esidents opposed to plans for a gravel pit near Conestogo won a battle this week, but the war continues. Woolwich council’s decision to deny zone change and Official Plan changes requested

by Hunder Developments likely moves the debate to the provincial arena via the Ontario Municipal Board.

Still, it was reason for a full gallery of spectators to cheer Tuesday night as councillors backed a planning staff report recommending the applications be turned down.

Director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley argued the proposed aggregate operation presented a range of problems that make it inappropriate for the area.

“Concerns relating to geological resources, transportation impacts, visual impacts, water resources impacts, noise impacts, dust impacts and landuse compatibility have caused staff to be unable to conclude that there will not be unacceptable impact associated with the proposed Hunder gravel pit,” he said in recommending the township take a stand against the pit, which is

he clock ticking on the comment period, Woolwich has come up with a list of suggestions it wants the province to consider as it reviews plans for a biogas facility in Elmira.

The public has until Aug. 21 to provide input on the project, which has been the target of vocal opposition.

Stripped of any regulatory power by the Green Energy Act, the township has no direct say in the process – it can only make comments, like everybody else.

In the report approved this week by councillors, however, the township makes it clear the energy-producing facility does not comply with its zoning bylaw and Official Plan.

Solar panels make dollars and sense for Elmira church James Jackson

T

he future is bright at Trinity United Church. This week, the church on Arthur Street in Elmira underwent a dramatic facelift with the installation of a 10-kilowatt inverter solar panel system on the roof The project consists of 54 panels and thanks to a 20-year contract under the Ontario government’s MicroFIT program that pays 80 cents per kilowatt hour, the church hopes to generate up to $10,000 in revenue annually.

“Our church is expanding, especially the youth program, and we were looking for a way to get some stable funding,” said Miles Schwindt, a member of Trinity’s congregation and the man who, along with Chris Moore, spearheaded the idea of putting solar panels on the steel roof of the children’s wing of the

“This lines up with our goals because we’re investing in our youth, and we’re helping the environment as well and bringing in some money.”

The church approached three local companies for quotes on the project, with Kitchener’s Arcadian Projects chosen to complete the installation, which is estimated to cost a total of $65,000.

About three-quarters of the funding came via a loan from the United Church of Canada, with the other quarter drawn from the church’s reserve fund.

Their goal is to have their loan repaid within the next five years, allowing plenty of time for the panels to generate income for the church under the contract.

Unfortunately the rain this past week has delayed the installation of the panels, but the church hopes to have the power flow-

ing within the next two weeks after an inspection from the Electrical Safety Authority.

Schwindt said there were some reservations over the technology among some members of the congregation, specifically that the roof might leak, but after completing the necessary paperwork and submitting their proposal to Ontario Hydro in March, Schwindt said the project received final approval from church members in May. The idea for installing the solar panels initially came to Schwindt while driving the countryside and visiting farms for his job as a procurement manager for Maple Leaf foods.

He saw how solar panels had become a very popular form of revenue generation for farmers, and thought the technology could be applied to the church as well.

“It’s a no-brainer, if someone has a flat roof

facing south and without trees behind it, you should be putting solar panels on your roof,” said Schwindt, who also has a 10-kilowatt system on the roof of his Waterloo home.

“The payback is there and they do an excellent job.”

Miles Schwindt is confident that the new solar panels at Elmira’s Trinity United Church, which are to be installed on the roof of the children’s wing visible behind him, will help boost revenues and provide a brighter future for the church.

Elmira woman knows first-hand the value of cancer screening James Jackson

F

or Amanda Hergott, cancer has been a very real part of her life for the past decade.

About 10 years ago, her mother Wendy Bradley was diagnosed with cervical cancer, and six years ago Hergott also received bad news at her annual physical after her doctor found pre-cervical cancer cells and she underwent treatment.

Thankfully, both women are cancer-free today, and Hergott – an account manager for RBC in Elmira – will be walking for the first time in the eighth-annual Weekend to End Women’s Cancer to benefit Princess Margaret Hospital on Sept. 10 and 11 in Toronto.

She is part of Team RBC along with her mother and co-workers Crystal Vermette, Marianne Angelucci and Sue

Van Every.

“A lot of these walkers have been affected in one way or another and I think we need to have that awareness of how much it impacts everyone in the world,” said Hergott, who was only 22 years old when she received her pre-cancer diagnosis, and will be six-months pregnant the day of the walk.

“If we can get more money towards Princess Margaret and have women going in for more regular checkups it would have a big impact and lead to a lot more women being saved.”

Among Canadian women, breast cancer continues to be the most frequently diagnosed cancer, with nearly 23,000 new cases diagnosed last year alone – twice as many as lung cancer – and claiming approximately 5,400 lives in 2010. About 1,300 cer-

vical cancer cases are diagnosed each year, and nearly 400 deaths are attributed to the disease annually.

The weekend walk is an opportunity for those affected by cancer to remember lives that have been lost to breast or gynecological cancer, as well as a chance to celebrate the lives that cancer research is saving.

Since 2003, more then $100 million has been raised by walk participants, with proceeds going to fund research, treatment and prevention programs at Princess Margaret Hospital. The weekend consists of a two-day, 60-km walk or a one-day, 32-km walk. Hergott and her team have decided to tackle the two-day challenge, adding that the team has been trying to train ahead of the event.

“Sue and I just did a 6-kilometer walk [Monday] night

to try to get us into longer distances and we’re going to try and do that for this week and maybe double it next week and keep going from there.”

Team members have a fundraising goal of $2,000 each, and have undertaken numerous fundraising activities to reach that goal, including barbecues and bake sales, and they have just passed the halfway point. Overall, Team RBC has raised more than $250,000 for Princess Margaret, with the aim of reaching $407,000 in time for next month’s walk.

To donate to the cause, just drop by the RBC branch at the corner of Church and Arthur Street in Elmira where the team has set up a bank account to collect funds, and there is also a large jug near the front entrance to collect any spare change.

MCC invites teens to get thrifty for back-to-school Colin Dewar

here’s going to be a bit of a commotion at the MCC Thrift and Gift Store Aug. 16, when the store hold its second teen shopping night.

“It’s about getting teens excited about thrift we have

stocked piled all the brands that teens would like and the night is just for them: the music is going to be turned up loud and all over the store we will have clothing on display,” said Betty Marshall of the MCC Thrift Store.

The store has been saving brand name clothing including Abercrombie, American Eagle, Aeropostale, Hollister, Campus Crew, Blue Notes, and Streetwear over the last few months for this night.

“We have over 30 bins of

clothing we have saved for teens and college students,” said Marshall. “We want to promote thrift: they don’t have to go to the mall, we are an alternative and their purchase here helps many

> Elmira Legion seeks sign variance Woolwich councillors won’t fasttrack the Elmira Legion’s request for a new sign, but they will cut by half the cost of going through the process.

The organization is looking to a new pylon sign in front of its building at 5 First St. E. in Elmira in advance of a conference scheduled for mid-October. The sign it’s looking for requires an exemption from the township’s sign bylaw, however, requiring it to go through the variance process.

Hoping to speed up the procedure, the Legion asked council to deal with the matter at a meeting Tuesday night.

