Memorial commemorations proceed as planned in Mt. Lebanon

While some South Hills communities canceled Memorial Day ceremonies because of troubling weather forecasts for May 27, the band played on, the commemorations commenced and the parade proceeded in Mt. Lebanon and throughout neighboring Dormont.

“We would not cancel a ceremony this important,” said Mt. Lebanon Public Information Officer Laura Pace Lilley. “People who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country deserve to be recognized and thanked. So if anything, we would have moved it inside.”

Despite threatening skies, Mt. Lebanon held a moving service outside at the Veterans Memorial Park, located just off Cedar Boulevard.

They weren’t exactly singing in the rain, but those attending the grand opening of the Fairview Park Splash Park in South Fayette Township on a soggy May 17 shrieked with delight as they raced from one water feature to another.

“It’s cool,” shouted Levi Bardo. “Fun.”

Bardo’s sister, Lucy, agreed: “So glad it’s here. I love it.”

Luke Dilodeau especially enjoyed the buckets that soaked people from 10 feet above after filling up with water. He also liked the squirt guns that enabled him to wage a water war against his friends.

“I’m really excited,” Dilodeau said. “It’s going to be a great summer.” With sunnier days ahead assured Andrea Iglar, the director of communications and community development for the township.

Iglar explained that the grand opening, which included entertainment, a food truck, and dignitaries, was ironically a dry run to make sure everything was in working condition for the season.

“Hopefully we have better weather,” Iglar said. “We fig-

ured the splash pad was water anyway so a little bit more rain would make it more fun for the kids. That’s why we said rain or shine.”

Despite the dark clouds above, the splash pad sparkled. There are 25 different

Area pools open for season

The summer solstice will occur June 20, but many area residents aren’t waiting to beat the heat. They’re diving into their local watering holes to cool off from unseasonably warm weather.

Matt and Michele Owens kicked off the Sun-and-Fun season early by taking their two young sons, Blake and Hayes, to Dormont Pool for opening day on May 25.

“It was refreshing because it was really hot,” said Michele Ow-

ens of the unheated facility. “It felt nice because it was so warm.”

“Nice pool,” added Matt Owens. “It’s great for the family.”

The Owens family purchased a season pass because it allows them admission 15 minutes early on weekends. “You can get a nice spot,” Matt said.

The daily rate of $8 per person is affordable though for a family of four, he added.

In addition to a slide, there are crafts for the children and a concession stand.

The Dormont Pool is open weekdays from noon to 7:30 p.m., and until 8 p.m. on weekends and will remain open through Sept. 2. The pool is closed the first Monday of each month. Visit: boro.dormont.pa.us/ dormont-pool for more details on the facility, located at 1801 Dormont Ave. In addition to Dormont Pool, there are plenty of places to take a dip this summer.

The event included a welcome from Mt. Lebanon commission President Anne Swager Wilson, an invocation and benediction by the Rev. Laura Strauss from Sunset Hills United Presbyterian Church, a presentation of colors by the Mt. Lebanon Police Department’s honor guard, and a placing of the wreath ceremony.

The Mt. Lebanon High School marching band provided the music for the national anthem and “Taps.”

The ensemble also performed a medley of tunes from each branch of the military service.

“On this most solemn and reverent occasion, we honor those who gave the supreme sacrifice for our country,” Wilson said.

She added that the country shows its gratitude on this day to those who gave all and she strongly encouraged those in attendance to make note of the names of the residents on the memorial pylon. “(They) bravely stood up to evil so that you and I might be free today.”

Dominic J. Pellicciotti was the keynote speaker. He served four years in the United States Navy before earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting and starting a family. A Wells Fargo employee, he has been married 25 years to his wife, Barbara. He has two children, Dominic, 20, and Louis, who will serve in the military upon graduation in June.

Regardless of weather, he noted that while serving on a warship in which he lost 47 of his shipmates, one carried out his duty. He recalled how during operations in the north Atlantic, he encountered 30-foot seas.

“That’s an interesting experience,” he explained. “In the Navy, we steamed full speed ahead whether it rained or stormed.

“It’s important that this day happens, rain or shine,” he added. “It’s very important because we need to keep the stories of the veterans that died serving this country to protect our freedoms alive. That can’t be done unless we tell their stories and remember them. That is what Memorial Day is for.”

