To inspire means to make someone feel like they want to do something and that they can actually do it. Most people think that inspiration comes and goes, and though this may be true, as SKY Girls we are inspired by our sures and shapos which help us to stay true to ourselves! Ever feel like you have no idea how to be or stay inspired? Here are a few ways ;)

SKY

Mag •A• zine

1

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE PEOPLE Our environments have a great impact on how we live our lives. The friends and family members that you usually interact with can feed your inspiration or kill it. It is important to ensure that your friends are constantly keeping you in good and positive spirits. For example, if you want to become the first female president of Botswana, you need friends who will cheer you on and tell you to keep working hard so that this dream becomes a reality.

2

4

REMIND YOURSELF OF YOUR PASSION

#GIRLPOWER!

SPEND SOME TIME ALONE

3

It may sound insane to “remind” yourself of your passion but it helps to keep you inspired. Once you find ways to keep your passion burning, you can easily reference why you started doing what you wish to do. So if you are an aspiring singer and you’re feeling uninspired, make sure you listen to your favourite artists to remind yourself again of why you loved singing in the first place!

Sometimes when you are feeling uninspired it is helpful to take a little break from outside influence. This could be taking a walk and attempting to clear your mind. Not only will this help you to align your thoughts with whatever task you have or the goal you wish to achieve, but you could possibly stumble upon something unexpected that will inspire you. Spending time alone should not however lead you to overthink and getting frustrated about your lack of inspiration.

RELAX

RESEARCH

We get so caught up in life that we are often too stressed to find inspiration, even though it is all around us. If you are attempting to write a poem or a song and you cannot find the right words in your head, simply relax. Stop trying to write. Take a break, watch a series or read a book, and then get back to writing. It helps to relax because you can easily get back to your inspired mood. Sometimes your best thoughts come to you when you’re not actively thinking about them!

5

This does not mean any intensive research needs to be done but boBabes, you need to find people who inspire you. This means finding women in the field or with the talent you would like to pursue and finding out how they got to be successful. It is always encouraging to know that your dreams and goals are achievable because someone else has achieved them. It is inspiring to watch interviews or other people explaining about their passions and it could greatly keep you INSPIRED!

WHAT’S IN? WHAT’S BACK? It’s IN!

PLEATED SHORTS Pleated shorts have been one huge fashion trend recently, and this is because they look crisp, neat and are also very comfortable. They are also perfect for any occasion, from a casual to a dressier event or outing. To get this look, get yourself a pair of pleated shorts (either online or at a local store) and pair it with a v-neck vest or blouse.

CROP TOPS

EMBROIDERED DENIM Embroidery has come a long way since the sixties flower child look and has topped the charts once more because of its simple yet sophisticated look. Ranging from roses to wording, this look is super cute and will make you look effortlessly cool ;) stores like Mr Price have this style in store, but it is also possible (and more fun!) to sew on your own embroidery :)

We’re leaving these BEHIND!

The crop top made its grand entrance into the fashion scene in the 1940s and was mostly worn by belly dancers. After falling off the radar in the early 2000s, they have now made their comeback and plenty of girls in Botswana enjoy rocking this stylish look. Almost all local stores have some available, but just like the embroidered denim, it is possible to make your own with an old T-shirt or even tights!

FAKE MUD JEANS These are cute for a Halloween or dress-up party, but they generally do not look good to walk around in. They give the impression that the last time your jeans had a wash was 2 months ago, and this is not what you would want to be remembered for!

WHAT’S OUT? CROCHET TOPS These have completely taken over, and you will spot many girls rocking them at events such as Chillstep and Jam for Brunch. They are the perfect casual-wear and are super comfortable and fashionable too. Crochet tops are actually very easy to make, but if you prefer to buy one, there are plenty of local designers that have them in stock, so go on to the internet or Facebook and check them out ☺

Our 2018 Trend Forecast in the last issue was so popular, we’re bringing you another one :)t Get the scoop on what’s hot and what’s not, right here!

THE PLATINUM PIXIE It has been crazy hot lately, so many girls and women out there have opted for this look. It is simple yet stylish and is also very easy to attain and maintain. And as mentioned, there won’t be any hair hanging in your face or on your shoulders, which helps so much with the hot temperatures we have been experiencing. If you like to be bold and stand out, this is the look for you!

CHUNKY SNEAKERS These chunky sneakers have come back into the light after being spotted on the world’s biggest influencers such as Kim and Kourtney Kardashian. They are very comfortable, come in so many different colors and can also be worn with numerous different outfits. Labels such as Balenciaga have also started producing this product and its popularity is still on the rise.

