cars being struck by errant baseballs.

Lisa MacDonald of the Conestogo Rec. Association said the group last year had four complaints about balls striking cars.

cillor Murray Martin, a Conestogo resident who tends to the park and fields, told her damage makes maintenance more problematic.

But Evening Star Lane resident Grant Schwartz called the parking restrictions “a whole lot of hassle” for an issue that only occurs three or four times a year when there’s a ball tournament at the diamond.

“There doesn’t seem to be a problem in my eyes,” he told councillors, noting he and his neighbours will lose

on-street parking options.

That sentiment was echoed by neighbour Opal Partridge, who argued the current parking arrangement hasn’t been an issue in the three years she’s lived on the street.

In fact, cars are probably safer from stray balls closer to the park fence than on the east side or in the driveways, she argued, adding her own windshield was broken as the car sat in front of her home.

Parking restrictions, added Partridge, would

be an inconvenience to the players, who are mostly courteous and considerate.

Only Mayor Todd Cowan seemed swayed by the neighbours, however – his was the lone dissenting vote in the 3-1 decision.

He questioned why the township would restrict on-street parking when it has to rely on a neighbouring commercial business – Brody Enterprises, which allows the use of its lot – to deal with overflow parking. The nearby township works yard

For Coun. Mark Bauman, the decision to support the parking prohibition came down to safety, as he argued cars alongside the park posed a potential hazard if kids darted out between them and into the roadway.

The plan is to post a series of “No Parking Any Time” signs along the stretch road, which would also prevent overnight parking as well as park-related use.

New liquor licensing in place for arena as Kings head into playoffs Steve Kannon

he champagne will have to wait until the cup is in place, but fans will be able to enjoy a beverage while watching the Kings when the playoffs start next week.

In a deal approved this week by Woolwich council, about half of the Dan Snyder Arena will be licensed for the sale and consumption of alcohol. Where previously beer and liquor were served only in a small area surrounding the hockey team’s Blue Line Club, the liquor licence will cover seating on the west side of the arena, sections A through H. Continuing an arrangement that started last weekend, the Kings will be using the upstairs concession area to sell liquor. The club is also in discussions with the township about running the concession stand, including food sales, on a full-time basis starting next season.

is a pilot project, to be reviewed at the end of the season, said director of recreation and facilities Karen Makela, noting the Junior B organization is picking up the costs.

There is also a host of extra work involved, as the Kings are responsible for having at least six trained volunteers, including security personnel, in place every time the Blue Line Club is operating. They’ll also have to clean up after any mess left in the stands.

Bonnie Bryant’s concerns about ensuring minors don’t have access to alcohol, Makela explained that a minimum of four security people will be checking identification and watching for problems.

Although the new arrangement comes with a lot of extra work, team president Jeff Seddon said it’s being done as a service for the fans.

“There are a lot of people who enjoy a beverage, and now they can do that and watch the game,” he said, explaining that previous-

ly the licenced area did not offer a view of the ice surface. “From the fan standpoint, the new way works well.”

As well, recent changes to provincial liquor laws allow the Kings to keep the supplies on site rather than having to remove them from the premises after each game. The team can also buy 10 special occasion permits at a time instead of having to do so before each home game.

“It’s a lot more convenient, and a lot more economical.”

While not a big money-maker for the team, the Blue Line Club is a value-added service for the fans.

“Over the course of the season, it’s a fundraiser. On any given night, it’s hit and miss, but it’s convenient for the fans and it adds to the experience,” said Seddon.

Beyond helping the Kings, the new deal is good for patrons of the Woolwich Memorial Centre, said Mayor Todd Cowan in supporting the changes, as the licensing would be applicable for other events.

Former foundry site continues to idle in Elmira core Property owner seeking extension of deal that would waive development charges Steve Kannon

acant for almost a decade, a former industrial site in Elmira’s core is no closer to being developed, says its owner, who was before Woolwich council this week seeking a renewal of the township’s offer to exempt the site from development charges.

Blaze Properties have been trying to develop the former Procast Foundries site at 7 Memorial Ave. since 2004. The foundry itself closed its doors in October 2002, with the building subsequently demolished.

The owner had hoped

to build residential townhouses on the 1.36acre property, but the township is calling for commercial development there, in keeping with surrounding uses.

But there’s been no demand in Elmira.

“I don’t think there’s any question that there would be residential demand there ... but not for commercial,” said commercial realtor Dietmar Sommerfeld of CBRE, who has listed the property since December 2004.

The site was under consideration for the Shoppers Drug Mart move, which ultimately ended up at the corner

of Arthur and Church streets, and a Tim Hortons restaurant. Sommerfeld has talked to many of the existing Elmira businesses about relocating to the vacant site, to no avail.

He argued that the lack of demand is apparent in the dearth of commercial development in downtown Elmira. Outside of the drugstore’s move and the reworking of the Mac’s convenience store property now underway, there’s been little commercial activity in the last decade.

“We’ve talked to many people. Nothing’s materialized.”

Tough medicine needed for Ontario’s finances, says Harris James Jackson

itchener-Conestoga MPP Michael Harris says that Don Drummond’s two-volume, 362-recommendation report on Ontario’s economic health, released Feb. 15, is an indication of how badly the Liberal government is failing Ontarians.