Pellicciotti noted that many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The latter is to honor those who served in the military. The former is to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation.

“Today is the day to remember and honor them.

My hope is that we will never forget all Americans who died to give us our freedoms and died protecting those freedoms. It is our duty to ensure that their stories are not lost and that their memories and the impact they have had on this great nation will live on.”

Pellicciotti reflected upon the turmoil tearing the country apart. He noted that since the pandemic, the nation has seen “unprecedented attacks” on freedom of speech, due process to the rule of law and freedom of worship.

“Basically our entire Bill of Rights,” he said. “We need to reflect on our precious Constitution and this great country. Don’t ever be afraid to make sacrifices to protect our freedoms because freedom isn’t free.”

Because they knew service men that sacrificed for the United States, Mary Abbott and Sue Watson would never miss a Memorial Day commemoration because of the elements.

Abbott had an uncle that went down with a ship near Salerno in Italy during World War II. Her father, John Ropar, also served as a paratrooper in the Pacific corridor. A wounded warrior, he also was a member of MacArthur’s Honor Guard in Okina-

wa. Abbott also has a daughter, Christen, who attended the U.S. Air Force Academy.

“This day is immensely important,” Abbot said. “I would have been disappointed if this (ceremony) was canceled,” she said. “Unless it was unsafe. Thunder. Tornadoes. I feel it should go on. I am not going to melt.”

Watson dissolved emotionally, the death of her dad still raw. John G. (Jack) Watson passed away at age 98 on Aug. 15, 2022. A sergeant in the Marines, he served in the Pacific Theater from 1942-46. He participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.

“It was the bloodiest battle and he carried those memories with him silently,” Watson said. “When you live as long as he did, people seek you out. So he was honored. Saluted for his service. Treated like royalty,” she added. Watson noted that after a recognition at a Steelers football game, Jack broke down weeping as they walked back to their car. “He said, ‘I am not a hero.’ The ones he visited at the cemetery were.”

For so many people, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. Pools open. Schools are closing until September.

“All of that is awesome because it’s what these guys fought for. Our ability to enjoy and be free,” Watson said. “However, this is a really hard day for people who fought. They struggle silently. Not necessarily with PTSD but the silent struggles that buckle their knees on days like today. Watson said that her dad fought in ‘horrible’ conditions. She also explained that the Vietnam soldiers battled in monsoon rains.

“So we can stand here in the rain,” she said, “because this is an incredibly important day.” The significance of the day was not lost on a young couple from neighboring Dormont. They had moved into the borough last November. Florida transplants, Matt and Michele Owens brought their sons, Blake and Hayes, to the South Hills Memorial Day parade, which weaved through Brookline and Dormont on its way to Mt. Lebanon Cemetery for another commemoration.

Michele Owens said she was “shocked” to hear of the cancellations in other communities. Additionally, she was surprised at the lack of memorial ceremonies in the area.

“For sure, I thought there would be more commemorations especially in Pittsburgh with its history,” said the Connecticut native. “I’m not sure if it’s just a weather thing this year but I am happy this one still was going on. It’s a wonderful thing to bring up all together to show our appreciation for all those that served and continue to serve.”

USC has 9 merit finalists

Nine Upper St. Clair High School seniors were recently named finalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Lucas S. Bishop, Leona Chen, Hunter F. Maher, Caroline E. Murphy, Mahir N. Parmar, Alex H. Sun, Arjun A. Suresh, Lauren M. Tenney and Isabella Zhang were selected on the basis of their SAT scores, grades,

essays and letters of recommendation.

In September, these Upper St. Clair students were named semifinalists in the competition for scoring in the top 1% of all juniors completing the PSAT in October 2022.

Founded in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. Students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT – the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test – during the fall of their junior year. The top one percent (nearly 16,000 students) qualify as semifinalists.

As finalists, the seniors are now competing for scholarships that will be offered and announced later this spring.

in-surface and above-surface water features covering 4,000 square feet. An estimated 100 children can play together, and an additional 190 parking stalls have been added for the more than $1.5 million project.

The splash pad was part of a park expansion when the township purchased the former Mayview Hospital property. Fairview Park is now the second largest park in the township and includes a pavilion with restrooms, a fenced dog park and three ballfields.

