Those numbers are up virtually across the board compared to other years as near-perfect weather and the well-executed event went off without a hitch, said EMSF chairperson Cheryl Peterson. Traffic was still backed up along Highway 85 bumper-to-bumper from Elmira to St. Jacobs around 2 p.m., which is virtually unheard of in previous years, she said.

Conestogo PS looking for boys to R.I.S.E. Up James Jackson

W

hen it comes to topics such as positive body image and self-esteem, often the discussion shifts to young girls and women. However, many involved in that conversation believe that more emphasis should be placed on ensuring that boys and young men are included in that discussion as well.

Boys and young men also require access to the tools necessary to ensure that they too have a strong sense of self-worth and a positive view of their bodies, which is why Conestogo Public School has organized a workshop on Apr. 16 to tackle this very subject.

It’s called R.I.S.E. Up – Raising Individual Self Esteem – and it is set for next Saturday from 9 a.m. to about 2:30 p.m. at the school.

“I believe that strong selfesteem is the root of pretty much all success, academic or in life, so it’s something I believe in deeply,” said Barb Lustgarten-Evoy of Fergus Educational Services, who will be conducting the daylong seminar, which will also include arts and crafts, videos, music and games.

“We’re a very hands-on and interactive program,” she laughed.

The day will also include an appearance by George Kourounis, best know as “George the Storm Chaser,” the star of Angry Planet.

“He’s full of energy and enthusiasm, and he’s a gogetter. We love having him as a part of the day,” said Lustgarten-Evoy.

All children struggle with

self-esteem issues, she added, and to suggest that one gender requires more attention or more of the focus would be remiss. The truth is that we do often see society having a different expectation from boys and their feelings, she added, or of how to touch base with those feelings and how to investigate what’s really going on.

“The main issues of basic self-esteem that contributes

to academic success and social skills exist just as much in boys as it does girls,” she said.

The boys’ workshop comes almost a year after a very successful girls’ workshop at Conestogo last May, with nearly 50 girls and their parents attending. This year they hope to have 40 boys at the workshop.

“After having a successful girls day, we said ‘yes’ we definitely wanted to have one for boys,” noted Juli Chinnick, co-chair of the Conestogo Public School council.

“The boys will be broken into smaller groups and they will be directed in different areas and on different things to discuss, and to self-examine themselves in areas like personal strengths, responsibility, accountability, healthy body image, and a whole bunch more activities,” she added.

The day is free for boys and their parents to attend, with sponsorship coming from the school council and the Conestogo-Winterbourne Optimist Club. Anyone is welcome to attend, but must pre-register.

Trails plan would help ease debate in Wellesley Elizabeth Bate

ellesley should develop a trails master plan, boosting public awareness to avoid the kinds of problems that emerged recently over a trail proposed for a new subdivision in Wellesley Village, says a new study.

A group of University of Guelph planning students presented the ideas to township council Monday night, reporting the results of re-

search that included a public meeting last month.

Their work came out of an effort to calm Wellesley residents’ fears in the on-going debate about where public trails should be established in the township.

The project was being graded by professors who were in attendance to hear Shannon McIntyre, Cristal Heintzman, Jeff Mederios and Rob Sissions give their recommendations to council

about how to proceed with building the trails.

“The basic point of the project was to try to alleviate some of the contention that was going on within the community regarding the trail system that was being proposed back in December,” said Mederios.

The report found residents showed concern over two major issues, safety on the trails and the use of private land to create the trail space.

Although the Mar. 9 meeting was sparsely attended, attributed to snowy weather conditions, the students were able to form a recommendation of what was most agreeable to be done about the issue. The first step is to hold more public awareness meetings, they said.

> Lunor's motion to be heard by OMB Currently on hold, the Lunor Group subdivision planned for northwest Elmira will see some movement May 17, the date the Ontario Municipal Board will hear a motion of dismissal against an appeal launched by Hawk Ridge Homes.

Lunor has been pushing for a quick hearing to have the case dismissed, saying there are no grounds for appealing the decision made last November by council and subsequently upheld by Waterloo Region planners.

“It’s a frivolous appeal. There’s no planning merit to their arguments," said Lunor’s Shawn McGuire of the Hawk Ridge action.

While the legal process ties up the project, which will see up to 1,700 residential units built out over several years, the company is continuing with its engineering work.

The hearing will be held in Woolwich council chambers.

> Hawkesville eyes historic designation The possibility of designating Hawkesville as a heritage conservation district will be the topic of discussion at an open house Monday night in the village.

The Township of Wellesley and the Wellesley Township Heritage & Historical Society will host the event, which runs 7:30-9 p.m. at the Hawkesville Community Centre.

The meeting is the next step in a process that began in 2009 when the township began a study of historical, architectural and cultural sites within the villages of Hawkesville, Linwood, St. Clements and Wellesley. Students and staff from the University of Waterloo’s Heritage Resource Centre and students from a geography class at Wilfrid Laurier University were involved in the study.

The outcome of their surveys indicated Hawkesville residents had the most appreciation of their village’s historical, architectural and cultural amenities, prompting the next step: seeing if the people would be in favour of establishing a heritage conservation district there.

April snow leads to icy roads and collisions crews from St. Jacobs, Elmira, and Floradale responded to a fire call in building 33 of the Chemtura Plant at 25 Erb St. in Elmira. Police say there were no public safety concerns, and the fire is not considered suspicious. There were no injuries, though students at nearby schools were kept indoors until the fire was out and the threat of danger had subsided. The fire is suspected to have been caused by hot oil dripping from a pipe onto some exposed insulation.

“Starting communication is a very important aspect of building the trails master plan,” Mederios said. “This is on different levels, municipal council, residents, real estate agents and developers within the community. This will help alleviate de-

“It was a good experience for all of us,” said Mederios. “By having a plan in place before they do any further development, that would alleviate any contention that exists.”

Snow gone, lawn repair next up in Elmira Damage from sidewalk snow-clearing inevitable, as is the clean-up that follows

all it the in-between time. Not yet safe enough to put away the shovels; too early to start on the lawn. Unless, of course, you’re part of a crew touching up the aftermath of a winter spent clearing sidewalks in Elmira.

Torn-up lawns are an unavoidable byproduct of the machines used to push snow off the walkways, say both township officials and the contractor charged with doing the job. That means now’s the time for making repairs, while the ground is still wet and the ripped-up pieces of lawn can be put back in place with a

reasonable expectation of regrowth.

