Now that the time we have all been waiting for has arrived, it’s time for us SKY sisters to promote good vibes and fun. Spend time with people who mean the most to you, visit interesting places, and if you like food as much as I do – knock yourself out! Try something different and whatever you do, have fun! Make friends who understand your kind of fun and that stay true to themselves. Issue 18 will definitely be there for you in terms of your friends…this is the Squad Goal article after all! Make sure to check out the articles that talk about food, fun and spending time with your squad. And if you are a foodie like me, there is a special ‘Christmas Recipe’ article I’m sure you’ll love ;)

Christmas Tragedy

I had a childhood friend, Omaatla, who I grew up and endured life’s ups and downs with. We were so close and shared everything with each other, from our life aspirations to our biggest fears. Omaatla and I both grew up in Mahalapye where a lot of negatives such as teenage pregnancy, smoking and heavy drinking affected the youth, but we promised each other never to fall victim to these harms and we stayed true to ourselves all throughout primary, junior and senior school.

8

In October 2015, we wrote our BGCSE exams…I wanted to pursue a career in sports psychology from a young age, and Omaatla wanted to study law so we worked very hard to achieve our dreams. After we closed, she decided to get a job and I focused on getting my driver’s license. Festive season approached and Omaatla’s behavior began to change. She constantly insisted on us going out to huge events around Mahalapye and due to my resistance, we slowly grew apart as there was very little communication between the two of us.

Every issue, SKY Sisters look back on memories from when they were teens. This time, we’re looking back at some memorable Christmas moments in the lives of Mother-Theresa Marinah Phenyo and Tigele Nlebesi.

After I found out that she had started hanging out around the wrong crowd, and had been influenced to start drinking and smoking, I went to her house and tried talking some sense into her but my effort was all in vain. On the 22nd of December, my mother told me that Omaatla had been involved in a car accident due to drunk driving and had passed away. This news devastated me. I had lost my best friend due to her being unable to stay true to herself and her goals, and this is something I use as a constant reminder to stay true to myself and not allow any negative trends distract me from my goals in life.

A Very Bestie Christmas

Christmas was always my favourite time of the year. From salvaging the gift of plucking yellow, engorged mangoes straight from the tree and pulling those pesky mango hairs out of our teeth all day, to going home to my grandmother’s house and helping prepare my favourite meals at a hearth. I always loved the adventure, the strengthening of familial bonds, and how even the most boring chores turned into something tinged with magic when December rolled in.

More than anything however, I loved the gifts. My parents, siblings and I exchanged gifts around our Christmas tree every morning of December 25th, and my extended family always organized a secret Santa where we’d exchange even more gifts with my cousins, aunts and uncles and grandparents. It was always the highlight of my year. When I finished form 5, I fell into a slightly depressive episode right as Christmas was approaching. Suddenly, it didn’t feel like my favourite time. I was anxious about my results and my future in general. I retreated to my bedroom and barely left for weeks. The entire time I kept getting a pesky visitor. Bame, a friend from school who

lived in my neighbourhood, would come over every other day, sit on my little sister’s bed opposite mine and talk. Initially, I found her quite imposing, but I was too polite to ever ask her to leave. I wanted to be alone, but she was persistent. Eventually she got through to me. With every visit, and with every conversation, I started to feel a little bit better. She pulled me out of a dark place without even knowing it. I spent that Christmas with her and my family, and she’s been my best friend and support system ever since. She turned out to be better than any gift I could pluck from a tree, cook at a hearth, or unwrap on a December 25th morning.

