Right about now, many people are abandoning their resolutions set with eager optimism in early 2024. I’ve always been pretty against resolutions myself, and revisiting columns from years past around this time of year, I’ve opined on why plenty: I much prefer to focus on longterm, achievable intentions no matter what time of year it is. Or, I at least attempt to do so. My success varies.

I’ve seen many adopting the practice of selecting a word for the coming year instead of picking a habit to take on or drop, which I am a fan of. I’ve picked a word that is very personal to me for 2024: choice. I want to choose to show up for my life in ways I couldn’t in 2023.

There are generators and lists online with inspiration for words of the year. Blog posts, YouTube videos, Pinterest boards and more provide suggestions. If you’re interested in a word of the year, you’ve likely already got yours picked out.

We’re approaching the abandonment period if you opted for a traditional resolution instead. One poll cites that over a quarter of Americans make resolutions. A Forbes contributor chatted with researcher Dr. Michelle Rozen about her work on the 6% of people who stick with their resolutions. On average, 94% of us have moved on from our New Year’s proclamations by the end of February. The second Friday in January, too, has colloquially been deemed Quitter’s Day.

Progress, not perfection. Any incremental movement towards what you want, no matter the size, is much better than staying the same. We only get what we want if we show up, yes, but showing up looks different depending on our circumstances. The ebb and flow of the daily grind gets us down. We fall into old habits, beat ourselves up and then give up. Kindness and curiosity, in my experience, lead to more lasting results than rigid resolutions with no wiggle room for life and all it throws at us. That’s my two cents when it comes to resolutions, for what it’s worth.

Of course, even though I won’t call it a resolution, I got back on my stationary bike beginning in January. I signed up for an online fitness challenge. My coworkers and I are doing a group wellness challenge, trying to curb our mindless snacking in the middle of the workday. Despite using a different framework, I’m doing many things other people are trying to do, too. I’m calling it a return to myself after some backsliding last year.

Hey, whatever works, right?

Maybe you’re like me, and you’re getting back on the saddle, literally in my case. The transition from 2023 to 2024 may mean nothing to you and your sense of self. Whatever your flavor of approaching the rest of this year, I wish you well in your endeavors, whether they be resolutions or not.

Couple saves historic Scenery Hill structure from demolition

By Dave Zuchowski All photos Dave Zuchowski/for the Observer-Reporter Last year, a handsome two-story, red brick building in Scenery Hill dating back to 1827 had a close call with the wrecking ball.

Age had caught up with the structure. Stones occasionally fell from the chimney and ended up on Route 40. The porch had decayed, the roof was in bad shape and there was litter and debris on the grounds.

The township tried to have the owner make the necessary repairs. When the owner failed to comply, the process that would eventually result in the structure’s demolition got underway.

“When I heard from a friend that the building was going to be condemned and demolished, I bought it just to save it,” said Brian Allen of Scenery Hill.

According to Allen, an assay conducted in the town concluded that Scenery Hill has 54 historic assets dating between the late 1700s and late 1800s. He also said there were, at one time, five taverns located in a one-mile 6 | LIVING IN WASHINGTON COUNTY | FEBRUARY 23, 2024

stretch of the National Road that runs through Scenery Hill. The Beck-Ringland Tavern, the historic building he bought in 2014, is one of them.

“Besides offering travelers four sleeping rooms, food and alcoholic beverages in the bar area and stables for their horses, the tavern was a social center where the residents came to vote and exchange news,” Allen said.

After Allen purchased the property, he, his wife, Kathy and their three sons, Garrett, 13, Elias, 15, and Liam, 16, helped repair and renovate the building. They removed the porch, took down the chimney, fixed the windows, repointed the brick and cleaned up the grounds.

Looking for something that could provide a source of income after retirement, Allen considered the options.

He noted the dynamic micro-brewery industry in Pennsylvania and the cluster of beer venues in the Pittsburgh area. With little knowledge of the brewing process, he and his wife, a chemist, taught themselves the tricks of the trade. Now, Scenery Hill Brewing is based out of their federal-style tavern.

From 2014 to 2019, things moved slowly but started to move in earnest in 2019 when the Allens wrote a business plan and then cut a loan in the spring of the following year. When COVID hit, the couple could not get construction help, so they worked to prepare the building themselves.

tavern could serve 10 of their beers on tap. The menu also listed a cider made from apples purchased from Browns Orchard in McDonald that finishes sweet but still comes in at 6 percent alcohol by volume.

