Doll-maker’s handicraft on display The fruits of years of collecting and crafting are up for sale at show Katie Edmonds

I

f you were able to take a trip back in time 40 years and you walked down Arthur Street in downtown Elmira, there is a good chance you would have seen Esther Otto’s family’s doll shop. Before the building became what is now Woolwich Community Services, the red brick structure was home to Esther’s family and rows upon rows of hand-crafted dolls.

Dolls of all different shapes and sizes lined the walls over the years– they had Cabbage Patch dolls, angel dolls, the characters from Anne of Green Gables, some firemen, a train conductor, a limited edition Santa on a train and a number of historically-based characters such as Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

“Our house was just filled with them. We had hundreds of dolls of all shapes and sizes,” reminisces Otto from her Drayton home. “People came from all over the world

The collection began when Otto’s mother received a number of dolls as gifts, and the assortment began to accumulate.

“She never had a doll as a child, and once she was grown up she said she would like a doll,” Otto remembered. “From there, people would give her a doll for every occasion and the collection just grew.”

In addition to purchasing dolls, Otto made her living as a doll-maker. She has handcrafted hundreds of unique dolls over the years and has also taught a class in dollmaking to dozens of students.

“You start by pouring the mold,” she explained of the process. “Then you clean them and fire them and then put a coat of polish on them. Then you paint it, fire it, paint it and fire it again.

Each doll is fired five times.”

The family ran their home like a museum filled with collectors’ items, but what promised to be a prof-

itable investment for the Elmira family has now become somewhat of a burden. When Otto moved from Elmira to Drayton, she took the dolls with her but had no place to display them for sale, so the collection now sits in her basement.

The root of the problem for doll-makers now is the decreased popularity of handmade dolls as collector’s items. According to Otto, interest in her doll-making class has declined over the years, a fact she attributes to the availability of cheaper, mass-produced plastic dolls now found in stores.

“Each piece that a dollmaker has to buy for a doll can be expensive,” she explains. “Nowadays you can go into Walmart and get an entire doll for the price that a doll-maker will pay for just a pair of eyes for a handmade one.”

Struggling to make use of her collection now that she has retired from the business of doll-making, Otto

has opened a display at Studio Factor in Drayton where they will be available for show and sale for the month of December. Otto hopes that the community will realize the amount of time and work that goes into each doll and consider purchasing one for a family member or friend for Christmas. The dolls range in price from $100 to $600 each.

“What is disappointing is that we are not considered ‘artists’ in the art community,” said Otto. “Many people think that doll-making is a stay-at-home craft kind of thing, but it is not. A lot of work goes into each piece.

People don’t object to paying that much for a painting, but they think a doll at that price is too much money.”

The exhibit is open to anyone, even visitors who don’t plan to purchase. The studio on Wood Street in Drayton is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., excluding Sundays. For more information, call Otto at 519-638-5194.

Working with Greentec, a company that specializes in environmentally responsible recycling and recov-

ery of electronic waste, the students are asking schoolmates, their friends and their families to donate their old, broken or used desktop computers, laptops, monitors, TVs, hard drives, disk drives, copiers, scanners, modems, VCRs, videogame

A vent that was closed instead of being open during the heating process, allowing for the build-up of temperature and pressure, was at the root of Chemtura’s Sept. 27 release of a chemical compound over parts of Elmira.

In findings released Thursday, the company also notes a series of audible and visual alerts, activated as the pressure grew, went unheeded as there was no operator in the vicinity.

Some 4,200 kilograms of BLE 25, a mixture of diphenylamine and acetone used as an antioxidant in the making of some rubber products, and 112 kg of acetone were released when a rupture disc burst as designed due to the pressure build-up in the storage vessel.

In response, the company says the BLE process will not be run without an operator present at all times, the process vent will be open when the blender is being heated, the blender involved in the release will have an automatic shutoff process that kicks in when pressure gets too high, and process alerts will be made more noticeable throughout the building.

Criticized for failing to notify Woolwich officials in a timely manner, Chemtura will now contact the township immediately in the event of another incident.

In the cleanup effort that followed the release, the company has washed BLE spots from 270 cars and 213 homes in Elmira.

A bird count area is a 24-kilometre diameter circle divided into sections.

Each section is surveyed by a team of birders on a single day over 24 hours between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5. The information they collect is used to track population trends locally and nationally.

In 1900, American ornithologist Frank Chapman foresaw the decline of some species. He suggested an annual Christmas bird census, which continues today, but extends to a two-week period surrounding the Christmas holiday.

n Elmira business owner stopped into the Elmira police detachment Dec. 10 to report an emailbased fraud. The man received a message purporting to be from the National Bank of Canada and the sender asked him to click on a link in order to update his personal information.

Suspecting it was a scam; he did not click the link but instead printed the email and brought it into police.

Upon investigation, it was found that the National Bank of

espite the efforts of snowplow crews, Waterloo Regional Police reported a spike in minor accidents in some parts of the region, as drivers slipped and skidded on slush and snow-covered roads during the first real snowfalls of the season.