But sticking to their policies, councillors referred the Legion to the Committee of Adjustment, scheduled to meet next month. They will, however, cut by 50 per cent the standard sign variance application fee of $485.

Clayton Ash, representing the Legion, said the timing would be tight, but he expects the new sign could be installed if approved in September by the committee.

> Cameras set to roll in Hawkesville Welcome a new playground. Perhaps be on TV. From Monday through Wednesday next week, Sinking Ship Entertainment will be filming as the playground in Hawkesville gets a makeover as part of a new series to air on TV Ontario.

The program, known as Giver, will feature six 7-11 year-old kids in the community who must work together to reclaim and enhance a playground space. They must decide on what equipment to keep and what to scrap, what pieces to add and what murals to paint, and they need to find out what their community wants – in just three days.

While in Hawkesville, the Giver group will attempt to make Ontario’s largest sandbox, including a giant sandcastle and pyramid.

At the end of three days of activity, the community will have a brand new playground to call its own.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 2 p.m. on Aug. 17. The public is encouraged to come and be part of the episode.

Police to question suspect in cell phone extortion case August 4

olice are investigating a case of extortion after a Woolwich resident had their cell phone stolen and was contacted by a suspect demanding money for the return of the phone. The victim paid the suspect and the item was returned. Following the Aug. 4 report, police are investigating and will be contacting the suspect.

>>5:40 PM | A break-in occurred

at a Wellesley residence on James Court. Suspects broke into a garage and stole tools and personal items. The investigation continues.

>>8:15 PM | A fire occurred at a barn on Kossuth Road.

The structure contained 350 bushels of garlic and farming equipment. Fire officials determined the cause to be propane heaters used to dry out the garlic. Damages are estimated between $75,000 and $100,000. No injuries were reported.

Township. The police found the man who was then arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and was held until he sobered up the next day.

between a red Dodge and a dark green Chrysler Neon on Sawmill Road and Northfield Drive in Conestogo. No charges were laid and no injuries were reported. Both cars sustained damage and had to be towed from the scene.

a call about a pair of breakand-enters at a gravel pit on Halm Road near Maryhill Road in Woolwich Township and another on Middlebrook Road.

Suspects cut the locks to the gated gravel pits and stole large amounts of diesel fuel.

call about a drunk man walking along Geddes Street in Wellesley

>>1:00 PM | A break-in was reported to police from a residence on Cober Road near Shantz Station in Woolwich Township. A suspect entered the property by prying open a window sometime between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.

A large amount of electronic equipment was stolen as well as cash and jewelry. The investigation in ongoing.

>>4:50 PM | Police received

a call about a drunken man being dragged by a woman along Fountain Street and Riverbank Drive. The woman tried multiple times to drag the man to her car but was unable to do so and left him on the side of the road. Police picked up the man and held him until he sobered up.

August 6 >>7:30 PM | Police received

a call from On Star about a collision on William Hasting Line in Wellesley Township.

On responding, they found a vehicle in a ditch. It was determined that the vehicle had slipped as it went around a bend and slid into the ditch.

No charges were laid.

>>8:10 PM | A brand new blue

and white Cranked, mountain bike was found at the Elmira library. The bike had been in the bike rack for three days and is now at the Elmira police station, where it may be claimed by its rightful owner.

August 7 >>4:16 PM | Police received a

call from a Woolwich resident about a bank fraud. A few unauthorized withdrawals were taken out of the complainant’s account. The bank where the account is held is investigating the suspicious withdrawals.

August 8 >>2:45 PM | A minor fender bender occurred at the parking lot of the farmers’ market in St. Jacobs. No injuries were reported and minimal damages occurred to both vehicles.

>>5:15 PM | A resident of

Dalebrook Street in Elmira reported a theft from their home. The suspect stole a ring and watch. Police are investigating and will be speaking to a suspect soon.

August 9 >>9:40 AM | A collision involving

a horse-drawn buggy and an industrial work truck occurred at the roundabout on Arthur Street South and Sawmill Road.

The horse got loose from its bridle and backed up into the truck. No charges were laid and no injuries were reported. The

truck sustained minor damage.

>>12:30 PM | Police received a

call about an industrial accident at a feed mill on Listowel Road.

A male employee slipped and fell off a scale, hurting his leg.

The man was taken to hospital as a precaution.

August 10 >>12:00 AM | Police found a

large amount of marijuana while performing a routine traffic stop along Arthur Street South. Twelve grams of the drug was found in a vehicle and seized for destruction. No charges were laid.

> Woolwich lifts burn ban The return of rainy weather was not only a relief for farmers and owners of lawns, it marks the end of Woolwich’s open burn ban.

Residents are still required, however, to follow safety procedures, which include obtaining

a burn permit, available from township fire department.

Deputy fire chief Dale Martin urges those conducting an outdoor burn not to leave it unattended and to have the necessary equipment on hand to extinguish the fire.

ith only a few weeks to go before the start of school, there is mounting concern about the future of Ontario’s private bus companies.

For the past three years the government of Ontario has been running pilot projects to judge the effectiveness of making bidding for bus routes a competitive tendering process with five-year contracts instead of the annual non-tendered process that has occurred for

decades.

Private bus operators throughout the province cried foul as they feared they would lose routes, and business, to larger, multinational bus companies.

On June 23, Education Minister Leona Dombrowsky announced a moratorium on the ministry’s support of a competitive route procurement policy for bus operators in the province, saying she would assemble a taskforce to study the affects of this new policy and present a report in December.

Yet small operators across the province remain nervous, as Dombrowsky has yet to make any new announcements on the taskforce or the direction the report is taking.

“The frustrating thing right now is the announcement was made in late June and there has been no mention of it since, so operators are quite anxious to get that underway so that we can have that process reviewed,” said Sean Payne, president of the Independent School Bus Operators Association.

The new policy would require all bus companies to engage in a competitive bidding process for bus routes. Payne is worried this process will see bigger businesses undercutting

“The process itself is not conducive to our market. School bussing is a lot more distinct than buying photocopiers or paperclips – our operators are very specific to certain geographic areas.”

He said that small, family-owned operations know their regions better than other companies do, making

for safer drivers and safer routes for buses and the students riding them. But under this new competitive policy, jobs will be lost: 18 companies in the province have already been forced out of business after losing their routes, he said.

Here in Waterloo Region, bus contracts have been competitively tendered for the past year-and-a-half and the school board has al-

ready signed a five-year contract with a consortium of bus operators.

The general manager of student transportation services at the region’s public and Catholic school boards sees the process of more costeffective for taxpayers, and a better way of doing business.

“It is obviously difficult for a small operator with one, two or even 10 buses to operate competitively in this market today,” said Benoit Bourgault. “But at the end of the day I don’t think the taxpayers of Ontario are willing to pay more because it’s a small operator. They need to find ways to remain competitive and provide a safe and reliable service.”

O

ne is a large project with plenty of public opposition. The other a fairly small expansion to an existing operation with some measure of public support. Yet both gravel pit applications may end up in provincial hearings, despite Woolwich council taking opposite stances on each of them.

