Boi Kgathi Rasmussen Youth Entrepreneurship Expert

SKY

et Success

Mag •A• zine

Boi Kgathi Rasmussen is CEO & founder of Y-BECA Youth Entrepreneurship Foundation, co-founder of The SproutHub Marketing & Innovation Consulting Company, co-founder of Startup Nation Botswana and Startup Coach at the Amsterdam Business School, University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands. She is also the author of Brighter Futures for Young Entrepreneurs.

Hi Boi! Please tell us your Sures? Ke sure ka tennis, books and travel. And your Shapos? Negativity, disorganization and feeling like I’ve not explored my full potential. Can you tell us a little about your work ethic? I work extremely hard and I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty! I strongly believe it is important for females to have their own careers and be independent. It is good for our self-confidence and sense of self-worth. Females serve as role models for their kids as much as males do. What is one quote that inspires you? “I think it is possible for ordinary people to choose to be extraordinary.” – Elon Musk

Boi Kgathi Rasmussen’s book, title Brighter Fut d ur e for Young s Entrepreneu rs

And which person inspires you? Elon Musk again! He’s quite simply a brilliant entrepreneur. His vision of the future inspires hope. I find inspiration in his relentless pursuit of gamechanging innovations. Which place inspires you? The beauty and serenity of the English countryside. But, nothing in this world beats the vibrancy of the African continent, full of hopes and dreams – and unlimited possibilities! What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently? I was trying to be cool and showing off my (nonexistent) dance moves. Someone recorded this. Turns out, I was singing along to the music too and I absolutely sounded like a cat being strangled. What would we find in your handbag right now? A book titled Exponential Organisations, by Salim Ismail. I geek out quite a bit! But, you might also find some girly stuff, like a Mac lipstick.

Swcceeests su 10 THINGS I HAVE LEARNED ABOUT ENTREPRENEURSHIP Boi Kgathi Rasmussen Thinking of starting your own business one day? Being an entrepreneur is no walk in the park - it is a journey full of many ups and downs! There are numerous lessons along this journey; on how and where to start, how to keep going and ultimately find success. Success, like entrepreneurship, is a journey and not a destination. I continue to learn many things. As you prepare for your own journey into entrepreneurship, let me share with you some of the lessons I have learned!

1

FIND REAL PROBLEMS TO SOLVE

An idea is worth nothing if it doesn’t solve a real problem. Getting started with a business idea should be centred around making things better, easier, simper or faster for people. Always think; ‘How can I make a difference in this world? How can I impact someone’s life positively?’ Take time to look around you and make observations of what people are struggling with, or their wishes. This helps you build products or services that people want and will buy.

10

2

DON’T DO IT FOR THE MONEY

3

You will be disappointed if you do it only for the money. In truth, you most probably will not get rich quick anyway. Instead, try to find something you’re good at or something you love and start a business out of it. Maybe you like knitting and find that kids living in villages can’t afford knitwear for winter. So perhaps you figure out you could make affordable handmade knitwear. See, your core focus here is doing something you’re good at and love, and using it to improve someone else’s life. Money is secondary. You may end up creating a profitable business in the process.

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START

When I was about nine years old, my brother and I started a neighbourhood ‘football club’. Nothing spectacular. Just the kids in our neighbourhood as players and our field was an empty space next to my childhood home in Selibe-Phikwe. We figured we had to raise money to buy football clothes and balls for the team so we could look ‘professional’ for our Sunday games. I was the treasurer, with a can of CocaCola as a piggy bank. I asked every team member to contribute some money. I took the little money we raised, bought

some sweets, put a margin on and sold back to the team members. I went back and forth like this a few times. Then, I figured I could upgrade from sweets to fizzy drinks and put a bigger margin on because the kids got thirsty during practise sessions. I sold these to the team members and their friends & family. After a while, we could afford to buy cheap shorts and t-shirts from the Pep Store and still had some change. I learned, at age nine, about margins and finding new revenue models.