Beyond that, any work involving resodding or re-seeding will come later in the season, suggests Woolwich’s director of engineering and planning.

“They will be out over the course of the next few weeks fixing those spots needing repairs,” Dan Kennaley said this week, noting his department will be having a season wrapup meeting with thecontractor.

Given the rough winter and the amount of snow, there was an increased amount of grumbling from the public this season, not just about lawn edging but

about timeliness and the quality of the job done.

“The bottom line is we got too many complaints – we want to look for improvement next year,” he said.

Creative Asphalt and Landscape Works of St. Clements is the contractor, hired on in 2009 to clear Elmira’s sidewalks. The bill of some $70,000 a year is covered by a special levy of $20 a year collected from each Elmira homeowner.

While the weather has been too unpredictable to say crews won’t be out clearing sidewalks again this spring, the focus now is on lawn repairs, with the other service issues

In addition to fundraising the event will be the official opening of the trail. Although the trail is open year-round, Cerson hopes good weather will bring people out to celebrate a season full of hiking and biking in the community.

Service clubs, such as the Lions in Elmira, will be stationed along the trail to stamp the passports and host fun activities for trail enthusiasts to participate in. Each group will be running its own activities, including

music, contests, games and food, for those with a passport.

Cerson said the Kissing Bridge Trail Committee is also looking for eager volunteers to help run not only this year’s Spring on the Trail, but events for the next decade as well. Local service groups in each community are already committed to maintaining the trail, however, volunteers are needed to organize larger, crosscommunity events.

“We’re looking for people to take a vested interest in the trail,” he said.

Draves said he will have to speak with township staff before any new course of action is taken.

Jobs, health care top local concerns in campaign Candidates getting feedback from voters as they knock on doors during week-two of federal election race Steve Kannon

uality-of-life issues such as the economy and health care are top of mind with residents as candidates in Kitchener-Conestoga make the rounds in the early going of the federal election campaign.

Away from the melodrama of the national campaigns, the three candidates in the local riding are getting immediate feedback at town-hall meetings and knocking on doors.

People are concerned about jobs, health care and their retirements, says the NDP hopeful, who spent the middle part of the week at forums in Wilmot Township.

“A lot of people are identifying with the NDP message about getting back to basics with how the government runs,” said Lorne Bruce.

“When you hear Jack Layton talking about CPP and GIS

(Guaranteed Income Supplement) – ways of making life more affordable – it resonates with people.”

Rather than theories and promises off in the future, the party is focusing on issues that matter in the day-to-day lives of Canadians, he added.

The experience has been much the same for Liberal candidate Bob Rosehart, who sees economic issues at play in both the rural and urban areas of the riding.

In the townships, the health of the agricultural industry is a big topic, as is the need for good jobs in the smaller communities. In the southwest portion of Kitchener, with its many new Canadians, there’s a pressing need for job opportunities: first jobs for the newer arrivals, and better jobs for those skilled workers who are often underemployed despite their previous training, he said.

A former university president, Rosehart said education and training programs are important parts of a stronger economy.

“We’re facing some economic challenges, particularly in opportunities for young people.”

For the Conservative incumbent, the doorstep issues “run the gamut,” with economic concerns leading the way.

“The economy is improving, but we’re not out of the woods yet,” said Harold Albrecht, noting “people want us to stay the course in terms of the economy.”

He points to plans to lower corporate taxes, reduce the impact of employment insurance costs and support small businesses as his party’s answer to unemployment rates that still hover around 7.8 per cent.

With no riding-specific concerns at play, the local race is following the platforms out-

lined at the national level, where the battle is playing out between a tightly-controlled Conservative campaign calling for stability and opposition stances that put the emphasis on middle-class standard of living rather than a corporate focus.

Opponents are also focusing on the character of Stephen Harper’s government.

“There are ethical issues. People are telling me they don’t like the way Harper does business,” said Bruce, suggesting there’s dissatisfaction with both Conservatives and Liberals – “people are fed up with the other two parties.”

Rosehart, too, says a general mood of change in the air. The Liberals are hoping to place themselves as the alternative for those unhappy with Harper’s leadership.

“It’s time for some new ideas,” he said.

ampaigning for the May 2 federal election began in earnest this week, with campaign stops in the area for all three major party leaders.

Politics junkies and party insiders alike will be focusing their attention on the ridings of Kitchener-Waterloo and Kitchener Centre in the coming weeks.

Both ridings were won

by Conservative candidates by a margin of less than one per cent last election and they have been declared bellweather ridings this time around.

In contrast, Dr. Barry Kay, professor of political science at Wilfrid Laurier Univer-

sity, said the riding of Kitchener-Conestoga will most likely remain a Conservative stronghold.

“The Kitchener-Conestoga riding was won last time by the Conservatives by close to 25 points and it’s hard to imagine that seat being in jeopardy or even being particularly interesting,” he said.

Kay said previous election results as well as community-wide name recognition of incumbent Harold Albrecht, should make the race an easy win for him, even against what Kay called a strong liberal candidate in Dr. Bob Rosehart.

“Dr. Rosehart is certainly a high profile candidate,” said Kay.

“I’m sure the Liberals were happy to pick up someone as prominent as that.”

Kay said he only expects the Liberals to succeed in KitchenerConestoga if there is a dramatic turnaround in Ontario and the party sweeps the province.

Kitchener Centre and Kitchener-Waterloo, however, are too close to call this early in the election. Both seats were Liberal strongholds for more than a decade when they were lost to Conservatives in the last election, the latter by just 17 votes.

“They are extremely close,” Kay said. “Those ridings are very much (indicators) of what’s going on in the province generally.”

Ontario-wide the Conservatives won the last election by five points. In a poll released this week by WLU, the Cconservatives were projected to increase that number to seven points.

“What it looks right now is that the numbers are going to be very comparable to what they were last time,” Kay said.

He predicts factors such as left-wing vote splitting, and low voter turn-out among younger voters, may give the country another Conservative minority government. For now, all eyes are on Kitchener Centre and Kitchener-Waterloo, where the only poll that counts will be the one on voting day.

Crosshill business put on hold for the sake of one word Elizabeth Bate

or the second time in his business life, Kevin Dombrowski has been told his residence has to be re-zoned to accommodate his business.