Having rejected an application for a gravel pit in Conestogo at Tuesday night’s meeting, councillors shortly thereafter supported the bid by D&J Lockhart Excavators to expand their aggregate operations at 6225 Middlebrook Rd. In doing so, they rejected a planning staff recommendation the site plan include a sunset clause limiting the operation to a 20-year timeframe.

While the applicant reluctantly agreed to the clause, councillors opted against it because of the possibility a third party – the Ontario Stone,

Sand and Gravel Association or even the Ministry of Natural Resources – would take the issue to the Ontario Municipal Board.

A second contentious provision controlling depth of extraction – so-called vertical zoning – remains in place, however, increasing the likelihood of an OMB appeal. Such zoning is already the subject of an OMB hearing, as the province has challenged the Region of Waterloo’s proposal to include vertical zoning in its new Official Plan. Woolwich has backed the region in that fight, supporting controls that safeguard the water table from problems related to aggregate extraction.

Director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley argued in favour of retaining the sunset clause, noting the township would like to see time limits as part of aggregate policies.

Acknowledging the likelihood of legal issues, he

said the clause is defensible.

“I don’t think there’s any question as to the legality of it. This is what we’re prepared to defend at the OMB,” he told councillors, hoping to see the provision remain as part of the agreement.

“I feel it’s necessary to have the sunset clause as a part of approval.”

Councillors, however, feared further delays for the company, which is running out of gravel and can no longer bid on larger jobs. They also seemed eager to avoid the expense of an OMB hearing.

“Somebody once told me you have to choose the hill you want to die on. I don’t want to die on this hill,” said Coun. Allan Poffenroth, suggesting this was not the place for the township to dig in its heels.

Coun. Mark Bauman, noting the applicant had cooperated with the township throughout the process, said he was satisfied with a gentle-

men’s agreement the company would abide by limitations, adding the situation would be much clearer after the both the sunset clause and vertical zoning issues make their way through the various legal challenges.

The two parties had previously agreed on issues such as hours of operation, fencing and berming – outstanding items from provisional approval awarded by council in the spring.

The D&J Lockhart plan calls for a 24-acre expansion of an existing 12-acre operation.

Annual extraction is not to exceed 150,000 tonnes, and the area contains and estimated one million tonnes of aggregate.

The company expects about eight truck trips per hour (four trucks in and out) during a regular operating day.

The status of the project will be clearer following the 20-day appeal period once notice of council’s decision is circulated.

In Waterloo Region, 30,000 students are bussed daily at an annual cost of about $18 million.

Bourgault also said that through the competitive tendering process in Waterloo, many small operators actually retained old routes or even gained new routes, while larger operators lost routes – and thus money.

“It has nothing to do with the operator,” he said. “It has all to do with providing a safe, reliable, efficient and cost-effective service.

“At the end of the day we need to think of the cargo that they’re transporting, it’s extremely

precious.”

The ISBOA, however, believes that when it comes to transporting children to school every day, it should come down to more than whoever is just the lowest bidder. Simply put, the drivers and the companies who know the region and the roads the best should be the ones behind the wheel, and for Payne, that often means more local companies.

“Essentially what makes the system safe is the stability of it; the

same drivers, same operators, and they have those years of experience and that’s what brings stability and safety to the industry,” he said.

When asked what would happen to the long-term future of small bus operators in the province if the project is allowed to go forward, he said that “It will create a monopoly over time within the industry, and once that happens, [school boards] will lose control of their prices.”

The store will close at 5 p.m. on Aug. 16 as the staff prepares to fill the store with all the clothes and set up the three additional change rooms for customers. The store will then reopen from 6 until 10 p.m.

Biogas: Council submits list of issues to Ministry of the Enviroment > CONTINUED FROM COVER because of its proximity to residential areas.

The township also wants an assessment of the impact of truck traffic, as well as a peer review of the studies submitted by the applicant, Woolwich Bio-En Inc. If the project is approved, council wants to see the establishment of maximum noise, air and odour standards for the operation, along with detailed procedures for dealing with non-compliance issues should problems arise.

A community opposition group called for additions to the township’s comments, looking for council to take a harder stance against the project.

Sebastian SiebelAchenbach, representing the Elmira Bio Fuel Citizens Committee (BFCC), suggested some additions to the township’s concerns, including provisions for assessing the quality-of-life impacts.

Addressing council Aug. 9, he challenged the assumption the project was green simply because it will

use waste material to generate electricity.

Trucking in material from long distances, he said, will decrease the “energetics” of the facility. Coupled with “a constant stream of garbage trucks,” increased truck traffic and the risk of worsening Elmira’s “smelly reputation,” the negatives could outweigh the positives.

In a later discussion, BFCC member Michael Purves-Smith, who attended the council meeting, said the green aspects of the generating station would be lost on the traffic and odour problems caused people to get into their cars and drive out of town rather than visiting the core.

Already home to a higher than average amount of truck traffic for a community of its size, he said, Elmira would be worse off for an estimated 60 or 70 additional truck passes each day. Those numbers could increase if other businesses are encouraged to set up shop on the adjacent industrial land to take advantage of the heat energy that will be cre-

ated by the biodigester providing the gas to fuel the generators.

He, too, called for the safeguards against the potential negative impacts of the facility.

“We’re behind green, but we don’t want to have to correct it after the fact,” said PurvesSmith. “There still is considerable resistance to this idea.”

Acknowledging the opposition in a presentation to councillors Tuesday night, Woolwich Bio-En president Chuck Martin said there’s also a substantial amount of support in the community.

While not vocal, those people are in favour of alternative energy options.

Likewise, the township’s comments to the province covered only negatives rather than noting the positive aspects, he added, pointing to other communities such as Grimsby that have embraced the technology, even putting forth their own projects.

“I’m disappointed that’s not evident in this community,” said Martin of the township report.

Although not addressed at the council meeting, efforts to find another location for the project remain ongoing, but appear to have stalled. Thus far the company has received no assurances its place in the queue of Ontario Power Authority’s alternative energy Feed-in Tariff (FiT) projects. The company is open to the idea of moving the site, but not if that means losing its current agreement and having to start a new application process behind 32,000 others now in line, said Martin.

Bio-En has a sitespecific contract to connect to the grid from its current proposed location. There’s been no indication that can be transferred, which could render moot any negotiations about MOE approval elsewhere and what to do about costs the company has incurred to date.

“If we can’t move the contract, there’s no point talking about all the other stuff.”

The plan by Woolwich Bio-En Inc. would see a $12-million facility built at 40 Martin’s

Hunsberger: Fate of pit to be decided at OMB > CONTINUED FROM COVER already the subject of an open file at the OMB. Hunder Development took the issue to the provincial board because of the delays in the application process that had gone on for more than two years.

Owner Bob Hunsberger said he expects the issue will end up decided at the OMB, but he’s prepared to meet with township staff to sort out what he sees as minor differences between the two sides.

To date, however, his requests for meetings have gone unheeded.

“It seems the township wants it to go to the OMB. We’re prepared to do that because we believe we’ve got a strong position … and the work we’ve done is defensible,” he said in a later interview, noting he would prefer to avoid the OMB route, which could cost hundreds of

thousands of dollars.

“A hearing is an expensive process for all sides.”

But that route seems likely in the face of the township’s position and a well-organized public effort to halt the pit.