“This is basically a report card on the McGuinty government that shows Ontarians basically we’ve got 362 failing grades,” said Harris in an interview earlier this week.

The 688-page report by the former TD economist covers a wide range of methods to curb provincial spending, from big-ticket items like education and health care, to wholesale changes in government programs.

The report exposed a Liberal spending crisis more severe than anything previously disclosed, requiring immediate action to start reversing the damage, and straight talk from political leaders, said Harris.

“We’ve got a $16 billion deficit, a massive $252 billion debt, and it’s predicted that if we sit back and continue on the path we’re on, we’ll see a $400 billion

debt by 2017-2018.

“We can’t continue down this path.”

At nearly $10 billion, servicing the provincial debt is the thirdhighest cost in Ontario, after health care spending and education, which is unsustainable, said Harris, adding that there are going to be some tough choices that need to be made in the future – all the result of eight years of out-of-control spending by the Liberals.

“We need to eliminate red tape, we need to reduce taxes on the job creators, we need affordable energy, and we need to be open for business here in Ontario,” said Harris.

He also said that the PC government has proposed a full publicservice wage freeze across the province,

and the Liberals have said they would consider that move, but on a voluntary basis.

“Absolutely not, are you kidding me?”

In light of the ongoing ORNGE scandal and the eHealth waste that tax payers have endured, Harris compared the McGuinty government trying to figure a way out of the economic mess to Jack the Ripper investigating the scene of the murder.

“Dalton McGuinty got us into this hole, he had the shovel that dug it. We have a $16 billion deficit, and this is the guy who got us there, and he doesn’t have the stomach to get us out.”

The Conservatives are concerned that if the Liberals are unable to make the difficult spending cuts that they say are necessary to get Ontario’s finances back in order, taxpayers are in for a rude awakening. “[The Liberals] only option is tax and spend, they don’t know any other way, and we are afraid of the fact that he will look at new taxes and new fees, and right now is not the time to introduce new taxes and fees and to penalize the job creators.”

Even the township’s offer to waive some $56,000 in development charges has done nothing to encourage an infilling project there.

Still, Blaze would like to keep that offer on the table. The deal is set to expire, much to the chagrin of director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley, who had expected to see something in the works by now.

At one point considered for a mixed-used development – retail/ office space on the

ground floor, with seniors apartments above – the site might be ideal for that kind of project, said Coun. Allan Poffenroth.

He suggested Blaze could go with a mixeduse building, providing commercial space on the ground floor and residential above, with the potential of allowing for the redevelopment of the ground floor if the commercial space does not rent after a certain period of time.

While unable to commit to the idea on the

spot, Blaze Properties’ Mike Voll said he is open to exploring that option.

In the meantime, the company is looking for an extension of the development charges waiver.

Sommerfeld suggested a minimum of four or five years, or perhaps even just leaving it in place until development finally goes ahead.

Kennaley plans to review the request before bringing recommendation back to council prior to the expiration of the current deal.

Townships on different paths, face common ills

B

oth Woolwich and Wellesley past their 2012 budgets Tuesday night, but the processes were markedly different. Where Woolwich’s passed unanimously without comment, Wellesley councillors continue to debate the issue right up to a split vote.

In the end, Woolwich residents got a 5.25 per cent tax hike. In Wellesley, the rate is two per cent.

Chafed by criticism, Woolwich officials will point to the fact their township’s taxes are lower than the municipality to the west. That’s true.

It’s also true that Wellesley is largely reliant on residential and agricultural properties to form its tax base, whereas Woolwich has much more lucrative industrial and commercial lands. Woolwich has also benefited, at least on the surface, from growth and the resultant increase in assessment far more than has Wellesley.

Where Woolwich opted for a 2.5 per

cent special levy to fund infrastructure projects, Wellesley ultimately balked at even a small addition above the two per cent target to help build its reserve funds, the kind of savings that pay for things like road, bridge and sewer repairs. There’s an argument to be made that Wellesley has in fact traditionally downplayed long-term reserves in favour of lower taxes in the here and now, an issue that formed the basis of the divided vote Tuesday night.

The smaller township also tends to spend more cautiously, the result of smaller revenues – its budget calls for a total tax levy of $3.6 million this year, as compared to Woolwich’s $6.3 million on an operating budget of $12.3 million – and a culture of spendit-like-it’s-your-own money.

Both townships have to be mindful of tens of millions of dollars in upcoming infrastructure spending.

As the discussion about reserve funds indicates, Wellesley does tend to err on the side of caution.

Woolwich, while not profligate, has become more bureaucratic, with councillors removed from the specifics of the budget – there’s tinkering at the edges, but not with underlying problem that has allowed for staff numbers to increase without any commensurate addition in value to residents, the ones footing the bill for the whole thing.

creeping upon the township ever so slowly. Much like the extra weight seems to appear as we age if left unchecked, the township is experiencing bloat of its own. Standing there under fluorescent lights and parked in front of a sharp, well-polished mirror, there’s no hiding the flab any longer.

Where council is supposed to like a personal trainer, admonishing the administration about eating too much and urging it to get out to trim the fat, it’s all too often plunked itself down at the same table, loosened the top button and helped itself to seconds … and thirds.