The site also includes solar-powered picnic tables with phone/device chargers and shade umbrellas.

The new pavilion was built next to the splash pad and is available to rent for picnics, parties and other functions. A plaza with picnic tables is available to splash park patrons when the pavilion is being rented.

Access to the park can now be made off of Mayview Road as well as the original entrance off of Greenwood Drive. The paved path throughout the park has been named Recreation Road.

Iglar said the township is “really excited” about the splash pad because it is the first recreational amenity South Fayette has. The township does not have an outdoor pool or a YMCA-related facility.

“It’s a fun water feature,” she said. “So this was a way that was more cost effective to offer residents.”

The splash pad is free and open to the public, regardless of residency. The township will monitor the facility as it does all of its parks. Additionally, there is a surveillance camera on the property for safety.

South Fayette is the first in the area to open a splash pad. Bethel Park was scheduled to open its facility over the Memorial Day weekend. Scott Township is converting part of its kiddie pool into a splash pad. An opening date is pending.

According to John Barrett, it has taken three years to see the

project through as it required government funding as well as assistance from a grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

“It takes a lot to bring something like (this). A lot of support,” said the township manager. “It’s taken a lot of resolve. It’s a joyous day to be here, and everyone is brave to be out here.”

State Rep. Jason Ortitay agreed. He and his daughter participated in the grand opening event, even enjoying a quick spray on the pad.

“Thank you, for persevering to get this done” he addressed the assembled during his remarks. “We’re looking forward to doing more projects like this. This is a gem here.”

Paula Willis agreed. She is the South Fayette Township parks and recreation director.

“This project means a lot to me,” she said.

The splash pad will be open every day of the week from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. throughout the summer. Remaining open beyond Labor Day will depend upon the weather.

Taking the crown

Mt. Lebanon girls win WPIAL title

Mt. Lebanon continues its remarkable season in girls lacrosse when the Blue Devils embark on PIAA tournament play on June 4.

During the 2024 campaign, the Blue Devils captured a section banner with a perfect 8-0 record. On May 23, Lebo won a WPIAL title. After three consecutive runner-up performances, the Blue Devils claimed the Class 3A crown when they defeated Pine-Richland, 16-11, at Joe Walton Stadium on the Robert Morris University campus.

“I didn’t want to be the Buffalo Bills,” said Lebo skipper Brian Kattan. “No offense to Buffalo.” None taken as Kattan is no Marv Levy, who coached that NFL franchise to four consecutive Super Bowls in the 19990s only to lose each one of them.

Kattan is one of the winningest coaches in the WPI-

AL. He entered the 200-victory club this season when the Blue Devils toppled rival Upper St. Clair, 11-10, during the regular season. He also guided Lebo to a non-section win against the Rams before the playoffs commenced.

Lebo entered the post season undefeated and as the

top seed. In school history, there are six WPIAL titles to go along with the runner-up trophies from 2021 to 2023.

“Winning a section is always our goal. So that was great to do. Another great achievement was getting that No. 1 seed going into the playoffs,” Kattan said. “Winning a WPIAL title

is a much bigger aspiration. We knew it wouldn’t be easy because there were a lot of very good teams out there. It was one of the deeper years for the WPIAL.”

After receiving a firstround bye in the tournament, Lebo defeated North Allegheny, 17-3, and Shady Side Academy, 13-10, to reach the championship match. It was a rematch of last year’s final where Lebo lost a heartbreaker to the Rams, 13-12.

Lebo again boasted one of the best players in the district in Addison Murdoch. The Pitt recruit scored her 200th career goal in the triumph over NA. She has scored more than 50 goals this season.

Murdoch is one of three sisters to have excelled at Lebo. Older sister, Reagan finished with 199 career goals. She plays at American University but was on the sidelines cheering on her siblings. Younger sister, Quinn, is a scoring machine

Mt. Lebanon runner wins gold at states

Eleanor Bailey Almanac Sports Editor ebailey@thealmanac.net

Logan St. John Kletter from Mt. Lebanon capped her scholastic career by claiming two gold medals during the PIAA Class 3A track and field championships held May 24-25 at Shippensburg University.