CLEAR PANEL MOM JEANS These jeans look very cute but unfortunately, they cause a lot of heat to be generated by the knees and sweaty kneecaps are super uncomfortable. The plastic also tends to become foggy-looking, ew.

Vintage looks that are back AGAIN!

APPLYING MAKEUP WITH UNCONVENTIONAL TOOLS Tons of videos showcasing girls using the craziest of objects such as knives to apply/blend their makeup were all over the internet recently. These can actually be very dangerous to use and may also cause skin breakouts and health problems, therefore it is best to use proper utensils to do so #safetyfirst

r o t s e f i l e Tru Being Different Should Never Stop

You From Getting What You Want

My Name is Chipo Ruth Ncube, a youthful soul of 18 years old. I come from Zimbabwe in Gweru but I grew up in Botswana in a town called Lobatse where I did my Primary and Secondary education. I am studying Broadcasting and Journalism at Limkokwing University and part time working as a SKY Girl radio presenter. Growing up in a foreign land is quite interesting and a bit of a challenge. Learning new cultures has always been a thrill for me because I get to experience the amazing ways of how Batswana live, like their type of food, music, dress code (which I’ve become very familiar with) and I’m yet to experience more. Having lived here since I was 4 years old made the norms and morals of Batswana my norms and morals also. I thank my family and good friends for always being supportive of my dreams and encouraging me to do better. Fitting in has never been my thing, I always did everything my way and hoped for the best and surprisingly it’s been working out for me. Botswana is a very welcoming country that believes in diversification allowing people like me to get the opportunity to unleash and better my talents in the media industry. My goal in life is to become an international television and radio presenter. At the age of 17, I worked hard and managed to become a motivational representative of the SKY girls working as their radio presenter. I am glad that being of different nationality and speaking a different home language never made me doubt my capabilities in accomplishing my dreams when growing up. I have always been that free-spirited girl who believes that if you work hard for something, you will receive everything you deserve from it and to never give up. I know that greater things are coming my way and I’m determined to work hard and reach my goals. I will forever live by the verse that says Philippians 4 vs. 13, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

WildFLOWER

My name is Bonolo Raowang and I am a passionate and driven 21 year old female who is the owner and director of Wildflower Promotional Agency. Wildflower Promotional Agency is a marketing and advertising company that offers services such as the provision of hostesses, promo ladies, ushers, ticket agents as well as social media management and promotions.

I was inspired to start the company with the directive to empower the youth targeting young ladies to find work, especially with the kind of economic climate we have here at home in Botswana plagued with such high rates of unemployment amongst the youth. With the type of work we do, we are fortunate enough to interact with potential future employers as the ladies engaged are either still studying at University or fresh out of it which gives them the opportunity to network, start and nurture their careers. At Wildflower we also encourage the ladies to pursue their passions as well as start-up businesses of their own, because we believe that employment creation is the best route to go. This not only empowers an individual personally but also financially which in this society we live in today goes a long way. The ‘Wildflowers’ as the ladies are endearingly known are here to prove that women can be both beautiful and hardworking at the same time. We also exist as an organisation to prove that women can work together and in turn this elevates all of them higher to reach their true potential. Through the journey of starting up Wildflower I also discovered my entrepreneurial abilities and this in turn has helped me grow profoundly as an individual. I urge all the ladies who might be wondering how to start something, to start small, set little targets and with that eventually you will achieve your goal. Always remember that big things are a compilation of smaller things. Stay beautiful and work hard.

Hi girl, thanks for messaging us! It’s great that you want to inspire your peers, we can always lift each other up and motivate each other! One way you can truly inspire people is to be a shining example of a kind and confident person. People will naturally warm to you and will want to be just like you :) If you want to take it a step further, why not volunteer to give a 10-minute inspirational talk? You could address a class in your school, or even your whole school in assembly! You could even find another organisation, such as a volunteer centre or church. If you choose to give inspirational talks, follow these tips: 1. Plan it out on paper first and make sure to practice. It is easy to panic and accidentally start rambling. So keep your notes clear and avoid going off topic :) 2. Practice speaking in front of a friend, so that they can advise you on any improvements, as well as giving you extra confidence! 3. People love to hear about others’ experiences. Speak as much from your own experience as possible, talking about what has happened to you, how you felt about it, and how you reacted to it and were changed by it! 4. People also prefer to hear concrete things. That means, instead of saying ‘don’t be swayed from your goal’, instead you could say ‘promise yourself every day, out loud, that you will achieve your goal’. That’s a great practical tip :) Mainly, remember that inspiration is best when it comes from someone who truly works towards being a nice, strong person. Actions speak louder than words, so get yourself out there and do GREAT THINGS! Good luck!