To keep the diet analogy alive, Wellesley is a vegan in need of the occasional juicy red steak. Woolwich, on the other hand, needs to be weaned off the junk food in favour of eating its veggies … and much smaller portions.

There’s no need to panic over the shift of power to Asia

O

n Feb. 15, just as Chinese VicePresident Xi Jinping arrived in the United States for a four-day visit, U.S. President Barack Obama told an audience of American workers in Milwaukee: “Manufacturing is coming back!” Coming back from China, that is.

But while the Master Lock Company of Milwaukee has indeed moved some jobs back to the United States, everybody knows that the flow will really continue to be in the other direction.

It doesn’t matter whether China’s economy finally overtakes America’s in 2020, or 2025, or 2030. A great shift of productivity and wealth is underway, and economic power generally translates pretty directly into military power. So will the United States and China be able to manage the shift without a great war?

At the end of Vice-President Xi’s U.S. visit on Feb. 18, the future Chinese leader assured delegates at a trade conference in Los Angeles: “A prosperous and stable China will not be a threat to any country. It will only be a positive force for world peace and development.” Perhaps, but everybody else is very nervous about it.

The transition from one dominant world economic power to another is always tricky, and the historical precedents are not encouraging.

Spain was the 16th-century superpower, and the shift to French domination, though never complete, entailed several generations of war.

Then Britain displaced France, amidst several more generations of war.

When Germany challenged British supremacy and Japan began building its empire in the Pacific and East

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER Asia in the early 20th century, the transition involved two world wars – and resulted in the de facto division of the world between two non-European superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union. The omens are not promising, to say the least.

Both the U.S. and the Chinese armed forces use these precedents to argue for greater military spending. The Chinese generals mostly do it privately, within the confines of Communist Party hierarchy. American military leaders do it more publicly, by coming up with risk assessments designed to frighten the public into keeping defence spending up, but both groups play the same game.

They can’t help it. Their military training and their whole worldview condition them to expect conflict, and their corporate interest in a higher defence budget leads them to define almost any change as a threat. It sometimes feels like we are doomed to repeat the past endlessly.

But the past is a complicated place, and there is a systematic distortion of history that emphasises violent transitions at the expense of peaceful ones. In fact, at least one major power shift in the past century was entirely peaceful.

The U.S. economy overtook Britain’s late in the 19th century, and it was not inevitable that the change in the pecking order would be peace-

ful. The time when the two countries would be close allies was still far in the future, and throughout the 19th century Americans continued to see Britain, their old colonial master, as their most dangerous enemy. The two countries fought their last war in 18121814, but Britain kept a garrison in Canada until 1870.

London then withdrew the garrison, but not because it trusted the United States. It just calculated that the United States was now so strong that Britain could never win a land war against it in North America. It also concluded that a large Royal Navy presence in American waters was likely to drive the United States into a naval arms race that Britain would lose, and so began thinning out the number of warships that it kept in the western Atlantic.

It was the right strategy. The United States never invaded Canada again, and although it meddled a great deal in the affairs of various Caribbean and Central American countries, that did not threaten any British vital interest. The thorny crown of being the world’s greatest power passed from Britain to the United States without a war, and within one more generation the two countries were actually allies.

So now it’s America’s turn to figure out what to do about an emerging great-power rival on the far side of a great ocean, and one option would be to copy Britain’s example. Don’t provoke the Chinese by hemming their country in with airbases, carrier fleets and military alliances, and they’ll probably behave well. If they

Greeks not overly profligate, keep tax issues in mind G

reece, once an idyllic dream vacation spot, has become synonymous with financial turmoil. It’s a convenient shorthand in the debate over government spending. And a bogeyman right up there with terrorists and online pornographers.

We’ve seen more than a few comparisons as Ottawa tackles its deficits and, not surprisingly, in the aftermath of Don Drummonds report about Ontario’s finances. But let’s be clear: we’re not Greece. In fact, Greece isn’t Greece, at least not in the way it’s commonly portrayed.

Yes, Greece is in a bad financial jam. Yes, much of the problem is self-inflicted. No, the Greeks weren’t (overly) profligate spenders. The problem, however, is a basic one: they spent more than they brought in. The spending wasn’t exorbitant, but tax revenues are so low that deficits were a given.

Officially, Greek tax rates are fairly high, even by European standards. But Greeks routinely find ways of avoiding taxes, enforcement is spotty and bribery is reported as rampant. Those Greeks in the top 20 per cent of earners pay virtually nothing in the way of taxes, the result of old deals extending back to the country’s days as a military junta and the widespread tax evasion in place today.

So even though Greece falls into the middle of the Eurozone pack when it comes to government spending, its tax collection rates rank near the bottom. And despite what we would view as generous social programs and retirement provisions, Greeks have one of the lower

Greece’s below-average spending on social benefits is no recent trend: in the decade leading up to the 2008 fiscal crisis, Greece spent only $3530.47 per capita on social protection benefits, slightly less than Spain’s spending and about $700 more than Portugal’s, which has one of the lowest levels in all of the Eurozone. By contrast, Germany and France spent more than double the Greek level, while the original Eurozone 12 level averaged $6251.78.