Don’t start a business thinking it will be easy to get someone to finance it. Raising funds can be a long and hard process. At about age 20, I co-founded an advertising agency in South Africa. I tried to raise funds for about two months and did not get anywhere. Instead of giving up, I scaled down on my ambitions and started with designing logos for friends and very small businesses. The money made went back into the business. Before long, word got around and in small increments over time, our clients got bigger and bigger.

6

5

GET A MENTOR

Find someone who has experience as an entrepreneur or business professional. Mentors will give you guidance, advice, open doors for you and help up your game by constantly challenging your assumptions and decisions. This is a valuable experience, one that I missed out on in my first business as a young entrepreneur. I now have more than one mentor and always look forward to their advice as it helps me grow professionally.

FIND YOUR NORTH STAR AND ALWAYS REMEMBER IT

It is your deep purpose for doing what you do. Whether you’re selling knitwear to kids in villages or whatever else, it is important to know and remember your purpose. It is the light that will guide you out of the darkest and most difficult of times. There will be plenty of these, including self-doubt. In such times, your north star will keep you calm and motivated.

SKY

4

START SMALL. NO ONE WILL GIVE YOU MONEY

11

Mag •A• zine

NOTHING IN THIS WORLD IS EVER PERFECT

In the world of business, plans and products change all the time. And this can be a good thing. It does wonders to your business to be adaptable, flexible and agile. On the other hand, you will also learn that almost nothing ever happens according to how and when you want it to. For instance, people will not show up on time, they will take their time to respond to your emails or proposals, etc. You have zero control over this. Aim for perfection, yes, it helps you do better. But, don’t lose sleep worrying yourself to death about it.

9

NEVER STOP LEARNING

Be an eternal student. Learn something new every day. Read, talk to people, travel. Take interest in other industries besides your own. You will be surprised what you will learn that can help your business.

10 7

STAY KIND, BUT BE FIRM

People will try to take advantage of your kindness. Don’t let it change who you are. Being firm about your prices or what you want does not make you unkind.

WORK HARD AND FIND PLEASURE IN DOING SO

Nothing moves if you don’t put in the effort and hours. You only get out what you put into it. Nothing worthwhile, nothing great can be achieved with no effort. Being an entrepreneur is a 24/7 job.

Bogolo Kenewendo

Dear Bogolo, First things first, I am so proud of you! I wish I could give you a hug and let you know that you are not alone in your teenage struggles; your body changes, your mood swings, your emperor rages... it's all part of growing up. You just need to learn some selfcontrol, it will be of great benefit later. There are so many temptations around you. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are missing out or not cool by focusing on your focus! Trying hard to seem cool is overrated anyway! A much more fulfilling life is awaiting you, where you have greater understanding of yourself and the kind of things you like (and you can afford them too!) My dearest B, you are such an overcomer! You are a strong girl who has lived so much for a 14 year old. You have gone from living well off to not, lived through some abuse, you have moved so much in your short life. You have survived 11 school transfers and that teacher who said you were a lost cause when you failed because you had just transferred to their school. You have remained strong through being bullied and called names. Remember, don’t compare yourself to others. Own your path! When you are 16, you will meet someone who will help reshape your life forever, and you will learn about life plans and setting yourself life goals. You will take them seriously, set

yourself annual targets and by the 5th year anniversary of setting your goals, you will have achieved most of them. It will be hard and frustrating, you will get a lot of NOs! You'’ll experience lots of rejection. Please do not despair, we count on your youthful energy and ability to ‘regenerate’ for our survival. I want to assure you, life will get better, and much more fun. You will find yourself in parts of the world you never imagined a simple girl from Motopi like you could visit, let alone live in. Let me give you a teaser; you study in the UK, US and Italy, move to Ghana, and do business as far as China. And now, I’'m writing this piece to you as I sit in the Pan African Parliament.… Remain humble, every personal encounter means so much more than you can imagine. One day you will look back and see that every moment; big/small, happy/sad are all part of the artistry in painting your beautiful life. I love you so much and remember, all your dreams are valid!

