It’s the season of resolutions. I’ve always been pretty against resolutions myself, and revisiting columns from years past around this time of year, I’ve opined on why plenty: I much prefer to focus on long-term, achievable intentions no matter what time of year it is.

Or, I at least attempt to do so. My success varies.

I’ve seen many adopting the practice of selecting a word for the coming year instead of picking a habit to take on or drop, which I am a fan of. I’ve picked a word that is very personal to me for 2024: choice. I want to choose to show up for my life in ways I couldn’t in 2023.

There are generators and lists online with inspiration for words of the year. Blog posts, YouTube videos, Pinterest boards and more provide suggestions. If you’re interested in a word of the year, you’ve likely already got yours picked out.

We’re approaching the abandonment period if you opted for a traditional resolution instead. One poll cites that over a quarter of Americans make resolutions. A Forbes contributor chatted with researcher Dr. Michelle Rozen about her work on the 6% of people who stick with their resolutions. On average, 94% of us have moved on from our New Year’s proclamations by the end of February.

The second Friday in January, too, has colloquially been deemed Quitter’s Day. Progress, not perfection. Any incremental movement towards what you want, no matter the size, is much better than staying the same. We only get what we want if we show up, yes, but showing up looks different depending on our circumstances. The ebb and flow of the daily grind gets us down. We fall into old habits, beat ourselves up and then give up. Kindness and curiosity, in my experience, lead to more lasting results than rigid resolutions with no wiggle room for life and all it throws at us. That’s my two cents when it comes to resolutions, for what it’s worth.

Of course, even though I won’t call it a resolution, I got back on my stationary bike beginning in January. I signed up for an online fitness challenge. My coworkers and I are doing a group wellness challenge, trying to curb our mindless snacking in the middle of the workday. Despite using a different framework, I’m doing many things other people are trying to do, too.

I’m calling it a return to myself after some backsliding last year. Hey, whatever works, right?

Maybe you’re like me, and you’re getting back on the saddle, literally in my case. The transition from 2023 to 2024 may mean nothing to you and your sense of self. Whatever your flavor of approaching the rest of this year, I wish you well in your endeavors, whether they be resolutions or not.

This is our health and wellness edition, and we have plenty on the topic within. Rick Shrum interviewed Dr. Mark Hospodar about multiple sclerosis and, for another story, talked with Bombash Botanical Skincare Co. owner Tim Bombash. Our cover story features the Mt. Lebanon Cycling and Caffeine Club, meeting on weekend days at Mt. Lebanon Coffee Tree Roasters at 7 a.m., no matter the weather since 1988.

Mt. Lebanon Cycling and Caffeine Club COULD BE THE JOLT YOUR WEEKEND NEEDS

If you love coffee and cycling, the Mt. Lebanon Cycling and Caffeine Club could be a good fit for you.

The group doesn’t keep track of members, but there are about 20 active riders and over 200 on their email list.

The group has been bicycling the roads and trails of Pittsburgh and beyond since 1988.

“We have people who come in from out of town that have been riding with us for over 20 years,” said Bodnar. “They just know when they are in town to visit family, if they show up to the coffee shop for a 7 a.m. ride, we will be there.”

“We always welcome new members who enjoy active road cycling and, of course, a lot of coffee,” said Dave Bodnar, a founding member of the group.

Bodnar said the group is very informal, meaning no meetings, officers or dues.

“Just show up and ride,” said Bodnar. “We are very punctual. Some people come early, some come one minute to 7 a.m. and some people have to catch up to us because they are late.”

The rides start at the Mt. Lebanon Coffee Tree Roasters, located at 151 Bakery Square, every Saturday and Sunday morning promptly at 7 a.m., rain or shine. They also stop at one of the coffee shops downtown while on the ride to have a beverage mid-ride.

“I have been with the club since 2002,” said Jeffrey Ramaley. “I joined the club to ride with other cyclists. I enjoy the exercise, the friends I have made and being outdoors. Saturday is my favorite day to ride. We climb Mt. Washington and see the sunrise, cycle through city neighborhoods and enjoy a coffee stop at places like Espresso A Mano in Lawrenceville or La Prima Espresso Company in the Strip District.”

Bodnar said that sometimes the group splits up and goes to both coffee shops so as not to overwhelm one shop with all the riders at once.

And some days, they don’t stop for coffee at all if the riders have a tight schedule that day.

Chadi Hage is a physician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and an avid rider with the club.

