MAKING MY OWN CHRISTMAS MAGIC THIS YEAR I know this time of year can either be the most wonderful or most difficult, depending on your life circumstances. This Christmas will be the first without my mother; she was my life’s magic maker.

She was the one keeping spirits bright all throughout my childhood and early adulthood. I’m trying to establish new traditions and take care of myself. If this season is hard for you, I’m thinking of you.

I’ve written a lot about grief since I lost both of my parents within six years, with a healthy dose of the COVID pandemic in between. Sadness has touched much of my 20s, but I try my hardest to stay resilient, optimistic and thankful, especially during this season.

So, in the midst of mourning my mother, I hope you will give me just a little bit of space to honor her and recount to you my thoughts on moving forward without the ones you love.

Grief and morning are like the ocean. At first, you’re out so far that the waves crash over you constantly.

You feel overwhelmed by their intensity. Breathing is challenging as another forceful wave knocks you back. You think, can I make it through this? Am I strong enough to go on? As time marches forward, you get closer and closer to the shore. The sandy beach is now in sight, but the waves keep coming. Now, they sneak up behind you when you’ve let your guard down, when you least expect it. They still overwhelm you with their power. Eventually, you crawl to the shore, spent and exhausted. The waves always come, but now you’re equipped to handle them. You have tools, and you can even, sometimes, see them coming. Others are with you on the beach to hold your hand or simply be with you, experiencing the sadness lapping at your toes.

I share this with you not because I don’t think you’ve experienced loss. I know we’ve been through some tough times. I’m sharing this so you feel less alone. Grief can be all-encompassing and isolating. If you’re like me and you’re missing the ones you love this season, there’s no making the hurt go away. You learn to live with and appreciate it because if you stop hurting, you stop remembering.

Thank you for reading my most vulnerable editor’s letter.

I’m wishing you and yours love and light in the coming days.

It’s another perfect morning for a fly-in.

The sky is brilliant blue, and the windsock hanging at the edge of the runway at Greene County Airport has nothing to report.

But I do.

It’s 9 a.m., and I’ve come to Asher’s at the Airport to meet Matt Harding from Eighty Four, owner of the new restaurant that takes its name from the biblical tribe of Asher, noted for its prosperity and good food.

The long-awaited eatery opened its doors on March 15 — happily, just in time to serve the Greene County Flying Club when it held its April 8 meeting. This was very good news for local fliers and the folks who love eating breakfast with a view, but even more so for regional private pilots who take to the sky for a 100-mile breakfast or taxi in for lunch on the way back from a business trip or family outing.

When a smoky electrical fire on March 24, 2021, damaged the county-owned airport’s main building, its popular Airport Restaurant, managed for 20 years by Kathy Kiger and her family, closed. But throughout the long months, as insurance was sorted out and the building was finally brought up to code and refurbished, the chamber stayed in contact with the EAA 402 Experimental Aircraft Club out of Newark, Ohio. Its many members had been regular breakfast fliers, and “We didn’t want to lose them. We kept them in the loop and let them know when we were open again.”

Longstreth’s perseverance paid off. On November 4, a fleet of EAA members would be arriving for their first 9 a.m. breakfast at Asher’s, she texted me. Could I stop by for some photos, maybe write a story?

Swassord honed her expertise by running the Eclectic Cafe through her church, serving weekly lunches to senior homes in and around Charleroi. She tells me Harding’s wife Melissa helped at the cafe doing desserts. When the Hardings hired her to cater a company event for 250 people, and it was a success, she was welcomed aboard the family’s new business venture.

Aviation themes are everywhere, from the restaurant’s logo to photos on the walls celebrating the airport’s 95-year history. Renaming the menu items that are carryovers of Airport Restaurant favorites is playful pilot-speak. The perennial Garbage Plate, “three egg scramble, sausage, ham, onion, peppers, home fries topped with cheese served with toast, is now the Bone Yard, that place in Arizona where airplanes go to die,” Loughman informs me with a grin.

“Biscuits with sausage and gravy” is just what it says it is, but after my first bite, I’m ready to rename it Smooth Landing – creamy, meaty and seasoned just right.

When I text Greene County Commissioner Mike Belding later, he admits that the classic corned beef and Swiss cheese on marbled rye, aka the Curtiss Reuben OX-5, is one of his favorites, “It’s named after the Curtiss OX -5 aircraft engine that powered mostly trainer-type aircraft such as the Curtiss JN-4 ‘Jenny’ during World War I.” Belding, a career pilot in the military, touted the big plusses of having a county airport to help the community “grow our own pilots’ program” in the January 2023 issue of the Business View Magazine.

In the article, Belding described the educational benefits of having flight simulators at Carmichaels High School that teach kids the basics, then the follow-up aviation summer camp that leads to the Greene County Airport for an orientation flight with the Young Eagles Program.

Now that Pittsburgh Soaring Association is using the airport, “Gliders give us diversity. You can solo a non-powered aircraft at age 14, then you can pilot a powered aircraft at 16, so that is a great way to get young people interested in aviation. We want them to find industries that are already moving here or stay to work remotely and live here. The Greene County Airport has the potential to be at the center of this revitalization.”

