Around 9:20 a.m. emergency crews were called to the scene after the eastbound truck, carrying a load of cattle, struck the driver’s side of the northbound Chevrolet Malibu attempting to cross the intersection. The driver of the car,

The issue arose Aug. 12 when Region of Waterloo workers installed a new 80 km speed limit sign about 100 metres closer to the settlement area of Bloomingdale along St. Charles Street West, drawing the attention of resident Audrey O’Hearn. She said she’s concerned that it will only encourage already speeding motorists to drive that much faster near her home, mere metres from the road’s edge.

“I have children and it’s just not safe,” she said in an interview Tuesday afternoon. “People treat it like it’s a highway as opposed to a residential area.”

The problem stems back to several years ago, when O’Hearn says a motorist successfully fought a speeding ticket in the area by arguing that the ‘80 km begins’ sign was more than 500 metres from the intersection of Sawmill Road

Speeding: Residents want traffic to slow down > CONTINUED FROM COVER and St. Charles, the legal limit under the regional bylaw at the time.

As a result the signs were moved closer to town to comply with the bylaw, but after more than three years of residents complaining about excessive speeding on the road, regional council decided to change that bylaw last January to extend the 50-km/h zone that incorporates the main settlement area of Bloomingdale by an extra 100 metres on St. Charles Street.

received 19 responses, 14 of which were in favour of expanding the 50-km/h zone, an area of road which sees some 4,100 vehicles every day according to a regional study.

However, last Friday O’Hearn’s husband Mark Koppeser returned home from work to find that the 80 km signs had been moved about 100 metres closer to town than they had been the previous day.

O’Hearn said that she and other residents received no information from the region on the movement of the sign, and that she has talked with police officers conducting speed traps in the area who also had no idea of why the signs were moved, she said.

“It’s extremely frustrating, after we’ve gone through all this effort with the complaints and we’ve followed the process and it was just changed on a whim it seems.”

According to the

region, however, the signs were moved too far from the settlement area back in January; instead of being 600 metres from the intersection of Sawmill and St. Charles in accordance with the new bylaw, the signs had been placed 750 metres from the intersection.

“We identified that, and we have changed it back to the original 600,” said Mike Jones, the region’s supervisor of traffic, in an interview Wednesday.

Jones said the mistake was regrettable, adding he had informed O’Hearn via email earlier in the day of why the change was made.

“That’s unfortunate that it went in the wrong location and that would give the impression that we’ve moved it back to where they were before, but that isn’t the case.”

In the end, however, O’Hearn and her family are still concerned about the excess speeds in the

area which she said has caused photos and paintings to vibrate off the walls of their home.

Jones said his office does receive complaints on a weekly basis from residents throughout the region with regards to speeding concerns, and that they will be following up and conducting traffic studies in the area of Bloomingdale to determine how effective the movement of the sign has been in helping to slow motorists down.

He admits, though, that merely moving signs has little impact on speeders.

“The only way that we can reduce speed is to build up an area more than it is today, which is through the introduction of sidewalks, bike lanes, trees, medians and that sort of thing,” he said, adding that some of those measures are scheduled to be implemented in Conestogo on Sawmill Road.

Doing what he can for the kids

> Pendergast wins Liberal nomination Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Leeanna Pendergast will be seeking a second term when local voters go to the polls Oct. 6 in the Ontario general election.

Pendergast last week won the Kitchener-Conestoga Provincial Liberal Association’s nomination. She’ll square off against Conservative Michael Harris.

She has represented the riding since 2007.

“I’ve spent my entire life serving the people of Kitchener-Conestoga.

I know what it takes to raise a family and balance a budget, to improve access to healthcare and strengthen public education”, said Pendergast. “I will not assume our children’s future; I will continue to assure it.”

Over the years he has not only raised his own children but has been a foster parent and soon he will be taking a three- month leave from work to head to an orphanage in the Dominican Republic to teach the children how to repair tools, machines and small engines.

The Hawkesville resident, a mechanic by trade, is collecting shop, mechanic and power tools, as well as school and medical supplies and children’s personal needs like shoes, clothes and bedding in a 20-foot container to send down to the orphanage in San Pedro do Marcoris.

“It affects you when you when you see children in a Third World country,” said Leis. “You just know that you have to do something to help them. I can show them how to repair broken machines and engines. It is what I know and the least I can do.”

manent home for orphaned, abandoned and other at-risk children who live in conditions of extreme poverty, Leis will be helping to build “a future for these neglected kids.”