“Absolutely amazing senior year,” she said. “It’s been all that I could ask for. I am super happy.”

St. John Kletter began the school year winning district and state titles in cross country. Then she collected national acclaim finishing third in the country at the FootLocker finals in San Diego. She also dominated the indoor scene, winning local and state titles.

This spring, she won her second straight crowns in the 1600- and 3200-meter races before heading to the state finals.

On the first day of the competition, St. John Kletter won the 1600 with a personal-best time of 4:38.54. The mark was also the fastest time ever clocked by a WPIAL athlete. Moon’s Mia Cochran ran a 4:40.79 when she claimed three individual titles (800, 1600, 3200) in 2022.

“I got sixth last year so to check this box off and get this done my senior year is a good feeling but to own that time is amazing,” she said. “There have been some incredible runners out of the WPIAL so to get that No. 1 spot is pretty cool.”

Three laps into the race, Olivia Cieslak from Haverford Township matched St. John Kletter step for step. St. John Kletter closed with a 1:05.75 while Cieslak finished 13 seconds back with a 4:45.35 time.

“She was right there with me but I ended up closing with 65 (seconds), which is the fastest I have ever closed,” St. John Kletter. “I

was accelerating through the backstretch. I didn’t know if she was there or not but I honestly didn’t really care because I was just kicking. I was the state environment that helped me close.”

St. John Kletter closed out her final state meet with her second gold medal in the 3200. She won the two-mile in 10:21.46, some 12 seconds ahead of Morgan Roemer from DuBois.

“It’s tough to be alone and push yourself hard when you are by yourself so I used the lap runners to switch gears,” St. John Kletter said. “All I wanted to do was give it my best. I gave it all I had. So you can never be disappointed winning a state championship.”

Before she graduates and heads to North Carolina, St. John Kletter will be chasing more records and awards. She will be competing in the Hoka Festival of Miles in St. Louis; the Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle and the New Balance Nationals in Philly in the upcoming weeks. St. John Kletter was The Almanac’s only winner at states but two additional females finished on the podium and claimed medals. Teammate Selma Bajgoric finished fifth in the 400 dash while South Fayette’s Olivia Renk secured seventh place in the 100.

BP follows WPIAL script

Hawks finish runner-up in baseball

Eleanor Bailey Almanac Sports Editor ebailey@thealmanac.net

Getting to the WPIAL baseball championship game isn’t difficult for Bethel Park. Winning a title though is. By dropping a 4-3 decision to Penn-Trafford on May 28 at Wild Things Park in Washington, the Black Hawks lost their eighth consecutive title tilt. Three of those appearances have come in the past four years. Bethel Park has only two district banners in school history; the first in 1985 and the last in 1987.

There’s been a silver lining to BP’s 37-year title drought.

against a good team. When you put up a big, crooked number like that, it makes it tough to come back from.

Lebo skipper Mike Ermer agreed but cautioned the task ahead is daunting.

“The competition is only going to get stiffer, but we hope to play a little while longer,” he said. “Our guys seem to rise to the occasion.”

of challenging for a state title. The PIAA tournament begins with first-round action June 4 and concludes with the finals set 4:30 p.m. June 15 at Panzer Stadium on the Penn State University campus. Winning a WPIAL title said Miles Halter is “awesome, but we have been planning for this for a while. This is not the end. There are still a lot of games left to win here.”

The Black Hawks have captured three state championships; two back-to-back in 2021 and 2022. They embark on another PIAA journey when they travel to face the District I champion on June 3.

“We still have the top of the mountain that we talk about climbing at the beginning of the season,” said BP skipper Patrick Zehnder. “We followed this path before. I would love to take a different path but we know this way. We’ll be ready to go.”

The Black Hawks were prepared to take the District VII title route but they hit a major roadblock when they surrendered four runs, two of them unearned, in the fourth inning against the Warriors. With one out, Ethan Septak and Brody Hoffman walked and scored on Ian Temple’s misplayed fly ball to right field. Carmen Metcalfe followed with an RBI on a squeeze bunt. Brayden Stone then drilled a double to knock in the game-winning run.

“It’s tough when it does boil down to one bad inning,” Zehnder said. “Sometimes that is all it takes

“It stinks to come out like this,” Zehnder added. “A lot can happen on a ball like that (one in the fourth) but you have to find ways to make plays in big moments. They made more than we did.”

