Getting Started with the Portal

Quick Reference: Portal Terminology

Split Flap: the cool analog sign you have, sometimes referred to as “board” in this document

The Portal: this website is your content management system for all Split Flap programming

Page: one piece of content (a quote, greeting, beer list, etc) formatted to your liking

Message: one or more Pages, strung together with timing and animations

Collections: the folder structure within Portal where you can organize all of your content

Animations: the pre-programmed styles of spinning, to get from one Page to the next

Tags: keywords tied to a message to help with organizing your content

Dashboard: view what’s currently displaying on your Split Flap & what’s up next

Library: where Oat Foundry provides some pre-written & formatted content (available for free!)

Apps: live data connections, usually via an API

Schedule: a calendar, used for creating events with messages

Event: a block of time, with a start and end date, during which selected messages appear

Instant Message: a one-time message, sent immediately to the Split Flap

Override: one message, repeating on the Split Flap in an infinite loop

Getting Set Up

In order to display messaging on your Split Flap, complete the following steps:

Install your Split Flap

Connect power & data

Power on the Split Flap

Confirm internet connectivity, as needed

Accessing The Portal

Check your inbox for an email from our team regarding your new Portal account

Head over to the Login page and enter in the credentials provided in that email

You can reset your temporary password to something new on the Security page

Creating New Content for your Split Flap

Creating New Content – Starting from Scratch

Go to your Collections page

Add a new Collection (essentially a folder to group your content together) and give it a name

Then select “Add Message ”

Click on the sign in the center to start typing

Use the alignment buttons on the menu to left, right, or center align your text

Click on the Color Palette icon to access any colors and/or custom flaps you have on your Split Flap

Add as many Pages as you want to create one Message

Don’t forget to give your Message a name (top left) and Save (top right)

Creating New Content – Implementing (Free) Apps

Select the Puzzle icon on the Message menu, then select the App you’d like to use from the side panel

Free Apps include: Time & Date, Weather, and Countdown

Then place the App layout onto the sign where you want it

This block will update with live data when displayed on your sign

Creating New Content – Using Oat Foundry’s Library

Head over to the Library to explore what’s available

The available Library content will already be resized to fit your Split Flap

If you like what you see, click “Add to My Collection” in the bottom right

This will make a copy of the Library Message in your Collections

You can then edit the content as much as you want

I sert from Collection” to copy other saved Message(s) into this Message

You can also use this method to insert specific Pages from the Oat Foundry provided Library content

Once added, drag and drop on the left to rearrange the Pages, as needed

Editing Content – Timing

There are two settings that impact the timing of your messages – the Page Duration & the Animation Time

Animation Time: how long should it take the Split Flap to flip from the previous Page to this Page

Page Duration: how long this Page should appear on your Split Flap

Edit this timing per Page or use the Settings Gear to adjust the timing for all Pages in a Message at once

Editing Content – Style

Animations: the pre-programmed styles of spinning, to get from one Page to the next Select the Animation Style for each page

There are over 20 options from which to choose Not sure which animation to use? Select the “Random Choice” animation to be surprised with one of the options!

If you have a favorite animation, set this as the default on your Account, under Message Settings

Sending Messages to your Split Flap

Now that you ’ ve created a bunch of different Messages, saved in your Collections, it’s time to put that Messaging on your Split Flap – either send it now or schedule it to appear at a later date

Sending Messages – Instant Message

Instant Message: a one-time play-through of a Message that starts immediately

Select the Lightning icon from either the Collections page or the Create page

If you don't see this icon, your account may not have the necessary privileges Please contact your board admin

You’ll see the Instant Message appear in your Queue on the Dashboard with the Lightning icon:

Ideal for:

● Testing out how content looks on your Split Flap, without having to save to your Collections

● Previewing animations & timing

● Sending in-the-moment messages like “Happy Birthday” or “Hey you, in the red shirt”

Sending Messages – Schedule

Scheduled Event: A window of time during which one or more Messages will play in a loop

Add Messages to an Event on the Schedule so that the content appears during a specific timeframe

View your Schedule by Day, Week, or Month

( ) using the Settings (gear icon, top right)

Click and drag on the calendar to add an Event, or select the “Schedule Event” button in the top right

Name the Event and select/edit the start and end times

Use the panel on the left to select which Message(s) from your Collections to add to this Event

How it works:

If you have 15 minutes of content in an Event’s Message Queue scheduled for a 30-minute event, your Split Flap will play two loops of that messaging on the sign during that time window

[Optional]: Make the Event recurring using the options in the dropdown:

Delete or reschedule Events any time on the Schedule

Any scheduled Events will appear in your Dashboard Queue with the Calendar icon:

Ideal for:

● Recurring events, like holidays, birthdays, happy hours, trivia nights, or meetings

● Implementing very specific timing For example, a schedule of events at a trade show or office

● Only running your Split Flap during business hours

Sending Messages – Override

Override: an infinite loop of a Message

Select the Rotating icon from either the Collections page You can have multiple overrides active

Disable the Override any time to stop the Message from appearing on your Split Flap

You’ll see the Override Message appear in your Queue on the Dashboard with the Rotating icon:

IMPORTANT: any Messages sent with an Override will cancel out any concurrent scheduled content

Ideal for:

● One long Message (we recommend 50+ Pages) with a lot of variety to run all day, every day

Settings & Other Controls

Control Multiple Split Flap Displays

Use the dropdown menu in the top right to select other boards

Share Collections with other Split Flap locations in your account from the Collections page

Using the Dashboard – Pause Current Messaging

On the Dashboard, use the Pause or Skip button to control what’s currently on your Split Flap

Click the Pause button to stay on the same Page Enter the amount of time you want to pause the messaging for using the timer

Once paused, you can resume the Me

Using the Dashboard – Modify Current Messaging

Cancel any upcoming messages using the Queue on the lower half of the Dashboard

Adding a New User

Click on the face icon in the bottom left to access your User settings

Under “My Team,” you’ll see all the other users with access to your Split Flap

Note: Only Managers can add another user

Select “Add User” in the top right corner to add a new person to your team

The new user will receive an email with a temporary password to create their account on the Portal

There are a few options for level of access:

● View only: Can view all content and settings

● Creator: Can create/edit/delete content for a Split Flap but cannot send messaging to the sign

● Scheduler: Can schedule existing content, but cannot edit existing content

● Creator/Scheduler: Powers of both of the above

● Board Admin: Powers of the above, as well as the ability to manage app subscriptions & add users support@oatfoundry.com