Four years ago, Leis and his wife Sharon helped their son Jody, the Christian education director at St. James Lutheran, send a 40-foot container to the orphanage full of school playground equipment, school and medical supplies.

“I always told my son, ‘you didn’t find NPH, it found you.’ It grabs you and you realize the organization is not just about improving the orphanage, it there to help the surrounding communities too,” said Leis.

Through a worldwide network of support organizations, the children at NPH are provided with food, clothing, shelter, medical care and an education.

Since its inception in 1954, NPH, which in English means “our little brothers and sisters,” has helped thousands of orphaned children through out the Caribbean and South America.

To date almost 17,000 children have been cared for

of service as house directors, medical assistants and office staff.

More than 240 children live at the orphanage in the Dominican Republic and through the program Leis hopes to give them a good understanding of a usable trade and a “vision of the future.”

The money was raised at the group’s annual hunting heritage banquet that was held at the Wellesley Arena in May. Be wary of online fraud, police warn August 10 >>11:20 PM | A Henry Street, Wellesley resident found a girl’s bike, purple in colour.

Police have obtained the bike and are holding it at the North Division station to be picked up by its rightful owner.

enter was reported on Sawmill Road near Katherine Street in Woolwich Township. Suspects broke into a construction site of a new home and stole copper wire and pipe as well as tools.

Police are still investigating.

three vehicles occurred on Victoria and Woolwich streets in Breslau. A 27-year-old Maryhill man driving a Toyota Corolla stopped at a green light to allow a police cruiser who had there lights on to pass through the intersection. The Toyota was then hit by a Hyundai Accent driven by a 29-year-old Waterloo man, whose vehicle was subsequently struck by a black Honda Civic driven by a 36-year-old from Guelph. No charges were laid. All three vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

Leis is looking for donations of shop tools from members of the community which may include safety glasses, diesel generators, electrical cables, sockets, hammers, tap and die sets, drills and ratchets as well as over

the counter medication that will be used to help with intestinal worms and rickets.

The shipping container will be sent down to the Dominican Republic this fall and Leis plans to follow in the January 2012.

“Our trips to the orphanage have become part of our story,” said Leis. “It has become so much a part of us it gives life value and gives me energy. It just doesn’t let go.”

On Sept. 10, Leis will be holding a container party where donations can be sent from the community.

The driver of the truck, a 45-year-old Elmira man, was un-

Police do not anticipate laying any charges, and the surrounding roads were closed for more than six hours while police concluded their investigation.

Wellesley seeking their fair lady Three candidates will vie for title of Ambassador at Wellesley-North Easthope Fall Fair Colin Dewar

t’s that time of year again: a new Wellesley North Easthope Fall Fair Ambassador is to be crowned.

This year three young hopefuls from across the townships are vying for the title.

Ashley Guild, 17,

from New Hamburg; Kelsey Gardner, 19, from Baden; and Tori Lynn Brick, 18, from Wellesley are looking to replace outgoing ambassador Justine Walker.

To win the crown the three young women will be interviewed by a board of judges

and on the night of the competition Sept.

14 will have to give a speech outlining why they are the best candidate for the position as well as answer one impromptu question.

As the newly crowned ambassador, they will have sev-

eral responsibilities over the course of the year. Their duties will include attending some of the fair board meetings in Wellesley and representing the Wellesley Fall Fair as well as the Wellesley Agricultural Society.

The new ambassa-

dor will get to take part in the Santa Claus parade, be part of the Wellesley Apple Butter and Cheese Festival, attend conventions and compete at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) with 100 other ambassadors from

across Ontario for the title of Ambassador of the Fairs. They are also expected to help recruit new fair ambassadors contestants and M-C the next fair ambassador competition while staying involved with the community.

Why have you decided to run for Wellesley fair ambassador?

I thought it would be a great experience and I heard that there would be a public speaking workshop and that would be a great opportunity to work on some of those skills. I am actually friends with Justine Walker the current ambassador and she has told me all about the position and it seems like a fantastic way to give back to a community and a great learning experience for me.

Why have you decided to run for Wellesley fair ambassador?

I think being an ambassador is a really great way to support your community and you get the chance to educate people, especially kids about farm life. If I become the ambassador I hope to participate in some field trips with students and hold demonstrations at schools to teach them more about farm life and how important farmers are to our community.

What is it that you enjoy about living in a small town?

I like how everybody is friendly; I like that you can walk down the street and not be afraid. Everyone is very welcoming. Everyone’s mom knows everyone in the community because they all grew up together. It is like a family and everyone is so supportive.

What do you enjoy about being from a small community?