“I moved to Pittsburgh from Indiana in July 2022 and met the MtLCCC group on my first weekend in Pittsburgh at a coffee shop in Lawrenceville,” said Hage. “I was having morning coffee with my wife and saw this group of cyclists stop by to have a quick coffee. I approached them, and they were very nice and invited me to join them. One rider suggested I take a shot of his jersey and go to the website, so I did. I watched the video and loved it. I emailed David, and he gave me the instructions on where and what time. Sure enough, I was on the ride with them the following Saturday.”

Hage said the group immediately welcomed him and made him feel like he was a member right away.

In Indiana, the roads are flat and straight in contrast to Pittsburgh’s windy, hilly roads, which Hage fell in love with.

Safety is very important to the group, and everyone looks out for each other on the rides. They also have some rules the riders need to follow to keep everyone safe.

Those rules are:

The Saturday ride is about three hours long.

• All riders are expected to wear helmets during the group rides.

“Every Saturday, we leave the Mt. Lebanon Coffee Tree at 7 a.m. sharp to ride into Pittsburgh for the ‘Zoo ride’ with a stop in the Strip District for coffee,” said Bodnar. “This is a social ride that will regroup at the top of hills.”

• The Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. rides leave at exactly 7 a.m.

Bodnar said that riders are expected to have a fitness level to average 15 mph. He said a side group often peels off after the stadium for a more spirited extension to Observatory Hill. The short route of the ride is 30 miles and 2,000 feet. The longer route adds an extension, increasing the ride to 42 miles and 2,600 feet.

The Sunday ride takes about 2-and-a-half to 4 hours, depending on which route the riders follow. The ride leaves from Mt. Lebanon, out to Cecil and Midway, with options to return or extend on a longer route.

“Every Sunday, we leave the Mt. Lebanon Coffee Tree at 7 a.m. sharp to ride out west into Washington County towards Cecil and Midway,” said Bodnar. “The group typically breaks off at Midway for those returning home and those riding longer. This is a more spirited group ride that averages 18 mph and will not necessarily regroup on hills.”

The short route is around 40 miles and 2,600 feet, and the longer ride after Midway usually extends to around 50 miles.

Most riders ride both days, but some only come on one of the days.

Weather is obviously a factor as to how many participate. Their number of people varies dramatically from day to day and weekend to weekend, depending on the season. The smallest number of riders they will have is one or two if the weather is particularly cold or wet. Sometimes, they will have 15-20 riders.

• All riders are expected to obey traffic laws.

• Because of the early hour and low light, all riders are expected to have a bright front white light and bright rear red light on their bikes to increase individual and group visibility.

• There is no follow car or neutral support. You are expected to have your bike in good working condition before you arrive and to have the tools and skills to change your own flat.

• All riders are expected to dress appropriately for the weather.

Another suggestion Bodnar gives to new riders is to have cleats and clipless pedals.

“It is the combination of a pedal and cleat on your shoe that locks the shoe into the pedal,” said Bodnar. “It does two things. It aligns your foot properly and keeps it from falling off the pedal, but it also allows you to pedal on the upstroke. When you ride a bike, you usually only have power when you are pushing down, but if you are connected to the pedal and latched onto it, you can pedal both ways.”

Though falling might be a concern since riders are clipped into the pedal, Bodnar said new riders that are clipped in will fall and usually at the most embarrassing possible times, but eventually, they will learn how to unclip easily, and all will be well.

They try to explain how to ride in a group to riders not used to riding with others. They typically ride two by two so they can chat with the person beside them, but if they are riding and there is a car behind them,

someone will yell out “car back,” and it is an instruction for everyone to get in single file and far to the right so the car can pass.

“That is one thing that is nice about the city ride on Saturday,” said Bodnar. “It really hones your driving skills in traffic. We ride right into the city, and there are a lot of cars.”

He said it also helps riders be more sensitive to cyclists when driving their own cars.

“I ride with the group every weekend when I am not on call or out of town,” said Hage. “They are very experienced and safe riders. Their goal is to ride, have fun as a group and watch out for each other. I am always very impressed by how much they take care of each other on these rides.

I feel like they are personally responsible for each other’s safety. Despite their varying levels of fitness, oftentimes, they wait at the hilltop and sometimes even ride back to ensure whoever is behind is okay and able to rejoin the group. It is everyone’s responsibility that every rider makes it back safely after the ride.”