The owner of Kevin’s Kustoms, a general automotive repair business on Lobsinger Line in Crosshill, has been doing motor vehicle safety inspections, primarily for area dealerships, for about 22 years. Ten years ago he was told by the Wellesley officials he was improperly zoned to be performing the service and had to apply to have his property changed from residential to a specific zoning that would accommodate the business, a process which took him more than seven months.

In late 2010, Dombrowski was told he would have to re-zone again, this time by the Ministry of Transportation. Just one word in the current zoning has been costing Dombrowski about 85 per cent of his business for the last three months, that word is fleet.

“I was zoned (to be a motor vehicle inspection station) for fleet, they said I have to get it changed to public,” he said.

The second re-zoning will cost Dombrowski some $1,600 in fees. At a council meeting Apr. 4, he expressed his frustration at the process he says is costing him time,

money and business.

“All I want to do is change one word, nothing will change, everything will stay exactly the same as it is right now, I want one word changed and that’s it,” he said. “It’s a shame that I have to come up and spend that kind of money to change one word.”

Dombrowski presented council with 42 signatures from Crosshill residents who were in agreement with him being allowed to continue to run his business.

Until the zoning change has been completed, Kevin’s Kustoms is at a near standstill.

Council deferred the decision on the zoning change to the next council meeting to ensure the wording of their bylaw will match the wording required by Waterloo Region. However, Couns.

Jim Olender and Herb Neher were insistent the issue be dealt with soon.

“My concern is, how long is this going to take?” Neher said.

“This seems to me like we have everything, I don’t want this to go on and on. The gentleman is trying to make a buck here and I just want to make sure this isn’t going to get stretched into another month.”

Dombrowski is hoping for a resolution at the next council meeting Apr. 19, but is resigned to another delay in his fight over a single word.

“That’s just government, I guess,” he said.

f it’s true that the world of tomorrow will rely on the children of today to keep Earth a healthy place to live, the kids of Linwood Public School are well on their way to helping make the future just a little bit greener.

Linwood PS, headed up by teacher Ed Piva, has been recognized with the 2011 Tim Walker Memorial Award. Piva completed an application for the environmental award before March Break, and learned last week that they had won. “I’m thrilled about that,� said Piva of the $500 bursary. “I had applied for that award five years ago and then I saw it come up again and thought ‘I’m going to give it a shot.’�

In the time since

he first applied back in 2006, Piva has undertaken a dramatic transformation of the schoolyard at Linwood.

While there were only a handful of trees on the property when the Grade 7 and 8 science, history, and geography teacher started at Linwood, he and the students have planted over 100 native trees and shrubs, set up a butterfly garden, made cedar-plank picnic tables, and even made and installed birdhouses on the site. “It’s just an amazing place now,� he added.

The Tim Walker Memorial Award is actually a $2,000 bursary shared among four schools in the region – two high schools and two elementary schools – with each receiving a quarter of the proceeds to put towards furthering their

environmental efforts within the school. This was the fifth year for the award, which is given out to honour the life of secondary school teacher Tim Walker and his contribution to education and the environment.

Piva intends to add the $500 to some $900 that the school raised by selling baked goods and holding a garage sale. The $1,400 will go towards the purchase of even more trees and shrubs to expand the nature area which is near the school’s playground.

The Waterloo Region District School Board trustees were the ones responsible for choosing this year’s winners. “This project included school greening and shading, which is something we’re trying to encourage at as many schools as we can because it makes a good area for learning in a quiet spot, and it makes the property look much more attractive,� explained Harold Paisley, the trustee for Wellesley and Woolwich townships, as to why they chose Linwood as one of the recipients. “When you do a project like this it becomes a nice hands-on project.To actually get the

Peterson also estimated that 2,500 lb. (1,125 kg) of pancake batter was used throughout the day to make all of those delicious pancakes.

With temperatures in the double digits and

the sun shining all day, the crowds came early – the line for the pancakes formed before the first pancake left the griddle at 7 a.m. – and they stayed for the day to enjoy not only the syrup and the pancakes, but the apple fritters, the turkey legs, the dog show, the midway and the more than 100 vendors who lined the main street of downtown Elmira.

Back in 2000 the Guinness Book of World Records recognized the EMSF as the largest one-day maple syrup festival in the world when it attracted 66,529

people – a number easily surpassed this time around. And while the festival experienced a pancake shortage last year – about 15,000 were flipped in 2010 – this year they were more prepared, and the last pancake came off the griddle at around 2:45 p.m.

In the end, while the festival is a lot of fun for the entire family, it is also for a good cause.

Every year the EMSF gives away grants to a number of local charities and non-profit organizations. Last year they distributed about $50,000 back into the

community to 17 notfor-profit groups. This year will be no different.

“If the number of people that were here this year were spending the money, I’m hoping we can give that away again this year,” said Peterson.

A small army of volunteers are what make the festival happen every year as well. From setting up the day (and night) before, to the 300+ people cooking pancakes throughout the day of the event and the inevitable cleanup afterwards, Peterson estimates that nearly

2,000 volunteers donate their time to make the festival a success each year.

“In a town of 9,500 or so, that’s quite a percentage. How many other communities could boast that?” she said.

The day did include some surprises for festivalgoer’s, including a visit from Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and his wife Terri, who walked throughout the festival and bought food, syrup and even some pussy-willows.

For the festival committee of 25, their final wrap-up meeting was this past Wednesday,

and there are a few more meetings on-tap to decide who will receive the grant money this year.

The final decision for dispersal of the funds will be announced on June 15. Then, the committee members will receive a well-deserved break before starting it all again next September.

“It was a fabulous day. It was beyond what we expected," said Peterson. "We put a lot of hours into it as a committee, and to see that makes it all worth while. The hard work is worth it.”

Federal policies inflame regionalism ... again F

or the provinces, there’s no better time to be making demands of Ottawa: Stephen Harper is prepared to offer up anything to hold on to power.

The latest dust-up follows the federal government’s pledge of a $4.2-billion loan guarantee for a massive hydroelectric project in Newfoundland and Labrador. That outraged Quebec, which received no such support for its own hydro projects. All members of the National Assembly unanimously condemned the move. In response, the Conservatives quickly promised to give Quebec $2.2 billion in compensation for harmonizing its provincial sales tax with the GST more than two decades ago.