Being from a small town everybody is very supportive and if you need something you know everybody and they will stand behind you. When I went to Scotland with my school’s rugby team we held fundraisers and the community really stepped up and helped us by donating to our team. People from a small town can be really encouraging and are willing to help you even if you are not related. Everyone works together.

Why have you decided to run for Wellesley fair ambassador?

My family has always been a part of the fair, my grandmother and mom are heavily involved in the fair so I have always had a taste of the fair and I thought it would be cool to get involved this year and participate in it as well. I think running for ambassador would be a great learning experience and I love to be involved in the community. I am kind of the cliché, classic country kid, I love spending time with my horses and animals outdoors.

Are you excited about moving to the city to attend school?

To be honest I am a little nervous going to the bigger city like Guelph as I am such a country kid, but I feel it is the best place for me because a lot of people around there do come from the country and share a lot of the same experiences I have.

Kays Sommer and a committee of parents and volunteers approached Wellesley council about three years ago with the help of the local Lions Club to pitch the idea of the splash pad to them. Although they were met with some tough questions, she said they were optimistic by the response of Kelterborn and the other councillors that evening.

The mayor took some time to congratulate the committee for their hard work, and to emphasize the team approach used to get the project done.

“You, the volunteers, are building a strong family unit within this community and to us at Wellesley Township that is very important,” he said.

Two large donor boards, one for corporate sponsorship and one for community sponsorship, were also unveiled.

The $260,000, 5,400-squarefoot project is the first of its kind in Wellesley. The park uses a recirculation system to recycle much of the water used by those enjoying the pad, and it includes an advanced UV filtration system that ensures the water is safe for use.

The Lions Club received an Ontario Trillium grant worth $75,000, a grant from the KW Community Foundation for $15,000, and another $6,000 from Farm Credit Canada.

An additional $80,000 was collected within the community from business owners, individuals, and through various fundraising initiatives.

“Promoting active and healthy lifestyles is fundamental to the work the Ontario Trillium Foundation has been doing since 1982,” said Peter Hinchcliffe who sits on the foundation’s board. “One of the ways we do this is through capital grants that allow groups to purchase equipment to help encourage physical activity and the grant that was awarded for this splash park is an example of the impact we’re making in communities across the province.”

The remainder of the money, approximately $80,000, was realized through inkind donations of labour, materials and supplies by local businesses.

“The smiles and the laughter whenever we walk by is what make this worthwhile,” added Kays Sommer.

“Keep enjoying it, keep smiling and bring your friends. This is just an incredible town.”

Region’s growth needs careful scrutiny

C

ompared to the detrimental population numbers in most of the world – a planet of 6.5 billion and counting – growth in the townships seems rather sedate indeed. Still, regional population forecasts show some fairly dramatic changes: over the next 20 years, by 2031, Woolwich is expected to hit 32,500 residents, up from 23,000 today, while Wellesley will reach 13,000, up from 10,000.

The largest of Waterloo Region’s four rural townships, Woolwich will still hold that place 20 years hence.

With Wilmot and North Dumfries seeing much larger jumps, Wellesley is expected to be the least populous in 2031, when the region’s overall population is forecasted to be 729,000, an increase of 26 per cent over the current figure of 540,000.

Such growth in the region is bound to put pressures on available land, especially in the townships where

farms are still the norm. The population forecasts raise the specter of longstanding talks about a pipeline from the Great Lakes in order to provide the area with water, already something of a scarce commodity, as recent hot, dry summers have shown.

On the growth and expansion front, the region has its growth management strategy in place, calling for fewer greenfield developments and more intensification in the downtown cores of the three cities, Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo. Attached to that goal is the light rail transit scheme designed to encourage public transit over private automobiles.

While the rail line may eventually extend to St. Jacobs and Elmira, the intensification plan doesn’t particularly apply to the townships, where much of the residential growth is typical single-family suburban homes. In Elmira, the trend is par-

The township will continue to be squeezed by the need for growth and the push to retain the small-town feel and rural qualities that brings new people here in the first place.

Growth brings an increased tax base and, in the case of commercial projects, jobs and opportunity. But growth also increases demand for municipal services, boosting costs.

Then there are the quality-of-life issues.

Unbridled growth, while paying short-term dividends, would ultimately become counterproductive.

strategy, while sometimes exasperating, helps preserve the characteristics that create a sustainable market for their projects.

We do not have to look far to see the downside of sprawl – the region itself is looking to control the negatives developing in the cities bordering on Woolwich, most notably the western and northern edges of Waterloo and the Kitchener’s west side.

