I have a crush on a boy but I don’t know if he likes me Sorry boo. Sometimes it’s really hard to tell what is going on in someone else’s head! You pretty much have 3 options. If you are brave enough, tell him and ask if he likes you, straight up! Secondly, you could ask a friend to ask his friend… this one often works well :) The last option is to do nothing, stay silent and hope he guesses (but here’s a warning: he probably won’t!).

I am self-conscious about my skin Try to remember that no one else is worrying about your face – in fact, we tend to judge ourselves very harshly compared to others. Many teens have a problem with bad skin and it is unfortunately just a part of growing up, but you can try drinking lots of water, washing your face every day, avoiding touching your face with your hands and making sure you clean your pillow case at least twice a week!

My parents don’t support my dreams Even though it might seem like they are not being supportive, they really just want the best for you. They are probably worried that your dreams might not lead to a financially stable life, and that is a valid concern. Try to find a compromise – sit your parents down and tell them that you are serious about following your dream, but you understand they are worried. Assure them that until it starts paying the bills, your dream will remain a hobby.

My friends say mean things about me and put me down Real friends don’t put each other down, they build each other up. It might seem like a big hurdle but you need to get rid of any friends who put you down, it’s just not cool and you don’t need to accept it. In this situation it’s usually best to be the bigger person and move on to other friends while avoiding any drama or accusations.

My boyfriend is pressuring me into sex You deserve better. Nobody, and we mean NOBODY, should be pressured into sex. Sometimes a boy might say “if you really loved me you would do it”, but it’s not true. It is emotional manipulation. In fact, if he really loved you he would not force you to do something you are not comfortable with. Only consenting, informed adults should have sex. If he’s not willing to wait, he’s not worth your time.

This issue’s theme is #MostTeens <3 Continuing with that theme, this issue we tackle 10 of the MOST common problems that teens ask us about through our Facebook inbox!

12

YOUR QUEST ANSW

My friend is behaving badly and won’t listen to my advice You’re a good friend for caring so much :) Sometimes it’s difficult to persuade someone to change, because they don’t want to listen. The best thing you can do in this situation is show them that you love them unconditionally, but also make sure they know the consequences of their actions. With your support they are likely to make their own wise decisions in the end.

I need study tips Break all your information into bitesize chunks so you don’t get too stressed. Set aside a little chunk to study every evening –not too much. Find a good study buddy – explaining something to someone else is one of the best ways to learn. Also, remember to look after yourself. Make sure you eat enough, drink lots of water and sleep at least 7 hours a night for optimum brain function.

I’m unhappy with my body Remember you are still growing, so your body is still changing. The body you have now might not be the same one you have when you are 20. Be thankful for the things your body can DO, like walking, running and stretching. Compliment yourself – list the things you love about your body and try to focus less on the things you don’t like. The more you change your focus, the more your mindset will change.

I am being bullied and I don’t know what to do Bullies are mean because they are insecure and unhappy, and they are trying to make themselves feel better. But that doesn’t mean you have to be nice to them! Try to rise up, feel confident from the inside, and show them they can’t scare you or bring you down. A lot of bullies will stop their bad behaviour if they see they can’t affect you negatively. If they are really threatening, tell a teacher or parent and they will help you.

INBOX TIONS WERED!

I feel under pressure to drink or smoke It’s good to recognise that you’re feeling pressure. That’s the first step to avoiding something. Trust your instinct – if you feel that it’s something you don’t want to do, just don’t do it. There is no shame in that. Choose a way to refuse that matches your personality – you could make a joke, explain that it’s just not your style, say ‘shapo ka yone’, politely say ‘no thank you’ – whatever your way of refusing something is, make sure you own it :)

Things that teen girls do As much as we have things that we say #WeDont to, there are those things that We Do! Check out a short list of the things that teens girls do that SKY love!

14

Play Sports

We love playing netball, football, basketball, tennis, karate, and all other sports. It’s a way to exercise and stay healthy. We also create new friends and find our squads on the field. After a long day of classes and reading, playing a sport helps us release all that fatigue. Join a team now and your future self will be grateful for that.

Enjoy our Hobbies

It feels good to do something just for the fun of it and not to compete. Having a hobby is our thing that brings us closer to our friends. Some sports can be a hobby. Some people like taking walks, baking, collecting hats, or DIY projects as their hobbies. You can even turn your hobby into a profitable project.