Love, Bogolo xxx

Letter to my 14-yearold self Bogolo Kenewendo is a trained Economist. She was specially nominated by the President of Botswana HE SKI Khama in 2016, and subsequently became the youngest Specially Elected Member of Parliament and the youngest woman Member in Botswana’s history.

Michelle Ntshupeng I’ve learnt that being nice to everyone is always great because it might have an effect in your life. I’ve learnt to count my blessings instead of my problems. Oh my gosh! And also to smile a lot because it reduces a lot of stress haii!! Mostly I’ve learnt to say ke shapo ka everything that’s not good for me or my health and to say sure ka everything that keeps me going, smiling and happy.

This issue’s cover competition was all about those ‘Sweet 16’ vibes, and how much we’ve learned on our journeys towards becoming adults. We asked you to tell us the most important things you have learnt throughout your lives so far! We all have a lot still to learn, but sharing is caring so let’s check out some of the biggest ‘things I’ve learnt’ from our 4 covergirls: Wame, Lerato, Lucy & Michelle <3

SKY

15

Mag •A• zine

Lucy B Katlego I’ve learnt that girls must never look down on themselves even if they feel they lost their dignity. I’ve learnt that STRESSED spelled backwards is DESSERTS.. I‘ve learnt that to be noticed or accepted is not so easy, but be yourself! Above all those, I learnt that time wasted never returns.

Lerato Baruti Love and respect each and every body part of yours because that’s how beautifully God made you. He said “everyone is made beautiful” no matter the race/ skin. So keep them safe as much as possible. You’ll see yourself growing into a free-spirited, healthy human always wearing a smile on their face.

16

I’ve learnt that failure is part of learning. Fail once, then that’s your first attempt so you should avoid that mistake to take the right step. I’ve learnt that pain is something that can ruin a person completely, so be careful what you say to others. I’ve learnt to appreciate people because you never know what’s going to happen next to them.

SKY

Mag •A• zine

Wame Michelle Moks I have learnt to own up. Owning a mistake is greater than faking perfection. It’s okay to catch an L (Loss) once in a while. Embrace those L’s and bounce back. Might as well switch them to W’s (Wins ) & double them up! I have learnt to love myself. Selflove is not selfish. I believe you cannot truly love another until you know how to love yourself. Put yourself at the top of your to-do list every single day and the rest will fall into place. I have learnt that it should always be mind over mouth. Open your mind before you open your mouth. I have learnt to cherish family. Cherishing your human connections is important, be it relationships with friends or family.

HOW Truee Lif

TO

SA Y

Here at SKY, we are all about embracing our Sures :) but just as important is rejecting our Shapos - things we don’t want in our lives. Whatever your Shapos might be, it’s important to know how to say no, so you’re not derailed from the path you have chosen for yourself. <3 OWN the moment you say no, and let your choice define you. After all, girls who have a personal stand are on their way to success :) Remember: You were born with the right to accept or refuse whatever you like. If it makes you uncomfortable, you can say no.

Stand up for others

4

Walk away from the situation

5

Make ‘no’ funny, it could get rid of any tension in the situation!

6

Use body language

7

‘Use broken record technique’ – there is no need to change what you are saying, just repeat it if they are not getting the message. Every time you say “no thanks” it will make your feel even more powerful ;)

DON’T

1

Say no assertively; smile and say what you feel. Firmly.

Mag •A• zine

E.g. if a stranger asks you to send nude photos… “Please leave me alone. That is literally illegal. It is never going to happen.” E.g. if another girl in school wants to fight you… “Ga ke batle go lwa. We can talk in private though if you want.” E.g. if another girl is being offered a cigarette and she looks unsure... “O ska wara, you don’t have to impress them come hang with us!” E.g. if some friends want you to skip school with them. “No, I don’t want to but I’ll see you at the mall later on”

E.g. if your friends are gossiping about another girl at your school... “Ao shem guys, let me not throw shade. I don’t want to catch it back”

E.g. if your crush offers you a cigarette… (stand up tall, big smile) “No thanks, I’m a non-smoker!”