A sustained boom, led by manufacturing and technology, has made the region’s economy something envied across the country. As the cities run out of developable land, more eyes will be on the townships – Woolwich’s geography making it the prime space.

That, however, is all the more reason not to rush in, to make sure the development plans for those remaining lands are the most effective for the region and, particularly, the township.

Was George W. Bush really a sleeper?

I

n spy talk, a “sleeper” is somebody who lives his life in the target country, keeping his nose clean and climbing up the ranks of the local hierarchy, until he reaches a position in which he can be of great service to his true employers abroad. It’s time to inquire if that description fits former U.S. president George W. Bush.

The question arises because Bush’s actions as president did much more for Iran’s interests in the Middle East than for those of the United States.

Consider, for example, a little-noticed recent development in the five-monthold confrontation between pro-democracy protesters and the Baathist regime that rules Syria with an iron hand.

The Baath Party seized power in Syria in 1963. Since 1970 it has been led by members of the Assad clan – the current president is Bashar al-Assad – and the Alawite (Shia Muslim) sect they belong to dominates the government and the intelligence services.

Alawites are only 10 per cent of Syria’s population, and are seen as heretics by many in the Sunni Muslim majority. The Baathist Party is as corrupt and incompetent as it is oppressive, and Syria under its rule has fallen into poverty and decay. It was bound to be challenged by the “Arab spring,” and non-violent mass protests against the Baathist monopoly of power began all across the country in mid-March.

The regime’s response has been brutal. Justifying its actions with the brazen lie that the protesters are “armed terrorist gangs,” Assad’s government has sent the Syrian army into one city after another to crush the demonstrations. At least 1,700 Syrian civilians have been killed, and an estimated

Last weekend, for example, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu bluntly ordered the Syrian authorities to stop the crackdown, warning that if the military attacks on Syrian cities do not end, “there will be nothing more to discuss about the steps that will be taken.” In diplomaticspeak, that is a very serious threat, and Turkey is Syria’s most powerful neighbour.

Most of the Arab world has also denounced President Assad’s regime, including the Arab League, the Saudi Arabian, Jordanian and Egyptian governments, and Yasser Abed Rabbo, the secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), who said recently that the Baathist regime’s actions are “a crime against humanity.”

Even Russia and China voted for the United Nations resolution two weeks ago that condemned the Syrian government for “widespread violations of human rights and the use of force against civilians.” However, the regime’s only real ally, Iran, remains loyal.

You can’t assume that George Bush was in Iran’s pay just because his invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq destroyed that country’s two most serious enemies in the region, the

Taliban regime in Kabul and Saddam Hussein in Baghdad. It could just have been deep ignorance and ideologically driven blindness. But how else can you explain this?

Iraq, almost uniquely among Arab states, supports and defends the Baathist regime’s actions in Syria.

Last week, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki warned the protesters not to “sabotage” the Syrian state. And this Iraqi government was created and nurtured by the Bush administration.

Before the U.S. invasion in 2003, Iraq was ruled by a rival branch of the Baath Party, led by Saddam Hussein.

He was a cruel and murderous dictator, though not significantly more so than the Assad regime in Syria. And Saddam Hussein was Iran’s worst enemy.

The Iraqi dictator was not working on nuclear weapons, as the Bush administration asserted, nor did he have any links to al-Qaeda, as it also claimed. George Bush had access to the output of the best (or at least the most numerous) intelligence agencies in the world, and they all privately knew that the claims were false.

Iraq had a nuclear weapons program before the first Gulf war in 1990-91, but it was comprehensively dismantled by United Nations teams in the mid-90s, and Iraq was subsequently under a strict arms embargo right down to 2003. Moreover, far from being an ally of al-Qaeda, Saddam Hussein, the leader of a strictly secular regime, was a target for its assassins.

First they came for your Internet connection

H

ow much is your privacy worth to you? Your liberty? Your fundamental rights? The answers may vary, but it’s a safe bet that you value these things more highly than does the government.

Along with a plethora of unnecessary and expensive law-and-order measures – including billions of dollars for American-style prisons – the federal government is quietly preparing to erode your civil liberties in its new omnibus bill.

As with the G8/G20 fiasco, Stephen Harper has shown he cares not for your rights, nor for your money – he’s prepared to trample the former, and squander the latter in the name of his priorities.

Oh, this is all couched in the language of increased safety, drawing heavily on terrorism rhetoric. This government is not the first to take authoritarian steps – that’s been going on for decades – but it certainly has been eager to take advantage of the post-9/11 frenzy, joining the U.S., UK and other nominal democracies in clawing back hard-won rights.

