In the past, the Municipality wanted to develop along the ring road a complex average rise residential area formed by big concrete blocks, but unfortunately for that period and fortunately for today they didn’t achieved their goals, fact that enables them today to readdress the empty areas in the extend of creating an enormous green belt that is going to surround the city.

The West 8’s approach was following their intentions and in this way, we wanted to create new addresses for the existing residential areas, but also for the new development. Moreover, the first concept was to develop a unitary approach in order to fold both the landscape design of the new green belt and the urban design, as a way of creating new integrated urban neighborhoods. The underpinning principles are: folding together the cultural meaning and the neighborhood morphology with a GREEN BELT, readdressing the existing neighborhoods through creating a more sustainable and active area, creating a new green spaces system, introducing fluidity in all types of mobility.

The competition consisted in inviting different design professionals to develop the Concept Master Plan and the Concept Proposals for the Singapore’s Rail Corridor. West 8 was choosen for participating also in the second phase of it by demonstrating a clear and strong approach in responding to the ecology of the site, that respect its natural qualities, while introducing sensitive design interventions to enhance them and by reflecting the collective aspirations of its citizens.

In our VISION, the Rail Corridor will not be just a route from North to South, contrary will be a way of stitching the areas that is intersecting along the way, by creating five new iconic places, that will act as catalysts, destinations and focal points. 1. KRANJI GATEWAY: Future Food Village is the start of a long term future redevelopment as a sustainable food village, with the Heron Gate at the station plaza overlooking the rejuvenated mangroves. 2. This project illustrates the idea of how can you design in a Dutch environment, because of the physical context – small traditional Dutch city, but also of the social aspect by being a residential development which is addressed to different social categories.

A light rail system is proposed to be implemented in the city network, and this mode of transport challenges the way in which we understand and perceive mobilities. Therefore, the project is coming to complete the basic scheme of having a new type of mobility, by the creation of a new urban scenery given by a Green Railscape - a green corridor which physically is meant to regenerate and strengthen the urban habitats and socially is introduced to sustainable energize the city life. The project consists in a design manual, including the theoretical framework of sustainable mobilities and ecological approaches, as well as design guidelines for the proposed light rail stretch, connecting Aalborg from east to west. The strategic principles from the manual are exemplified through a site specific pilot project for the light rail interchange at Vestby Station.

This project intends to built up on these same tendencies, but emphasizing a bit more on the contrast between the industrial and the natural landscape, while also bringing new cultural and social activities to our site. This project proposes a different approach to urban landscaping, one that is not solely based on the traditional master planning process, but more focused towards the idea of landscaping and urbanism as a flowing process, that occurs over a certain period of time and does not just emerge out of nothingness. As such, the entire design is based on the idea that time is the main parameter that we must incorporate.

PROCESSUAL DESIGN - concept, plan and details This project will explore the processes of urbanization in the context of an urban ecosystem, addressing the need for a development over time. The main focus is integrating and optimizing the water element in this complex ecosystem, while working together with the built environment in order to create a stable duality. Due to the dynamics of the natural elements, the processual design of the landscape allows using the site before, under and after development, through different temporary uses.

SUNNY DAY | The square is activated by the hustle and bustle of the urban life, each of the participants having their own stage and scope, but still being and acting together in the Church Square. Being enhanced by the design, the square is lowered and is offering spaces to stay and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere generated by the influx of water and plants.

RAINY DAY | Frontside and backside of the Church Square

RAINY DAY | Creating the square as a flexible space, where the natural processes are hosts rather than guests, the Church Square is designed to collect and clean the rain weather, fact that is enabling it to be changeable and in the same time to be entertaining for the inhabitants .

Stăncuţa is a county and in the same time Municipality, which is situated in the southeastern part of Brăila, in a rich region, in term of different types of resources such as grain, fauna, flora and traditional customs. Stăncuţa County is a picturesque region, well known for different traditional customs, being as a result of its location next by the zone called “Băltăreţii” and the Danube. The ethnography is based on recovery, this being one of the villages in which they kept the old pursuits such as fishing rods manufacturing, cereals cultivation, popular fabrics manufacturing, pottery, floral wooden belt manufacturing. Stăncuţa Village is strategic situated in the center of Stăncuţa County in order to be easy accessible from all the other villages: Cuza-Voda, Polizesti, Stanca. This position is raising the following strategy of a radial development, starting from Stăncuţa, as the core village, towards south and west. Due to the link with the western part of this region, the Cuza-Voda Village represents the ‘Municipality’s Gate’or is the‘City Gate’for the rest of the region.

1 WEAKNESSES

GENERAL STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE | Developing the rural aspect of the Stăcuţa Village by enhancing the local identity supported by the ethnographic background through preservation and rehabilitation.

These interventions are needed in the village, in order to enhance the center of the village by creating a central public garden ( Stăncuţa’s“ hearth ”.) - that is done by extending the sidewalks and by converting the County Hall and Church parcels into public spaces. EFECTS - By enhancing the value of the its ethnographical elements, the attractiveness and the socio-economical growth of Stăncuţa Village will be increased.

2 STRENGHTS

STĂNCUŢA’S CENTRAL SQUARE arts and crafts centre Going down in scale, this third part of the project was meant to develop the core area of the Stăncuţa Village, consisting in the Church area as well as the School parcel. By conversion and extension these areas are transformed into public squares. In terms of the built environment, an old unused building is converted and rehabilitated in order to be transformed into a building for the habitants, an Arts and Crafts Center, providing different traditional activities for young generation. This centre is created by converting an unused existing building in a new multifunctional centre: an after school for children as well as a shop with traditional products, made by them.