So, in the wake of huge deficits created by the shortfall between revenues and expenditures, what’s the cure? Apparently, Greece’s faltering economy is to be helped by deep cuts to spending, support programs and employment. Seems counterintuitive, but there you have it.

We’re in nothing like that kind of trouble here, but we should be making comparisons – not for the alarmist reasons some keep pointing to, but because of what can happen if we ignore a rationale discussion about taxes here. (And, the perils of allowing politicians and bureaucrats to strip away public assets under the guise of a manmade crisis – see Klein, Naomi.)

Where politics are involved, there are plenty of reasons to be upset about paying taxes: governments of all stripes waste considerable amounts of our money. Incompetence, patronage, graft and outright theft still exist. From RIM Park to eHealth and the G8/G20 fiasco, there are no shortages of examples at all levels of government.

In looking at those kinds of expenditures, paying your taxes becomes hard to stomach.

That said, the bulk of the tax money collected by governments goes into providing us with services. From water pipes and roads to health care and education, these are things we opt to pay for collectively.

That’s not the kind of thing we hear from politicians.

The reality is we need to pay taxes. Even the most extreme libertarians see some kind of state function, typically for policing, the legal system and national defence – all of which require taxation.

Taxes allow us to pool our resources so that we can afford to have things that would be impossible if we had to pay as individuals. If only those families with kids currently in school paid for the education system, for instance, the costs would be prohibitive. Multiply that by a host of government services, and it’s clear that we’re better off acting collectively.

Too often, however, “tax” is used as a dirty word in political debates.

Each of us feels overburdened by taxes, and there’s some merit in that. Each of us can find examples of programs and services we’d

rather not fund, making it easy to gripe about wasted tax money.

Truth is, we’re generally much better off for what our tax dollars buy us.

That’s not to say things can’t be improved. As this week’s revelations about the Harper government show, plenty of our money is genuinely wasted and funnelled into the wrong pockets. And politicians must be disabused of the notion that taxpayers are a bottomless well. That’s especially true given the huge infrastructure deficit.

Hundreds of billions will be needed to repair and replace crumbling water systems, bridges, electrical grids and a host of other hard services we take for granted.

That means more of our tax dollars will have to be directed that way at a time when an aging population will be demanding ever-more health-care and related services.

Tough decisions are coming (as the Drummond report makes clear), the kind we’ll have to keep in mind while reviewing both spending and tax policy. We’re going to need more, not less money. Some programs will have to go. New spending plans may have to be scrapped. And, most importantly, tax giveaways and the shifting of the tax burden to individuals, largely in the middle class, will have to stop.

We’ve got some solutions on the table, and a look at what not to do in the form of Greece. What’s missing is the political will to dole out the cure and the public appetite for the medicine.

Property tax increases are unsustainable To the Editor, The Observer is to be commended for their in depth reporting of Woolwich Township spending and finances. Annual township tax increases of five per cent (including previous increases of six per cent within the past five years) are clearly not sustainable and completely out of line with recent historical rates of inflation.

At these rates, residential tax bills effectively double within 12 to 15 years, making homeownership difficult for residents living on fixed incomes, as well as others whose incomes don’t quite grow at such annualized rates. Additionally, these increase will also have a substantial negative effect

on home values (and people’s net worth).

As the current period of record-low mortgage rates begins to end, coupled with record per capita debt levels, high property taxes will become another added element negatively effecting real estate values and homeownership affordability.

Is Harper acting in Canada’s interests, or China’s?

To the Editor, Four years ago, Stephen Harper would not give the time of day to the Chinese, and now he is in bed with them. Harper returned from China having signed lots of trade deals. Is this good, or are there other aspects to consider?

The Harper government criticizes “radical” environmental groups with “foreign funding” for opposing the Northern Gateway pipeline, but does not mention the investment that Chinese companies have made in Canadian energy companies. For example, the state-owned Sinopec Corp. has bought a chunk of Syncrude, and the Chinese company has started to flex its muscle on the board of Syncrude to support the pipeline. Harper tells us that the pipeline is in Canada’s interest; I think he meant “China’s” interest.

Terry Glavin of the Ottawa Citizen has written extensively on this topic, and it makes for interesting reading.

Sinopec is notoriously corrupt, apparently sending gangs to beat up workers who dare to ask for wages.

Chinese industries are very lax with environmental standards – for example, as reported in the Economist recently, industries spilled

cadmium into the Longjiang River but did not report the spill for several weeks, so local residents continued to use the contaminated water.

Harper has sold out Canada to these interests, while groups like the Tibetans have been abandoned.

What does Canada get?

Two rented pandas (at a cost in excess of $10 million) and a couple of jobs to shovel panda droppings. Not impressive.

The United States has no truly vital interests on the Asian mainland, or at least none that it could protect by fighting China.

It was entirely safe from foreign attack before it became the world’s greatest power, and it will still be militarily invulnerable long after it loses that distinction.

Britain is a lot more prosperous than it was when it ran the world, and its people are probably happier too. Decline (especially decline that is only relative) is not nearly as bad a fate as Americans imagine.

It is with even warmer weather in mind that the Elmira Sugar Kings and the Township of Woolwich are busy planning the first annual Woolwich Home and Garden Show from Apr. 19-21 at the Jim McLeod Arena in the WMC. The event is the brainchild of the Sugar Kings, who hope to use it as a fundraiser, with half the proceeds going back into their booster club and to help cover other costs associated with running the team.

