Our Mission Oakwood School is Morgan Hill’s welcoming home for an extended family of learners with an unwavering commitment to a more intentional education. Our school lives this commitment by: ensuring that all students learn every subject from passionate experts so that they receive far more than textbook coverage and are inspired to delve deeper by the enthusiasm and leadership of educators teaching what they love and only what they love; creating a disciplined and jubilant culture of confident self-expression most visibly in the performing arts, but infused into every aspect of learning at Oakwood so students develop into their best, most authentic selves; upholding high academic expectations to inspire the kind of intellectual stamina that leads students to think critically and creatively and engage actively with their studies; sustaining strong moral examples because the core values of this school family— including respect, service, honesty, kindness, and citizenship— never go out of style; leading children through a proven, flexible curriculum that inspires unbridled exploration by encouraging students to try their talents and explore their limits within a culture of kindness fostered by expert, caring teachers and staff members. Through this more intentional education, Oakwood students grow as expressive, thoughtful, high-achieving, self-aware, considerate young people prepared for their top-choice colleges and meaningful lives as contributing, conscientious community members.

Welcome from Head of School This Book of Gratitude serves as the perfect opportunity to thank our many donors— both through financial contributions and volunteerism—who have made navigating the past three years feasible. You have entrusted the well-being of your children to us, and we have watched as they have thrived with determination and resiliency and experienced a true sense of belonging here. Oakwood School’s continued success is made possible each year by the philanthropic support of our community. Your support, especially since 2020, has meant that our students had and continue to have a safe space to learn, our faculty and staff knew they had the backing of parents and guardians as well as administration, and that our community was in sync, even with differing perspectives, during a time when we needed to band together. On behalf of all of us at Oakwood, thank you for your continued generosity to our fundraising efforts and events, all of which provide our student community with wonderful opportunities to grow and learn each day. With gratitude,

Michelle R. Helvey Head of School

Welcome from Director of Development What an interesting three years it has been! While we normally publish our Book of Gratitude annually, other factors, mainly the pandemic and my split duty taking on the role of Pandemic Coordinator since July 2020 to help ensure the health and safety of our community was our number one priority, did not allow us to make this happen since the 2018-2019 report. In this book, you will see just how much of an impact YOU—our parents, faculty, staff, students, board, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, friends, and businesses—truly made on our community as we faced something none of us ever expected. You came together in a time of need, weathered a several-year “storm” with us, supported us when we needed funding specifically related to additional and enhanced technology, health and safety supplies, and more in order to educate your children in the way that your family felt most comfortable. This was no small feat and for that, we are forever grateful. While we have many exciting things ahead of us, we did not want to let this opportunity pass without taking the time to paint a picture of the outpouring of support through your time, talent, and treasure for 2019-2022. Thank you for your continued loyalty and support. Gratefully,

Melissa Barrow Director of Development & Alumni Relations

Celebrating the Classes of 2020 and 2021 While our esteemed graduating classes of 2020 and 2021 were not able to celebrate with all the normal pomp and circumstance, we were able to send them off on their next adventures with smaller graduation ceremonies. We are so proud of the resiliency these classes showed during a global pandemic and cannot wait to see all that they accomplish!

We are grateful to the members of the Oakwood School community who contributed during the 2019-2020, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022 school years. Every gift had a direct impact on the lives of our students, faculty, and staff and enhanced our academic, arts, science and technology, and athletic programs. During the 2020-2021 school year, the vast majority of our community’s contributions went toward the Pandemic Support Fund and we are so grateful to the all-in effort to make what was the most unique school year possible! This report lists gifts received between July 1, 2019 – June 30, 2022. Every effort has been made to ensure that all of our donors are listed accurately. Should you find any errors or omissions, please accept our sincere apologies and notify the Development Office at giving@oakwoodway.org.