HELLOW SKY NATION! I need some advice from you SKY GIRLS, I have a friend, she is my best Friend... I love her and I told her many times about how I feel about her… but every time when we meet each other and when I try to talk to her about my feelings she changes the topic. What I don’t like is that each time when boys talk to her about love, she tells them that am her boyfriend. I don’t know if she has feelings for me or what. What can I do? Please help!! Thabiso Kesego Kgathi Makwate I think she is afraid of destroying the friendship bond. But then again she doesn’t want any other guy between the two of you. Be appreciative of the fact that at least she doesn’t want any other guy even if being with you will call for other things she’s not ready to deal with. Friendship is the important thing. Things will now change the moment she agrees and the question is are you ready? So give her time. Yes remind her of how you feel now and then, but don’t run out of patience. Best of luck

Boikhutso Rozibee Maseko You know what, that gal likes u too. Play along and occasionally point out she is your girlfriend as well… And if u really wanna get out of the friendzone stop acting as a “best friend” and act as a love interest, genuinely complement her once in a while, ijoh rra actions say a lot more than words. But don’t scare her off though, take it slow... little things will amount to big things… Hmm Act !! Eseng jalo u will become the best man at her wedding... Imagine seeing the woman u love marry some other guy ijoh

Hello, I need your advice guys. Any tips you can give me on how to make friends? I’m 20 and I don’t have any friends The ones I had kind of got bored with me because I’m not an outgoing person, I’m always indoors and I’m shy...

Maduo N. Modimoosi Hey SKY Sister I honestly understand what you are going through because I have been there, where I felt nobody could understand me… but baby girl I worked my way out of that little dark corner. Now my advice to you is first and foremost lover go for people of your calibre. You are an indoor person and kinda shy so go for friends like you… Why? Because they might understand you better. Secondly, try opening up to new people. Gather a little confidence and go out there and shine. One more thing, don’t rush to find friends, take your time and find people that will accept you and love you for who you are. Ebile you must understand that you ain’t under pressure to find friends… no! Be who you and you will find yourself true friends. I love you babe GOOD LUCK.

Lakidzani Lucky Fanyana My sister I understand that you are an introvert from all that you noted. My advice is to look for friends who will accept you for who you are, those who will understand you and those with whom you share a lot of interests. Don’t go around looking for friends. The ones that click with you, who enjoy your company ke bone ba ka nnang ditsala le bone coz that way you understand each other!

Things Guys wish Girls Knew A lot of the problems that SKY Girls face involve us not understanding each other. We got a gang of SKY Guys together to tell us some of the things they WISH girls knew. Here are some of the top answers they gave :)

12

Guys actually have emotions too. Some of us even cry when we get the feels, it’s just we don’t tell the whole world about it. If we open up to you, please don’t tell your friends about how we’re sensitive and things like that. Take it as a compliment but don’t break our trust and talk to other people about it.

We don’t all like the same type of girl. Like sometimes girls will go on saying they want to be skinny, or thick, well we have different tastes so don’t assume we all want you to look the same way. Also guys don’t care as much as girls about looks.

Trying to make your boyfriend jealous is not cool. It doesn’t make us like you more to say how much other guys are into you, it just makes us think you are a player and not want to be with you any more. Also it’s not nice to talk about how cute your ex or any other guy is.

We don’t know what you’re thinking. Tell us, otherwise we are not gonna guess. We like things to be really obvious so please just be straight up and spell it out, and we will appreciate that.

We don’t want to act all cute in front of our friends. They will laugh at us when you’re not there, so please don’t expect me to act cute in front of my friends. You will get ignored and then feel bad. Leave that to when we are just hanging just the 2 of us.

We can tell when a girl is insecure... being loud and mean doesn’t cover that up. The coolest girls are usually chilled ones who can hang with the boys and don’t put other people down to make themselves seem better :)

No, we don’t want you to smoke and drink to prove you’re grown up. It doesn’t suit you. Actually guys prefer girls who don’t smoke. So don’t do stupid things thinking it will impress us. We can tell you’re trying hard, LOL! Jealousy is annoying. Maybe some guy treated you bad in the past but if it wasn’t me then don’t blame me for it. I’m allowed to have female friends and relatives, and if you get jealous it will just damage our relationship.

Please don’t argue with us when we compliment you. Just accept our compliments sometimes, you don’t have to go on and on saying it’s not true. Confidence is attractive.