Keri Martin Vrbanac, president of the Conestogo-Winterbour ne Residents Association (CWRA), argued in favour of the staff position as councillors prepared to vote, noting the pit would be bordered by four residential neighbourhoods, including Golf Course Road in Conestogo and Sunset Drive and Meadowbrook Place in Winterbourne. From noise and dust to traffic and property devaluation, the negative impacts would affect hundreds of residents.

“This would have a negative impact on the residents of Woolwich Township,” she said, adding there’s no need

or justification for the pit under either the township or Waterloo Region policies.

Her arguments were bolstered by Warren Sorenson, a planning consultant retained by CWRA to review all of the documents related to the Hunder application. He highlighted a range of compatibility issues, many identified in Kennaley’s report, and the potential for adverse impacts on surrounding communities.

“It’s akin to the establishment of a heavy industrial use in a residential neighbourhood,” said Sorenson, calling the proposal “contrary to good planning.”

Those negatives ultimately swayed councillors, who voted 3-1 in favour of denial, with only Coun. Allan Poffenroth opposed to the motion.

outstanding issues prompted a vote against the pit, though he suggested the two sides meet to see if the developer could satisfy staff ’s concern, perhaps prompting the township to change its position. To goal would be to avoid an expensive OMB hearing.

Hunsberger, who had request council defer a decision until his team had time to review Kennaley’s report, said later he still hopes for a meeting once his consultants have a response to the concerns raised Tuesday night.

The current plan calls for a gravel operation on some 150 acres of land on two farm properties located at 128 Katherine St. S. and 1081 Hunsberger Rd. Hunder Developments hopes to remove 4.3 million metric tonnes of aggregate, proposing to extract up to 500,000 tonnes per year.

bic digester to convert organic material into biogas and fertilizer.

It will be fed by waste material, including livestock manure, food waste, used cooking oils and other fats and the like. A diesel generator converted to work with methane will generate electricity.

Woolwich in balancing act over gravel pits

C

all it a tale of two gravel pits, one rejected, the other endorsed. A microcosm of a debate over aggregate extraction.

Woolwich council this week denied zone change and Official Plan changes for a large pit near Conestogo while making accommodations for a much smaller operation near West Montrose. The decisions weren’t surprising to those following the gravel issue in the township.

Bob Hunsberger of Hunder Developments wasn’t surprised the vote went against him. There’s been strong opposition to his proposal for a pit on a site between Conestogo and Winterbourne. Residents there are well-organized and have engaged experts to refute studies submitted by his company, challenging the process at every stage.

Township planning staff, weighing the quality-of-life impacts

– noise, dust, truck traffic, groundwater contamination, and the like – found the project incompatible with the nearby residential neighbourhoods.

It was a different story with the D&J Lockhart application, which is essentially a relatively small expansion of an existing pit. There was no public outcry, as there have been no issues with the current operation.

The impact has been deemed to be minimal.

In supporting the bid, councillors crafted an agreement designed to minimize delays – the company is running short of gravel – and to make the process as painless as possible. That’s in keeping with the township’s stand it’s not opposed to gravel pits, only those that have a negative impact. Residents have expressed their concerns early and often in regard to those proposals,

The Capital Paving bid for an operation in West Montrose raises the hackles of those concerned about the covered bridge and its surrounding environment, above and beyond the noise, dust and safety concerns that naturally come along with such operations. In the Conestogo case, the gravel pit threatens to send soaring the number of trucks rumbling through the village, as well as negatively impacting the quality of life of nearby residents.

In the normal course of affairs, the cost-benefit analysis would provide councillors with an easy answer for the larger pits: deny the applications. Municipal share of aggregate profits are miniscule, not enough to cover the direct costs associated with road repairs and

safety measures, let alone the health and well-being of residents.

But with gravel, the issue is never as simple as that. As the council discussions showed, there’s always the prospect of an appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board to consider. Such legal wranglings are costly and time-consuming, and the democratically-challenged agency has a track record of ignoring local decisions in favour of developers.

The poor provincial record of respecting local wishes is magnified in the case of gravel pits, where the Aggregate Resources Act is practically a cudgel, and the Ministry of Natural Resources seen as a defender of operators, not Ontarians.

Councillors have to weigh the public interest, the likelihood of a legal battle and our need for aggregates.

Not a easy task, but the goal is find the choice that does the least harm.

Treatment of the under-class at the root

“I

don’t call it rioting, I call it an insurrection of the masses of the people. It is happening in Syria, it is happening in Clapham, it’s happening in Liverpool, it’s happening in Port-ofSpain, Trinidad, and that is the nature of the historical moment,” said Darcus Howe, a black British journalist, in an interview with BBC television on Tuesday. The revolution has finally arrived: after the “Arab Spring,” here comes the “English Spring.”

And the revolution is going to spread. There’s apparently a “Trinidadian Spring” too (although it’s also possible that Howe only mentioned Port-of-Spain because he grew up in Trinidad). Whatever. In any case, the English Spring is certainly an earthshaking event.

With London in flames, thousands dead, and the British government trembling before a full-scale insurrection of the masses, the collapse of the entire capitalist order is only moments away. As the Tunisian revolution led to the overthrow of Mubarak in Egypt and then to a non-violent revolutionary movement in Syria, so the overthrow of the British government will quickly lead to the destruction of the U.S. government and the Chinese Communist regime.

Wait a moment! This just in! London isn’t in flames after all. Some dozens of buildings have been burned in various residential parts of London, but none in the centre. Apart from the original demonstration outside a police station in the London suburb of Tottenham by relatives of a suspected drug dealer who was shot by police on Sunday, it’s opportunistic looters who have been out on the streets, not political protesters.

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER Camden Town, for example, the social media on Monday night were full with rumours of local landmarks in flames.

However, Tuesday morning revealed that a few phone shops in the high street had been looted overnight, and an iconic (but rather grubby) rock venue called the Electric Ballroom had been vandalized. Nothing else to report.

We in the media love stories of death and destruction, but it turns out that there aren’t thousands of dead either.

As of Wednesday, there had been only five deaths that might be linked to the turmoil: three people killed in Birmingham by a speeding car probably driven by looters, one man found shot dead in a car in London for unexplained reasons, and the drug dealer, Mark Duggan, whose death at the hands of the police unleashed these events.

There are certainly questions to be answered about Duggan’s killing (it appears that the gun he was carrying was never fired), and further questions to be asked about the way that the police dealt with his family afterwards.

The demonstration outside Tottenham police station was genuinely political, and there are plausible claims that the police response was excessive.

But after that, everything changed.

On the second night, there was no rioting, in the sense of demonstrations with a political motive or goal. There was just looting, as disaffected youths

from the under-class seized the opportunity to acquire a little property from the rest of the population and damage a lot more. They feel that they have been abandoned by the society, and they are right.

Every post-industrial society has a large and growing minority of permanently unemployed or under-employed people who would once have grown up into the good working-class jobs that no longer exist. They are present in significant numbers in Britain and in France, in the United States and in Russia, even in Japan. It’s those bored and angry youths who are looting in England now.

Some people want to impose an ethnic explanation on this phenomenon.

They try to define the looting and violence as a response by underprivileged black youths in Britain (or by underprivileged Muslim youth in the 2005 and 2007 riots in France). But the truth is that rioting and looting have always been equal-opportunity activities in both countries.

