Hi, SKY Girls :) I took the SKY pledge in August, last year because I’ve always wanted to be part of something bigger than myself; something positive to have foundation for my life, and the pledge gave me direction. Since then, in whatever I do I think of my pledge as a protective barrier against things I am shapo with. I feel like I’m part of a community. I am part of a new generation! Since last year, girls all over BW have said that we don’t want smoking to be part of our lives; SKY girls ga re batle go goga, and that SKY should talk about it. I don’t smoke and I don’t want to try. It’s not cool although some people try to make it look swaggy. In this edition, #SKYMag takes a special look at the smoke-free movement building up all over BW and the world. Our generation wants to kick out tobacco, and we give you the low- down . SKY investigates: • How our generation is different! Pg8 • Smoke free movements all over the world – oh, yeah! Pg10

Happy New Year, #SKYNation! It’s been one year since the SKY launch! So many cool things are in store for the #SKYNation and the movement- beginning with this issue of SKY Magazine :) Our guest editorial for this issue was written by Viyellah Dinoge, a super- talented SKY girl with the gift of wordsmithing <3

• BW teens say “I don’t” on FB – express yourself! Pg 12 • Boys like girls who don’t smoke – their words! Pg 14 #SKYMag also got to chat to Beatenberg who have mad love for the SKY Nation- Matt even wore the wristband during their performance at Botswanacraft! And their music? One word- incredible! That band is made up of very talented young men, and God bless Africa for their handsomeness! We’re also keeping it real and giving you the best fashion, music, advice and a coool quiz about which cute celebrity is your ideal match ;) Keep it locked, and enjoy! SKY has boosted my confidence and I want to emanate the same vibe to all SKY girls to boost their confidence in 2015. Keep your head in the game and fulfil your SKY!!

Love, llah Viye

Myth:

1. MOST teenagers smoke :/ 2. Why do 6 out of 10 teens believe this myth? There are different reasons why the few teens who do smoke might stand out: • They stand out BECAUSE they are the minority, and they stick out like a sore thumb • They might be trying to show off, so they’ll smoke at parties with other teens, BUT they know that it’s not cool, so they hide it from their parents…

HONEY, YOU’VE GOT THIS! So maybe you finished Standard 7 last year and are in Form 1, or maybe even form 5 to varsity and it just feels like your nerves are on steroids. It’s a New Year and you still feel like you are not ready for all that it has in store for you. Expectations, the various pressures, demands, anxiety and fear never come short in regards to such a situation, yes? “And how does a honey deal with all these?” you might ask. Here are a few tips on how to handle the ‘new school’ jitters☺ :

1.

<3 SK Y

3.

FELLOW BEING TRUE TO YOURSELF AND SISTERS zing as a great There is nothing as strong and ama be forced to may ds frien sisterhood. You and your schools), and and es grad rent diffe to g part ways (goin you or get like to making new friends, getting people Firstly, y. worr huge a be along with you might also girls tend We out? d stan to e mad why fit in if you were admire to yone ever to want to be perfect and cool for ke mista the e mak then and want to associate with and the think we g ethin som into s elve of transforming ours remedy for this society around us wants us to be. The others around and self is to be genuine and true to your are, don’t you as just zing ama you at all times. You are the be aim to change for anyone else and always person you would love to meet!

KNOW YOUR SKY l in ANY THING, you need As a young honey who wants to exce o sure ka eng or you may to know gore o shapo ka eng and else’s dreams or goals. For be misled or caught up in somebody example: king, laziness and drinking KE SHAPO KA: Peer pressure, smo es, not losing myself and KE SURE KA: My goals, good grad helping others.

2.

4.

And then stick with it! <3

5.

CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY! Whether you’re yourself or somebody else, people are going to judge you either way, so rather be judged for being you. If that happens, it doesn’t mean you should ever quit being awesome! ☺ As Steve Job says, “don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown your own inner voice, and most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you want to become. Everything else is secondary”

Xoxo Bongani Sindisiwe Sigwele :)

CONFIDENCE Believing in yourself and your capabilities can go a long way when going into a new environment. There will be many challenges that are going to come your way, and baby girl, a great way at winning this battle is to keep strong, hold your faith and let no one or anything stand in your way. Maybe you weren’t so confident at your previous school, but now is the time for you to believe in yourself and your goals. There’s no other way to achieve your goals and dreams if you do not believe. Forget the past, if anyone is going to use your past against you, then they don’t belong in your future! Find friends and sisters who will help build you. And remember, you can never look bad if you’re smiling ☺

GET ONE BE A HELPING HAND TO s to help girl us for nt orta imp It is ver y toward ving one another as we are mo hand g pin hel a a greater future, and too be er nev can nds from your frie t being alone much. Some may think tha the best is lf rse and doing things you t me, trus but gs thin ut way to go abo e of forc the there is nothing that beats sgirl ng you true strong, ambitious and NOTHING!

Robin Brink (drums) and Ross Matthew Field (lead vocalist, rhythm guitar), ael’ and their collaborative ‘Raph s, song hit Dorkin are well- known for their . They recently performed in track with DJ Clock, ‘Pluto (Remember You)’ about their music, being part of a Gabs, and SKYMag got to chat to the guys :) W! IRLSB band, and what they think of SKYG

Their sound is a cool, pop mix of different influences, including drum’n’bass, jazz, classical, world, electronic music and uniquely South African sounds. The guys have had an extremely busy Festive season, touring in Zimbabwe, SA, Moçambique, and of course, BW! When SKYMag met up with Beatenberg, they had just finished their sound check in preparation for their performance at Botswanacraft. Even though they had had a long day of meetings and interviews, the guys were looking forward to hanging out with us and chatting about the powerful force that young people are in the world. They were very excited to be in the country, and loved being in Botswana. Rob said, “Everyone who’s in Botswana knows that it’s good to be in Botswana. I’m here for the first time, and I know that too, now… it’s beautiful!” Their song with DJ Clock took them to the top of local and regional charts, and no- one knows about the power of a crowd better than popular musicians! In an interview with notanotherzebra.com, Rob said about ‘Pluto’s fame, “…There’s a lot of pressure to deliver equally successful releases but we’re lucky to have great support from radio and from our fans.” As we stand at Botswanacraft with the jazzy music of Hugh Masekela wafting on the breeze, we talk about being young, knowing yourself and keeping your individuality within a group. Being part of a generation that knows what we want is an awesome thing. It takes a lot to be an individual when the world wants you to be a carbon copy! The guys know all about this. Being part of a band means that you should be yourself, but also know how to be part of a team that is working together for a common cause- in Beatenberg’s case- THE MUSIC :D Ross said, “I think it’s a lucky combination, the fact that we have complementary interests and skills. We obviously have times when we don’t work together so well; we have conflicts to work through but I guess overall, we have a feeling for each other.”

“I guess trying to keep your individuality within the whole is what makes it interesting. You like being around people who are different from you, that’s what makes it cool to be yourself,” Matt added, with a thoughtful look on his face.

Check out Beatenberg telling us what kind of girls they like on page 14!

Beatenberg’s word to SKYGIRLSBW! Rob: “It’s always rewarding to be independent, to stand aside from the general tendencies of others and do your own thing, if you know it’s the right thing to do” Ross: “Just do what feels right :)” Matt: “I think these guys said it all!”

Did you know? “Pluto (Remember You)” spent 17 weeks as the most played song in South Africa The guys recorded it with DJ Clock in 24 hours at DJ Clock’s studio in Durban Beatenberg started in 2008 Fast forward to their performance, later that night- it was epic! They performed songs from their newest album, ‘Hanging Gardens of Beatenberg’, and the crowd went wild, dancing the night away :) Matt also rocked the SKY wristband in support of SKY girls knowing their sures and shapos, making a stand for what they believe in in the new year! :D Yay #Beatenberg #RepSKY

Their Album, ‘Hanging Gardens of Beatenberg’ took them two years to create The guys named their band Beatenberg after a town in Switzerland, where Rob’s uncle lives Beatenberg collaborated with musical legend, Bra Hugh Masekela at the Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival in Soweto, last year

Gogontlejang Phaladi is a young philanthropist who founded the Pillar of Hope Project in 2000 to help young people who have to look after their brothers and sisters because their parents'’

lives were claimed by HIV/AIDS. She is also a motivational speaker and is going into farming. She is a wonderful example of the impact that young people can have, and go re we can each be a force of good in the world.

