Dear Readers, If you are just visiting Nashville, welcome! For those of you who count yourselves as locals, thank you for reading Out & About Nashville! Gazing into my crystal ball from December of 2020 ‌ who knows where we all are now, as you are reading this. But my hope is that 2021 finds you well: healthy, happy, and thriving. My hope for our local and national LGBTQ+ community is the same. This issue highlights businesses that are owned or operated by LGBTQ+ folks, or who have identified themselves as welcoming to our community. In recent years, knowing whether a business is supportive of our community has again become important, both because it is important to know whom we are supporting with our dollars and because our emotional and physical safety may well depend on it. Please utilize this guide, as well as resources from the LGBTQ+ Chamber and the Tennessee Equality Project, among others, to help guide you to businesses that help make this community a safer and more open environment for LGBTQ+ people. We Advocate, Educate, and Connect on behalf of our individual, small business, corporate, and nonprofit members who share the values of promoting equity and diversity in business and society. We are pleased that Out and About Nashville is helping connect you to LGBTQ+ Nashville. This guide includes just a sampling of our members’ businesses but you can easily identify our members by our membership sticker in windows and at registers all over town. You can also find a full list of members in our directory on our website. By spending your money with our members who believe in our mission, you are helping keep Nashville “OPEN and EQUAL”. It won’t take long for you to experience what makes Nashville special and one of the largest LGBTQ populations in the United States. Nashville’s friendly and progressive atmosphere has allowed our community to flourish while making the entire city a gayborhood. LGBT Nashvillians have also enjoyed protections through municipal nondiscrimination ordinances in employment, and other public areas for over a decade. In 2018 Nashville became the first city in the South to recognize certified LGBT-owned businesses in contracting and the Metro government appropriates funds to the Nashville LGBT Chamber to help develop and support LGBT-owned businesses. A goal of the Nashville LGBT Chamber is to foster a community of professional development. The Chamber provides an easy way for members to learn from each other. Because of COVID-19, the Chamber had to innovate to meet member needs, which resulted in the utilization of Zoom-based educational webinars entitled the Rainbow Connection Series. This series includes webinars, networking events, and other educational meetings to help our members and community stay connected and informed while we navigated the “new normal.” Programs include: Member Connect gives an in-depth highlight of one of our corporate members and one of our small business members. Through the Q&A sessions with the presenting members, we are all able to talk about what we were working on and ask questions about problems or issues we need help with from those with an outside perspective. Classroom Connect is our educational programming series designed to help our members and broader LGBT and ally community educate themselves and grow professionally. The 2021 series will continue this month with a session of LGBTBE Certification and Metro Procurement. Corporate Connect (formerly known as Pride in Business) is a bi-monthly roundtable discussion for leaders of LGBT Employee Resource Groups. This program has had a positive impact on employee engagement, education, and awareness in the workplace, defeating anti-LGBT legislation in Tennessee, fundraising for LGBT youth and other LGBT organizations, increasing participation in the Nashville Pride Equality Walk, and improving lives in middle Tennessee. If you are a corporate representative, reach out to our team to get plugged in. Network Connect consists of morning (AM Brewing Up Business) and happy-hour (PM Brewing Up Business) networking opportunities. These events include a short program of announcements from our chamber’s staff and then small group networking. We break the larger groups into small rooms to exchange information and let peers know what attendees are doing and feeling at the time. Twelve Must-See Attractions Lee Hatcher Maybe you’re visiting Nashville for the first, or fifteenth, time, or maybe you have relatives visiting and you’re trying to decide where to take them… Either way, there’s so much to do in Nashville, you’ll need more than one trip to really take it all in. Here are our suggestions for some of the most notable experiences in Nashville we recommend. But don’t stop here—a little research will turn up a lot more! 1.

With monthly events and exhibits, the Frist Art Museum has a lot to offer art lovers. It showcases amazing stand-alone pieces, as well as famous collections of work. In 2021, the Frist will pay homage to Picasso by featuring 75 original works! The Frist is also a great option for families, as it has a hands-on section that encourages people of all ages to create their own art. The Tennessee State Museum is a solid choice for those who are traveling and would like to learn a little more about the state of Tennessee. With free admission and a rich collection exhibiting local history, there is a lot to gain from stopping by. It is also conveniently located on Rosa Parks Boulevard right next to the Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, just a few blocks over from German Town. Plus, you can walk across the parking lot to the Nashville Farmer’s Market and get fresh seasonal produce or sample some of Tennessee’s finest ice creams. Special Edition 2021

