I’ve written a lot about grief since I lost both of my parents within six years, with a healthy dose of the COVID pandemic in between. Sadness has touched much of my 20s, but I try my hardest to stay resilient, optimistic and thankful, especially during this season.

So, in the midst of mourning my mother, I hope you will give me just a little bit of space to honor her and recount to you my thoughts on moving forward without the ones you love.

Grief and morning are like the ocean. At first, you’re out so far that the waves crash over you constantly. You feel overwhelmed by their intensity. Breathing is challenging as another forceful wave knocks you back. You think, can I make it through this? Am I strong enough to go on? As time marches forward, you get closer and closer to the shore. The sandy beach is now in sight, but the waves keep coming.

Now, they sneak up behind you when you’ve let your guard down, when you least expect it. They still overwhelm you with their power. Eventually, you crawl to the shore, spent and exhausted. The waves always come, but now you’re equipped to handle them. You have tools, and you can even, sometimes, see them coming. Others are with you on the beach to hold your hand or simply be with you, experiencing the sadness lapping at your toes.

I share this with you not because I don’t think you’ve experienced loss. I know we’ve been through some tough times. I’m sharing this so you feel less alone. Grief can be all-encompassing and isolating. If you’re like me and you’re missing the ones you love this season, there’s no making the hurt go away. You learn to live with and appreciate it because if you stop hurting, you stop remembering.

Thank you for reading my most vulnerable editor’s letter.

Sansom expressed that her studio is very inclusive and open to everyone.

“If you have a limitation, we will work with you,” said Sansom. “Everybody needs empowerment and an opportunity to be present. We are trying to meet people where they are.”

Although yoga can be intimidating to some degree, Sansom said, she and her instructors ensure everyone feels comfortable and is offered options.

They are also going to provide a beginner’s series on Monday nights.

“I think downtown Washington needs this space because we are accessible, and we offer yoga and may introduce you to different parts of wellness you didn’t know you could adopt into your life pretty easily,” said Sansom.

Sansom previously owned two yoga studios, Indigo Yoga Loft, in 2019. But when COVID hit, she transitioned to online. In 2021, she started under the mentorship of a friend in Canonsburg who is an intuitive reiki master.

Indigo on Main has private rooms for coaching, reiki or meditation.

“I relocated there for yoga and started doing reiki,” said Sansom. “Then I started getting the bug again that I needed to be back in Washington.”

Sansom did a pop-up event in March at the space she is in now with a friend, and it created a fire in her to open a new studio.

“I took the lease in July and did a soft opening throughout the summer,” said Sansom.

Sansom said she chose the name of her new studios because indigo is the color of the sixth chakra.

“It is the color associated with intuition and insight,” said Sansom. “I have always loved the word and the color. It’s that deep blue, and it has always called to me. It is a beautiful color.”

Gretchen Munroe attends a weekly yoga class at Indigo on Main and says she loves everything about it.

“Jill is such an amazing person and yoga instructor,” said Munroe. “She has taught me so much since I started my yoga practice with her in February 2020. She is truly one of a kind! Jill is so helpful, inspirational, kind, caring and a master at teaching yoga and how to get through struggles in life with grace, as well as how to care for our mind, body and souls.”

Turning a family tradition into a thriving salsa business

Eddie Martinez became a salsa aficionado at an early age.

“My mom made salsa every Sunday when I was growing up and put it in a Tupperware container,” he said. “We had it with most of our meals, then she’d make a fresh batch the following Sunday.”

it for family members and friends. “One day, I made a double batch and took it to a neighbor’s house, and they loved it. I started to make a double batch every week, and it started to gain popularity in the neighborhood.” His culinary skills continued to expand, as did his entrepreneurial skills.

This was his mother’s version of the celebrated California salsa, which she prepared in the family’s Bakersfield home, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles. “It’s a small cow town of 500,000 people,” Eddie said, laughing. He started to prepare salsa himself, following up on his mother’s avocation. It evolved into a pastime that, years later and 2,421 miles from his roots, morphed into a vocation 2,421 miles to the east.

Don’t look for a bricks-and-mortar storefront, though. Martinez, who is operating a business for the first time, does not have one – yet. He sells his wares at about a half-dozen farmers markets in Washington County and the South Hills. They include the Main Street Farmers Market (Washington), Canonsburg, Mt. Lebanon, Upper St. Clair, Robinson Township (Allegheny County) and the Original Famers Market (Cecil Township).

Martinez owns Brochachos Salsa, which he operates from the Canonsburg home he shares with his two sons and one daughter. He and his family relocated there six years ago. Eddie became a minority business owner in 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic was establishing itself nationwide. Brochachos Salsa made the top three in the Latino-owned business category in the Observer-Reporter’s Best of the Best contest.

The name is derived from “brochacho,” a term for a friend or brother. His personal passion for salsa grew while preparing

“We also do light catering,” he said, “and we’re trying to expand our catering – weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, birthday parties. We want to see if it’s feasible to have brick and mortar.” Brochachos Salsa, Martinez added, is “really pushing fundraising opportunities within local communities.

“This is truly is a family business,” he said. “We’re not a large mega-corporation, but a true organic business, one that puts braces on my child, pays for my son’s lacrosse trip and musical theater classes. We’ve been blessed enough to serve in local communities in the South Hills and Washington County to support family.”

No, this is not a mega-corporation, but according to Martinez, it does post impressive numbers for a fairly new business.

“We ship to 17 states and eight different countries, most of them military related.”

Brochachos Salsa also collaborates with local retail outlets to sell its salsas. He added that its mild, smoked and hot varieties are displayed on shelves at 13 Giant Eagles, stretching from southwestern Pennsylvania to Indiana, and six Giant Eagle Market Districts.

Eddy Martinez is pleased with the trajectory the business has taken in 3 1/2 years, rising from humble beginnings in what had been unfamiliar surroundings for him. “We moved from the Los Angeles area and didn’t know what we were getting into. We didn’t know anybody here. We found Canonsburg to be a small-town community where you see kids running around. It’s been a blessing for us to come in and assimilate in a place like this.”

Canon-McMillan’s Big Mac Beanery is brewing success for students and staff Courtesy of Canon-McMillan School District Stepping into Canon-McMillan High School on a brisk Tuesday morning, one is greeted with an aroma that’s not the usual scent of textbooks and science labs. Instead, it’s the rich, inviting smell of coffee from the Big Mac Beanery, the school’s newest venture. Launched the week of Halloween, the coffee shop is open to all students and staff. It’s a real-world classroom on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7:45 to 9:20 a.m., where students with autism and those in the Life Skills program gain vocational experience by running the day-to-day operations.

The Big Mac Beanery is a non-profit initiative by the Canon-McMillan School District, crafted to give these students a unique hands-on learning experience. They learn the nuances of personal and environmental hygiene, master fine motor skills and engage in critical thinking to keep inventory checks. These experiences are priceless for students, preparing them for life beyond the school’s walls.

As for the products, the Big Mac Beanery is savvy about its offerings. The beverages meet the “Smart Snacks in School” standards, ensuring that taste does not come at the expense of nutrition. With the menu created and shared by classroom teachers, the coffee shop is a testament to collaboration, practical education and the pursuit of post-secondary readiness.

The convenience of having a coffee shop within the school is unmatched for the staff and student body. The Beanery offers a warm, social space to come together, discuss ideas or simply enjoy a quiet cup of coffee.