The other half will go to the township.

Organizers hope that the event will prove to be popular in Elmira and surrounding communities.

“People tend to stay home more and do up their backyards with pools and entertainment, so I think the show should be a good go,” said Bruce Sieling, a member of the Kings’ board of directors and one of the show’s organizers.

“It’s getting so expensive to travel and this type of show will give them ideas and get them talking to people that can help them.”

Admission to the show is $2, while the cost to rent a booth for the three days is $395.50 (HST included), which will provide vendors with a 10x10 booth, a skirted table, and a chair. An extra $50 will get vendors a premium booth that

“It’s a chance for us to meet with folks who don’t have time to stop into the dealership in their everyday lives,” said Ryan Hicks, marketing manager at Premiere Equipment.

"It’s an opportunity for us to have some face time with folks and visit with them, and if they aren’t looking to get anything today or tomorrow at least they’ll know us and consider us if they do think ‘I need a new mower.’”

include a range of lawn and garden equipment, trimmers, tractors, and other tools.

“Stuff that folks can use to maintain their property and help make looking after the property easier.”

The first annual Woolwich Home and Garden Show runs Apr. 19 (5:30-9:30 p.m.), 20 (5:30-9:30 p.m.) and 21 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

Sieling said that the team came up with the idea back in the fall, and it’s been a lot of work to try and pull it off in time for spring.

“There are always things that you don’t realize are going to happen; you might not think of certain things, so there have been a few stumbling blocks but overall it’s going well.

“The word is getting around and the interest seems good.”

Seiling and his colleagues sought the help of the organizers for the annual Wellesley Home and Garden Show, who are currently preparing for their 24th annual event, saying they’ve been very helpful in providing a list of do’s and don’ts as well as tips to try and attract vendors.

“They’re quite interested in helping out. It’s what communities work together on.”

There is room for 104 vendors at this years show, and while Sieling said it is hard to pin down an accurate number of confirmed participants thus far, he did say that space was filling up quickly. Vendors will range from farm equipment dealers and carpet cleaners, to garden centers and landscape contractors.

“We canvassed all of the Elmira area so far first because we want to get as many locals as we can, and now we’re spreading out to get more,” said Sieling.

Unusual winter marked by amazing farm forecast I

t’s not a typical winter, by any means, in or out of farming. No snow cover means nutrient-rich top soil is vulnerable to even modest winds. And it’s the same almost everywhere. For example, a friend in Winnipeg, a city which is likewise experiencing a dry, relatively warm winter, told me last week his second-floor office window is occluded with a film of grime – grime that was once productive topsoil on Manitoba farms.

Unusually warm temperatures also mean the killing cold we normally experience in Canada may not destroy all the bacteria, viruses and parasites it normally helps control. No one’s certain what that will mean in farmers’ fields, because we’ve had so few so-called “open winters.”

Barring some pest- or weather-related calamity, though, the forecast is cheery for Canadian farmers.

Prices farmers are getting for their crops and livestock are superb, and last week Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported that the farm sector can look forward to good times for the next 10 years. In fact, the latest figures from Ottawa reveal last year’s record net income is forecast to jump nearly 25

That’s amazing. Despite some real challenges across the country last year – ironically, mainly due to flooding and rainfall, as well as higher costs for fertilizer, fuel and feed – the farm sector emerged with a great deal of optimism, and money in its pockets. That money is getting spent. Farm equipment manufacturers are introducing more new models than ever, and farmers are buying. Six-month waiting times for delivery are not unusual. Farmers are also paying record amounts of money for land, because prices are up, they can afford it and competition for that land is growing.

And in keeping with trends that have developed over the past few years, farmers are feeling buoyed by commodity prices that make it possible to make a reasonable living. Farmers comprise less than two per cent of the population, yet they contribute many more times that to the economy. It appears they’re finally being rewarded for their efforts – Ottawa predicts total farm family income will be 27 per cent above the last five-year average. Hogs, grains and oilseeds – commodities Canadian farmers are particularly good at growing or raising – are leading the way.

It’s not all rosy. Last year, part of western Canadian farmers’ income

came from disaster assistance and production insurance payments.

For the past two years, it’s been too wet there to get a decent crop. Now, it’s too dry. In farming, that’s just the way it goes.

But in the past, disasters often seemed to be compounded by low prices. That’s not the case today.

The outlook is stable and nearly everyone has food production at home and abroad on their minds.

For example, Microsoft founder Bill Gates has made hunger his number-one priority, announcing $200 million in aid projects earlier this week while imploring the United Nations to help farmers in underdeveloped nations improve their production practices.

This increased profile gives the agri-food sector an ideal opportunity to explain itself to the public.

Astronomical forecasts such as that from Agriculture and AgriFood Canada put farming and food prices in particular under the microscope. The public has questions, such as where does that additional income go? What are farmers doing with it to preserve the environment? How do new developments in research and agricultural production impact health and the economy?

The answers are there. Now’s the time for the farm sector to speak up.

A recipe for goodwill Students in ELAWS program put together 60 apple crisps for the homeless

W

hat do four bushels of apples, 60 cups of oats, 30 cups of brown sugar and 20 cups of flour get you?