Not to be outdone, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty pointed out there’s been no federal money for his province’s overhaul of its aging electrical grid. He’s looking for equal treatment.

“Ontarians should understand 40 per cent of the federal government's money comes directly from Ontarians,” McGuinty said this week. “So when Prime Minister Harper pledges specific aid to another part of Canada for a specific multibillion-dollar project, 40 per cent of that money is coming from Ontarians.”

That kind of interprovincial rivalry is not uncommon. In this case, it’s something of an overreaction: Ottawa is giving money to the project, simply underwriting the loans in order to provide a lower rate. The chance of default is fairly small given the demand for electricity.

But the fallout is the interesting part. And it has much to do with timing. With an election just weeks away, Harper is in damage-control mode.

The timing of the Newfoundland announcement was no coincidence:

But Harper should have known it would play badly in Quebec, where his party is already on thin ice over divisive comments and policies. While that plays well with his Western base, it runs the risk of alienating the province with the second largest number of seats.

And now the largest province is taking aim. It’s an election year in Ontario, and McGuinty won no friends with the HST, despite some financial compensation from Ottawa.

He’ll be looking for more to bolster his own position.

Each and every concession in the East will, in turn, fuel discontent in the West.

Ever was it so. Equal love of porkbarreling aside, the thing Canadian governments do best is squabble amongst themselves. Each province wants a leg up on the others, and each and every one of them claims it’s getting a raw deal from the feds.

Finger-pointing over “have” and “have-not” status routinely comes into play. In recent years, the focus has been on the so-called fiscal imbalance between what a province provides to Ottawa and what it gets back is the latest focus.

McGuinty has been most animated about this, and with good reason given this province’s overwhelming contribution to federal coffers: Ontario pays out some $23 billion more to the federal government than it gets.

Stirring that pot may or may not be good election strategy, but it’s certainly not the way to lead a country.

Arable land a real indicator of a country’s future prospects W International hy is India’s future brighter than China’s, especially in a warming world? Because India has more good agricultural land per person. That will get more and more important as the temperature goes up.

I first encountered the concept of Real Population Density (note the “Real”) when I was interviewing people in the Netherlands last year about how the country would fare as the temperature rose. My initial focus was on sea level rise, because 20 per cent of the country is already below sea level. But the Dutch are confident that they have the sea level problem under control, at least for the rest of this century.

They are already committed to spending large amounts of money to prevent flooding, not by raising the dikes even further, but by “beach replenishment.” When dikes fail, it is generally because they are battered by huge waves – but if you extend the beaches far out to sea (by dredging up sand from even farther out), then the waves do not reach the dikes.

The Dutch sea-level experts were also confident that the Netherlands would not face any problems with food when the temperature rises. The country is, after all, the second or third biggest agricultural exporter in the world.

But it still feels like a very crowded country, so I looked up a few agricultural experts, and they explained the concept of Real Population Density to me.

“It would take a country three or four times the size of the Netherlands to support our present diet,” said Dr. Huib Silvis of the Agricultural Economics Research Institute at Wageningen University. “We import huge amounts of soybean and other animal

GWYNNE DYER feed, which we could not produce ourselves. If we had to be self-sufficient, we would not be eating meat.”

The Real Population Density of the Netherlands – how many people there are per square km. of farmland – is 2,205. That’s higher than Bangladesh (1,946 people per sq. km.), and it means that the Netherlands, to be self-sufficient in food, would have to feed 22 people from each hectare of land.

So how can the country be the second- or third-biggest agricultural exporter in the world? Because that’s the cash value of its exports, which are mostly high value-added products. You get a lot more for a tonne of cut flowers than you do for a tonne of potatoes – but you can’t eat cut flowers, and the Dutch could barely feed themselves from their own resources even now.

Global warming makes matters much worse, because it hits food production very hard. The rule of thumb is that the world loses about 10 per cent of its food production for every rise of one degree Celsius in average global temperature.

So the amount of food that is for sale on the international market drops drastically, because some of the big food-exporting countries aren’t producing enough food to export it any more.

As the food gets scarce, the price goes up.

Countries that can’t feed themselves either pay huge amounts to buy the limited amount of food that is still

available on the international market (if they have the money), or else they go hungry. Which brings us back to India and China.

Almost half the total land area of India is good arable land, whereas only 15 per cent of China is. So although China looks bigger on the map, India has a significantly lower Real Population Density: 753 people per square km of farmland compared to 943 for China.

Add in the fact that China is currently losing about one per cent of its arable land per year to buildings, roads and parking lots, and the numbers for China start to look seriously bad.

They look even worse for the East Asian countries that are already fully industrialized: around 2,900 people per sq. km. for Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. That’s off the scale: nowhere else is that bad apart from some tiny island states like Kiribati, the Maldives and Singapore.

At the other end of the spectrum, look at the big industrialized states in Europe. Italy and Germany are in the 700s, but Spain, France, Sweden and Poland are all in the 300s. So are Brazil, South Africa and Turkey, the most promising of the rapidly developing countries. The lucky ones still have room to grow; the others don’t.

And the uncontested winners in this new lottery? The United States has only 179 people per sq. km of good agricultural land. Argentina has 144, and Russia has 117. Canada is 78, and Australia is 43. Australia, in other words, has more than half a hectare of good land per person.

This is deeply unfair, given which countries are actually responsible for the global warming. To them that hath, shall it be given. But then, you already knew that the universe isn’t fair.

More and more public workers on the sunny side of the street Steve Kannon There’s been an upward trend since reporting such salaries was made mandatory beginning in 1996.

The idea was to show the public how many government employees were pulling in large dollars, even as their unions cried poor in the face of the tougher fiscal policies.

We were meant to be ticked off by the long inventory of names.

Back then, there were 4,319 names on the list. Today it’s grown more than 16-fold.

Perusing the list, few Ontarians would have trouble with the salaries paid to doctors, researchers and similar professionals. There are more than raised eyebrows however over bus drivers, utility workers, firefighters, educators and the like raking in money far in excess of what the average taxpayer makes. Donate blood? You might be surprised to see the name of 201 Canadian Blood Services employees on the list. Perusing the documents, available on the Ministry of Finance website, is an eye-opening experience. For instance, Canada’s new Governor General, David Johnston, made more than $1 million

ing the pay packet outside of 'taxable' benefits. The cost of the OPEBs and non-taxable items add about another 40 per cent onto the compensation package of Ontario public sector employees.”

