Hey SKY Nation, We are beyond excited to be introducing this special issue of the SKY GIRLS BW magazine as your four editors WHOOP WHOOP!!

Of course the theme of this issue is #FunTimes as that is what you can always expect from us four, haha. It is the festive season and we are all done with the stress and pressure of exams and can finally relax and hang out with our friends.

This is what this issue is centred around, which is why you will find

the hilarious story of our SKY sister Tinashe, our covergirl for this issue.

A SKY 2019 trend forecast will get you ready for the new year, fun activities to do in your spare time are included in this issue and also cheap/ free beauty tricks for you to explore this festive season.

It was a normal day at school during our exams. I had done the usual stuff - got up in the morning and put on my uniform, travelled to school and revised with my friend for the forthcoming exam. My friends Rona and Gorata were somewhere around the school, I guess they were studying for the exam, or rather calming themselves down... We wrote the first exam and I literally felt drained and tired out my senses and really hungry.

I met up with Rona and Gorata and told them I was really hungry, Gorata chipped in and started to imagine food we really can’t afford. I wasn’t one for oily fast foods cooked by ladies outside our school because I had to keep my oily skin under control, but today was just an exception... the hunger I felt that day was an emergency. We sat at one bench and counted all the coins we had collectively before having to buy 4 big fatcakes, two packets of fries and a drink for each one of us... and we indulged!

The silence that filled the room, as we sat there and fed our tummies... hardly breathing, forgetting the fact that we only had about an hour’s break before the next exam, which was maths.

For the first time in a long time I ate like there was no tomorrow!

My friend Gorata finally broke the silence and said “I am too full” and gave up her fatcake half eaten. I related so badly to her because I was too full to even keep my button buttoned up!

I sat there looking hopelessly satisfied. Rona looked at me and broke into laughter: “bogurl! Dimpa tsa lona ekae tsa kgomo e le pregas!” and we all broke into laughter only that I was too full to be able to laugh... Every movement of mine was slow. Gorata was seated on the classroom floor... breathing and digesting not only the food but the fact that we are full!

Most of us have at least a month of free time over festive, and while it’s fun to do absolutely nothing, we could also spend some of that time doing something that will benefit us as we move into the new year. Here are some ideas for ways you can develop yourself over the holidays, and begin 2019 as a healthier or more rounded person!

Eating right The festive period doesn’t have to be a time of stuffing your face full of delicious unhealthy things! (Well, maybe just a bit). You could spend this holiday learning how to cook healthy meals and getting into a routine of eating healthy for 2019. You’ll feel great from the inside out, and will find you have more energy. Concentrate on eating protein, wholegrains and lots of fruit and vegetables. Try making grilled chicken on a bed of spinach with tomatoes and avo, then drizzle with olive oil and lemon – it’s simple, delicious and will help you glow.

Exercising Yes you’re relaxing after working hard for a year at school, and yes it’s hot in December. But it’s still a great idea to exercise over the holidays – rather than falling into a ‘sleep all morning’ routine, it will wake you up ready to enjoy the festivities to the fullest. Find a friend to buddy up with, and you could hold yoga, aerobics, or dance sessions together 3 times a week. Play your favourite tunes to hype you up and give you energy for longer. Trust us, you will really notice the difference when it’s ‘back to the real world’ in 2019.

MIND Reading Getting lost in a good book is a great way to unwind and de-stress after a hectic year, and the long holidays are the perfect time to read a novel with fewer distractions. Instead of picking up a random book and hoping you will enjoy it, why not ask your friends and relatives for a recommendation? This way, you can pretty much guarantee you will enjoy it, plus you will be able to discuss the book with someone afterwards. As well as being good for relaxation, reading teaches you all sorts of things, from learning how to identify well with others to increasing creativity.

Learning a new skill December is probably the only time of year when you can actually dedicate a lot of time towards something, yet many of us accidentally waste the holiday and only realize once January has arrived! So this December, consider choosing a skill that you would like to learn, and then make it happen. You could ask your mom if she can teach you to cook, you could ask your friends to teach you how to dance, how to write poetry, how to do hair and makeup, the possibilities are endless. All we know is you will not regret the investment :)

2019

Trend Forecast Hairstyles

There has been a huge increase in the number of women choosing to rock their natural hair. If 2018 was anything to go by, then 2019 will definitely be one for the books. However, in the next year we predict more creative looks for “protective hairstyles”. Protective hairstyles have traditionally been ways to tie your natural hair when you go to bed so that it doesn’t tangle or break overnight. However, it seems more ladies find it easier to use the latest trends as protective styles or on days when they don’t #FreeTheFro! Colourful braids will probably not make it into 2019, but colourful wigs seem to be increasing and of course the faux locs and neat and stylish cornrows will definitely be rocked in 2019. This is of course not losing sight of the biggest trend that will still be relevant in 2019 which is the Natural Crown!

Music

Our local artists have brought us great music this 2018 and we are expecting even more next year. What continues to stand out is the fusion of a global sound that is localized and made to sound authentic. For example, Han-C has managed to captivate us with an original African sound which is upbeat but also contemporary this year. Additionally, the likes of Mpho Sebina and Thato Jessica have proven that RNB or Soulful Music is not limited to the Western Culture but can indeed be localized. Motlha has also been a pivotal example this year in illustrating that Setswana and African beats can be internationalized without losing the essence of our beloved country.

2019 should be an awesome year for music with new artists stepping into the scene across all genres. The Afro beats and fusion of local culture with a global sound is a trend we cannot wait to hear more of!!

As much as we ha ve all been learn ing how to fleek eyebrows and fin our ding the perfect foundation to ma and of course hig tch out hlighting our cheek bones in 20 18, this is only the beginnin g. In 2019, we anticipate more pe ople using colou r variations to match either their eyeshadow or lip stick to their outfit s.

Makeup artists ha ve become more comfortable with various colours as a way to reflect the ir mood and this seems to have ins pired more peop le to follow suit. Ma keup has definite ly become a way to enhance looks and an accessory when stepping out of the house.

We can’t wait to see more looks fro m our favorite stars matching the ir make up with their outfits in 20 19. If you are bold enough we think you should try it out :)

Beauty on the Cheap Sometimes buying beauty products to enhance or help your skin may be a tad bit expensive. Lucky for you, SKY Girls have your back. You don’t need to spend a lot to look fabulous!

You will need an egg and half a lemon. Separate the egg yolk and egg white into two separate containers, and squeeze the lemon into the container with egg white.

Mix well and apply to the face with a brush, avoiding the eye and rinse off mouth areas. Leave for 10-15 minutes and ove impr to s with warm water. Did you know one eyeshadow palette can be used for a lot of different purposes?

Find a palette that has shimmers and mattes and that has variety of colour (blush pink & brown), and it can serve as an eyeshadow palette, a blush palette, a contour palette, and a highlighter palette, all in one.

Matte pink shades can be used as blush, shimmery shades can be used as highlighted, while darker matte shades can be used for contouring.

A P10 pot of Vaseline is maybe the best, most cost-effective beauty product you can buy.

We all know it’s good for moisturising your skin and using as a lip balm, but it doesn’t end there… it can be used as a cheaper alternative to makeup primer, to calm skin before and after shaving with a razor, to slick down baby hairs and moisturise split ends, to remove lipstick from teeth, and to tame and fix eyebrows. That is a LOT from a little pot :)