In the past 30 years of sporadic rioting and looting in England, every outbreak has included a large, probably majority participation by young whites from the under-class. The same was true of France in 2005 and 2007, where the young “Muslim” rioters were quite happy to be accompanied by their white and Asian friends from the same tower blocks.

For complex cultural reasons, the looters in England are disproportionately Afro-Caribbean youths, but it is not a particularly racist society. AfroCaribbeans come last in school performance in England, but the children of

Project aims to discover how much GHG we emit

C

ut your electricity consumption because of rate hikes due to time-of-use billing? Reduced water consumption because of July’s drought and the ongoing series of huge price increases? Congratulations, you’ve helped reduce your carbon footprint. When the region’s total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are tallied up, they’ll be that much lower.

Taking stock of just how much we contribute to the GHG problem is the first step in the newly-launched Climate Collaborative, a partnership of Sustainable Waterloo, REEP Green Solutions and the Regional Municipality of Waterloo.

The goal to develop a communityscale GHG inventory, reduction target and action plan for the region was advanced last week courtesy of funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation ($150,000 over two years) and the Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation ($30,000). The region has committed a further $25,000 to the project.

With that money in place, The Climate Collaborative will begin an inventory of the region’s GHG emissions, setting up partnerships with municipalities, non-profit groups and forward-thinking companies, says Sarah Brown, the group’s project manager.

“We’ll be getting a baseline reading and determining where our greenhouse gases are coming from,” she explains, adding the information will not drill down to individual emitters, but will separate them into sectors such as transportation, industrial, residential and the like.

With a “hard number” in place, the group’s efforts will turn to public education and reduction strategies. Across the country, total emissions have fallen in recent years – in part due to the recession –

Whatever the figure, we’ve got a long way to go. Canadians are among the world’s largest per-capita emitters of greenhouse gases. According to Canada’s 2011 national inventory submission to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions were estimated to be 690 megatonnes (Mt) of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2009, a decrease of approximately six per cent (42 Mt) from 2008’s level of 732 Mt. This was the second year in a row that emissions decreased, caused in part by the global recession and reduced use of coal for electricity generation.

Since 2005, Canadian GHG emissions have decreased by 41 Mt. This drop is primarily the result of declines in electricity and heat generation (due to decreasing use of fossil fuel) and manufacturing (due to declining output).

The region, which has shed a significant amount of manufacturing jobs – part of the economic decline connected to shipping jobs overseas – has likely been part of that GHG trend. That would qualify as a reduction – albeit not the ideal kind – in direct emissions. The Climate Collaborative will also be measuring indirect emissions as well. When you use electricity, for instance, you’re not creating GHG directly, but contributing to the problem depending on where that electricity was generated, whether

by hydro, nuclear, gas- or coal-fired station.

In the early stages of its inventory, the organization will compile information from utilities to get a picture of our energy usage. Other indicators will include measuring car ownership/usage, transit and factors such as the length of the road network that will provide data based on the average emissions per kilometre.

“All that information will give us an explicit carbon footprint in Waterloo Region,” says Brown. Armed with those numbers, the group will develop “realistic yet ambitious targets for reduction of greenhouse gases.”

The project is modelled on similar initiatives in Niagara and Durham regions, themselves motivated by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Partners for Climate Protection program, a network of Canadian municipal governments that have committed to reducing greenhouse gases and acting on climate change.

Combating climate change is very much a local matter. The FCM estimates about half of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions are under the direct or indirect control or influence of municipal governments, noting that by 2012, communities

could cut GHG emissions by 20 to 50 Mt from municipal operations and community-wide initiatives with investments in environmental infrastructure and sustainable transportation infrastructure.

Operators of a variety of facilities and a fleet of vehicles, municipalities are in a position to reduce energy consumption, the cause of most greenhouse gases. Environment Canada’s greenhouse gas inventory shows about 80 per cent of emissions were generated from energy sources, includes all energy production and consumption. The remaining 19 percent was largely generated by agricultural sources and industrial processes, with smaller contributions from waste and solvent and other product uses.

Municipalities in the region are likely to play a key role in the information gathering stage, says Brown.

And, later, in the formation of an action plan, expected in the spring of 2012. Those who join in the initiative to reduce GHG emissions will have targets in place for 2013.

“It’s important to approach this project in a collaborative manner,” she notes. “Sharing resources and knowledge will benefit not only the organizations involved but also the greater community – now and for generations to come.”

The real issue here is class – or to be more precise, the despair of the under-class. Less brutal and insulting behaviour towards the underclass by the police in normal times would reduce the level of resentment and the frequency of rioting and looting, but it wouldn’t stop it.

So there will probably be at least a few days’ more looting in England, until the under-class youths in every city and neighbourhood have had a chance to vent their anger and fill their pockets. And then it will stop. For a while.

Housing market stable despite financial turmoil D

espite uncertainty in the European and U.S. economies, the local housing market exhibited some minor gains in the month of July compared to 2010.

In the K-W area there were a total of 512 home sales through the Multiple Listing System of the Kitchener-Waterloo Association of Realtors, a 1.6 per cent increase over the 504 homes sold in the region last July.

The sales included 350 detached homes, 93 condominium units, 35 semis and 30 townhouses, and it was the third straight month of growth compared to last year’s numbers.

The president of the KWAR says that those increases, though small, could indicate big things in the overall market for the rest of the year.

“I think we’re looking at a very stable market here,” said George Patton. “I think we’re looking at consumers in this area who have good confidence in the economy and are prepared to make the major commitment to get into the housing market.”

Patton said that there were a number of factors leading to the increased confidence in the housing market and the economy compared to

2010. In June of last year the government implemented the HST and while it does not specifically apply to re-sale homes, he said that many potential homebuyers got into the market earlier in the year than usual to try and avoid the extra tax.

He also said that last year at this time the Bank of Canada was debating whether or not to raise interest rates, and while they did only rise one quarter of a percentage instead of the two or three points that many feared, it was another factor for the increased purchases.

In the first six months of 2010, the number of residential properties sold through MLS increased 16 per cent over 2009 and for the first time the value of those sales broke the one billion dollar mark at the end of June.

The 3,633 homes sold were also only 96 units short of the overall record set in 2007.

“This year, we’re not seeing that skewing because there hasn’t been anything in the market to drive that and so it’s evening out much better.”

Nevertheless, despite the small gains made in the markets this year over last, the numbers are still far off from the success earlier in the decade. Between 2007 and 2009, the region sold on average about 650 homes in

“Certainly it would be lovely to get back there, but will we get there? I really don’t know,” said Patton, adding that the increased sales in the spring have evened out the marketplace. There were a total of 667 residential properties sold in May, a 4.5 percent increase compared to May of last year and the third-highest on record.

He also said that there continues to be an active market place in the townships surrounding the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo, including Woolwich, Wellesley, Baden and Wilmot. That interest has been sparked by slightly cheaper housing given lower

land prices in the townships compared to Kitchener and Waterloo, as well as larger lots. Plus the commute is not a major problem, he adds, saying that the “romance of the small community” is also a pull for some.