E.g. if a friend is pressuring you to smoke... You: “No, I don’t want to” Them: “Go on” You: “No, I don’t want to” Them: “Ah just do it!” You: “No, I don’t want to” Them: “Oh… OK!”

BE AFRAID TO SAY NO “I… might not be able to come. I’m not sure, maybe…”

2

SAY NO TOO AGGRESSIVELY “No way, that is so dumb. You guys are losers”

3

MUMBLE “ummmm… *quiet* I don’t want to”

Diet Sometimes your body craves unhealthy food when all it wants is some vitamins. Next time you get an unhealthy craving, try having some fruit or veggies first :)

2

Water, water, water! It is good for you on 3 levels – your digestive system, your skin, and your mind! Aim to drink 2 – 3 litres of the good stuff every day.

3

The healthiest way to eat is to vary your diet. Believe it or not, ‘unhealthy’ foods can make up part of a healthy diet, as long as you vary what you eat as much as possible!

4

Eating immediately before you sleep is not a good idea; it means you are not burning off those calories and it can also disrupt your sleep. Try to eat dinner 3 – 5 hours before going to bed.

32

Exercise 5 6

Join a sport. It’s more fun exercising with a group of people aiming for the same goal. Join one of the sports that interests you and you’ll find it easier to work out. Netball, dance, karate… whatever you like to make you sweat! :p Are you low on cash? Don’t worry about gym expenses, you can workout at home. Have your own personal routine. Take 10 push-ups in the morning, 10 sit-ups, 10 squats, and even skip for a minute or 2. Nothing hectic, just light exercises to wake your body and also keep you in shape.

Beauty

Slather on the moisturizer this winter! Your skin can get super dry this time of year, so give it the love it deserves <3 Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing for the softest effect!

Did you know that even second-hand smoke is really bad for you? If you are hanging out with people who smoke, try to avoid it as much as possible. Secondhand smoke can give you bad skin, make you smell bad and even make you sick.

Beautifu BODY

, clothes Beauty is about more than our hair healthy, stay and nails. It’s also about how we day :) follow ry confident and loving ourselves eve out! our 16 tips for beauty, inside and

7

Go for walks. If you don’t feel like running, walk your dog, walk with your friends, cousins, or even on your own. Walks are refreshing, and they do count as exercising.

8

Exercise your brain by reading, playing crossword games, puzzles, board games, and all. Your brain activity will be used to working and this will make it easier for you to study for your school. Read, read, and read.

Design your own ‘failsafe confidence look’ ahead of time, and use it when you are stressing about what to wear! Match a few pieces that you know you feel great in, so you never have to worry when you have to plan in short notice again! ;)

11

Whenever you see someone with a style you like, ask them how they achieved it! Get those brow tips, find out where she bought those shoes, and ask which celebrity style she follows :O

Try meditating (sitting quietly and clearing your mind) for 10 minutes every day! You will be a calmer, wiser you in no time.

Make a list of all the things you love about yourself. You could even spread the love by making one for each of your friends too!

If you are feeling weighed down by stress, take a deep breath, stand up tall and smile. The way you act outside will help you feel better on the inside!

16

Go easy on yourself. As young women, we can often be our own harshest critics, which can make us insecure. Focus on the things you love about yourself and forgive the things you don’t like!

As young as we are, we feel the need to stress about how we look but we don’t have to. Our bodies are changing and we just have to take each day as it comes. Don’t feel so much pressure to exercise and lose weight, just eat right, take care of your mind, soul, and body, and be happy.