Hi, Gogontlejang :) What do you do on a regular day? I don’t think I have a “regular day” because my days are never identical! I don’t have a standard routine like most people do. I don’t have a 9-5 job, I have a “when I open my eyes to when I close my eyes” :) About once a month I travel or visit local communities, doing community outreach initiatives. About twice or three times a week I can be found inside an office and of course the usual meeting drills. I spend several afternoons and weekends doing school work as well as learning French. I spend many nights working… I try by all means to make time to spend with my family at my parents’ farm. How do you balance your work at the Pillar of Hope Project and still handle schoolwork and chores? Well my work as a philanthropist and as a leader is not a hobby I can just tick off, it is not a job I will retire from, it is not a mere activity I will one day lose interest in, it is not a sport I will one day outgrow. It is my life. This has never in anyway affected my performance and participation at school. As for chores, the world may know THE Gogontlejang Phaladi but at home I am just simply GG, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phaladi who expect her to wake up early even on weekends, serve them morning tea and do household chores like every other child.

Gogontlejang wears: Polka dot denim dress worn as skirt, P140 and Yellow wedges, P225 from LEGiT; Denim shirt, striped black and white skirt, floral jumper, Stylist’s own.

Do you believe in the power of young people to make a change in the world? How do you think that the youth can effect positive change? As young people we are the single largest group of the whole population of Africa. Given the demographic weight of young people in Africa, it is therefore essential for African Governments to invest in young people in order to reap demographic dividends and for youth to be at the center of all development initiatives as we are the present and future of the world. How do you resist negative peer pressure? Maintaining that I ALWAYS have a choice. One must never forget that in life, we always have a choice. I refuse to believe that I can be forced to do something I do not want to engage in without a choice. In every situation that I am in, I acknowledge the choices I have and make the right decision. It’s also important to draw boundaries and make them clear to people. We need to be careful of the kind of people we attract in our lives so that we do not become vulnerable to negative peer pressure. SKY Girls admire you and the work that you do. Would you like to add a shout- out to them? Know your value and your worth, never settle for less and never let anyone tell you that you are not good enough!

You will be exposed to so many things, because you and your friends will be curious about trying things out. Despite your curiosity, one thing that you will never find yourself doing is going to the semausu and buying a cigarette. A few other teens might experiment with that, but not you, it feels and looks wrong. It’s also a good thing that you won’t experience negative peer pressure because you will choose friends who have minds of their own and will respect your decisions, too. Because of all the changes and challenges you will experience, you will have a different perspective of life. They will teach you to be who you are, and help groom you to be the woman you become. Hang in there!

Love, Sumaiyah :)

Sky Loves What’s hot, new and interesting, this year? SKY has the low- down on who and what to look out for in 2015 Quvenzhané Wallis: We love Quvenzhané in the newest version of the classic rags- to- riches tale, ‘Annie’. She stole our hearts in 2012 in her role as Hushpuppy in awardwinning movie, ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ and has done it again in ‘Annie’. For her role in the musical, she was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress - Musical or Comedy. Not bad at all, for the 12 year old cutie!

Statement Tees: If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a statement tee is worth a banging attitude. Whether you want to say something serious, quirky or funny- with a statement tee you can say it all without saying a word ;)

My Star: Our local talent gets a chance to shine, once again with the popular show, My Star. Auditions were held in December last year, and this January, and we’re gearing up to check out go re ke bo mang who made the grade. Tune in to BTV in February for the awesomeness <3

Alice Phoebe Lou: The indie pop princess grew up in Kommitje in South Africa, and moved to Berlin after school, where she did street performances and shows in clubs around Europe. She blew up when she performed for TEDx in Berlin, and is aiming for the stars! She said to thesouthafrican.com, “I see pop stars with so much fame, so much power; yet they use it only to advance themselves. I want to be different, I want to stay pure.” SKY thinks that’s G. Euri #SKY_Guy and Friend of SKY, Euri, has signed a deal with local record label, Rock the City Music. He will produce music under the label and spread his musical wings all over Africa and the world! We’re super proud of Euri, who has been sure ka SKY girls since day one :)

We wanted to know what you would do if your friend was in a difficult situation and you didn’t feel like you or your friends could give her the right advice… Should you go behind your friend’s back and ask an adult? We got some pretty interesting responses… check them out! The #SKYNation has spoken!