My love, apart from feelings, a relationship consists of respect, consideration and commitment among others. A guy who truly loves you will not force you or suggest something they know will make you uncomfortable. The guy will generally want to protect you by trying as much as possible to not hurt you. This guy Is only thinking of himself and how he benefits, which is selfish. That shows a lack of respect because he even says that he has three other girls. If that is true, he is disrespecting you by having many girlfriends. If it is not true, he is trying to hurt your feelings so that you will give him what he wants, and that is also disrespectful. If he loved you he should have respected the decision you made the first time you told him that you are young. Don’t give in to his pressure. Tell him honestly that if he does not respect your decisions, you will not stay in the relationship. You can focus on yourself, enjoy life and learn from your experiences. You will meet a guy who will treat you like the queen you are. <3 Much love.

A

Hi love <3 That’s very sad hey. With friendships you need to understand that individuals grow and develop new interests. What you can do is approach her and ask her gore what is going on with your friendship and ask questions to understand her. Then calmly tell her how you feel and communicate very clearly about what you have observed and how it has made you feel. DON’T make her feel attacked because she will get defensive and it will turn into a fight. Many friends actually drift in and out of each other’s lives, and that’s OK. Make sure you are focusing on making new friendships as well as trying to maintain your existing ones. Stay positive and remember to enjoy life to the fullest. All the best!

Glowing is not all about looking good but feeling good too. It’s a lot of work to take care of you. Eating right, having enough rest, keeping good company, and slaying in your own right is key. The important thing is to have balance in your life. Have a balanced schedule for studying, for friends, for your hobbies, and for rest. Take care of the physical, psychological, spiritual, nutritional and emotional parts of your life. Here are some tips on how maintain your glow hunnay…

18

1 Physical glow

The first impression people get from you is how you look. It’s not just about the products you use or what you’re wearing. Exercising, bathing, playing a sport, and having enough rest are good for your physical glow. A lot of physical glow shows through your face, so take care of your skin. Don’t pop your pimples, drink lots and lots of water, wash off makeup before going to bed, never smoke (it dulls your skin and kills your glow), smile often. Showing confidence is another way to floss your glow; confidence in yourself, in your look, and in what you do. Keep your head held high and walk that walk sunshine.

2 Psychological glow

Keep friends that bring out the best in you. Being stress free from drama and maintaining your mental health is important. Remember, avoiding drama also means you shouldn’t create it. Know your limits. Set a schedule for your studies and refresh by doing something you enjoy.

Mag •A• zine

3 Spiritual glow

This is important for anyone who believes in something, whether supernatural or not. Feed your spirit with a positive lifestyle. If you believe there’s a God, keep learning and understanding your role in that journey. Doing good unto others and yourself is one way to feed your soul with positivity.

Emotional glow

When you get hurt, disappointed, or let down by someone or something, feel free to talk to someone about it. Crying is not weakness; it is an important aspect of life to release pain through tears. Protecting yourself from getting hurt is inevitable, but you can learn to persevere. Surround yourself with friends who will support you when you feel down. Let go of people who constantly hurt you or bring you down.

5 Nutritional glow

They say you are what you eat. Metaphorically, this is somewhat true. What you ingest will eventually show its course on the outside. Eat right, drink more water and of course stay smoke-free. Eating right includes less intake of sweet substances, having more vegetables in your meal than meat, and drinking at least 1.5 litres of water in a day. And don’t do this alone; help your friends live a healthy and happy life too.

Charity describes herself as a go-getter, a very ambitious and driven young lady. Ke sure ka travelling, fashion & style, and good food! Ke shapo ka smoking, lack of direction and laziness. “I am inspired by people who are passionate about pursuing their dreams, no matter how difficult it can be. Life is about experiences and living to the fullest. I have big dreams for myself and my desire to experience these dreams keeps me driven and inspired to work harder. My dreams give me fuel to persevere and bring it all to fruition. Nothing will stop me or hold me back from pursing my goals and dreams. That’s my greatest inspiration.”

Tumie is a law student, fashion blogger, fashion stylist & digital entrepreneur. She is a do-er, a dreamer, a force and a ray of sunshine Ke sure ka reading, working out (gym) and fashion. Ke shapo ka smoking, negative energy/vibes, pretenders. “I am inspired by my love for independence, which is why I work hard, to be able to be independent. I am inspired by possibility, i.e. anything is possible, you can be anything and do almost anything you put your mind to. Look at me, I am a student by morning, by afternoon I am a stylist to my clients and in the evenings I work on my proposals & work as a digital entrepreneur. Lastly to a great extent I inspire myself; every day I juggle a hectic schedule and load but somehow I always get things done.”