Problems Solved An anonymous SKY girl said: “Hi guys...sometimes when I post a photo 41people like, but when I look to someone’s photo 1000 people liked… I want my photos to be liked please help me”

And SKY Girl Bonang Crystal Matlho stepped into help. Her reply was: The problem here is not the likes...or lack thereof... It doesn’t mean you’re unlikable when your ‘likes’ are lower than you wish them to be. The problem here may be that you haven’t accepted you for you. And that can be really frustrating. If you want to #STAYTRUE then you should really not make a competition out of something you can’t control and appreciate those sincere 41 people who do like you. There’s only one of you to go around, you’re THAT rare. So don’t place your value in the hands of people you’ll probably never meet and a button on social media...because when they leave, they’re taking your value with them and that may be dangerous. So take a good look in the mirror and YOU start liking what you see,,and forget what everyone else sees because they may not see you. :) I honestly hope that helps because I’ve been there before....

All my love xoxo

SKYSCOPES

.

SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Look to older figures for advice. Ask a parent or grandparent for advice on issues you feel strongly about. A good relationship with your parents is beneficial for you and you will find that you can break through barriers that may have existed between you and them. Make a conscious effort to build relationships with the elders because they will be your support system throughout life.

CANCER Jun 21 - July 22 It’s around your birthday baby girl :) You can turn up with SKY as we celebrate our Sweet Sixteen. Whatever age you’re celebrating, celebrate it with a Big BANG and have fun love. The world has a lot to offer and there is nothing stopping you from achieving greatness, go out and celebrate life girl :) Remember to stay true.

PISCES Feb 19 - Sep 22 Starting out with a solid plan is key. Get a nice solid foundation laid so that you are in an advantageous position to deal with the unexpected events that will come your way. These unexpected events will work in your favour, if you are prepared. We know you got this babes.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 Indulge yourself in some physical activity and be consistent with it. You don’t need to spend lot of money going to the gym and on equipment. You can run around your neighbourhood and your front yard, where there is open space and just let your body be refreshed by the physical activity. Don’t forget to hydrate and have 10 second rests in between your exercises.

LEO July 23 - Aug 22 People are happy to see your happy face, and it tends to cheer someone up who really needs it. Spread your positive energy and remember to move at your own pace, and don’t let anyone convince you to do anything you’re not ready for. Do you and stay true to yourself baby girl :)

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 It’s sometimes difficult to know what we feel. Everyone is challenged by the question, how are you? But few people stop and ask themselves privately for a genuine answer. Begin checking in with yourself daily. If you don’t know exactly how you feel that’s OK, but just start taking the question seriously. It’s very important to your health! Like anything, practice will make it easier, and you will become better able to serve your health.

CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan 19 Share your skills with the people around you. You will find that as you engage in the role of teacher, you learn more than if you just hold onto your knowledge without sharing it. You will be challenged in ways you didn’t even think possible. Perhaps you will be forced to do a little research when questions arise that you don’t know how to answer. This will be helpful to your studies as well.

VIRGO Aug 23 - Sep 22 Remember that there are people around who love you. No matter what, there’s always a shoulder to cry on, even if it isn’t a tangible one. Even in your darkest moments, you’re never alone. Let this knowledge carry you through the day. Feel free to share it with others who seem like they could use a lift. Remember you are beautiful and strong!

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 What are your hopes and dreams? Think about what you really want, review your sures and shapos as a guide to have a clear view of your life and make the relevant decisions that will be of benefit to you in future. Don’t be shaken by anything or anyone. Remember, if you fall, get back up and keep going. Aspire to reach your goals more than anything.

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 The year is still early and you can still do the things you set for yourself at the beginning of the year. You can join a club, a sport or you can indulge yourself in the arts and explore your talent and share it with the people you love, it may grow into something bigger if you work hard. Slay boo :)

LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 Don’t hesitate to say the obvious today even if it sounds corny. Many times, people hesitate to say what they really feel because they think it’s obvious to everyone. The truth of the matter is that people aren’t mind readers and probably aren’t picking up on the signals that you send out. Help them by speaking frankly. If you wanna say no to something, just say it. People will respect you for that.

GEMINI May 21 - Jun 20 You may feel a deep desire to travel and crave something new and different in your life. You just can’t help but be a bit bored by the dullness of the routine. If adventure is what you want, why not plan an exotic trip? Even if you don’t have the money now, you can still start doing some research. Just knowing that you’re going to go someday will help raise your spirits.