Once seen as a place where job security came with lower wages, public service now means higherthan-average pay, benefits and working conditions. As the public sector grows, it becomes an even bigger burden.

Between 2004 and 2011, the number of employees in the public sector grew by 20 per cent, to 3.6 million from three million.

The total number of employees in the sector is more than 20 per cent of the national workforce of 17.2 million, according to figures from Statistics Canada.

Salary figures indicate a growing gap between civil service wages and the average earning of private sector employees. The discrepancy is likely to increase, as average industry wages will remain stagnant or decline dramatically in some industries as layoffs take hold. Even though the recession is officially over, unemployment remains high and private-sector wages depressed.

Yet, as we’ve seen in this area, government employees are receiving multi-year deals worth, on average, three to four per cent a year.

With no bottom line – politicians seem to have few qualms about dipping deeper on their repeated trips to the well – governments simply pass the increases along to a public forced to pay taxes, a far cry from the situation faced in the private sector.

Few would begrudge civil servants a decent wage, but when those supported by public money begin making more than those paying the freight, friction is bound to follow.

Other high earners include Ontario Power Generation president Tom Mitchell, at more than $1.3 million; Laura Formusa, CEO of Hydro One, at $955,000; Ontario Realty Corp. president David Glass, $453,164; and LCBO CEO Robert Peter, $431,403.

Woolwich Township has six employees on the list, topped by CAO David Brenneman at $135,728.83.

Four directors sit at $104,000: Christine Broughton (council & information services), Larry Devitt (recreation and facilities), Dan Kennaley (engineering and planning) and Richard Petherick (finance). Fire chief Rick Pedersen rounds off the list at $107,000.

In Wellesley, only CAO Susan Duke made the list, with a salary of $108,675.32.

Inclusion on the list puts government employees in the top five per cent of all earners in the province.

The numbers get even worse when you factor in rich pensions, says Bill Tufts, who runs the website Fair Pensions For All. In a recent opinion piece, he argues the sunshine list should be revised to reflect benefits.

“The list has failed to keep up with the times and needs to be revised. There is a large hidden cost in the list that fails to disclose the true cost to taxpayers. The list includes the 'taxable' benefits portion of a public sector employee’s pay packet. Not included in the list are 'non-taxable' portions of compensation,” he writes.

“Non-taxable items include the cost of OPEBs or Other Post Employee Benefits. These have been ratcheted up as unions work with politicians to find ways of increas-

here’s nothing like the annual sunshine list to get us all hot under the collar … unless we’re one of those lucky enough to be on it.

The annual list of those public sector employees making more than $100,000, growing by leaps and bounds, seems even more galling in an election cycle – municipal last fall, federal right now and provincial in October – when government spending is top-of-mind.

The belt-tightening most of us are enduring leaves us in no mood to accept that others aren’t sharing in the hardships. That goes double for those people paid from the everincreasing taxes taken from our diminishing paycheques.

Various forums, blogs and news sites are filled with vitriol aimed at civil service employees. Talk of inflated wages, generous benefits, casual working conditions and job security fuel countless rants.

While many exaggerate the situation, there’s no arguing there is a growing income gap between public employees and the average taxpayer. When times are tough, the simmering dissatisfaction with that unsustainable situation is bound to boil over. The anger is building up a good head of steam.

The reaction to this week’s revelation 71,478 Ontario public sector workers made more than $100,000 last year – an increase of 11 per cent over 2009 – was hardly surprising.

E

veryone has a list. The list of things you have to do and places you have to see before you kick the bucket, so to speak. Corinne Taylor is crossing items off of hers, while helping others get through their own.

The owner of Bucket List Travel Adventures in Elmira will plan a so-called normal vacation for her clients if they want, filled with all the touristy things one would expect of a trip to Europe or the sunny south, but she specializes in the extraordinary.

A travel agent for more than 16 years, Taylor decided the time was right to move out of her office at Gulliver’s Travel in Waterloo and open her own business, which she now operates mostly from her home.

“I’ve been organizing the small group and adventure trips for about the last five years,” she said. “I decided to take more control of it and focus a bit more of my time on my clients.”

Working from home provides Taylor with a quieter environment than when she had to go into the office every day, allowing her to give her clients the attention they need and she feels they

deserve.

One of the lucky people who gets to pursue what she is passionate about, Taylor said she has always loved to travel. With a long bucket list of places to see, Taylor is excited about sharing these places with fellow travelers.

In groups, usually of about 12, Taylor plans excursions to places like Peru, where she’s hiked the Inca Trail five times. Last year, the tour went to Africa to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

“We climbed Kilimanjaro for seven days on the Whiskey Route and then we safaried for four days.” she said.

“Next year it’s been requested that we do base camp Everest.”

Not all of the trips planned are filled with sightseeing, hiking or relaxing. The last time a group of Taylor’s was in Peru they volunteered at a school, helping to renovate and paint it. This year in Africa a group will be volunteering in an orphanage.

Taylor has seen an increase in requests for volunteering trips – voluntourism – in the last few years.

“I’ve found over the last three or four years people saying ‘we want to go away, but we don’t just want to sit around," she said. “I always had that in the back

Even hospital food is better when it’s local L

eslie Carson is giving hospital food a good name.

Carson, manager of food and nutrition services for Guelph’s St. Joseph’s Health Centre, was recognized earlier this week, along with Rowe Farms, for being committed to quality local food, in a new report called Ontario Local Food Champions.

The report, from Ontario’s Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation, recognizes leaders from public institutions and the agriculture sector that have taken exceptional steps to incorporate more Ontario food onto the plates of municipalities and public institutions.

Carson, who formerly worked at the Freeport Hospital in Kitchener, was cited for “overcoming operational barriers” to provide more Ontario food to clients in a health care facility. Her approach has proven to have many upsides, especially with patients and residents: After she and her team began offering salads and hot dishes made with Ontario foods, satisfaction rate with food service at St. Joseph’s rocketed to 87 per cent (compared to

Carson says the main way she moved the opinion meter on her facility’s food was by eschewing readyprepared food.

Six years ago, when she arrived at St. Joseph’s, ready-prepared food was all they served. Very little food was prepared on site. Good or bad, it had no soul.