Make bucket lists

We love making lists. Even more so, we love looking forward to the next awesome thing. Setting goals to tick off our list makes us wake up excited in the morning. We are young, active, and still got a long way to go. Make that bucket list with easy and accessible activities like ‘learn how to play an instrument’, and also include the more challenging ones like ‘get my driver’s license at 18’. #SKYChallenge

Make friends

We love our friends. Ditsala tse di re ratelang life. Those friends that are there for us and are good to us. A good friend is someone who would jump in the mud with you when a bully pushed you in just to make you feel better. Someone who wouldn’t feel ashamed to hold your hand and call you their sister. The friends that we say #WeDon’t together.

Stay True

We do stay true to who we are. Rona SKY Girls, we make choices that are true to us. We understand gore there is so much peer pressure going around that can be challenging to avoid, mara we try our best to say no and stay true. Dilo tse dingwe ga di kgatlhe and rona we know our priorities in life.

Schools Clubs

Being a part of a team can help you grow personally and professionally. You may know how to work well as an individual but in life you have to know how to work well with other people. Joining school clubs is the best start to work with people. There may be some disagreements and obstacles on the way but it’s good to experience that.

We set goals and work hard to achieve them

Life is not just about making friends and having fun. We got goals to achieve and today is the day to start working hard to make that happen. Remember, start now and rest tomorrow. Write your goals down on a paper and remind yourself of them every morning you wake up.

We got good vibes

Being a part of a team can help you grow personally and professionally. You may know how to work well as an individual but in life you have to know how to work well with other people. Joining school clubs is the best start to work with people. There may be some disagreements and obstacles on the way but it’s good to experience that.

Try new things

We love trying new things. Ordering something different on the menu, cutting our relaxed hair to go natural, or even trying chess for the first time. This can help you learn more about yourself and understand what you like and what you don’t like. While some things you don’t need to try to know gore o shapo ka tsone, some are harmless so go right ahead, try something new!

We have fun

There is so much we do that makes us happy. Playing sports, hanging out with our friends, reading our fave books, painting, singing, going for movies, and more. We are young and full of life. There is so much out there for us to explore and for us to accomplish. Our experiences count and we say sure ka yone to embracing life.

teens

Even though the characters in TV dramas are not real, they often tackle issues we real teenagers face in our lives. What can we learn from 13 Reasons Why and Rhythm City that can help us?

Thirteen Reasons Why 13 Reasons Why follows the story of Clay Jensen, who returns home from school to find a mysterious package on his bed. When he opens it, he finds seven cassette tapes. He watches them discovers were recorded by Hannah Baker, a girl that he went to school with. The tapes address the thirteen people who bullied and hurt her in some way. She was being called nasty names after kissing a boy, who twisted the story and said more had happened. She was sexually assaulted,

22

which only added to her feelings of insecurity after being called nasty things. One of the people who hurt her was a girl she considered a friend. This friend became jealous of her and spread false rumors about Hannah. Another tape is addressed to an English teacher who was a guidance counselor at her school, whom she asked help from, expressing her feelings of depression and isolation, and he was not of any help to her.

Rhythm City

Mapula in Rhythm City goes through a situation where she is involved in a toxic relationship with a much older guy. They get into an argument because the boyfriend is not happy that Mapula went out with her friends. This guy makes her feel bad for it and uses the situation to his advantage by asking her to send him nude photos of herself. She’s left feeling like she needs to make it up to him and feels sending the pictures would fix their relationship. She eventually gives in and sends the pictures to him. Later in their relationship he starts to physically abuse her. She decides to stay in this relationship despite all that has happened because she feels she is “in love” with him, but the same person she cares about is the same person who hurts her. Hannah and Mapula are both regular teenagers who are going through a lot of situations you may be going through, or a friend is going through. Remember that there is always someone willing to help, regardless of whatever situation you’re going through….YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Things may look tough and difficult, but ga gonke go senyegela ruri. People who love you will help you and be there for you when you need it. They will always want the best for you and help you to achieve your dreams. The people who love you will NEVER purposefully hurt you and will support you and guide in the right paths. Respecting yourself enough to refuse

things you know are not good for you shows strength and shows that you are AWARE OF YOUR SELF WORTH. Remember that you are special and deserve the best. Don’t let external factors bring you down or deter you from your goals. You are strong, you are SKY!!

STUDY TIPS Studying can be a drag for us sometimes, especially since it takes up a lot of time and energy. Exams are creeping up on us so here are some ways to make studying a lot more enjoyable.

Organize your study space.