Many governments in the West have been quick to foster a culture of fear, allowing them to impose laws that would have been unthinkable before 9/11 and to spend vast sums of money on military, police and security programs that have enriched the coffers of a few at everyone else’s expense.

With each new measure that increases video, phone and Internet surveillance, overrides the judicial process and creates new enemies through wars, we edge a little closer to the kind of dystopian state Orwell, Huxley and countless others have warned us about. These are steps that support Benjamin Franklin’s oft-quoted warning that “Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little tempo-

While there is much to be worried and skeptical about in the Conservative’s omnibus bill, perhaps most troubling are the so-called lawful access rules. These would bring into being sweeping Internet surveillance requirements, forcing Internet service providers to track your online activities, disclose personal information to the government and put in place even more sophisticated monitoring equipment. The information would be turned over without any judicial oversight.

That prospect has Canada’s provincial and national privacy commissioners worried. Earlier this year, they signed a collective statement opposing the proposed legislation, in particular Bill C-52, the Investigating and Preventing Criminal Electronic Communications Act. “We believe that there is insufficient justification for the new powers, that other, less intrusive alternatives can be explored and that a focused, tailored approach is vital. In our view, this balance has not been achieved,” they wrote in a submission to the federal government While acknowledging that law enforcement agencies may need access to some information in some cases, they argued against sweeping powers that put personal privacy and freedoms at risk. To date, there seems to be no real justification for the proposals, beyond simply erod-

Last week, a group of academics and public interest organizations joined in on the call for an end to the Harper proposals, releasing a joint letter to the Prime Minister voicing their grave concerns about legislation that would allow for warrantless online spying on Canadians.

The letter calls on the government to, at minimum, give the proposed legislation an appropriate hearing instead of rushing it through Parliament.

“This legislation has never been to committee and MPs haven’t heard a single witness on what the government is proposing,” says Vincent Gogolek, executive director of the BC Freedom of Information and Privacy Association. “Given the serious concerns expressed by the privacy commissioners, burying these proposals in a catchall [crime] omnibus bill is reckless and irresponsible.”

“With so many raising concerns over this ‘chilling’ online spying scheme, the government must realize just how problematic its lawful access mandate is,” says Tamir Israel, staff lawyer with the Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy & Public Interest Clinic. “We hope that it reconsiders and acts to prevent what this serious erosion of our civil liberties.”

The government will refute such sensible arguments against its antidemocratic legislation by playing up fears and touting public safety.

he cycle of setting ‘em up and knocking ‘em down has been repeated countless times at Elmira Bowl. From novices to national champions, bowlers of all stripes have played at the five-pin alley since the doors first opened in 1961.

This month, Elmira Bowl is celebrating 50 years of service.

by Roland Ruppel, the First Street business exchanged a few hands before current owners Karl and Mary Jordan bought it in 1986.

For the last 25 years the

Jordans have been maintaining the alleys and improving the quality of the sport for Elmira’s bowlers.

An avid bowler himself, Karl decided to buy the business after spending time doing lane certification for the five-pin association in Bolton.

“I don’t know what made us decide to own a bowling alley. I just got it into my head that is was something that I wanted to do; when this came up I thought we would give it a shot. It’s a decent living if a family wants to work at it, but it takes a lot of work,” he explained.

Germplasm exchange and knowledge sharing has been integral to the advances in these breeding programs, says Crosby Devitt, manager of market development and research with the Grain Farmers of Ontario. For example, OMAFRAsupported researchers from the University of Guelph main campus and Ridgetown campus, and from federal research stations in Harrow and Ottawa, worked together to see these varieties produced.

Devitt says successfully introducing new soybean varieties is just the first triumph to come out of this project. He says he’s looking forward to seeing more results over the next few years in the other five crops the project covers –corn, winter wheat, spring wheat, oats and barley.

There’s no question genetically modified crops have become popular with many Canadian farmers, who planted about 20 million acres of them last year. Still, the challenge remains for the agriculture sector to demonstrate the value of crop protection in any form to the public. The sector must make reports like the ones mentioned here living reports, and get more than a headline of out them. At the same time the field crop alliance results were being reported, CropLife Canada, a pro-crop protection organization, released a new report claiming modern crop protection – which includes genetically modified crops –saves Canadian families millions of dollars every year.