Family Profile: The Love Family, P ’23 Last year when we transferred Maxwell to Oakwood School at the beginning of his junior year, we were looking for a place that promotes happiness, positivity, compassion and confidence, in addition to academic excellence. Oakwood has provided us with everything we hoped for and so much more. We have constantly felt welcomed by the staff and students ever since we first joined the community. In this place, everyone is encouraged and supported to be themselves and pursue their dreams. Oakwood is a unique community that combines individuality and collaboration in harmony. We could not ask for a better place for our child to thrive. Only weeks after Maxwell joined Oakwood, he was able to be part of the jazz ensemble performing at the school’s semi-annual concert. Maxwell has always been passionate about music, but this was the first time we saw so much joy and pride in him doing what he loves to do, accompanied by talented fellow students. Mr. Sotelo brought out the best in all the students on that night. It was truly a magical moment. Oakwood is such a supportive environment that it elevates everyone to better themselves every single day. Since we joined the community, within a brief period, Maxwell has flourished into a confident, compassionate and driven young man. Most importantly he made so many new friends at school very quickly. As a latecomer to Oakwood, Maxwell had some catch up work to fulfill at the beginning of the last school year. All of the teachers were extremely helpful and offered their time during lunch breaks and after school to meet with him. In particular, Dr. Wilmot was a consistent source of inspiration who instilled confidence in Maxwell in science. Maxwell went on to complete a summer internship at the UCLA Chemical Engineering Lab at the end of his junior year. Our family believes resources are key to sustaining the unique culture and quality of education Oakwood School has created. We are committed to giving back in ways that show our appreciation of what the school has to offer us. By doing so, we have even greater assurance of continued enjoyment and we can be proud of the brand our school continues to build with the excellent staff and programs offered. We chose Oakwood School for our son because we immediately clicked with the school’s culture and values when we toured the campus, everyone was joyful, caring and confident. This is a place where everyone has a voice and everyone’s dream can become a reality. We adore the small family community feel at Oakwood and we believe the legacy is here to stay and last. Family Profile: Shachar and Emily Shem-Tov, P ’26, ’29 Our family has been at Oakwood for eight years now – Clara started in first grade and Miriam in Jr. Kindergarten and they are so excited to now be embarking on their high school and middle school adventures. From the very start, the girls fell in love with the theater program at Oakwood. Clara’s first role as a little “star” in the first grade production (though she regretted at the time not trying out to be one of the planets instead) has led to many years of both girls being involved in theater at Oakwood (both during the school year and summer programs) as well as to getting very involved in local community theater productions. By not only being in shows at Oakwood but getting the opportunity to watch all of the other school productions, they now love every aspect of theater from being on stage, working behind the scenes, and being in the audience cheering on others. They have gained so much confidence and so many skills from all the opportunities and encouragement that the Oakwood theater program has provided to them. They’re excited to see what new opportunities being in middle school and high school open up for them and just absolutely adore the new theater facilities! So many teachers and staff members have made huge impressions on our kids during our years here, encouraging them to try out new things, step into leadership positions, and grow in countless ways. We’re delighted to be a part of the community and to do what we can to give back so that it can continue to provide amazing opportunities to all of the students to discover things that will excite and challenge them – whether that’s in theater, arts, academics, technology, sports, or all the other things the school offers.

Family Profile: John and Shaneen Monaco, P ’19, ’24, ’30 The Monaco family has been at Oakwood 11 years so far. Our eldest daughter Callie graduated in 2019, Sydney is currently a junior, and JC is in fifth grade. When looking for a new school for our children we came across Oakwood. Some of our deciding factors for choosing Oakwood included the sense of community that we felt the first moment we stepped on campus as well as being able to have all three of our kids at the same school. We loved the small class sizes and the fact that it went from preschool all the way through high school. Oakwood has many events throughout the year that families can participate in. Two of our favorite events are the spirit assembly and Thanks and Giving. At the Spirit Assembly I love seeing the kids get up on stage for the first that year and perform a song that represents their grade. Our second favorite schoolwide event is the Thanks and Giving event. I love how entire Oakwood community comes together to provide meals for those who are less fortunate within our community. It is a great teaching tool for all of our students to learn how fortunate they are while still being able to give back to our community. As a family we take this opportunity to show our kids how a meal box helps a family less fortunate than ours. By being part of the Oakwood community, it has allowed our children to grow as individuals and discover who they are and what they are passionate about.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day! We are so thrilled to be bringing back the Oakwood Lower School Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day Celebration this spring! The event date will be announced soon, but in the meantime, please visit our Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day webpage to learn more, share your guest’s information with us so that they are sure to receive an invite, or sign-up to volunteer at the event. We can’t wait to welcome our Oakwood Grandparents and Special Friends to campus this spring! oakwoodway.org/gpsf-day