“Because my wife is a chemist, we can use water chemistry to match water profiles from beer makers around the world,” Allen said.

The brewery helps support local businesses like grain and fruit growers and is also able to serve local products like wine from J&D Cellars of Eighty Four, whiskies by Liberty Pole and Red Pump Spirits of Washington, and Red Ribbon soda pop from Natrona Heights. It also has an arrangement whereby the tavern exchanges its cider for some of Rusty Gold Brewers of Canonsburg’s best beers.

While much of the tavern has the look and feel of the original 1827 building, a room at the back is reserved for artists and crafters who may want to display and sell their creations. takes the helm as Washington Wild Things’ parent company CEO

It was literally day one when the club announced its existence in November 2001 in the food court of what was then called the Franklin Mall in North Franklin Township.

While she has as much to do as any one person getting the Wild Things to the brink of the 2024 season of play in the Frontier League, she downplays her role and importance.

Blaine is a constant, a foundation and the matriarch. She has long been the face of the franchise.

She hasn’t delivered one hit, drove in a run, stole a base, threw a no-hitter or recorded a save, but she has been a home run.

Grand slam, in fact.

Now, she is the boss.

Blaine is now the chief executive officer of Sports Facility, LLC — the Washington Wild Things parent company. She is continuing her work in corporate partnerships along with overseeing other organization departments.

Owner Stuart Williams placed that designation on her recently when the organization re-aligned its front office.

Those series of moves reshaped the team’s front office.

While the Wild Things remain owned and operated by The Williams, Stuart and Francine, the look is slightly different.

Blaine is at the center of it all.

“I also think the contributions, beyond ownership of Stu and Francine Williams, is overlooked. They not only have grown this organization but have given countless young people like me an opportunity. It’s a credit to them.”

Other organizational moves included: • Kyle Dawson is now vice president of baseball operations of the club. He’ll continue his role as the “Voice of the Wild Things” as well. It will be his 10th season with the team.

Helping close to home: Canonsburg chiropractor provides free care to City Mission residents

By Michele Gillis Photos Courtesy of Dr. Christopher Carr Ten years ago, Dr. Christopher Carr, a chiropractor and owner of Pittsburgh Integrated Wellness in Canonsburg, wanted to give back but wasn’t sure which way to go.

At first, he was interested in doing mission work out of the country. When he was speaking with one of his mentors about it, the mentor suggested he look in his own backyard to see if he could find a way to serve there.

“I didn’t even know the Washington City Mission existed at that point,” said Carr. “I started looking around, and I said huh, it’s crazy that this place is less than 10 miles from my clinic. Homelessness has always been something I have been passionate about.”

Carr said that he went to talk with the directors of the mission several times about providing chiropractic care at the mission, and at first, they were hesitant because they weren’t sure what the core objective was.

“But after a few meetings, we started on a trial basis, and it was great,” said Carr. “It was well-received, and I kept on showing up.”

Carr has been serving pro-bono at the chiropractic clinic inside the Washington City Mission for 10 years.

Considering the physical stress homeless people’s bodies go through on a day-to-day basis, it is easy to see how having a place to go to get free pain relief in the form of chiropractic care would appeal to them.

“I have always wanted to see a chiropractor but never had the opportunity until coming to City Mission,” said Angela, a resident at the Washington City Mission. “Dr. Carr was made aware of this and made sure to answer any questions that I had and made sure I was comfortable throughout the process. I make it a point to see him every time he visits, and I have seen so much progress!”

Carr and a few other volunteer chiropractors provide drug-free pain relief for those who need it and who do not want or cannot go on pain medication for relief due to their circumstances.

“We have so many residents that are coming off of heroin or opioids but can’t take anything for their pain,” said Carr. “They need 20 | LIVING IN WASHINGTON COUNTY | FEBRUARY 23, 2024

something on the natural end of things, and that is where chiropractic care fits in. It is a drug-free modality that works on musculoskeletal-related pains.”

The relationships that Carr has built with the residents and the staff at the mission fill his cup each time he visits there. Some of the staff members at the mission were so impressed by his work that they went to see him at his Pittsburgh Integrated Wellness clinic to get work done.