And that was a problem. St. Joseph’s patients and residents are mostly seniors, many of them are rural, and they are not accustomed to such prepared food. Further, Carson says staff took little pride in serving it. Having had nothing to do with its preparation, they had no ownership in it.

So she opted for a different path.

She knew the paltry $7.33 per day she and other long-term care facilities

receive from the province to feed three meals a day to senior long-term care residents would only go so far. But she was convinced even that conservative sum would put more local food on patients’ plates.

“I’ve found ready-prepared food to be expensive,” she says. “Try eating it all the time. You’ll go broke.” Plus, with a lot of it being imported, the supply is vulnerable.

But even local food supplies were challenging to find until she discovered distributors and producers who could source local food and ingredients for her, at a reasonable price.

This was pivotal – she didn’t have time to receive myriad local farmers at her receiving dock, and the distributors and producers were savvy at finding quality (and quantity). That, in fact, which resulted in St. Joseph’s relationship with Rowe Farms. Not all local suppliers were as handy, though, so when it came to defining local, she had to take a broad view – as broad as Ontario, in fact, and sometimes even nationwide.

thanks to the local food movement maturing and distribution becoming more sophisticated, she’s found a great deal of meat and produce can now be sourced from around Guelph.

As a result, about three-quarters of the 1,000 meals served by the facility today are prepared and cooked onsite by professional staff. Carson says it’s been great for morale. Employees feel good about creating meals, rather than just unpacking them from a box.

It’s helped them grow, and a sense of growth and pride among staff is vital.

The potential for more local food at institutions across the province is significant. About 115 million meals are served each year to patients and residents at Ontario’s health care facilities, not to mention places such as universities (the University of Toronto was also recognized in the report for its local food initiatives).

Says Burkhard Mausberg, president of Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation: “The more Ontario food purchased by the province’s institutions, the better it is for our economy, environment and farmers.”

A new outlook on life Group of SJK students discover a whole new way of living in Nepal

There were no buses or trucks on this trip. The students and teachers of SJK hiked from village to village during their 19-days in Nepal – often along treacherous trails – to mountain tops and through river valleys.

ineteen days. Nine students. One life-altering experience.

For those 19 days in the middle of March, the group of students from St. John’sKilmarnock school in Breslau experienced the trip of a lifetime when they travelled to Nepal on a good-will mission to help build a playground, provide aid to several communities that are in need, and to experience the Nepali culture first-hand.

Students Ken McAndrews, Maddie Peters, Alex Krucker, Brigitte McIntyre, Rachel Fackoury, Diandra Clohosey, Lexy Ho-Tai, Mary Buse and Brad Champagne trekked and hiked their way through the mountains and villages of Nepal along with SJK teachers Liisa Kukk, Rob Spackman, and Catherin Paleczny, chaperone Blake Neibert, and Spackman’s wife Judy Halpern.

The trip is a bi-annual event that first started back in 1999 by Spackman, a Grade 3 teacher at SJK, and his wife after they’re first visit to Nepal for three months in 1995.

“When we came back we wanted to take students over there so they could experience how the other half of the world lives,” said Spackman. “There was no Internet

Overall, they managed to raise about $25,000 for the trip – which was about $10,000 more than they anticipated they would need to support the salaries of the teachers for another year and for the completion of the playground.

The school has also partnered with the Visram Foundation, which provides dayto-day and ongoing care for destitute and underprivileged children in India. The foundation has committed $15,000 over the next three years for the ongoing work of SJK students and staff in Nepal.

For the students involved on the trip, it was certainly a life-altering experience. Many of them had never been on a trip quite like this one before which involved walking everywhere – a good portion of their travels was spent hiking

from village to village.

The group spent their first three days in Nepal in the capital city before making the two-day trek to Thakani. They spent three days in Thakani painting murals on walls and building the playground, before the two-day trek to Sarmathang – the village where Yangrima school was located – which was down 1,000 metres and up another 1,000 metres across the valley.

“It was not a cake-walk,” said Spackman with a smile.

That proved to be an understatement. The group stayed in traditional lodges along the way, which were merely small dorm-type additions onto typical Nepali homes, where they ate traditional meals with the owners.

Spackman likened it to being billeted by local families and friends he has maintained contact with over the years; it was an experience that many of the students found eye-opening.

“I don’t think you can really describe some of the days, because when you say you trekked, people think about hiking in Beaver Valley, but trekking in Nepal isn’t the same,” laughed Grade 12 student Brigitte McIntyre.

Risotto is just one of those types of recipes, where it is not an exact science, but rather watching and feeling (and of course tasting!) for it to be done correctly.

Here are a few facts about risotto.

Risotto hails from northern Italy.

Risotto is a complete dish and a cooking method of any grain, and not a type of rice. The rice used to make risotto is called Arborio, which is a short grain, high starch rice. By adding liquid – usually a meat broth – in stages (as opposed to all at once) the rice cooks slowly, bringing out its starch. This is why a risotto appears to be creamy. No traditional risotto ever involves the addition of cream, but rather butter at the end to give it shine, and cheese to give it salty flavour.

In a larger saucepot or Dutch oven, heat the canola oil over medium-high heat; Add the onion and sautĂŠ until soft; Add the Arborio rice and cook one minute; turn heat to medium; Add the wine, stirring constantly until wine has almost

been incorporated; Add 1 ladle (approx. 3/4 of a cup) of water or stock and stir constantly until it is absorbed.

Continue to add the water or stock, ladle by ladle, stirring constantly between additions until each amount is absorbed; Turn heat to low; after all stock has been added, rice should be al dente and not too dry. This should take around 20 minutes.

Add extra stock if there is no residual liquid in the pot; Finish risotto by adding the

butter and cheese and asparagus tips, stirring constantly; Season to taste; Serve hot, immediately! Risotto should not be so thick that you can stand a spoon in it: it should have some residual liquid.

Kings one win away from hoisting Cherrey Cup Wednesday night’s win over Listowel puts Elmira up 3-2 in series heading into fateful weekend

he Elmira Sugar Kings sit one win away from a Sutherland Cup appearance thanks to a gritty, hardfought 1-0 win over the Listowel Cyclones on home ice Wednesday night. The victory put them up 3-2 in their best-of-seven series in the Cherrey Cup finals.

“Wow, that’s pretty exciting for everybody,” said coach Geoff Haddaway outside of the Kings’ dressing room following the win.

“A little too hard on both coaches though, I’m sure,” he added.