Family Profile: Ken and Cathy McKeever, GP ’34 It means the world to us that our grandson, Easton, has the opportunity to attend such a wonderful school. We have watched him thrive in his first three years at Oakwood School in Preschool, JrK, and Kindergarten, under the direction of the warmest, most caring and talented teachers he was blessed to have. He has truly blossomed under their guidance and has also made so many great friends in the process. Having previously taught for seventeen years in Kindergarten and First Grade in a private school, I (Cathy) find the academics at Oakwood School far surpass that of the curriculum I was familiar with. Easton seems to be working at one to two grade levels above what I was formerly teaching. We are amazed at his math skills and his vocabulary is quite advanced for his age. A love for his environment and interest in all subjects helps tremendously with his progress, and we feel so fortunate that he has this chance to be a part of Oakwood School. When we pick him up each day after school, Easton can’t wait to tell us of all his adventures in each class; whether it be art projects, technology techniques, studies in different areas of science, listening to a new story in the library, running around with Coach Gus in P. E., or naming all the planets and continents or counting by fours, we are just so thrilled to watch his little spirit soar! For us, being able to work in the library each week since he started here, has been a privilege that makes us feel like we are part of the Oakwood community. Taking part in all the Oakwood events and activities during the year keeps us young at heart, whether it is by attending spirit rallies, Halloween parades and festivities, watching basketball games, or seeing kids participate in the annual Fund Run. We are so looking forward to another new school year and especially this spring’s Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day to celebrate with Easton. Oakwood School makes us feel like we are part of their big family and we love that. It is our pleasure to donate our time and money to help Oakwood School in any way we can.

What a Difference Three Years Makes! In our last Book of Gratitude mailed in the Fall of 2019, we shared the timeline of our campus expansion project. We joyfully celebrated the grand opening of the Gwendolyn Riches Liberal Arts Center on August 19, 2019, followed by the Oakwood Theatre’s grand opening performance in October. We closed out with the grand opening of the Athletic Center on November 18 that year. While these facilities were a welcomed addition to our growing campus community, in just a few short months, they would be more necessary than we would have ever anticipated. With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing us to pivot to remote learning to close out the 2019-2020 school year starting in March 2020, we were able to return to on-campus learning for those who chose that option in Fall 2020, all thanks to the ability to utilize these new spaces and properly physical distance as our guidance required at the time. We want to thank the many individuals who supported the campaign efforts that allowed us to complete such a large-scale expansion and are so blessed to have these wonderful spaces for our students to grow and learn in, especially during the past few school years! If you haven’t yet attended a performance in the theatre or cheered on our Hawks at a game in the Athletic Center, be sure to do so soon! The Oakwood community is a special one and we are forever grateful that you partnered with us during both wide-scale fundraising efforts and during a global pandemic that required us to pivot constantly to ensure our students continued to thrive! Thank you!

2022-2023 Looking Forward The Annual Fund is the heart of every independent school’s philanthropic efforts in which each family is asked to provide an annual donation to the school and Oakwood is no different. Our goal is to achieve 100% participation from our current families, faculty, staff, and board. Donations made through the Annual Fund may be designated by the donor to go to any one of the below funds. Most donations are given “unrestricted” for the school’s greatest needs, meaning the donation will go toward one or more of the five funds, depending on need. Proceeds from school fundraising events go to one or more of the five funds. Greatest Need

Campus Fund

Most donations are given “unrestricted” for the school’s greatest needs, meaning the donation will go toward one or more of the five funds, depending on needs that arise each school year.

Supports upgrades to our campus safety with the addition of new security cameras, evaluations of our parking lot and campus access points, and more.

Scholarship Fund

Used to enhance the school’s enrichment programs. Past projects have included a ball wall, climbing wall, cargo net, musical instruments, sound system, and special lighting equipment.

Helps us build our fund to enhance the socio-economic diversity of our community and give deserving students access to an Oakwood education.

Science & Technology Fund

Strengthens and expands the school’s technology and science resources. Funds raised enhance the teaching environment and increase student learning.

Enrichment Fund

Faculty Fund

Supports faculty development and enhances compensation. Increasing professional development has been one of the teachers’ major requests and these funds help make that happen.

Bricks and Tiles As in the past, Oakwood is offering the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on our campus, with the option of purchasing donor bricks and tiles. With your gift of $500, $1,000, $2,500, or $5,000 and above to any of our fundraising campaigns, you may celebrate, honor, or commemorate—the message and the words are up to you! Please consider making an investment in students’ lives which will have an immediate impact on our current community as well as on generations to come. With your contribution, you have the opportunity to:

• Commemorate your family’s years at Oakwood • Give as a graduation gift to a senior • Recognize a teacher or alumnus/alumna • Memorialize a beloved family member or friend Brick and tile sizes are determined by your total gifts to Oakwood.