Well, an awful lot of apple crisp dessert, but for the approximately 100 students who are enrolled in the Elmira Life and Work School at EDSS, it also provides a valuable learning

experience about the benefits of volunteer work and helping the less fortunate.

On Tuesday morning the ELAWS students came together to form the Great Apple Crisp Assembly Line at Lions Hall in Elmira, where they managed to combine all those ingredients into 60 apple crisps, promptly donated to the House of Friendship and

“The idea of the day is to get them thinking about community service,” said Jeff Martin, head coordinator of the ELAWS program at EDSS. “Volunteer service is work, you just don’t get paid for it, and it’s an important part of our society and our community.”

ELAWS is an alternative learning program at Elmira District Secondary School, blending classroom instruction with valuable work experience for students in Grades 9 through 12. The program is designed to address the needs of students and parents who have historically not participated in secondary education.

Students complete applied-level courses with an emphasis on math, technical skills, and writing, while aiming for the workplace, college, or apprenticeship training.

“It tends to draw on Mennonites because they’re not planning on going to university for the most part, but they want that high school diploma so they can go to trade school or maybe a college certificate,” said Martin.

vice agency founded in 1939 in partnership with local Christian churches, and its mission is to serve low-income adults, youth and children and to promote opportunities for personal growth, wholesome relationships and community development.

Out of the Cold, meanwhile, provides shelter and warm meals to the homeless and low-income earners during the winter months. It’s run by nine Waterloo Region churches on a rotating basis. They provide a warm meal at dinner, games and friendship, a place to sleep, and breakfast in the morning, and it is completely volunteer-run and donationbased, and this is their 14th season in operation.

“This will go over very well, I can guarantee you of that,” said Mike Savage, a representative from Out of the Cold who gave a brief presentation to the ELAWS student before the assembling began.

He said that life on the street is very stressful for the people that the organization serves, those who are never quite sure where their next meal will come from or where they will spend their next night.

While some of us may not consider a small serving of apple crisp a large gesture, it can mean the world to those down on their luck.

“It’s very humanizing.

Like being treated like a human being again,” Savage said.

To create the desserts, the students were divided into various work stations: some measuring dry ingredients that were supplied by Kitchen Kuttings in Elmira, while others peeled, cored, and sliced the apples, supplied

by Martin’s Family Fruit Farm.

This is the first time that the ELAWS program has attempted a project of this size and magnitude, and it

hese days, with so much discussion around eating fewer preserved foods and the availability of great ingredients, making salad dressings from scratch is the perfect beginning to more ‘clean’ eating.

Caesar salad is a favourite among most people, and can be found on just about every restaurant menu. That doesn’t mean it is made well. The white, gloppy, creamy ‘caesar’ dressing found in most restaurants doesn’t hold true to the original tangy, spicy dressing. Don’t omit the anchovy paste – it adds so much to the flavour.

Originally invented in Mexico as a “spicy salad for men” (ha!) the Caesar salad is so flavourful it need only lightly coat the lettuce.

Our version of the dressing is eggless, therefore it will keep in your fridge for a couple of weeks, at least. This recipe makes enough for a good crowd of 12 people, so use as much as you need and refrigerate any leftovers. Just bring to room temperature before serving, as the olive oil will solidify.

certainly wasn’t easy to coordinate all 100 teenagers involved.

In fact, Martin said that in the past they have tried to get the students involved with charity groups around Waterloo Region, from the Mennonite Central Committee to the Cancer Society, but the logistics involved were too much for those charities to handle.

“Most charities will say ‘100 people for one day? We can’t organize that.’”

So they decided to try something a little different and diverted their charitable energy towards a food project.

“Pretty much all the students and teachers are involved in a church, so we approached House of Friendship and Out of the Cold and asked if we could make them something,” said Janice Harper, one of the teachers in

the ELAWS program.

“Rather than send bodies, we asked to send food, and of course they said yes.”

Apple crisp wasn’t the first item on the menu, however, as Harper said they had a grandiose plan of using ovens in the homes and churches of the students, as well as at the high school, to bake lasagna, but she said it was just impossible to organize.

So they decided to build the apple crisps instead, which can be easily popped into an oven and baked whenever they’re ready to be served.

he Elmira Sugar Kings withstood a ferocious third-period comeback by the Guelph Hurricanes on Sunday night, emerging with a 5-4 win.

Elmira was outscored by their visitors 4-2 in the final frame, but it wasn’t enough as the Kings collected their third win in three nights over the weekend, having previously defeated the Owen Sound Greys 6-4 on Feb. 17 and the Waterloo Siskins 7-3 the following night.

Despite six points in three games, the Kings head coach was visibly upset with his

team’s third period outing against Guelph.

“I thought we were very, very good for the first two periods, and I thought we were awful in the third,” said Dean DeSilva. “I attribute it to cocky teenagers who think they’re better than they are and it’s going to come back and haunt them if they’re not careful.”

The team played a textbook perfect game through the first two periods, outshooting Guelph 47-17 and leading 3-0 heading into the third, but the wheels fell off quickly as Guelph scored just five seconds into the third and again 45 seconds later to make the

score 3-2.

