SCIENTIFIC LITERACY This year the share of citizens who were unable to answer any of the questions correctly rose to 12%, while the portion who managed to answer all three questions correctly exceeded 30%. As occurred in previous years, the highest share of individuals who could not answer any of the questions posed was found among Italians over sixty years of age and in subjects with a low level of education, while among young people and university graduates the percentage of those who were able to answer all three questions exceeded 50% in the former and 60% in the latter case. EXPOSURE TO SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY THROUGH THE MEDIA In 2021 television was still the main media channel used to acquire scientific information. 77% of Italians declare that at least once a month they watch television programmes in which scientific and technological matters are presented and discussed. The percentages decrease when respondents are asked to name the channel, newspaper, radio station or website they mainly use to obtain information relating to scientific subjects. In 2021 the general increase in exposure to the sciences came to a halt, while with respect to the social and personal characteristics of subjects who use this kind of information the distribution remained unchanged. Those who make use of sources of scientific and technological information are younger and better educated persons, while the majority of seniors and subjects with a low level of education appear to find it difficult to acquire information through all five of the media channels referred to. USE OF SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION THROUGH SOCIAL NETWORKS Three out of four Italians confirm that they use Facebook and YouTube, 64% use Instagram and 51% use Twitter. In comparison with 2015, in 2021 an increase was noted in the reading, viewing and sharing of scientific information on social networks. Among those who use the first two social networks less than 25% have never seen or read scientific news in the platform referred to. This percentage rises to 39% on Instagram and 50% on Twitter. The reading and sharing of posts relating to matters of a scientific nature have increased over the years, while the growth of the number of citizens who directly follow the account of an expert or a scientific institution remained the same as that indicated in 2019. The propensity to follow this type of profile decreases with both the increase of age and the level of education of the user. CREDIBILITY AND QUALITY OF SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION In addition to being the predominant source of scientific information, television is also considered the most reliable, while, regardless of the fact social networks are often used for this purpose, the information and the news provided in these channels are deemed to be less reliable. If 58% of the population believe that news relating to scientific and technological matters disseminated on the social networks is not very reliable or completely unreliable, two out of five citizens state that they pay attention to the source of the news and one out of five will check other sources. Journalists are in any case considered to be the foremost disseminators of unreliable scientific news, this being an opinion upheld especially by the older population. Approximately 25% of the population believe that the modalities adopted by social networks in the dissemination of information intensify a process of misinformation while less than 10% attribute part of the blame to physicians and scientists. Subjects mainly responsible for the dissemination of scarcely credible news relating to issues of a scientific or medical nature according to the general public (%; 2017: n = 997; 2019: n = 978; 2021: n = 977). ATTITUDES TOWARDS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Investigating the influence of science on the values of society, we may note that there are wellarticulated and ambivalent opinions in this regard: four out of five Italians believe that the benefits of science are greater than any possible negative effects, while two out of three subjects believe that only science can tell us the truth about mankind and our place in the natural world, however 69% of respondents believe that science and technology modify our lifestyle too quickly and 36% believe that modern science threatens such core values as human life itself and the family. The older population, with a low level of education, is more prone to think that science changes too quickly and has an excessively high influence in society. Among university graduates and young people, who are more exposed to science in the media, the idea that the benefits of science outweigh the negative effects tends to prevail. MAIN SOURCES OF INFORMATION ON COVID-19 With the emergence of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Science in Society Observatory felt it would be appropriate to investigate the outlook of the population in order to comprehend the attitude of Italian citizens with respect to available information and their degree of trust in the various sources and in subjects involved in the emergency. In the earliest stage of the emergency the majority of Italians acquired information principally through television and/or radio news broadcasts and institutional websites. The percentage of persons actively seeking information on social networks fell to 4% in January 2021, at the beginning of the vaccination campaign, as social networks were considered a fertile setting for proponents of the negationist stance with respect to the public health emergency we are experiencing. In the May 2021 survey, we see how primary care physicians have regained an important role among citizens seeking information, while the role of television and radio news broadcasts has decreased. In fact, four out of five citizens consider general practitioners to be the primary source of information. SOURCE THAT CITIZENS TRUST THE MOST FOR THE PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN AGAINST COVID -19 At the beginning of the pandemic the sources deemed to be the most reliable for precautions to be taken were the websites of public institutions and ministerial guidelines and then general practitioners. Trust placed in the latter figure decreased at the outset of the initial lockdown, perhaps also due to the difficulty of being able to interact directly with medical practitioners, and it increased at the beginning of the vaccination campaign. Social media are not perceived as a reliable source in relation to practical measures to be adopted to protect ourselves against Coronavirus, and with the passing of time television has also been used as a source of general information and not for more practical aspects. FIDUCIA RIPOSTA DAI CITTADINI IN ALCUNI SOGGETTI A gennaio 2021 è stato chiesto agli intervistati quanta fiducia riponevano in determinati soggetti, quali medici e operatori sanitari, scienziati, autorità sanitarie nazionali, autorità sanitarie internazionali, amministratori politici nazionali, amministratori politici locali e giornalisti. TRUST PLACED BY CITIZENS IN PARTICULAR SUBJECTS In January 2021, interviewees were asked how much trust they placed in certain subjects, such as physicians and health-care professionals, scientists, national health-care authorities, international health-care authorities, political administrators at the national level and at the local level and journalists. The population recognised that the Civil Protection Department has a decisive role and this organisation received the largest number of positive reviews throughout the entire period examined. The judgement expressed regarding the work of scientific experts does not seem to be linked to the trust that citizens place in their efforts but, rather, to their capacity to communicate their opinions. Scientists are perceived as forming part of the group of most reliable operators and are second only to physicians and health-care professionals. COMMUNICATION OF EXPERTS REGARDING COVID-19 From the survey which was carried out, it has become evident that the Italian population has a highly negative opinion concerning the scientific experts’ capacity to communicate information. Only one out of three Italians expresses a clearly positive opinion in this regard. For almost half of the interviewees the diversity of the opinions generated confusion and approximately 8% recognise the skills and competence of the experts but form a negative assessment of their communication skills. Opinion regarding public communication events (e.g., through television, the press or on social networks) involving Italian scientific experts (%; n October 2020 = 991; n January 2021 = 987; n May 2021 = 977).

