Hi SKY Nation! I’m Kelello, It’s an honour to be writing the editor’s note of this SKY GIRLS magazine edition.

Growing up and not having an older sister to look up to and ask for advice from, I had the SKY Girls Community to lean on in times of need, and my mom of course. I am grateful that I am able to be a part of something that played an important role in my life from the time I was thirteen and moulded the person I am today, 6 years later. Over the years, I have drawn courage and confidence from the articles published in the SKY Magazine and I was introduced to my personal heroes through this platform like Tumie Nthutang. I hope that as you read this edition, you are inspired in all the amazing ways that I was and still am. I hope you know that you are capable of more than you can imagine and that your heroes make you realise that through their stories. I also hope you know that you have the power to shape your world in whatever way you want. You are strong, beautiful and capable. With that being said, this magazine issue is all about the heroes in our lives and us finding the heroism within ourselves. As we say, not all heroes wear capes. Please enjoy awesome articles such as ‘a hero in my life’ ‘My 2020’, ‘have a “super period” as well as fun and exciting games. I would also like to thank everyone who contributed to this edition of the SKY Girls edition. Thanks for showing every young girl and boy reading this, that their dreams are possible! With that I hope you enjoy. #staytruetoyourself

Knowledge is power. The one thing no one can take away from you is your knowledge. You can never go wrong with studying, finishing school, and being educated. Whether you want to be a model, a fashion designer, an Olympian, a professional football player, a musician, a business owner, it’s always good to be educated especially looking at the circumstances of growing up in Botswana with less opportunity to be recognized. Re sure ka our books. Reading is cool.

Expand the SKY Sistahood

Mental Health

Re shapo ka stress. Re shapo ka acting fine when we’re not. And re shapo ka making other people feel terrible. Mental health is as important as your physical and emotional health. This year we’re looking forward to taking care of ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally, psychologically, everybody! We don’t allow negative people bring us down, and we also gotta be careful of what we say about other people. Re sure ka a sistahood that looks out for each other whether it’s about school hardships, boyfriend problems, money struggles, or even beauty horrors! We need to look out for each other and protect one another ladies.

Follow your Dreams

Re sure ka reaching our dreams and working hard to make sure they come true. Whether you aspire to be a musician, a scientist, an actor, a fashion designer, a CEO, or even the President of Botswana, re sure ka wena! The journey may seem long and far-fetched, but if you set your goals, stay disciplined, work hard, and build yourself without getting distracted, it’s all worth it. Remember, it doesn’t all happen in 1 day, these things take time. Invest your time and energy, even resources such as money in developing your dreams and achieving them. If you fail and fail, don’t give up, get back up and keep working at it. Successful people have also faced challenges and setbacks in life but they are successful because they did not give up. Also, stay true to your own dreams, no need to try to be someone else.

The sistahood grows every day and we’re always happy to welcome new sisters to the gang. In 2020, we look forward to hearing new sures and new shapos from each SKY girl across Botswana. If there’s a girl you know that wants to join the sistahood, welcome her with open arms. Let her know what we’re all about and make sure she takes the pledge to stay true to her sures and shapos.

Try new things

Re sure ka breaking out of our shells and discovering ourselves. It’s good to try new things that add value to your life, whether it’s a new hobby you’re interested in trying, a sports club you wanna join, DIY projects, or a new year’s resolution you want to achieve, we say go for it girl! It’s good for your mental health and stress release to be involved in extra-curricular activities that interest you. Things you enjoy and can also help you grow as an individual. This may also help you find your people, the people you can get along with because you share similar interests. Leave fear behind, re shapo ka yone.

Lastly, I have to mention the biggest academic inspiration I have ever known. It has to be Patricia Moiteelasilo. She is a 24-year-old Bachelor of Finance graduate from the University of Botswana and just started work at Absa. I always felt disadvantaged by growing up in the ghetto and going to underrated schools until we met at form 1, yes I know its been ages! We are from the same background and she taught me how to be happy with my own achievements and to never ever compare myself to anyone or feel I am disadvantaged by anything because only I got the power. Her passion for excelling academically always inspired me to do better, to date she stills does because eventually people fall out of love for school, but with her it is never the case. She is the reason I want to pursue masters and doctorates, you know how the hierarchy goes like.

I couldn’t believe it! All my life I thought I was an ordinary teenage girl. But then I discovered I had superpowers. Let me explain… Keke’s my name. I am sixteen years old. I am a student at Mogoditshane Senior School. I have 1 friend and I’m probably the biggest weirdo at school. My birthday is on the 24th of July, a day I used to call the worst day of my life. Wonder why? Well the answer is easy; it’s a day that made me miss my mother more than any other. My mother died when I was three years old; so, I can hardly remember her. And what’s the point of living without her, a half of me? I woke up early that unwanted morning, 0600 am, 24/07/19. My big brother Kevin lives away from home, in Phakalane. He always video calls me, about every two weeks. So, he was the first to wish me a happy sweet 16. Soon after that, my father tried to cheer me up by singing to me and cooking me a nice hot breakfast. For a split second, I felt okay. Well the second passed; I have to get back to my normal routine. I put on my uniform and went off to wait for the school bus. On the way, I started to feel a little lightheaded. “Maybe I had a cold or something,” I thought to myself. Still I kept on walking. I arrived just on time. When I got in, there was a soft buzzing sound. I figured it was because there were a few people who were chatting but then a strange thing happened. I started hearing loud voices in my head. As I passed each person, the voices got stronger and stronger, along with it came excruciating pain. I threw myself down on my usual seat at the back of the bus. Was I going crazy? Well I sure thought so because this isn’t normal. What the hell was going on in my head?