BP’s big moments came in the third when Ryan Walsh tagged a two-run double opening up a 2-0 lead for the Black Hawks and in the fourth frame when Ethan Stanhoff smacked a sacrifice fly ball to center, scoring pinch runner Aaron Hofbauer.

as well for the Blue Devils. The sophomore is the team’s second-leading scorer.

“All three (Murdochs) were strong in their own way. Great leaders but different,” Kattan said. “Addy and Quinn are very good players and teams often try to shut them off but when that happens it opens up the field for others,” he continued.

Though Addison was held scoreless against the Rams, she dominated the face-offs while seven different players contributed to the scoring. Six of them tallied goals and one – Mollie Steingroewer – provided an assist.

“Balance has been the key for us,” Kattan said. “We knew they would shut off Addy because they did that the last time we played. They did not think the rest of our team could score goals but we have enough people who can score goals. We knew we could pick them apart with everybody else. It was tremendous.”

Quinn Murdoch exploded for five tallies and one assist.

Morgan Daniels, Sarah Hudak and Lucy Pryor each had hat tricks while Nora Austin and Grace Golsin provided single goals to the attack.

Lebo opened up a 3-0 advantage but the Rams tied the match with 4:26 left in the first frame. The game was also tied at 6 and 7 goals each before Lebo again managed

a three-goal advantage twice before finishing off the game with three unanswered scores.

“They are a very good team,” Kattan conceded. “We knew we were not going to win this game by 10. No chance of that.

“We go with the ebb and flow of the game and make sure we stay in the moment,” he added. “We did not get too high or too low with what we did. They were very focused

on what we needed to do, which was tremendous.”

According to Quinn Murdoch, the Blue Devils had worked hard for this championship all year. That single-minded approach paid off for Lebo.

“We tried to do our best,” she said. “It was a great game between us and Pine but we deserved it. We put a lot into this. It was awesome and really fun out there because

we are a great team and it’s a team game. We played well as a team and that’s because it’s a very loving, team environment.

“This was such a meaningful accomplishment because of last year’s outcome. We all wanted to play hard, me included. So this was nice and awesome to be able to do for our coach and for the team.”

During the season and throughout the playoffs, Pryor and Cali Green joined the Murdochs in the midfield. A sophomore, Pryor also plays soccer in the fall. Green is a freshman.

“Those girls have learned from Addy and they are prepared for a bright future,” Kattan said. “To have such a strong and good midfield that is that young is pretty impressive.”

Hudak has been awe-inspiring after coming off a knee injury last year. She and Austin excel on the attack. Both are seniors. Hudak is bound for Clemson and Austin to Virginia upon graduation.

Additionally, Daniels and Steingroewer have played well on the attack. They, too, are seniors. Daniels is off to Penn State in the fall and Steingroewer has been accepted at Ohio State.

Defensively, the Blue Devils have been equally strong. The four starters include: Goslin, who will study at Yale in the fall; Olivia Maher, a senior who is bound for Elon; Chloe Shea, a sophomore, and Lilly Anderson. A senior, who plays

field hockey in the fall, will compete at Allegheny College.

Madison Flynn anchored the defense. The senior goalkeeper will study art and history at Penn State University next semester. She faced 11 shots and had four saves against the Rams in the championship match.

“Madison has done a nice job all year for us. She works hard,” Kattan said.

“Next to balance, defense is another strength,” he continued. “That group has done a great job. They’ve stepped up all season. They are able to settle and get the ball back (on offense) quickly.”

Depth is another asset for Lebo.

The Blue Devils rely on the athleticism and versatility of Lilly Cramer and Shea McCarthy off the bench. Cramer is also a member of the track team while McCarthy is a member of the basketball team.

The team also depends upon Abby Baer, McKenna Wertz, Nina Crago, Vivi Warhola and Grace Manning.

“It’s good to have depth,” Kattan said. “It’s a good group of kids. A seasoned club that has kept on working. They’ve done a nice job so far this season.”

Mt. Lebanon embarks on PIAA tournament play on June 4. The Blue Devils take on the District 10 champion in the first round of competition. The state championships will be held at 2:30 p.m. June 15 at Panzer Stadium on the Penn State University campus.