By Monday afternoon, police had reported 107 property damage and nine injury collisions in the previous 24 hours due to weather conditions, said Const.

Graham Williamson of the OPP highway safety division.

“Pretty well close to

100 per cent of the collisions that have happened simply occurred because the drivers were travelling too fast for the conditions.

Even though the weather is getting a lot better, the roads are still very slippery,” he said later in the week.

Region of Waterloo manager of transportation operations Ed Switenky echoed that statement, saying that despite the rise in accidents over the past week, the snowclearing efforts in the region have been going quite well.

The normal operating hours at the township are from 7 a.m.

Despite the slow start, winter is on its way and residents shouldn’t expect to keep their snow shovels idle for long.

Meteorologists expect this winter to experience average snowfall and temperatures from now through to March.

An average temperature for January is -7, in February it is -6.4, and in March it is -1.2. Typically, January also sees 44 cm of snow, February experiences 31 cm,

and March receives 24 cm of snow.

“We’re looking at temperatures, on average, a little bit colder than that, and precipitationwise the outlook at this point is around normal levels of precipitation,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson.

Last year, most of southern Ontario experienced far less snow than normal – up to 50 per cent less accumulation in some areas, Coulson said – due to the El Nino effect, the influence of warmerthan-average waters off the west coast of

Nowadays the event is a community staple and a number of local residents say they wouldn’t miss it, no matter the weather.

Under the CHL, any applications for variances or zone changes would have to adhere to a stricter ruling than would be the case without the designation.

Vink said that the township is hoping for a conservation plan amendment to protect the features of the CHL, rather than an Official Plan amendment, because it would allow greater flexibility and interpretation on a case-by-case basis.

The concept of a CHL has been in the works since a Region of Waterloo study back in 2006, but the applications for a gravel pit license in the area by Guelphbased Capital Paving has fast-tracked the process. In February last year, council approved a one-year moratorium on development in the West Montrose area until the CHL study could be completed.

Vink said that township officials want to bring the proposed plan to council in January for public discussion, and hopes to have the entire process wrapped up by June of 2011.

Overall, through research and discussion with the public, the township has identified a 1,672-acre swath of land it wants to protect under a cultural heritage designation. That area ranges from approximately Northfield Drive to the west, Letson Drive to the south, Katherine Street to the east, and Line 86 to the north.

When the township held a preliminary open house in September, the proposed area included the new subdivision in the north of the village. After consultation with the public and by re-evaluating the site, the new area unveiled to the public on Tuesday excludes the modern subdivision and homes that comprise much of West Montrose today.

“The area isn’t significant, it’s like almost every other subdivision out there,” said Vink. “That doesn’t mean that if someone wants to make a significant change within that area, say build a feed mill, that we wouldn’t

The plan would also aim to protect the organic nature of the development of the original village, which was not laid out according to the traditional grid pattern that we see today, as parcels were sold off and given away in chunks. The CHL would also protect the views associated with the area, concentrating mainly on the valley and the West Montrose covered bridge, as well as the environmental features of the river.

“We want to protect farming and the rural landscape in this vicinity as much as we can.

That’s not to say people can’t build a barn, but what we don’t want is someone to buy the land and build a big house,” said Vink.

“We want to preserve the rural feeling.”

“It does make a difference whether we send the items to a landfill or if we recycle them,” said club member Whit-

The Christmas hampers are the single-biggest program offered

by Woolwich Community Services. Last year the group handed out about 150 baskets to individuals and families in need in the Woolwich and Wellesley area.

The hampers include groceries, a turkey or ham, toys and clothing for the children, and a small gift for the adults.

This year, WCS’ Kelly Christie expects even more hampers to go out.

“We’re up a little from last year. We’ll probably do about 155 hampers this year,” she said. “The community came through and we’ve gotten some fabulous gifts. It’s just been amazing.”

With all the work and 12-hour days that go into making the hamper program a success each year, Christie notes the hardest part isn’t organizing or executing the program. It’s the fact they have to do it at all that she finds most difficult.

“The community has been very generous. If we need boxes, we call Elmira Pet Products; if we need tables, we call the Lions Club; if we need paper, we call Home Hardware head office, and they all came through,” she said.

“The hardest part is seeing how much need there is out there.”

Glasgow Street bridge set to reopen Katie Edmonds

A

fter a $267,000 repair including the replacement of stringers, a new deck using laminated wood, a new tarand-chip surface and various welding spots, the Glasgow Street South Bridge in Conestogo is nearly ready to reopen.

Woolwich officials expect the span to resume carrying traffic next week.

While the bridge is structurally sound at this point, the final work – including the waterproofing and resurfacing – has been put off until next summer, when the weather is more cooperative.

“The crew is out there putting the last touches on it now for its reopening,” said Richard Sigurdson, engineering project supervisor for the Township of Woolwich. “But

it will be closed down for a period of time in the summer as well for some other things.”