24

for sure that I will just stick to being a lawyer, I think I will be content with that. In terms of being a fashion blogger, it derived from my love for fashion and pictures, also because people always used to ask me where I got my outfits and what inspired me wear them the way I did so I figured a blog would be a fun & informative platform to showcase my love for fashion.

SKY Girl Lerato Baruti listed Tumie as an inspiration to her, and got the chance to ask her 3 questions!

How do you stay healthy and happy 24/7 even though the world is cruel? I am my own little ray of sunshine, I try to make the best out every situation. I am also a practical person. I have learnt to accept and move on from things/people/situations that I cannot change, as I believe that fate did not intend on keeping them in my life. I protect my space from negative energy. Because of the nature of my job I interact with a lot of people however I sense energies very well, if my gut feels off about someone or something, I distance myself. Lastly I pray, it keeps me sane.

What inspired you to study law and also be a fashion blogger? I have always wanted to be a judge, from a very young age that’s all I said to my family, and then I grew up and learnt you have to study law before you can become a judge. I now know

If I asked you to go for a vacation with me to Bora Bora & Ibiza just to thank you for your existence what would be your reaction? I would probably cry, hug you and rush to go pack my bags!!

Being able to pull yourself together in the midst of a storm is the most powerful thing.”

SKY Girl Karyn Kidron listed Khumo as an inspiration to her, and got the chance to ask her 3 questions! What is the best thing that has ever happened to you? To be able to wake up everyday and go do what I love, which is radio and work towards building my NGO ‘WHO AM I’. Whom do you look up to? I am moved to become one of those women who someone, somewhere will say, “because Sadi did, I can.” There are women who inspire me like Connie Ferguson and Leloba Seitshiro who I feel like have broke barriers down proving that even that woman from Botswana is more than credible to stand out on global stages. I am inspired by the girl with a dream. The one

who is putting her fears aside, putting all discouragement aside and working on making it a reality.”

SKY Girl Kesego listed Sadi as an inspiration to her, and got the chance to ask her 3 interview questions! What is your motto? If something costs you your peace, it is too expensive. Who is your role model? Martha Kgosidintsi. My grandmother. She was an amazing woman who taught my sisters and me about the importance of being aware of the power and influence one has as a woman. She took part in groundbreaking activities which I am proud to say still exist. What makes you believe in yourself? God. I live with the notion that I am on this earth because I have a purpose. I have a mandate I should deliver on which isn’t written but through prayer and meditation I find the boldness and confidence to go out and conquer. I also have a great support system. My amazing family who if and when I feel like I lack confidence, always seem to find a way to encourage me.

Meet the new

Katleho Modise

Age: 16 | Homeschooled Sures: Ambition, creativity, determination Shapos: Peer pressure, fake friends, bad makeup

30

Katleho’s competition entry: “If I had five minutes to speak on radio with an audience of teenagers, I would speak of self-branding which I think is a very important part of life and every career path that one chooses. I think as teenagers we live by the notion ‘YOLO - You Only Live Once’ forgetting that every single thing we do reflects on our future in every single way.

I think we as teenagers need to be taught how to brand ourselves from such a tender age, and even more so for us in third world countries. This is because unlike those in first world countries, our countries work with morals and Botho which means everything you do, say and post will have an effect on whatever you choose to do in future.”

In January of 2018, SKY ran its find ‘Voice of SKY ’ competition to the e, Liv SKY for ters sen new pre age teen only radio show for BW from girls, on RB2 every Saturday . 12.3 0 – 1pm , to We asked you, the SKY Nation ut abo talk ld tell us what you wou to io rad on s ute min if you had 5 address the SKY Nation .

and Well, over 100 0 people voted, of ces Voi new r you , here they are SKY:

Tsamma’s competition entry: “For five minutes on radio I would talk about feeding one’s focus and starving distractions in order to achieve the different goals we all have, as well as bringing up and supporting each other’s works because we are all we have to get to the top. For example our local artists only have us to get to the continental if not international level, they can’t do that if we as young Batswana don’t support them and give them the national platform they need to get to the top. But all talk and no action is just gibberish and a waste of everybody’s time, so to top it off I’d invite a few upcoming youngsters who really have a good thing going but aren’t as well known by the public in order to help them market themselves, but this would be a little bit later, after the introductory five minutes”

ho and Don’t miss Katle t SKY Tsamma presen ay on Live every Saturd RB2 from 12 .30!

George, I feel a lot more inspired already. I’m going to take your advice too, and listen to music Oh yes. Don’t worry, sometimes we can overthink things and it blocks our creativity. Why don’t you take a nice long walk to clear your mind?