A lot of what guys do is just fronting. Like girls will talk about how they’ve never had a boyfriend, but many guys also worry that they have never had a girlfriend. It’s just that most guys don’t talk about it, and pretend they have, LOL. Don’t believe everything we say HAHA.

You know this time of year there are those tunes that somehow magically play in EVERY corner of BW, whether it’s a braai, a chill sesh, or a wedding! So what’s it gonna be this year?!

We asked our favourite spinner DJ CUPID to give us the lowdown on the top tracks this summer 2017 - 2018! If you haven’t checked them yet it’s time to put down your books, turn up the volume and DANCE LIKE NOBODY’S WATCHING! Aweh!

DJ Cupid – Thiba Baloi Number one on my list is my debut single Thiba Baloi. I was going through change in my life and eliminating negativity was my remedy. I decided to release a song that was relevant to my experience at that time. We used the Setswana word Boloi which means Witchcraft as a metaphor for negativity and since re le shap ka boloi we have to Thiba Baloi! It’s a hit! Look out for more of it this summer.

A.T.I – Khiring Khiring Khorong Khorong It has been hot since its release but this is just the beginning. Watch him take over this festive season.

Ban T – Bankutlwe It has a native touch to it. I like the fact that he came out of his comfort zone and did what we less expect of him. Incorporating Setswana in his music was a good move and for that Batswana will definitely want to here more of it this festive season.

Cardi B – Bodak Yellow We just want to sing along sometimes. Cardi B gave us the opportunity to do so and we will be helping her perform Bodak Yellow this festive season. Haha!

Emtee – Platinum Taken off his new album Manando, Platinum is going to be a party starter. He talks about how he just went platinum, celebrating his success. It has a heavy bassline, it will blow you and your speakers away!

Wizkid ft Bucie – All For Love Nigerian superstar Wizkid surprised us and worked with house music songbird Bucie to come up with this feelgood song. Check out Wizkid’s album titled Sounds From The Other Side, it’s one of my personal favorites!

You can only sleep so much, right? After week 2 of the holidays you might be trying to think of different things to keep you busy. Well we gotchu fam, here is a TON of ideas to keep you and your squad busy this summer. And don’t worry, they are all either cheap or totally FREE! Tell us which you tried over on our FB page!

Yeah, you know this one! Get a group of girls together and each of you must bring 5 items of clothing you no longer want. Swap, swap, swap. Then you will go home with 5 brand new items of clothing… everyone’s happy :)

Have your own aerobics class

Play the ‘funniest outfit’ game

Put on a play using real people!

Make your own ice cream

Get a bunch of friends over, put your favourite house/ dance tracks up full blast and get your workout on! Even simple sidesteps, box-steps and starjumps are good for your health, but you will probably be tempted to add some moves of your own!

16

Clothes swap

OK this sounds weird, but hear us out. Go to a busy place with your friends, and sit somewhere you can see people but they can’t hear you. Then you and your friends can imagine what conversations those people are having, and act out their voices. Try your funniest accents and imagine they are doing crazy things :)

Sometimes it’s kinda NOT fun to try on clothes when you’re broke. :( But you know what is fun – this game! Challenge a friend to go round a clothes shop and you each pick an outfit for the other. The challenge is it has to be the silliest, most ridiculous outfit you can find. Then try on the outfits you picked for each other Don’t forget to take photos :P

We SKY girls just LOVE going for ice cream, the only problem is it’s not super cheap! Well what if we told you it could cost only P1? Mash a banana or use a blender, then put it in the freezer, stirring again every 10 minutes until you are have banana ice-cream! It tastes delicious so make enough for everyone in this heat:) Try adding honey, cinnamon or sugar for that extra mmm!

Bonus ideas

Run a pop-up restaurant evening

Pop-up restaurants are the hottest thing in New York, London and Cape Town. But there’s no reason why you can’t do it too! Pick a night, decorate a room in your house all fancy, put some tunes on and have all your friends dress up and come over for food :) It’s a ‘one-nightonly’ kinda thing so make it special – you could write out a proper menu, take their coats when they arrive, even make your younger brother be a waiter for the evening!