BP left 11 runners on base. The Black Hawks managed seven hits, two more than the Warriors. In addition to a pair of two-baggers by Walsh. Ryan Petras, Stanhoff, Noah Lejeune, Dylan Paul and Santino Diulus collected base hits. Paul and cousins Mike and Jack Bruckner each were hit by pitches while Diulus and Petras walked.

“We have a lot of respect for Penn-Trafford. That’s a great team and they hit the ball well. When you have more hits and lose that means the other team was more productive with the at bats when they needed to come through in scoring position.”

Aside from the fourth frame, Bethel Park pitchers silenced the Warriors. Diulus started the game and fanned nine batters. Walsh had six strikeouts over the final three innings. He walked the lead-off hitter in the top of the seventh but struck out the side.

“My guys put together a good effort but fell short to a very good team, a team that was the best team in 5A all season long,” Zehnder said. “No doubt about it, Penn-Trafford was the better team.

“I am proud of my guys though. They are down on themselves now but they will get better and they know they are not done yet.”

The Blue Devils, especially Halter, rose to occasion in the district finals. Despite breaking his stick, Halter racked up six goals and collected three assists to lead the attack.

Noting he borrowed equipment from assistant coach and former standout Connor Brumfield, Halter said, “It’s magic.”

Ermer begged to differ. The senior attack, despite an injury-riddled season, is a Division I performer, already committed to Loyala in Maryland.

“The kid is lights out,” Ermer said. “Miles is very difficult to manage for the other teams. He’s a smart player. Crafty around the net. He’s an absolute pleasure to coach.”

The entire line-up and then some have been prolific producers for the Blue Devils much to Ermer’s delight. He noted how at the end of the

regular season the team takes a vote for offensive MVP, defensive MVP, unsung hero and team MVP.

“Eleven guys got votes for team MVP. That’s more than on the field,” he noted. “Five guys got seven to eight votes. So we didn’t have an MVP. It has been a total team effort and the guys voting that way demonstrates that.

“It’s an amazingly tight-knit group that cares about each other. That factor can take a team a long way.” It took a total defensive

effort to contain the Tigers. They had seven man-up opportunities in the contest but converted on zero chances.

Meanwhile, Lebo cashed in on 4 of 6 such situations.

“We put in a few new wrinkles there and that caught them off guard,” Ermer said.

“Basically though it’s the boys being unselfish, sharing the ball and moving it quickly. The whole thing about manup is you have to step in and move it until someone gets open. Our guys executed the game plan.”

In addition to Halter, Sullivan Kish (2), Fred Lasota (2), Jack Estabrook (2), Joey Hetz, Luke Prezioso and Keegan Green contributed to the goal scoring. Hetz and Prezioso each take on two assists. Kish and Lasota had one each.

Brody Lockwich collected 10 saves in goal while Kish and Green led in ground balls.

Ty Pirain, Aidan Carlstrom, Connor Young and Aden Ritchey were also credited with ground balls.Ben McAuley controlled 13 face-offs.

For the Blue Devils, the WPIAL was the sixth in school history and second in a row. Lebo won the 2023 crown with a 10-8 win against Shady Side Academy.

“Experience helped,” Halter said. “We had a lot of players returning from last year so that was a huge deal.”

“Maturity of the guys, 100 percent, played a key role,” Ermer agreed. “We’ve been here. We made some championship mistakes but we made up for them. Like turning around after a turnover and scoring a goal.”

A vibrant scene

Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival returns

The Pittsburgh region is gearing up again for its popular and much anticipated Three Rivers Arts Festival, a production of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. From May 31 to June 9, the cultural district will come alive with 10 days of vibrant art, dynamic performances and engaging music designed to appeal to a wide range of visitors. This is the 65th year of the fun-filled festival that features artists from around the region with performances on multiple stages. “We’re thrilled to welcome visitors back to Pittsburgh’s Cultural District with an updated layout for this year’s festival,” said Sarah Aziz, Interim President of Programming and Manager of DEAI Initiatives for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. According to Aziz, the updated layout expands the audience viewing area for featured concerts and incorporates one of the city’s iconic Three Sisters Bridges. Music lovers can grab a few friends and head to the Dollar Bank Main Stage at the intersection of Fort Duquesne Boulevard and 9th Street to enjoy free concerts by some of their favorite artists. The adjacent Rachel Carson Bridge (9th Street) will feature the Green Mountain Energy Stage presenting even more performances.