Alicia Rosman Asking an adult wouldn’t necessarily mean mentioning ur friend’s name, so if it’s something u can’t tackle, it would be better to ask someone wiser. If names are not mentioned it wouldn’t be going behind anyone’s back.

Abigail Seabelo Mothibi I won’t go behind her back. I would rather help her find people who can help us get through the whole situation.

Yolande Anita Mogapiwa you cannot do that; that is not true friendship. You cannot help her but you can be there to support her through whatever situation.

YES 52%

Tisky Ntshole Salvator I think it’s okay as long as we trust the adult, because our parents have experience. Since experience is the best teacher, it’s best we ask for help... and like Setswana says, letlhaku le lespwa le nna fa godimo ga le legololo..... Cindy Leatame I would ask an adult... But not just any adult... An adult I know could be of great help, that is trained to help... E.g a social worker or guidance teacher! That way, confidentiality is maintained and my friend gets quality advice! Bonolo Palesa Yohannes Yes I would seek assistance from an adult. They have more experience in life, they have passed through their teenage years, so most probably they’ll know what’s best to do... #Ke Sure Ka Informed Decisions

What if you’re in a relationship but your friends don’t like your boyfriend? You might want to consider WHY your friends don’t like your boyfriend. Maybe they know something about him that you don’t; they might also think he’s a bad influence on you, or be upset about how much less time you are spending with them in favour of him. These are real concerns, and communicating with your friends is the easiest way to get to the root cause of their dislike. Listen to their concerns, and take time to reflect on your relationship. Try to put yourself in their position. On the other hand, it may just be a case of a clash of personalities; or

When is the right time to have sex in a relationship? My advice is to only make decision to have sex once you have a thorough knowledge about sex and its consequences, a healthy relationship with your partner, and a healthy relationship with yourself. It might help to ask yourself these questions: Do you know about the birth control options available to you and where you can get them? Are you prepared to deal with the social (if people find out), physical and emotional consequences of sex? Do you know about protecting yourself from STIs and unwanted pregnancy? Are you with the right partner? Can the two of you settle disagreements with open and fair communication? Can you discuss contraceptives with each other comfortably? Are you sure that he (or she) is not trying to convince you, even after you’ve made it clear that you’re not ready?

even, in more unfortunate circumstances, a little bit of jealousy, which happens sometimes. True friends will learn to manage their feelings and accept your relationship, especially if it is healthy and fulfilling for you ☺ “Before he even becomes my boyfriend I’d gauge my friend’s feelings about him to see if we’d all get along. I’d make sure they get to know him (by hanging out) also if they are apprehensive about his past behaviour or possible influence on me. I know my friends have my best interests at heart.” Tlhalefo Diutlwileng, Form 4, Maruapula Secondary School.

If, at any moment, you feel uncomfortable talking about sex with your partner, yourself or a medical professional, you are definitely not ready yet. Also, drinking/drugs should NEVER be involved in any decisions about sex, so be careful not to put yourself in such a situation. The consequences of engaging in sexual activity should never be taken lightly, and this is a decision that may take months- even years to make. If you have the right partner, they should be willing to take the journey with you. Also, you should know that the legal age of consent for sex is 18. “It helps to have a pre-determined goal, preceding even your current relationship on when you want to have sex. For example, you may have decided before meeting your boyfriend that you were going to wait till marriage, or after you graduate from University. These goals are not set in stone, but will give you an idea on what YOU really want outside of manipulation” Bakadzi Moeti, Counsellor Educator- University of Botswana

What should you do if your boyfriend wants you to try something that you don’t really want to do? It’s important for you to have clear physical and emotional boundaries when you go into a relationship. It is not too late to establish boundaries right now. All it takes is for you to take some time alone and reflect on what really makes you happy and comfortable. Consent, which involves the choices you make that concern your mind and body, is an absolutely personal choice, and shouldn’t be given through guilt trips or manipulation.