Having our stuff properly placed improves concentration levels and also reduces the stress from being in an untidy space. Your mind will be more at ease in an organized area, and this will also make studying SO much easier for you to do :)

To have the information you are studying properly sink in,

try reading out loud instead

of quietly doing it. The brain grasps content quicker when it is heard or spoken, so reading out loud will be very beneficial.

Form a study group with students you feel are serious about their work. Come together with concepts you do not understand and help each other out where you can. Discuss past exam papers together, and set exam questions for each other as well! The more the merrier, just as long as you all concentrate and reach your goal instead of distracting one another.

24

Another great studying tip (that many teachers use) is to practice on past exam papers. Remember, examiners do not come up with anything other that what is on the syllabus and these past papers will deepen your understanding of what kind of questions are asked, how they are asked and how you can answer them.

Listen, be engaged and take good notes

in class. If you participate in a discussion about a certain topic in class, you stand a better chance at grasping that concept and understanding what is being taught by your teacher. When you jot your notes down, make sure they are understandable and clear, so you do not get confused when you are home and trying to study alone.

Keep a glass of water around

and snack on brain food. What you put into your body will manifest on the outside, so make sure to keep hydrated and eat healthy foods e.g fish and eggs so you can be your best self, inside and out :)

Study Tips from a Top Achiever!

Mag •A• zine

KAGO MOTSOMA

I put a lot of thought into what might be the ultimate study tips that work for almost anyone and I came up with the following short but effective tips. Babies are very interesting - their firsts are usually just learnt from people surrounding them, say like their mom or just siblings. Of course crawling is a whole other thing! We must also tap into this by surrounding ourselves with people who are studying. People who are not necessarily better than us, just more hardworking. Very soon that will rub off on us and we will start covering our bases; taking down notes, finishing assignments and bringing the relevant material. This is how we improve. One of my goals this season is to improve my listening skills. Talking less is where we should start since most of the time we have an opinion we want to voice out, maybe the teacher said something interesting and instead of listening to what point they want to deliver we focus on the interesting part. In class absorb everything, when reading absorb everything. Then afterwards just pick out the important bits.

Take down all the notes, filter them and make relationships between them. I’m not saying be a secretary but if you can be then be one. Apart from not missing a lot of key terms you’re also improving your attention by doing some activity. Just like your laptop can fall asleep, so can humans if we are still for a while. I know for sure scribbling down important information during lessons, rewriting, rereading and beefing up your notes can take you above average. I love music and I sometimes study with music playing in the background, good music so that I don’t have to keep pausing my session just so I could press next ;) If music does it for you too then do so but remember to also break the pattern on some days and study without it. Choose wisely too; some music will be more distracting than helpful. Keep researching on other more interesting study skills: I heard about spaced repetition from a friend of mine about

a year ago. All you do is make flashcards and keep repeating going through them but spacing out intervals between. Say I have four sets for all the subjects I do. Go over them this week, next week, then skip two weeks before going over them again, then skip 3 weeks and go on and on increasing the weeks you skip each time. My teacher also suggested a 15-minute strategy when I was getting swallowed by two projects in Form 5. All I had to do was spend 15 minutes on each subject every night. I usually went over previous lesson notes in preparation for tomorrow’s lesson and doing some multiple choice. It really helped. So good luck, and tell us your personal favourite study tips on the skygirlsbw Facebook page!

Sessions! i Dikgaka, This winter, The SKY Girls team along with Sad ted 40 Marang Molosiwa and Samantha Mogwe visi sessions in schools all across Botswana. We held 2 hour you guys! each school and had SO MUCH FUN meeting na but in We would love to visit every school in Botswa here are case we didn’t manage to come to yours yet, team! some photos and tips from the celebs and SKY

How to Say NO!

One of the activities we did during the school sessions was practicing saying NO. Every SKY Girl has defined her sures and shapos, right? But do you know exactly how you would say NO to your shapos? The SKY team, Sadi, Samantha and Marang had these suggestions. Try them yourself with friends, and you will be prepared for anything :)

• • • • •

Recognise that you are different, e.g. ‘no it’s cool, you do that but I’m not keen’ Straight out say ‘no thank you’ and change the topic of conversation Say ‘ke shapo ka yone’ Explain that it’s just not your thing Act pretend offended “Don’t you know me?! I don’t do that!”