In September, Woolwich councilors awarded a $267,000 contract to Looby Builders of Dublin, Ont. to carry out the work, a decision considered to be a quick-fix. The repairs were considered the best medium-term solution, with other options two and three times higher. In the longer-

term, the township will have to look at a major rehabilitation project, or perhaps even replacing the structure.

“It is going to be reopened with the understanding that it will need more permanent fixes in the future,” said Sigurdson.

The 124-year-old bridge is mounted on pins that cause some natural movement in the structure, but not to the extent caused by

the kind of speeding traffic that was never envisioned in the 19th century.

“The reality with very old structures like this is that they need to be inspected every year,” said Sigurdson.

“There will be a shopping list of things to do to the bridge every year to make sure it’s safe to use.”

The bridge was closed for several weeks last fall when the deteriorating deck was deemed unsafe. The township spent $36,000 for interim repairs.

The previous deck, also wood, lasted 13 years. With better technology and materials to be used this time, the township expects 15 to 18 years of use from the new deck.

ecember would not be complete without someone decrying the commercialization of Christmas. In recent years, that lament has been joined by debates over the politically correct efforts to secularize the season, in effect take the Christ out of Christmas. In recent years, the issue has gained even greater attention, particularly south of the border where Christian fundamentalists are a vocal minority.

Closer to home, we’ve seen a flap over “holiday” trees, Christmas being deemed a non-inclusive term.

From saying “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” to opting for “Frosty the Snowman” over “Silent Night” – if any tune at all – the controversy appears here to stay.

Filled with sentiment, Christmas for many of us is linked to very strong memories. Celebrating the yuletide season meant time spent with family

and friends, some of whom we hadn’t seen all year. There were family recipes, rituals – skating parties, midnight strolls or maybe a must-watch movie – and favourite carols. And then there were the presents: childhood memories are full of special items plucked out from under the tree where Santa had been busy the night before.

Ironically, that typical list often omits the Christ in Christmas. In fact, it’s the commercialization that in many ways makes Christmas what it is. Without all the hype, which seems to begin while the Halloween pumpkins are still warm on the sill, the buildup we’ve come to love might not be so grand.

From a theological standpoint, Christmas has far less significance than Easter, yet Christian culture places far more weight on the former.

The religious component is a relatively small part of the public image of both holidays, but that doesn’t preclude those of faith from keeping it as they wish. All the secular trappings serve to make the holidays – holy days – more festive. One could also argue the hoopla keeps them front and center in our society, making them a time of great happiness and expectation for children, who will come to understand the greater significance.

That, of course, brings us to a very important word in the debate over making Christmas more politically correct: tradition.

Some who argue against the erosion of religion at Christmas are really opposed to change – change in the way they celebrated Christmas. An attack on those traditions is an attack on our deepest sentiments and hap-

piest memories. Secular or religious, any attempt to alter Christmas hits at the one thing many of us equate with blissful feelings of goodwill.

There is some solace to be found in the fact that Christmas has always been about change. Many of those things we think of as representing Christmas, from the tree to Santa Claus, are fairly recent constructs – the Christmas tree emerged as a popular symbol in the late 19th century, and St. Nicholas as a right jolly old elf emerged in the early part of the 20th.

Historically, Christmas was at times deemed inappropriate by various Christian sects – marking it was illegal in 16th century England, and in parts of the U.S. colony in the 17th.

Today, those of us who partake of Christmas do so in our own way, often with traditions of our own – no one can take that away. Go out and have a Merry Christmas.

Ivory Coast’s election woes indicative of Africa’s divides A International ll the foreigners and about half the Ivorians agree that Alassane Ouattara won last month’s presidential election in Ivory Coast – but not the southerners, who say that it was their man, Laurent Gbagbo. So the Election Commission declared Ouattara the winner, and the Constitutional Council declared Gbagbo the winner.

It’s been eight years now since Ivory Coast, once the richest country in West Africa, was divided. This election was supposed to end the division, but it has just perpetuated it. Maybe it’s time to accept that Ivory Coast is two countries, not one.

Once the notion of dividing an African country in two was unthinkable.

The basic rule of the old Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was that the former colonial borders must remain inviolable, since if they could be changed there might be a generation of civil wars.

But there was a generation of civil wars anyway – in Nigeria, Angola, Ethiopia, Liberia, Congo and Sudan, to mention a few. There are far more ethnic groups in Africa than there are countries: some vie for dominance within the existing borders, while others simply want to secede and form their own countries.

There is also a religious split between mainly Muslim and predominantly Christian regions that extends right across the continent, but the dividing line runs through a number of countries, not between them. From Ivory Coast in West Africa to Sudan on the Red Sea, the north of every country is Muslim, and the south is Christian.

The ban on division was breaking down even before the OAU was replaced by the African Union in 2002.

GWYNNE DYER Eritrea’s secession from Ethiopia in 1993 was accepted by the OAU, although the subsequent secession of Somaliland and Puntland from Somalia has not received official blessing. And next month southern Sudan will almost certainly secede from the rest of the country in a referendum overseen by the African Union.