Patton did, however, note that the continuing economic problems south of the border that have carried over to European and Asian markets will likely have some impact on the housing market here in Canada.

“Any influences are always of concern,” he said of the current economic climate, but he is confident that the region has the economic diversity to withstand almost anything thrown at it. The diverse range of insurance companies, manufacturing,

high-tech industries and even agriculture has made Waterloo Region a prime area for investment in the long-term.

“Yes, if I’m a buyer out there and I’m looking at the stock market, am I going to be concerned? Absolutely.

Am I going to think twice about it? Absolutely. But is my job secure and does it look like things are going to go well for me? Then I might buy, and it seems people are doing that.”

Farmers out of gate early with election priorities A

mandated election such as the one Ontario will experience this fall takes the spontaneity out of campaigning. But does it ever help with planning. Case in point: the way farmers have prepared for the Oct. 6 political face-off, with a succinct election kit and overarching key messages.

The nine-page kit, assembled by the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, is making its way into farmers’ hands now. It gives them ample time to prepare local strategies that will ensure agriculture and food is a priority in their riding.

Indeed, the federation says it’s in farmers’ best interest to “engage and equip” candidates with sound, factual information about agricultural issues in Ontario. “The politicians we help elect will be making decisions and creating policy that can impact the future of Ontario’s agri-food industry,” it says. “Let’s do everything we can to help them understand the importance of our industry.”

To that end, the federation has a few statistics for farmers to keep in their back pockets. It points out that in Ontario, agriculture supports 164,000 jobs, pays $7 billion in wages and salaries, generates $3.4 billion in taxes and contributes 13 per cent of the province’s gross domestic product. These are all important figures in a recovering economy, as is

Food For Thought Owen Roberts the fact that every $1 of farm product generated in Ontario produces $6 in final sales. In other words, a lot of people depend on farmers for a living – and depend of farmers’ ability to make a living.

That’s where issues come in.

Farmers need decision makers to clear and maintain a path that’s free of impediments that make it tough to farm.

Farmers’ main beef is with regulations and red tape created in urban boardrooms that are far removed from rural Ontario. Farmers are Ontario’s biggest landowning business segment, and need to be at the table either personally or through elected representatives when decisions are made about the way they farm (sometimes called the right to farm). Farmers suffered through a long period of change and disengagement as agriculture fell off the agenda. Now that it’s back on, they have some catching up to do. That underscores the importance of effective lobbying and communicating, explaining their role in environmental protection for

example, but also being clear that they need the same kind of access to roads and highways as the public, to move their crops and livestock to the next level of processing.

In fact, some organizations, such as the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, say regulatory reform is the number-one issue for agriculture. The province knows farmers are serious about this, and asked the federation of agriculture to stickhandle Ontario’s Open For Business information gathering and census-building exercise over the past year or so. The idea was to find ways to make Ontario a more attractive and productive place to do business. Federation president Bette Jean Crews says it was groundbreaking that the farm community was called on to lead

the charge. One of the recurring themes through this consultative process was regulatory reform.

Other issues on farmers’ plates this election are energy, ecological goods and services, rural infrastructure and business risk management. Broken down, these include the food versus fuel debate for crops, support for farmers’ efforts to preserve land and water used by the public, healthy rural communities that serve farmers and foster tourism, and shared support for insurance programs that protect farmers when prices are low but people still have to eat.

Prospective politicians who see a farmer coming with campaign kit in hand should be prepared. Farmers mean business, in more ways than one.

to the circumstances of their individual life and the type of home that they can afford.

“You have to do the proper work.

Get that in order, talk to a realtor, then go from there.

“If you’re comfortable with a number and it’s not going to keep you awake because you’re worried, than that’s the number you should live with regardless of where the interest rates are.”

T

yler Robinson has been training for hours in the home made gym in his parent’s garage. As he finishes his last set of bicep curls he is exhausted and lets the dumbbells drop to the floor with a loud thud.

He takes a moment to rest and regain his composure before tackling the weights again. It’s a never-ending battle for the Moorefield resident. His goal is to be bigger and stronger.

Robinson has overcome countless obstacles over the years; the 21-year-old was born with cerebral palsy.

Doctors were unable to diagnose his condition when

he was born and eventually told Robinson’s parents, Les and Deborah, that he would never be able to walk and would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

“The doctors were not sure how far he would get in life and never thought he would get as far as he has,” said Deborah.

Cerebral palsy is a condition that involves the brain and nervous system functions such as movement, learning, seeing, hearing and thinking, often causing physical disabilities.

Just last month, however, Robinson was named the 2011 Ontario Armwrestling Association (OAA) Rookie of the Year.

Robinson has had a passion for the sport since he was in school and his attraction to arm wrestling began after he first watched “Over the Top,” the 1987 film starring Sylvester Stallone. He has watched the film countless times.

“He has always enjoyed doing it and when he was in senior school in Drayton he worked with an educational assistant who was very supportive of him and they would just always arm wrestle,” said Les. It wasn’t until two years ago Robinson met Jay and Janet Reihle and Jeff Oosterveld of the OAA who started to visit him at home and eventually take him to

practices that he began to take the sport seriously.

“He always had an interest in it, but we never knew that the (OAA) existed,” said Deborah.

Until then Robinson was consumed with repairing small engines, another feat doctors said he would never be able to handle as his fine motor skills were compromised by the condition.

“With small engines there are a lot of small parts and his skills were not well developed, but he would spend hours in the shop working on an engine, to the point where it would have driven anyone else nuts, but he never gave up.

He just takes his time and

works away at it,” said Les. “He has always been a fighter, if he wanted to accomplish something he would.”

Under the guidance of his friends at the OAA, Robinson began to enter local tournaments and eventually joined the Harriston Havoc arm wrestling team in October 2010.

Robinson has always had incredible upper strength, said Deborah; it wasn’t until he began to seriously train that his family began to see some unbelievable changes occur.

“All the workouts have increased the muscles and strength throughout his entire body and he no longer needs to use any kind of aid to walk or

Determination: Clear goals and dedication have led to success over the last couple of years has not gone to his head. He trains endlessly for hours in his gym as his ultimate goal is to become a world champion.

“I think eventually you will see him become a provincial and then national champion and if he keeps working

on it he will be a world champion, that is what he wants, he has a lot of support and his teammates tell him he can do it,” said Les. Determined as always Robinson says he will never give up on the sport he loves.

“The sport has changed his life, it’s done a world of good for him as he has met some great friends and great people from the OAA, they are all one big family,” said Les. Les said his son was a shy child and arm wrestling has brought him out of his shell. As he meets more people and wins more events his confidence has grown.

“He was never able to do sports when he was younger that is why we are so happy to support him in this because it is finally his time to shine,” said Deborah.

Robinson admits the appeal of the sport is the training he must endure to increase his already astonishing 16-½ inch biceps.

“I like lifting the weights and going to the tournaments and at the same time meeting all the new people,” said Robinson. ”I want to win; arm wrestling is just such a big rush for

me.”

All the hard work has paid off for Robinson as he is the southern Ontario champion in his left arm and he won third for his right arm in the 177- to 198-pound category as well as the western Ontario champion for his left arm and second for his right.