The report says crop protection and biotechnology saves up to 70 per cent on any food that requires wheat flour or soy, 53 per cent on vegetables and 39 per cent on fruit.

t’s the nature of news – what’s hot today disappears tomorrow. Such was the case a year or so ago with the Canadian Field Crop Research Alliance, a coming together of field crop research interests in Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. The alliance’s creation was a banner headline in agriculture, being a creative and potentially ultra-effective approach to new field crop developments. Then, as many stories do, it left the radar screen.

But its participants didn’t. Last week, the Guelph-based Grain Farmers of Ontario put the initiative back in the spotlight when it announced 10 new soybean varieties had been developed through the alliance’s efforts.

That’s huge. Soybeans are Ontario’s biggest field crop. Any gains in this commodity’s genetics are significant to the overall agri-food sector. And gains happen through research and breeding.

The varieties have been developed under the broad umbrella of a three-year project called Advanced Canadian Field Crops Through Breeding, funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Some of new varieties had already been under development with support from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA).

“It is a shame that we have seen a decline because it’s a great sport for kids. In the youth leagues, a kid can go all the way to the national finals and it really doesn’t cost them anything,” said Karl.

As a benefit to owning the alley, the Jordans have toured the country because of all the national competitors that have practiced on the Elmira Bowl lanes.

“We have been from sea to sea, all because of the bowling alley,” said Mary. “We have been to Saskatoon, Lethbridge, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Newfoundland and Quebec and have gone as coaches and as cheerleaders and as support for our national participants.”

As part of the celebrations marking 50 years, the Jordans are inviting all past national and provincial competitors for the unveiling of the National Photo Quilt handmade by Mary. The final square of the quilt will be a photo of everyone together taken on Aug. 26 at the bowling alley.

“I just want to get as many people together as we can,” said Mary. “I have kept scrapbooks and newspaper articles from over the years and I will be putting together a display of the history of the bowling alley for the celebration.”

Having marked the facility’s anniversary, the couple has decided it’s time to retire, putting the bowling alley up for sale.

“We are ready to retire. I will be 66 at the end of August and I have been bitten by the travel bug. We are hoping to spend some time in our trailer and head south for the winter and then tour North America for the next three years. I think it will be great,” said Karl.

Whether or not the Jordans continue to operate the business it is a sport that Karl will never be able to leave behind.

“I still bowl twice a week. It’s a sport that anyone can do. We have league players as young as four years old to players in their late80s,” he noted. “It is very easy to do and you can have a lot of fun doing it.”

There will be a party held at Elmira Bowl on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. to mark the milestone.

t’s not very often that a teenager can turn their summer vacation into a truly life-altering experience, but that’s very much the case for a pair of Woolwich girls who spent three weeks in India helping to build a school.

Mackenzie Schultz of Conestogo and Emily Charron of Elmira returned Aug. 6 from what they say was an unbelievable experience. Fifty children in the region were sponsored by Research in Motion to travel to either Kenya or India as part of the Waterloobased tech company’s Build a Village campaign in conjunction with Toronto-based Me to We and Free the Children.

The two girls admit they experienced some culture shock when they first arrived in

Delhi, the national capital of India.

“When we first got off the plane everything looked normal because it was really developed,” said Schultz. “But right next to the developed sections were massive slums, and it was a shock to see that contrast right beside one another.”

While in India, the girls and 23 other students not only had the chance to help build a new school, they travelled the countryside and got to experience the rich culture of the nation first-hand through a so-called “day in the life” activity.

“We got to make their local cuisine and we got to do a water-walk and milk a goat, which was really interesting” said Charron. “We even helped repair a home. We just

got to experience how they would live.”

They also participated in a series of games and activities designed to increase their leadership and mentoring skills, and to help them realize the smaller facets of everyday life.

“For one activity, we had to write down 10 things that were really important to us and that we couldn’t live without, and by the end of the activity we had to have thrown nine of those pieces of paper into a fire,” said Charron.

“That really showed you what was important to you and it was an incredibly moving and emotional activity,” she added, noting that her final piece of paper had the word “freedom” written on it.

Perhaps the most touching part of their trip was getting

the opportunity to visit another nearby community where a school had already been built through an earlier Me to We construction aid project about five years ago.

The girls said it was motivating and rewarding to see how the fruits of their labour would pan out long after they had left the country.

“I thought it was amazing; it was so cool to see,” said Schultz with a smile, “because it was a group just like us who went and built the school.”

This is the first year that RIM has formed a partnership with Free the Children, and the company said that they are doing it to help empower and develop local youth leaders in the community.

Applications were accepted until Mar. 7 from students aged 14 to 18 who attend high school in the Waterloo Region and Guelph and Wellington County.