If you’re an animal lover and looking for a laid-back experience, the Nashville Zoo is for you! Open since 1991, the Nashville Zoo provides the Nashville area with access to an incredible array of animals. When the weather is nice, this is a great option for an outdoor experience that gives you the chance to get up close with some of the world’s coolest animals! You get to meet giraffes, snow leopards, and the inhabitants of the petting zoo, among many others—learn their stories while also getting the chance to be a part of the local Nashville community. This wouldn’t be a Nashville list if I did not include something music related. Nashville has pride in its Blue Bird Cafe, a quiet music room that is recognized as a “songwriter’s performance space”. If you love music and want to feel what the heart of Nashville is all about, the Blue Bird Cafe is a top choice. And, let’s not forget, you could hear the next top ten hit from front row seats. Another authentic Nashville experience includes the Ryman Auditorium. Whether you book a tour or grab a ticket for your favorite musician, it never disappoints. ggest buying tickets for local performers at the Ryman so you can understand what it’s like to experience Music City’s essence. And don’t forget to pick up some of their amazing hoodies! If you like getting great pictures to post on social media, not stopping at one of the “I believe in Nashville” murals would be a mistake. The four murals, created by Nashville native Andrien Saporiti, are the most ‘Nashville’ thing you will find. They are scattered throughout the downtown area, promoting exploration of local shops and restaurants while providing for a great photo op. Want your hotel stay in Nashville to be steeped in history? Book a room at The Hermitage Hotel, famous for its elegance, bathrooms, and ghost stories. It’s smack dab in the heart of downtown Nashville, right down the street from the State Capitol and next to the legislative plaza. With a 9.6 star review, The Hermitage Hotel offers historic luxury in Music City. At 112 years old, this upscale hotel has made its mark and outlasted most of its surrounding buildings. Go to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel: even if you don’t stay there, it is worth visiting. It has a magnificent indoor garden featuring over 8,000 different tropical plants and various scenic waterfalls, as well as has a quarter mile indoor river. During the holiday season they decorate to the nines with lights and accessories, making for an even more breathtaking view. The hotel itself offers a resort and spa, pool, golf course and an upscale fitness center. Movie lovers should make a stop at the Belcourt Theater, which has dedicated itself to presenting the best in cinema. It is a nonprofit cultural institution that shows documentaries, classical cinema, independent films and much more. Its smaller theater spaces offer a more at-home vibe for those who enjoy home movies while still presenting stunning works of art. The Belcourt attracts about 190,000 people annually for its reputation of fine cinema and art. It Special Edition 2021
is also walking distance from some of Nashville’s best Asian cuisine and ice-cream shops, so it makes a great date night! 10. If you want a break from the monotonous new construction architecture of Nashville, a visit to the Cathedral of the Incarnation will do the trick! It was dedicated in 1914 as the third Catholic cathedral in Nashville and showcases amazing Italian architecture modeled after the Roman Basilica. It holds regular, traditional catholic masses and on occasion hosts local college performances. It has a rich history and is such a beautiful building that you’d be glad to see it, even from a street view. I suggest stopping to go inside however, because it is much more impressive from the inside. 11. On your visit to Centennial Park, you should absolutely go inside The Parthenon. The full scale replica (restored) of the ancient Greek building is the centerpiece of Nashville’s urban park and includes a full scale, 42 foot Athena statue inside. The Parthenon also serves as an art museum with 63 permanent paintings from American artists from the 19th and 20th century, as well as exhibiting local artwork from the local community regularly. 12. Last, but certainly not least, you should visit the Cheekwood Estate and Gardens. With 55 acres of cultivated gardens, 12 different garden exhibits, a 1.5 miles walking trail that features woodland sculptures, and the Cheekwood Mansion that serves as a museum, it has the most to offer. It definitely boasts the most serene environment of any Nashville attraction and every experience is different because of the sheer vastness of the estate. You could go four or five times and still experience new wonders in the ever-changing landscapes.

Nashville has a great food scene—entire magazines are dedicated to covering it—so we haven’t even tried to be all-encompassing. Rather, we are including some staff favorites, the places we recommend when our families and friends visit Nashville. 1.

If you want all-you-can-eat, made to order sushi then Sushi 88 is the perfect place. With 100% fresh ingredients and a cozy setting in the heart of Nashville’s Hillsboro Village, Sushi 88 offers some of the absolute best rolls you’ll get at this kind of spot. Of course, if you’re visiting, eating at one of the local hot chicken places is a must! Try Prince’s or Bolton’s for a truly authentic Nashville experience, or Hattie B’s Hot Chicken for a popular tourist option. Voted as Nashville’s best Barbecue multiple years in multiple magazines, Edley’s Bar-B-Que has a reputation. With three separate locations in the Nashville area, their smoked meats and sides, which are made fresh every morning, attract a lot of locals for some amazing southern comfort. Edley’s use white oak wood to slow smoke their meats, and they only making enough for the day, so it is a “first-come first-serve” type of place. Definitely do not miss out on this one! For an iconic Tennessee experience, try White Limozeen, the grandest indoor-outdoor rooftop bar and restaurant Nashville has. An ode to the queen—Ms. Dolly Parton—it features bright pink décor, with a Barbie feel, and even has a pool. Their menu is French-inspired, featuring options from the La Grand-Pere and caviar to scrambled eggs and hot chicken salad.