“When I leave there, whatever I give, I get a hundred times back from just going there,” said Carr. “Whatever I have going on in my personal life is miniscule after I leave there. The females that come in that have been battered or bruised and get worked on, and their headaches are gone, or their neck or shoulder pain is much less. Or the veterans who have been in combat or have had chronic issues can get relief.”

Leah Deitrich, director of residential programs at the Washington City Missions, said that not only does Carr provide his chiropractic services for free, but each Christmas, he also holds a toy drive for the mission and then shows up with a vehicle full of toys for their Santa’s Workshop program.

“His heart for what we do extends beyond sharing the gifts that he has with chiropractic care,” said Dietrich. “He just has such a good heart for what we do and supporting those in need in the community, and that is an amazing thing to see.”

Carr is not there just to help with neck and back pain, he is there to help the residents function at a higher level.

“Pain affects people’s mental and emotional health. It is on their mind all day, every day. If we can decrease their physical pain, we can decrease their emotional pain as well,” said Carr. “That’s what makes this so unique is that this population, that some would say society has turned a blind eye towards, have access to these things that most wouldn’t think they have access to because they can’t afford or don’t have access to health insurance.”

When he first started, he was providing care in a little closet-like area with a fold-up table.

Carr handles consultations, examinations and treatments of patients from the residents at the mission and sometimes walk-ins to the mission.

“The adjustments are our primary form of therapy,” said Carr.

He then gives the patients stretching and strength exercises and other rehab recommendations to do while they are in the clinic or while they are in the shelter.

Carr now visits the clinic once a month, and other chiropractors come every two weeks to help the residents continue their care.

“A lot of our residents have chronic pain issues and have never had access to chiropractic care,” said Dietrich. “So, for them, it helps them to deal with problems that they didn’t necessarily know could be solved by chiropractic care.”

Through his relationships, Carr was able to secure more chiropractors to grow the practice to provide even more support, so there is a chiropractor at the mission almost every week to provide support.

“The frequency that he can provide here really helps people to maintain the relief that they feel from the treatment they get,” said Dietrich. “The residents love getting to see him. Whenever he comes, there is a line out the door. They are very excited to see him and to receive the care they get from him.”

Dietrich shared a story of a resident who suffered from severe back pain. After his treatment from Dr. Carr, he declared that he could stand taller and said that he could sleep better that night.

“To see that relationship continue was wonderful,” said Dietrich. “Whenever Dr. Carr first started, he would be first in line whenever Dr. Carr was there. Making that kind of difference for someone helps boost their confidence to help them stand tall and walk with no pain just gave him a new lease on life.”

Dietrich said that Dr. Carr also works with individuals to show them what they can do to maintain the relief that they feel. He would give them exercises to do in between visits to maintain the relief. She said empowering them in that way made such a difference by showing them that they could be a part of their treatment and that they could get better.

Carr has been the owner of Pittsburgh Integrated Wellness in Canonsburg for 17 years.

Since the Washington City Mission is a nonprofit, Carr said the two best donations that could be given are time and money.

Having clients leave her hair salon with a smile on their faces is Holly North’s ultimate goal.

After 23 years in the hair business, she has learned from the best and has now taken a leap of faith by opening her storefront, The Pittsburgh Hair Bar, in Canonsburg.

North held a ribbon cutting recently to celebrate the opening of the salon. About 30 people attended the opening, including Mayor David Rhome, EJ Kleckner, president of the Greater Canonsburg Chamber of Commerce and her family, clients and friends.

“My husband Ryan and my children, Lilliana and Myles, were there to help me cut the ribbon,” said North. “Ryan has been my backbone through all of this.”

They had hors d’oeuvres, champagne and little cookies with bobby pins and hair dryers for guests to enjoy after the ribbon cutting.

She chose the name The Pittsburgh Hair Bar so people would connect her salon to the local area when searching online for a salon to visit.

“I was batting around names with some friends, and we landed on The Hair Bar, but someone had that already, so I added Pittsburgh to create The Pittsburgh Hair Bar,” said North.

She said she focuses only on hair, no nails or skincare for now. The name of her business has been in use since October 2021. She created the LLC so she could work independently at Sola Salon in South Hills Village.