Students could write an essay or a speech, make a video or create artwork explaining why they wanted to go. They also had to be nominated by a teacher, coach, boss or mentor. There were two trips to choose from, India from July 15 to Aug. 6 and Kenya from Aug. 11 to 28.

“I wrote a speech on one of my friends whose little sister passed away,” said Schultz.

“She was an inspiration to me and really helped me see what was important.”

Schultz was the first student chosen to go on the trip as well, and her name was announced at the We Day celebration in

t’s really quite overwhelming and amazing, strolling through our busy local markets at this time of year. There is just so much beautiful bounty to choose from that we want it all! So often I buy so much stuff at the market, because I just don’t want to miss out on anything seasonal, that I get home and really don’t know what to do with it all.

This week we held a hands-on cooking class on salads. It may sound simple, but sometimes there are some tricks and techniques to get the most flavour out of our seasonal salads. The following ‘composed’ salad (as opposed to a ‘tossed’ salad) integrates two different cooking techniques that really bring out the sweetness, colour and flavour of vegetables: roasting and blanching.

Slow roasting the beets not only helps their skins to easily peel off, but it also intensifies their flavour and makes them sweeter. Blanching is something that restaurants do all the time to pre-cook vegetables, and to ‘shock’ in their bright orange, green or yellow colours.

The trick here is to use lots and lots of rapidly boiling water that is well seasoned with salt: it should taste like the ocean. Once the vegetables have reached desired tenderness (1-3 minutes, usually) they are to be lifted out of the boiling water with a slotted spoon or sieve and ‘shocked’ in ice water.

Finally, vinaigrettes. Splurge a little on good quality oils and vinegars. This is what most of our salads are dressed with, just two ingredients, so therefore it’s important to make them taste great!

A general ratio for a vinaigrette is one part vinegar to three parts oil.

Three local athletes win Dan Snyder scholarships James Jackson

hree local students got a financial boost for their studies this fall after being named the recipients of the Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship on Tuesday night.

Former Sugar King Jarred Parent was chosen for the Sugar King category, while Corin Metzger and Robyn Beckett were each named as Woolwich Community open category winners.

“Year after year we’re impressed with the quality of athletes and community members that we see apply for this award,” said Rick Weiss, one of the directors for the Dan Snyder Memorial Foundation who presented the three recipients with a plaque in the backyard of Graham and Lu Ann Snyder’s Park Avenue home.

“This is something we take a lot of pride in for Dan’s memory.”

For their efforts, the trio will receive $1,200 towards their post-secondary costs this year, as well as a nameplate on a trophy that is stored in the Woolwich Memorial Centre.

The award caps off a stellar year for Parent who helped lift the Kings to the Sutherland Cup championship back in May. Parent was named the team’s top defensive player at their annual awards gala, and also was awarded the Midwestern Conference’s Leroy Jamieson Memorial Trophy in March, which recognizes a

For Metzger, the award is a fitting addition to her whirl-wind summer as well after she recently returned to Elmira after participating in the inaugural U25

World Wheelchair Basketball Championships held at Brock University last month, in which Canada finished fourth.

“It’s definitely an honour to be recognized for such a prestigious award,” she said. “It’s great to be recognized as possessing some

of the traits as such a wellknown member of this community.”

Metzger is heading into her second year at Mohawk College where she is studying general arts.

True grit determines the leader of the pack I

have seen some very tough dogs in my time.

There have been bear hounds with faces scarred by claw and fang, muscular pit bulls frothing beneath studded leather muzzles, gruff Chesapeake Bay retrievers chasing ducks among the ice floes and snarling German Shepherds straining at the chains.

But – I’ll say it now – not one of those mutts is as tough as Callie, my 32-pound springer spaniel.

The other day she proved it too. She scooted across a gravel road again.

Scooting, of course, is something that dogs do from time to time just to show you that they aren’t as smart as cats.

Even so, in this case, I’m still not sure why it happened. Callie had nothing to prove. We already knew she wasn’t nearly as smart as a cat.

In any case, we were walking along the road and, without any warning or reason, she lifted her tail and lowered her butt to that sandpaper-like surface, and then she dragged it for an honest 10 feet, presumably to ease an itch. And, so help me god, she smiled doing it.

Smiled, I tell you.

Even Millie, our Labrador retriever, winced.

I suppose Millie could have been the reason for it all too.

Up ‘til that point, Millie had been bullying Callie. It was nothing serious, just the typical dog stuff: spontaneous head humping, bowling her

Yes, Millie had been in charge. But, that one simple act changed it all.

And though I had to hand it to Callie for showing Millie who was tougher, I also knew that this would mean trouble for the rest of us.