It’s becoming almost commonplace – and maybe Ivory Coast is a suitable case for treatment. It enjoyed three decades of peace and prosperity under the rule of its first post-independence president, Felix Houphouet-Boigny, but since his death in 1993 there has been almost continuous political upheaval.

Finally, in 2002, rebel “New Forces” in the army seized control of the Muslim north and split the country.

It has remained split ever since, and there are some 8,000 United Nations peacekeepers in the country. But neither negotiations nor outside pressure have ended the division – and neither have elections.

Reunification was supposed to be achieved by the recent election, which was closely scrutinized by all manner of foreign observers from Africa and beyond. Almost everybody voted on the basis of ethnic and religious loyalties, and the winner was a Muslim northerner, Alassanne Ouattara. He got 54.1 per cent of the votes, to 45.9 per cent for the incumbent, President Laurent Gbagbo.

Gbagbo is a Christian southerner, and he lost because there are a few hundred thousand more people in the Muslim north of the country. But he did control the Constitutional Court, which promptly declared that hundreds of thousands of northern votes were invalid, either because the voters in question were actually foreigners, or because they simply didn’t exist.

So Ouattara was inaugurated as president at a luxury hotel in Abidjan guarded by United Nations troops, with the blessing of the UN, the African Union, the European Union and the United States. But at the presidential palace, guarded by the Ivorian army, Gbagbo was also sworn in for a new term as president. “We didn’t ask anyone to come and run our country,” said Gbagbo defiantly. “Our sovereignty is something I am going to defend.”

The African Union is trying very hard these days to ensure that electoral results are respected in Africa, so it has suspended Ivory Coast’s membership until Ouattara is actually in power.

Since Gbagbo still has the support of the army and controls the state television channel, however, it will be very hard to get him out. Besides, the rights and wrongs of the situation are not as clear-cut as they seem.

Because Ivory Coast, the world’s biggest exporter of cocoa, was the richest country in West Africa, for decades it received a large flow of immigrants from the poorer countries to the north, Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso. The immigrants were all Muslims, and their languages were closely related to Dioula, the dominant language of northern Ivory Coast. They were all

Christmas can be found by digging below the surface N

othing gets my blood boiling quite like traffic. As much as I enjoy the Christmas season, the increased number of cars on the road is provocation enough to land me on Santa’s “naughty” list. Throw in the kind of conditions we got with Sunday’s snowstorm, and I’m destined for a lump of coal.

There are more people driving everywhere, but the frustration mounts the closer you get to a mall.

In the vicinity, there are very few jolly drivers. Get into the parking lot, and all bets are off – the spirit of Christmas absolutely does not apply while finding a place to park.

Inside the mall, it’s usually not much better. Hot, tired and broke (or on their way to one, two or all three), shoppers walk in circles looking for just the right gift before ultimately finding something – anything – so they can get out of that place. The smiles diminish as the countdown to Christmas grows shorter. Working in that environment must be akin to a new level on Dante’s list.

In short, I’m not overly fussy about the shopping component attached to the season.

Many people, of course, revel in the shopping, taking special joy in finding bargains in the process. My paternal grandmother was just such a person. She was a constant shopper, never more so than at the yuletide; the summer she died, cleanup efforts at her place revealed a closet packed with all kinds of goodies, many of them earmarked for a Christmas still months away.

While she enjoyed the thrill of the hunt, many of us aren’t so fond of the chore most linked to the commercialization of Christmas. Sure, we all like receiving gifts, but that’s not really what the celebration is all about.

The day could never come soon enough, and it was always still pitch dark out when you got up to see what Santa had left you.

Gradually, the holiday became more about enjoying the company of family and friends, many of whom you hadn’t seen all year. My fondest memories are certainly linked to those get-togethers, rather than the stuff I got. Those feelings are even more pronounced given that many of those people are no longer around to argue over who gets a drumstick or the recipe for the perfect eggnog.

Still, there are holiday traditions to uphold. They link Christmas past with Christmas present. Take Santa Claus, for instance. We’re all familiar with the famous editorial that tells us, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus …”

If Church thought we lived in a skeptical age more than 100 years ago, what would he make of society today? It’s unlikely he would identify at all with where we have gone.

We continue, of course, to tell our children about Santa Claus. As they age, they too develop pangs of doubt.

And, because kids seem to be growing up faster all the time, the onset of disbelief comes sooner and sooner – probably not aided by living in the

Internet age.

That perhaps is the least of our worries, however. Maybe we should be asking if there really is a Christmas spirit.

Certainly many of us hold Christmas in our hearts, if only because yuletide events are among our most cherished childhood memories. Increasingly, however, those old notions of Christmas have either come under attack or gone by the wayside.

For Christians, there is the significance of celebrating Christ’s birth – and all that it entails – in observing the holiday. But even among that group, Christmas has become a more secular event: the holiday we celebrate today, with its grab-bag of “traditions,” is the product of many inputs beyond the birth of a baby boy some 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem.