Highlights

A festival favorite returns this year with the juried artist’s market and features more than 300 regional creatives.

“Some artists will be in attendance for the first five days, others will show during the last five days, and some will show on weekends only,” said Aziz, explaining how guests are likely to see something different each time they visit. Animal lovers will be in their element when they visit this year’s Juried Visual Art Exhibition titled Furry Friends which will appear at the SPACE Gallery at 812 Liberty Ave. and celebrates the ways in which animals enrich our lives.

During the second weekend, visitors will be amazed and intrigued by a circus show performance hailing from Canada. Cirque Kikasse presents

SANTE. “It’s physical theater where they bring a food truck and do acts on top and around it,” said Aziz. Hijinks will include arranging furniture into a balancing tower 30 feet off the ground while playfully and inefficiently cleaning the truck and trampoline and causing the popcorn machine to overflow.

Cirque Kikasse runs from noon to 1 p.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. in the Giant Eagle Foundation backyard at Eighth and Penn during the festival’s final two days.

The Backyard Stage and Green Mountain Energy Stage performances feature headliners Pokey LaFarge, Los Lonely Boys, Martha Redbone, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Nicole Zuraitis, Ozomatli, the Sugarhill Gang and the Furious Five, Ben Folds and others.

This year visitors will also have the opportunity to par-

ticipate in a community project for creative reuse with materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill. “It will be a three-dimensional, 10-foottall tree sculpture, which may end up in a local library as a little reading nook,” said Aziz.

A Sudden Gust of Wind

Art can be anywhere and those who look up may see a series of stranded kites, caught in the branches of trees around the area. Local artists Lenka Clayton and Philip Andrew Lewis are responsible for the commissioned public art project which features 200 brightly colored aluminum kites installed in the branches of more than 90 trees.

“We’ve all seen kites caught in trees and it’s both sad and joyful at the same time,” said

Clayton. The couple worked on a similar project that they named 29 Tragedies, which appeared in a sculpture park in Missouri. “We loved the ambiguity and the questions that it posed,” Clayton said, adding that they then approached Anastasia James, Director of Galleries and Public Art at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and discussed populating a large area of downtown Pittsburgh with the work. “One of the things about kites stuck in a tree is that it’s often tied to people’s childhood memories, so there’s nostalgia, wonder and excitement the first time you fly a kite when you’re a kid,” said Lewis.

The installation is now complete and viewable to residents, but for those traveling to the region, it will be a fun reveal. The kites will remain in the trees so that visitors will be able to see how the installation changes over the seasons. “We’re so excited to have the opportunity to do this in our own hometown,” said Clayton.

In keeping with the kite theme, the festival will allow families to fly their own kites as part of the festival. Community Flying Days will be held on June 9 and kites will be distributed free of charge to attendees.

These are just a few of the interactive and interesting activities planned for the festival, which aims to delight and inspire visitors of all ages. Learn more by visiting the website at www.trustarts.org/ TRAF.

History Center launches digital archive documenting local effort to rescue Jews during Holocaust

The Rauh Jewish History Program and Archives at the Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh has launched a new digital archive featuring more than 500 letters from the papers of Congressman Henry Ellenbogen that documents his efforts to help Jews escape Europe during the Holocaust.

Ellenbogen represented the Pittsburgh area in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1932 to 1938, and served on the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas from 1938 until his mandated retirement in 1977. He was born in Vienna in 1900 and came to Pittsburgh in 1921. As a result of his prominence in the late 1930s and early 1940s, Ellenbogen received correspondence

from many Jewish people who were trying to escape from Central Europe during the early years of Nazi rule. The American government required anyone immigrating to the U.S. during those years to get an affidavit from an American citizen. The new digital collection documents this process in detail, showing the persistence required for anyone escaping Europe. Founded in 1988, the Rauh Jewish History Program and Archives, part of the Detre Library and Archives at Heinz History Center, collects, preserves and makes accessible the documentary history of Jews and the Jewish community in Western Pennsylvania. More information is available at heinzhistorycenter. org.