Organise a neighbourhood cleanup

Cleaning up is good for your body and your soul :) Festive can leave areas a bit messy, so why not do your bit for the environment by getting a group together and going round with a black bag? Try setting yourself 1 hour to clear 1 street - you will be surprised how much you can get done in that time! You’ll feel great afterwards too, inside and out, plus you’ll be the new local hero *swoon*

Have a home-made spa facial

Try making your own face scrub using sugar, olive oil, mashed banana or avocado. Any combination of those ingredients will give you glowing skin! You could also try an at-home facial steam – carefully pour boiled water into a bowl, then lean your head over it with a towel on top to trap the steam. Do this for 5 minutes after a scrub and you’ll feel 100.

Learn to braid hair

Learning how to plait, braid and twist your friends’ hair isn’t just a way to pass the time, it could even earn you some cash if you learn how to do it nicely! Put some thought into what styles that everyone will want in 2018, and you could even become the ‘go-to’ girl who knows all the latest trends. Ask a friend or family member to teach you how :)

1. DIY customize your clothes (see our very own article on page 32 to find out how) 2. Make a collage out of old magazines to give as a Christmas gift, or just stick it on your bedroom wall! 3. Invite some friends to come over with all their makeup and accessories, then give each other makeovers 4. Ask someone to suggest a title to a poem. Then you and your friends each come up with a poem that matches the title – in 2 minutes! Read them out and choose a winner:) 5. Rearrange all the furniture in the house for a fresh feel 6. Make up a new game with crazy rules. Write the rules down into a cute rulebook that you can keep for years 7. Here’s a crazy game: try moving as many sweets as you can into a jar in under a minute. But - no hands! Use only a straw to suck and hold them! 8. Become a landscape artist – plan out how you can make the yard or garden more beautiful, then do it… be inventive! 9. Start a journal – even if it only lasts for the holiday, it’s still a cool thing to do! 10. Have a cook-off challenge. Split into teams and see who can braai the best (tip: get your parents to be the judges, they will love it!)

Festive

E V I T FES We asked you over on the skygirlsbw Facebook page to tell us all about your squad, and how you spend time together over the holidays! We received so many amazing entries (y’all are FIRE!) and the winning squad is featured right here on the cover. Let’s Find out more about your festive cover girls…

18

My squad consists of five 13-year-old girls namely: 1. Masa Kebakile (a short adorable Motswana girl who schools at Phakalane High School) 2. Jeanita Costa (Portugese/Motswana girl who has an incredible sense of humor and schools at Gaborone International School) 3. Nicola Mmeke (Motswana girl with a bubbly personality and schools at GIS) 4. Gimhani Perera (Sri Lankan/Motswana girl who schools at LKC and is always smiling, very positive and confident) … and last but not least, me! 5. Eng Moonwa (Motswana girl who schools at Maru-a-Pula and is basically the craziest girl in the squad) We all schooled at Hillcrest International School for seven years and only became close sisters last year we supported each other even went through PSLE together! Currently we all go to different high schools in Gaborone but we definitely make time for each other. We mostly hang out at Masa’s place where we host small braai sessions and just chill, laugh and obviously end the weekend with a lit sleepover. We also enjoy going for movies (our favourite cinema is the one at Masa Center) where we never really concentrate on the movie but instead we do a little mischief and drama P.S. We love throwing popcorn at each other. When Masa, Nicola, Gimhani, Jeanita and I are together we talk about boys and high school drama, you know starting with Form 1 we have been through so much and we try to help each other out, talk about our problems and stay strong for one another just like all sisters do. Our all time favourite motto is: “SISTERS ARE NEVER APART, MAYBE IN DISTANCE BUT NEVER AT HEART“

