confident!

Here are some tips to help you feel confident! Different things work for different people – try them all out and work out which work best for you :)

01 Surround yourself with people who make you feel good!

Some people have the gift of making others feel great about themselves – they are probably confident people, and happy to give out compliments. These are great people to have as friends, because they give you confidence too!

Some people actually make you feel worse about yourself perhaps they put you down or are negative. These people are probably insecure about themselves, but don’t let them get you down – stick with the positive people instead and feel the confidence grow in you! Plus, try to give compliments to others and you will help to grow your friends’ confidence at the same time!

Make decisions that are true to you!

Do you lack the confidence to make decisions? Try this – think about how your life would be different in 1 year if you chose yes, or no.

For example – can’t decide whether to go on a trip with a group of new friends? In 1 year’s time they could be your best friends, if you decide to go! Can’t decide whether to get on stage and sing? In one year’s time you could be signed to a record label – they couldn’t sign you if you didn’t sing! And it also works the other way around – can’t decide whether to try smoking for the first time? In 1 year’s time you will be very happy that you didn’t start and get hooked – re shapo ka wasting money!

TURN OVER A For this issue’s cover girl competition, we asked you to tell us about a time you turned over a new leaf. We received so many amazing entries, and ended up choosing 2 winners!

I could feel the excitement rising in me as I held the beautifully wrapped present in my hands. I fumbled with the string and then, unable too contain my curiosity any longer, I ripped it open. It was a sleek, brand new phone. I scored straight marks at school for my form 3 and this was my reward. I had always envied my friends who were exchanging news about ‘chat rooms’, ‘instant messaging’ and e-mailing’ all of which I knew nothing about. Now I was going to find out.

It started out simply enough. I was searching for some information online when I stumbled upon a social networking site. Soon I became glued to my new found electronic Friend. I began to spend more and more time on YouTube and became enslaved by Facebook and Twitter. I had never imagined that the day would come when I would be transfixed by the glowing screen before me. Whenever I was not glued to these social networking sites, I would be going through gossip or fashion websites.

As time passed, I realized that I was hooked on the internet. During weekends, when I had more time on my hands, I could easily spend hours on my phone. It came to a point where I chose to lock myself in my room, refusing to come out and take part in family discussions. I preferred to stay connected to the people I befriended in cyberspace although I had never met them. Soon I was spending the wee hours of the morning glued to the internet. Sleep was relegated to scattered naps and my grades at school also began deteriorating. It was about that time that my parents started voicing

their disapproval. It became obvious to them that I was spending too much time on the internet. I was asked to tone down my usage of the internet. Yet however hard I tried, I was unable to pull myself away, unable to terminate my chat sessions and unable to concentrate on my lessons. I was desperate for just another click, just another look at my e-mail.

Then one day, my parents took away my phone. I sputtered and fumed but to no avail. I promised my parents that I would turn over a new leaf.

My life slowly stumbled around me, I felt like a part of me was being taken away from me. Felt that my shoulders were getting weaker and my head getting lighter, which made me scared that it was giving up on me. It was like everything I had was slowly changing once my phone was taken away. I was really miserable without it, without checking my e-mails or anything. My parents had made sure that they take away all possible gadgets that they knew would tempt me to press them eventually. I felt like something was taking over my body and I had no control.

Once my phone was taken away, I sat myself down and told myself that my phone wasn’t always everything.

So I drew up a plan: I am gonna try out some new hobbies. I am gonna try out some things like baking, chilling with a few close friends and getting the chance to experience things that I hardly ever saw because I would keep myself in my room all the time. The experience of living my life without my phone was quite amazing, very educational to be honest. It mainly taught me that the world doesn’t always revolve around a small phone, it had kept me in lock down like a prisoner in jail!

I patiently waited for them to bring my phone back, Once I got it back, I got too excited but I was also feeling bad because my mind and body was used to that old habit I used to have. I really taught myself that life is beautiful without a phone, I told myself that I won’t let my past affect me ever. Now I feel so true to my wishes as a young girl who was going through such a rough patch along the road.

NEWLEAF My name is Gomotsegang Dipuo.

This is a story common to many, but this is my story and only I can tell it. Born and raised in Maun, I have always been a child passionate about fashion. At the age of 5 it was evident to my parents that I was born with a God-given gift, the talent to turn a simple fabric or piece of cloth into clothes. By the age of 7, the dolls I played with were the envy of my peers. Over the years my love for designing grew and I took time to learn all that I could.

However there is a flip side to being gifted which is not so nice; because of my goals of one day being a top designer, having my own fashion empire and most of all representing my country at international runways, I came across many difficult challenges.