Of course, Christmas has become highly commercialized – some of the symbols we use today were in fact created by marketers (the image of Santa Claus developed by Coca-Cola, or Rudolph the Montgomery Ward Reindeer) – almost to the point of overkill. But there has always been something – a feeling in the air perhaps – that made the season lift the spirits beyond anything the so-called

greeting-card holidays could ever do for us. That feeling of warmth and goodwill, no matter your take on Christmas, was tangible; in some ways, it appears on the wane today as business, stress, and political correctness intrude on the holiday – much as they do on our lives as we progress from childhood into our adult lives.

That is undoubtedly a shame.

The goal, then, is to recapture some of that zest, that anticipation and wonder that came with the Christmases of youth. At the same time, there is the need for an adult appreciation of what a timeout from the “real world” can mean for the soul.

It’s easy to get caught up in the shopping, the dinner preparations, the running around, and a host of other complications, but if there was ever a time for simplifying things and seeing the world through lessjaded eyes, it is now.

With the approaching offer of renewal that is the New Year, Christmas is, after all, the one time of the year where we can actually believe that peace on Earth and goodwill toward others might actually be viable options – just like the message in all those carols we hear.

southerners will always think they have been cheated if their candidate loses, while northerners will always insist that the vote was legitimate.

The problem has crippled Ivory Coast for almost 20 years, and it will not go away. Mercifully, the killing so far has only been in the thousands, not the tens or hundreds of thousands. But if Ivorians can’t resolve the current dispute quickly, it may be time to consider a divorce.

May the holidays bring plenty of friends and family to your fireside and happiness and joy to your heart.

or long-time Elmira residents Wayne and Cheryl Lamers, their latest business endeavour happened almost by accident.

One day last May they were driving through the Birdland Plaza on Oriole Parkway, when they saw that the old Tawco Cleaners was closed. The couple, who had always dreamed of starting their own business, took it as a sign.

“We were looking for an opportunity for quite a while already, and we just by chance happened to drive through the mall,” said Wayne. “That’s really when we started looking seriously at the laundromat opportunity and started doing the homework and research, and asking ‘is this viable, will it work?’ and we kind of had to educate ourselves on the laundromat industry.”

Wayne, who works for Crystal Clear Water Centers in Waterloo, had some experience with laundromats, and when the couple saw the need in

the community, they decided to jump on the opportunity. After some hefty negotiating with the landlord of the building and receiving a loan from the Wellington-Waterloo Community Futures Development Corporation, they were well on their way to owning their own business, and Scrubbles Laundry and More was born.

The business will offer laundry services to the community through 18 brand-new stainless-steel high-efficiency washing machines, as well as 12 dryers. The largest machine can actually handle up to six traditional loads of laundry in one load, cutting down dramatically on the amount of time customers will spend doing their laundry.

The store includes a play area for children, a flat-screen television, free coffee and wifi internet access. The Lamers have also invested in a special sporting-equipment sanitizer that uses ozone to kill bacteria

a n d take the stink out of hockey, football or firefighting gear – sure to be a popular commodity in the hockey-mad town of Elmira.

They also have a second component to the business called Scrubbles Pet Wash and Spa, which will be a completely selfserve pet washing area in the back of the laundromat with its own entrance. Patrons can come in and take their time washing and grooming their dogs, and the Lamers have also hired a professional groomer with more than 10 years experience to perform on-site grooming as well.

The store is 1,950 square feet in total, with about 1,300 dedicated to the Laundromat facilities in the front and about 500 square feet for the spa in the

back. While Cheryl intends to handle most of the day-to-day operations herself, the couple says that they also intend to hire one or two part-time attendants as well.

“We really feel that even though in the past laundromats were mostly unattended, it would be better if it was attended because people might need help, and customer service is big for sure,” said Wayne.

For now Wayne intends to keep his job with Crystal Clear Water Systems in Waterloo where he has worked for many years, but Cheryl has quit her 25-year career as a hairdresser to work on their business full time.

“I knew I couldn’t do hair for the rest of my life. Even though I loved it, it’s tough. So I’ve gone from doing people’s hair to folding towels,” she laughed.

Wayne says that the costs of doing laundry at Scrubbles will be very competitive given the prices of water and hydro, especially with the new smartmeter technology in Ontario.

Prices will range from $3 for a regular washer, up to $9 for the largest machine.

The spa will also vary from $15 to $20, and there is no time limit on how long owners can work on their pets.

The doors haven’t even opened yet and customers are already streaming in.

“We’ve already had people come in and say ‘oh you’re not open yet?’ Someone even came with a full laundry basket,” said Cheryl.

Canadian poinsettia producers take a natural approach

G

etting an agricultural chemical registered for use in Canada is an exercise in itself, with among the strictest safety guidelines anywhere in the world. Some say the process is overly cautious, while others believe it’s necessary to protect citizens. In any case, it makes the cost of introducing a chemical enormous.

And if the market for that product is relatively small – relative to, say, the U.S. – a company might deem it not worth the effort.

Such is the case with our most traditional Christmas season flower, the poinsettia. To get it just right for shipping, growers need to manipulate its growth. It can’t be too tall and spindly – ideally, it should be about 2.5 times the height of its pot – or shipping is difficult and more expensive. Uniform, targetted height can cut transportation costs by 20 per cent, by allowing more plants to be racked and loaded onto short- and longdistance delivery trucks.