Always a crowd favorite at tournaments and extremely popular with his wrestling peers, it was no surprise that Robinson walked away with the 2011 Ontario Rookie of the Year award on July 16.

Chris Gobby, a distinguished arm wrestling champion from Quebec, recently contributed a post on the OAA website about Robinson saying, “That kid is all heart and courage.

The intangible that he has inside him is the exact thing that most athletes that never achieve greatness lack.”

“It was shocking when they called out his name to receive rookie of the year,” said Les. “We were so proud and amazed when he won it.”

F

red Rooymans recently joined a very tight knit brotherhood as a volunteer firefighter at the newly-operational Breslau fire station.

Working in sales for years he was unsatisfied and unfulfilled with his day-to-day tasks, turning to his friends at the Brampton fire department for motivation.

“I grew up with my whole core group of friends being firefighters. Every time I would meet up with these guys they had these great stories and experiences,”

said Rooymans. “They got to help people everyday and it was inspirational to be around them and last year I found myself at a crossroads and my friend encouraged me to take the leap, telling me now is the time to do it.”

At the age of 32, Rooymans was accepted to the Ontario Fire Academy and had a placement at the Texas A&M south campus where he graduated as an American professional firefighter.

Shortly after graduation Rooymans was offered a position at the Breslau station and started work as a sales representative for Di-

val Canada, where he sells fire equipment to all the departments in Ontario, with Woolwich Township being one of his biggest clients.

Near the end of August, Rooymans will be travelling to New York with the Brampton Firefighter Lacrosse Club representing Woolwich at the World Police and Fire Games. The lacrosse team is made up of professional firefighters from all over Ontario.

The World Police & Fire Games is currently the second largest multi-sport event in the world, surpassed only by the Summer

Olympics. This year the games coincide with the 10year memorial of September 11, 2001.

Two overall themes will be a part of the games this year, including remembering those who lost their lives on 9-11, and gratitude as New Yorkers thank the world for the support that flooded into their city after the terrorist attacks.

“It will definitely be an emotional time for some,” said Rooymans. “I believe that we will have a few vigils throughout the two weeks and I know they are having a presentation on the last

Oaring around on the other side of the lake A

bout a week ago, I decided to embark on a fishing expedition to the very far end of the lake. This meant two things.

One, I was about to confirm that the fishing there was just as bad as at my end of the lake. And, two, my outboard motor was about to run out of gas.

As any seasoned angler knows, these are the two things you can count on when setting out on this sort of adventure. This is not open for debate.

And while running out of gas in a deserted back bay with the wind working against you isn’t exactly fun, there is an upside to the experience. You see, in a situation like this, you learn a lot about yourself.

For example, one of the things I can now say with absolute certainty is that I would have not been a good Viking. Believe me, I’m just as surprised as you are.

Sure, I look fantastic in a horned

Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve Galea helmet and furs. And, yes, if past experience at an all-you-can-eat buffet is any indication, I have a God-given talent for pillaging too.

But, as I was reminded as I looked towards home and my fridge, there’s more to being a successful barbarian raider than that. For one thing, you had to actually get to the place you were about to plunder.

And, more often than not, this meant rowing – which I am horrible at.

OK, maybe I don’t suck at it. But I can certainly say that it’s not something I would want any part of – especially if it entailed crossing the North Sea.

And that is the main reason that I would have been a lousy Viking.

I can just picture myself on one of those massive long boats back in the old days. We’d be sitting at our benches with these massive oars in front of us. And just as I was about to plead for some sort of lumbar support, Lars the Lousy, our fearless leader would step onto the main deck.

“Men, today we are about to embark on an epic quest. We will leave this fjord and cross the great waters to raid the foreign coastline.”

“Uh, Lars,” I’d interrupt politely.

“There’s no wind. How the heck are we going to get there?”

“We’ll row for three days for 16 hours a day. It will be glorious!” he’d announce, while raising his battle axe to the heavens.

That’s probably the moment I’d choose to dive overboard. But, in keeping with my luck, the ship

would likely be beached until high tide rolled in. So when they picked me up and removed the sand and gravel from my teeth, I’d probably have a bit of explaining to do.

“Look Lars,” I’d begin, “if you had bothered to read page four of my résumé, you would know that I’m more of a drifting aimlessly kind of raider.”

“By the long beard of Odin, what do you mean?” he’d respond.

“Rowing is hard on my back,” I’d reply. “Can’t we just drift out there and catch a ride with a passing Roman galley?”

“Have you got into our supply of mead?” he’d respond.

To which I would nod negatively and burp.

And so my days as a Viking raider would probably be numbered.

Which is good, because I bet, even back then, the fishing at the far end of the water probably wasn’t any better.

In addition to the standard safety equipment, Rob Waters and the rest of the WMHA have a new weapon in the fight against concussions this upcoming season as the association rolls out a cognitive skills assessment pilot project for all rep-level players called ImPACT. and parents alike that will start in September to help increase awareness of concussions and the danger they present.

There is also a mandatory body checking clinic in early September, and Waters said the association is planning an optional four-day hitting and checking camp as well.

He said that proper contact skills at the minor level are paramount to player safety, because at a younger age when player’s neck muscles haven’t fully developed, whiplash is often just as responsible for concussions as blows to the head.

If the trial run of the program shows signs of success, it will be rolled out to all levels of hockey in the association next season. The Sugar Kings and girls' minor hockey are also considering the program, Waters added.

“Concussions and head shots are one of the biggest epidemics in hockey, if not sports, and I just feel that doing something like this is a huge benefit for the players and also for the parents.”

Concussions have become headline news in the past few years for all the wrong reasons. From the professional ranks of the NHL and NFL down through minor hockey in the USA and Canada, concerns about the long-term health of both bigleague and amateur athletes are growing.

According to the company’s website, “ImPACT is the most widely used computerbased testing program in the world and is implemented effectively across high school, collegiate, and professional levels of sport participation.”

Earlier this year the CFL announced that all eight teams in the league would be required to participate in the program.

n an effort to increase player safety by improving the diagnosis of potential concussions in its players, the Woolwich Minor Hockey Association will implement a pilot project this season in its rep-level leagues known as ImPACT, or Immediate PostConcussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing.

In conjunction with the Clinical Medical Research Group, ImPACT is a concussion management program developed in the early 1990s aimed at helping doctors, trainers, coaches and parents know the best time to let a player return to action following a concussion.

“I’m really excited about this program,” said Rob Waters, vice-president of the coaching committee for the WMHA. “The overlying reasoning why we’re doing this is just to create the safest environment for our players possible.”

Last season there were nine reported concussions in the association, but Waters admitted that many likely went undiagnosed and the number was probably closer to 15.

Any player over the age of nine that wants to play for a rep-level team during the 2011/2012 season must complete an online test to establish a baseline result of their cognitive skills, reaction time, memory and attention span.

The results of that test, which can be done online in about 20 minutes, are stored by the association in the event of a head injury to that player. If such an injury occurs, within 24 to 48 hours that player is taken to a specialized clinic where they will re-take the baseline test.

The two sets of results are then compared, and doctors can assess the extent of the damage and the severity of the injury.

“We’re putting that decision of when to return to play in the hands of a doctor,” said Waters, rather than leaving the decision up to parents, trainers and the players themselves, as was done in the past.