Hage said they are very consistent, respectful and skilled riders, which is very important to the safety of these rides.

“I have been a road cyclist for 15-plus years and have ridden with groups all over the U.S. and abroad,” said Hage. “I can safely say the MtLCCC is one of the most fun groups to ride with. Funny enough, I am Lebanese American, so that was extra special for me.”

The group was formed in 1988 after Bodnar and his friend decided cycling was a better option for them than running.

“I started running in 1976 with a buddy of mine, Dan Carroll,” said Bodnar. “We ran for 10-12 years. Coincidently, he was an attorney who was deposing an orthopedic surgeon who told him he was going to be replacing his knees before too long. That scared him, and it scared me too. So, we dug out bicycles and decided to bicycle instead. We have been riding ever since.”

They started biking together, and just by word of mouth, the group grew over the years.

“My wife, Mona, worked with Dave Bodnar at Mt. Lebanon School District,” said John Rice, a member of the MtLCCC. “I met Dave when she threw a retirement party for him around 2004. Dave invited me to ride with the group and was gracious enough to wait for me on a few hills because I wasn’t as fit as the other riders and was riding a much heavier bike.”

Rice said another rider in the group, Tony Delitto, offered him one of his road bikes to try out on the next ride. He then bought the bike from Tony and never looked back.

“Those two guys literally changed my life,” said Rice. “Rides with the club are great for a number of reasons. Group rides are great motivators to get me out of the house and ride. I had previously not ridden when the temps dropped below 60 degrees but was drawn into a crowd that rode year-round. I’ve made a number of friends over the years that I enjoy riding with. It’s great exercise with a social component.”

Though the group’s motto is “Mostly old guys in tight pants,” women and younger men are more than welcome to ride with the group.

“My daughter rides with us occasionally,” said Bodnar. “Although she typically rides trails later in the day. We have young ladies that do ride, but it is mostly guys. There are just not that many women road cyclists in Pittsburgh. There are just not that many female regular riders.”

The age range that attends the rides is between 20 and 70.

“The regular riders are, for the most part, in their 50s and 60s,” said Bodnar. “The one nice thing about cycling is that as long as you are in shape, it’s kind of a leveling experience. It’s not like running, where someone can just kill you if you are running with a youngster. Cycling is a lot more civilized. We wait at the top of hills for some people if we need to.”

The group is also involved in fundraising with the Bike MS 150 event, a two-day event sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, raising over $100,000 since 2000. MtLCCC participates in other cycling-related fundraisers and has traveled to the roads of Italy, Colorado and the backroads of Pennsylvania for cycling trips.

“The last trip we did, it was about 10 of us who traveled to Italy,” said Bodnar. “My daughter was working for a bicycle hotel in Bellagio on Lake Como, and she organized the trip, and we rode for two weeks. It was spectacular.”

Another thing Bodnar suggested that can help riders tackle the hilly roads of Pittsburg is riding an e-bike.

“Right now, only about three of four of us have e-bikes,” said Bodnar.

“Mostly, it is people who are in their 70s. When you turn 70, you get a little addendum on your birth certificate that says you can do anything you want. The e-bike also keeps my cardiologist happy because I have some heart issues, and it allows me to continue to ride.”

Bombash Botanical Skincare Co. concentrating on growth in 2024

Tim Bombash says he is cleaning up — which is appropriate for a man who is awash in soap.

“I’m making soap in the garage and have a garage full of it,” said Bombash, sole owner of Bombash Botanical Skincare Co. in Peters Township. “I should pinch myself. Things are going really well and get better every year. I look to increase manufacturing and maybe have a few more storefronts.”

Bombash has been in business at 628 E. McMurray Road for nearly nine years, selling soaps, bath bombs, bath powders, scrubs, body washes, moisturizers, CBD products and various other items. The shop also provides eye treatments and care for lips and nails and sells candles for weddings.

Bombash Botanical says on its website: “We use only the finest quality botanical ingredients that are naturally rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to nourish your skin from the inside out.”

The store, he said, has 10 to 12 employees, with “more around the holidays.”

The owner is pleased that he and his shop are on a roll, which isn’t related to the fact that he lives in Peters and “I often ride my skateboard on (the Montour) Trail to the store.”

Bombash Botanical relies on another mode of transportation, which has proven to be fortuitous.

“I also do a lot of business from a truck,” Tim said. The store makes deliveries and participates in festivals and other events, including birthday parties for kids. “We teach a kid how to make six bath bombs,” the owner said, laughing.