We love reading SKY Magazine, it’s literally the only magazine we can actually find people we can relate to and we are praying that you give us the chance to be on the cover because at this age to be on the cover of a magazine is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Love, Eng Moonwa xxx

COLOUR Lavender

With honorouable mention to black & white, and also to the surprise combination of red & pink, we have to predict the biggest colour trend of 2018 will be lavender. It has been seen in all the biggest fashion shows, which means in the New Year you’ll be able to find it at your local Mr Price :) There are no rules, just throw on anything light purple and you’ll be bang on

OK Selena is rocking multiple trends here (see the transparent coloured mazaza trend) but let us draw your attention to colour of the jacket. In 2018 we predict a move from mid or light blue denim jackets to dark denim, ranging from midnight blue to darkest charcoal in colour. Choose an XL size and wear it over cute but casual clothes for the full Selena effect.

Fash&ion B ea u t y Are you having problems with bad skin?? Here are some tips you can use to get your skin looking flawless again!!

Remember that you’re beautiful. Focus on the parts of yourself that you like, rather than on the pimples. This can be either be a physical body part you feel is beautiful or your personality traits. Ask your friends, family or teachers what they like about you. A question such as “What do you think my best features are?” can give you a wonderful place to start focusing on the positive.

How to with ac bad

Look around you. While it may sometimes seem that you’re the only one with pimples, the truth is that many people deal with acne at some point. 70-87% of teenagers have acne in some form or another, and many adults also get pimples. Acne is the most common skin problem that occurs in teenagers.

Be less critical of yourself.

34

Too frequently, we are our own worst critics. Unfortunately, the severe parts of both selfcriticism and acne tend to peak at around the same time during your teen years. Remember that even though your acne may look horrible to you, most people may not even notice.

Don’t give up hope. There’s a good chance that your acne will eventually go away. Most people only get acne during their teen years and it generally clears up by the time they reach their twenties. While this can seem like an eternity, telling yourself that it’s a passing problem can help it seem like less of a big deal. Think about the fact that your acne will probably clear up eventually.

Wash your face twice a day.

SKY

It is very important to keep your face clean when trying to prevent pimples. Washing your 35 face removes dirt, impurities and any excess g oil that has built up on the surface of yourM• Aaskin. • zine Using warm water and a mild facial cleanser. Use a clean dry towel to pat your face dry. Avoid scrubbing your face with a rough washcloth or sponge. This will only irritate the skin and cause pimples to become even more inflamed. Wash your towel regularly to avoid getting bacteria on it and making the problem worse.

o deal cne or skin

Avoid touching your face or popping pimples. Hands come into contact with more dirt and bacteria throughout the day than any other part of the body, which is why you should avoid touching your face at all costs. In addition to spreading bacteria and risking infection, touching spots and pimples can cause them to become irritated and inflamed, which worsens their appearance and prolonging healing time. Popping pimples will only prolong their healing time and may even lead to infection and scarring. Acne scars can be very difficult to get rid of, so you will want to avoid this as much as possible.

Avoid overloading your skin with products. Too many creams, lotions and gels can clog your pores and lead to breakouts, so make sure to apply any facial products sparingly, and no more frequently than is indicated on the packaging. Heavily fragranced or chemical-laden hair products may also clog the pores if hair comes in contact with the face, so avoid using these whenever possible. Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner which won’t irritate your skin in the shower. You should also limit your skin’s exposure to built-up oils and bacteria by changing or washing your pillowcase at least once a week.

Protect your skin from the sun. The sun’s UV rays can actually cause pimples to become even more red and inflamed than before. For this reason, it is important to protect your skin from sunlight by wearing a protective hat and applying a sunscreen.

Exercise! also helps your skin by increasing your blood circulation, which sends more oxygen to your skin cells and carries cell waste away. But keep in mind that sweat from exercise can also lead to breakouts by irritating your skin, so it’s important to shower right after a workout.

FINALLY!! Consult a dermatologist. If you have already consulted a dermatologist make sure to follow the prescription and take your medication on time at the times that you are supposed to take them.