The win was a tremendous

bounce-back game for goaltender Nick Horrigan and the Kings, who were handily defeated 5-1 one night earlier in Listowel in a game that saw Horrigan pulled after the fourth goal.

The keeper rebounded on Wednesday, stopping all 25 shots for the shutout.

Haddaway said that not only his goalie was better on this night, but the entire team as well.

“It was from Nick all the way out,” said Haddaway. “Nick was good, but I thought we were great in front of him and we had total commitment in the D-zone to play defensive hockey.”

The lone goal came courtesy of Lukas Baleshta on the powerplay in the second period when he pounced on a loose puck in a crowd of players in front of the Listowel net The point shot was bobbled by keeper Anthony Peters and the puck somehow ended up right on Baleshta’s stick in front of an open net.

“I said in my mind, ‘please don’t blow the whistle because I can see the puck’ and he (Baleshta) just had to put it in the empty net,” said Haddaway. “I could have scored that one.”

Back home last Sunday afternoon, the Kings answered back with one of their best defensive efforts of the playoffs by winning a tight 2-1 match in front of their home crowd. Listowel’s Caleb Cameron opened the scoring 11:56 into the first and Brad Kraus answered back six minutes later from Campbell and MacDonald.

Ryan Clarkson scored the eventual winner at 4:52 of the second from Baleshta and Colton Wolfe-Sabo. Horrigan was strong in net making 32 saves for the win.

hree Woolwich girls’ rep teams have qualified for the OWHA provincial finals, and are currently battling it out with the rest of the best teams in Ontario in the Brampton and Mississauga area. They are the Atom C, the Peewee BB, and the Midget B squads.

The teams will be looking to carry on the success of the boy’s Woolwich rep teams that sent four teams to the provincial OMHA finals last month, capturing

two of them.

“Woolwich girls’ hockey has been lucky to send at least one team to provincials pretty much every year, and to have three out of six teams to qualify it’s just great,” said Angela Tuffnail, president of Woolwich girls’ minor hockey.

“You can’t ask for any more than that.”

As the ice disappears, it’s time for some hard choices T

his, to me, is always a bittersweet time of year. By month’s end, the ice will have left our local lakes and the turkey and the general trout season will be open. And so I, and countless of other outdoorsy types, will have to make a hard decision between spending every waking hour hunting, fishing or spending time with our loved ones.

But, I ask you, how is a person supposed to choose? I mean the choice between hunting and fishing is never easy.

This, of course, was the conundrum that I faced yesterday when I first planned a daring expedition into my outdoors storeroom. Oh, I know I shouldn’t have forayed into the place alone. After all the contents are piled to the ceiling and unstable. But I had to. Turkey and trout season are fast approaching.

It’s not like I didn’t take some precautions. I mean I phoned my buddy and told him my intentions.

“Tom,” I said. “I’m going in to the

I thought about it, and then proceeded to give him my starting GPS coordinates and a brief outline of my intended route.

“I’m going to try to scale the east slope of fishing tackle mountain,” I began.

“But that’s never been done before!” he gasped. “You’ll be caught in a landslide. There are at least five big nets there.”

“It’s the only way to get to the turkey hunting vest and calls,” I replied. “Then I can begin an assault on K-9 to get my fly fishing vest and rod.”

“K-9?” he whispered. “The hunting dog gear?”

There was a moment of silence as we both considered the implications.

“You need an emergency plan at least,” he said. “What if things go wrong and you get pinned by the arm under all that stuff ?”

“It’s OK,” I muttered. “I’ve sharpened my pen knife.”

“How will you fly-fish without an arm?”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Did you think I was going to cut off my own arm just to escape?”

“You said you sharpened your pen knife.”

“Yes,” I said. “It needed it but that doesn’t mean I’m planning on amputating anything. That’s crazy.”

“You’re right,” he said. “Sorry.”

“No,” I answered. “I’ve got flares.”

“Oh.” I’m happy to report that everything basically went as planned.

On Tuesday night Listowel cracked Horrigan yet again, this time putting four pucks past him on just 17 shots to go up 4-0 at 14:40 of the second period before he was pulled in favour of Matt Smith. The Cyclones would add one more before the end of the period to make it 5-0. Elmira’s Clayton Greer broke the shutout bid with just over three minutes left in the game on the powerplay from Wade Pfeffer and Spencer MacCormack.

As he has shown all series, Horrigan once again bounced back and posted the shutout on Wednesday night to put the Kings on the brink of advancing to the Sutherland Cup for the first time in three years.

Wednesday night featured some good old-fashioned hockey with big hits all over the ice and big saves from the goalies at both ends as well.

Listowel keeper Anthony Peters was the busier of the two, making 50 saves in the hard-luck loss, but Horrigan managed to match him shot for shot and finished with 25 saves of his own.

Both teams tried to get into the face of each goaltender all night, causing countless scrums and melees after the whistle.

“I thought they did a good job of playing good, physical, clean hockey,” said Haddaway of both teams.

“That’s just an intense playoff hockey game out there.”

While the first period only had one minor penalty

I stopped and took a deep breath and looked at all the gear on the floor at my feet. There it was. Everything I needed for hunting turkeys or fishing for trout were buried in the pockets of those two old garments. And with them were a ton of memories.

Did this make the decision any easier?

Latta scored a hat trick and set up a fourth goal in the Storm’s 6-5 loss on home ice Sunday night. Saginaw claimed the series in six games.

Latta opened the scoring just 4:35 into the first on a hard wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle to the right of Spirit goaltender Mavric Parks.

He added a second goal to give the Storm a 2-1 lead at 17:26 of the first, and if you had blinked you would have missed it. The centre slapped the puck past Parks directly off the faceoff to the left of the Saginaw net, catching everyone – Parks included – completely offguard.

From there on it was all Saginaw as the Spirit scored five straight goals to take a 6-2 lead, capped off by the sixth goal just 3:46 into the third.

The Storm wouldn’t go lightly in their own build-

Latta assisted on Peter Holland’s goal at 13:25 on the powerplay to make it 6-4 on a nice cross-crease pass, then completed the hat-trick with a dandy goal at 18:04 – also on the powerplay – by flipping the puck between his legs right in front of the Saginaw goal and into the top corner to make it 6-5.

It was not meant to be however, as the Spirit weathered the storm and didn’t allow the tying goal late.