“We had a good first couple of periods, but in the start of the third we shut it off there for a bit and let them back in the game,” said defenceman Wade Pfeffer, who opened the scoring at 10:29 of the second period with his first goal of the year.

Playing 4-on-4, Pfeffer snuck down to the hash marks behind the Guelph defenders and received a crossice pass from Scott Nagy along the half-boards, which he directed into the wide open net past goaltender Colin Furlong.

Pfeffer lifted his head to the rafters and pumped

both arms as a look of relief washed over him after finally scoring his first of the season. Last year he had nine goals and represented the Kings at the league’s AllStar game.

“Finally. It took a while,” he said smiling after the game.

The goals came in bunches afterwards, with Rob Bennett scoring at 15:40 by knocking a rebound out of mid-air while being taken to the ice by a Guelph defender. Will Cook and Cash Seraphim collected the assists.

A little more than two minutes later Andrew Smith scored his 41st of the season

when he took a nice pass from Brett Priestap in the slot and snapped it past Furlong at 17:59. Brad Kraus had the other helper on the goal.

In the third Guelph showed they wouldn’t lie down to the defending Sutherland Cup champs and former King Nic MacEachern slapped a rolling puck over the shoulder of goaltender Nick Horrigan just five seconds in to make it 3-1, and Shane Kinsella made it 3-2 at the 50 second mark by shoveling the puck past Horrigan on the powerplay.

hawn Fitzpatrick was the overtime hero on Feb. 18, firing home a rebound at 8:32 of the extra frame to lift the Wellesley Applejacks to a 3-2 win over the Ayr Centennials, knotting their bestof-seven series at one game apiece.

The Jacks had previously lost Game 1 in Ayr on Feb. 16 by a score of 5-1.

“We played well both games. Game 1 we ran out of legs and they got good goaltending early,” said head coach Kevin Fitzpatrick.

“Saturday we played

very well again with a limited lineup, and the guys played well without the puck and to me that was the key.”

Wellesley responded to the disappointing series-opening loss with one of their best efforts of the season, and Connor McLeod lifted the Jacks to a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period with a pair of goals just seven minutes apart.

His first, at 11:39, came on the powerplay when he pounced on a rebound from a Tyler Eckert shot and fired it into the top of the net.

McLeod scored again at 18:31 with an unas-

sisted marker after the puck squirted out from behind the Ayr net, he wasted no time in unleashing a hard wrist shot past goaltender Jordan Witt to make it 2-0.

Immediately following the goal, however, Jacks forward Brett Vickers was assessed a crosschecking major for flattening Ayr’s Andrew Richard after the play and he received a 5-minute penalty and a game misconduct.

A happy situation that’s been a long time coming Steve Galea this logic goes out the window. I’ve been given a carte blanche.

For some reason, people feel that if a guy like me has achieved 50, he deserves a break.

This realization is opening up a whole new world for me and even now I’m busily planning for the future.

I figure, I’ll get a really nice duck boat on my 55th, another nice varmint rifle on my 60th, an African safari on my 65th , a drift boat on my 70th, and so on. And each one will have that special immunity that comes with a milestone birthday. Oh, this is awesome!

This might not be a realistic assumption but it is the kind of thing that makes me think that the downhill trip towards 150 – the age that I assume I’ll probably quit bow hunting and stick primarily to warm-water fly fishing – won’t be all that bad.

Heck, if I get a long bow because 50 is special, imagine what I’ll be able to buy myself when I reach 100. I’m thinking a bass boat with all the fixings.

In fact, I actually broached the subject with my significant other

ought to feel when approaching the half-century mark.

And maybe this is the whole point of it. Perhaps that little bauble is meant to divert me from all the ache and pains I’ve accumulated in 50 years of normal and abnormal wear and tear. Maybe it’s some kind of reward for getting this far.

You know what? Forget what I said about keeping those lavish gifts to a minimum …

ometime in the month of March, I’m celebrating my 50th birthday.

Please, keep the lavish gifts to a reasonable level.

I only mention this because I used that day as an excuse to buy myself a piece of outdoors kit that I’ve been wanting for a long time.

In this case, it is a left-handed, Bear Archery Montana longbow in 55-pound draw – an elegant little bow that I plan to hunt deer with this fall.

But that’s beside the point. The point is that my partner didn’t say a word to me as I ordered it. She just assumed that buying yourself something was what everyone did for their 50th. More than that, she actually chipped in a significant portion of the cost.

This might not seem like a big deal but I actually think it is. In fact, I believe I have finally found a fatal flaw in the armour of fiscal responsibility.

Look, if I had ordered that longbow last summer for no good reason, I would have had some explaining to do. Nothing serious I guess, but it might have got uncomfortable, especially when we compared the price of it to the price of what I bought her on her birthday.

Moreover, though that bow isn’t truly expensive, when you consider all the other bows I already own, it would have been hard to justify.

But now that I’m turning 50, all

Elmira teen is SOJHL’s McConnell Conference rookie of the year Adam Brubacher puts size and skill together for an outstanding year on the blue line with the Ayr Centennials

e may be one of the youngest players out on the ice, but you certainly wouldn’t know it by looking at him.