Even though I had so much faith in myself, my peers tried to discourage me and criticize my choice of career.

Still I held on to my dreams, but even elders tried to convince me to choose a different career path. So many nights I cried myself to sleep, wondering if I would ever achieve my dreams so as to prove all those who underestimated me wrong. The hardest part of my journey was that I didn’t have the financial resources to buy a sewing machine and fabrics, and that made it almost impossible for me to design a collection and showcase at local fashion shows.

So I told myself that I would wait until I was at university, then I would start designing.

In 2012 while approaching my JC exams, a moment of divine inspiration hit me.

I asked myself “why should I wait, why should not having a machine stop me?”

That was my moment of Turning a New Leaf. This was when I decided to use the little that I have to show people what I am capable of. Doing form 4 at Maun Senior, I became the girl who collected plastics and newspapers and used them to design garments. For the first time I felt like my friends, family and my society finally got to see my potential.

Many admitted that indeed I would go places with my talent. My plastic dresses wowed judges at The Rubbish Fashion Show Competition Maun, which was a dream come true.

Within a few months an article about my work was in the Midweek Sun and Peolwane Magazine. And today I am a first year student at Limkokwing studying Fashion and Apparel Design.

I am a young talented girl, who decided to turn challenges into opportunities.

This taught me to take risks and do something out of the usual. Till this day I still can’t believe my achievements because of dresses made of plastic.

Growing up in Maun and away from Gaborone made me miss out on a lot of opportunities, events and meeting other people in my field. But this has never discouraged me. I have been blessed to be discovered by local celebs I look up to such as Zeus, and to be mentored by designers like Aobakwe Molosiwa and Kaone Moremong to name a few. For so long I have been in the industry but behind the scenes!

You are probably anxious about this stage in your life right now. You probably always doubt yourself, wondering if you are good enough and doing everything in your power to fit in and be “cool.”

What if I told you that most of the things you dream for yourself right now have come true 17 years later? What if I told you that although you doubted whether you were smart enough to achieve half the things you wanted to, you actually made it happen? Otsile Ramanteba am just intruding as a guy to say... girls please. If someone says they love you they mean that u are the best that there is in their caliber, so respect yourselves not to become an option or second bests. Love is a two point connection not a triangle scandal.

I wouldn’t say break up or dump him because in his head you’re just a back up, your relationship died a long time ago so I leave you with this: just respect yourself, be strong and move on with life, your heart and brain have the capability to heal, to be free and to be happy regardless of any situation you come across ONLY if you let them.

We get asked this question a lot: what does it mean to be a true SKY Girl? We’ve even had people telling us about ‘fake’ SKY Girls, who say they are part of SKY but don’t stay true to themselves. Let’s set the record straight!

The clear definition is this: A SKY

Girl is any girl between 13 and 19 who has taken the SKY pledge to stay true to herself. BUT, as well as taking the SKY pledge, you have to follow it!

To be who I am, not who someone else thinks I should be.

It’s seriously tricky when you’re a teenage girl to remember who YOU are, and not to behave like other people. But remembering this, and getting to know yourself, is part of the SKY journey. Don’t give in to pressure to be like anyone else, and you are a true SKY Girl.

I will say Shapo Ka Yone to the things that I am good without – like smoking and backstabbing.

These are the only 2 Shapos for all SKY Girls, because you told us they are challenges in your lives. If you stay true to yourself and say no to smoking (or ask for help giving up), and you never backstab your true friends, then you are a true SKY Girl

I will make choices that are true to me.

I will follow my skyline. I pledge to find my SKY. ‘Choices that are true to me’ means truly considering all decisions before you make them.

‘Following our SKYline’ means sticking to your sures and shapos, and succeeding because of it. ‘Finding your SKY’ means eventually becoming super happy with the person you are, and blooming into the woman you were destined to be.

If you can honestly say that you’re living your pledge, then you are a true SKY Girl, and you will go far :) Remember, if you know anyone who has taken the pledge but doesn’t stick to it – tell them they will be happier if they stay true to themselves, and help them stick to it.

That’s what true SKY Girls do ;)

This issue, we’re talking about the best way to achieve a happy, healthy body and mind: it’s all about balance!

Some teens become unhappy because they are striving for a tiny waist, or wishing their breasts would grow faster, but guess what – extreme measures like putting pressure on yourself or taking diet pills (re shapo ka tsone!) are not the way to achieve happiness.

The key to happiness is balance; being a balanced person makes you happy, healthy, likeable and wellrounded. So try out some balance in these areas of your life:

Colour Run For those who prefer to take their sports with a pinch of fun, SKY was out in force at the first Botswana Colour Run, which took place in September 2015.