What other ways can you think of to say NO to something? As long as you For example, if smoking is your #1 choose a way to refuse your shapos shapo and your friend offers you a cigarette, you could: that suits your personality and feels • Make a joke to make the situation natural to you, you’ll be OK :) less tense

Tips on how to create your own Personal branding means thinking carefully about the way people see you. Branding is important because it expresses your personality and values to the world. If you become known for something good, it can help you in later life. Here are some tips on how to create your own personal brand.

28

Invest in your talents

Identify your uniqueness and your strengths and use them to the max to work in your favour. You need to start investing in your talent - we don’t mean investing money, we mean investing time, effort and love :) If you are good at dancing, singing, public speaking, debate, sports, anything really, invest in it!! You can use your talent to make an extra buck for yourself and either save, buy something nice for yourself or invest it again. If you are a dancer, you can join a local dance crew. Engage with other people in your field, learn and collaborate with them. That’s how you grow.

What you post on social media stays in the internet FOREVER

Social media is fun, but what we tend to forget is that ANYTHING we put out into the internet, stays there forever and can be traced back. We should be careful about what we post on our social media platforms because it can make or break you, whether currently or in future. Remember that one day you will be an adult and getting into the working class. The bosses today also check what you post on social media, to see if you write positive uplifting things or negative degrading things. Know who you are and stay true to yourself Create value-packed content for your audience to engage with.

For people who want to be in the creative arts, creating content is essential to building your brand. You can take videos and post them on your social media platforms, that way people are aware of your talents and this creates more exposure for yourself and your brand. You can post your videos on YouTube, Instagram and on Facebook for more exposure and create a page for whatever It is you want to do. For example, if you want to post videos of your dance routines, you can create a page just for that and post on the page so that people are aware of your craft and can easily access your content whenever they want to.

When we look at other people’s lives, especially on social media, we tend to feel they are living a better, more luxurious or a fun life compared to yours. Babes, you may not have the nicest clothes or the latest phone but remember you have a bright future. You can work towards a future you want and be able to buy yourself whatever you want and build the future you that you want. All you need to do is work hard, stay true to yourself, avoid things that would derail you from your goals and you will be just fine.

Be Yourself

Find your own style. You don’t have to do what everyone else is doing and by following the crowd. Use your style and uniqueness to attract the people and jobs that you desire. Don’t be afraid to show off who you really are. People can tell if you’re faking it so, just be the best you. Building a personal brand takes time and effort, but it’s worth it. The need for a personal brand will continue to increase and it evolves, so you need to know what’s in and trending for you to adjust how you post content but still staying true to yourself. It’s the one thing that no one can take away from you, and it can follow you throughout your career and life.

We’re talking puberty and dealing with a teenage body and we have tips for you during this difficult time of your life. Puberty isn’t easy, particularly if you go through it before your friends. It’s an enormous amount of change in a very little period of time and change isn’t always easy. Your body goes through growth spurts and this may cause you to feel a little different. During puberty, you’ll develop new curves, more hair and your period starts. You may notice that you smell different or feel moodier than you used to – and on top of that, boys may look at you differently. Worry not, SKY is here to help you deal with this change.

Your skin changes a great deal during this stage, you may or may not develop spots. It’s important to know that everyone’s skin is different, so it’s best to try a few different products until you find one that works for you. Be conscious of acne medications that dry your skin out, because in this case you may need to apply a moisturizer as well. Popping pimples can make your skin problems worse, so definitely avoid doing this.

32

Be prepared for your first period. Getting your first period can be very frightening, but it’s a lot less of a hassle when you are ready for it. It’s a great idea to keep a clean pair of underwear and a pad in your bag incase you get your period at school. Be sure to change your pad often (at least once every four hours) to stay clean and fresh and keep away from infections. Another change that occurs is that your chest develops during puberty, so it would be a good idea for you to get a bra as it will provide you with support and will be very helpful during sports and exercise.

Body hair g rows aro more aro und your und your pubic are puber ty. a as and Most g irls r ms and legs as well dur c that app h o o s e ing to shave ears, but an you do n don’t wa ot have to y body hair nt to. In about this issue usted before go vesting in ing ahea help kee a g o o d d a p bad bo nti-persp dy odor a irant w il way and l more com help you feel for table.

Most importantly, find someone to talk to. If you are feeling uncomfortable about the changes that are happening to your body, it may help to talk to someone who has gone through these changes before. You can talk to your friends about these issues as well but remember that they are going through the same circumstances as you are, so they may not know much about it either. Do not compare yourself to anyone else, we are different individuals and reach certain stages and develop differently.