As well, poinsettias must bloom at just the right time. Of course, that time depends on which side of the Canada-U.S. border you’re on. American Thanksgiving is when they start buying poinsettias there. Here, it’s later, in December.

To help flower producers hit these moving targets, growth inhibiting chemicals are available. But not all products are registered for use in

Canada, nor are they likely to ever be, because of the cost and the small market here.

So how do Canadian flower producers compete?

Over the years, they’ve turned to nonchemical approaches – in part, because they had to, owing to a dearth of available products here. But they’re also motivated by the interest in plants that are less manipulated with inhibitors. That doesn’t mean producers are growing organic flowers; poinsettias still need an appreciable amount of inorganic fertilizer to get the young plants to grow to maturity, from July or August until November or December. However, there’s no question the movement towards more natural production approaches has reached the flower industry too.

Plant agriculture Prof. Theo Blom of the University of Guelph touched on some of these approaches at a News@ Noon session on campus earlier this week. There, he described his team’s research underway with support from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Flowers Canada and

fertilizer regimes. Research is on now in Blom’s greenhouse at Guelph with 50 various fertilizer and nutrient recipes to see which ones will turn out plants that are just right.

Many of the non-chemical approaches for controlling plant height came from growers who noticed that when they employed a certain technique, they achieved more desirable results.

But they couldn’t describe the science behind it, which is where Blom and his team come in.

So when you marvel at the beauty of your holiday poinsettia, spare a thought for the producers who grew it – and for the researchers who’ve helped get it just right.

There are completely new gas lines and electrical as well.

So literally everything was stripped out.

t is not uncommon to see the changeover from hordes of Halloween decorations – ghouls, goblins and gravegrave stones – to Christmas paraphernalia – SanSan tas, snowmen and silver bells – happen almost instaninstan taneously in shopshop ping malls. Children have not yet finished sorting their trick-ortreating loot when the first Christmas tree is standing proudly in a store window.

While this might seem like a marketing ploy to some, it is simply the way of life for Elmira’s Gloria Lillico.

“I start putting up the decorations in the Novem first week of Novemmoth ber,” said the mother of two boys and grandmother to three more. “I do a little bit

at a time, until it is all up and ready.”

And even with two months to prepare, Lillico’s decorative efforts are no small feat.

The living room of her Birdland home is lined, several rows deep, with statues of snowmen, Santa Claus, angels and perhaps the most impressive part; the ‘village,’ a community of more than 100 Christmas-themed houses that fill a table at one end of the room.

“Some of the first ornaments came over with me from England when I moved here in 1978,” said Lillico of the collection’s origin. “And I have just kept adding to them. I have picked up a few here and there each year for between 25 and 30 years. It just keeps growing.”

And despite the living room, kitchen, spare room and even bathroom being donned with festive gear, Lillico still has some ornaments leftover, many of which are stored in the basement.

“The question that people always ask me is where the ornaments go when it’s not Lil Christmastime,” said Lillico. “Well I tell them that I have fruit shelves which are not used as fruit shelves anymore. Some of the Santas go underneath a workbench, or into an old suitcase. Some way or another, they all find their place.”

But she doesn’t mind the job of packing and unpacking all the ornaments. Christmas is one of her favourite times of year so starting the festive season early and finding places for each piece is a challenge she enjoys.

“Each one has their own story, their own reason for being there,” she explained.

“I have one that reads ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ when you turn it on. I had a friend who used to read that story every year and each time I turn it on, it reminds me of him.”

a designated theme, w i t h ornaments ranging from gingerbread houses, to Santas of all sizes, cardinals, soccer balls, snowmen, lighthouses, England and cats, to name a few. Many of the pieces light up, make noise and move to the tune of a Christmas carol.

“I would say I use between 50 and 60 batteries each year, easily,” said Lillico. “But each year I take them out and I save them so I don’t need to go out and get more the next year.”

And despite the effort it takes to get all the ornaments in their proper place, Lillico says her time is very well spent, something she is sure of every year when visitors come to her house and their faces light up with amazement at the display.

Take time for some indulgences, despite the holiday chaos

T

was the week before Christmas and all through the house ... was chaos!

At this time of year so much is going on between work, shopping, cooking, end-of-year parties, Christmas vacation, and of course, the gathering of family and friends to celebrate various religious holidays.

Not sure about your families, but with us, most of the holidays revolve around food traditions. Being of Polish background, Kirstie gets to enjoy homemade perogies on Christmas Eve. Her husband, on the other hand, holds the annual ‘Boxing Day Pizza Party,’ a tradition he grew up with.

Aside from the traditional feast, Jody’s family gathers for lunch at the iconic ‘Harmony Lunch’ for their legendary hamburgers on Christmas Eve day.

Over the holidays, Jody and I treat ourselves to some food luxuries that we often serve our clients, but –believe it or not – we don’t normally indulge in! Oozey brie cheese with trendy crackers, toasted nuts and other munchies, or even crab legs and other seafood.