ResOLUTION / REVolution! It’s a brand new year, #SKYNation! It’s a great feeling to stand at the edge of a new beginning, looking into a future full of promise, with a heart full of resolutions that will carry you through :) Sometimes, in our enthusiasm, we make grand promises to ourselves- some we keep- and others… well… Here’s a SKY guide on how to #StayTrue to your New Year’s resolutions. Revolutionise your life- redefine your SKY <3

1.

do-able chunks, like ‘study Maths for an hour every day’. That way, your resolution is manageable and you can work on it every day.

4.

Be realistic- not vague. If your goal is to lose weight, for example, rather be specific. You can say ‘lose 5kg’ and then break it down into ‘exercise at least 3 times a week ’. THAT is a goal that your brain will recognise when you’re looking into your future :)

5.

6.

Getting a friend to help you keep your resolutions is a great way to achieving them. Having to be accountable to someone else e raya go re you’re more likely to try harder, so as not to disappoint them :) So telling your bestie that your goal is to jog every morning, means that every time she sees you, o tla go botsa go re a mme o kile o a taboga, today…

Keep a resolution diary. It will help you to keep track of how you’re getting along with your resolutions. *winning* :)

Who is your ideal Celeb Crush?

SKY

Z I

We haven’t forgotten that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner :) We’re all about sharing the love- with your friends, your family- and maybe letting your crush know how you feel! In the meantime, take our quiz and find out who your ideal crush is ;) When you have a moment to yourself, after school, what would you be doing? 1. Trying on your new top and taking a few selfies (a) 2. Drawing or writing poetry in your diary (b) 3. Reading that new book you borrowed from the library (c) When you get a crush on someone, what is the first thing that you notice about them? 1. The way he has styled his hair (b) 2. His fun personality (a) 3. The way he talks to you (c) If there was a piece of jewellery that described your personality, it would be: 1. A simple, classic gold/ silver chain with a diamanté charm (b) 2. A tribal/ beaded neckpiece (c) 3. A neon statement necklace (a) Mostly (a)

Niall Horan= The Turn-Up Buddy :D You’re a fun- loving girl, and you want someone who you can share exciting experiences with! One Direction’s Niall is a cutie who likes the turn up… If you’re more interested in dancing the night away than reading a novel, then this guy is def for you! He’s also got a romantic streak, so he’ll probably end up holding your hand when he checks on you at the party, but he’s also totally comfortable with your confidence! *Yep- yep*

Mostly (b)

If you and your crush went on a date, he would show you he cares by: 1. Taking you out for ice cream and then to see a movie of your choice (aww, sweet :) ) (b) 2. Surprising you with two tickets to see Samantha Mogwe in concert (you LOVE her!)(a) 3. Going out to a poetry show and reciting a poem for you (*snaps fingers*)(c) Pick a colour that most reminds you of your crush: 1. A deep, dark blue (b) 2. Bright red (a) 3. Grey (c)

Diggy Simmons= The Super- Romantic Ahhhh… He’s dreamy AND romantic! Diggy is perfect for you because he speaks from his heart. He’s willing to listen to your problems if you’re having issues with your BFF and gives you solid advice. He’s attentive, responds to your texts and gazes into your eyes when he talks to you. You like guys like Diggy, who aren’t afraid to tell you how they feel. *How dreeeeamy*

Mostly (c)

Jaden Smith= The Deep One You’re probably the kind of SKY Girl who LOVES to read novels and write in your diary ALL the time! You see the world a little differently, and appreciate a crush who also has a unique perspective. If you’re into quirky cool, then Jaden’s your ideal guy crush! He’s super artistic- if you guys went on a date, he would probably take you to the skate park, an art exhibition or a poetry show. *Snaps fingers!*

2014 might have been a challenging year for you, girl, but luckily the pressure is easing up in 2015 <3 PLUS you are stronger! You’ll be benefitting from positive friendships until August, and then calm down a bit, even though the good times will continue to roll :) Your schoolwork is going to be in the front of your mind until about June, when you will study really hard and make sure you’re all caught up with the new curriculum, but after that, you’ll have an easier time at school. Did someone say ‘love’? :D You’re going to be buzzing with attractive energy, so don’t be surprised if the guys are buzzing around YOU, lol... If you’re not feeling coupled life, going solo could also be your vibe, so the main theme for this year is ‘choose wisely’. With crushes and friendships, you’re sifting through, holding dear those whom you value (and realising why you value them) and moving on from relationships that are draining or not cool to you <3