Rooymans lived in New York and played field lacrosse for two years. As such, these games are a little like a homecoming.

“I have some relatives that live on Long Island and I am hoping that they can come out and come see us play a few games,” said Rooymans.

“It will be great to be back in New York City again, I am

very excited to be a part of it all.”

Playing against clubs from all over the world, Rooymans, who also helps manage the team, says he expects the squad to perform very well.

“I think we are a contender. I want to be positive – the team we have assembled are a great group of athletes along with a few pro players as well. We have the captain of the Boston Blazers, a pro-

fessional lacrosse team, Dan Dawson on our team; we have some great players out of Toronto and have one import from Australia.”

This year boasts to be the biggest games to date, with more than 15,000 athletes competing in some 65 sporting events.

The games may be coming to Ontario soon as delegations from Toronto and Ottawa bid to host the games in 2017.

Not to be found on the pages of the dictionary, perhaps, but certainly in abundance on the stage of the Registry Theatre this weekend and next as JM Drama presents The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Set in a school gymnasium, the play is a heartwarming look at the pressures of growing up through the eyes of quirky yet lovable characters – misfits, nerds, neurotics –competing for the title of spelling bee champ.

It’s billed as a hip musical comedy which follows six young people in the throes of puberty, who are overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, as they learn

that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.

During the course of the competition, we get to know more about the six contestants, their lives, histories, problems and desires – all to great comic effect, says the production’s director.

“These six misfit children – played by adults – make for a lot of laughs,” said Allan Hoch. “This musical is very suitable for people who don’t call themselves musical theatre buffs. It’s very light and funny fare.”

A Tony Award winner, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is based on C-RE-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, an original play by The Farm Improv Group in New York City. It officially opened Off-Broadway in 2005, moving to Broadway later that year.

The musical’s improv roots are part and parcel of the production, as each performance involves some audience participation: there’s a point where some audience members are asked to come up and take part in the bee.

It’s an element that lends an element of uncertainty to all of Hoch’s preparations.

“You never know what’s going to happen. That will keep the actors on their toes every night,” he said. “The improve aspect is always going to be amusing.”

The 14 cast members certainly have their work cut out for them. Light and comedic though it is, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’s musical score is a challenging one, Hoch said, lauding the songs as well-written and catchy. Audience members will be humming them long

after the curtain falls.

For the performers, the music offers no place to coast – “they’ve got to hit the notes just right” – and the cast has been spot-on, he added.

“They’re all very good singers, good entertainers” As for the choreography, well, it involves adults dancing like kids. Very nerdy kids. Let’s just say the laughs come naturally.

In preparing for this week’s opening, Hoch has relied heavily on musical director Martin Lacoste, who performs with his four piece rock band, and choreographer Jennifer Wright.

It’s a combination that’s kept him laughing all through the rehearsal phase of the production. The lighthearted musical is a shift from the last three years of summer offering from JM

Drama, which featured Urinetown, Sweeney Todd and Cabaret.

Seeking a change of pace, Hoch suggested The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee for this year’s production.

“I chose this because we needed something light to do after three years of dark shows,” he explained.

Due to some of the themes touched on in the show, parental guidance of the PG-13 variety is advised.

For you Einsteins of the circus, what makes an aerialist’s quadruple somersault so difficult and a “quad and a half” virtually impossible?

A.

It was July 10, 1982, at the Ringling Brothers Circus when aerial acrobat Miguel Vazquez let go his grip on the bar of his swing, tucked, rotated a full four times, then stretched out his arms to be caught by his brother Juan on another swing, says Jearl Walker in The Flying Circus of Physics. It was the first time a “quad” had been achieved before a circus audience, despite attempts at it since 1897.

The two requirements for a successful quad are rapid enough rotation and exact timing to pull out or risk rotating too quickly to be caught. The tuck position pulls in the body’s center of mass, just as an ice skater pulls in arms and legs for a faster spin. But most aerialists cannot draw themselves in tightly enough to get the required rotation rate for a quadruple.

As for timing, the aerialist must be able to eye his surroundings well enough to know how many times he has rotated, so he can come out just in time to be caught.

How did dogs get to be “man’s best friend”?

Our relationship with wolves goes back to about 20,000 B.C., when herds of large prey roamed the last Ice Age landscape, hunted by both wolves and men, says Deidre Barrett in Supernormal Stimuli.

Wolf packs chased and trapped game faster than humans but had no chance against the largest mammoths, which is where humans came in with their spears and arrows.

“Evidence is that humans and wolf packs hunted together from 20,000 B.C. to 15,000 B.C., with humans who liked wolves being more likely to live to reproduce, just as were wolves who liked humans.”

By 10,000 B.C., humans were beginning to turn wolves into domestic dogs and to use them to control other animals rather than kill them. The assignment of different tasks led to breeds taking on different traits -- retrievers, shepherders, guards and personal pets.

Diverse dog breeds accented cuteness, with larger eyes, floppy ears and behaviors such as whining, barking and submissiveness -- neotonous characteristics that wolves generally show as pups but then outgrow. Dogs were given their own species designation of “canis familiarus,” though they can still interbreed easily with wolves.

But far from floating, a bullet fired out of the front of the plane would travel at twice the speed of the plane, with the two velocities simply added together.

Youth activities the focus of Luther Marsh event

he tenth annual Luther Marsh Outdoors Day will be held at the Luther Marsh Conservation Area on Sept. 10. The past decade has seen the program grow tremendously from its humble roots.

What started as a bi-annual hunter education day with about 50 kids has grown into an annual affair that seems some 250 children aged 9-16 and about 70 volunteers descend on the GRCA’s multi-use, 5,666-hectare park about an hour north of Elmira.

Since its inception, more than 2,000 students have experienced the outdoors in ways they might not experience otherwise, thanks to the program.

“The whole idea is to get them exposed to the outdoors and get them experienced to things they might not have the chance to try,” said youth day board member Sharon Grose.

“Especially kids from town, there are all these things we take for granted while living in the country, and it’s very hands-on.”

Activities include bird identification, banding and calling, birdhouse building, supervised target shooting, wetland habitat rehabilitation and fly fishing. There will also be a number of demonstrations such as the use of retriever and pointer hunting dogs, humane trapping techniques, bow hunting and a falconry demonstration.

“Our goal is simple; we want today’s youth to be exposed to outdoor adventures and activities, to learn what opportunities are out there so they can enjoy the great outdoors.

We plant a seed, and then hopefully the students will become interested and possibly become future environmental stewards.”

The day is made possible through the generous donations of many sponsors and volunteers. The camp received a $500 donation from the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival this year, and Martha’s Mixes in Elmira will be donating the bird seed used to fill the popular bird feeders built by the students every year.

Premier Farm Equipment also donates the use of a gator, Husky Farm Equipment and TD Canada Trust provided a financial donation, and Home Hardware in St. Jacobs donates lanyards to each student as well.

Overall, Grose estimates that the total amount of volunteer time and in-kind donations is equal to about $32,000, and that the total number of volunteer hours is close to 750 for the one-day program.

The day begins at 8 a.m. on Sept. 10 and runs until 5 p.m. The entire day is free for children and their parents to enjoy, and food will be provided.