After stopping into T&J Seafoods this week (on Elm Street in Kitchener, off of Strange Street), we realized that seafood is definitely one of those luxuries that people tend to gravitate towards around the holidays. One of their biggest sellers at this time of year is their house-smoked salmon.

They make both hot and cold smoked salmon. The former being the kind that literally flakes when handled, and has a more ‘cooked’ appearance.

Their signature cold-smoked salmon (the stuff folks are lined up for) is cured first with salt and sugar, and then oak-smoked to produce a beautiful melt-in-your-mouth texture when carefully sliced thin. Serve this one on its own, simply with some bread, pickles and cream cheese.

The hot smoked salmon is a fabulous quick fix dip or even an addition to pasta or rice. We’ve also included an easy cracker recipe: if you can make cookies, you can make crackers!

he Kings continue to keep pace with the rest of the Midwestern Conference leaders after splitting their past two games, a 5-4 home loss to the Listowel Cyclones last Sunday, and a convincing 5-0 road win over the Kitchener Dutchmen on Tuesday night.

As of Thursday, Elmira is tied with Brantford for third in the conference with 40 points, nine behind conference-leading Stratford who have two games in hand over the Kings.

Sunday’s afternoon tilt against the Cyclones was the first game in a week for the

Kings, and they showed some rust out of the gate. Matt Smith got the start in net, and was sharp early on as he made a big shoulder save just 15 seconds into the first, and was forced to make a series of big saves just moments later after a turnover by Brady Campbell in the slot.

Listowel eventually cracked Smith 7:01 into the first on the powerplay. The Kings keeper made the initial save on a Bobby Cook shot, but the puck went right to Caleb Cameron who made it 1-0 on an easy tapin.

Elmira actually outshot Listowel 15-10 in the period, but couldn’t generate much of-

fence.

“We started pretty slowly,” admitted head coach Geoff Haddaway, “but I thought from about the 10-minute mark of the first to about halfway through the second, I thought we played a really strong 20 minutes.”

Elmira did get on the score sheet just 0:55 into the second period on Baleshta’s 13th of the season from Andrew Smith and Spencer MacCormack. The goal drew a thunderous cheer from the fans, as hundreds of teddy bears rained down onto the ice as part of the Kings teddy bear toss. The game had to be paused for about five minutes

as members of the girls Woolwich minor hockey picked up the bears and loaded them into the back of a pickup truck.

The pause in play didn’t seem to affect the Kings too much, as Jarred Parent gave the Kings the lead at 4:11 on a nice tip. Josh Woolley won the draw to the right of the Listowel keeper, and Parent tipped the Cory Genovese point shot over the goalie’s blocking arm.

The Kings, however, got into penalty trouble after that goal, which sucked some of the life from their game. They surren-

pecial teams were the deciding factor Dec. 11 as the Wellesley Applejacks lost 5-4 on the road in Hagersville.

Six of the nine goals were scored on the powerplay, and a total of 23 penalties were handed out to the teams in an infraction-filled affair. Wellesley finished 3-for-7, while Hagersville went 3-for-9 with the man advantage.

“It was one of the poorest

refereed games I had seen in a long time,” said head coach Kevin Fitzpatrick. “They were just inconsistent, that is probably the best way to put it.”

Wellesley played a solid first period that saw both teams assessed six penalties, and in which the Hawks outshot the Jacks 13-12. Apple Jack Matt Aspden had the only goal of the period at 17:25 on the powerplay, unassisted.

Corey Way gave the visitors a 2-0 lead just 0:48 into the sec-

ond period with another powerplay goal, from Eric Parr and Read Shantz. From there the Jacks looked poised to steal one on the road, but Hagersville had other plans.

The Hawks would respond by scoring four unanswered goals to finish the period – three of them on the powerplay – to take a 4-2 lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes. The Jacks were badly outplayed, and were outshot 21-11 in the second.

“We blew a two-goal lead and took a number of bad penalties. The second period was not a good period,” said Fitzpatrick. “It was the worst we had been outshot all year.”

Young fans of the Elmira Sugar Kings should have their skates in tow Sunday afternoon. Immediately following tomorrow’s game against the Guelph Hurricanes at the Woolwich Memorial Centre, they’ll get a chance to Skate with the Kings.

The freshman was also named the ECAC West Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 28, her first such honour. Zach scored three goals (two of them gamewinners) and added an assist in that weekend’s sweep over Amherst.

Tyler Varga from Cameron Heights was named the winner of the Doug Shuh Award as the league’s top player.

Please don’t misunderstand me.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t show your hunting dog some affection. After all, they are loyal companions who deserve some type of recognition.

All I’m saying is that it should be done appropriately. That’s why, in my household, we have settled on the classic European kiss on each cheek. Oh sure, we’ll peck on the lips on special occasions like the completion of a particularly tough retrieve – but we never use tongue.

That’s just weird.

So, if I must summarize my personal viewpoint on the matter, it is this. All things considered, in the end, kissing a dog is not good.