Junction Deli reopens with new name and menu LK Cafe at the Junction Deli opened in early November.

The reopening of the Junction Deli as LK Cafe at the Junction Deli on Nov. 11 was a smashing success.

Tolbert and Kaysee Lukacs and LaDana Maurin (Kaysee’s mom) are the new owners of LK Cafe at the Junction Deli and are excited to bring new and exciting menu items to the community.

The family-owned and operated business will also include their children and friends working in the cafe.

Kaysee feels that reopening a cafe in the Junction Deli location is God-ordained.

“God has prepared us to be able to bring in something into our community that everyone will enjoy,” said Kaysee.

“That is also why we decided to bring Penn State Creamery into the business; people really like it and will enjoy having ice cream from there. We are hoping that it is something that everyone wants and enjoys.”

Other local food vendors that will provide food for the cafe include bakery items from Valdiserri’s Bakery in North Belle Vernon, freshly baked bread from the Brown Bear Bread Cafe in Pittsburgh, Penn State Creamery Ice Cream from the Berkey Creamery in Penn State and coffee from Prestogeorge Coffee & Tea, Pittsburgh.

“We will be here as much as we need to,” said Maurin. “But we are hoping that we have such a great team coming in, and we hope they are efficient enough to run the cafe flawlessly.

This year’s parade expenses are underwritten by West Penn Power, a First Energy company, and the chamber is grateful for their past support. Large amounts of staffing, ranging from volunteers to police, are essential to ensure everything runs smoothly and safely. The chamber is so very thankful for all the support from many agencies, businesses, and volunteers, some who have been working the parade for numerous years and happily return each year. For over 30 years, Waynesburg University has videotaped the parade and volunteered to do so once again this year.

are never too old to feel the spirit and warmth of the holidays and reflect it to those around you. As we prepare for next year and closing for the holiday season, we wish nothing but good tidings, great memories and safe travels to each and every one of you.

As technology evolves, university students find new and exciting ways to cover the parade and share it with the community online. Through the coordination of the chamber, the borough and state police, Greene County Emergency Managemen and the County of Greene, we hope this tradition will continue for another 85 years.

As the winter months approach, we hope that the feeling of joy and celebration from gathering together is evident.

Nothing beats the smiles of those in our community, whether from seeing the Grand Marshalls lead the way down High Street, Santa welcoming Christmas to town at the end of the parade or seeing a long-lost face at our yearly banquet. You

Greene County Penn State Extension Master Gardener

Though they mainly originated from the mountainous rainforests of Brazil, holiday cacti can find a happy home in many Greene County abodes. These houseplants can live up to 100 years, being passed down from generation to generation. They can produce a wide range of bloom colors, including white, cream, peach, orange, red, lavender and purple.

They do not have true leaves, so photosynthesis occurs in their segmented green stems. Pinching back the stems when blooming is finished causes increased branching and greater bloom production the following year. Because of their pendulous stems, they make great hanging baskets but grow equally happily in a pot on a table or shelf.

There are three main types of holiday cacti: Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. They can be distinguished not only by the bloom time for which they are named but by the appearance of their stems and flowers. Thanksgiving Cacti have stem segments with saw-toothed, serrated edges, and their flowers have purplish-brown anthers (the pollen-producing protrusion from the throat of the flower). The stem segments of the Christmas cactus are more pear-shaped with scalloped edges, and their flowers are more drooping with yellow anthers. The stem segments of the Easter cactus are more rounded, with flowers being flat and star-shaped and held horizontally to the stem.

All holiday cacti enjoy growing in bright but filtered or indirect sunlight. This replicates the amount of sunlight they received growing in the tree limbs of the Brazilian rainforest where they primarily originated. They are considered short-day plants, meaning they require a seasonal shift toward shorter days and longer nights with at least 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness. Exposure to lamplight or streetlights at night can disrupt the budding process. They enjoy reasonable humidity levels, such as those common in our region. They like to grow in well-draining potting medium (roughly 60% soil and 40% perlite is good) in pots with drainage holes and saucers to collect excess water.

They like to have their soil evenly moist while blooming — but never water-logged — and to have their soil dry out between watering when not in bloom.

They bloom best when pot-bound. So, re-pot no more frequently than every three years or so or when the roots are growing out of the drainage holes. Over-watering is the most common problem and causes root rot as well as attracting other pests/diseases. Fertilize once a month with houseplant fertilizer at half-strength. Avoid drafty areas or areas with abrupt temperature changes.

Propagating is simple to do. Simply pinch off a branch 3 or 4 segments long and either root in water, with or without rooting solution, or directly place several pinched-off branches approximately one inch deep in a four- to 8-inch pot filled with potting medium. Water well and cover with a clear plastic bag secured to the pot with a rubber band, creating a mini-greenhouse. Remove the bag and water again when roots have developed three to 8 weeks later. These fairly undemanding and cheerful houseplants will reward your efforts with several weeks of blooms, again and again, for many years to come.