I benefici superano i rischi (52,4%) L’approvazione è stata troppo frettolosa (39,6%)

REASONS WHY ITALIAN CITIZENS DO NOT GET VACCINATED AGAINST SARS-COV-2 The motivations underlying the various attitudes assumed with respect to the vaccine are very interesting. Among citizens who intend to get vaccinated as soon as possible the prevalent idea is that the benefits outweigh the costs, while among those who prefer to wait the apparently predominant opinion is that there is insufficient data to support the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine. The idea that approval of the vaccine occurred too hastily is principally evident in those subjects who do not intend to get vaccinated even in the future, and only a small number of those who do not intend to get vaccinated against Covid-19 declare that they generally oppose the prospect of being vaccinated. This variety of opinions was confirmed also at the beginning of the vaccination campaign, with 52% of the population accepting and approving the costs/benefits ratio of the vaccine and only 2% presenting the ‘no-vax’ stance due to ideological positions related not exclusively to the pandemic itself. Main reasons why Italians do not intend to get vaccinated (%; 2021: n = 977).

Yes, I have been vaccinated or I intend to do it soon (83,8%) I trust the scientists (21,1%)

I do not trust pharmaceutical companies (16.8%)

The data reveal its safety (21,3%)

Yes, I will get vaccinated, but later (10%) I do not feel at risk (13.9%) Benefits exceed risks (52,4%)

Approval was too hasty (39,6%)

I will not get vaccinated (6%)

I do not trust vaccines (28,3%)

Approval was too hasty (36,6%)

The data do not provide a sufficient demonstration of safety and effectiveness (45,2%)