You see, ‘til then, I had been the pack leader.

But now even I couldn’t help but feel intimidated. I mean if she can do that with a smile on her face, what chance do I have disciplining her with a little swat behind the ears?

Like Millie, I knew I had been bested. And Callie knew it too.

As if to prove it, the moment we returned to the house she jumped up on the couch and snuggled in the pillows. She’s normally not allowed to do this and I told her so. But she just looked at me with fire in her eyes and other places and ignored me.

I immediately knew we were in for the kind of showdown that dog owners fear.

What followed wasn’t pleasant. There was plenty of cussing, a bit of violence and a whole lot of yipping, barking and snarling. I’m not proud of it, believe me, but in any man-dog relationship you need to firmly establish a pecking order. If you don’t, no one, including the dog, is happy or secure. So, that’s just what I set out to do.

And, I succeeded too. By the time it was over, there was no question of who was in charge.

So after I finished exposing my belly and got up, I asked the magic question: “Callie, do you want to watch more Animal Planet shows or should I get you another biscuit?”

That’s how thing stand right now. But believe me, by the time the next walk is scheduled, I will regain my rightful place as pack leader.

Provided, of course, I can stand scooting for at least 11 feet.

Changes already underway, team opens training camp Aug. 22 James Jackson

T

he road to the Elmira Sugar Kings defending their title as the Cherrey and Sutherland Cup champions begins on Monday night with the opening of training camp at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.

The defense of those titles won’t be easy, as the team witnessed some considerable turnover during the offseason.

Head coach Geoff Haddaway, who spent four years behind the bench in Elmira, decided to step down at the end of the team’s remarkable playoff run last season, while general manager Keith Stewart, who had a big hand in building the Sutherland Cup champs over the past four seasons, will still be involved this year but from the position of manager of hockey operations instead.

Replacing those two men is new head coach Dean De Silva, the former Waterloo Siskins head coach and a former assistant coach in Elmira under Haddaway four seasons ago, and GM Paul Jennings, the former general manager of last season’s first-place Guelph Hurricanes.

On the ice, the team is poised for a major overhaul as well.

With somewhere from 10 to 15 players returning, a good core of players still exists, but without key contributors like captain Josh Woolley and assistant

Jarred Parent – who both graduated from the Junior hockey program last season – combined with the fact that Cory Genovese will likely be patrolling the Kitchener Rangers’ blue line come September and forward Brad Kraus opted to sign with the St. Thomas Stars, the makeup of the team could be very different this season.

In total about 40 players will be at camp this week, vying for the approximately 25 spots available on the roster. Camp will consist of fitness training on Monday and Tuesday nights, followed by a pair of inter-squad games. The Kings will also suit up for five exhibition matches between Aug. 26 and Sept. 4.

“I’m able to see them in a game-like environment and also see what their coachability is like in practice and see how they carry over from what they learn in practice to the game,” said De Silva of their training camp schedule.

“It allows us to see what they can bring in their bag of tricks, as well as their work ethic and character.”

For the Kings, both the head coach and GM said they will value those last two qualities – work ethic and character – over pure talent. The GM also added that players had better be prepared to earn their roster spot in the coming weeks.

“At this point we haven’t made any decisions on any players yet

and we’re going to let Monday and Tuesday decide what we do there,” said Jennings. “No one is guaranteed anything.”

Despite this no-nonsense approach to preparing for the upcoming year, the head coach does admit that there is always the possibility of the “Sutherland Cup hangover” in which players may be under the false impression that they might not have to work as hard as they did last year to achieve the same results.

“There’s always that concern,” said De Silva.

“We may get it handed to us pretty good in September and October until the guys realize that team’s are going to show up and play their best against us every night, because Elmira has something that these other teams want.”

APPLY TO BE A MEDAL BEARER IN THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY RICK HANSEN RELAY The Rick Hansen Relay will be travelling through St. Jacobs and Elmira on Saturday December 3rd. You can be a part of the Tour by applying to be one of two Township of Woolwich Medal-Bearer representatives.

A medal-bearer must: • Be at least 13 years of age as of August 24, 2011. There is no maximum age limit.

• Have transportation to the assigned meeting point and from the finish of the Relay segment.

• Be able to participate unaccompanied in the two- to three-hour Medal-Bearer experience.

• Wear the Medal-Bearer uniform – created by Nike – provided by the Relay team for the duration of their experience.

Submissions: All submissions will be reviewed by Township of Woolwich Staff and the Mayor. Two medalbearers and two alternates will be selected.