The voices kept getting louder as more students came into the bus. For some reason, it was like I could read their minds. Actually… that’s right. I COULD hear the thoughts of everyone in the bus. I was terrified - literally soaking in my own sweat. As if overhearing Thuto plan to eat niknaks with peanut butter was not stressful enough, a group of girls who did not like me got in. Angel, the leader of the clique, had a piece of cake in her hand. A birthday cake… And was heading straight for me. As she took steps towards me, the voices in my head started chanting “SMASH HER FACE WITH THE CAKE.” I looked around and saw heads turned towards me but not a single lip was moving. It was then that I realised that the voices were of the kids around me. I started freaking out, closed my eyes and pictured myself in my secret hide out. When I opened my eyes, there I was, standing in the abandoned treehouse just across my house. I pinched myself on the arm to check if I was dreaming. Nope. This was real. It felt like the world was spinning around. “I can teleport too?!” I mistakenly shouted out loud. Accepting that I had a superpower was already giving me trouble. Wrapping my head around two seemed almost impossible. I ran home to find the house beautifully decorated with balloons written “Happy Sweet Sixteen” hanging from the ceiling. My dad jumped out of the kitchen and yelled “SURPRISE!” I immediately broke down and started sputtering out everything that had happened to me that day. When I looked in his face, he looked unbelievably calm, as if he was hearing someone telling him about the weather. He then went on to tell me that everyone in my family has superpowers - him, Kevin, and my mom too. “I didn’t want you to find out yet. Without the powers, you’re my little girl and I can protect you from the world. I couldn’t protect you from your mum’s death but I guess I can show you how to use your powers to protect yourself,” he breathed out. “So this is real?” “Yes it is kiddo. And you seem to have gotten a little piece of your mum in you. She was a master teleporter.” “She was…” I cried out, as my dad wrapped his arms around me. “Happy birthday sweetie. She would’ve been so proud of you.” From that day, everything changed, I feel like a whole new person. I don’t feel worthless like before. Life has purpose now. I spend my days helping the hopeless and making rescues, you know, basic superhero stuff. :)

We have some really dope inspirational quotes said by smart, beautiful, hardworking women we adore. From Mzansi’s very own Queen Zozibini to the youngest film executive producer Marsai Martin who co-produced and acted in her own movie at only 14 years old. We also have a spotlight from one of the biggest household names today, the one and only Meghan Markle who is just a ray of sunshine and such a force to be reckoned with. We hope their voices will inspire you in so many ways to stay true to yourself.

About boys Kindness is the No. 1 quality I look for in a man. You can see in how he treats anyone - from a CEO to a housekeeper - and it’s a reflection of how nice a guy is. Funniness and confidence come after that... When a guy approaches me, it’s fantastic if he can make me laugh.

About Fashion Women who have understood fashion and style for so long have always known it’s not about having more pieces. I’ve always shopped on the sale rack, and I’ve always been the girl flipping through the hangers trying to find the best deal.

Feminism “You can be a woman who wants to look good and still stand up for the equality of women. There’s no uniform for feminism; you are a feminist exactly the way you are.”

Self care “You need to know that you’re enough—a mantra that has now ingrained itself so deeply within me that not a day goes by without hearing it chime in my head. That five pounds lost won’t make you happier, that more makeup won’t make you prettier,. You are complete with or without a partner. You are enough just as you are.”

On girls “When girls are given the right tools to succeed, they can create incredible futures, not only for themselves but also for those around them.” “Women make up more than half of the world’s population and potential, so it is neither just nor practical for their voices, for our voices, to go unheard at the highest levels of decision-making. The way that we change that, in my opinion, is to mobilize girls and women to see their value as leaders, and to support them in these efforts.”

ABOUT CONFIDENCE I think so much of what we learn when we get older is being comfortable in our own skin and learning what looks good, and not being so trend-centric.

We all know that taking part in sports is good for the body and the mind! And of course it’s always good to celebrate the achievements of others. So here are just a few of our favourite sports superstars of the moment, we are seriously in awe of their skills!

Remember this name – it will be associated with an incomparable sports legend in the years to come. Kenosi recently made history by being the first female boxer to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. She was not only the first female Motswana boxer to qualify for the games, but the first female boxer in the entire world to do so. This was after an astounding victory of 5 - 0 against Morocco’s Bertal Widad, at the African Olympic Qualifiers, in the Featherweight division. With a tweet praising her of a job well done from the Office of the President, Sadie can rest assured she has the nation’s support.