Bombash, who grew up in the Eighty Four neighborhood in North Strabane Township, said, “There are a bunch of rea- Bombash Botanical is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday sons that I got into this.” He said he went “full monty” on through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. “It’s a very hands-on business,” said Bombash, who has renovated the showroom and is formulating plans to expand.

“We’re concentrating this year on growth. We’ll see what the future brings here.”

He declined to elaborate on what that growth may entail as he mulls over ideas but did say, “We do get a lot of orders from the North Hills and from online customers.”

Dr. Mark Hospodar on MS treatments, disease evolution and tips for patients

Multiple sclerosis, by definition from the Mayo Clinic, is “a disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering of nerves … resulting in nerve damage that disrupts communication” between the brain and the rest of the body.

It is a complex disease, to be sure, one that causes many and various symptoms, including pain, bladder issues, eye problems, weakness, diminished coordination, fatigue and other issues.

“Almost everyone has fatigue,” said Mark Hospodar, MD, a neurology specialist with St. Clair Medical Group. “But each patient has a particular set of problems, and some are more affected than others. It’s like fingerprints. No two patients have the same constellation of problems.”

Yet it is a disease with which a patient can live a long, active and healthy life — provided they take modern medications and receive proper care and support.

It is not a high-profile illness, although several entertainment figures have been stricken with it. They include Teri Garr, Christina Applegate, the late Richard Pryor, Julia Roberts, Montel Williams, Selma Blair, Annette Funicello and Jamie-Lynn Sigler.

Hospodar says multiple sclerosis has some unusual tendencies. It is the leading cause of disability in young people, affects women more than men by a 3:1 ratio and is more common in countries located 40 to 60% latitude north and south.

“We have to be careful with pregnant women,” Hospodar said, “but as soon as we deliver, we get them on medications. One worries about the unborn child, but we haven’t seen any problems with these meds.”

A McDonald native and Fort Cherry alum, Hospodar has specialized in treating MS patients for 35 years. He said St. Clair Health serves about 400 people with multiple sclerosis.

For decades, treating MS was a formidable quandary for medical personnel.

“When I started, there was nothing (medicinal-wise),” Hospodar said. “Before ‘91, we only used steroids, which reduced inflammation and the length of (MS) episodes a patient would have. But they did not really change the disease process. The same damage was being done, and the damage remained.”

He said medications introduced in the early ‘90s slowed the process some.

“We went from one or two patient exacerbations a year to one every 10 years. The medications we have now are much better.”

Meds produced in more recent years, called disease-modifying treatments, “changed the natural history of the disease.”

Because of insurance limitations, Hospodar said, “We have meds in this country, but not all are available.”

He advises patients, and would-be patients, to be patient — and vigilant — with treatment or testing for multiple sclerosis. Trust the science.

“People shouldn’t blow off a diagnosis. They should get everything looked at and get treated. What we get is, ‘I had something three years ago but got better and didn’t go to a doctor.’ If you get people on medication early today, they will be less debilitated. They’ll be a lot happier 20 years from today.

“If (this disease) is not treated, a patient will age three times as fast. The brain atrophy is three times faster without treatment.”

He lamented the mindset some Americans displayed in the early years of the COVID-19 pandemic when they shied away from a vaccine that ultimately saved numerous lives. A number still adhere to that mindset.

“Because it is a variable disease, there is a high rate of ‘I don’t want you to tell me what to do in America.’ But if you get treated, we can slow it down tremendously in 85 to 90% of the people.”

Another challenge in the MS battle, according to Hospodar, is a nationwide shortage of neurologists, a figure he set at about 15,000.

The medical profession has been aware of MS since the mid-1860s when French neurologist John-Martin Charcot gave the disease an identity: sclerose en plaque. But for more than a century, treating it was largely a mystery.

Strides, fortunately, have been made over the past three decades-plus, yet the race still has a way to go.

NEW JAB LOCATION AND NAME REINFORCE COMMITMENT TO CUSTOM AND EXCLUSIVE JEWELRY

BY JILL THURSTON JAB Jewelry Works has a new home on McMurray Road in Bethel Park in a space where raw meets refined, and an updated name that captures their artistry and skill.

“It’s just one word, but it says a lot,” said Joseph A. Bonasso of the company that bears his initials.

Formerly, the name was JAB Jewelry Designs. “’Designs’ pigeon-holed us,” Bonasso said.