On the lips, however, it’s really up to you.

I mean, if you feel that this is the only way that you can show your hunting dog affection, there’s actually no scientific reason to prevent you from doing this. Experts believe that there’s no risk of a viral

The real danger, to me at least, is where this leads. I mean what if that kiss isn’t all that great? Suddenly, things just got really awkward.

From that point on, you pass each other in the duck blind. Sure, you make the obligatory small talk, nod politely and give each other friendly pats on the rump.

But you both know that it’s not working – that the chemistry is

not there. Still, you’re in a longterm commitment and you want to make it through the duck season.

You know it’s not just about the physical aspect of it all. So, when someone suggests counselling, you decide it’s worth a try, even though the dog isn’t so sure.

All this is just another reason why it’s probably best not to kiss your dog. Heck, even if you resolved the awkwardness it would just lead to spoiling your dog further and feeding it more. Next thing you know, it’s all about heavy pets. And that’s plain wrong.

f you really take the time to sift through all the important things online, you eventually arrive at issues that are critical to the human condition. This morning, for instance, I read about both sides of the all-important dog-kissing debate.

I’m an outdoorsman who spends an awful lot of time in the company of hunting dogs, so this obviously piqued my interest. I mean, this article touched upon the big questions. Is it OK to kiss a dog? If so, exactly what type of kissing is appropriate?

For the record, I’m not a dog smoocher. And I’m not just saying this because my dog finds me unattractive and just wants to be friends. Nor do I hold this viewpoint because my dog is emotionally distant and not prone to displays of outward affection – to others, at least.

No, I legitimately believe that kissing a dog is unsanitary. Who knows where that mouth has been?

And, let’s be honest, that breath is not exactly minty fresh either.

And, let’s not kid ourselves, the dog is just as bad.

Besides, unless you have a slab of raw liver between your teeth, a kiss means nothing to a hunting dog. By the way, if you’ve ever found yourself trying to kiss a dog by the slab-of-raw-liver method,

“It just seems like you have those games throughout the year where you go ‘oh it might be stacked up against us here,’ but it was a 60 minute effort.

“Kurt Martin had an outstanding game and gave us every opportunity to win, but we just did not have a good team effort and we had ample opportunity to take it to overtime, and we didn’t.”

Fitzpatrick said that although injuries and school exams have played a role in the

team’s recent slide, the team needs to do a better job of adjusting to the teams and players they are facing.

“That’s one thing the guys have to learn, we have to adapt to the teams. One of the top players in the league had three goals against us, and you have to be aware of where they are on the ice,” he said.

“We’re going to do a few things differently in practice and try a couple things, but we have to be more responsible.”

First big snowfall helps prepare the slopes With base of manmade snow, Chicopee Ski Club ready for this weekend’s opener James Jackson

T

he region may have gotten its first real blast of winter last weekend, but the flakes have been flying at Chicopee Ski Club since Dec. 3, when the snow guns first fired up on the hill. They’ve been going ever since to get the hill set for this winter’s ski season.

“The weather has been very amenable for snow making,” said Lori McCrae, the manager of business development at Chicopee, adding that they need temperatures of about minus-four degrees for a couple days in order to start making snow.

“We’re officially opening Saturday (today), right on schedule.”

McCrae said the recent dump of snow has been a welcome addition to the hill, but added that the club would have been ready to go regardless.

“It’s very good to have the natural snow on top of the manmade snow, (but) it’s definitely an ambience thing. It’s not required because of our snowmaking capabilities.”

She said that what is even more critical than the snow that falls from the sky is the way their crews groom and prepare the manmade snow.

“Once the base is set in the first two weeks through snowmaking and natural snow, then we have the groomers out evening it out and making sure it’s of excellent condition, safe and enjoyable for skiing.”

The club has no minimum depth for its base before they open up the hill, McCrae said, but that they prefer to wait until a base of 30 centimetres of snow has built up in order to cover all of the rocks, grass, and other obstacles that might be on the hill. She said the base is at 30 cm and has been for about a week now, so they are ready to go.

They will have eight runs open today, with plans to open more in the coming weeks as more natural and manmade snow accumulates on the hills. The runs that are open range from easy to black diamond, giving skiers of all skill levels something to look forward to. They will also have four lifts open to the public.

Chicopee is opening its annual Christmas ski camps on Monday as well for kids who will just be starting their winter break.

“That’s really great for parents who are looking for something for their kids to do while they’re out of school before Christmas,” McCrae said.

The domestic cat is one of the most “talkative” of mammals, making more than a hundred different vocal sounds. How chatty a cat is depends on its breed, with Siamese being famous communicators, whereas Persians and Abyssinians have little to say. In addition to the caterwaul, cats chatter, chirrup, growl, hiss, purr (for pleasure or for healing), scream, yowl and meow a-plenty.

The familiar meow is used mainly to communicate with humans, such as “Where’s dinner?” or “I want to go out.” Among wildcats and ferals, says O’Neill, the meow is used only by kittens.
