It was the morning after a very big storm.
Branches and bird nests lay broken on the ground.
2
‘After a storm, it’s time to make a wish,’ said the owl.
‘Oh, I wish the storm never comes back,’
said the red deer.
‘I wish for a big, tasty breakfast,’
said the badger.
‘I wish I could fly in the sky,’
peeped the pygmy shrew.
They all giggled.
Then there was the strangest of sounds. 3
Screech!

5
‘It’s from across the stream!’ said the owl.
‘It’s from past the big tree!’ said the badger.
‘It’s from near the rocks!’ said the red deer.
6
‘Maybe it’s from the BIG
DARK
HOLE,’ said the pygmy shrew. 7
‘I’m the bravest,’ said the badger. ‘I’ll go and take a look.’
He pushed through the bluebells ...
and splashed
across the stream.
8
He marched around the big tree.
But before he got to the rocks beside the BIG
DARK
HOLE ... 9
! h c e e r Sc Eeek! The badger wasn’t quite brave enough. He ran back around the big tree,
across the stream,
through the bluebells ...
10
and right past his friends.
‘What is that sound? 11
It’s kind of spooky.’