At 6’2” and 200 pounds, 16-year-old Adam Brubacher of the Ayr Centennials plays a big game, and the Elmira resident and Grade 11 student at Elmira District Secondary School was rewarded for his outstanding freshman season in the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League by being named the McConnell Conference rookie of the year.

Brubacher is the youngest player on the team, yet led the Centennials defensive core in scoring with five goals and 30 points in 35 games, along with just 10 penalty minutes.

“It feels really good. It’s definitely a great accomplishment,” said Brubacher, while summing up the three main reasons for his success as “good outlet passes, physical play and a strong powerplay.”

It was with the extra man that Brubacher made his biggest impact on the score sheet, recording two powerplay goals and 16 assists in helping Ayr convert 23 per cent of their powerplay chances – best in the league.

The adjustment from minor hockey to Junior D wasn’t easy for Brubacher, though, and he said the league is a lot faster and the opposition is a lot tougher to

Ayr head coach Scott Eby believes the award is a fitting recognition of how hard the defender has worked this season after making the jump from playing Woolwich Major Midget A last season.

“He’s big and he works hard and he’s just a real nice, quiet kid. It’s worked out really well and he’s been a really good fit,” said Eby. “He carries himself like a veteran player.”

Eby said that he was lucky to get the young blueliner

this season, as Ayr wasn’t the defender’s first choice.

He initially tried out for the Sugar Kings along with his older brother Andrew, who also plays defence.

The Kings eventually signed Andrew, and wanted the younger Brubacher as

well, but his age prevented him from signing as Junior B squads can only have two 16-year-olds on the roster.

Despite that, Adam still practices with the Kings every Monday night in Elmira.

The family has a longstanding connection to the Kings as Adam’s father, Eric, was a member of the very first squad back in 1971 before being drafted by the New York Rangers in the 1974 amateur draft.

Ayr is affiliated with the Kings this season and when the Junior B squad couldn’t take him, Ayr gladly gave him a chance.

“Right from the start of the year he was on the powerplay and the penalty kill, and he’s very smart with the puck and sees the game well,” said Eby. “When we signed him this year we said to him that we wanted him here for a year, then you’re out of here. We want you to go on to bigger and better things, and he’s done that.”

Now, Brubacher and his Ayr teammates are busy concentrating on their opening playoff round against the Wellesley Applejacks, which is tied at one game apiece.

“I think it’ll be a good series, we’re pretty evenly matched,” he said, adding that the team does have a target on its back after winning the McConnell Conference last season.

Hasson’s initial shot from the blue line went over the net but bounced off the glass back into the crease, where Campbell knocked it into the empty net.

Smith tallied his second of the night at 14:31 from Kraus following some good Elmira pressure in the Guelph zone.

The Hurricanes looked to make it interesting with another powerplay goal at 15:09 to make it 5-3, and MacEachern scored his second of the night to make it 5-4, but with only 2.1 seconds left on the clock, it was too little, too late.

Horrigan finished with 25

saves for the win, and the third period goal by Smith was his league-leading 11th game-winner of the year.

The win also pushed Elmira past Stratford for second in the Midwestern Conference standings with 79 points, two points behind Brantford for first.

The Kings have spent the past week preparing for their weekend matchup on the road tonight (Saturday) against Brantford (39-7-3), and they return home Sunday to close out the season against Stratford (38-9-1).

“We’ll be playing one of them in the playoffs some time, hopefully, so we have to be prepared for that and you always want to go into the playoffs on a positive and doing the right things,” said DeSilva.

In the second period, Ayr’s Andrew Tapsell took over the game, scoring at 10:17 on a jam play in front of Heer, before tying it up just over four minutes later on a bit of a lucky bounce when a blocked shot ended up on his stick and he fired it into the wide empty net at 14:28.

Despite letting their opponents back into the game, the Jacks’ coach said he was happy with the way the team responded.

“Even before they tied it up, we kind of hit the wall, but there was about three minutes to go in the period where we had back-to-back real strong shifts, and that carried over to the third and the overtime,” said Fitzpatrick.

Both teams were held off

the score board in the third, sending the game to overtime, and Wellesley looked determined to not head back to Ayr down 2-0 in the series.

Geoff Par, normally a defender but playing forward due to the number of injuries to the Jacks’ bench, got a rush started by using his big frame to protect the puck from two Ayr defenders. Tyler Eckert made a low shot on goal and Fitzpatrick was there to bang home the rebound past the sprawling keeper to give Wellesley the overtime win.

“Shawn [Fitzpatrick] made a great play to break away from his guy and headed straight to the net,” said the head coach, adding that come playoff time every game is like a chess match, with coaches and players trying to match their opponents every move.

Josh Heer had a terrific bounce-back game after allowing five goals in Game 1, making 45 saves in the victory, perhaps none bigger than the handful he made during a 5-on-3 penalty kill to start the third period.

With up to four injured bodies set to return before the end of the week, the Jacks are waiting to hear back about their captain, Rob Hinschberger, who was injured in the 5-1 defeat in Game 1. Fitzpatrick said it initially looked like a minor crack at the base of his left thumb, but said that the captain was heading to see a specialist this week to know the full extent of the damage.

Game 3 was Thursday evening in Ayr, with results unavailable before press time.

Game 4 is scheduled for tonight (Saturday) back in Wellesley at 7:30 p.m.