“I have tried many hair stylists since living in Canonsburg, and I am most fortunate that one day I tried the Geno Levi Salon and got assigned to Holly Lynn,” said Donna Klemans. “From that first appointment with her, I knew that Holly was the stylist for me. l used to get perms every few months, and after my appointment with Holly and her explanation of how my hair should be cut and texturized, I no longer need perms, thank goodness.”

Klemans said North knows what it takes to keep her hair healthy and is a kind, considerate, skilled stylist.

“I appreciate her professionalism and the quality of her work,” Klemans said. “If you need to adjust your appointment with her, she will do her best to accommodate your needs. I have followed her from leaving Geno’s to Sola and now to her having her shop in downtown Canonsburg. Her shop is neat and well-organized. She cares about her clients, and her prices are reasonable and affordable. She makes her appointments so that you do not have to wait between her other clients. I have gone to her so long now that she’s not only my hair stylist but a true friend who cares.”

In March 2023, she ran into another stylist, Jamie Stiles of Meraki Beauty Studio, who was on the verge of retiring from doing hair.

“This is where the turn-key situation happened and how The Pittsburgh Hair Bar came to Canonsburg,” said North.

Since the salon was all ready for her to move into, she opened in September 2023. The salon has four chairs, and she is actively hiring stylists.

“I want to bring good hair to Canonsburg,” said North.

“It is a family-friendly salon. Kids are welcome.”

Her salon offers custom haircuts, trendy hair colors and smoothing hair treatments.

North does not offer updos or extensions but would welcome a stylist who wants to provide those types of specialty hair services.

She said she has been quite busy since she opened.

“Overall, I am starting to see why I am looking to hire a stylist because I am getting slightly overwhelmed with the people that are calling in, and I need help with some of the overflow,” said North.

North said what she wants most is to have her customers leave feeling great and enjoy the creativity she can bring to the table.

“It’s an art in a different way that makes people feel good,” said North.

“That’s what I want people to feel when they leave here. I want them to say, ‘I got my hair done at the Pittsburgh Hair Bar.’” Karen Momyer has been a client of North’s for over a decade.

“I really trust her as my stylist,” said Momyer. “She always asks what I want and listens to what I say. Holly is fun to spend salon time with, and I always leave looking and feeling great.”

North said she credits her talent and success to her previous mentors.

“I would not be where I am today if I didn’t have those past hair mentors in my life,” said North. “I would also like to thank my parents, sister, and in-laws for helping with my children so I can go on this adventure.”

Greg Taranto, assistant to the superintendent for K-6 curriculum and instruction, emphasized the collective effort in this significant shift, stating, “This is another exciting programming investment that will benefit all our students. A special thanks to our CM curriculum committee members, K-6 science teachers and the K-6 pilot science teachers for the work put into making this happen!”

Canon-McMillan Middle School students recently made a significant impact at Borland Manor Elementary, bringing a unique STEM lesson to first graders. This venture, led by the middle school’s gifted students, was the highlight of their science, technology, engineering and mathematics lesson project developed from December to January.

The project started with the students selecting a children’s book as the basis for their lesson plan, demonstrating creativity and thoughtfulness in their approach. After months of preparation, they executed their plans at Borland Manor Elementary, creating an engaging and interactive STEM experience. During the lesson, the middle school students demonstrated how to use 3D pens to draw characters from the books. The session was a hit, with students from both schools thoroughly enjoying the learning process.

This initiative was supported by a district mini-grant won

by Pamela Silverblatt and Samantha Zalaznik at the end of 2023. The grant aimed to encourage young students’ interest in science and technology. It provided middle schoolers a platform to showcase their skills and encouraged them to mentor younger students, building a sense of community.

The students’ reflections on the day were telling, especially those from the middle schoolers. Laasya Kondapi expressed the joy of collaboration: “The purest gift you can give is making someone smile, and I feel like we did that today while working together.”

Nathan Laird enjoyed the teaching experience, saying, “Using 3D pens is so much more fun when you are teaching it.”

Noah Taylor emphasized the value of sharing, adding, “Things are better when you share them with others, and we had a great afternoon with the first-grade students!”

Sri Kondapi pointed out the importance of their role and said, “The younger kids are our next generation; we need to teach and inspire them.”

The visit by the Canon-McMillan Middle School students to Borland Manor Elementary was more than just a day’s activity. It was a step toward nurturing a future generation interested in STEM. This program’s success raises hopes for its continuation, reflecting the importance of mentorship, innovation and the shared joy of learning.