Following the loss, the 19-year-old reported to the Milwaukee Admirals, AHL affiliate of the Nashville Predators – the team that selected Latta in the third round, 72nd overall, back in the 2009 NHL entry draft in Montreal.

This season the 6’0”, 213lb centre finished with 34 goals and 89 points in 68 games with the Storm – all career highs – and added five goals and 10 points in six playoff games.

For his career, Latta has tallied 103 goals and 247 points in 241 career OHL games split between the Ottawa 67’s and the Guelph Storm, and he has added 22 points in 19 career playoff games.

average (POA), players submit their average scores as a baseline heading into the tournament. Then, in each game they tally their score and however many pins they finish above their average gives them a positive score, but every pin under their average they receive a negative score.

To qualify, the boys were paired up to compete at the Zone C championship against other local teams from Stratford, Kitchener, and other nearby bowling clubs, which they won. The pairing works by matching the bowler with the lowest average at the club with the bowler with the highest average.

Heading into the provincials, Cade had an average of 99 while Palmer’s was slightly lower at 90 for a combined score of 189, but they handily surpassed those totals on the day of the competition.

In the first match they bowled a combined score of 249 (60 over their average), in the second they scored 266, in the third game they

scored 254, but it was the final match where they really showed their development as players by bowling a 313 – an impressive 124 pins over their average.

Tughan, who has more than 20 years experience as a coach, said that a key to the boy’s success is that they are easy to coach; they listen very well, they follow instructions well, and are very good at concentrating.

She also said the competition was a good way for the boys to not only gauge themselves against other Bantam-aged bowlers in the province from as far away as Ottawa and London, but was alos a chance to expose themselves to some competition as well, which they might not always experience while practicing on Saturday morning at Elmira Bowl, focusing more on the technical side of the sport.

And the results speak for themselves.

That same Midget team went on to only lose one game in 22 regular-season matches this year and hopes to come home with the gold this time around.

“The girls are excited, and they’re going with the expectation to win,” said head coach Brett Barriage. “But they also know they’ll want to enjoy the experience because for about six of them this is the last time they’ll play minor hockey.”

The team of girls, ranging from 15 to 17 years old, was among the first teams in Woolwich when girls’ hockey was founded back in 2001, so it’s something of a bittersweet moment for Barriage, who has seen the girls grow up and develop right from the get-go.

“It’s going to be tough when it’s all said and done, that’s for sure.”

To advance to the finals the Midget club went undefeated against regional opponents Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Brantford, and Twin Centre, with only the top team in each region advancing.

The girls are guaranteed three games, and played against Durham West and Petrolia yesterday (Friday) and face off against Aurora today (Saturday). The quarterfinals go tonight and the semis and finals are tomorrow.

For the Peewee BB team, coached by Karen Martin, who was one of the forces behind the founding of girls’ minor hockey in Woolwich 10 years ago, reaching the provincials was on the team’s radar early in the season.

The team of 11- and 12-yearolds finished second in the regular season at 15-6-1, and advanced to the provincials by sweeping Kitchener and Waterloo in the regionals.

Martin said that while the girls are excited to be taking part in the tournament this weekend, they also need to

focus on the task at hand.

“The girls need to be proud of their accomplishment to get there, but now the real test begins now that we are here.”

The team will match up against Burlington, Aurora, and Whitby before hopefully advancing to the elimination rounds on Saturday and Sunday as well.

Tween ringette team scores silver

Finally, for the Atom C club, reaching the provincial championships is the culmination of a season of learning and building upon the basic hockey skills they learned in Novice.

The club didn’t have the best record in their league – in fact they were eighth out of nine teams and had a record of 5-13-4 – but the second half of the season marked a tremendous turnaround for the girls, said head coach Ryan Burkholder.

“It really feels now like we have a full team of contributors instead of just a few doing the lion’s share,” he said of his team of 9- to 11-year-olds. “About a third of the way through the season we acquired a player from Stratford and it helped our team to gel quite a bit.

All of a sudden it was like a light came on for a lot of our girls, and everybody seemed to start pitching in.”

The team beat Brantford and Twin Centre to advance to the provincial finals this weekend. The girls played Peterborough and Sault Ste.

Marie yesterday, and will go against Milverton today.

The quarterfinals are also this evening and the finals set for Sunday.

For all three teams, qualifying for the provincial finals is an accomplishment in itself, but it’s what they do from here on out that will truly define their teams – and even their seasons.

Coach Martin perhaps said it best by stating, “They have to want it, and a lot of it comes down to work ethic.

The teams that want it the most, and want to work the hardest, will probably win it in the end.”

MCC fashion show nets $12,000 Elizabeth Bate

T

he Mennonite Central Committee held its second annual fashion show and shopping fundraiser on Apr. 4 at Bingemans in Kitchener.

Heather Gallian was the organizer of the event for the second time.

“It went very well. It was a huge success,” said Gallian. “It was a lot of people, a lot of good clothes and a lot of shopping.”

The show saw more than 400 attendees who watched a parade of clothes from two MCC locations and then were let loose on the donated clothing to shop until their arms were full and their wallets were empty. The efforts raised about $12,000 for this year’s charity. That figure was double last year’s total of about $6,000.

“The items that were modeled were for sale, but we also had racks and racks of other clothing,” said Gallian. “We definitely came home with a lot less than we took.”

The money raised will be going to help homeless women in the Wa-

terloo Region through Circle of Friends, an MCC project that works with Mary’s Place, a shelter and support centre run by the Kitchener YWCA. Many of the models were Circle of Friends participants.

“They basically get a circle of women around a woman who is struggling with homelessness. It’s a support group or a network of people to help that person get re-established,” said Gallian.

Last year’s funds were raised for a training centre for women in the Sudan. This year, Gallian wanted to focus on a local project.

“It just seemed like a really good fit,” she said. “The majority of the people that came last night were women and the majority of our shoppers (in the store) are women and it just seemed to connect.”

In addition to seeing the show, two women from the Circle of Friends program talked with attendees about their experiences with the programs.

“I think just to hear those real-life stories was meaningful for people.”

performers, including Nathan Jagger on guitar, and Austin Wilson and Chris Scott, who will be putting on a display of fighting techniques. Drama student Brittney Ince (left) will be overseeing the event, which will take place in the gym. Show time is 7:30 p.m. Admission is $2.