“People didn’t know if we carried jewelry.” JAB not only creates custom-designed jewelry but carries exclusive and partner lines at varying price points, including renowned jewelry designer Paula Crevoshay. Her pieces have been displayed at major museums and are only available at JAB in this area.

The beauty of the new setting only enhances the pieces on display.

Following an 18-month renovation after purchasing the building from Hallmor Inc., a metal fabricating shop that operated on the site for more than 30 years, JAB held its grand opening in December. The new look retained the industrial elements of the building, including a crane prominently featured in the showroom. The crane rails remain throughout the building, incorporated as part of the industrial decor, along with the cement flooring and exposed ductwork that contrast with the brightly lit jewelry cases filled with sparkle and precious metals. Local architectural firm Kulak-George provided the design options for the front of the building, including deep brown siding and rusted corten steel panels on black brick for an elegant, natural look with a rippling pond at the entrance.

Pictures from the Hallmor machine shop days are displayed above the beverage counter in the showroom, and the former owner has even stopped in to see the building. “I think people appreciate that we renovated the building instead of tearing it down,” said Bonasso, gauging from the feedback he’s received. The property was originally zoned as residential, he said, but the former owners were grandfathered in and permitted to continue industrial metal fabrication work. JAB was permitted to keep the zoning status by renovating, he said.

The building remains a “maker space.”

“We are makers,” said Bonasso. “One of our slogans is ‘We make small things to celebrate big things.’ And we wanted to keep the industrial feel.”

“It’s an incredible space, a gorgeous and comfortable work environment, not just for us as employees, but for our customers,” said Jim Reilly, gemologist and store manager. The former location on Route 19 in McMurray was a busier road; however, “the benefit of being here and being a little off the beaten path is that we are a destination store. If someone comes through the door, we generally know they are looking for something in particular,” said Reilly.

The additional floor space allows for two private consultation rooms, a conference room, a private office and workspace for Bonasso, a kitchen area and a lounge area coming soon in the basement. The industrial look is consistent throughout the building.

Almost a home away from home, all of the six Bonasso family members work for the business. Bonasso’s wife Karen works in accounting, and sons Joe, Ben and Luke have joined the family business full-time. Bonasso’s daughter Lily works part-time handling social media and marketing.

Since his own high school days at Upper St. Clair, Bonasso has been on a steady track, building what today is a successful family business. He took all the electives offered in high school that had to do with jewelry making. His knack led to an oppor-

tunity with a jeweler in the Clark Building downtown doing repair work; then, he gained a couple of his own accounts before opening his own shop.

There was never a plan B for him, he said. He’s taken advantage of the opportunities that have come along and reinvested in his business over the years, purchasing equipment and embracing the changing technology in the industry, including computer-aided design.

“That’s all in the last ten years, and it’s really changed our industry. We used to do a lot of repair work for other jewelers, and we stopped doing that about three years ago,” he said.

JAB’s specialty is designing jewelry. It always has been. However, with the upgrades in technology, that volume has increased from 20 percent to 80 percent. Early on, they were hand carving the wax molds, and today, design happens in CAD, and the prototype is sent to a 3D printer.

“We work through the design process with a person, then show 3D renderings and even a video of what a ring would look like before we make it. Once approved, we 3D print a small model in plastic so that they can physically see what it will look like, and from there, we go into manufacturing. It’s a several-step process, so there are no surprises. The only surprise is that it looks nicer than the pictures,” Bonasso said.

“Because we embrace a lot of the technology, we are able to design remotely. COVID showed everybody how to work remotely and, so when COVID hit, our CAD people didn’t miss much work. We set ourselves up to be able to do that.”

With cameras and live streaming, JAB can design like the customer is sitting across the desk.

Bonasso believes that’s part of the future for JAB, expanding outside of the local area through working remotely.

Bridal and redesign are large portions of his business. “Everyone wants something unique,” said Bonasso. JAB redesigns pieces, too. “We incorporate the sentiment into the piece we are creating. We will use their materials, the stones, the gold they may have and fashion something they can wear rather than it sitting in a drawer,” he said.

Gemologist and store manager Jim Reilly likes to put it this way, “We specialize in oneof-a-kind, one-at-a-time pieces. And we can transform an existing piece that you have into something you will cherish and wear, or we will take something that someone else has had and reconfigure it.”

“We have a very talented team of jewelers and designers, and we can pretty much do anything as it’s related to jewelry,” Reilly said.
